hes very blunt and cocky, unapproachable, makes you feel stupid if you ask a &#
Very, very cocky.. Unclear, teaching unuseful stuff. Loves the dean

Talks about everything but the course and has enormous ego
cant't stop bragging about being associate dean
if he was so business smart i do not think he'd still be driving an ugly car!
mmmm, not very clear, but likes bragging about his good position
It was SO refreshing to be taught by the associate dean. . . .
very conceited
well you see i have two hats...
seems like he knows only about sunlife and how he became associate dean
How can anymore be more coinceited!! Not worth his brag
No Comments
Well, to begin with, he is unclear, makes no sense, brags about his associate dean position (at least if he were the dean) and has very very hard exams in a course that is absolutely worthless... I would sak to avoid him, but unfortunately, you can't...
not clear in class, & exams are cryptic. not a good combination.

I share exactly the same feelings about Donovan as all the other members. His notes are disoganized, the guy is so so full of himself it's unbelievable.
i found him helpful and fair. class is pretty good.
One thing is sure : he likes himself!!! By the way, he has saved SunLife as well as many other companies!
Ok, he's not nice. He's a little conceited. But he tells the truth: if you want something, you have to earn it. Haters say he's a bad prof, but he's just telling you exactly what you'll find out in the real world.
When I used to work at SunLife hahaha
No Comments
I found him helpful in guiding my concentration.
Not sure why everyone complains, sure he's a little cocky, but he's one of the smarter people i've had teach me in a while. Ppl said Info sys was killer, but if you work you'll do fine. Very interesting and informative.
if you go passed his braguing ans narcissism he knows how to get your intention and can be funny, making class not so boring. He has people skills and charisma. I guess he should find different examples than his work experienc to illustrate IS theories
He knows about his stuff, but wants to do something hard with something easy. Very full of himself, not very open minded. Seems to enjoy having student's complaints. Exams are weirdly presented (mult. choice are hard)
I think he is a good prof, I dont know why people are complaining. He is a very charismatic speaker and gives interesting examples in class. Class is interesting.
You'll like him till you review your slides are realize how bad they are and that they only covered 10%. Other bad thing, he makes exams easy, and then curves down everyone's grade
If you do the work, you'll get a decent to good mark. Donovan loves himself and isn't afraid to tell everyone.
full of himself. what a jerk. but you have no choice but him so get use to it...
His lectures are the only ones you'll find interesting. but nonetheless USELESS!!!! Don't take notes --> you won't need em. he looks like ralph from the simpsons.
I like him!
He is an ok prof, but this guy is way to FULL OF HIMSELF that it's just disgusting. He should cut the crap, associate dean don't mean nothing!!!
This course covers the issues relating to the rise and fall of Sunlife Financial during the work term of Richard Donovan. Though the company currently has over 14,000 employees, much focus is placed upon how Donovan turned the company around while managin
I have no complaints and I liked the way he teaches. Plus, you can get hit an A if you bust your ass.
Really interesting lectures especially compared to the other teachers in this course. Has tons of intersting real life examples.
He loves power and does more talking about his own work at Sunlife than about the course. I really don't like him
He's conceited and thinks that because he "wears two hats in this faculty" he's special. The teaching is more toward the story of his life and family, and not really about IS - however, you may want to attend class as he likes to quote himself
Case class with donovan is a must-take for all management students. he will not only show you how to solve a case, but will make sure that you can present in front of total strangers with no preparation at the end of the class. its worth it just for thi
i know many people don't like donovan as a prof, but he is the most interesting IS prof at Mcgill. He uses examples and makes the concepts clear.
Case cracking is really practical.
He is really captivating. He keeps going on and on about how he turns companies around with his wonderful wit, but he really is a smart interesting prof. Take him, you won't be bored.
EXTREMELY full of himself, but still the most interesting of the IS profs. i think its just funny how he views himself as the most successful businessman out there. so then donovan i have a question: ever heard that saying, "those who can't do, teach
Dickie Donovan...well, I guess revenge is sweet. Fail this!
I will not lie to you. This man is arrogant and full of himself. He is also possibly one the most interesting and amusing profs I've ever had the honor meeting. Witty and full of stories, though he seems to overly promote himself and his achievements.
fool of himself
You guys are all full of****. You´re just pissed off because you got a bad grade. I don´t think I know a teacher that cared more about the well being of all students, than Professor Donovan.
He teaches like he cares about his students. Everything is layed out. No surprises. Totally fair. Also very interesting to listen to.
Best prof for the class. Donovan gets knocked for the IS class, but by far the most understanding prof at mcgill. no other prof gives you an automatic B+ for just showing up. Promotes learning and and out of the class room. McGill will be hurt if he leaves.
A lot of people dislike him, but he is the best prof of the course, and has many interesting stories! His exams aren't easy, and the text isn't helpful, so pay attention in class.
He's not just the worst prof I had at McGill, he's the worst prof I have ever had. I was actually thinking of doing a concentration in IS before having taken his class, now I am definetly not.
bad teacher... only talks about himself
this man is a waste of time... says a lot of ****s, wrong and unuseful pieces of info playing the role of the great prof. He is naive, stupid and ignorant. AVOID HIM IF YOU CAN!!!!
At first I thought this mans ego was getting in the way of his teaching, then I realized his teaching was just feeding his ego.
how can i put this ... if you want a classic baddd prof, i mean theeee WORSE PROF.... or if you were to look up the world's more horrible prof in the guiness world records.... it would have RICHARD DONOVAN BESIDE IT
I completly disagree with you guys. Donovan (and I am not the only one to say it: Last year 2004, 90% of the class applaused each time he came to teach).YES HE HAS EGO, but it gives life to his stories. He is really motivated for class.DIPLOMA (he has bcom) HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE WAY OF TEACHING
IS people, he gets a bad rep from IS cause its a stupid class. But in fact he is the MOST AMAZING PROF EVER, he cares very much for students. Take him for this case analysis class, i guarantee it will be your best academic experience at McGill. And by the way, he gives you a B+ if you just show up.
I love the fact that this professor preaches how IS streamlines manual tasks in business, but he cannot even submit the grades into Minerva before the McGill deadline. Even the technology averse OB professors submit their grades on time.
IS is not interesting at the best of times... it was a pretty fair class
He does come off as arrogant at times. But he is one of the few McGill management professors with revelant work experience in his field. McGill management is full of academics disconnected from reality. Richard's style is a pleasant change from these characters and his lectures are refreshing and very interesting.
well hes a good teacher in the sense that he purposefully puts you in an uncomfortable situation to see if you'll be able to to do the same in the realy buisness world. overall, he was interesting
great lecturer
Not a bad guy but can get irritating after a while. Too much Blah... Blah... Blah... about himself. Overall he is a good teacher. I am happy he's back to teaching classes and no longer associate dean anymore (it got to his head so he was a jerk sometimes). Course is ok. P.S. He's loud. Don't sit too close to the front of the class you may go deaf!
Nice guy
Unlike IS class, case class is actually useful - you learn how to analyze and present cases. Donovan teaches this class really well and he's much more fun than in IS. He gives good feedback and is quite entertaining. This is one of those must-do classes b/c it gives you kick-ass experience which will help you in the work field!
It's quite ironic that Donovan teaches an I.S. class yet he has the most I.T. problems out of ANY prof I have ever had. Quite full of himself, too.
all i can say is that i hope to hell that he isn't the only prof who teaches IS for your year. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Has no control over his TAs (in fact, just forget about getting any help whatsoever from the TAs) and has the most IT problems out of any class I've taken at McGill (wonderfully ironic eh?)
He is very cocky and I feel he has no respect for his students. He's a hypocrit in a number of ways, and eventually you get sick of his BS. He's a good speaker, but the material is so watered-down that you don't take much away from the course anyway.
Do you want an exam outside the book and notes? Do you want 3 10 hours project thats worth 45% and probably get 30 of them by spending 30 hours. Do you want to have an annoying lecturer that dictates when you can piss, leave the class, ask a friend for help during class? If you answered no, then you are normal.. AVOID AT ALL COSTS, WARNING WARNING!
Very interesting and engaging class. Teaches important business concepts; not only IS Concepts. Has a lot of knowledge and experience to share. Provides real-world examples to illustrate all concepts. Projects helped understand the topics, and although they were hard, I learned a lot from them. Great Prof.
He graduated from McGill with a 2.73 GPA... not exactly the "academic type". The class is easy, but hard to do well in. His lectures can be interesting but are completely useless, and he's vey condescending.
Very knowledgeable and modest teacher who wants more than anything to give his students a taste of the real world so they can succeed in business or whatever careers they aim for. Cares about what his students would benefit from-proof is his ambassador program. Very impactful prof on your educational experience.
This guy knows what hes talking about, and gets the message across, but hes got quite the ego. Thinks he runs the place. Got some kind of attitude. Marks took forever to post, ironic considering the class is about computers. Very unfair grading on midterm and assignments. Never responds to students. Wouldn't recommend him.
This guy is an total idiot and he cant do any thing correctly. He talks to us like we are 11 yrs old and he uses the vocab of a 6 year old...honestly i dont mind his classes so much..but he is just so damn annoying sometimes.. try to avoid if u can for IS, i doubt u can
I took an inroductory programming course with Mr. Donovan. I failed it. He will tell you straight up that programming is not for everyone (you know who you are). He raises the bar for programming standards, which is what the industry needs.
Terrible. The class isn't hard, by any means, but you'll have to get used to never getting your grades back or having any of your assignments explained to you. He makes all kinds of excuses for everything that goes wrong, but when it comes down to it all he really cares about are his "case competitions" and his stupid trips to Japan.
He's very easy going. Class is interesting to listen. As for material and exams, you should cover it on your own. He makes it sound simple, but it can be tricky. It takes a while before getting the grades back. Assignments are tricky and challenging. Make sure to go see the TAs
Simply appalling. He's HORRIBLE. I wonder if he's seen this site, if not, those of u in his class should make him! He needs to know just how bad he sux. He is an idiot, no other way to put it. don't know how he was ever allowed to teach. vain, silly, SLOW, unprofessional, a total bimbo. good he was stripped off his associate dean title. LOSER!
Absolutely incredible. Probably the best prof I've had at McGill. His case class is a must take for everyone. Fun, entertaining and he gives the greatest feedback and encouragement to students!
He is sooo full of himself you want to vomit. Over the course of the semester he will try to convince you that IS is vital to any major you do and that you shud do a concentration in it and that you should take his case class, which i have heard bad things about. Final exams were corrected in 3 hours, what the hell is that? Shows how much he cares.
He is very, very STRICT. He has his own set of rules that are kind of outside the faculty rules, and you HAVE to follow them. Outside of class, he's very helpful, but his course has so much materials and gradings are done a little bit randomly.
this idiot thinks he is all that, he is extremely rude, doesnt even correct midtrms, finals or even any of his stupid assignments,,some unexperienced TA'S willl do his dirty work.. DO NOTT TAKE HIMMMM...plus ull b bored out of ur life as he goes on and on talking thinking ppl are interested....and FYI NO! i did not fail his class i got a B+
Interesting class. I don't know if a lot of effort is put in the gradings but it sounds like it's fair.
Yes, his class is tough, but just in case you didn't realize, we're in UNIVERSITY - don't expect anyone to hold your hand & guide you through. His assignments were a bit disorganized and his exams (esp. the multiple choice questions) were hard, but you learn a lot (or at least I did). Just suck it up & do the work - welcome to the real world!!
You don't have a choice to take him because he is the only one that teaches IS and it is a core. He talks about himself allt the time. Always out of the subject. Assignments are unclear.. You'll hate this class.
I don't really like the subject matter but getting past that, he's got some very good tales to tell in class. Maybe I should find out my marks before I write more but up to now everything has been fair.
All those who said he is bad said it because they expected a class where you can study everything by heart and get A. Open your eyes, life is not like this! This class, will demand critical thinking, and is good for those who are sharp. If you are a textbook-memorizing nerd,go away from this class, all you can do is get good grades without thinking
Very knowledgeable of the subject matter and is interesting to listen to most of the time. However, for some reason he always has this stuck up attitude that is not very appealing. I didnt understand why he needed to brag about himself all the time. Overall good teacher
Really full of himself. If I heard any more about his case class or his case class trips I think I would have screamed. He thinks he knows everything about business and especially about strategy, but should perhaps actually learn some strategy beyond Porter and Mintzberg, Try and take the course with Animesh, a prof who will learn your name.
He is very arrogant but at the same time is an absolutely amazing professor. He makes the course interesting and relates it to his own business examples. His slides have everything you'd need to know for the exam and if you attend the lectures you will be able to ace the exam with much ease. Definitely one of the top level professors at McGill.
bad, keep away.He does not explain clearly , slides not related to exams.Does not prepare you well for mid-term or final. Plus , it takes hmi about 4-6 weeks to grade exams. He talks too much about himself and his trips wich is useless. Take Animesh, a mush more competent teacher ....
this guy is all talk & no show. It's a good thing this is a 1st year class b/c these are the only people that'll listen to his stories. Says he loves teaching but he doesn't teach anything. Probably got fired from a job in industry & the only place that'll pay him is McGill, even then, he got fired from being associate dean
No Comments
What is wrong with you guys?! Maybe case class is different, but you will not find a prof. as engaging or clear as Donovan. Always willing to talk - yes, he's a bit narcissistic, but his stories are always entertaining. Keeps us all paying attention somehow, and the cases themselves are great. Great course, great prof. (For Case class, at least)
Very engaging professor, makes the material more interesting, but often what he goes over in class isn't on the exams, so you have to do alot of extra work on your own to make sure you know the material that will be on the exam. Seemed like he doesn't care too much about all his students, doesn't make an effort to get to know you.
Prof. Donovan loves case, and he is great at what he does. This class actually offers an EXPERIENCE at university for those who want& are willing to work for one. This is the best class I've taken at McGill and it has taught me skills I know I will act. use in the real world. Keep up the good work Dono, and forget these losers who didn't like IS.
He is an awesome professor! He genuinely cares about his students and is always available to talk to his students. His stories are interesting and if you work hard you will do well. Case class is the most amazing experience I've had at Mcgill and I recommend it for everyone!
You will either love or hate Donovan. Loves talking about Case Class. He does genuinely care abotu students, but certainly picks his favourites. I warn you about case class... if you are not a MGMT keener, and are not a huge fan of group work, I would stay away
Easy class but did not learn very much, other than presentation skills. I felt very little material was actually taught--lots of unhelpful class discussion. Prof D is good at case presentations and you do improve some presentation skills but learn very little about the course topic, IT in Business.
Best class i ever had!
Take Dono's case class.
This class pushes students, to think deeper, highly analytical & confident presentator. The material learned are very applicable to other courses. You work in cross-functional teams-great learning opportunity. He also really does care about his students, is approachable, enhances the whole learning process. I HIGHLY recommend
He is OK.
DO NOT TAKE DONOVAN. I know more about this guy's life then i do my own. Talks, talks, and talks, and repeats, and repeats all his stories that no one cares about. So arrogant, and thinks he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. You'll be hearing that line a lot in class. Doesn't correct on time and it was simply DREADFUL to sit there for 1.5hrs
I loved Dono in case. A really helful prof when you get to know him.
Best Professor I ever had! He really cares about his students! He is willing to help on an individual level whether it has to do with the course or not.
His classes are as useless as Montreal is cold in the winter.
Definitely has a good heart and is passionate about what he teaches. The only catch is that he teaches Information Systems....
Great prof!!
donovan is over confident, pretentious and unclear, don t take his class
Is passionate about his field which makes his lectures interesting. Recommended
The only thing I didn't like about him was that he is over confident. He wants to be the limelight. He is not much helpful and doesn't give you an inch of % in favour of grade.
very unorganized slides, materials jump back and forth defines a term twice, but gives different definition each time
He would be the greatest teacher ever if he did not waste 50% of the class talking about himself. Last time I checked, the name of each member of his family does not come up in the test.
Donovan is a fantastic lecturer and uses very interesting case studies to assist with each lesson. While arrogant at times, I rather an interesting professor with personality than a boring prof any day. If you read the textbook and attend lectures an A is not difficult to achieve.
I'm sure he'd be a good consultant if you had a business. But terrible professor. TERRIBLE. This is my subject of interest, and I hate this class. says something about him.
What an arrogant guy. He has no credentials (bragged about graduating with a 2.7, and has no graduate degrees), yet thinks that he is the golden god of the faculty. Says that the exams aren't supposed to be about memorization, but they are. Takes forever to get paper grades back, if you even get them back at all. TAKE IT WITH ANYONE BUT HIM
Too be honest, your choice of teacher won't affect your IS grade. The material is dry, the way the course is tested feels unnatural, but this is the case with most MGCR cores so just suck it up. Attended maybe 1 out of every 10 lectures, pretty easy to finish with an A- with OK effort. Teacher is funny, lots of stories, likes to talk about cases
If you can, stay away from him. Took forever to get your mark back and get your email replied. Classes are useless.
His lectures are confusing, he goes on and on about stories but he never clearly communicates what is actually required to know. He is vague, even when explaining the requirements of the group project, he did not tell us what was specifically required for each part of the paper.
Donovan is an amazing teacher. He makes the lectures very interesting by talking about subjects beyond the course material. You should attend class, he tells things that aren't on the slides and could be on the exams.
Totally useless. Spends at least 20min every class talking about his personal life and showing vacation photos. Doesn't let you choose project groups. Annoyingly starts every class with "good afternoon class" and makes everyone say "good afternoon professor donovan" back. His lectures & slides are useless. Easy A if you take a crash course though.
Very bad, don't take him!
So arrogant. Constantly talks about how great he is and how well his case competition teams do thanks to his guidance. In reality he's unhelpful and annoying. Also, he makes his TAs teach the Excel part of the course because he doesn't really know how, despite frequently telling us what an important skill it is. Avoid at all costs.
Prof. Richard Donovan, is literally the worst professor I have ever seen. Don't get me wrong, the course itself is good, but don't expect him to be there and help you. He skipped 4 lectures, leaving students vulnerable in learning the materials. Midterms questions are ridiculously ambiguous and hard. Avoid him at all cost.
Quick Disclosure, I review all my profs regardless of performance. Donovan, he's great but he's diffenetly one of those love him or hate him type of people. I liked him, he has a lot of insight and his senority is helpful. Others say he's aragant, which can be true sometimes, but it's small. Get to know him during Office Hours and you'll be fine.
Keeps talking about his trips to AbuDhabi and Japan which really does not add much to the class and is quite condescending. Skipped classes to go abroad and then gave Excel assignment with stuff he had not taught. Just learn all his slides by heart to do well. Has a lot of knowledge regarding administration and gives good life advice in general
Desperately trying to make midterm exam hard in an improper way.
Cancels classes often on short notice and messes up the course schedule, keeping classes late on Fridays. Keeps going off tangent in class and is more interested in his stories of case competitions. Attending classes adds no value so you are better off studying at home. But if you catch him in office hours, he is a nice guy for a conversation.
Terrible professor. Huge ego and spends way too much time talking about his case competition teams and vacations. You can skip every lecture, except for the one on Excel if you don't know how to use Excel. He makes the TAs teach the Excel stuff b/c he has no idea what he's doing, so you should be fine. Easy content, easy grading, but WICKED curve
Definitely the most arrogant professor I've had. Spends the first half hour of class speaking about his trips for his case class and how great he is. Now that I think about it, I learned more about his trips abroad than course material from attending class. Midterm exam is ridiculously ambiguous but make sure to perfectly memorize the powerpoints.
Had him for Information Systems at McGill. Definitely one of the most interesting teachers I've had. His exams are fair and you could get plenty of help for his assignments because he assigns them well in advance. He uses great examples to illustrate his point and is super approachable. Really a great guy and a great teacher too!
His lectures objectively lack relevance for the exams, since he spends most of the time showing off and talking about himself. And he is not really helpful outside of class either, as he will often simply tell you to look at the slides when you ask him questions.
The reviews on here scared me, but the content of the class is quite easily understandable. Donovan likes to talk about case-- but he's organized, knows the content that he's teaching and his exams are relevant to the lectures. Reading the textbook will help you understand the material but isn't necessary. Group projects are subjectively graded.
He talks about himself half of the time. If you take that class expect him to talk about his win at copenhagen.
BIG ego
best prof ever to have, definitely knows his stuffs well, exams aren't hard as long as you understand his lectures, everything straight out of class lessons so you should definitely attend!
Uses cringey catch phrases in place of punctuation during lectures. Probably best not to waste time watching lecture recordings, just read slides briefly at home and take notes/make cards for textbook material. Group projects unrelated to course material.
With Professor Donovan, it all depends on the student and a bit of luck. Luck in the sense that, success with his multiple choice questions are a question of flair. Simply learn everything by heart and try to make links.
BIG EGO, loves to talk about his achievements. Expect nothing when you try to ask for help outside class. "I dont have time", "Every excel works differently, thats how far i could go". Basically not answering anything is his answer.
I actually respect Donovan's life experience, but he's a real bad person. If you're a girl, expect minimum A-, if you're a guy, well, good luck. I learned a lot in his case class, but he has the absolute biggest ego you can find in a prof. It's too bad because I really enjoyed the actual class, but his character ruined it for a lot of people.
Lot of students love to give Donovan criticism, he's a very polarising figure but you can definitely learn a lot from his classes and definitely brings over substantial experience to his classes. Personally I enjoyed taking class with Donovan and found his stories very engaging and interesting, albeit repetitive at times.
He's a really great prof if you are interested in case analysis/presentations. Has a specific sense of humour. Will talk lots about splashy the whale. I know a lot of people who took the class P/F but I didnt and did really well. He expects improvement but more importantly you showing effort for improvement. The workload was super manageable.
Prof Donovan is great: super knowledgeable, smart and makes lectures engaging. He does like to talk about his achievements but always stays on schedule. Get ready to here the same stories a couple times and the same phrases (ex: "it was downhill from there baby" or "bare with me for a second")
Wondering what class you have next and realizing it's Donovan's is a very satisfying feeling. Lectures are interesting, you don't see time going by. Beware of the Excel assignment, don't wait too long to start it. Final was clearly easy when you know the stuff, but it got curved down apparently so I was somewhat disappointed about my grade.
Big ego. I think that's why Mcgill's business school is not as good as U of T. Like to consider the freshman "case babies". Many profs in Desautels have those egos. I think that's why McGill has been ranked out of top 50 university in the world.
This class is not as hard as it has been portrayed. Memorize the slides and you can get an easy A- (wish someone had told me before). Go to class regularly because his slides aren't self explanatory. His slides are bullet points and he elaborates in class. Go to class during the EXCEL and ACCESS lectures otherwise you won't be able to do it.
hard to get a good grade in his class
Course concepts arent challenging, and yet RGDs exams are impossible to succeed on. The mix of obscure-at-best and never-taught-at-worst concepts make the exams less a measure of a students knowledge and more an arbitrary normal distribution grade generator. Add in brutal group work + inaccessible TA hours and this course was truly dreadful.
Hard exams with obscure information and examples; repetitive lectures; interesting content but poorly taught. Doesnt respond to emails regarding extensions or conflicts and huge ego makes him unapproachable and hard to reach. The human embodiment of yikes with all the unnecessary comments and self-serving personal anecdotes.
Summary: Course: Interesting Content, Very poorly taught by prof. Donovan Professor Donovan: -Tests include material that was never taught -Rarely replies to emails -Huge ego -Will repeat stories of his 'successful case competitions' every lecture, then rush through material
Avoid taking a course with Mr. Donovan at all costs. Multiple choice portion of exams rarely include material taught in class. Deducted the whole class average by 5% as he believed an average of B+ was too high. Huge ego, in and out of class.
I withdrew three times but took it with Donavan and passed. I am really glad i did. I enjoyed his lectures and glad i took it with him. However our grades were curved down because the average was so high
The finest professor at McGill. Truely cared for each student. Thank you Professor Donovan for a wonderful case class.
The best teacher in my life. My respect for this incredible professor. He changed my life. May he rest in peace.
