I have never had a teacher who was so self-important before. If you could make a comment about his precious novel every week or so you'd be in his good graces. But if your opinion of good writing differed from his, you were screwed. I still got an A in the class, but it felt like a waste of time.
I enjoyed the class, though he was very ambitious about what we could accomplish. I did not like the story packet we had to pay $30 to download and then didn't use for the class, but the stories were at least interesting. Still, it's good for anyone interested in writing.
Extremely high volume of work for a 3 unit class. This is the only high level eng. class i have taken but from what i have heard about other classes,R.Dry's class has a LOT of work.
As with previous poster, Dry gives WAY too much work for a 3 unit class. Difficult grader, docks points for everything, especially essays. Doesn't give us enough time to write essays, not even some kind outline as to how he wants it. Expects us to know everything about literature at the first try.
Took the class online thinking it'd be easier to handle than lecture class. definantly wrong. Work due twice a week, at least 3 major essays(9+ pages), constant peer feedback due on message boards every week. Not fun. Would not reccommend unless highly self motivated.
you must agree with him
I don't think he likes teaching. I think he likes the the fact that he's a college professor. If you don't do things his way you're screwed (have to deal with it...he's the teacher). If you don't see things his way you're screwed (and that's just wrong). Stifles creativity and crushes different opinions. My way or the highway sort of guy. ugh
I really enjoyed this class. There is alot of work involved, but you really grow in creativity and I enjoyed the pieces he chose for our reading and writing. I really like this instructor and would like to take another class under his instruction, but I am transferring. I found him helpful and supportive.
He is a very hard grader and claims he encourages creativity. News flash! He stifles it. I read his book and I don't think he knows what creativity is! He is not interested in the class at all. He has to ask for help when trying to answer questions on books he picks to read. the books we read all have some reference to the subject he really likes,
He would have tantrums and leave the room if the class wasn't grasping a concept or giving answers that he wanted. I wrote a paper, and he wrote an insulting note (something about it not being acceptable writing for college level, or his class.) I asked him about it, and he couldn't/wouldn't explain why I got a poor grade, or what he expects.
Fiction writing was awsome. It was very inspireing and I don't know about everyone else but I only remebering him mentioning his book once. As for the work yeah there was alot but it was interesting and this is college not High School you are going to have to work eventualy. I left this class compleatly inspired and wanting to write a novel!
I really don't like him and my classmates feel the same.
He is a weird teacher. He gives you a lot of work and theres about 5 essays. You have to attend every class otherwise after you miss 3 he drops you. He talks A LOT and it bores you to death! I wouldn't take him again!
I love Prof. Dry! He is so helpful. If your aim is to become a better writer, then take his course. He reads through each paragraph, providing feedback whenever necessary. I loved how clear he was about what he required and how enthusiastic he was about English. Take his class!
Loved him! Very good teacher! He was very helpful. Not a easy A though, you need to put in effort and really try. But if you dont get it, he will explain!!
Excellent instructor! Challenging work plus excellent learning experience.
He is a wonderful and very helpful instructor. Loved his online English 1A class.
Learned a ton! Excellent teacher, great sense of humor. Totally fun class.
Fantastic. The night class was very fun. Learned a great deal about writing. Great teacher.
Wonderful instructor! Always available for questions or help with writing or a paper. Test questions that make you think and challenging reading material. This was my 3rd time in one of Mr. Dry's classes and again I learned many new things.
He has an unveiled passion for writing that is sure to motivate many. To become a better writer you must write, is true so be prepared to write quite a lot. No matter your skill level, you will be well cared for in his classes. He is a gentle critic who can help you focus on bettering your writing, especially if you are open to suggestions.
He made the class fun and interesting. I, for once, actually wanted to go to class. Great environment, total recommendation to take his class.
Really enjoyed his online class. Very insightful, learned a lot about literature which is not my subject.
His online `A class was awesome. I am a pretty bad writer, and I got 95 and up on every essay, which is saying a lot! And...he's a cutie
Great teacher. Online summer class was great! Everything was extremely clear, and although the class was at double pace, it was as easy as it could be. Plus, I learned a lot more than just writing! I definitely recommend his online class for English 1A.
Very good teacher, very helpful and motivates you if needed! recommend him!
This teacher was very hard, and the other English 4 online students are right-he gave too much work. He not only killed online classes for me, but also, he killed literature for me. I'm done with this guy.
Mr. Dry was an amazing instructor! I absolutely loved his Fiction Writing class. I have learned so much from him. He's soft spoken, witty, patient, intelligent, inspiring, and brutally honest. Some people might not like that he expects and pushes you to write out of your comfort zone level. But, I loved it. He's awesome!
His expectations are clear, and the reading is easy. I'd read most of what we covered in high school. Read the syllabus and take his feedback to heart and you'll get a fair grade.
I took both Eng 1A and Eng 4 with him online. I've taken most of my classes online, and he's the best online professor I've had! Unlike many online professors he is actually engaging. When you turn in a paper, he gives you feedback and usually gives you a week to improve the paper for addition points. He cares about students and wants you to learn
Mr Dry is a great teacher and his class is very interesting. He uses short stories to teach the basics of literary analysis. The stories are interesting and provide good material for the essays. He expects essays that are well written and demonstrate logical thinking. You will work hard writing but if you put in effort, you will learn.
I really enjoyed this online course. There were plenty of great stories he had us read, about 3 essays required; he was extremely clear with what he expected of the students, and he was a very nice guy. Best online class I've taken thus far. If you enjoy writing and reading you'll love this course!
I took his online English 4 class. There are weekly assignments with lots of (interesting and creative) readings. They're not too hard but can be strenuous at times. There are 3 required essays but aren't difficult. He's straight forward and very helpful. If you put in the work and try hard, you'll get an A for sure.
Great class. Very helpful.
Richard really cares about his students and teaching, he's very passionate about writing and literature. He's one of the most understanding people I've ever met who genuinely wants to help you. He clearly loves his job and isn't one of those teacher's who'll never learn your name. He's very personable. You'll definitely learn and enjoy this class.
Professor Dry is an amazing teacher. I took his class online, but he is more helpful than teachers I take on compass. He understands all your problems and tries to help work around them. He gives really interesting books to read. I was never bored taking this course. Really recommend him. He also loves to get to know his students.
Mr. Dry was a fair and helpful instructor. The course had plenty of extra material and study guides to successfully pass the class. If you follow his syllabus and do the work, you can get an A. But don't get me wrong, there is lots of work that will improve your critical thinking and writing skills.
Professor Richard Dry is a great english professor! I just finished this online class and it was very easy, as long as you do everything and turn everything in on time, then you should get an A. He is very clear and gets back to your emails. He's a cool dude, take this class if you can :)
Mr Dry is probably the best English teachers I have had. He is very helpful and willing to work with you on improving your writing skills and reading comprehension. It was not the easiest class for me, but I learned a lot and did way better that I thought I would.
wanna learn to fight then take MMA. wanna learn to cook then take a culinary art class. wanna learn to write like a pro then take Prof Dry Eng 2 course after Eng 1. it's mandatory for CSUUC entry so its not basketweaving, but it's not a weed out class either. but if you put your work in, follow instructions, you'll get an A or B. simple.
Professor Dry has this online teaching thing down. He is organized and he responds to email quickly. There is a lot of reading and the writing assignments can be long, but that is what this class is all about, after all. He gives good feedback and there is always an opportunity to make changes for additional points. Be willing to work for your A.
Took 12A and 12B, and both times I got well over 100 percent in the class. Real easy class if you just do your part in the workshops and make sure to do your writings. This fiction class is actually what re-inspired me to write.
I completely respect Mr. Dry as an instructor. His class was clear and organized. However, it was NOT easy. Be aware that you are going to drown in work for the semester. I unfortunately took his class along with five other classes and working full time. After completing 61 units, this is the only class I have received a C in.
I took Dry's online class and not gonna lie, it was a lot of work. There were reading, writing, and peer review assignments due every week and a long (anywhere from 3-8 page) paper due at the end of each unit (like 3 or 4 total). I had to work hard for an A but it was definitely worth it. He's a great teacher.
very uninteresting and barely accessible; comments were basic, not intelligent
He not is very god teacher. Bad expanation on things all day for class starts and not open about test.
What a great guy. He really does care that you understand what he is teaching. I am going to miss this class and all the great people in it.
as i was saying.. He grades tough but the fact that he gives such good feedback helps out so much. I am looking forward to taking his 1A class. Its not going to be an easy class but I would rather be challenged by this great instructor rather than be handed an easy A by someone else.
perfect teacher. Take Mr. Dry for 1A. I have done my research on all other instructors and no one tops this guy.
Solid teacher. The workload is heavy, but he's a fair grader and gives good feedback in a timely manner.
He is not the beast teacher i have. But he is just hard grader for me. Overall he is desent but i would not take his clasd again
I appreciate his way of teaching, made sure everyone understands. Very clear grading criteria. Be in class at all time unless if something very inevitable happens, notify him for your absence. He is very understanding and If you miss one class he will do what he can to get you back on tract. I learned a lot in his class. Thank you Mr. Dry!
Professor Dry is one of my favorite professors. Lots of reading, but it's a pretty easy A, positive and helpful feedback throughout the entire semester, quick to grade and reply to emails (I emailed often for clarification because it is an online class). He offers a lot of extra credit in case you need it. Easily my favorite class of all time!
I'd say he's a great teacher gave good feedback, and emails ASAP. I kept a A halfway into the semester until one paper he claimed my writing was not suffienct and said "imperative to get ESL tutor. However, I'm a native english speaker and never had problems with an english class so I was slightly insulted. But I did appreciate his other feedback.
I took an online class. Excellent professor! Criteria/Directions are straightforward. Of course, reasonable amount of work. Readings, a lot of readings/writting but it is English haha. Work is manageable. Gives excellent feedback and opportunities for extra credit. I definitely recommend him if this is your first year in college or second.
Easy class if you put in the effort. Professor Dry is one of the best online teachers. He made the material interesting and enjoyable. He's responsive and always provides helpful feedback. He's understanding and has a lovely spirit. I didn't want the class to end.
he dosint give enough time for school class. for any students being not there for class will not know a lot of things for the next day, he doesint like any food in class that i brougt to eat. he makes class easy to do work so he is an okay constricter i would take him again if i couldnt find a better teacher also no late finals
One of the best teachers Ive ever had. I use to struggle with English in high school. Once I had him I realized I loved English & I passed with an A. If you do all your work and read the books you will pass. Unfortunately Im at LMC & I wish he taught there & I would take him again .Definitely would recommend him!!
He was overall a great english professor. The class was quite hard and had a lot of assignments, but he knew what he was talking about and gave back great feedback to bettee my writing. The workload is heavy but if you have time, i would recommend it.
fun teacher and gives a lot of helpful advice 4 essay per semester
His class isn't extremely easy where you don't have to try, but the guidelines are very straightforward and his grading rubric for the assignments are very clear. Most of his assignments he says "go above and beyond the minimum for full credit" and it isn't very hard to write an extra 100 words, etc. Good amt of reading so organize well.
Mr. Dry is an amazing Professor, and if you put in the effort, you will definetly get an A. The books we read are also interesting (unlike most english classes). He replies to his emails very quickley and grades papers in about a week. He does assign work that you have to put time into, although he is not a tough grader. He's also really nice! :)))
Professor Dry was my first teacher at Laspo and my experience was great! It was a lot of work but if you divide your time wisely it shouldnt be a problem. Overall, hes a great teacher who gives good feedback and grades assignments fairly quickly. He also lets you revise your essays for more points, and there are some extra credit opportunities.
Professor Dry was awesome! He posted all the work at the begging of each unit so you could move ahead in the class if you needed to. We had 4 papers total, and we were given 2 weeks each time to work on them (you can start earlier if you work ahead). He also chose amazing and very relevant books to read for the course! He responds to emails FAST!
Professor Dry is awesome. Id recommend his class to anyone. He is caring and understanding. Participation is a must. Even over zoom it was probably the most fun class Ive taken. Prepare to write a lot and share your stories with your entire class. Some will be new to writing and some very experienced just be ready to share.
Professor Dry is awesome, he is such a down to earth guy after meeting with him on zoom. There is no zoom meetings, just 1 we had that was the two of us. Honestly the class is easy, you just have to make sure you read the books he gives because for homework you'll have essays and discussion posts that require quotes. Definitely recommend him.
Professor Dry is amazing! He provides many opportunities for extra credit and gives detailed feedback to help you improve. He includes revisions for all major papers which can help you get full credit. The materials were engaging. There are 4 papers (2 personal responses and 2 research) for ENG1A but he helps you through it every step of the way.
I am not a native student, but he is the one will be there for you when you need help.Even though I am not well to speak and have lose on my Grammar, follow his opinions, you will get A in his class.if I need, I will take his class again. When you get back your paper, you will have one week to fix your paper to get extra credit.
Professor Dry was amazing!! I took his summer class which is around 18 weeks of work in 6 weeks. His grading isn't harsh, and he gives the best feedback. Overall such a fantastic teacher. I would 100% retake this class. Just don't fall behind on the essays! Also, anytime I was confused, I would just email him! He always emailed back quickly.
I took this class asynchronously, and it was the easiest class I have taken in my life. Almost everything is graded on completion, so you should get an A as long as you do everything. Because I was doing the accelerated class, Professor Dry claimed that the class would require two hours of work each day, but in reality it was much less than that.
The way he structures the class is very organized, structured, and easy to follow. Feedback on assignments is detailed and he always gives chances to improve your work. Extra credit opportunities are present, and he is always willing to work with you to address any issues. Truly cares about the well being of the student, amazing professor.
Prof Dry is amazing He is caring and always gives you a chance for full credit. Quizzes are easy if you just review the book one time. He offers many extra credit opportunities to improve your grade. There is no way not to get an A in his class as long as you complete your work. He cares more about your understanding and learning than your grades.
I was a concurrent enrollment student taking LPC classes. I loved Prof Dry's class. I could tell he loved being there, he was very caring. Easy A if you do your homework. Lots of extra credit. He really helped me be a better writer. I say attendance not mandatory because you can skip, but he just takes off points. He's flexible&super chill. 10/10
Prof. Dry is the BEST! I took his in-person ENG 11 Creative Writing class in Fall 2024; lots of hard work but really fun. We did LOTS of reading (published authors and classmates) and LOTS of writing (short stories, poems, TV script). Prof. Dry fostered a very accepting and encouraging creative space in which to learn. AWESOME!
An amazing professor, I had the class online and it was super easy to handle and it was even a fast pace class.
great professor. 3 essays are the heaviest sections of your grade.
Wonderfully nice and very humorous professor. It's easy to become friends with him as he's very understanding. Clearly passionate about his field as his knowledge of books and literature are vast. Easy grader and has even easier assignments. Lots of writing and reading, took up most of my weekends but he's also lenient for people with strict lives.
The instructor was 10/10. There are few teachers now a days where you can tell they care and want you to succeed in the class. I'm grateful Mr. Dry was one of them. Yes this class takes time and energy, but because he give us all the materials we need to succeed it's less stressful. This class is worth it. One of the best teachers.
Chill professor, he really wants students to succeed
I took his 8-week accelerated course, and it was easily manageable. There were a lot of tasks, but the work itself was not difficult. His grading rubric is clear, and he gives great, detailed feedback. He helps us prepare for the essays weeks in advance so as not to overwhelm us. Prof. Dry really wants his students to succeed.
I absolutely loved this professor, the class was pretty easy and very interactive. I would totally take one of his classes again!
Professor Dry was honestly one of my favorite English teachers ever. Super passionate about his job and he wants to see everyone succeed in his class. Sometimes the workload was heavy but as long as you tried your best on the assignments and the essays, it was a really easy class. There's a lot of reading but he makes it very manageable!
Class was not difficult, Professor Dry was difficult. I genuinely did not learn a single new skill in this class, and no improvements were made. Majority of the semester focused on his book Leaving, and didn't teach any valuable skills for writing. He graded other students unfairly, as opposed to those who didn't speak against his book.
Clear Instructions, plenty of extra credit, overall a great teacher and an easygoing dude.
Took a 6-week summer course and did not find the class overwhelming at all, 2 essays and 1 required reading. I liked that everything we learned was more applicable to daily life compared to other English classes. There were a lot of extra credit opportunities and absolutely no busy/unnecessary work.
