He's a pretty good prof, he makes you read the text book by doing weekly chapter assignments. There is ALOT of assignments in this class, and he seems to hand them out at the same time so it can be hard to keep track of them all. But overall you learn a lot, if you do the work.
This class is very easy, but the most annoying class I have ever taken. Richard does not teach anything, instead he makes you write 8-10 page responses on the textbook every week, and do a group project responding to your response every week. I would not recommend him, the course work is easy grades but their is a LOT of it.
So bad he gives out 10 page responses weekely on top of other assignments he gives out and you can never miss class because there is in class assignments daily, avoid him if possible.
Richard's dedication to good teaching - and to his students - is inspirational. Awesome guy, great teacher.
I love Richard!!! He actually cares about his students. Too many laughs in his class.
This man helped me through more than just school. Great prof, good mentor, good man.
Richard (in comparison) is the easier of the few. His teaching methods are questionable, but he makes the class feel comfortable which allows conversation. Good mentor, flexible vetting hours and an all around talented proff!
Richard is a great teacher and sincerely cares about all his students. I would recommend Richard to anyone.
I love Richard. He's very approachable and knowledgebale, and he makes time for his students no matter what. He is an open and wonderful professor -- my favourite in the Journalism Program. He has flexible hours, and his dedication to journalism really makes him amazing.
Richard is an amazing professor, and great guy. He was one of my favourite instructors in the journalism program. He is a fair marker, and was always available to vet or give advice. There are quizzes in almost every class with CP style and the required readings, but that is an expectation for reporters. He also gives opportunities for bonus marks.
Richard is a wonderful professor. He is a seasoned teacher and clearly enjoys being with students. He is super available. Crazy available. And he returns all assignments within a week. More than that, he reads all work carefully and writes lengthy responses that I have learned so much from.
richard's the bomb! best prof ever
He made the class exceptionally interesting. I learned a LOT. I'd recommend him to everyone.
Frickin awesome. He really gets it. Greatest prof ever.
Wicked photographer and ditto as a professor. I learned more in this one course than all my other courses combined. Every class is an experience.
Second class with this prof. Each was handled very differntly, but totally worth the experience. Somehow he pulls the best from each student, and forms a tight community. We all went for beers after the last class andit felt like we were a team or club or something.
Best prof in the journalism program hands down. So informed. Still freelancing a LOT. Kind of a senior statesman in the photojournalism world. Knows all the local news photographers. On his game as a photojournalist and a prof. What a combo.
I had Richard for a class called Photojournalism Projects. He changed my life. He changed the way I see the world. He changed my personal goals and aspirations. He doesn't just teach a course. It's so much more.
Not only is Richard a knowledgable instructor, he is a genuine, caring and excellent human being. It's not everyday you find a teacher so truly vested in the success of his students - Richard is amazing.
Top notch prof. Makes the course all it can be.
Very engaging...makes me want to switch over into information design! I thought his classes were fun and informative. Seems like a reasonable marker.
Richard is phenomenal! He's super friendly and makes class really interesting. Only one major assignment and 2 quizzes plus he's an easy marker. There's a lot of class discussion that's usually quite inspiring. Definitely take any class he teaches!
Richard is such a nice guy. You can tell her is passionate about teaching you what he has learned. Amazing teacher and amazing photographer. Only one big design project and two quizzes. The 2nd quiz is open book. Really hoping I get Richard again in the future!
Richard is an awesome guy with so many stories to tell. He is passionate about what he is teaching. Amazing teacher and amazing photographer. I recommend him!
Laidback guy who takes interest in the students' success
Top notch prof. Just the best of the best. So knowledgable. and such a brilliant coach and mentor. Take a class from Richard if you possibly can. You will never have experienced anything like it. It's an indescribable experience into positivity, "real" learning, and transformation. Thank your Richard for changing my life! !
Good Prof, but honestly kind of a rude guy. Alot of reading which definitely pushes you to reach a deeper level of thinking. Journal Responses worked well, same method could be taught by any prof...
Good prof, great attitude, good guy overall.
Would highly recommend him to anyone! He's accomplished and inspirational, and his lectures are interactive and interesting. Show interest in the readings and topics and you'll get good grades. He encourages you to think outside the box. Awesome prof in and out of class.
It was a privilege to have Richard as a professor. He has an amazing amount of passion for what he teaches, as well as helping his students. He is open to meeting with students for a beer, and will help out in any way he possibly can. I have asked him for help in a separate course and he has gone above and beyond. Amazing prof, even better person.
Richard respectfully treats his students like people going into the workforce, preparing students for the real world. He always offers his assistance and encourages students. Yes to get that A, attendance, assignments, and teamwork is crucial, but he has the enthusiasm and knowledge needed to make his classes inspirational!
I had a bad experience with this prof, found him to be rude and inconsiderate. He does my have sympathy for missing classes even for emergency situations. I also found him to be unclear about essays, since most of the class bombed the first one and still did not claim it was his unclearity that caused us to do poorly. He also went over lecture time
Honestly, I think he's a love him or hate him kind of prof, but most people seem to adore this guy. Great experience, tons of knowledge, enthusiastic, super nice and can go out of his way to help. You have to do your work and show up, but by the end of the semester it's a piece of cake, you're used to it. Wish I could have Richard for every class.
He is very helpful with giving feedback. The assignments are every week but they are all very easy. Would take again.
Richard is one of the best profs I've ever had. I have learnt so much and my writing skills have improved greatly. He is very passionate in his teaching and gives a lot of detailed feedback to help you improve your writing. My only complaint is that the amount of writing assignments every week is very overwhelming.
Such a good prof. To be honest, I thought this class was going to be so boring considering it was called Media History; however, Richard makes this class fun and very engaging. Obviously make sure you go to class and do your assignments, otherwise you're not going to do well. Would definitely take him again!
Richard is an insightful professor. He really knows a lot about technical writing and has good teaching methods. I enjoyed the projects and exercises that we did in class, as they did help me improve my writing skills a lot. I would recommend taking a class with him if you can, but if you do make sure that you show up!
Really cares for his student's! Will maintain a relationship with you throughout the years and help you achieve goals in any way he can.
Didnt teach anything, just assigned a lot of essays and critical analysis responses weekly. Was hard to complete everything each week and caused a lot of unnecessary stress.
Richard is opinionated, rude, and doesn't seem to truly care about his students. I enjoyed the class content but he made it dreadful.
Richard is a great professor who really cares about his student's success in the course. He gives good feedback on each assignment. Richard made this class fun with group projects and class activities. I am very glad to have had Richard as my professor and I hope to have him again!
Richard's classes are by no means easy, they are essentially writing boot camps. He is the only prof at Mount Royal that takes the time to go through proper writing skills, grammar and how to write an APA paper. Though I struggled in his class, and often cursed at the heavy workload I look back and remember how I actually learned valuable skills.
He knows his stuff, but he gives out too much unnecessary work. The workload he gives is too aggressive considering he isn't even teaching a Major. Also, very vague with what he wants his students to do and can be confusing.
Lots of paper writing, sometimes even 4 papers in a week
The worst part of this class was the amount of homework. Weekly essays, on top of a group project with people in different programs. Richard himself is fairly old-school and isnt very sensitive around triggering subjects, however he is hilarious and really wants all his students to do well and learn lots in his class. Show up, do the work, pass.
Richard is a quirky professor. His intro to communications class requires no textbook, but I recommend getting a binder to keep track of handouts. Be prepared to print your weekly personal responses that range from 600-2500 words. This class requires lots of self reflection and deep thought. His assignments lack a clear rubric. Be on time!
You could not pay me enough money to take this class again. Gives out way too many assignments with little time in between, and the lectures are long and dull with very little chance for interaction. Not to mention I found him to be very rude with little respect for his students. Save yourself the debt and just go watch paint dry.
My COMM 2501 class gave me many long, stressful nights. When it says 8-10 hours of weekly homework, it's true. I found the course material to be quite dry. Although this course was rough for me I wouldn't trade my experience for the world. If you take this class with Richard writing will become so much easier and you'll NEVER lose an APA mark again
Richard Erlendson is a passionate prof, and he really cares about your success as a student. He is always willing to help. And as long as you do the work, you should have no problem in his class. I learned a lot about APA writing from his class, so I recommend him if you wanna sharpen your APA skills. Very approachable, and an overall great prof.
Richard is truly one of the few outstanding professors at MRU. Ive taken two classes with him and I can honestly say that I grew in knowledge and skill immensely both occasions. Aside from the great value which his courses offered me, he was a delight to have in the classroom. Hilarious, authentic and caring could all be used to describe Richard.
Nice person and professor, but I just didn't like the way the syllabus of his class was structured. Too much readings, too little time. I didn't like it, I didn't get it, I just hope he can just move to an island.
I had Richard in my first semester (Fall 2019). He is one of the most helpful profs you will ever have. He genuinely cares about your success and goes out of his way to give you great feedback. As long as you work hard, you will easily succeed in his class. If APA writing is one of your weaknesses, Richard is very helpful in your improvement.
Avoid this teacher like the plague, he has to be one of the rudest uncaring teacher I have ever had. When you ask for help he ignores emails or replies with an attitude. Refuses to give feedback, when instructions are off on assignments he will say you're the only student to have an issue. I will never take his class again. 10/10 don't do it.
I used to love taking classes with this professor. He was very engaging, friendly, supportive, and caring in person. Unfortunately with classes all going online, Dr. E has not been able to adapt to digital learning. Expect vague instructions in weekly emails, confrontational responses to basic questions, and minimal feedback on assignments.
Way to much work and unfair grading. Expect to get a 0 in at least one paper, if not all of them. Avoid like the PLAGUE!
The GOAT Prof at MRU
Richard is the only prof I know of who actually teaches APA Style and then reads essays super carefully, which really helped me improve my writing. If you need help with writing - he is a savior!! Very passionate and compassionate with students.
Richard is simply an APA GOD!!!!! You are guaranteed to learn more about APA than any other professor EVER!! He is very easy to reach via email and responds quickly. The one thing that sets him aside from other professors for me personally, is the GREAT DEAL OF CARE he has for his students. He will GO ABOVE AND BEYOND TO HELP YOU! FANTASTIC PROF!
Dr. E always gave thorough feedback on papers and seemed to really care about his student's success. I took this class online so it was really great that he responded to most emails within minutes. He taught us a lot about APA style, which helped me to gain confidence in my writing and my ability to properly cite my work!
Dr. Erlendson is a great prof, I highly recommend him. The adjustment to his expectations and writing standards was a bit of a shock to me at the beginning of the semester, and the workload was quite heavy. The class is also quite self-oriented. However, Dr. E loves connecting with his students and helping when they ask. Take advantage if this!
Professor Erlendson intimidated me at first, but once you get to know him, he is incredibly caring and is there to help. You do have to adhere to certain ground rules in his class, but it kept me in a solid routine and I never fell out of line. He assigns quite a bit of reading, but most of it is interesting. You will master APA style with him.
Dr. Erlendson really cares about his students and the content he's teaching. I really enjoyed taking his course, even online, and found him to be respectful and funny. He's punctual with his email responses and his grading. Definitely recommend.
This course with Dr. E. was online because of COVID. He set a whole new standard for online learning - from creating a massive website with super interesting articles and video clips to a course schedule set on Day 1 to amazing weekly emails that included a review of what to read, what assignments to complete and extensive extra information.
Dr. Erlendson is a great professor, his class is innovative and very self-oriented no attendance mandatory! Hes a very nice guy and I would take his class again!
Lots of readings/writing so if that's not really your thing then this class might be a challenge! However Dr. Erlendson is a real gem and if you need this course for you're degree this is the guy you want to take it with! Very knowledgeable about all things APA and truly cares about your success as a student! Very quickly responds to questions
One of the best profs at MRU! He is so caring and open all opinions. Definitely an easy A as long as the effort is put in.
Awesome prof. The content for the course is enjoyable. Worry about word count more than grammar or content when it comes to assignments. Recommend watching videos on the readings he assigns before reading them. Some are confusing. He wants to see critical thinking and an independent mind. Most work is done alone or in groups. (Took during COVID)
Professor Erlendson is a great professor. The course has a lot of dense reading but it starts to get easier and you feel a sense of accomplishment when you don't need a dictionary anymore to understand the material. Professor Ereledson takes the time to help and explain things.
One of the best profs and best classes I have ever taken. Richard gives a lot of readings and the amount of writing can be annoying to some people. However, you do the work and you will gain perspectives unparalleled to anything else. Richard gives the best feedback I have ever received. He encourages you to dig deep and wants the best for you!
COMM2501 with Dr. Richard. Erlendson has proven to develop my writing skills beyond what I could expect. He was only ever an email away and went above and beyond to help me learn APA. This was by far the BEST Prof; he has been the greatest investment within my University Career. You will not regret taking his class if you want to ACTUALLY learn.
This class was amazing. My group, amazing. My growth, amazing. The prof, amazing. What a wonderfully amazing class. Richard, you are amazing.
I've taken three courses from Richard now. He really cares. Super enthusiastic teacher. Do the work. Know your APA. You're gonna see an A+. I tried taking COMM 3500 from another prof... Richard is a lot better. Choose Richard.
If you arent from the comm department and are finishing your degree TAKE THIS CLASS WITH RICHARD! Focused a lot on APA and the content was actually quite interesting. Learned about the evolution of media formats. Richard is a gem! Super sweet, personable, loves to help you and will always be there to help!!
He values quantity over quality. Doesn't matter if you write fluff as long as there's lots. For that I don't trust his teaching style - everything I did felt worthless because it wasn't meaningful, just for a word count. But if you're good at writing a lot of words, he'll never read it. Poor feedback. Easy A, but not a good academic experience.
Richard is an amazing proff!!!! After returning to university after a 20 year break, this class was exactly what I needed. Richard is Radient and very approachable. He is always availible via email and gives lots of positive and negative feedback so you can improve on what you lack. Take this class!!! Any negative reviews on here are fake news.
this man is engaged in inappropriate activities with kids. He told us about how it was his job as a photographer to hang out at parks and photograph kids. He then showed us several photos of naked kids. I dont know how to report this, but mru or police should get involved
350 characters is not enough to describe Erlendson. But with brevity I will try. The most abrasive impossible to please prof, always contradicting himself & course outline. Any question asked will be met with an unhelpful and demeaning reply. Just because a prof has a phD does not mean they can teach. Self obsessed, god complex. Avoid at all costs.
Erlendson is an egotistical teacher who doesnt know how to make a class interesting to save his life. In short, he doubled the assignment load after we finished the first assignment, reads his slides word for word, and on multiple occasions, talked down to his students when asking questions to the point he is red in the face. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
Richard has an incredible gift for teaching, specifically APA formatting. Not only does he always provide helpful feedback, but it's easy to be successful in his class. He constantly provides tons of opportunities to improve. He respects students and their time and tries to be as helpful as possible.
I was in Erlendsons 2501 class this semester and although it was a heavy course load, I enjoyed it. His classes were engaging, he was easy to talk to and showed grace to students allowing them to resubmit assignments they didnt do well on. I enjoyed the content and would take a class with him again.
Richard was an amazing prof. He was simple and straight forward when it came to his marking, which is what I like. He gives his students the tools to prepare them for 3rd and 4th year which is helpful. He was also always in a good mood and helpful, especially when an extension was needed.
Dedicated, caring, and there to help you learn. If you want to see yourself grow as a writer, join this class - just show up, write a lot, and be engaged, easy A. Don't be discouraged if you get a 0 on the first essay, as you can fix it and resubmit. This was my favorite class this semester, and I highly encourage everyone to take it if they can.
Richard is an incredibly understanding prof that wants his students to achieve the best they can. He has high expectations on students work because he wants you to grow your skills and progress from the last assignment. I was going through a lot this sem and he was so kind and understanding. Be honest and willing to learn and he will understand! :)
I completely changed my mind about having Richard as a prof. I had him last Winter 2021 while taking his class online in Vancouver. I dedicated the time & effort to complete all the assignments and pass his class. For those who are not familiar with his classes, DO ALL OF THE READINGS EVERY WEEK, DON'T FALL BEHIND. Really nice guy!
I have never met a prof as nice and as caring as Dr. Erlendson. He really wants his students to succeed, and he is always willing to support you. All of the course material he gives are really valuable and academically enriching. I thoroughly enjoy taking his class. Dr. Erlendson is a real gem!
This is my second time with Prof. Erlendson and once again I am having a hard time in his class due to the amount of work we have to do. When we have lectures to 'help' us for our homeworks, all he does is read through the powerpoints word for word. He also doesn't give good feedback or give any clarity as to why we get the mark that we get.
For the past three years, I have purposely chosen Dr. Erlendson's classes because he is one of the most thoughtful and sincere professors. In my first year, I took COMM 2501 with him, and he dedicated an entire session to teaching us the APA citation style which has really helped me succeed in all of my other university courses!
As a person Richard is very nice. However as a professor he is among the worse that I have had. His lectures taught us almost nothing about the concepts of photography he more so grazed over them. It is super vague and alongside that he often does not provide useful feedback regarding your grade. So often times you do not know how to improve.
I find it really frustrating seeing people say bad things about erlendson because he's seriously the kindest, most caring, and understanding prof EVER! He literally sets up his students for a successful future right from the get go. Don't be lazy, just take his feedback and you'll become an amazing writer, I promise.
Honestly, I have had classes with Richard previously when he first arrived at Mount Royal University and I think he has become a really great instructor over the years. Communication (funnily enough) is a MUST in this class. Both with your peers and Richard. Be present, open and realistic with yourself on how much time you need to read papers.
Dr. Erlendson is the most caring professor I have ever had! He only wants to see you succeed, and he does the best he can to help you succeed. He gives stellar lectures, and I always learn so many new and wonderful concepts in his class. Dr. Erlendson always gives valuable feedback, and it always motivates me to continue trying my best.
I took this course my first year of university and failed it horribly. I've now recently retaken it with Richard Erlendson and I'm doing amazing. I expect to finish this semester with a A or A+. Richard is quick at responding to emails, gives encouraging feedback and has an easy to understand layout of course work. Recommend!
I took COMM2501 with Dr. Erlendson this spring and thoroughly enjoyed his class. He gives great feedback, sets clear expectations and replies quickly to emails. The course requires a lot of writing & you need to give detailed responses, but it is not overly difficult. Take the negative reviews with a grain of salt - Richard is an excellent prof.
My favourite professor so far! Heads up, in the first few weeks you may despise him, but by the end EVERYONE was so happy they took his class. But really, as long as you show Erlendson you care and are trying your best, you should do just fine.
Richard still makes his students hand in hard copy paper even though all of our assignments are on D2L. He is overall just a complete loser. My brain hurts when he talks because he is such a nerd. He thinks he is funny and I struggle to keep my eyes open in his class. do not take a night class with him you will fall asleep.
Prof Erlendson is one of my favourite teachers by far. He is clear about what he expects and takes the time to get you there and help as much as he can unlike other profs. His classes are always entertaining and never boring. He really cares about his students and helping them succeed.
Avo id him, steer clear.
I enjoyed professor Erlendson's class, he taught APA style in a way I could understand, in other classes I had a hard time grasping. There is a fair amount of writing but there is no final or midterm and I enjoy writing more anyway. He is a fair marker and easy going professor who is very understanding to any out of class issues.
Fantastic professor
This is the only class where I was actually taught how APA Style writing works-- a great skill for all university classes. I wish I had taken it sooner. Richard is passionate and therefore makes class/all topics more interesting than I would have ever found them otherwise. Do your homework and it's hard to do bad in the class and on future essays.
Richard is an amazing professor, this is my second class with him. He is caring and considerate and very encouraging, I recommend him to whoever I can. Make sure you do your readings and homework submissions and you will do well in his class. It is a lot of writing and you will be forced to learn correct APA citing. Richard is my favourite prof.
I took this course as a third-year and Richard is easily the best professor I've had so far. He is really understanding and easy to talk to. He'll always provide you with second opportunities if you don't do well on an assignment the first time. I learned so much about APA citations in this class that I'll do great in every paper in the future!
Richard is such a caring prof. You will have weekly write ups but they are easy if you follow the instructions which are made very clear in each of them. The textbook is easy to read and you really just have to cite it in the weekly write ups. No Tests only essays. He is a very sweet man and I would recommend him to other people.
Richard is super caring and funny, he comes across rude in the beginning but he is truly passionate about what he teaches and ensuring that his students are succeeding. He gives amazing feedback and opportunities to make up for marks when needed. He teaches APA style in a clear and informative way, wish I took this class with him earlier
Dr. Erlendson was passionately dedicated and committed to providing an organized course structure, detailed assignment feedback, and timely grading--enhancing the integrity of the COMM discipline. Additionally, his remarkable support and encouragement throughout the semester were invaluable and helped me to grow and develop tremendously.
This teacher teaches fr just take his class. His assignment rubrics are spot on and tell you exactly what you need to do in order to complete the assignment. You get your marks back on time and if you email him for help he actually helps you. Also the topics you study are interesting and well thought out. 10/10
I meant to write this last winter semester. However, I think the time passed show's how important Richard is. Richard is sharp in terms of what he expects, but he CLEARLY and easily explains how to get an A (and beyond). Most importantly, he has been the most caring prof so far for me, @ MRU. If you read this Richard, genuinely thank you.
Richard assigns papers weekly BUT if you follow his instructions you can get an A or A+ easy. He does assign a huge paper but once it's done the majority of the course is over with. He is a fair marker and he is understanding if you need an extension. Ive had him for both COMM courses and I would highly recommend.
He takes a while to warm up to but overall is good. Fair marker and tuns of feedback. If you follow APA guidelines and listen in class you can get an A
honestly not bad but i had to write a lot. and i mean A LOT. one of my papers this sem was 30 plus pages but he is an easy marker i will say. he teaches a lot about writing and communication theory. yes this might be a drier class but i would take erlendson over anyone else!
awesome guy
His lectures bored me to tears. He only makes you do group activities to force a participation grade on you, otherwise there would be no reason to come to class ever. Have good APA style and you'll get an A+, never took a single note or even listened to the nonsense he spewed.
HARDEST MARKER! I usually get A's in all my APA writing assignments, but Richard was such a tough marker- for the sake of my sanity I had to withdraw.
Super hard marker
The guy is obsessed with APA. I followed the guideline of APA and still got a bad mark. DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSES.
You may feel discouraged within the first few weeks when completing assignments, but trust me, this is an extremely important learning curve. Prior to this course taught by Dr. Erlendson, most of us have minimal knowledge on how APA formatting truly works, however, Richards feedback and passion is truly so valuable. Highly recommend!
Horrible manners. Do not take his courses.
Cares more about APA than his students while also not following APA guidelines himself.
If you want to become confident with APA, Richard is the prof for you. Can be intimidating at first but once I got into the swing of things this class wasn't bad at all. There is a lot of writing and one of my essays was around 30 pages, but Richard as a professor is not as bad as some of these reviews are making him out to be.
This course is very APA-based, which was a struggle at first, but after getting a general idea of what is expected the class is straightforward. Richard cares about your success, helps if you aren't doing well, gives great feedback, and provides you with exactly what ia expected. Richard is a great prof and I would take a future course with him
One of my favourite professors! Dr Erlendson seems to genuinely care about his students. He provides encouraging/helpful feedback and is a very generous marker! He is also easy to contact and is incredibly understanding/helpful whenever I have an issue. Definitely let him know if you are struggling and he will likely try to find a way to help you!
I have taken class with Richard on two separate occasions and in both he was fantastic as a professor. I truly enjoyed his lectures as well as the texts he would provide for us throughout the course. He is an incredibly understanding professor and is passionate in making sure all his students succeed. As long as you pay him respect - he will aswell
Such a caring prof! i have had Erlendson for two courses now and he is my favourite! I always feel inspired after leaving his lectures or class. I highly reccomend taking his courses.
Richard has been an amazing professor! He marks your papers SUPER fast and provides very great feedback to help you succeed! This class can seem intimidating at first with the strict APA, but it get's way easier with time and feedback from Richard. Would 100% take a course with this prof again!!
I took COMM2500 while abroad for a practicum and when I emailed him and asked for help/extensions he would always accommodate and was extremely understanding. Getting used to APA format was challenging at first but once I adjusted I did well in the course. He wants his students to succeed and gives out great resources and excellent feedback to do so
You get out of this class what you put into it. He really wants to see you succeed as a student. This semester I was struggling under a full course load and after talking to him, he had no problems with granting extensions. I wish more profs were like him.
Richard is awesome, by far my favourite professor. He taught me valuable transitional sentences that I always use in my writing, I am excited for comm 3500 with him. I would definitely recommend Comm 2501 and Comm 2500 at MRU with Dr. Erlendson if you are looking for a fun and engaging learning experience.
This course requires a lot of writing, including weekly wrap-ups and three major papers, one reaching 30 pages. Following his specific APA citation style is crucial for success, seemingly valued more than the content. However, it's important to note that the instructor was incredibly rude when I first emailed him. Overall, easy class.
I was very nearly homeless this semester and fell substantially behind in all courses. From the start, Richard has been incredibly accommodating and kind, which eased a lot of anxiety as I worked to catch up. His grading criteria/expectations are clear, answers to questions are helpful, and he gives good constructive feedback and encouragement.
Richard gives AMAZING feedback! He is extremely supportive and cares about his students' success. He is quick to grade and responds to emails right away. He is willing to help with anything you need. The course does require lots of writing and one 30-page paper, but as long as you get APA, punctuation, and grammar down, it is a breeze!
Hello fellow students, Richard is simply awesome. He is a true Students Professor. What that means is if you do your part he will do his absolute best to help you succeed. Show a little initiative, do the work, ask questions and not only will you do well in his class you will without a doubt become a better writer. He's simply the best in the game
Richard is my favorite proff at MRU!!!He is very knowledgeable, approachable and firm, however, he gives you (the student) the ultimate power to be creative and think outside the box. I highly recommend his classes to anyone who wants to learn impeccable APA style, and the ability to make yourself stand out as an A+ student.
This winter, I had the toughest semester in my academic life due to how hectic my schedule was. Some days I had no time for sleep or only squeezed an hour in. Richard was very understanding and highly empathetic with my situation. His encouragement and understanding kept me going. Hands down one of the best professors I ever had at MRU!
Richard is a very flexible, kind and caring professor. One of the best profs I have had in my 4 years at MRU. He is very straightforward, and if you follow his instructions and use proper APA formatting, you will be very successful in this class! Richard gives great feedback; you will have no issues following his suggestions and building off them.
Dr. Erlendson was knowledgeable, clear on his expectations, gave detailed feedback on the first assignments and if you didn't make the same mistakes, was a fair grader. The content he chose was wonderful and made me really consider how communication theories can apply to my studies and life. He was easy to reach as well. Overall, a great Prof
Professor Erlendson's overbearing confidence undermines his credibility as an educator. His reliance on outdated methods and refusal to acknowledge his shortcomings hinder students' learning experience. Expect essays to be over marked at the beginning, and unread at the end. Easy A but you wont learn much from him
Professor Erlendson thinks he's the APA king, but he's clueless. He brushes off questions like he's too good for them. We're left hanging with outdated methods and zero prep for the real world. His ego? It's off the charts, drowning out any actual teaching. Total letdown.
Richard is truly an amazing guy! APA formatting does matter a lot in his class so make sure your APA is on point or he will mark it F. I was about to drop the class but Richard didn't let me give up and gave me a chance to improve my grade with the remaining assignments left. He cares about his students a lot, and is a very quick grader! 1000/10
This guy contradicts everything he says, and is not clear about anything. This class has such simple content, yet he vastly overcomplicates it. He is super condescending, and extremely unclear about what he actually wants from you. Honestly the worst prof I have ever had. *no textbook, but a textbook worth of reading.
Prof R. is incredibly helpful and supportive. While the class is APA-heavy, he provides great feedback to improve your writing. Try Unstuck ai and the free textbook for studying.
Erlendson can seem a little bit daunting at first. He's very straight to the point no BS. But otherwise, he 100% knows his stuff, so just do exactly what he says and you'll do extremely well. He does throw in humor and he makes his lectures as entertaining as possible.
Richard is an awesome prof, He has improved my APA style writing hugely, he gives you everything and more you need to succeed, Apply yourself though, if you don't attend his classes and don't put in the effort it'll show in your grades, he's a very nice prof who cares if you care, everything has to be printed and handed in BTW. just do the work.
Dr. Erlendson is an amazing prof, as long as you show up and do the work you're guaranteed to get an A. He does care a lot about attendance so make sure you go to class if you want an easy 20% toward your grade. He responds to emails fast and clearly cares about his students. Although, he does want everything on paper, so make you have a printer.
OK guy w/ huge ego. Students pics were taken on his phone to remember names? Excessive workload & weekly assignments handed in physically to force attendance @ dull lectures which primarily focused on his own achievements. Expect to tailor your writing to his EXACT demands to do well. Failed to omit student name on "A+" example essay full of errors
One of the best profs I've had! Clear expectations, quick grading with great feedback, and genuinely wants students to succeed. Heavy on proper APA format, so follow his guidance—it's straightforward if you do what he asks. Attendance is mandatory, and all assignments must be submitted as paper copies in folders—so make sure not to miss class!
one of my favourite professors of all time. Very straightforward, knows exactly what to say to help you improve. 10/10
Great professor. The course material is easy to understand, and there are very few quizzes. There are four essays; two APA, which are heavily graded, and two reflections. Unlike many professors, The final project he provides time for, and gives you creative liberty. Overall, it is a very easy class that sets you up for your future years.
Richard is an outstanding instructor who truly cares for his students success. His passion for the contents of this course are very evident which makes the course a lot more interesting. He takes the time to ensure that students understand the material, often showing examples. He provides lots of feedback and guidance when needed. Take his class!!!
He was a real one fr fr. Got me locked in and gave great feedback. One was homie. You just gotta show up and pay attention, which cuz if his mannerisms--they got away to get you to focus. Highly recommend him
Took him this fall semester, amazing professor! People say he's a tough grader because of how strict he is with APA. But that's apart of learning. Besides that, I recommend taking his COMM2501 class!
Richard blew me away with how much he set us up for failure. When I asked to meet in his office hours he said he was "out of town" for the week and then I saw him multiple times that week on campus and when I followed up I got no response. He took individual photos of us to "help know our names" on his own phone and so much more AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Richard is the goat! Best prof ever. Super organized. Detailed marking really helped me improve. Always gave assignments back in the next class. He actually teaches you how to write well. Upbeat and fun in class. So glad I landed in his course. I'm planning to enrol in every course he teaches.
So impressed with Richard and his teaching. He's fair, reasonable and accessible. I had heard terrible things about this theory course, but he made it so interesting and fun. I'm def taking the next theory class with him. Highly recommend.
Where professors fail Richard excels. As a PR major, I have longed for an instructor who doesn't expect students to pull information from nowhere. However, let this comment serve as a reality check. If you're not prepared to be there for your group and actively participate in assignments save your group the stress. You're an adult, act as such.
I did not learn much about media history and contemporary issues, but the professor has a deep passion for APA Style and that is what you are going to learn. I would say it is quite easy to do the assignments and get good grades after you understand what he expects.
Your welcoming approach fostered a positive learning environment. I valued your support in asking questions and your guidance on APA style. Your feedback improved my writing skills and confidence. I appreciate your care for my success and the skills I've gained from your class. Thank you for being an inspiring instructor!
Richard Erlendson was an exceptional instructor. Throughout my semester, he routinely led us through step-by-step instructions on effectively executing a proper APA-style essay. From what I observed, everybody who applied themselves to his course saw remarkable success towards the end of their semester. Make sure to attend all of his lectures.
Richard Erlendson was an exceptional professor. As the semester went on, each student who applied themselves to his class progressed towards the end of the semester. Richard prioritized his student's success during each class by addressing proper educational standards. Richard's professionalism and passion for literature stood out evidently.
Richard Erlendson was an exceptional professor. Each student who applied themselves to his lectures showed progression towards the end of the semester. Richard always prioritized his students' success, building them proper writing foundations for future University endeavours. Richard's passion for academia was quite evident throughout his lessons.
One of my favourite profs at MRU! I've taken a few classes with Richard, and honestly, he just gets better each time. He's dedicated to his students and always makes time to help. His knowledge of photography and journalism is impressive, and his APA tips are a huge help. If you want a passionate and supportive prof, take his class!!!
Richard doesn't lecture and does weekly seminars that take up the entire class time with your assigned groups. The way he structures his classes and his D2L is confusing. He cares more about quantity over quality and is really picky about APA. He's nice overall but as a professor, I wouldn't recommend his class.
LOVE HIM! No one else drilled APA into me like Richard did. I promise you that he actually REALLY cares how well his students do because even if you make a minor citation, boom: plagiarism! I've gone through uni without ever worrying about this because Richard taught it like no one else. Can't recommend him enough for any COMM class/jour class!
Avoid Dr. Richard Erlendson. His courses are overloaded with pointless busywork, and he enforces his own incorrect version of APA formatting, unfairly deducting marks. Rather than supporting students in their academic journey, he creates an environment where he's actively rooting against you. If you want a fair professor, look elsewhere.
no clue why some students dislike Richard, easily one of the best profs at MRU, if you show up, put in the work/listen you'll do great! he drilled APA into my head and now it comes very easily, very sad to see students giving him a low rating when I bet they barely cared about the class, he cares if you care, also best feedback I have ever received
Richard teaches you mostly about APA which you NEED to be good at in communications, it seems like some students dislike him for him being nit picky? but its all for good reason, for you to do well, everything is an incentive for you to show up and do the work, if you care about your grades in school, take him, he's a good teacher trust me
A fair marker, but that is literally the only nice thing I can say about this prof. He is just so weird, the weirdest prof I have ever had at MRU. Attendance is absolutely mandatory, and if you miss 1 class you will get a strongly worded email encouraging you to drop the course. He is SUPER passive aggressive, and condescending. Good luck.
took Richard's class at the beginning of my journey at MRU. 4 years later and I'm still taking his classes. Genuinely the most caring and funniest profs. He remembers every student, who they are, even who your friends are and pairs you up together, no other prof does this. I can't thank Richard enough for setting me up for success. My all time fav.
His instructions are unclear as to what he expects during assignments and essays. Missing one class will put you behind for the whole semester. On top of this he accused my friend of using AI and failed them, although they did not use AI for any part of their essay and it came back as negative for AI use on Turntin. He will not help you.
Avoid taking this prof if you can. His course is designed for you to do a large amount of reading and work, only for him to be incredibly nit picky when it comes to grading. His tests required you to retain an insane amount of information that doesn't progress your education at all. He always reads off slides & has little info to share on his own.
LOVE RICHARD! Taken multiple classes with him, and they get better and better each time. The workload is extremely manageable, and he's very understanding if you need an extension. He's so passionate about every subject he teaches, which translates into his lectures & makes them engaging. If a class is available with Richard, TAKE IT!!!
Richard is a very helpful prof. His apa slides saved me in a bunch of my classes. His final essay honestly helped me so much with my essay writing skills in other classes. He gives really good feedback. His humour is definitely something and he's really intimidating. He'd call out students that were late to his class and he's very blunt.
Honestly, one of the most caring profs I've ever had. He replies to emails in minutes and goes out of his way to accommodate anything you're struggling with. His lectures use his own photography, and it makes the class more interesting. He teaches APA so well that every other class in my degree felt easier because of him. Cannot recommend enough!
I'm shocked there are negative reviews because my experience was the complete opposite! He's patient, kind, and incredibly accommodating. When I first got his feedback I was shocked because he's so direct, but once you talk to him you realize he's incredibly supportive. He WANTS you to succeed and gives you a chance to do better
this is my second class with Richard, he cares a lot about student success, if you just put in the effort you will get a good grade, I guarantee, he answers emails within minutes, is incredibly accommodating and kind, he can come off intimidating at first but just show up and communicate with him and you'll do great, he provides the textbook too
Richard is a very unorthodox prof. In COMM 2501, we spent pretty much the entire semester learning APA style. He is harsh at times and expects everything to be turned in on paper. In the beginning I was really scared of him and his class BUT his class did teach me how to actually effectively do APA style.
Richard is one of the best and kindest professors I have ever had. His lectures are so engaging and helpful! He gave me perfect essay skills and made me an overall better writer. He truly cares about his students and their success; I would absolutely recommend taking a class with him! :)
Richard is an incredibly kind and supportive professor. Though I took his asynchronous class in my second year and never met him in person, he was a huge help with my MSW applications, including providing last-minute references. He genuinely cares about his students' success. If you get the chance, take his class at MRU - you will never regret it!
