Easy-going, friendly guy.
i would not reccomend anyone to take his class
When I first started his class it was completely full. By the end of the semester more than half the class dropped. I don't really understand anything from his teachings, and he only gives you three tests, so it is easy to fall behind.
This teacher screwed me and 30 other students from my class over. He is a bad teacher and loves to fail students.
This Prof. like to fail students! Very hard test and not helpful. Don't take hime take other professor! he is not fun and not friendly. he do his own teaching and not explain to the students.
If youre good at math, take his class if u want, i slept through it cuz he cant teach worth diddley. I wouldnt recommend him. If you play Warcraft, he sounds like the human peasent when he says "Helloooo"...=/....just an observation.

okay, so I am no brainy girl when it comes to math. But this man made me feel like a complete retard. For the sake of sanity, I had to drop his class. Funny, I am a graduating senior and can't get through his damn class. horrible teacher! run run run!
teacher is very cold-hearted towards students. easily irritable. doesn't like late students. marks people for tardiness. fair explanation of material but could be explained in a better way. more smaller test vs. 2 large ones would have been better.

Seems like he doesn't care if people r listening or not. He gives lecture like whatever. If u r good at math his class is super easy but if u need an extra help, don't take him. Lot of people failed. Do the homework and ask questions in the class.

He teaches straight from the book. Don't let him get to you...the material is confusing but you can pull through if you try. I recommend getting outside of the classroom help (CSUN tutoring lab did wonders!).
Very unwilling to provide extra help for students. At least hes honest about it and tells you from day 1 he wont help you and you better go to the math lab to get help. Cold, monotonous, same boring routine every class. STAY AWAY!
If your good in math, you do all the homework before the due date and you ask questions, you'll do fine. However staying awake in class or need extra help, you'll fail.
This is by far the worst teacher a student could ever take. The guy is a freaking moron. A friend of mine who was super ssmart in the class always corrected him. He rides a bike and he is not worth taking. Trust me the guy does not know how to TEACH math and hopefully one day he'll get a flat tire.
The only help he will offer you is to tell you to go to tuturing! Very hard and goes through the material too quick. You can tell he doesn't like to be asked too many questions. May come off as rude at times.Highly not recomended.
He's VERY LOUSY and MEAN teacher I ever had in my life. He's very no good teaching in math class! Please don't take that class. BELIEVE ME! You will agree with me 110%. Ask all students who had experiences with his mean teaching.

He does everything he could to give the student the best grade possible! The final exam grade will replace both your lowest test grade and quiz grade.. but only if it helps. See what I mean, he'll give you a chance to do well. This was my second time taking this class, and he was extremely helpful.
monotone lectures daily. seems a bit stand-offish at first, but is just slightly misunderstood... you gotta act like you're interested in learning for him to actually respond to your questions. i thought he was ok. don't miss class though, cuz it will hurt u.
Very nice, funny, helpful man. He tries hard, and does everything he can other than give kids A's.he replaced bad grades w good.He is a good teacher.He just can't make kids do their hw and stay awake in class to learn.you need to put forth effort, as in any math class.i studied and got a B.

this guy sucks all he did in the class was copy all of the book examples to the bard and thats it the tests and the quizez were lame and confusing and he didn't explain anything in the class.SO if you have any concern for your GPA and want to pass the class without repeating it DONT take this guy.
At first seems boring but then again what math class isn't. He's not difficult if you do the homework and ask questions. Final is not difficult at all.

He is not very helpful and clear on what he is teaching. During my semester, more than half of the class avareged 50%-Not good. I received 100% on my hwk's, but my first two test were F's. I pulled out with a C in the class, with an "all weeker" for the final.
What a waste of a semester. I worked my butt off all semester, even had a tutor twice a week and i could not pass the class. He does not help the students at all and just tries to fit in as much as possible. If you want a good grade in math 102 take soemone else. Dont have the same mistake as me.

took him in summer. Was pretty easy and helpful. Gives a study guide before each quiz/exam and uses questions directly from it. If you can memorize the study guides, you should be good. Also boosts your grade a ton if your there every class.

Horrible teacher, just gives examples from the book, so there is no point whatsoever to come to class. Not clear at all, not helpful at all. Make sure you take a different teacher instead.

He is an OK teacher. He is clearly just there to teach. However, he is not interesting to listen or look at. Very boring. Not sure what I have in class yet. But, everything that he went over with, is defenitely going to be in the test. Do take notes and review it before the test and you will be set.
hes an ok teacher. its so boring in his class. you have group work every single day. his lessons are clear but the grades are based mostly on test so you need to study and do good on them. you get homework everyday and a quiz every week. hes sometimes a bit monotone but i did learn from him.
He is a nice guy, but he is only there to teach. He really isnt personal in his teaching and his reviews consist of group work. He doesnt actualy ask questions on review dates. If possible, take a teacher who is a bit more personal. Whatever you do, dont fall behind.
Practically everyone in the class was failing- he's horrible at explaining things, there's a lot of hw for which you get practically no credit for doing. Everything is based on 3 exams and a final. Take something else if you're just looking for an easy A- this ISNT IT!

he was a really good teacher i dont know why hes getting such bad reviews his class was very easy. he didnt give 2 much homework. and u always work in groups so i didnt mind going 2 class cuz he would just teach for the 1st like 15 mins & then make us go in groups. & a lot of times we even got out early. he doesnt really talk, just there to teach.

If you are a genius at math, then he is for you. If you just don't care and want to get through a math class, don't even think about this guy. Doesn't explain things very well, and is very boring. do not suggest for the average student
Seemed like a nice guy. He was fun to mock, but if you miss the class you're ****ed. He teaches the material like every other math teacher, his tests are short and easy if you did the homework and went over the study guides he gives. He was completely well meaning but did not make the material interesting. I fell asleep often.
I'd say he was a pretty easy teacher. everything was straight out of the book. He also let class out early anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. You could stay and ask him questions if you wanted, but nobody really wanted to. Quite the monotone speaker too, so it might make you sleepy. Tests are 10 problems each, 3 tests, 1 cumulative final!

Great Prof. The best Math teacher i had. (HE SPEAKS ENGLISH!!!) <~ can't go wrong with that. He is very clear and helpful. Loved the class. He gives homework it's 10 % of your grade but all the complaining aside, you know homework helps. Tests are provided by the department. (so you are getting same tests with better preparation)
I advise future math students to not TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR! He doesn't explain things very well, and if you ask him to clarify, he gets frustrated and doesn't explain it. Like stated, he's VERY boring, and honestly, I'm tired of seeing him in Hawiann shirts! Bad teacher, horrible explainer, gets mad easily... Don't take him.

I passed But i had to be there everyDAY.. and do all the H.W including passing quizzes and test. If u hate math DON'T TAKE HIM!

he goes straight to the point and it doesnt take him all the time class. he doesnt smile and doesnt help you , but with all the work he gives you , you will learn , and well i did like it because everything that he teaches is necessary. i really think is a good teacher
if you took calculus in hs got a b, or at least know the basics, then you should do fine in this class. speaks english. Do not expect nething elsefrom the teacher as far as helping you out. This teacher is NOT that bad... he teaches the lesson in a monotone voice then after that u work in groups & do class work. U get hw every night and a pop quiz once a week. He smiled twice the whole semester & thats only cuz some1 brought a live chicken to class. Dont expect a personality or anythin other than hawiian shirts. Over all easy class...

He's pretty straight forward, you go to class, he lectures, you do groupwork, and your out. He is open to questions, but come ohn it's math 93, high school stuff. You don't have to bgring your book every class, if you dont mind sharing, quizzes are too easy, but he does prepare you for the funal.

Worst Professor ever. He does not teach. He expects you to learn the material by him doing a couple of problems. Lectures are boring and his notes do not help. hi. i took his class a year ago over summer at LA valley college. he's.... ok. he is not energetic, etc... but he is ok. I was the only one left to take the final, everyone else dropped. but i understood what he taught, i got an A, and passed to go to statistics. so hes not SUPER GOOD OMG!!!, but hes fine. try to avoid him though.
If you like a teacher that smiles, and seems really nice and cool. this is not your teacher. I know I've never ever seen him smile he seems like he hates the world. the class was really easy. he lectures, you do group work, and homework. thats it. not hard

He is a good teacher. I didnt love the class, but I didnt hate it either. he was okay, pretty serious, but you need to get on his hood side. As long as you go to class, do your groupwork and homework,and not talk while he is lecturing, you'll be fine. Oh, he gives pop quizzes, but their based on previous lectures. EASY

I overall liked the teacher. Just do the homework, ask him questions, and study material, even the definitions and theorems. I feel he does try to make students pass as long as you show dedication. He is reserved and seems like he gets irrated when you ask questions, but if you don't know, ask him.
I enjoyed Fine's class. His lectures aren't that interesting, but he does give you detailed info and examples during the lectures, and he likes it when you ask questions TO HIM during class. He does not like it when people text or talk during class- it gets on his nerves and he let's you know. I got an A, and I think he is a good math teacher.

by far the worst math teacher i've ever had my entire life. 6 chapters are covered in each test, so you have to study 6 chapters per test. theres 4 test and a final. we finished the entire book which was 24 chapters, (it's a fairly thick book) he never gave us equations for the test so we had to remember it all, 75% of the class is failing,
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! a lot of homework, hard tests, noooo help whatsoever. cannot go to the bathroom, yelled at students for yawning. you cant even ask the person next to you a question without him moving your seat. puts students down if you ask a dumb question, and sometimes wont even answer your question. 3 tests and a final. DO NOT TAKE.
Good teacher, really explains things and will answer questions although sometimes he acts like they are things you should already know. Tests were okay, just study notes and the review sheet and its pretty much what will be on the test. Come to every class and do the homework and there is no reason why you can't get a passing grade in this class.

Prof Fine teaches as if we are high school students...you can't leave to use the restroom, he is annoyed when someone can't easily grasp a concept, doesn't enjoy answering questions. He is also extremely boring and monotone. All the homework for the section is due before each exam and he replaces the lowest exam grade with the final exam grade.
HORRIBLE!!!! i am an A+ student and i got a C (which i am proud of since this class has a 60% fail rate!) this class is hard enough without having a hard teacher. take someone else!!!
Good teacher! he only teaches for 10-20 mins and the rest on the class time we do group work! the way he explains each section every day makes the class really easy! :)
Easy to understand... If you aren't paying attention of course you'll fail. I learned more in this class than in my high school classes. It helps working with other students. Appears to be strict, he is at times. Yet I recommend the class, it was too easy.

He is unclear, rude, disrespectful and his tests do not correspond to the material he "teaches" in his class. 3/4ths of our class dropped. I really like this teacher! His method of teaching really helped me understand algebra, and he made algebra really interesting, because finally I was able to understand and comprehend it. He was very strict, and you need that to stay focused on the work. I recommend him highly!
I honestly hated this class so much. he wouldnt even "teach." he talks to the bored and doesnt care for his students. Dont take this class even if its the only one available. You will hate your self afterwards. my entire summer is ruined because of this. Now I need to find a junior college to make it up at because csun is way too exoensive. FML
I was scared to take this class because of the horrible reviews i read?but, i actually love this class. He teaches for 20 minutes out of the 1hr 30 min and the rest is group work. He lets us out early everyday. He answers questions and meets with you to make sure you're on track. I HIGHLY recommend him !
He's monotone but I learned a lot from him. Im a typical C student when it comes to math and i have a 95% in the class. Just study for his tests and GO to class! I've always had a hard time understanding but after his typical 20 min lecture I understand everything. Hes a good teacher as long as your put in some effort to learn.
Very stern professor but very knowledgeable and willing to help during office hours. Begins the class by asking homework questions and completes them on the board. The subject is overall hard to understand and doing the homework and asking questions definitely helps. Lectures can be overwhelming at times but the class is manageable only if homework
He is a teacher who is too strict, reluctant to help students with hw. Slightly condescending. Hes that teacher you talk trash about during break and during class. Nickles and dimes you on tests. 45+ questions per section (chp1 sec1) on hw. I recommend anyone reading this to NOT take his classes, only the brave should endure
Although I did not pass Prof. Fine's class, I will say that he is a very intelligent and helpful prof. He has a bit of a monotone in his voice, nonetheless he gets the point across smoothly and is very helpful if you show effort.
CSUN staff if you are reading this please take this into consideration. This professor does not care about his students all he cares about is his money. He is not helpful at all. For his fault he ruined my summer I am retaking now having to appeal for financial aid. All for his lack of teaching this is unfair. Please do not take him.
This is a Professor who says, "I am here for you after class if anyone needs help." It's amazing how few takes him up on it. I did. He is VERY generous with his time. He showed me Math is a talent. He is effortless with it and it inspires me to one day excel in it as well. He is also VERY generous with helping
Class was credit/non credit. Pretty easy but class is boring. We work in groups which apparently the math department requires. Attendance is mandatory. Teacher doesn't seem that interested, gives rude remarks and doesn't really help students. There are tutors in there who help WAY more. Easy class though.
Although this class was boring it was really east, he lectured, and we went into groups. He was always serious and would get upset for little things, but its funny. The TA's are very helpful. I passes this class and ive notice compared to other prof.s who teach this class too, homework is due the next week and its the online sections and thats it.
Richard Fine is a great professor . Although very strict and seriousI was able to understand the work. After every test he would encourage us telling us that we weren't done yet we still had more exams. Before the final he called us up individually and told us the score we needed on the final to pass. Homework all due at end of week too :)
Richard Fine is very kind person. I took his class, even through I was lated every day during the semester, and I did not do the sighnments that he asked for, I still passed the class and I missed 1 test. damn he is so nice,the only thing I do well, is I have gotten good grade in the test. I passed math 93 with 88%.
Dr. Fine was a good teacher but he moves at a slow pace and it can be difficult to pay attention. He does want the students to do well though.

Prof. Fine knows what he's doing. I agree, his class is pretty tough considering the amount of homework he requires the students to do. But, that only enhances our mathematical skills. He's a great professor and I believe that those who say he sucks probably doesn't make an effort to try to pass. NO EASY A. Work hard!

The class is boring and quiet at all times. The work is rarely hard just a lot of it. He's not such a bad professor. If anything he showed me how college HW can be. Students who complain about simple things aren't ready for college.

He is a good teacher when it comes to lecturing but can get boring from time to time. If you do all the homework and class work you'll be fine and go to tutoring before the test then you can pass the class with a C easily.

Simply awful. Doesn't teach,just reads out loud from the book. When he does explain something he over complicates it. I solved a problem correctly on a test using a method I learned in highschool and he marked it wrong because I didn't use the method we learned in class. Work was all there but he still marked it wrong and wouldn't change it.
He is not a very social guy but he is always there when you need help. I honestly thought he was a great professor and does not get enough credit for it. If you have questions make sure to ask him because if you don't you can't expect him just to know you are having trouble.
I will never take him again, i wish i would've looked at his reviews before i took his class. He is no help and doesn't care to help you. You ask a question about a problem and he literally will try to help you using 2 sentences for a math problem. He treats his students like grade school kids. I will not recommend.

This dude only tells you what do do, barely even explains one problem and by miracle of God, you're suppose to know it. He tells you what to do, but doesn't really bother to explain step by step. If math is simply a subject you don't have a passion for, and it's hard or you to understand, this professor will be your worst nightmare.
It's tricky with this professor, he is nice and awesome. When it comes to his teaching it's not the greatest. I did learn a few things and i am not the greatest person at math. I did pass the class. Show up, go to the tutoring lab, do your homework and you should be just fine.
He is a wonderful professor.. if you space out in his lecture you would be lost even though if it is your second time taking this class. Hes very nice and will help you. If you miss a test he would not let you take it, so go to the math department instead to take it

Not once did he give us a lecture or even wrote on the board to teach us how to do the work and he is pretty lazy. He gives a lot of homework and his grading isnt that good.
I was in this class for only 2 days, and that's all it took to convince me that he was not the math professor I needed. On the second day of class, he made us do workbook problems without teaching the material, he expected us to work in groups and figure it out. If math isn't your strongest subject, avoid this professor.

Personally, hes understanding (rarely) but if youre willing to study up until 3-4 in the morning, I wouldnt recommend taking him. He does not teach, youd have to learn the materials yourself. He gives pop quizzes. Dont stress yourself over a prof that does not teach.

The class was okay, but it was really boring. He would go over a lesson for the first 15 minutes of class, and then put everyone in breakout rooms for the remainder. The course had a midterm, a final exam, pop quizzes, and six tests, so you will spend a lot of time studying the material. Just make sure to study the classwork and you'll be fine.
He do not know how to teach. Everybody in the class is confused and annoyed. He is not understanding if you make a mistake even if its the first week and everything is new. He should not be allowed to teach a class.
Professor Fine's 91b class was very easy. He went over assignments in class and all you had to do was copy the notes and submit it. One thing that annoyed me was that the notes were due at 5:00 pm rather than 11:59 and the professor is kind of an old head and seems cranky but it was ez. The class grade is Pass/Fail and doesn't affect GPA. Easy pass

Professor Fine was one of the best professors I had. He explained the material very well. As long as you weren't absent so often, he makes math easier than it is. He helped a lot more compared to the math lecture professor I had. As long as you did the work, it was an easy grade/class to pass.
There was a plethora of people in my 91b class that did not like Prof.Fine, honestly I feel like he is misunderstood a lot of the times. He is very consistent with his attitude and behavior. He is stern, unenthusiastic, and boring, BUT he teaches, and he does a really good job at teaching. Im sure there are better professors but he did his job.
Did not teach, goes very slow through material and barely explains anything, has an attitude and gets upset if you go to the bathroom or anything, will get upset when you are asking someone for help, will call you out/get mad at you even if you are just looking at the board. 100% do not recommend taking this class.
Professor Fine's class is straightforward - take notes, do the work, and you'll likely get a decent grade. While he can be stern, unstuckstudy and other resources helped make the material click for me.

I'm taking math 105 it's not listed but he should have more passion to teach. I compared my notes to my fiends who take other teacher and you see the difference he give us the bare minimum and he goes through so fast you barely takes note and he gets mad if you try to take a picture. Would not recommend find someone else.
(MATH105) If you just show up to class, you're going to pass. It's going to be a boring lecture but he offers everything you need to pass. He hates phones being out and makes it a point to stop class so that you put it away. He isn't the best at answering questions, just go to tutoring to get extra help. Not difficult, but a drag overall.
Horrible professor by far, take if you want to fail 🚨!!! Super heavy on pop quizzes which no other class really does. If I could select more tags I would.😡😤 also super heavy on homework.
Very boring lectures and he is not open to questions. Phones are an absolute no and if you try and answer his questions right he almost gets upset. Just don't try raising your hand and asking questions in his classes. He runs through the problem and skips steps so students can easily get lost, and he won't go back to explain it.
