great teacher - clear, concise, and nice. its what a teacher should have. we read a lot, but its all good cuz he told us the info after we were *supposed* to read it =P

Flynn is a very cool guy. Laid back, good sence of humor, but as far as teaching, he lacks some there. Most of his "lessons" are like reviews of what most already know. Just make him be exact with what he wants u to do, otherwise youll be lost.

Flynn is a hella cool guy. He's a laid back teacher that assigns you a homework and expects it whenever. He's pretty funny and he's not boring at all. WHenever someone needs help, he was willing to stay after class..which is really good if you needhelp

Coo Ass teach take him! Very dis-organized, however there is no set due date on anything. Lets you re-write your papers, test dont count for much, just go to class and joke around with him and your Set!!

Flynn is a very GREAT person and teacher. I felt bad for just falling asleep when I was in class. He showed great passion when it came down to poetry or just about any book he assigned us to read. He might seem a little off, but a great person nonetheless. If you want to be lectured all day then he is not the teacher for you, but if you are more visual as I am Rick Flynn might be the one for you.

I took Flynn twice (101a & 101c) and received an A both times. He is a cool cat, but expects you to write in an organized coherent manner. If you can write with clarity you have it made. Frankly, those negative reviews look as though they were written by children. No wonder they found him hard.Take him and you will write better!

Very laid back and funny teacher. He will help you write a good paper to pass his class. I was a lazy piece of crap and I still got a C. I WILL retake his class for a better grade and for fun! PS: READ GRANTA!!

He is a great teacher, pretty easy and very understanding. If you need help with anything at all, just talk to him after class and he'll help you out with your problem. I really recommend that you take him.

Fairly laid back, likes to joke, gives help willing when asked. Will let you revise any essay to earn a better grade (he says the point of revising is to get you to correct and learn from your mistakes).

He's a fairly harsh grader, but extremely understanding in terms of essay writing. I hate English classes. But I loved professor Flynn's class. He does a great job of helping you to understand the content before you have to write an essay on it. He's a cool guy with a sense of humor and a personality beyond just being a teacher. I would highly recommend taking this class.

I took this as a summer class and overall Flynn was really entertaining. He had a great sarcastic sense of humor. He assigned a lot of interesting books. Not much homework was assigned. One thing is you really have to understand the stories because papers are written about them. He's kind of hard grading on papers but gives you chances to revise.

This teacher is not easy ,but he is very funny. if you participate and do all the homework, you will pass.

I took his class on summer and I loved to be in his class. He is very funny and if you work hard he will pass you. However, he is a hard greater but in almost every paper he will let you revise. I totally will take him again.

When I started this class, I thought it was one of the hardest classes I had taken and was struggling. But then I started bringing in my essays to Mr. Flynn to look over, and I ended up as one of three A's in class. He grades hard but you can redo the essays. He also helps with personal statements! He really helped my writing, take him to learn!

I just don't know why ppl said "don't take him if you WANT to pass" It's almost impossible to fail his class if you really "put effort" in it. Truely enough, he's a hard grader. But as long as you rewrite your essay, u'l at least get a B. Also,I'd put He's the most helpful professor in ohlone if you do visit him in his office hr!

He is a very cool, easy-going teacher. You can learn a lot from his class. He may be a a hard grader, but he is willing to let you rewrite and improve your grade. This is a very hard class, be prepare to suffer. I highly recommend others to take him! :)

Extremely interesting class, not hard to get an A if your accustomed to working (lots of rewrites). Also excellent class to take before transferring. He teaches how to write personal statements, get a better score on upper division English placement test, and general writing techniques. Highly recommended if you want to improve your writing.

Professor Flynn is an excellent instructor. It is not an easy class, but a quality class. He teaches important skills to improve composition. He is very generous with his time by critically correct essays with great feedbacks for revisions, stay after class to help and even extra help at the library before class. He actually teaches you how to write well. The students' that struggled spoke horrible English. It's not an easy class but he pushes you to become a better writer. Don't worry if you get a hard grade the first time around because he lets you re-write all your papers. You'll be successful if you re-read over the material and participate in class.

Flynn is a tough grader but a great teacher. He is very helpful when it comes to your writing, and gives you plenty of chances to raise your grade. If you participate in discussions and do all of your work, you will do just fine. He allows rewrites and is very helpful if you meet with him before and after class. He's a great teacher. I don't understand why anyone would say otherwise. He expects a lot from you but he never expects you to perform miracles. He helps you every step of the way if you just ask. You will find out what robust, concision, and metadiscourse mean. There was little assigned reading since more time was spent focusing on the essays. A lot of essay work is assigned, but you are given the opportunity to resubmit the assignment for a better grade, which the professor is more than willing to help you with. This is a great eng class.

He's a great professor, very lenient and understanding to eveyones different needs, I had a great time and if you want to learn something to take this course. He allows you to re-write your paper;I went from a 78% to a 92% on one re-write thanks to his help. I suggest to pick him as a professor.

He is a great professor! I had him for two semesters (101B and 101C) and did very well each semester. He is very straight forward when it comes to your writing so do not get butt hurt when he tells you things. He gives you a chance to re-do your essays if they are not up to his standards. Overall a great teacher with a personality to match.

He is Straight forward, blunt and has a sarcastic sense of humor. A little unclear at time, but never shy's away from spending more time with students who feel confused. Very hard grader the first time around, but grades improve significantly after a re-write. If you easily get offended by comments don't take him otherwise he is great

SU'11 was fast but I still got an A. Semester may be better. He's a hard grader but just revise to get a better grade. You must FOCUS your paper otherwise expect a C. He's vague so ask him to clarify after class. He ignores you in class. He's very disorganized and gets upset if students don't participate. Majority of grade is dependent on 3 essays.

I took his class in the summer. Although he seemed really hard at the beginning, he was easy at the end. As long as you work hard, you should be fine. I learned a lot from his notes on my paper. He lets you rewrite, so you can pull your grade up easily. Also, he is not strict on grammar. Take him if you want to improve your writing:)

Mr.Flynn is really a nice person and if you try to follow his instructions, you will get an A finally. Just ask him if you have any questions and he really helps a lot. If you want a improvement on your writing, just pick his class!!

this guy uses politics to teach english, b/c 101C is an argument class. will stretch you to be a better writer, and is ALWAYS willing to help. lets you revise your essays, but is sometimes arbitrary about your second grade, he'll only let you improve so much. he does seem to have favorites, and he will sort of try to force his opinion

Took his class during the summer. You only have to do a few essays, and the essays follow the textbooks. Just read the books, and you'll be good to go. Sometimes a little unclear on what he wants us to do for our assigments, but he is willing to help you after class for as long as you need it. Has some dry humor in him.

Prof. Flynn is one of the most dedicated educators I have ever met. He thought me how top write (then I transfer to UC Berkeley and believe me when I say that it was the things I learned with Flynn what help me to not fail Cal), how to make connections, understand the argument of the author, and make my own argument! Take Flynn if you wanna learn!

If you are someone who really wants to improve reading, writing and thinking skills, then I extremely recommend Flynn because he is extremely helpful and He wants you to succeed. He lets you redo your essay as many time as you want to bring your grade up. You can get A if you work hard and you'll learn to write a lot better along the way.

Prof. Flynn is the best English professor I ever met. I took his 101A and 101C and got both A. I like the way he teaches which he leaves you enough space to think through the topics and group working. He's willing to revise your essays again and again and improve your grade as long as you spend time on writing them. In a word, he worths your time.

Professor Flynn is a very helpful! He is not the type of teacher that will give you an A just for showing up, but if you want a good grade you can definitely get it. What he allows you to do is after you get an essay back you can go back and correct it as many times as you would like to until you get the grade you want. He just wants you to learn!

As an ESL student, it is really hard to take English101B during the SUMMER. But Professor Rick really helps your essay. He told me that he does understand the grammar issue for ESL student. So he will just more focus on my conceptual ideas, but not the grammar. However, u need to really do the reading in order to get a good grade. That's all!!!

Good professor to take if you want a light workload. Really disorganized and doesn't even know what he's assigned half the time. Puts people on the spot a lot. He's a nice guy, though, and I learned a lot from the class. If you're taking his 101C, know that the whole class revolves around politics, which I wasn't expecting when enrolling.

The assignments and grading were pretty straight forward and as long as you gave an honest effort and submit your essay on time you can revise it for a better grade gives good feed back through Skype. I revised 1 essay several times till I got an A. Definitely not easy but plenty of chances for a good grade.

Professor Flynn is one of the best professors I have had. He helps you in every step to succeed. He might look tough in the beginning but if you go to his office hours, you are bound to get an A. He gives great feedback on your essays and allow you to resubmit them as many times you want. In addition, he would also help you out with your UC prompts

Professor Rick is overall a great professor. As long as you show him that you are willing to work and care about his class he will gladly help you. He also gives really helpful feedback for your essays. I would definitely take his class again!

I think that Mr. Flynn deserves more credit. I took his class in the Fall 2019 and he really helped me grow as a writer. You have to be able to communicate with him and show him that you want a better grade. Participation is always important. ALWAYS listen for feedback. Very flexible with due dates.

I was a C writer in high school until I took Mr Flynn's class. Took his class Fall 2019 Got a C on my first essay with consistent A's thereafter You need to write well to get an A in his class. That being said, he shows you how to. TAKE HIS FEEDBACK SERIOUSLY AND REVISE YOUR ESSAYS! He is one of the few gems at Ohlone who rewards a good revision!

Probably one of my favorite professors ever and for English (which I normally dread) Great feedback, works with you if you wanted to learn and improve, and interesting topic on global warming. He really changed how I am more critical when it comes to thinking. Be aware, there is a lot of writing, but it will make you a better writer as you move on.

Professor Flynn was a really great professor! I took his class Fall 2021! There are 2 essays in the class. He gives you plenty of feedback with writing and allows multiple rewrites. I highly recommend him if you can get him! He spends the time to get to know his students and works with you if you can't make a due date for one reason or another.

Professor Flynn is a very understanding professor, will take the time to get to know his students. A lot of the specifics are known through the lectures and his remarks through them, so though attendance is not mandatory it is highly encouraged. Essays are important, and he demands that you review them with him in office hours before submitting.

Wasn't expecting the heavy load for the Summer session, but it's because it was a 6wk course and my first summer course. Doesn't deduct points for late work like other professors, which was a huge plus for me! Gives great feedback on essays. Take his class, you'll definitely become a better writer!

If you take Mr. Flynn, you should expect to dedicate a good amount of time and effort to completing the work assigned. However, it is far from being an unmanageable workload. I had six courses this semester, yet was still able to complete all the work for Mr. Flynn's class on time and end with an easy A. You just need to care about the course.

Not an easy A class, but it's possible to end with an A if you put in the work. Professor Flynn will make you become a stronger writer but grades the beginning essays harder with lots of feedback. He's very understanding with late work, redoing assignments for more credit, and responds to emails fast. Show him you are putting in effort to do well.

In Mr Flynns class, expect a decent load of assignments requiring good effort. The first half of the semester is about AIDS and the first essay is graded the hardest. Gives thoughtful feedback and allows rewrites for better credit. Emails back quick. Overall, great class if you are willing to put the effort in and looking to become a better writer.

Relatively easy class with enjoyable reading material. Since this is an accelerated online course, there's a fair amount of reading and homework assigned, but if you pace yourself and stay on top of the work, it's an easy A. Professor Flynn is very helpful and down-to-earth. After taking his class, I feel like a better, more confident writer.

I took this class during the summer, asynchronous online. This class is graded heavily based on your essays. He offers many opportunities for office hours and feedback. If you ask, he will even give you feedback on your paper before you submit it which is really nice. You can get an A if you put the work in and show up, especially to office hours.

Richard Flynn is really nice professor. If you get low grades he will give you another chance or 2 to improve the grades. He provides good feedback and whenever you need help he is available to teach you. He gives plenty of time to discuss any doubt with him during zoom or google meet class. You can learn a lot of things.

Professor Flynn class is wonderful. He gives clear details of upcoming essays, he is hilarious telling sarcastic humor in class, and he provides clear and easy to follow assignments. He provides many retakes and revisions on your essays. Attendance is mandatory, but he does not deduct points if you're tardy. Overall, I would retake this class again
