He's helpful. His explainations are slows, so you made end up getting out of class 60 mins tops with his speed that's only if you rush through lab like I do. I think the labs can be done faster; but you know, there's a lot of dumb students in the class, so that's a good reason for it. Good teacher!
He is a cool teacher to have. He is very helpful and is willing to go that extra mile for a student that needs help. His grading is kinda strict but he makes up for it with rebound points
He is great professor because if you have a question he will explain it nicely and he is so helpful. He is easygoing and he jokes with his students.
He is a cool guy. He is kinda slow with the lectures which tend to bore some people, but he makes up for it in effort to help the students understand. He will go over the question until you understand what you di wrong. The only thing you should really look out for is his grading.
He is a good professor and will help whenever needed, however is extremely slow and boring to me. You can never leave class or lab early, will have worksheets for you to do instead. Very nice and fun man just boring.
This is a hard class no matter what but he is a nice teacher and if you work hard you get a good grade. I did no do well on the first test but he made the second and third test kind of easy. He also gave a 50 point extra credit. I recommend that you take his course.
this teacher is cool. funny. labs are easy. lectures are intresting. he is kind of slow sometimes. he has alot of things planned out to help you. like, notes, non-required work, labs online.
Hardest class I have ever taken. Everyday is a battle to stay awake
His tests are hard. He puts up a sample test online and when it came down to the rest test its totally the opposite thing. When you need to ask question he looks at you like your stupid. However his lectures are understandable.
This is a hard class due to the amount of material to be covered, but professor Frechen is cool, and has a great sense of humor. He cares so much about his class and students that he is also helpful beyond the call of duty.
A genuinely caring and concerned professor who is patient in explaining and answering questions. He is truly wants his students to do well and understand the concepts behind chemistry and not just take it for granted. I highly recommend this professor. He will put in the time but expects his students too as well.
Mr. Frechen was an awsome Chem teacher. I feared Chemistry prior to taking Mr. Frechen's class and now that its all over he was always there to help me out. Thanks, Mr Frechen! Although I felt he could have offered just a little more extra credit, the class over all was interesting and well taught. His tests are tough but just do the homework.
Professor Frechen is awsome. He is funny and really cares. The class is hard but interesting, and he made the last exam a lot easier. Thanks Professor Frechen!
I wish all professors were like him. Easy going, helpful, generous, and cares about his students. He is really good and clear when explaining his lectures, and his tests are pretty fair. I wished te taught other chem classes.
If you are not good in chemistry and have problems with passing this class, take this teacher because he will make anything he can to make you pass. He is very generous and curves grades. Very good, helpful and caring teacher.
chemistry is always a hard class no matter what. he gives out a lot of homework and tests are pretty hard but just make sure you study chem each day and you'll do fine. nice teacher though.
i took this class hating it and now i hate it even more...who knew that chemistry could be so difficult... i mean im an A student but this class is a bit wierd in that his tests are harder than the material... but if you don't understand the material you shoudl gi to him during his officer hours because he explains it better there... not a easy A
very nice professor, but the exams are so difficult.
If you tell anyone your taking Chemistry, most do the sigh thing and roll their eyes... and I see why... this is a hard subject... I struggled with it, it is like a new language, got too behind and did terrible on the tests, found them hard, although he was fair and helpful, just not my subject and had to drop!
he was a great teacher kept the class as interesting as possible... for chemistry. if your not really all that into the mathematics and equations of chem. take this class no math is needed. basic math is all. not hard. lots of busy work. study for tests and you will get a good grade
not the most interesting of lecturers, but frechen is the most helpful teacher i've had so far. hes super chill and nice, just his lectures are a little monotone. but he is super cool
Take him. always willing to go to the extra mile to help u. Very generous cause he curves the class. His lectures might be a little bit boring, but they are very organized and he's really good at explaining concepts. He is better than other professors. His exams are fair, and if u put effort in this class it is possible to pass it with a good grade
I think you may have the wrong teacher. This guy is extremely difficult, especially in labs. He scrutinizes every detail. Im sure you have the wrong people.
he's a really nice guy. he's willing to help and you can get his powerpoints online for lecture. Lecture can be a bit dry, but he explains the concept pretty well if you pay attention. I thought i was going to get a C in the class, but i got a B. there are quizzes before each exam and i believe there are 5 total
Prof F is way cool. He will go out of his way to help you if you if you go to him. He's a very kind man and wants the students to do well. He gives chances to hard workers. Take him. Dry lecture sometimes, but he makes up for it.
nice guy. it ended up being an easy class. i really thought i did not as well as i thought i could and still got a B! lectures are a little boring, but hey, sometimes its hard to be fun during lecture. extra credit opps and easy writing assgnments!
first, he is a lazy guy. he never tells what you grade have in class, even before finals. his lectures are so boring, hardly stay awake! he is not organized and the lab was horrible. i don't recommend taking him for CHEM 180 course.
very nice, but also very boring in his lecture. easy test if you understand the material (which you have 2 figure out by yourself), kno how 2 do the hw and study the study guide. his lecture does not help. :}. take his lab, its easy. but do not take his lecture, i learn nothing fr his lecture. i had 2 figure everything out myself.
he is the best man ever. very kind and funny professor. If you know a little Chemistry easy A, at least B! there are two take home test which are very easy. Take this class!!
he makes chemistry easier to understand. maybe i'm just trying harder this year, i don't know. he's there during office hours if you need help and occasionally cracks jokes during class. he's pretty lenient for lab...overall, GREAT professor, highly recommended!!
Super nice guy, really into what he teaches. Lectures are pretty boring tho, maybe b/c I don't know much about chem but I found the lectures just confusing me more. Test are take home which helps. Make sure you do the hw else you will loose a lot of points, same with attendance. There's also 3 papers.
Workload: H.w.(around 20questions) due every week, 3midterms(take home) and a final. 3 papers worth 50points each. Overall an okay class, sometimes can be difficult if you don't understand chem well, but he's helpful if you ask questions. Test are pretty hard but they're open book/take home. Hw is not too bad.
REALLY BORING TEACHER. But not a bad class, overall. It's easy, you'll pass, but you probably won't learn any chemistry. If you are going into a scientific field, I'd advise taking a class where you will actually learn. If you're after an easy A, Frechen's your guy. Open-note tests, take home tests, notes online... it's a breeze.
A good way to describe him is 'a goober' His voice will put you asleep, but he trys to make it fun with little expeiriments and examples even tho its a lecture class. Key: PAY ATTENTION and take good notes! also all tests(including finals) are open notes, open book. He's one of the fun ones, you just have to stay awake long enought to see that.
This is one of the worst classes I have ever taken. I have learned absolutely nothing the entire semester. I have been to every lecture and pay attention, but the way he talks, and the way he presents the material does not convey the information in a manner that is in any way comprehensible. If you want to learn, do not take this class.
He's a pretty cool teacher, his monotone voice may bore many but he knows his stuff.
Mr. Frechen is a teacher who knows his subject very well... however, he's a bit monotoned and I found myself counting down the minutes until class was over. Tests & hw are open notes, book, and internet. I only really used my book when there's something I couldn't understand or couldn't find on the internet.
Super boring teacher with a mono tone voice. Class always seemed like forever and he would always keep you in until the last second which made it feel even worse. He was an alright teacher, and learned some good stuff but I already forgot most of it..
For the 180 section Professor Frechen makes the material unnecessarily difficult. He is absent-minded, somewhat lazy and dull in lecture while maintaining unrealistically high expectations of his students. Take advantage of every single extra credit opportunity to make up for the exams and homework you won't finish. Nice guy, though...
do you have an insomnia? i highly recommend this class if you are one of them. his class is fairly easy, and he is very flexible with works. hws contain 25 questions every chapter, four tests-lowest of the first three drops. 3-4 papers. you will hate it because of boredom, but you will love it because of the grade. up to you.
He is an awesome teacher with a good sense of humor. You can ask him any questions and he will take his time to answer. The content of this class was difficult, and extremely fast-paced. You need to spend a lot of time studying. He supplied his students with good notes and did his best to make the class as easy as possible. Very good teacher!
All of the comments below are vague. Myself and many other students use "Rate My Professors" to get inside information about not only the teacher but also the coursework. To the next student that posts a rating on Frenchen, please provide brief/specific info on the coursework(ex. tests, are they based on lecture notes? multiple-choice?,any essays?)
He was cool, all his powerpoints are on his website, so you don't really need the book unless you need extra help at home. His tests are usually fill in the blank and you have to draw and name organic molecules, and do chemical equations, showing all the work. Homework is really long and tedious, but VERY helpful for all the tests, so do it,
Don't hate the professor, hate the class. The class is extremely face paced, lots of material to cover in just 1 semester. The hard part about this guy is his tests were mostly fill-in (but they are straight forward). He's fair and gave plenty of extra credit, mostly because the grade average for his tests were pretty low. Nice guy, knows his stuff!
HW: 1 on every chapter he lectures usually one a week, based on all the notes he provides (which simply is what's on the book)Quiz:most Qs are pulled out fr the hw, fairly ez.Test:based on quiz and hw,ez and worth a lot, curves final.Attendance:very important 5 points/20 for every absent.Paper:dont copy n paste then ur fine, contnt not so important.
It's CHEM,how interesting can it be?He's got a monotone that kills people's attention tho.He drops 1 hw but dont take advantage of it.Always feel free to talk to him @ his office,he's very helpful and usually verifies ur answer when u ask for help for the hw. Sumtimes he gives take home quiz or test, u can also ask him questions.
He is awesome and super helpful. You definitely want to take him for lab. You can ask him anything really. Sometimes forgot that he's a professor. He also makes liquid nitrogen ice cream for his students. TAKE HIM.
He's a pretty cool professor. you can ask him anything during labs and he will help you the best he can. sometimes he's very slow explaining things. at the end of the semester he makes liquid nitrigen ice cream for our class. pretty cool and tasty!
Yes this is a hard and complicated class if you have never taken chem since HS b/c it covers Gen Chem, Ochem, and Biochem. Frechen is not the clearest person at lecture either, you need to do a lot of self teaching or get tutoring at the success center. You are being thrown so much material so you must keep up with the work. Class is curved though
I personally love him, he's very helpful, but the class sucks, so much material, and only 2 exams, there should be 4 to make it easier on the students, his test questions are tricky sometimes. you NEED to study to earn a passing grade. Book not really necessary 'cause his ppt are copied from the book, so Q's can be googled or asked for clarificatio
Class is FAST paced. He does his best to explain things. 2 tests, 10 are fill in, 50 MC questions. There is a lot of material and you need to LEARN it not just memorize. You get used to his voice and let him go off on tangents! Everything builds up from ch 1. So DON'T FALL BEHIND. Use the success center! That's what made me get an A.
This class is fast paced with a lot of content so be prepared to work hard. Frechen is always happy to clarify concepts, but the student success center is also very helpful. The final grades are curved. There are two exams, and on the final we were allowed a half page cheat sheet. tests consist of half MC and half short answer at equal pts.
Chem 110 can be overwhelming because it is a quick look through of general, organic and biochemistry. I didnt have any chemistry background but i got through by studying the lecture notes. Overall, HW's are easy, Quizzes are easy, Labs are easy. The two exams are the heaviest make sure to study for it! Good Luck! Keep Calm :)
Frechen is a lovely fellow; took him for 185L, 220L, and 225L... it's hard to not like the guy! He actually wants you to think and learn! He might appear intimidating, but he's really a nice guy and is easy on the grading (just beware his finals). Also, coax him with some Game of Thrones, Diablo 3, and tech talk-- he loves that kind of stuff!
Prof. Frechen is a helpful and approachable teacher. Lectures can be dry and he can get sidetracked on topics that aren't important for the test sometimes, but he gives you the basics of what you need to know. Class examples are super simple, and nothing like the tests, so focus on the hw problems! HW takes at least 4 hours to complete every week.
Well you will have a hard time failing this class. Lecture is fairly pointless and his exams are pretty difficult, but the class comes with a fairly generous curve. No one received an "A" on exam number one. At first Frechen can come off as unapproachable and harsh, but you'll realize the contrary. He's incredibly smart and there to help.
I seriously don't understand where are those bad reviews come from. He may appears intimidating, yet so far he's my best chem teacher. Lecture can be dry because of his tone. But if you truly listen to him, he says all the good stuff. I would recommend going to lecture and doing his sapling homework, and his worksheet he gave out before each exam.
He is the best lab instructor you can ever have.
He initially comes off as kinda boring and uninterested, but he's actually a very good lab instructor. Gives VERY good feedback and is completely willing to work with students to point them in the right direction. Just make sure you're following all instructions to a T, otherwise you'll get an earfull.
Prof. Frechen is great. I am currently taking him for chem 130 & L. I was really afraid of chem before taking his class, specially the lab since I am an introvert and not really good at working with a group. But I really enjoy his lab, he explains everything clearly. He is friendly & works with every single student until they understand the topic.
He cares for students, so if you have any questions ask him ! He's willing to work with you one on one and check every answers you have on lab to see if you are doing it right and willing to teach you until you get this materials.
He cares a lot for his students. He's a sweet guy. He may seem intimidating at first but he's very approachable. He'll willing to work with you until you get the problem during office hours. Also he curved too, at the end he'll let you know.
GREAT PROF! Lecture is outstanding. But you have to read the textbook!!!. He'll curve at the end.
My favorite teacher, he really cares about his students. Very approachable, if you have questions, ask. He will never make you feel stupid. Tests are hard, but its high level chemistry, so you will have to put in the effort! Do ALL the homework and best you can in lab, and it will help you if you do bad on exams. Go to lectures or else fall behind.
Took him based off his ratings & I feel as though I was gypped. Not one to complain but here's the truth: incredibly slow/easy in lecture but exams are extremely complex & difficult, took him 1 mo. to grade 1st exams, never in office hours, makes you feel dumb at times, he's picky, etc. Made this course more difficult/stressful than it needed to be
Since the lectures are very slow and boring, I highly recommend you to stay ahead of the lectures by reading the textbook! The class materials are very easy, compare to physics and math. The tests are straight forward. However, you need to write quickly because there are 11 questions. (no MC) I took him for 180 and 185. I got A for both class.
No complaints about the labs but I don't recommend for lecture unless you have taken previous chemistry courses and are already familiar with it. His speaks slowly and is hard to pay attention to. I ended up learning the material from online tutors. He is a really tough and picky grader. Does not accept late work. No extra credit opportunities.
Always shows up 10-15 min late to lecture so dont panic if you are a little late to lecture. Lectures are long, slow, & boring. He does not let you out early, he will continue going over his notes even when its time to go. There were 3 exams & a final. His exam werent easy. Hes a VERY picky grader.
worst teacher I have taken at OCC. He is so boring during lectures. Every week we had 100 problems due online along with prelabs every week and worksheets that were exactly what we did online for homework.
super easy teacher. his tests are basically the wileyplus hw (which is super long btw and kinda annoying). his labs were pretty fun & he seems intimidating but it's only if you don't pay attention & slack off. i didn't do hw very often and averaged a B on most tests without studying.
Great professor, just annoying work has to be done both online (hw) and in lecture (worksheets). His class is not difficult at all, but he does expect you to hold your own weight when it comes to studying for exams. Very doable, I would recommend for general chemistry.
Very organized and methodical; laid out the entire course in the syllabus... no surprises. Grade includes lab, hw, 4 exams with some extra credit, some quizzes. Good amount of HW online but helped/doable; gave us a study sheet with every topic on the tests. Really fair & caring. He posted lecture notes late one time, but printed them out for us.
Requires A LOT of memorization. Super picky grader, will take points off for pretty much anything - like spilling salt. He includes stuff on exams/quizzes we weren't supposed to know because he thinks he's clever. The entire lab felt really uncomfortable around him, like we were walking on eggshells. He is borderline verbally abusive at times.
You can tell that he enjoys what he is teaching and that really rubbed off on me. I simply took one Of his classes (chem130) and it made me change my major to chemistry. Make sure to keep up with the weekly online homework and study for the tests. Tests will only hurt you if you solely base your studying off the notes.
overall hes a pretty good professor. can be intimidating @ times but thats only if you dont follow directions. tests are not too difficult but sometimes the FRQs are way different from the notes or HW. he gives A LOT of HW so be prepared. only three tests so make sure to make them count. i had him for lab as well and he walks you through it well
Absolutely terrible teacher. Refuses to do examples in class. On top of that his tests were nothing like the homework or the lecture. He doesn't provide a study guide or any practice for the exams. He was rude to people in lab and made students feel stupid for making mistakes. The average score for the first test was a 52%. DON'T TAKE HIM.
Be prepared to do lots of homework online. Rude and obnoxious. Thinks his way of chemistry is the only way. Very picky with answers. Doesn't show students how he wants work to be formatted on exams. Tells students after the first exam therefore deducting at least 5% of your grade because of "wrong formatting" he didn't mention prior.
Avoid taking his classes at ALL costs! Incredibly rude and obnoxious. Very picky grader and unforgiving. Responds to you in e-mails or in person as if you are stupid and will treat you as such. Will be incredibly passive aggressive in e-mails if he feels you didn't "listen" to him. AVOID. AVOID. AVOID!!!!!!!!
Stay away from this prof at all cost for both lecture and lab. Extremely rude. Does not care about students. Finds every reasons to mark off pts for exams, worksheets, and labs. No extra credit at all. His lecture notes will not help you for hw and exams. They're extremely messy
Professor Frechen is a great instructor. Chemistry is a difficult subject. If you do not spend time with the material outside of class, you can expect to not do well on the exams. Professor Frechen is a good lecturer, gives a fair amount of homework, and is reasonable on exam grading. If you are making an effort, he is friendly and will help you.
He has a monotone voice that will make you completely lose interest in the subject right away. He doesn't answer questions in a timely manner and has spoken to several students in a very rude and condensing way. He need a hobby or to get laid. He's collecting a pay check, he doesn't care about your grades, he's been doing this for too long.
he is AWFUL and not understanding of students home situations at ALL. he has major anger issues, has gone off on students during class, and was never accommodating. i missed a test because my internet went out, but i let him know via email on my phone i couldnt attend the zoom, and now my grade is suffering because he wont let me make it up.
The man is smart but considers teaching his second job. He is very rude and unprofessional in lectures and does not explain material well. If you want to do well in this course expect to do a lot of work on your own!! He is easily angered especially when you ask for clarification on a problem. Avoid at all costs for your grade and mental health.
horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! took him last spring and he expects you to know everything without even teaching it. had him for lecture and lab! wouldve gotten a B in the class but i pass/no passed it geez do not recommend!
He was pretty hard during online lectures, and he didn't really seem to care about his students since he wouldn't give you enough time on the test and almost judges you for asking any questions. He is also super monotone and just not the best professor.
What a total tool. I would describe this prof as rude, inconsiderate, lazy, mean, unhelpful. If you want the most boring, passive-aggressive, and elitist professor at OCC look no further than Professor F.
This professor is absolutely terrible and is obsessed with trying to accuse students of academic dishonesty. Do not take a class from this professor. He will put your college career in jeapordy.
This professor will ruin you for chemistry. If you have to wait a semester and take this class with a different professor. It is not worth it and your chances of failing are great. The tests are incredibly long with not an adequate amount of time to finish them.
Do you want to fail--if so take this class. The amount of time he spends bragging about his ego could easily be used to guarantee every student earns an A. He does not care about the students and snaps at any question a student asks. Pick a different professor and enjoy school. Chemistry is a hard class but this professor makes it impossible.
One of the worst professors at OCC. Completely unprofessional and rude. This man is in the wrong profession and he knows it. The class average has been an F for both tests so far. If you have trouble with Chemistry you will really struggle in this class, do yourself a favor and choose another Chem professor.
This class will make or break you. He's not the greatest lecturer and it's not easy to ask him questions. On top of that, there is tons of coursework, and the tests require you to really know what you're doing because they ask a lot of questions in a short time frame. Be prepared to put in a lot of time outside of class to learn the material.
Frechen is obsessed in catching cheaters so much so, I think it gets to the point where it affects his lecturing performance. There is a lot of hw to complete limiting free time & time for other classes. Can be quick to anger at times. Although he explains well in office hours many students fear going to them because of his attitude during lecture.
This professor is terrible, in nearly every way possible. Workload is insane. Tests are a nightmare if you are not fast. 50% averages are common. "Unapproachable" is being far too kind. I didn't know professors could yell at their students like that. My first time experiencing all of these. We are all thrilled to hear of your retirement, professor.
Professor is so obsessed with trying to catch cheaters he forgets to actually teach the class. Do not take this class, find a different professor or school that will accept the transfer credits. If you take his class you will most likely fail like half of my class did.
Professor Frechen is a smart man but he is condescending and incredibly difficult to learn from. Encourages questions but shuts students down as he answers them. Assigns more coursework then any Professor Ive had for sciences and its completely unrealistic for anyone that takes more then just this class. Major disappointment.
Well who does say chemistry is easy like H2O, I enjoyed and learned so much with Professor Frechen! he means well, and I loved his jokes, it made chemistry bearable! one of the best professor at OCC! I wished he teached CHEM 180 and beyond! As a DSPS student, I learned so much especially stoichiometry! So all the best Professor and Thank you !
If you like chemistry, Frechen is not the professor to take. He is not flexible when it comes to grading and only wants you to solve questions his way or he will consider it cheating. He is OBSESSED with catching cheaters and does not give any sort of feedback on your work. He didn't even mark any of the labs this term. I would not recommend him.
The main tip, go to office hours! In these reviews, he's misunderstood, I was the only student go to office hours. He is very generous to answer questions, caring, and helpful. He's very clear about what he expects for work on tests. Plan out daily work and practice like math. He changed my negative feelings and greatly prepared me for General Chem
Prof. Frechen is a great guy. He has a great heart. He tells you many stories about his life and stuff. I took his Chem 130, 180, 185 with labs. So, I know him so well. He remembers his students by name. Read his notes carefully, and do all of the problems that he does in class on your own. it is not an easy A class. However, I got A's. Take him.
