his lectures are somewhat unorganized and confusing
This guy appears to wing it in every class. Who needs prep when you've got tenure?

Monotone voice is mind numming
He's so great and extremely willing to help students. He's so nice and I loved his class and everyone should take his class
Great teacher and goes above and beyond what a professor is expected to do. I'd recommend any class he teaches, he really cares about his students!
Lectures and reading are sometimes boring, but if you like the subject he's a good prof to learn from
Confusing, boring.
He has a very distinct way of explaining things, but after I got used to it I had no problems. He is extremely helpful and a wonderful professor. I would recommend him, especially if you are already interested in the subject.
Has a very intelligent/slightly-morbid sense of humor. Lectures are interesting if you can concentrate...they can be hard to follow. Going to lecture is essential, which is good - you get your money's worth.
This is a good class if you are interested in the subject, but otherwise it would probably be boring. It will be a lot more enjoyable if you can pick up on his jokes, cause he can be really funny, although he is sometimes hard to follow. It's one of those things that is better with time.
He's one the best professors I've had. will answer your questions and help you understand anything you're confused about during office hours. very funny. take it in the summer if you can it's easier esp. with him. his tests are pretty straightforward too (if you take good notes & pay attention).
Fumerton is a great teacher if you dont sleep in class. He sometimes goes fast but all of the material is clearly covered. Plus, if youre interested and stay awake, you hear some funny stuff.
His lectures were not that exciting, but they were good for learning the material. His study guides for the final and midterm were fabulous. The class was a really large gen ed, so it couldn't get too exciting, but that did make it so easy for anyone willing to actually try at all.
what a terrible class. so boring.
i loved him, his study guides, and how helpful he was druing office hours.
Very unorganized, midterm was really hard I got a 50%=C on curve? Good lecturer, funny, understands people really well. Wish he would prepare slides or some kind of study guide before the class. TONS of info not in books and just given randomly during lecutre - tough to get.
Love him!

I don't really think he means to be, and he seems awfully nice, but he is so incredibly boring. My mind might not be made for Philosophy, but really, I fall asleep everytime in that class, it's painful. He could try to do something to grab more attention, like change the tone of his voice.
he's an ok teacher. the class could be more interesting iff we didn't have to study that stupid book that he wrote/translated. he's a good speaker but i'm not interested in what old philophers have to say about what justice is. i would rather argue my opinion than listen to someone talk about other ppls not even their own. i like the disscusions when they get going be sure to talk a lot in them.
Fumerton is great - his lectures are interesting, he has a sense of humor, he outlines very well what you will need to know for the tests, and gives study guides as well as offers study sessions.
A nice guy, very personable. Always approachable with questions or thoughts after lecture or in office hours, and is very good about review sessions. Has a bad habit of rambling in lecture, though, and as a result sometimes hurries important facts and ideas.
He is an expert on his subject. His lectures can be very entertaining. The class is hard, but he gives you the test questions beforehand. Sometimes he jumps around, but holds review sessions and is very helpful.
Boring...Boring...Boring... everything is so open ended, there's never a right answer... great review sessions, but other than that, if you can stay awake, you deserve at least a B
Really interesting class and if you just come to class you will get a good grade. All the things that were on the midterm were told to us and went over numerous times. Also, class was a pleasure, he made the class so much more interesting. He's a great lecturer and I can't wait to take another class with him.
Rambles at times but easy to follow most of the time. Lack organization at times.
Man, this class was so confusing to us non-graduate students but Fumerton is understanding.

Interesting lectures. Thought provoking material. Fairly amusing.
A great professor--anything he teaches is really worth taking.
He goes off on a lot of tangents, but those tangents are important! If you pay attention in lecture, try to follow his reasoning, and take detailed notes so that you can understand them later, you'll do fine. He is very nice, but the course is kind of boring.
Probably the smartest teacher ive ever had
He's a good professor, he rambles a lot and goes off on tangents that don't make sense at the time, but they're good examples for the exams. Make sure to read the textbook!
Fumerton is hilarious (in a morbid and sometimes subtle way) and very intelligent. I feel like attending lectures and going to the review sessions will get you an A in the class (along with not completely bombing the paper). I've taken 3 classes with him now and plan to take more in my senior year. Highly recommended to take the class w a friend
First philosophy class I took at the university as a freshman, and he made it absolutely amazing! I enjoyed every minute of it!
First phil. class I ever took at the University as a freshman, and I loved it! He made it interesting, and I ate up every minute of class!
Philosophy and the Just Society. Awesome class, awesome professor. Fumerton is a wonderful lecturer! If you have an interest in philosophy, do pursue this course. Some kids were dozing off, saying the course is tough...if you pay attention, do the readings, and attend the review sessions, you'll do fine.
Honestly, best professor I've had so far in college. In my group of friends he's considered a legendary badass. He's the type to show up to lecture in sandals with socks and sweats if that gives you an idea. He's also very helpful - he gives you his home phone so you can call for questions, and goes over every question on the test at reviews.
Fumerton is a great teacher. He's really helpful in review sessions for the tests. He comes to lecture in sweats and a t-shirt. I took this class on a recommendation that he would be a great lecturer and he is. Makes the class really interesting. First philosophy class, and definitely not the last.
The best teacher ever! He is kind and just a wonderful person, makes lectures fun to listen too and even boring topics are turned into something relatable. He gives his phone numbers and takes calls almost any time. Really loves his students!
One of my favorite professors. If you can read a philosophy book and understand it, take the course, it should be an easy A. If you are confused by philosophy, you might not do so well. He has very good explanations and stories. Awesome professor.
Very articulate and passionate about the subject. Go to the review sessions; they help out so much!
SUCH A GREAT PROFESSOR! It is because of Fumerton that I am a Philosophy major. His lectures are great and he clearly explains the material. Often you don't need to read the text to do well in the course because he explains it so well in lecture. Not alot of work for this course either. HIGHLY RECOMMEND DR. FUMERTON!
no need to read the book, just go to class and do the review... the review was the test -- do that and you can't get below a B
He would often go on tangents, and it was hard to pay attention in class. He made up for it in the review sessions though. I could have only gone to those two sessions and never gone to class and I would've still walked out with at least a B.
Go to study sessions and you will do fine in this class, if you skip class, don't do readings, and then skip study session you will obviously fail. If you do two out of those three you should get at least a B. Some lectures are very interesting some are kind of bland depends on person I guess. Overall great professor I would recommend
I took Philosophy & the Just Society thinking it would be a boring gen ed, but Fumerton's passion for philosophy and availability during & outside of office hours changed my mind. You don't need to read the materials if you go to lecture; even the review sessions go over all the exam questions. Overall great course.
Class had only 3 graded assignments: a midterm, a final, and a 5-page paper. Lots of reading, but you can get away not reading everything if you go to lecture. Lectures can end up being long and boring, or short and interesting, depending on the topic. The review sessions are the key to the tests; go to them and you'll likely do well.
Fumerton is old and has tenure and you can tell, and the result is hilarious. He wears sweatclothes everywhere, and demonstrates philosophical concepts with macabre examples in his lectures, which is a constant source of humor in the Philosophy department. Would recommend.
A great epistemologist! The greatest professor/philosopher I've ever met!
Everything Richard says comes from a place of privilege.
He changed my life. I wish I could go back 20 years and take more if his classes. I took a few.
Please don't take a class with him!!
He only assigns white authors!! White. Males. Must. Do. Better.
Prof. Fumerton is a talker, but he literally will hand you an A if you try just a bit. The questions for the midterm and final are given to you in advance. Just answer them and check with your TA if they are right and you will be fine. Do the readings if you want, but SparkNotes works just as well.
Fumerton is a really great lecturer. He uses philosophical texts to introduce ideas and controversies in philosophy, always being fair but interrogative to the topic. He has a free-wheeling and blunt style of speaking that really spices up the lecture, and he really makes you think deeply about why you believe certain things.
SO BORING
Fumerton is a great professor, not sure what other people are talking about. His lectures are hilarious, he uses totally obscure real-life examples to demonstrate philosophical concepts and it is somehow also very effective in teaching. He also puts the exact exam questions on the study guides, so idk how you could really complain about the class
This gentleman is basically a sage. He can tell so many stories and give many clear examples about different kinds of philosophical theories. Always ready to encourage students to think and is available during offices hours. He basically tells you what is on the paper and exams, so be ready for some valuable learning.
I think Fumerton did a good job for someone who doesn't really enjoy philosophy all that much. The review sessions were so helpful and he would stay on for however long just to make sure everyone's questions were answered. You can even call him any time of the day if you have questions.
I really enjoyed taking Political Philosophy with Dr. Fumerton. Class discussions were engaging despite being over Zoom. We discussed our papers in most classes, giving everyone the chance to share their perspectives on the material. The participation grade was based on attendance, but if you had to miss a couple of classes it was no big deal.
A stereotype of an old white male!
Such a dope
Professor Fumerton is a great lecturer. He uses real-world examples and humor in his lectures. He is very accessible outside of class, offering his email and phone number for students to contact him whenever. The only downfall to this class is that there are only three things that are graded. Otherwise, it is enjoyable and not too difficult.
Catty and passive-aggressive.
Fumerton is very knowledgeable and explains concepts clearly. Lecture gets boring bc he spends the entire time on one example. However, if you understand and regurgitate what he says on exams you are fine. The paper had an vague instructions and grading criteria, but he is available to call late if you have questions. Review sessions are v helpful.
This was the most boring class I have ever taken. You must read philosophical readings from 200 years ago and understand what they say. You are graded on 2 exams (graded tough), one paper(graded tough), and participation. There are pop quizzes as well. My TA was terrible. Bad class to take as a gen-ed.
Not the most enjoyable class to take, the lectures tend to get boring. Only graded by a midterm, paper, and final exam. You are graded fairly harshly depending on your TA. If you go to lecture, discussion and review sessions you will get an A or B.
Lectures were pretty bland and hard to listen to. Exams were all essay questions. Professor seems like a good person but the structure and unorthodox grading system that he uses is not great. Does not put any grades in till after the final, only grades a midterm, final, final paper, and discussion attendance. Way too difficult for an intro class.
Vapid.
creepy !!
People with extremely low levels of testosterone have next to no facial hair.
Robert Barnes/Ryan Dawson tier. Doubt he can grow facial hair.
This fragile old white male needs to retire.
Good professor however I would not recommend the class. Lectures were so boring and confusing and my TA graded very harshly. You're only graded on 1 paper a midterm and a final and none of the information makes sense at all.
Richard's a karen.
John Rawls: richard fumerton :: Mick Jagger: Jelly Roll
Anti-abortion deplorable! Women's rights are human rights!!!
Professor Fumerton is a very smart and humorous professor. Lectures can get boring and concepts can be hard to understand, but he's very accommodating with office hours. Only graded on 1 paper, midterm, and final, but he has grading scale that makes it very easy to get a good grade.
High IQ, low Testosterone. Completely vapid.
You could honestly not go to any lectures, read the slides, and attend Prof. Fumerton's (VERY helpful) review sessions before the midterm and the final. The only grading components were the midterm, a paper, and the final, which sounds daunting, but his grading scale made it easy to get a good grade. Lectures were often boring but sometimes funny.
Impotent men like Richard are why America is in decline. I refuse to show him respect.
Jodi Ernst/Nancy Mace/Matt Schlapp style of masculinity.
I found myself in the hothouse
He makes Ron Desantis look like Edward I.
He doesn't have the capacity to have actual insights.
Richard is impotent.

not a bad professor whatsoever, just not super interesting unfortunately. seems like a nice guy. readings kinda sucked but were pretty interesting, just long. paper at the end of the semester seems awful but not that bad
I found this old white male so creepy when I met with him outside of class!
Richard, you aren't 1/10,0000 of John Rawls, who was actually masculine, whose work had actually substance. Richard, do you know why are your eyebrows are so sprase]
He talks about how far right wing he is. He thinks that makes him masculine. It doesn't. The Equivalent of hard blinker low IQ low T James Lindsay, whose proud to show himself spreading his legs in his twitter profile pic. Insignificant, his life meant nothing.
Richard's the sort of submissive dopey guy who could go see a stand up comic and her bit is "I thought I was gonna fart, but then it was more than a fart" and actually like it (he's not just being nice).
omg, i wish i hadn't taken his class. he was so creepy to me i was so creeped out and repulsed..
This class was NOT what I thought it would be. As my first philosophy class, Richard made the topics hard for me to understand. He spent most lectures rambling on about hypotheticals or personal experiences that made it difficult to follow and pay attention. I will say, the study guides (that matched the exam ?s were good). Had to teach myself...
readings were extremely long, roughly 40 pages two sided and a waste of time. entire course grade is based on midterm, paper, and final and you don't get to know your grade until they put it in the grade report bc it's not accessible on ICON. said they were going to "grade easy" and then gave bad grades. avoid this class if you can - waste of time
Richard reminds me of Pete ButtGig.
On a positive note, Richard was always accessible outside of class and made that clear. However, this class made me hate philosophy ngl. Throughout the semester, there are 3 assignments... A final, midterm, and paper with zero guidelines. Also, grades aren't posted on ICON at all.. stressful bc exam is next week & idk what my grade is...
I have no words, this class isn't easy at all
