Fun lecturer! He was clear on what he wanted and his tests were exactly what he said they would be, no surprises. Fair grading.
Best professor I ever had!
Very detailed and informative lectures. Totally clear and organized. Very fair tests.
hard to stay up during class.
He's very sarcastic and tends to make wise remarks. His tests are really difficult. He picks random information to use as essays on tests.
nice professor but course is hard
i hate this class. and the professor has made people cry in class. if you are 5 mins late, he won't let you join class. has a tendency of making people feel stupid. very big smart-ass. he's funny though.
Good teacher, very clear. His tests were easy if you studied a little. He is very funny. Just dont bother buying the $100 book you wont need it.
Be prepared for open-ended tests and a very arrogant teacher. He has his own grading scale, which is much more difficult than the standard university scale. He's also very rude. This introductory class is taught at a high concentration level.
Funny, sarcastic, likeable. I wouldn't take him for a intro level art hist course but he's great for 300 level classes. Yea the grading scale sucks but if you're into art, you'll do fine. Just take good notes. Memorize everything for exams.
worst teacher i have had. grades are based on a 5 point scale do not take this class.
The class is very hard, ecspecially for a 101 class. He tries to scare you the first day. He became one of my favorite professors though, he keeps the class interesting and funny. If you can take the challenge I would suggest taking ART 101 with him!
This class IS difficult, but if you really love art history and you're willing to put in the effort to study you should be fine. Prof. Gantt really knows what he's talking about, and it shows. Don't skip--you'll be way behind. Just take lots of notes and study.
A professor of great perspicacity and ability. He is endlessly intelligent and inspires you to become a better student.
A great class and he's a great professor. It can kick your butt though, so just make sure you have plenty of time to study.

Funniest teacher ever.
Loved his class. Inspired teaching. Expects a lot but makes it worth it.
Great professor, absolutely hilarious, and very interesting, fairly hard class though
I chose ART-101 because 100 was full. I though it wouldnt be that hard. But since I am not and art major, this particular art is not for me. I had to have an GFA (fine arts) class. I "got off on the wrong foot" in the beginning, but the exams are too extensive, and too much and we have class twice a week, each class 1hr,15min long.Fun, but too much
Ha ha! Is this guy still teaching? I took him in 1990 and his was the hardest class I had in 4 years! But I learned stuff about cathedrals I can still dredge up today - thanks, Mr. Gantt! Study hard for this one but you'll make yourself proud.
this professor is the funniest teacher i've ever had, i loved this class and learned so much. make sure to go to class & study for the tests - there are only 4.. but this was the first class i've made 100 in
Gantt is awesome. You WILL be challenged, but just listen to him, take in all that he says, and you will do well as long as you do know the facts in the book. This class is challenging. But you will learn lessons that go beyond the everyday things you think you already know. He is one of the best teachers at UNCG,you won't regret it-he's incredible
Difficult class, but definately worth it. Awesome professor. Would recommend.

Awesome class. This is one of the best classes I've taken, and get much more history out of this art history class, then the history classes there. Then the teacher really knows his stuff and really makes achitecture history an interesting class, that would easily be a boring class. Good class, just make surer to really study for the test.
I hate this class it is so boring all he does is talk and the exams are very hard.
really knowledgeable, awesome to listen to, you should pay attention though, because he moves fast, if you miss anything he will help you will it. Challenging class.
I took this course in 2003, and would take it again under the same professor, if possible. He is very thorough. It was definitely hard and you have to study to pass and I did. I'm a travel and tourism major and will need this art knowledge in the future. Thank you Mr Gantt. :)
He talks the whole time in a somewhat monotone voice. His tests are extremely hard. It is a very challenging class for 100 level.
He is the funniest teacher i have ever had. In the syllabus he stated that the only way we wouldn't have class is if it was the apocalypse or if satan escapes from hell. He keeps the class interesting. All you have to do is pay attention and study atleast 3 days prior to testing. There is alot of info but not hard to remember if you get begin soon.
Gantt is a very nice guy. If you study a few nights before the test you'll be fine if you can just memorize things. There is no attendence policy and he only gives tests so you have no homework. I've learned a lot in his class and Im glad I took it.
Gantt is hilarious. He definately keeps things interesting. It's kinda hard, and I learned that the most important thing is to read and study. Also, if you can, go to SIP sessions-they help.
I didnt fail this class becauseof Gantt, I failed it because I stoped going. The exams are a monster but the SIP sessions(if you are lucky enough to get them)will pretty much get you through.Gantt is really enthusiastic and interesting and he takes the classes very seriously. Youll do well if you go and are good at memorizing a lot of info at once.
He's a great lecturer & has a good sense of humor. If you have an interest in art and have the gift of memorization then you will do well. He makes art history interesting. People had trouble with tests because they either didn't study (enough) or couldn't retain slide information. Have the right amount of effort and you'll be successful. Meet with
This was the most difficult class I have EVER taken in college. Do NOT take Gantt unless you have many hours to study. He is a funny guy, but he takes art way too seriously, you must have interest in this subject. I am a good student and cannot for the life of me pass a test. Do not take him. For an intro level class, it is ridiculous.
Awesome teacher. He is extremely knowledgeable. I was an IAR major, but this was by far, was one of my most favorite classes. The tests were difficult, but I learned so much from him.
Gantt is a tough professor, but he is wonderful. He has a great sense of humor and keeps things interesting. This was my first college art history class and he kicked my butt, but it prepared me for future art history classes.
I dropped b/c as a fine arts, entry-level, gen-ed course 12 hours a week memorizing precise dates that will matter none post-exam was asinine. Being a 4.0 student, investing that much time and genuine effort (which took away from my majors), to make an 84 on his exam did not produce an acceptable energy:result ratio.
This man is so bright and knowledgeable about his subject! His wit and wisdom will carry you through when you think you just can't study any more. Name a building for him!
He is a nice man when you talk to him without the class around. If you ask him a question he will make fun of you. Very rude man. He does know his stuff, and his test are just the way he tells you they will be. Expect to learn thirty or more churches for each test, and don't forget to spell every word right. This is a very hard class.
Richard Gantt is humorous and his lectures are interesting. Be prepared to study REALLY hard though. His class is one of the hardest courses at UNCG, even my counselor said so. I study for many hours prior and get around a C- on each exam.
All of Dr Gantt's classes require one to commit to memory a ton of information. However, the education you receive from this man will be priceless. He always has some anecdote to go along with the artifacts he discusses. Very very smart man
Extremely interesting and smart professor, I recommend having a vested interest in his subjects before chosing him
Mr. Gantt is the greatest--I've been to more than one university and I can tell you he is among the best and most interesting anywhere. Naysayers probably aren't college material.
Gantt is amazing. He really knows his stuff and it is obvious that he loves the subject. His tests are very tough but if you go to class regularly, take notes and study hard it will pay off.
This man is my muse! He knows his****! If you find ANY of his classes impossible than you should not be in college. You are supposed to be challenged here. If not here than why are you wasting your parents money?
His grading is very simple and fair.3 Exams throughout the semester that accumulates to your final grade. This class is not impossible, go to every class and pay attention during lectures.Review your notes a few days before an exam and you'll be fine.I thought about dropping the class at first but the gratification at the end was worth it.
Gantt is a no-nonsense kind of instructor. There is no gray area. Come to class, take the notes & pay attention, and you will do well on the assessments. Cut and dry, and that's what I love about the guy. And the fact that he is so catty and very funny!
I love him! he is very funny and really loves what he is teaching. His test are challenging if you dont know the material, but overall they are pretty easy if you study. I recommend him.
This guy is great. His class is challenging but if you come to class, take notes and study, you'll do fine. Coming to class everyday was fine because Gantt has such great commentary about each piece he goes over. He really does know his stuff and he is so funny.
Gantt is very passionate about what he teaches, and teaches it with clarity, comedy, and impressive photos he took himself. Everyone thinks he's hard, but he makes it extremely clear what you need to know for the test, just make sure you come to class. If you have questions, he'll answer them, but don't ask stupid ones because you'll regret it. ;)
No, attendance isn't required, nor is reading the text, but if you signed up for the class, then you're there to learn. R. Gantt "teaches." Attending class enriches the reading and the reading, although many say it's not necessary because Gantt tells you everything you need to know, the reading helped me develop essay dialog. He's a rare jewel.
Really knows his stuff, made every lecture enjoyable, lots of memorization required, and good support and study groups help a lot with this class
He is such a wonderful professor who makes what is considered a "boring" subject highly interesting and relevant. I made 2 straight 100's on his exams, so he isn't hard, depending on if you attend class and read. You learn artist's secrets, fun facts, and a bit about art curating ;) Here art is not a bunch of fact memorization but a fun lesson! :D
Phenomenal.
I apparently missed something. Gantt is an interesting person, but i did not like him as a professor. I felt as though he was just talking rather than teaching. It was impossible to take notes. I was in the class until i began to study for the first test and realized i had acquired nothing. His class was on a 5 point scale instead of 10. No thanks.
For those that stated he "talks" and doesn't teach. Sorry , but if anyone is looking for a professor that lets you mindlessly copy down from a powerpoint presentation then this is not your man. Richard Gantt was my favorite professor at UNCG. He is incredibly informative and out of all my art profs. I learned the most from him.
Overall, this professor is very good - he's extremely knowledgeable and experienced. He doesn't require attendance, but if you skip a lot, your grade will reflect it. He sometimes wastes class time by starting a little late and ending a little early. Also, as an architectural historian he has a tendency to overemphasize architecture.
The best Professor that I have ever had, he is passionate about what he does. You can tell he loves what he teaches, it makes a difference. He teaches like its a story this helped me a lot in that I could remember the information! The slides that he shows you are great quality but mostly from his camera, he has been to these places hes knowledgeabl
Brilliant. That's all I can say.
Love him to death. Best art history teacher ever. He knows his stuff and he loves it.
Gantt is hilarious. Exams can be hard but easy to remember info because he is so funny.
If you enjoy art history and want a challenge; he is the right professor for it. If you take a 300+ level course with him, let's just say that in order to get an A, you have to score a 97 or better. Anything below a 90 is basically a B- or C. Smart man but can be very sarcastic. The kind where people hate. Don't be late or else don't come.
Okay, so I've had Gantt for several classes. I love this man. He's challenging, passionate, knowledgeable, and very witty. He's charming. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, I'd still show up just for him. Exams are very hard, so study well. He's thorough, but won't really help you much due to scarce office hours and no email.
From the first art history anecdote onwards, I loved this class. Professor Gantt brings art history alive. He says he knows all the dark alleyways and dirty secrets of the art world, and I believe him. He is funny and engaging with one of the sharpest wits I have ever seen. Do not take this class, though, if you are a slacker.
His test are hard but it's interesting. I agree, it's hard to take notes in his class because the way he talks nothing seems to jump out as important. Note, if it's in the reading and he says it, write it down. Quite a sarcastic teacher too that leads to a few laughs.
I wouldn't recommend him to anyone, at all. His exams are SUPER HARD and they make up 100% of the class grade. I studied countless hours and barely passed. His exams are multiple choice, but not like the usual multiple choice questions. In this, you have to guess which choices are right and which are not. If you miss one, you lose all points.
If you are not an art major, DO NOT take a class with him. 3 exams make up your entire grade. I took it to satisfy my art requirement but find something easier. I studied countless hours, went to review every day and barely made a B+. Nice guy, but do not take his class.
Professor Gantt's lectures are extremely engaging. His class isn't a breeze, but you really learn the material. He doesn't take attendance but it's important that you go if you want to do well in his class. He is bright, witty and very knowledgeable. I'd love to take as many of his classes as I can, I enjoyed him so much!
Mr. Gantt is a wonderful instructor and makes the subject extremely interesting. He gives alot of background that you won't find in the books. I have taken pretty much every class he has taught :)
Your grade is the outcome of three tests, which is a blessing and a curse. I somehow scored 80% on all three, with a moderatehigh amount of studying. He's an amazing professor though, would take another class from him in an instant. He's funny and very knowledgeable. As a non-art major, he got me very interested in the subject.
He loves his presentations. Lots of pictures, a lot of notes, just a usual history class.
Definitely one of the most impressively knowledgeable professors at UNCG. I hated art history prior to this course. Gantt makes art history interesting and he entertaining with his lectures. I can't wait to have him next semester!
Wouldn't recommend unless you're really interested in the subject. You have to read basically the entire textbook and pay attention in class if you want to pass the tests, and even then it's iffy. He makes them extremely difficult, if you don' t know everything about the subject, you won't do well. You'll learn a lot, but you really have to work.
3 exams. I find that the exams are a little unfair. There are the normal True/False questions and multiple choice questions, that's naturally expected. But, the the exams are mostly the questions with a question. Imagine 3 to 6 T/F questions in one multi choice question. Get one T/F wrong then you get the whole question wrong.
Very frustrating class. Your entire grade is based off of 3 tests with 30 questions each. The tests are extremely tough and confusing; you really have to know the information like the back of your hand. Going to class and doing the reading is essential to passing this class. Plus, Gantt's lectures are terrible - take this course with someone else.
He is one of the most knowledgeable instructors I've had. His lectures are long, but he knows his subject matter so well, you'd swear he had lived through those time periods. He's been all over Europe and has personally seen many of the works he discusses. Only down side is, your whole grade depends upon the result of 3 tests! Study hard!
Attendance is a must and I learned that the hard way. Your whole grade depends on three exams and you HAVE to know the information backwards and forwards. I would recommend getting the textbook in hard copy form instead of online so that you can highlight and write in it. The SIP leader for this class was the only way I passed.
Mr. Gantt's lectures are about as dry as his humor. A typical day in his class consists of copying an overview worksheet and going through 50 images in one sitting. His tests are extremely difficult and are the only grades that make up his class. If you are not an art major avoid this class at all costs.
There is no homework and attendance isn't mandatory, but I found that going to class was A LOT more beneficial than skipping it (I did my fair share of it). He gives a 'study guide' for each chapter in his lectures. His lectures aren't all that bad, he tries to add some humor into them. The only thing I didn't like were how detailed the tests were.
you can't really focus in his class, he will automatically be the background voice of you playing on your phone or sleeping. tests are so hard and if you miss on fact in the answer, you will loose the grade.
Listen up! If you have the chance to take Professor Gantt then TAKE HIM! By far the best lecturer I've ever had. Very clear, intelligent, and humorous. I have an early class with Gantt and even if I pull an all-nighter the night before, Gantt manages to keep my interest throughout the entire lecture. Ignore the other comments about him being bad!
He's tough but my favorite teacher.
