Get to read a lot and discuss, which is cool. Nice guy.
Funny guy
good old stoner hippie guy. read, always go to class, and take notes
His class is NOT hard at all, three papers and a few tests. VERY NICE
nice dude, lots of reading, take notes, good class
read and speak up in class, you'll do great.
Such a cool and funny teacher. He makes class interesting, though he gets off topic sometimes. Don't get into an argument with him about the war though, he'll tear you up! :)
It's quite simple, take notes on important points, study a little get As on tests. A great guy also.
Interesting guy, always has a lot to say.
awesome guy. 3 tests, 2 papers thats it. the test questions are straight from class discussions so just go to class and youll do fine
really nice guy! 3 tests two papers... must read and take notes!!! if u do ull do fine!
this guy is so great! he's really helpful on papers, will give you great comments to go from. tests aren't hard if you take notes and study them. you gotta love him!
Incredibly biased and not accepting of other views. PLays favorites in class. Grades based on how he likes your answer. If you have a different opinion from him, your opinion is wrong. Tsts are a regurgitation of his opinion
Very entertaining lectures. Participate and you'll stay awake and get to know him. Grades papers pretty hard but the tests are cake if you come to class.
Richard is the man! He's very entertaining, and facilitates excellent discussions. Ask him anything you want about the Balkan region - he knows the answer. I'd take any class he taught.
VERY biased. God help you if you don't agree with him politically. Uses the class as his soap-box. I learned more in high school than I have from him.
AAAAHHHH!!!!!! If your opinion is not his it is wrong. Make sure your views are his or atleast him think those are your views.
He is extremely biased, and his opinion the only RIGHT opinion, so be prepared to regurgitate everything he says in class onto your test papers. Take notes on everything and go to class! He is funny, but a hard grader on papers.
This guy is cool. ****If you are conservative or very opinionated do not take him. He is very liberal and opinionated and really doesnt care if it bothers you....at all**** Really funny, laid back, I think its funny when he rips on people, but thats me
He sometimes forgets that he teaches an English class and not a political science class. Very liberal. As long as you go to class you'll do fine. Take notes on his opinions of the works that are read, and the tests will not be a problem.
He talks about sex ALL THE TIME! Hmmm... class was interesting at first, he has strong opions for sure. If you show up to class and make an effort, you should be ok. Tests are weird and he grades pretty strictly, but gives students a chance to do well.
He is a very good teacher, very laid back. He does grade papers hard, but is willing to look over them before you turn them in and give helpful comments. His tests are easy if you come to class and take notes. Wonderful class, I enjoyed it very much.
He's hilarious and makes the class fun. If you always go to class you'll prob. do ok on the tests. He has incredibly rude remarks and makes you feel stupid about term papers.
This is the best literature class to take. You don't even have to read. Just go to class and take notes on what he says. Tests reward people that go to class. Plus Richard is awesome!!!!!!
So yeah, he's politically opinionated. Just steer clear of that subject and you'll be fine. He's really funny, very nice. Tests are all on class notes and discussion-- easy! Term papers: make sure you're gramatically correct. I highly recommend him!!
AMAZING! Best English class I've ever taken. Tests are straight from class notes and are very easy, you won't want to skip this class!
Horrible class!! So not worth the effort of reading tons and tons of novels. He rips apart papers and even tells students how bad they are. He says that he has to throw them against the wall to get his anger out casuse we are such bad students.
Easy class. Tests are straight from your notes. He's extremely liberal/politically opinionated. I don't know why he's teaching in the US - he should go teach in Europe where he thinks they have it all together. He's a VERY hard grader on papers though.
Balkan Literature...Definately knows his stuff and is excited to talk about it. Lectures are pretty interesting. Lots of reading...some really random. The class expanded my horizons.
He is hilarious. His class can get a little boring as he tends to lecture for a long time. Lots of fun stories though. He's extremely opinionated!
He's kinda crazy, but in a good way.
GREAT Prof. Class is VERY easy, but dont let it fool you, he is a tough grader, but not too hard. First paper he lets you edit for higher grade. 3 papers total. Assigned readings, which are fun and interesting. Good class, good teacher... if you try, you shouldnt get lower than a B-
2 exams and a 6-8pg term paper, tonnns of reading, but fairly easy tests if you actually read and pay attention to the quotes and stuff he points out, takes attendance, class can be a bore... tests reward those that read and come to class
Dr. Gaughran is awesome! He has interesting class discussions and he picks out some excellent pieces of literature to read. However, he grades papers VERY hard and the exams are in depth questions on the reading. Be sure to defend your arguments. Did I mention he's an ex-hippie? Gaughran rocks!
Loved this class, a novel a week was a little tough but the class discussions helped a lot even if you didn't read the whole thing. take notes, they will help you on the 2 exams! one was open book, one was take-home, both were easy if you read or if you are creative. very helpful and openminded!
Hysterical man with some great stories. Tough, but fair grader. Take the class if you can handle a LOT of reading: a novel a week! Laid back discussions, brilliant guy (seems to know something about everything), great class.
Very nice and chill guy! Lots of reading, but the books aren't that bad. I honestly didn't read all of them, but if you go to class and pay attention/take notes on his discussions, you will be fine in this class. One final paper 5-7 pages, two tests. Takes attendance daily, but loved the class :-)

Very funny guy. Very easy to talk to but can be a tough grader when it comes to papers. However, he's always willing to help.
most unfriendly unwilling to help man ever. will give failing grades and write cynical comments, no positive things to fix for next time. laughs at students comments, hates you if you dont agree with him. most stuck up heastrong person ever. dont teach if you hate people and dont want to help them improve.
This guy is one of a kind. According to Prof G, if you don't agree with every point of view he has, you obviously are a dumbass. He should NOT be teaching an American Studies class, he should stick to english. Quite possibly the most cynical man I have ever met and most insulting commentor of a paper I have ever seen. Avoid at all costs.
There are defintely better professors for GAMST out there! He is incredibly cynical, and I dont think he knows what CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is at all! Don't try and disagree with him, he will make you feel completly inadequate. The course itself doesnt require a great deal of work, but watch out for the papers, he will****you on them!

Gaughran's great. May be "cynical" and a "tough grader," but face it, kids: nobody's gonna cut you as much slack in the real world if you're gonna be writing as part of your job. Consider his criticism to be prepatory. He is fair and gives chances to improve your papers and grade.
Professor G is amazing! I don't see how anyone could not like this man. He is hilarious, laid back, very fair. The reading is not bad AT ALL. He makes you think and likes to get everyone involved. He has his opinion, and he lets you are yours. He rambles sometimes, but it's funny ass hell. He looks like THE DUDE from The Big Lebowski, too!
Liberal hippie **** and I love it. The reading isn't bad, the tests are extremely fair, and there are only 2 papers - GREAT for a lit class. Gaughran is freaking hilarious and makes it interesting. TAKE HIM!
Lots of reading, easy tests (3 of them), if you read, you will do well on them. 2 short papers (3-5) pages but he grades them pretty hard, make sure to work hard on them. He tends to tell you what he thinks the reading is about instead of allowing you to deduce a meaning. Liberal and anti-religion at times, but very funny. He makes class enjoyable.
another GREAT gened. Very interesting books, and lots to talk about from each. The classes are very interactive; he doesn't really care about grades, is laid back, and just wants your brain to be working! He tells great stories, and is a genuinely awesome guy. Has his political opinions, BUT is truly open to anything, as long as you can support it.
not sure what everyone is talking about here... he is definitely a nice guy and very funny BUT his grading is out of control. if you are AT ALL interested in your GPA DO NOT TAKE HIM! he changed his tactics this past semester, as he received criticism from the dept for being "too easy".
This is a great GenEd to take. Professor Gaughran is hilarious and the readings aren't bad at all. Do the readings though, because there are reading quizzes, but not hard at all. Tests aren't bad if you do the readings and attend class. He grades the term paper hard, so work extra hard on it! Overall great class and I would recommend it to everyone
Cool guy. One term paper(which he grades hard), 10 quizzes (make sure you read!), and 3 test( listen in class, and take notes). Dr. Gaughran has a really hard grading policy, but if you show up at his office hours and show that you are concerned, you should be fine Come to class everyday too, he values attendance.
If you have the oppurutnity to take his class and you don't then you are really missing out. He is an amazing professor, from readings to talks about life he is one extraordinary individual. Class is worht taking!
Professor Gaughran is hilarious. He gives a paper which he grades hard, but he will tell you how to fix it if you ask. He doesn't just tell you to fix something and let you drown trying to figure it out. A lot of reading, reading quizzes, and 3 exams. Go to class, take notes, read, and study, and you should be fine. Great class. Take it if you can.
In my own candid opinion, this man is the most closed minded hippie, you'll ever meet. I found his class to be incredibly easy, but his opinions abrasive. That is, if you disagree with him, you're deemed an "idiot". I suggest taking the class if you have minimal interest in Literature and are merely looking for a good grade.
Here is the deal, I hate English and Gaughran makes it somewhat bearable. There are 2 tests, 2 papers, and random quizzes. His tests aren't that bad as long as you take really good notes(I think i've read 2 times). The papers he grades really harshly, but not worth as much as the tests. Definitely could make the class more difficult... take him
gaughran is a tough teacher. Im not an english major and im struggling in the class. I go to class take the notes and get 60s on the exam. His reasoning behing my grades was because "I didnt connect with the literature".... Basically he would rather be doing anything else than teaching a bunch of kids who need gened credit.
He doesn't care and doesn't help you at all he doesn't believe in grades even though he gives them I tried really hard he is not a gen ed teacher and I would avoid him at all cost you have random quizzes and a paper which he grades insanely and his test are like Gkin test if you don't write what he wants you fail and he doesn't write comments.
I had him for a Gen Ed and let me just say that he sucks! Avoid him, although the class is relatively easy if you do not agree with what he says you are wrong. One paper that he grades extremeley hard and three tests. If you do get stuck with him, go to every class because that is where all of the test questions are from.
Really funny and openminded...you'll do fine if you can write decently. 3 tests, 1 paper, reading quizzes. His tests come straight from lecture so you prob want to be there even though it's not mandatory. Overall a really great lit prof.
He seems like a nice guy but he isnt' concerned if you do well; it's just not on his priority list (which, if it's graded you'll get back in two weeks). Gives several arbitrary quizzes but says he doesn't believe in grades(?) 3 pretty easy tests, the paper you are on your own for (idea, method, how he likes things written).
Only 3 tests and 2 short essays. Grades pretty leniently and makes class interesting. I would recommend
Literally the worst teacher i've ever had. Very unprofessional, doesn't stick to readings. Talks inappropriately many times every class. His tests are extremely hard and even though you back up every point you make, you are still wrong. Hes also extremely boring and I doubt he even makes lesson plans. If you take this class you will hate yourself.
Enjoyed the class. He's a tough grader. I pride myself in my ability to write a good essay. He tore it up. His weekly quizzes are hard unless you read all the assigned text...and studied it. (Ain't nobody got time for that!)
For a class meant to introduce us to the English major, it did exactly that. He covered most of the various genres of literature (prose, poetry, drama, etc.) and did so interestingly. He's harsh with grammar flaws so don't use any "to be" verbs in your essays! Or passive voice! Or "vague this"s! But he grades fairly - you do have to try, though.
For those like me who aren't interested in English, it's a pretty boring class, but the guy knows his stuff. Keep up with the readings. There are only 5 grades (2 essays and 3 tests) and they all heavily rely on the context AND class discussions on the readings. Not an easy A but if you try hard, you can pull it off
This class is terrible. The whole class is listening to him talk about what we read and he's not even clear on any of the points. Someone else grades the in class essays and exams, and he grades stupidly hard. Don't take this class, unless you want a boring, hard GenEd that'll lower your GPA.
Most boring class I've ever taken. Just listened to him ramble on about the readings (which I never read). Having said that, I missed class 1-2 times out of 3 classes per week and still got a B in the class without touching the book.
Worst professor I've encountered and I'm a sophomore. VERY unclear, rambles about nothing, seems to not care unless you are an English major. Grade on midterm, final, and three papers (that are graded HARSHLY). Avoid like the plague.
I'm not sure what all the upset is about...if you read the readings before class and listen in lecture, Gaughran does a really good job preparing you for the tests. Make sure in essays you are organized and use the prompts/readings to back up your points. I thought this class was enlightening, funny, and interesting.
His lectures are boring and then his tests are impossible. He rambles on and then expects you to remember every detail for his test. Good luck if you take him. I would not recommend him to anyone.
I would not recommend Gaughran, his lectures are kind of rambly and hard to follow, sometimes going on tangents. You write essays which are graded by someone else, and take multiple choice tests that are very difficult. As someone who is usually good at English, the material is interesting but lectures are dry and tests hard.
Gaughran was a great professor and really knows his stuff. He made lectures funny and insightful, but his tests are very difficult. Most of the questions come from what he says in lecture so take good notes! There's a midterm, final, and three in class essays (graded fairly harsh). Not too tough, but be prepared to work hard in this gen Ed.
2 exams and 3 in class essays. Grades the essays fairly easily, tests are impossible. I would try and take someone else for this gened. Oh and if you don't go to class you will fail.
I had him for American Lit II. His class was fascinating and he was very passionate about his subject. Class is very doable as long as you show up, pay attention and read the material. The two tests are honestly not that hard if you read what was assigned. He grades the three essays fairly as well. He is very personable and nice. Take his class.
Gaughran's the man. His film courses are a great mix of the classroom text (which he uses enough to warrant buying, but doesn't smother you with), his own educated opinions, and your opinions straight out of your papers. Also with long gray hair, a chill demeanor, and an identical voice, he is a living incarnation of The Dude from The Big Lebowski.
Midterm, Final, and two in-class essays. Very difficult. Avoid at all costs if you are not an english major. Not an easy Gen Ed. Super nice guy though!
Don't take him unless you're an English major. His film courses were a joke. He doesn't know anything about film itself and teaches it like an English class. I have never done poorly on a paper (especially on film) until this class. He is an insanely tough grader and doesn't grade on content but grammar. Doesn't accept anyone's ideas but his own
Out of my class of 200 people, the average grade on the midterm was a 60%. Office hours and study sessions don't help. Tests are ridiculously hard and are on some things not even covered in class. You need to know every little detail of the passage if you want to do well on the test. He is an awful professor and just rambles. DO NOT take.
Gaughran rambles on about things and you never know what to write down. 2 essays, 2 multiple choice tests all 25%. No retakes, no extra credit.
Took 221 with him and it was Baseball Literature. Class was so boring, he just stood up there and lectured the whole time, mostly about things that make no sense. Grade is based on two papers and two exams. Papers are fine, graded easily (Graded by William Lawton) but the tests are difficult. Lots of reading as it's an English class but very boring
Professor Gaughran is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. Lectures are sometimes boring, but he let our class out 15 minutes early every time. If you go to class and take notes you'll do fine on the tests. I only looked up summaries of the readings and got a B+. He also curved the grade on our test by 10 points.
Guaghran is very nice, passionate, and made lots of little jokes. His lectures were sometimes a little boring, but he had powerpoints to guide notes. Class always let out 15 min. early, but you definitely need to attend and take notes if you want to do well on the papers and exams. 2 papers, 2 exams, 25% each, incredibly easy if you go to class!!
This reflects more on the nature of the course. Readings were sizable and hard to get through. I would generally recommend this class be avoided since the reading load was dense at best, untenable at worst. If you're a bookworm, you'll scoot by okay. If not, take something else. Lectures were dry and generally not particularly productive.
Very boring class. lectures are extremely dry. We had 2 tests and 2 in class essays and a ton of pop quizzes. Tests were difficult. Work load is extremely heavy, often reading full novels weekly, which was difficult due to other coarse loads. Attendance is not mandatory, but there are many pop quizzes. would not take again.
This class is not difficult if you keep up with the readings and show up for lecture. Pop quizzes are straight from the books, test questions are straight from lecture. If you blow it off - of course you'll get a bad grade, welcome to college. He's an old guy who likes to crack jokes, gets a little rambly sometimes but it's bearable.
ENG 221 is Baseball Literature, which may seem like a joke/easy A(which is why I took it.) Turned out not to be so easy, but that was only because I barely did the readings. There is another guy who does the grading, and they are both nice guys. May or may not have hit a couple doobies back in the day. Take this class for a Gen Ed.
He is a super chill dude. He gives a bunch of pop quizzes but only because nobody ever goes to class. Its a very easy B if you somewhat do the readings before class but a difficult A. Actually an interesting class if you're into baseball, and we usually got out 15 minutes early.
My class was on Novels in Short Fiction. I never did the readings and always read Sparknotes and did fine for a Gen Ed. 2 tests that are curved, so the average is at least a 75 but they aren't hard tests. 2 in class essays that are open note and book which aren't bad. Random pop quizzes on readings are easy even if you read sparknotes
Attendance isn't mandatory, but you should still go to class. There are only two tests. Two in class essays which you can use your textbook and notes for. His lectures are kinda boring, but he goes over the readings and it's helpful for your tests. Really nice guy.
Read spark notes and you'll be fine. I'd def recommend going to class so you dont miss a pop quiz, especially since they are very easy. No one really wants to take the Literature Gen ed, but gaughran is a good choice. Not much work, so its a nice break from say a major class
Hard gen ed. Have to read every single story to do well. Tests were very difficult. Class averages for the 2 tests we had were in the 60s
pop quizzes every once in a while so you have to show up. Only homework is a couple readings for each class which are usually on sparknotes. There are 3 in class essays, a midterm and final, which were kind of difficult. Class was very boring, as he would just analyze the stories so i just used the time to do other homework.
He's a funny and chill guy. You have to do reaction papers for each film and you have two 5-page papers to write that aren't too bad. Don't expect to get grades put in, though. There;'es less than a month left of classes and he still has never put a grade in on Canvas.
Through out the semester we had to read over 9 books. While he is a funny guy and class was easy he only graded us on 3 papers and he grades very hard! I would avoid if possible
Overall this class was enjoyable to take and the books we read were entertaining, but make sure you actually read the books and dont skim them over. Hes a tough grader when it comes to writing! So go by his office if you want him to check your work before you turn it in.
Really boring class, but not his fault. There's 1 or 2 stories to read each class, and not all of them are short. The pop quizzes are randomly given at beginnings of classes, and reading summaries are enough to get a 2 or 3/5. His tests are hard, but he curves so the average will be a C. The 2 essays and style exercise keep your grade up
The class requires a decent amount of reading each day. There are 3 in-class essays which were all not bad and helped my grade. The midterm and the final are difficult and rely heavily on attending lectures and making sure you understand the readings. The exams are usually curved though because the averages tend to be low. Not the easiest gen ed.
Gaughran has been my absolute favorite prof. during my time at JMU. I've taken ENG 381, 382, & 384 and they are all amazing classes. Although he does grade hard for research papers, the feedback he gives is very constructive and he is always offering help. If you are a film lover by any means, take all of his classes. Wish more prof. were like him.
do not take this class if you want an easy A. Professor Gaughran isn't a bad professor and he knows what he's talking about. However, you have to read an excessive amount. There's lot's of pop quizzes, even when you get back from a break. He curves tests but they're very hard.
Attendance is not "mandatory", but a fair amount of your grade is based on pop quizzes. Reading is not "mandatory", but the questions on quizzes and exams require you read with a fine-tooth comb. Dr. Gaughran is not a bad professor, he knows a lot... but for a Gen-Ed class, he asks far too much of his students.
a gem of a human. super chill and gives zero work. all you have to do to pass is listen and take notes during lectures and read the textbook readings he assigns. you do two in-class essays and he gives you the prompts beforehand and lets you bring notes to help. then, you have a midterm and a final and they're just on basic stuff from the readings.
TAKE HIM FOR 248! Two exams, two essays, and pop-quizzes. No homework aside from reading. Quizzes are hard but curved so it's okay. He emphasizes test material so you're prepared if you show up and take notes. The essays are graded harshly but the grade reflects the effort given. His lectures are entertaining and he's passionate! Take this class!!
He's a pretty chill guy. No Canvas page, so go to class to get the assignments. A lot of required readings bc he has class discussions. There's only a few papers and no quizzes or anything else so make it tight.
I really enjoyed this class! There are two exams and two in-class papers, but if you show up to lectures, take good notes, and do the readings, youll do fine. If you struggle with English, Id maybe recommend a different professor just because his tests and papers can be challenging. Overall, I enjoyed his lectures and would recommend him for 248!
Easyy IF you keep up with the readings and lectures which I don't think anyone does. I gave up on reading so I just made sure to look at his powerpoints and tried to find summaries of the books online. Attendance not mandatory. Lectures are kinda boring but bearable. Gets quite rambly especially since this class was about baseball.
Took Prof. Gaughran for baseball literature and it was a good class. It's a lot of reading, but you can honestly get by just on his lectures. The class is 2 essays, a midterm and a final. He isn't a tough grader on the essays and usually curves the exams. Definitely one of the easier english gen-ed classes available.
This was a pretty easy English Gen-ed but be prepared to read. There are only four grades, so make sure you study and read. He curves the exams and grades the essays pretty easily. His lectures are pretty short and boring, but they are manageable.
Dr. G loves baseball and talking about it and you can tell he really cares about the class and the students. We were only graded on two timed essays and a midterm and a final. He curves your grade at the end (I went from a B to an A). Technology isn't his thing (we were all online) but he made an effort to try and he's just an overall good person.
Doesn't give a clear lecture, kind of just rambles on
Don't take this class as a Gen-Ed, it's just about the hardest and most pointless Gen-Ed you could take. He expects his class to know everything about English. Not an enjoyable Gen-Ed.
Difficult gen ed thats not even enjoyable. Midterm mean was below 50 and doesnt think it has to do with his teaching. Only three grades, dont recommend!
This is the hardest gen-Ed class Ive ever taken. The majority of the class failed the first test. The mean for the first test was a 52%. I attended all classes and read all the readings and studied and still failed the test. There arent enough grades in this class and tests are way too hard. Lectures are not helpful.
if you want an easy gen ed do not take this professor. Our class midterm average was a 52%. Theres only 2 essays and 2 exams, a midterm and a final. The exams have an excessive amount of content and the answers are confusing. In some english classes there is interpretations but this professor told us his interpretations are the only answer
gaughran is a sweet guy but in his english class youre only graded by 2 exams and 2 times essays. he strictly only lectures.
I'd say he's overall a solid choice for this gen ed. I wouldn't say it's an easy A though, you really need to be in class and take notes because his exams are largely based on his specific interpretations of literature. Other than that, the papers aren't graded too hard and he's funny which makes the class bearable
Not a fun English class. The tests are solely based on how HE interprets readings and he doesn't lecture in a way that you can take good notes. Essays are graded by someone els ho grades easily. Class average for midterm was a 52% and when he asked for feedback from students he just scolded us. Take someone else.
Honestly the reviews from this semester are by the people who just didnt try in the class. you have to do the readings (which arent very long except for 3) and you have to take notes on what he says as he takes that for his tests. only 2 essays and a midterm and final. its not a hard class if you pay attention. i only read like 2/3 and passed
this was quite possibly the worst class ive ever taken. such a snooze fest. the only correct answers are his interpretations of things. only 4 grades total. class average for the midterm was a 52%. if youre looking for an essay gen ed, or just one that doesnt make you want to gauge your eyeballs out, dont take this one.
Very interesting and laid back class!
I think Dr. Guaghran is one of the coolest dudes I've met. If you like English class, take him. Otherwise, he is a tough grader, but if you learn what he wants then you will be fine. There are only a couple essays which are the only grades in the class. Not a bad class at all though.
