Gerrig is awesome.

Gerrig is awesome! Extremely intelligent and humorous. His book is easy to follow and he uses examples that one can easily relate to. It was a privilege to be in this man's class.
awsome class!!! tests are alright...
gerrig is awesome, brilliant, sarcastic, always on the ball. makes coursework interesting, states obvious material in a different light, plays devil's advocate. definitely take his classes. lots of fun.
He is not a nice person. fullof himself. Not helpful in any way. just dont like him.

Talks way to much about the newest gay shirt he's wearing and then speaks way to fast just to get through the material we need to know for exams. The material is interesting to learn, I just wish we had an easier professor.
personality a bit rude and awkward. not really approachable when seeking help, kinda intimidating. better to go to TAs for help.
Honest. Good sense of humor. Fair.
just remember to look at the difference between his psych courses and honors courses. I agree he's a good lecturer, very fast though, funny, and openly fruity, but the exams are difficult. I enjoyed going to class, but it made no difference. He isnt very approachable outside of class. You get the gist of what he's really like on the day of an exam.
Excellent professor, really knows his field well an is able to communicate it. I highly recommend taking a class with Dr. Gerrig if your idea of a good class is an engaging topic, good coursework, and great lectures. Don't let underachievers scare you away.
A hard class, and I went to him for help. Through his help, I was able to resurrect my grade and pass the class while learning a lot. Like another student said, Great Lectures, Hard Tests but if you have the prerequisites (which I didn't) and the interest in the subject, it is an excellent course
He is a good person but he can not teach, he can not explain. He makes the material harder than it needs to be, he is confusing and he thinks he is smart because of that.
He is somewhat funny, but as far as the class goes, if you think you have room to take chances with your GPA, go ahead and take the class. He is very confusing during lecture mainly because he speaks too fast, his exams are super hard for no reason. I just think there is a fine line between making a class chalenging and confusing. you choose!
lectures seemed more confusing then they needed to be. he is very smart and knows the topic well but could probably benefit from a better lecture outline. you have to put work into the class to do well, but its not impossible. go to lectures for answers to essay questions. good thing is he gives you 6 questions then picks 4 of them for the test.
GPA suicide! His exams are sooo hard and I studied for days. Class average was a C+. Lectures are a bit confusing and the book is even worse! He is a really nice guy though and he will help you whenever you ask. I thought the class would be more interesting but it's just very dry.
Very bright man. I believe the lectures were somewhat entertaining, but he DOES make the lectures harder than necessary. Read the text before class and you will get it. He is kind of catty if you ask what he feels is a question not worthy of his response. The general consesnes of many students is that he loks for reasons to embarass and fail you.
Humor class, was not fun at all. Prof is too full of himself. Yale, and stanford, and phi beta kappa society...as if we're all idiots for coming to SBU. He was surprised in class when someone said, "We're actually laughing today," as if he didn't realize we weren't enjoying his class. At least, I was relieved when I was done with him.
I could not stand going to this guys class. He had these stupid transparencies that he'd switch way to fast for anyone to copy and he was always talking while we were writing. Being a PSY professor while teaching us the PSY of language, he should have know that the dichotomy of listening 2 him and reading/writing dont mesh well.
I dont want to write a long Explination about him. WHATEVER BAD THING THAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT HIM, it is true. He is an @ss. EVERY BAD THING YOU HEAR ABOUT HIM IS TRUE.
erm.... very funny guy... but tests are impossible and the material it really unclear...
He's a fantastic psychology teacher,he really knows his stuff & explains it well. He's also a funny guy & makes lecture interesting. He even offers an extra credit assignment, which, for me,made the difference between a B+ & A-.Unlike other teachers, his final wasn't cumulative,& was the same length as the midterms, which was a great relief.
Great class...he really keeps things interesting. He's very funny, just don't be too sensitive! Class is fun and discussion is great; awesome class overall.
This class is difficult. His lectures are interesting but he speaks way too fast and expects you to listen, write and comprehend simultaneously. He is a tough grader for his essays and the multiple choice is also tricky. Overall I'd suggest taking this course with a different professor because he is not helpful and refuses to answer questions asked
The workload is very fair BUT unless this topic is really in your wheelhouse I would skip it. He can be very funny and you know he is brilliant but this class can kick your rear end. You should be working hard in college anyway but this took the cake for me. Show up for class for random class activity points and do the extra credit paper.
Make sure to follow even the simplest rules during an exam or you WILL get your test taken away. Make sure to do the extra credit essay and attend all lectures for random class activities because they will save your ass in the end. that's the only reason i avoided failing. professor is a nice humorous guy. may be a bit intimidating one on one.
Pretty straightforward and fair professor. He doesn't post lecture slides online, so it's quite important that you attend. Exams are somewhat challenging, so definitely study up.
He is a good professor who is able to make me sick of psycology at my first psycology course. It is not like you cannot get good grade from him. You can always get good grade, if you go to lecture and read his book. I mean he wrote PAL, so it is good to litsen to his lectures.
He is a good professor who is able to make me sick of psycology at my first psycology course. It is not like you cannot get good grade from him. You can always get good grade, if you go to lecture and read his book.
Amazing class! He is very funny and keeps the class interested. If you go to class and prepare the essays for the test, you will do well. Dr. Gerrig is skilled at explaining the concepts in such a way that everyone can understand the material. Yesterday in class he said he wanted the hot tamale on a rating. Here you go, Dr. Gerrig!
He's a tough grader, but it is an upper division class so he expects a lot of you. He's a little weird but his jokes keep you awake. I liked the class even though I'm not doing as well as I expected
The material is not the easiest to grasp but if you go to class and pay attention you'll do well. His lectures are entertaining and he does give you the essay questions that will be on the test. The subject is interesting and he's a nice guy
Initially I liked this class, and found Prof. Gerrig funny despite his somewhat boring lectures. He doesn't care about his students. The class is much harder than expected, the work is straightforward enough, but he is a very tough grader. I don't really recommend this class unless you like jerks for professors.
Entertaining, excellent professor. Although I feel there could be more math in the material, he presents it in a way graspable by all psychology students. He's harder than your average psychology professor, but he makes it VERY possible to perform well (extra credit assignment, 4 random attendance checks, posts exam essays online before exams).
One of the most interesting Psych classes I've taken. Even though attendance is not mandatory, you should go because he makes the material easy to understand and is quite entertaining. Tests and assignments are straightforward. Definitely do the extra credit because it helped tremendously in the end!
Professor Gerrig is interesting. Tough grader him and his TA's could never come up with what would be a correct answer. It really depended on what mood they were in when they graded the exams. For every exam I had to fight for points. I would not recommend taking him. RUN you will be happier for it!
You have to go to class becuase he makes the material easier.
He's a hard grader. You need to go to class and office hours. He's really smart and he can help out out. Attendance is not mandatory but he gives extra credit during class and you need to go in order to follow the material
great professor! He is a very tough grader. He kept things interesting. I would recommend him but STUDY & GO TO CLASS or you will not do well on tests. I didnt do well in his class but i may take another class with him. I may be a glutton for punishment, but I know I could have done better in the previous class i took with him.
Interesting professor. He's a great lecturer. He knows his stuff really well. He responded to emails very quickly and was helpful. I recommend this guy, especially if you're into cognitive psych
Hes one of the best teachers ive had yet. I was looking foward to each class and I like the fact that he doesn't give homework. There are 4 tests though and one final but he drops the lowest test out of the four. The first test was hard because I wasnt expecting the way he worded the questions but after that his tests weren't bad. Take this class!!
A really great professor and person. He tries to keep the lecture as interesting as possible and tried to make sure that there is no confusion with anything he is teaching. He always is available for office hours and is very helpful.
Extremely easy class. Gerrig is full of himself and treats students poorly. Read the older reviews on here, they are correct.
Alright Professor Gerrig is a really interesting person. He keeps you entertained with his corny jokes and stories. It's useful to go to lecture because he says a lot of important information. All in all his class is not that hard to get a good grade. Also has a retty nice curve.
One of the most interesting classes that I've taken. He tries to relate the material to your life and how you can improve yourself as a student. He is very fair.
As a professor, he is good. He's quirky, amusing and definitely tries to make the material interesting. Unfortunately, the class material is dry. It's just experiments and doesn't have much application for real life. I had high expectations for the class unfortunately I wouldn't recommend the class. I am trying to take a class with him next semeste
While he is brilliant, taking this class is one of the worst mistakes you can ever make. While his TAs probably fluctuate every semester, they are the ones grading you - they are harsh and will give you no points. There are 4 tests, 4 in class activities, 2 papers and 1 optional. This is all based on research though - so beware! HARD
I would agree that the essay grading is pretty harsh. However, Gerrig's funny and keeps the class interesting. It is bizarre to me that people are writing that Gerrig's smug. I've never seen him flash his credentials during the class; he has a ton. Any story he tells about his own life applies the material being learned to make it more relatable.
He's a great professor! Just make sure you go to class and read the chapters if you want an A. Loved his class, and learned a lot that applied outside the classroom. :) One of m favorite classes at Stony Brook!
He isn't very clear on some things including what exactly the materials on tests are going to be. He claims that it is a balance between whats in the textbook and the lectures but most of the tests will be from the textbook so reading it is pretty much required to do well in the class.
His tests are incredibly difficult even after reading the textbook and going through lecture notes it's ridiculously difficult to get a good grade. The tests are curved but they barely help going up about a letter grade (from B- to B). The only things I probably do like is he is offering extra credit and he tries to keep the class interesting.
He rushes through lectures sometimes because he put too much info for one lecture. Read the textbook before the class, it'll help on the exams. 3 midterms, 1 final. lowest final gets dropped. the curves are useless.offers extra credit tho. the tests aren't that hard if you pay attention and go to the review sessions.
Professor Gerrig is really funny. If you read the lecture notes and go to the textbook to understand it better, you will pass. I thought the first test was hard, but once you get used to the way he asks questions, its alright. The best part is that NONE of the tests are cumulative and theres NO HOMEWORK.
Richard Gerrig rushes through the lectures, making it pretty difficult to comprehend what he is trying to say. Although there are a few interesting topics, the rest are boring. The only good thing is that sometimes he has lecture activities during class time.
has a very bad nature, actually quite rude
He is extremely rude! Not helpful at all and is very tough with grades. Also the exams are hard.
Gerrig is a really funny guy. He tries to keep class interesting. However, his tests are not easy. The text book is essential for this class. Going to lecture is important because he emphasizes what you need to know for the exam. I learned a lot in this class. He even gave us an extra credit option. Exams are not cumulative.
I was looking forward to this class but it was basically all reading, if you don't read the textbook you'll fail. He's a funny guy but not very likable sometimes, his tests are difficult and are deceiving, exams are not cumulative and each of them are 50 questions.
Great Professor
This class is DIFFICULT if you're not great at memorizing lecture notes. It's almost 6 chapters of notes in 3 weeks per midterm. Really hard, and I'm not sure if Gerrig really cares about his students. He doesn't make the effort to make personal connections.
Do the extra credit assignment - sign up for as many experiments as possible in the beginning! His lectures are directly taken from the book but he does mention things in class and doesn't go as in depth - definitely look into the book! Highly suggest printing his lectures and taking notes alongside during his lecture for anything not there
You think that you are understudying everything in this class, until you sit down and take the test. Test's are way too hard.
He's extremely intelligent, but he does move through the material quickly. Definitely go to class, pay attention, take notes and read the textbook. His lecture notes are online, so print them out before you go to class. The two times I didn't go to class, I was kinda lost. Exams are hard-study a lot. If you put in the effort, you'll do fine.
Anyone who said anything negative about professor Gerrig is a moron. I can tell you that he is one the kindest professors here at Stony Brook once you get to know him, the class isn't a cake walk but if you go to class and just review the lecture with the appropriate text material you'll get an A.
Avoid him. He is really arrogant and makes you hate psychology. Really hard exams, over-whelming lectures. Tries to act all supportive and nice, but honestly he's useless and rude.
Gerrig is funny and approachable. There is a great deal of material to cover in this class, but go to his office hours for help. He is not at all condescending, and really tries to engage students. He's one of my favorites so far.
This course is a bit dry, but was made more interesting by Gerrig's dry sense of humor. I don't think he is a difficult grader if you do the work and don't ask stupid questions. As for the hotness, humor to me is the greatest aphrodisiac, so he gets a pepper from me.
The course wasn't that interesting, but Gerrig is approachable and funny. One of my favorite profs--helped me decide to change my major to Psych.
Gerrig is incomprehensible. Too much material per lecture and he goes way too fast. The multiple choice on his tests are impossible and the essays are hard. The textbook is dreadful and expensive. He is funny and interesting though. Overall not the worst I've experienced but ill be taking my chances elsewhere next time.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD! He is extremely rude, doesn't help you in anyway if you go to him. His tests are also mad tough.
I underestimated this class. The material posted on the slides in class is very vague and difficult to understand if you haven't read the textbook, you must go to every class and take detailed notes. One helpful hint: he picked test questions out of the sections in the book of specific topics that he covered in class. (He also wrote the book)
HEY This is one of the best psychology professors at Stony Brook. His lectures are amazing he is very approachable and will help you beyond belief if you need it. He is understanding and really wants to see everyone do well. I enjoyed his class this semester. I would definitely recommend his class. Go to office hours if you are lost.
Gerrig is probably one of the only psychology professors I had who actually enjoy what they teach where it shows through their teaching. Regardless of a huge lecture, he engages the entire class and makes it interesting. However, his expectations are sometimes confusing and the papers for the class do require effort. Don't take this for an easy A!
Gerrig is awesome, funny, helpful and understanding. Makes you want to go to class but his tests and papers are not easy but they are fair. Best way to succeed is to go to class, take notes and prepare the essays before the test
Best professor at Stony Brook, love him to death, wish i could take more classes with him.
His lectures are very interesting. Although he goes on many tangents, they always relate, and are always helpful. And important thing about this class is to not miss lectures. The notes are online, but he often adds details that aren't there that will be on the test. Or lets you know some details won't be. Tests are all lecture-based.
I am currently taking his class and I love it. He is so inspirational whenever he speaks. He relates what we learn to real life experiences and shows how much psychology is affiliated in our lives. He is also hilarious and I can listen to him for hours. Definitely recommend him! Also, all you need is to listen and study his notes!
Prof. Gerrig is a great professor. He knows what he's talking about when he lectures and he tries to make them interesting but his tests are hard. He give multiple choice and 4 short answer questions but he does give a review sheet for the short answer questions. He gives 3 two-page papers but you only have to do 2. His class is challenging.
Gerrig is one of my favorite professors. This class has 3 midterms, but he drops the lowest one. His tests are only 50 multiple choice each test and the final is non cumulative. Everything he says in the lecture will be on the test, but reading the textbook does help. He's a funny guy and seems to care for this students.
I'm a freshman of SBU and I think Prof Gerrig was SUPER INSPIRATIONAL! He always tried to make students apply psychology concepts to real life. His exams were a little bit tough but all based on lectures. He would give you all the lecture material and lecture notes. Make sure to check EVERY concept on the lecture notes!!!
You are supposed to pay close attention to this guy's lecture take notes in detail and combine it with the reading materials or you will surely be a sucker of it
Really great professor and fun to listen to. His lectures were always interesting and he really tired to make ideas and concepts relateable and understandable for the students. His tests were picky and you definitely need to understand the lecture notes. Dropped the lowest of three midterms and non-cumulative final.
A fun class, the professor's interesting. But you really need to pay attention to his lectures in order to get a good grade, the textbook is less important though. If you reviewed all his lectures, it can be easy to get a good grade on tests.
You have to be in class to do well, but attendance isn't mandatory, so watching the echos is a viable option. Don't even buy the textbook. I spent over 100 dollars on a book I never touched.
I have a lot of respect for Gerrig. I took 365 with him and am finishing up 364 with him now. Probably the best professor in the psychology department. His classes are hard though. Very hard. 365 much more so than 364. You better be confident in your ability to parse through dense reading materials and synthesize the info accurately.
At first I thought he's not so bad of a teacher, he's hilarious and funny during lecture BUT don't let that trick you. He gives 3 midterm drop the lowest and a noncumulative final. The test consist of mc question and 4 writing question. he does give you a review sheet for the writing question but HE IS A REALLY TOUGH GRADER on writing part.
I think professor Gerrig is pretty okay, and I probably would have enjoyed him more if I didnt take Psych364. So much of his lectures are spent discussing psych experiments and its sort of difficult to even really understand what the point is that hes trying to make. Anyway, hes funny and he puts his lectures on echo so thats pretty great!
He's all about the numbers. He is a brutal grader and if you don't say exactly what he says during essay questions you'll fail tests. Very hard class. Very hard test. Do not recommend taking!
Interesting class! The tests are pretty simple, a mix of multiple choice and essays which you get in advance. He grades essays pretty strictly but is willing to help you out in office hours if you aren't sure how to answer them. Professor does get angry if you don't follow his specific instructions, so just do as he says and you're good.
Psych 364 wasn't easy, but if you work hard, you will be fine. Even though the lectures are on Echo, attend every class because you never know when he will do in class activities that will help your grade. For every test (a mix of MC and essays), go to him. He gives the essays to you beforehand. There are two papers. Take advantage of office hours.
HARDEST class but GREATEST professor ever. I learned a lot in this class. His lecture notes are well-organized and precise. His lectures are inspirational. He does care his students and gives good feedback after exams. If you go to his office hour, he is more than willing to help.
Professor is looking to fail you :( unless you have a diligent work ethic DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
He gives no extra credit. His lectures are extremely long. Especially for an online class due to Covid-19. He posts videos that are nearly 20 minutes long, & there are about 10-15 of them for each weekly module. On top of that he has a discussion post due, and a written assignment every week. The exams are so frustratingly confusing. Stay away!!
Worst professor I have ever taken at Stony Brook should lose his job. Saying this as someone who has many professors in their family. Publically calls out and humiliates students over accidental phone rings and claims there cheating. I got near a hundred on all of his exams and because of this one error he gave me a C- should have reported him!!
GARBAGE PROFESSOR!! I don't get why Stony Brook allows him to continue teaching!! Every Psychology professor at Stony is amazing except this guy!! Seriously, why even teach if you clearly don't want to. ABSOLUTE JOKE of a professor should be removed. Saying this as a high gpa pre-med so no the class wasn't hard he just ruins it!! Thanks
I am not sure why his rating is so low. His class was the only one I was actually interested in this semester (and I only really took it for a 300 level credit). His lectures are enjoyable and he does his best to encourage participation. The content is interesting and applicable. I would highly recommend taking Judgement and Decision Making
His lectures are very interesting to listen to but are also disorganized in practice. You would have to dedicate your day to try and figure out what he meant with examples and how it come into play. Also can be rude to students when asking questions and would even interrupt them when asking questions. Would have to sell your soul to pass :/
Worst professor at Stonybrook imo doesnt want to work with u at all especially when you email him privately and also grades harshly do not take this guy unless u want ur gpa to bleed
This Professor was fantastic. I took him for 380 but thats not an option here. We had a couple of small assignments but they were graded on completion. He makes really boring topics interesting and I was never bored in lecture.
(Note: I took him for 380, rather than 369) SUCH an amazing prof. He's super charismatic, his lectures are memorable, and he vibes well with the class/his TAs. The grading system is very reasonable, and the two exams I had were open note. His assignments are replications of experiments ex. a pattern recognition test, and short answer questions
Professor Gerrig is very funny and energetic. The grading is very strict but overall the assignments and labs are straightforward. He often has casual conversations with students during lab breaks, which definitely makes the lectures and labs fun.
Extremely personable, charismatic, and effective teacher. His lectures are example heavy, but the examples show the meaning of certain words of concepts very well and helps to connect the dots to get the "bigger picture" of the lecture. Assignments are very interactive and engaging, with plenty of time to do each.
Professor Gerrig's lectures are engaging and the assignments are interactive. While grading can be strict, using resources like Unstuck study helps make the material more manageable.
He's energetic, intense, and speaks wit NONSTOP passion—at times a bit short-tempered, but his brilliance makes every moment worth it. Very good professor.
Such an amazing class and genuinely my favorite professor I have taken. He really cares about the stuff he teaches and his students.
