Professor Gill is very animated and tells great stories about biology. However, he expects you to know a lot about biology already. The homework assignments are easy but the tests are terrible. They are all free response. I learned nothing about biology in this class, this class should be an optional biology class. There is no textbook
He is a great teacher! He loves his subject and shows interest in his students. He makes everything so interesting! I don't usually enjoy science but I found myself not wanting to miss his classes. What he teaches is very applicable to us today. He doesn't have a textbook but he uses essay books that are so funny. I would recommend him to anyone!
Great teacher and really interesting lectures but the free response tests and the TA grading are terrible. Overall great class and he gives opportunities to bump up your grade
Professor Gill is educated in his field however his class is awful. It is very unstructured and unpredictable. He doesn't care that most of his students do horribly on his exams--which are impossible by the way. There is no text book and the short stories we read instead are pointless. I do not recommend this class to anyone.
I thought he was great, but he has a very different style. He has no text book, which means attendance is a must! His tests are also all free response questions, which are graded subjectively. However, you can make as many office appointments as you want. He will help you with anything. He made science very applicable and he was funny. I loved it.
Dr Gill's Class is a lot of fun, and a nice change from the other teachers at BYU. You have a Nature project experience that, according to him, should take you 40 hours. His tests were impossible, he prided himself on his open answer tests. Not one test has any multiple choice questions!! I recommend taking it from someone else.
He was the most inspiring teacher I ever had!!! He is very fair! It was abit challenging but I learned SOOO much ~ isn't that why we are in college? I am still talking about things I learned in the readings and lectures~! May not be for some ppl but if you apply yourself you will be glad you took this class! He will go out his way to help you!
One of my favorite classes however if you are looking for an easy A this isn't the class to take. Dr. Gill delivers entertaining and interesting lectures and I felt he took a more general approach to biology. You will need to take good notes and show up to class if you want to do well on the exams.
Gill is AMAZING!!!!! He's so passionate and dorky that it keeps me interested. He is very helpful and so are the TA's. It is not a fact-regurgitating MC class. He helps you synthesize information and think more like a scientist. Take HIM! You have to study but its worth it. Doable A!!!
One of my favorite classes, but not the easy A if that's what you're lookin for. Dr. Gill and Dr. Johnson both give really hilariously informative lectures and it keeps the class engaged and wanting to learn. You will need to take good notes and show up to class to do well on tests, but the teacher reviews help a LOT. Take from Johnson & Gill!
Dr. Gill and Dr. Johnson are great teachers. I enjoyed the lectures; however, I left not fully understanding what was taught. They presume you have a pretty good knowledge of Biology beforehand. There tests aren't multiple choice and except to spend hour and a half to two on their tests. Definitely not the teachers for those who don't like BIO.
This guy is hilarious!! He is always smiling whenever he lectures and is really into his subject and wants his students to feel the same way. It was a pretty fun class, they dont have a traditional textbook but just lecture about things they feel are interesting or are important to us today. Tests are a lot of writing but i did fine. Lots of fun!
I wouldn't recommend him for Biology...his lectures are all over the place, and you don't have a textbook to study from. He's not ALL that bad, but I would definitely say to find a different professor.
I love Prof Gill! Not an easy teacher by any means, but he has left an impact on my life that will not be forgotten. His lectures are a blast while also being very interesting. He cares about his students and has a passion for what he teaches. His tests are hard and in his own words, "I love making hard tests!" This is not an easy A class.
So many emotions for this professor..I loved his lectures, he does hands on activities and ties things to the gospel. There is no textbook and his tests cover lots of random things. This makes studying hard and overwhelming. Go to the TAs for help before tests! I feel like I learned a lot and appreciate bio way more now. Overall a good experience.
Prof. Gill is great! He explains concepts well and really wants you to understand. Not a really easy class, but if you do your work and study you can do pretty well. His test curves are awesome and really help. Would recommend!
I had taken biology twice before this class and could never get more than a B- needless to say I was frustrated that I had to take it again. This class was still hard, but Professor Gill is always so willing to help if you go into office hours! I ended up with an A- in the class and I LOVED the class! Take BIO 100 from Gill!
Don't take Bio 100 from Prof Gill, especially at 8 am. It's extremely hard to stay awake. He is very nice and enthusiastic about the subject, but he is not a very good teacher. The test questions don't really relate to what you learned about in lectures. Take Bio 100 from someone else unless you want to do a 30 hour, 5-6 page BIO project.
So I actually am not at BYU right now, but at SUU. I know Bro. Gill because he is in my home family ward. Over my spring break I had a bio assignment I was struggling with & he let me come to his home & he helped explain it better. It really helped & he did a good job of it! He's a very nice man & you can tell he loves what he teaches.
Class was very interesting - he uses videos, stories, real-life examples instead of a textbook lecture. Heavy use of I-Clicker for attendance. Gill and his TA's want to help whenever possible and hold infinite review sessions for everything. Great guy, really loved the class.
Dr. Gill is a great guy and is really willing to help. That being said, because there was no textbook it was really hard to follow his thought process sometimes. Way too much work for a 100 level class. I took this as a GE and to fill up space but ended up spending WAY too much time on all the busy work and the big research paper.
Dr. Gill is a great professor. He is funny and interesting to listen to. The homeworks and the research paper are not hard at all. Just make sure you go to the TAs or Dr. Gill for help. He has lots of office hours and is always willing to help. The tests are hard though. But as long as you go to the review sessions (all of them) you will do fine.
He really helps you apply biology to life. He cares a ton about your ability to use science. The tests are hard, but manageable. Spend a lot of time with his great T.A.'s. This is a hard GE, but worth your time.
Gill was a good teacher but his tests were hard. Almost all the questions were short-answer. There is no textbook so everything on the tests is based on lectures and external readings. Ended up with a good grade in the class, but was frustrated with the class the whole way through.
This is the worst class. I found the class enjoyable, and actually like the topics we discussed. I actually talked about topics outside of class. Grading was awful spent 15+ ours on a paper and got a poor score and felt like it was one of the more well written papers at BYU. You must be a chosen one to do well. (get to know the teacher)
Awesome teacher, he really made biology interesting. You have to actually do the readings to do well, but they were all actually fun and applicable instead of just memorizing a bunch of junk.
It was enjoyable coming to class and I felt like I learned a lot, but I was frustrated with the course during it because of the research papers which were super time-consuming, the tests which were pretty hard, and the readings. I felt like I did not know what was to be expected. I ended up with an A- though so I was pleased with that.
I am not a science person, but Dr. Gill was one of my favorite professors at BYU! He uses lots of videos, hands-on experiments, and guest speakers in his lectures. Dr. Gill loves biology and incorporates the spiritual aspect into almost every lesson. He even personally teaches study sessions before exams.
Gill is AWESOME. I HIGHLY recommend him! I'm not a science person either...and his class was very thought provoking and relative. GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS. You will be well prepared if you do the study guides and go to the review sessions. You will have fun and learn interesting things about life. This guy is just great. DO IT.
Gill is such a nice guy! His tests are extremely hard, but the curve that he gives is really good. Paying attention to EVERYTHING in lecture will be really important because he will test on these things.
Great teacher! I would take him again if I could (and have it count for something). He makes lectures & class time meaningful and concise. He may share stories, but all are relevant to the lesson. I learned concepts that extend far beyond the classroom - if you're interested in that kind of thing. He is super helpful & always willing to help!
Dr. Gill is incredible. I thought I hated science, but he made biology so interesting and accessible. He teaches with a great "big-picture" perspective. Don't worry about your grade--tests can be tough, but he offers plenty of help and some extra credit. His test reviews (the ones he personally conducts, not the TAs) are so helpful!
There was not any Biology used in his class. All we talk about is ethics and conceptualizing things. The tests are all written and opinionated. We have to write an 8 page research paper on the concepts of Biology. He has made me dislike Biology altogether. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
If you have any interest in Biology, take this class! Dr. Gill is hilarious and teaches in a really engaging and interesting way. That being said, if you're just taking BIO 100 to check off a GE, there are easier teachers. Go to review sessions for the tests and you'll be fine. I have done really well in the class, and have loved it.
Professor Gill is funny and engaging, so going to class is very entertaining. A lot of the course is big-picture based, so there isn't a lot of specific biology you need to learn. The material is presented in an interesting way. He tells you what you ought to learn at the beginning of every class, so you know in advance what the test will contain.
Professor Gill has good intentions but his class doesn't have any structure. He doesn't use a textbook so basically he can put whatever he wants on the tests. Don't expect the tests to be like the study guides either. He loves using ridiculous words that are synonyms for easy words like parsimonious. Probably the hardest Bio 100 teacher out there.
Professor Gill's classes were awesome and I looked forward to going to them every day! Every day we would learn a new concept and then move on to the next one. That was my only problem with this class. I felt like we had so many concepts to learn and so I wasn't really able to completely learn any of them. Plus the tests were SUPER hard!!
Prof. Gill is a great math instructor. This was an online course but Gill made it painless. He is very understanding and helpful and there if you need him. I do recommend his class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This class was interesting however, Professor Gill's lectures have absolutely no structure. There is no textbook and the tests are HARD- all written. He also gives ridiculous, long assignments that really didn't help me learn the concepts at all. There are much better bio teachers out there so keep looking.
The good thing is that he is super willing to help and is a very nice and funny guy.Professor Gill's classes don't have much structure. Moves at an extremely fast pace and makes it hard to follow along. Not great at explaining things.
DON"T TAKE THIS CLASS! He doesn't teach biology! I have taken a real biology class at my last school and it was a 100,000,000x better then this. He doesn't have a book or anything to study so you better take good notes in class or else. I just hate that this is supposed to be a biology class and we don't learn any of the traditional biology..
Really funny guy, the homework projects are a little intense but lecture is usually very interesting. He takes a very good approach towards biology for those who aren't majoring in it. I'd love to take another class from him.
Definitely not your average biology class. The material covered is not what I expected. There isn't a book, so you just scribble down as much as you can in class. His lectures move fast and topics aren't thoroughly explained. Integrates religion into class. Review sessions are helpful for tests. Oh, and he hates phones.
Professor was an amazing professor and sparked my interest in Biology. He expects very little, and if you go in to see him, even if it's just once right before a test, you're almost guaranteed a grade boost. He's very helpful and his lectures are great. There's only 6 homework assignments the whole year, so it's not a lot of time outside of class.
The class honestly isn't as hard as everyone is making it out to seem. If you pay attention in class and look at the study guide before the test, you'll do fine. His class is extremely organized and he lets you know exactly what you'll be learning and what you'll be tested on every lecture. He sparked my interest in biology and loved the class.
He team taught this class and honestly the other professor never really gave him the opportunity to teach. However, when he did teach, it was amazing. He was able to make great connections between topics and I learned a lot from him. He likes to sing hymns at the beginning of class which is fun. He's entertaining so his lectures go by quickly.
Prof. Gill is really a great teacher. This class was team taught with a history professor, and Dr. Gill made some great connections between the two disciplines. He definitely is not an easy teacher, but I liked the challenge. His lectures were peculiar and refreshing.
The tests and homework were difficult, but he has review sessions weekly that are a TON of help. Go to those and you'll have no problem. Very nice guy, he rounded up my grade at the end of the semester because I'd put effort in and asked him for lots of help.
Professor Gill is a really fair and nice teacher. His lectures are interesting, and if you pay attention, take good notes, and use the study guides, you'll be fine. Homework aren't hard but can take a while, so don't put them off. Also laptops and phones aren't allowed out in class, in case that's a deal breaker. Overall a great class.
UNIV 291 was one of my favorite classes last semester. Despite stringent exam and essay grading, I loved the lectures and class material. Dr. Gill was great at involving the class in what was being taught. When teaching about DNA, we extracted DNA from strawberries; when we learned about genetics, we did a simple experiment with m&m's. Loved it!
He's a good person, but he wasn't really focused on the class. It seemed as though something was always on his mind. The lectures were confusing and very long. However, he did have some fun object lessons. I would recommend finding someone else.
Professor Gill is a really great teacher. The class is fairly easy if you take notes and pay attention in class, which isn't hard cause his lectures are fun. The homework takes time, but is also fairly interesting. Loved the class!
Professor Gill was one of my favorite teachers. I am not into science but he really helped me understand Biology and he made the classes very interesting. We did many hands-on activities in class and the homework/tests weren't extremely hard. If you pay attention and understand what he is teaching, the homework and tests are fairly easy.
Professor Gill is the best! He makes biology exciting and applicable to his students' lives! Do the homework and go to the reviews before the tests and it is easy to get an A. Overall, I would highly recommend this class, unless you are really into biology and you prefer to be taught with a textbook...
Professor Gill is awesome, he understands that most of his students aren't interested in studying Biology. So he structures the class to give education that would be useful to non Biologists. He is always willing to talk to students and even encourages visits to his office with extra credit. Not textbook, but assigned readings are long, but cool.
I took the Biol-letters class from Dr. Gill. Probably a different experience than taking a straight biology class from him. But I really respect him as a professor and as a person. From my experience, if you take good notes during lecture, you'll be just fine. He really cares about the students and seriously loves biology.
I really enjoyed the Biology-Letters class that Dr. Gill co-taught with Dr. Call through the Honors Program. Dr. Gill managed to make biology accessible and interesting, even to student who weren't particular interested in it. He made himself available after class and gave me great feedback when I asked for it. Really stellar guy and fun teacher.
The worst and hardest class I've taken at BYU. There is no textbook so the curriculum is entirely up to Dr. Gill. The problem is he only glosses over important information in lectures but expects you to know specifics. Assignments are much more complicated than they need to be. You can literally study for days for a test and still not do well.
I learned a lot from Prof Gill. He is a great guy who genuinely cares about his students and their understanding of Biology. There was quite a bit of reading, but as long as you do the reading you should get an A.
He's a good guy and a good teacher. It's nice because you can totally tell he is in love with Biology. I would take from him again!
Dr. Gill was the probably the best professor I've had so far. He really cares about his students. He wants you to understand the material but realizes not everyone is a biologist.. He has a good balance between science and religion and was very reasonable. Only complaint, there weren't clear criteria for grading but if you put work you'll do fine.
The readings are long and the homework is very time consuming. Tests are highly based on understanding content inside and out. Anything taught in class or in the readings will be used on the tests. He does give extra credit that should be taken advantage of! Its a difficult class but it eases up towards the end of the semester.
I loved his bio letters class! Really made such a great effort to keep the units interesting and understandable. The first half of the class was very hard but then it got loads easier. Super funny and caring guy. Very passionate I highly recommend taking a class from him.
I was honestly not the biggest fan of Dr. Gill. He was an amazing person and you could tell he cared a lot about Biology, but he was not very clear about what was expected for tests or assignments. It also didn't help he left for 3 weeks in the middle of the semester to do research and we took a test while he was gone
Some people when they heard that I was taking a class from my dad, thought it was going to easy for me, I had to put in a lot of work though. It's a long class, because first we have the lecture and then we have lab right afterwards . Honestly I didn't study for the tests as well as I should have, but he does have review sessions, so you'll be fine
I don't think I've ever hated a class as much as I've hated ecology from Dr. Gill. It sucks because I was excited for this class. He teaches you how to be an ecologist rather than about ecology in general. His lectures are all over the place and his quizzes are hard. There are no tests but the projects are not well explained. Do not take!!!
Absolutely worst class I have ever taken. This is a basic generals class and has 10x more homework than any of my other advanced classes. It is poorly formatted and I have't heard a word from the professor on any topic. He does not teach or lecture whatsoever, he just finds random assignments online and has you do them. about 15 hours a week worth.
AVOID BIO 100 AT ALL COSTS. I'm sure Prof. Gill is great in normal settings, but the online format is terrible. I'm an engineering major with 17.0 credit hours, and I HAVE MORE HW IN THIS CLASS THAN ALL OTHERS COMBINED. It's not hard, but it's so repetitive. He never lectures but occasionally sends a "you can do it" video. You've been warned.
I did not learn a single thing from this class. Definitely do not recommend. Lectures, textbook, and quizzes do not line up information-wise. Unnecessarily difficult class, took way too much time to complete assignments. Tons of readings. Several large assignments.
Worst class I have ever taken, definitely do not recommend this course. There was so much homework, so many papers, and the instructions were not clear at all. Furthermore, there was little to none human interaction. All the work was done by the TAs. Simply awful.
I took BIO 350 online from Dr. Gill during the pandemic. This class is a lot of work, but it is possible to get ahead if you stay on top of things (lectures, quizzes, readings). For us, the final was a group project that was 30 percent of our final grade. Be sure to find a good group so that the final project isn't stressful, and you will be fine.
Great guy and his honors class was fairly easy. The class has a big group project for the last half of the semester which became a little laborious. Many of his assignments are pretty ambiguous, but if you are good at reading between the lines and inferring things, then you'll do fine. He doesn't love taking questions or comments during lectures.
Get ready to grind on the weekly (open note) quizzes. He didn't give any tests this semester. The final project was a group project, which I didn't like, but it wasn't graded very harshly. Getting an A in this class isn't hard but will take some work.
He seemed like a nice guy, but thats about the only good thing I have to say. So much of the class was busywork and I felt like I didnt learn a single thing. The lectures and quizzes didnt really like up, and the quizzes are a big part of your grade. Not the hardest class in the world, but definitely the biggest waste of time.
He puts a lot of effort into the videos which was refreshing, but the class was super heavy, tons of reading, lots of very long papers with super vague instructions and expectations that took the place of midterms. Weekly quizzes were also very difficult. The final project is a beast, and nobody, including the TAs seems to know whats going on.
Class is SO disorganized. All the due dates are based on 2020, the TA's don't know what exactly the teacher wants. I find myself stuck because I don't know that the teacher expects. No tests. Weekly quizzes are tough and pointless. 3 projects that you work on, but he doesn't teach you how to do any of it. Overall frustrated with structure of class.
By far the most disorganized class I have ever taken, and I am a senior. Long readings and very little direction on how to carry out certain tasks for projects. Most of the class was always confused, which at least made grading more lenient. Not hard to get a good grade, but very frustrating trying to figure out how everything works. Good luck
This class was not even really taught by Professor Gill, it was usually guest speakers and the TAs. This was his first semester teaching honors 120 but it was a little disorganized and harder than I expected. There were essays every other week and long readings with reading quizzes before every class. But he is super friendly and nice!
Professor Gill is fantastic. Super great orator, really cares about students and is so passionate about his work. The class itself was tough, lots of essays, some readings that got posted the day before they were due, but Dr. Gill himself is amazing.
The class was pretty much all essays based on lectures. Because of the class size, you almost never talked to him and only met with your TA. Towards the end of the semester, it felt like the quizzes were meant to be hard rather than see if we knew the info. It felt unnecessarily difficult for a prerequisite class.
The class was interesting but expectations for assignments were difficult to understand and even the TA's didn't know what was happening. Also, 50% of the grade happened in the last couple of weeks of the semester, which made things stressful. Dr. Gill cares about learning, which was inspiring, he just needed better planning and organization!
Dr. Gill was pretty strict and seemed aloof, like he didn't care about the Honors 120 students very much. He left most of the discussion and constructive feedback to the TAs. He was way more interested in his biology work than teaching a class based on interdisciplinary thinking.
I did some research credits with Dr. Gill and I finished feeling forgotten and unimportant. Our interactions were very surface-level and I felt unprioritized and like it didn't matter if I was in his research lab or not. I've had way more professors who have made it clear that they wanted to mentor me and invest in me, but Dr. Gill was not that.
When I took HONRS120, it was Dr. Gill's first time teaching the course, so he was a lot more enthusiastic about the program. I really liked how he talked about disciple-scholarship and tying the gospel into education. He didn't interact much with the students and definitely relied heavily on the TAs, but his lectures were entertaining.
