ahhhhh! run the other way!
The best teacher I ever had!
Very concise, explicit, and knowledgeable. Expect to work though.
One of the best clases I've ever taken. Scientific approach to psychology.
told me to change my major because I was failing the class. Also told me that I would only fail psychology again if I re-took it with another professor.
This class is hard. There were only three 50pt tests. The tests are very specific. It takes alot of hard work to get an A or even a B. You almost have to memorize the book and his notes. Good teacher but makes this introductory class harder then it should.

Very hard tests, the other teachers are a lot easier...runnnnn!

this class is hard!!! the other professors for PSY2012, i hear, are sooo much easier. i studied more for this class than i had ever studied for anything in my life and i only got a C. don't take this class with this professor!!
WARNING!!!! do not ever take Greegs, unless you are ready to fail (67% of the class did this past semester) he makes this class harder than it really is. His notes are not helfull at all for exams. Not helpfull answering questions either.
He is out to prove a point that intro to psych isn't an easy course.
After the first test he reminded the class EVERY SINGLE DAY when the drop date was and encouraged students to drop. Absolute jerk. Doesn't care about the students at all.
I am a 4.0 student but my only B came from Griggs. He only teaches grad students and one undergrade class. My advice: get another psych teacher b/c both of my roomates got B's and never opened a book. (p.s the 2nd test is the monday after fl-ga game)
his tests are extremely hard!! although he knows the material well and the class is entertaining a majority of the time, many students make a C or lower... find another gen. psych professor if possible!!
Very hard teacher. Only take this professor if you actually want to memorize the whole book and study for 20 hours every test!
His tests are made to be very difficult
He is a wonderful teacher, although his exams are very, very hard. I came away with a very in depth understanding of psych, and as of right now, a B in the class. Worth the time put in.
This guy is unbelievable. I am a smart kid, I went to every class and read everything I could. I still have to drop the class because I have a D. My buddy has a diferent prof. and is gettting an easy A. STAY AWAY, unless you want to drop:)
If you're really interested in studying psychology, especially as a major, I reccomend taking this teacher. You will be prepared for your successive classes in psychology. You have to be willing to do the work though.
He is very hard as everyone says, but you do learn a lot. I really loved psych after taking his class, changed my major to psych, and decided to go to grad school in psych a few years later!
Excellent class. His lectures are interesting as is his textbook. The class requires studying but if you know the material the tests are not hard. I would take this class again anyday.
Griggical. He's a very small man who moans a lot about how everything is "obvious" but his book is basically the test so not too bad.
Griggs is the hardest teacher that I have ever had. I studied for days and whenever I took a test I always failed. My ex-roommate took gen. psychology in the fall with another teacher and got an A. I had to drop the class.
It's easy. You definitely want to make sure you attend the lectures b/c that is 40% of what's on the test, and keep up w/ the reading, but he practically spells out what's going to be on the test for you. It's interesting - dont' be afrid to take it!!
I have no idea why people are afraid of him. He's a really smart, nice guy and his class is pretty fun because he keeps the students involved. The tests are not that bad. You actually have to study and it might help to go to lectures...
I had to drop. His tests were VERY difficult. I went to every class and read the book (which he wrote). The lectures were interesting and fun though.
If you enjoy a teacher that constantly reminds you of how poorly you will do on his tests because you're a simply college student this is the teacher for you. Arrogant, pompous, and not a good teacher in general. Does not respect students and it shows.
I have never been so glad to get a class over with.
He makes you feel like you are going to fail and due to that you just might. His class could be good, but now that he has written the book it is just unbearable. Stay away! I'm so glad it's over!
Worst college experience yet. The class should have been easy & fun - it was miserable. He was so into himself & his book. I've never had lower than an A, got a D+ with intense studying. Shame he has tenure - UF would be better off without him!
3 very hard exams are the entire grade. if you have him, good luck.
He is not so bad, a funny man. However, the class was one of the hardest classes i have ever taken. Although all the answers to the tests can be found in the book it literally requires you to memorize every sentence in order to remember the smallest detai
Super easy, clear class. One of my favorite teachers yet. I don't know why people hate him. I almost NEVER went to lectures and only read the book 2 or three days before the tests and came out with a B+ doing absolutely nothing. Easy as pie, just READ!
I think Griggs is an awesome professor with a love of teaching and learning; it's a fairly easy class IF you read And go to lecture!
griggs is a great professor, u have to go to class and read, i got an A in this class, but beware...if u dont go to class u will not pass this class because half the questions are on lecture only. otherwise a great teacher who loves teaching and is always willing to answer any question.
This teacher is extremely hard. He is a cranky old man who knows too much. He feels that everyone who is not a psychology major and taking general psychologies are stupid, and should be talked down too. His goal in life seems to be making as many students as possible drop the class.
Worst teacher ever! Do not take this class!
I think he gets twisted pleasure out of seeing people drop and/or fail his class. He loves to tell students that statistically those with not so great SAT scores would not do well in college, and he was always giving us these puzzels that were really hard and told us it was a reflection of our IQs.
Professor Griggs is terrible. The material is so easy yet he finds some way to make his tests extremely complicated. I've never gotten a c before in my life..and now thanks to him I finally have one. He should be sent to a nursing home and banned from teaching forever. Get out of this class!!
very hard class, no extra credit points based on 3 test that are extemely hard. alot of reading is required and griggs is a jerk...if you have to take psy2012, take it with another teacher
Professor Griggs is a very smart man, but he is not a good teacher. He belongs doing another job for the University. He does not have hands on knowledge in teaching. Smart man/Bad teacher
He discourages students by telling them they basically have no chance of doing well in his class
I read all of the assigned reading in the text with enjoyment and comprehension. I skipped lots of classes. Two days before the test he gave us a practice quiz and I got 10/10. But I got a C on the test because half the questions were from lecture. Had to drop the class.
He is a very intelligent man and unfortunately knows it. He tends to patronize students rather than teach them and make you feel guilty for not doing well in the class. I would recommend a different teacher if your pride means anything to you.
I don't understand why most of the comments left on here are bad ones. If you like psychology, and you go to class, its an easy A, really. And theres not a lot of reading; each test is on three chapters, each chapter composed of about 25 pages. The class is much better than the comments read.
this teacher is hard and not helpful at all.
can be discouraging and patronizing; for tests, he asks REALLY specific questions from the text and lecture. a bit more difficult than some of the other psych professors
This professor is unhelpful and not understanding at all. If you want to take PSY2012 get another professor.
This class was pretty hard, mostly because the grades only consisted of three exams (including the Final). He doesn't really care about individual students.
He defintly lets you know what you need to do for his class. But his overall attitude is very discouraging and he expects a lot of reading. He uses his own book which he wrote. There are only 3 tests which isn't enough b/c he packs every aspect of the lecture and book into his tests. I really don't know how helpful he is b/c he was too intimidating
absolutely no regard for students. my brother had brain surgery the day before one of the tests and he still wouldn't let me take it a day later. he said that if i was the one having the surgery, he still wasn't sure if he'd let me. also makes you feel like an idiot, no matter how well you know the material.
this man is really intelligent. but his tests are the hardest i have ever taken in my entire life. you have to really study for these exams. i ended up with a C for the class. try to get a different teacher.
hard, can know the material very well and still get C. He has little regard for the students and appears glad that people fail the tests and drop the class
Not the hardest class I've ever taken but I put a lot of effort into the class (reading, studying, making flash cards) and it didnt show on my grades. If I had taken another teacher I would have made an A. You grade is based on 4 exams, nothing else. If you take another teacher and you have more grades (papers, research credit, exams, etc.)
I had to read a lot and attend every class taking good notes, but he is clear and tells you exactly what he wants you to know. He tells you in the beginning that you need to read everything. I worked hard, but got a solid A.
He is a terrible teacher. Does not deserve to be teaching -- no regard for his students. Believes he is smarter than anyone. Not a very nice/happy man.
Get out of this class ASAP!Look at how many ratings he has! It's because he's so awful!Should be an easy class; read notes and take tests, but somehow makes it almost impossible. I'm a psych major and got a C in an intro course after busting my ass HARD all semester?!Who gave this guy tenure?!DROP THIS CLASS, take another prof.-you'll get an A easy.
DO NOT TAKE PSYCHOLOGY WITH GRIGGS!!! He's so hard and so unclear! Just don't do it!
NEEDS TO RETIRE! nOT HELPFUL. hAS A 30% DROP RATE. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
Really bad teacher!
after his second test 2/3 of the class dropped, there is no reason anyone should take this class. He wants everyone to fail and thinks hes the king of the world because he wrote his own textbook. drop this class while you can or get a different teacher, this man will make your life a living hell, and you will do miserable. no respect for students
lets just after over half the class dropped, i would day dream of walking up to him in the middle of class and stabbing him with my pencil THE MAN IS EVIL
OMG! GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!!! I ama freshman who took this course to simply fulfill a gen-ed requirement, not because Im a PSYCH major, like this guy thinks everyone should be! I'm an out of state student who paid over $1500 to fail an intro class its RIDICULOUS! His advice for studying -"study every sentence"! I used to be a 4.0 student..not now.
I took his course three summers ago, and got an A. It CAN be done but I also concede that I had a genuine, abnormally high interest in the subject. If psychology doesn't naturally interest you, then you won't take the course with the seriousness you need, and your grade most likely won't be good. I still remember so much from him three years ago!
This class is great. He makes learning fun. Just make sure you study; if you don't, you will fail.
He is a great teacher. People are complaining because they are lazy. They don't study. You have to study and you will be fine. This class gets you ready for harder classes in the future. Thank you Mr. Griggs!
HOrrible class and the tests are very hard!!!
Get out! Yes its hard and you have to study but his test are crazy insaine. His lectures aren't clear and it is really hard to hear him in class. Find another professor,I'm not lazy and he made my first semester miserable. 3 tests only 150 pts total so it is really hard to get a good grade. If you get stuck with him learn the vocab and take good no
HORRIBLE CLASS!!! I am in his class right now and all you do is study night and day while still getting horrible grades on his riddiculus tests. People are not lazy who feel that he is a horrible teacher, we are right! I seriously spend everyday reading and taking notes for this class... do not waste your time or money!!!!
only gives three HARD tests...thats the ENTIRE grade
Incredibly, painfully boring lectures. I literally want to kill myself every class. He wrote the textbook that we use in class and doesn't even go in order. Your whole grade in the class is just three tests. I read every single word of the text book and couldn't pull off a decent grade. If you want an A, take the online class.
Griggs isn't a bad instructor, he just expects a lot out of his COLLEGE students. Stop whining about it being hard; it's supposed to be more difficult than what you're used to (hence higher education). Besides, he makes it very clear that his class is not going to be easy. If you don't heed his warning then the problem does not lie with him.
As long as you read the book word for word, you will be ok in this class. You have just got to REALLY study! Its kinda nice that he wrote the textbook b/c his lectures are all about the reading. If you go to class, take good notes and pay attention while you are reading, you will be fine in this class.
His lectures are ok, some of them are pretty interesting, but he only gives three tests and they are all very tough. He does not allow any extra credit and doesnt really work with his students to help them out. I recommend dropping his class and getting a different professor!!!
Decent prof IF AND ONLY IF you like psych. Tests are very tough, but not impossible. If you go to lecture and know the stuff in the book really well, you can get an A. Good if ur a pysch major or really like it, but get another professor if you are not too big on the subject of psychology.
Not as hard as people say he is. But then, I studied A LOT. I would run into him at the public library and at the bus stop often.
Horrible teacher. Nearly 2/3 of my class had to withdraw. Tests are ridiculous. I've taken a psych class before, I read the book, and I attended lecture. Still, I got Ds on the first two exams. He will kill your GPA.
All this class is is tests. Study the book
His test are hard for no reason. The information is easy to learn but he just likes to see people suffer. The average grade for the 1st test was a 68% and 65% for the 2nd test!
His class is pretty boring, but you need to take lots of notes and study both of your notes and book in depth!! He gives you really hard tests and makes it questions several parts and if you get one little part wrong the whole question is wrong. Try and get another professor if you can!!
Life ambition was to fail underclassmen
My best advice is to take this course with another professor. Period. But if you need the course and wind up in this section, attend every class and read the book thoroughly. I understand that his passing rate is quite low. He is a stickler on his exams, and he's incredibly boring during lecture.
ya, his class is super hard. i had to drop it. i don't suggest taking his class. if you have to take general psychology, try and get another teacher.
Griggs knows his materials, but his class is tough. You have to study to get even a descent grade in it. Go to lectures, take notes and read the book!
The class was pretty boring, but he was always available to explain anything you didn't understand. Do NOT rely solely on lecture notes to pass. You WILL fail! READ the book, multiple times if you have to.
Yes, he is a "tough" professor. But he tells you he is from the start. If you go to class, pay attention, take notes, and study the book (things you should do for a COLLEGE class) then you will do fine. People are way too tough on Griggs. He is always available to answer q's after class. There is no excuse for D's on his tests. Get used to studying
his tests are very nit picky but other than that, its not hard. attendance not mandatory but he will test on lecture-only stuff.
Just go to every class a read the book and you'll get an A. He really is not that hard. I only studied the day before and got 100s on tests. Just go to class and you'll be fine.
Wow! I read all of these critiques and still took the class thinking if I study hard, it'll be okay. Nope! He sucks! People I'm warning you, register early or take the class another term with another teacher because he is HORRIBLE!
lectures are EXTREMELY important, go to them. always read your book. the tests are really tricky in that the words will easily trick you into the wrong answer. to pass his class, you must pretty much memorize every single word coming out of his mouth and every letter of the text. tests are VERY specific. he's interesting and knows his stuff.
Lt. Griggs is the man. Too bad he's retiring but basically, if you attend and PAY ATTENTION every lecture and read and STUDY every page in his book, you'll get an A. I was struggling for an A because I missed too many lectures. Anyway, great guy, really helpful, sometimes difficult to hear and dry, but a very enjoyable classs
Griggs warns that this is a difficult class, and it is, but it is not impossible. You just must work hard to make an A and study a lot. Attend all lectures and read the book (several times). The tests are hard because they are very detailed, but he doesn't try to trick you. Just study and know the material in the notes and book and you'll be fine.
If you are not a psychology major, Do. Not. Take. This. Class. It is tedious and more time consuming than it needs to be and the class as a whole left me confused and without any interest of continuing psych. If psych is your calling, then you have hope, but otherwise be prepared for tons of studying and if you're lucky, a passing grade.
excellent professor - tough, yes, but i learned a lot from this brilliant man. i worked very hard for this class, but he was very interesting and i'm definitely glad i took his class - really makes the students think and question.
Absolutely the worst professor I've had at UF. He is unhelpful, uninteresting, and his exams are extremely detailed. His class and exams being hard for an intro level psych class is one thing, the fact that he's completely unwilling to help intro level students is another.
