He takies a boring coarce and makes it fun and interesting!!!
HE'S A GREAT PROFESSOR...LOTS OF INTERACTION WITH PEOPLE AROUND YOU...GETS YOU TO THINK..A LITTLE MONOTONE AT TIMES BUT ALL IN ALL GOOD TIMES GOOD TIMES
does not help you if you need it, and very demeaning towards students when they ask a question that he feels is not a good one
he can be very demanding at times, and has a "lawyer" mindset. this is where in order to engage him into conversation , one must have all facts to back up your story or presentation. he can also make the students feel stupid or ignorant becasue they dont knowwhat he knows
Not a hard class but soooo boring! Very confusing tests! Doesn't help you one bit and is very sarcastic. Couldn't stand him. Doesn't tell you what will be on his tests which is really annoying. Hated this class!!!!
Excellent Teacher, I highly recommend him.

Class is alright, deals more with the philosophical side of politics. He can be a bit arrogant at times but overall he's a good professor.
Great professor. Has a sense of humor :)
I had this professor for my Political Science 2310. So i made sure i got him again for the 2311 class. And he is an awesome professor. I highly recommend him. He is very passionate about the subject which always makes the class even more interesting and fun. I just about disagree with his opinions and point of views but its a badass class nonetheless. He leans more to the liberal/democrat party, yet he is pretty respectful comparing to other liberal professors. great class, great subject, andGREATprofessor!

This guy is alright.

I think he really is a good professor. His current events sections on tests are hard but everything is easy as long as you take notes and read the book. I do recommend him for Polsc.
Very good Instructor. You actually learn about Politics. He is very easy if you listen. A very open minded person. I do recommend him
A very good spirited professor, but somewhat bitter at times and VERY strict. Deducts points if you are caught with your cell phone on (or even looking at it). Also forces students at random to answer questions. We did not use a textbook, but the work load was relatively the same. A group presentation in front of the entire class was required.
The problem is with the stupid current events which makes the class very difficult.
This is the best class I have ever taken. But be ready to work and be ready to learn
Wildly entertaining cynic. Read the book and browse through the news daily and you'll do fine.
I was MISERABLE in this class but I learned SOOOO much practical information that I would do it all over again. You get an 'A' if you participate.
He is out of his mind... he treat his class like 1st graders. He needs to get in touch with reality!
This class is difficult. It is most definitely not an "easy a". However, you will learn A LOT. He makes jokes at the expense of the class a lot. So, if you're not prepared to work, learn and laugh at yourself don't take this class.
Worst Prof i have ever had. you can tell he hates life so he takes it out on the class. he knows his stuff but thinks he is god. not impossible to pass but his attitude makes the class almost unbarrable. Avoid him if possible.
He is very rude to his students. But he does curve in the end.
Must attend class cannot stress that enough. He has a sense of humor that can at first come off as rude but overall nice guy. If you need help GO TO HIM he will help you or at least try. Study hard and you'll do fine.
OooO!
Best professor I've had ever! Great sense of humor, seriously take all your political science course with him. Very fun class
POLS 2311 was not an easy lecture. Attendance was mandatory, but you do get bonus points if you've missed less than 2 classes. His humor is often rude and very mean. His quizzes are based on the textbook and current events, but some questions on political figures can be tricky. I didn't like the fact that internet sources weren't allowed for essay
Awesome teacher, if anyone tells you he is rude its because they have no sense of humor. Very clear and organized. If you ask for help he is more than willing to give it. I took both of his political science classes and recieved A's. Highly recommend him.
Way too strict, thought I was back in elementary school with my name tag and assigned seat. Pretty rude and contradictory. Not that great of a teacher.
Good Prof. but tough
Seating Chart. Attendence Mandatory.
Great teacher, knows his stuff most definitely. But if you come in not wanting to learn, do work or have a positive attitude...you will gain nothing and that does not impress him. Read current events, take notes and read your book...suck it up...you need to work in college anyways, he'll do that for you
Professor is extremely rude, thinks his class is the only one you live for. Name tag required. Weekly quizzes. Avoid at all costs
he has a seating chart, 25 bonus points if you attend every class, 10 for 1 absence, 5 for 2. gives a SUPER long final which is almost half your grade. one oral presentation and quizzes (which are HARD) every week. have to take A LOT of notes every class, if you don't LOVE gov, dont take him. his gov 1 is easier, but gov 2 is really tough.
RUN AWAY! HE THINKS THIS IS THE ONLY CLASS YOU ARE TAKING AND MAKES YOU READ EVERY NEWS ON CNN OR NYT; THE WHOLE BOOK, AND WORST OF ALL, HE GIVES A LOOOONG, HARD TEST WHICH INCLUDES QUESTIONS NOT DISCUSSED, OR EVEN MENTIONED IN CLASS.
I love this teacher!!! He was one of my favorites. He makes class a lot of fun! Gives quizzes once a week over the chapter. You'll be fine as long as you read the book. Once again, highly recommend this teacher. He's awesome.
super liberal and stoops to stereotypes of other ideologies. don't ask questions about the class, hell just bark at you to read his syllabus before you even finish talking. demands a lot for a silly required course.one of those teachers with a chip on his shoulder for being a history teacher, will dock points if your phone so much as vibrates.
Great Humor, hard tests, very detailed. Not an easy class but he makes politics humorous.
Bottom line : YOU NEED TO ATTEND CLASS KIDS !!! most adult students with any sort of work ethic does well in here. He does want you to learn, think and do independent work for yourself. He does not baby you or hold your hand. Paying attention in class is a must. Weekly quizzes, by far the most dreaded thing about the class.
Go to class and don't be late, attendance is taken. Double check your records with the TA's. Read his instructions and keep up with the syllabus. Take notes when he speaks and lectures, names, dates, etc. Ask questions and keep up with current events. Not a hard class if you have a decent work ethic. He's actually pretty interesting!
He's not so bad, if you don't miss class any day, do the modules, and keep up with the current events you'll at least get a B - C. I had no interest in this class but he does make it pretty interesting. If you really want to learn this is your type of professor.
Had him for the second part of political science. You must attend class, take notes, and keep up with the current events!!!! Go visit him a few times during his office hours and ask current event questions. All quizes on line from book. If he knows who you are you will get a better grade!
You really have to attend all classes, that will give you some extra points. Online quizzes every thrusday. Final exam is hard. It is the most interesting class and he has a good sense of humor and sarcasm
take him in the mini mesters, its a hole lot easyer
Best teacher I've had in a while. I absolutely HATE politics and history and thanks to him, I actually am kind of interested. You MUST attend class because his exams are based on lectures. If you go to class, pay attention, and keep up with current events you will do fine. He's very thorough and is sarcastic and funny at the same time.
He made it very difficult to succeed in his class because he was so strict on attendanc and doing every single module, also his midterm was ridiculous.
He is an excellent teacher who is passionate about students. He only wants to see people succeed and gives several opportunities for those to do so. Does require weekly quizzes out of class, but they are simple enough as they are open book. As long as you are willing to show up and follow his rules, you can pass.
great teacher:)
I just want to say this is the best class I have ever had at UTEP. The students that are whining and complaining about this teacher are just lazy!!!! You have to do work as you would with any other class. You must do all the work to pass and its super easy!!! Hes really funny and sarcastic. If possible pair up with someone to do the quizzes:)
Best professor I've had at Utep. There is much to learn from his class and I could have not enjoyed it more.
This professor is not the "best professor at UTEP" in my opinion. I have attended two other colleges before and he is by far the worst I have had. It is worse than high school, seating chart, mandatory attendance (just for your at home online quiz to count), and boring information unless you are majoring in Politics. You have been warned.
I personally give this guy props; yes mandatory attendance and seating charts suck, but he does it in YOUR best interests. I know if I was able to slack off without getting called out in class (which he will do) then I wouldn't have done so well. Pay attention and take good notes; you'll be fine. He is also very amusing, stern, and democratic (ha!)
Worst professor I've had in 5 years of college. He treats his students like children with assigned seating, taking role twice every class, unreasonable policies involving electronic devices (you can't look up what he's talking about or you'll loose points). The most uninteresting, uninformative piece of garbage class available at UTEP. BEWARE!
I give this Professor Props! He will embarrass anyone acting immaturely (I personally thought it made class enjoyable).Academically this class is semi-challenging but not impossible to pass. After all he only teaches FRESHMAN and SOPHPMORE level classes, so all these complainers are most likely individuals who are just expecting a handout.
Awesome professor if your one of those students that actually wants to learn and be challenged, if your expecting an easy grade this professor is not for you. Enjoyed this class greatly. Has a very sarcastic humor, yes,. Professor that likes what he does and wants to see students succeed. Learned a lot.
He treats you like a child, but expects you to act like an adult. What does it say about the quality of the class when you have to dock points off for not attending? The class is a core requisite but the professor acts like the students should be interested in the content as if they are Political Science Majors. Take the online class instead.
This professor is VERY strict. He deducts points for every little thing. He is a funny professor and you can pass if you dedicate yourself, but that is the only good thing. In his mind everyone is stupid compared to him, but I caught many inconsistencies when he teaches. I didn't learn anything new. I could teach this class.
By far the hardest class I have ever taken! Dont get me wrong Gutierrez is one of the wisest people I have ever met, but the class is extremely difficult. The quizzes and exams are really hard. If you really want to breeze through this class id suggest you take another professor. He is just a really weird but awesome professor. Really enjoyed his sarcastic attitude though.
class is not difficult but exams are hard. not an easy class AT ALL. almost impossible to get an A. a lot of outside studying
This class is extremely hard. You always have to read . There is no way you can pass a test without reading
His class consist basically on reading the book, taking class notes, and discussing current events. There are quizzes on the book each week worth 20pnts. There are two exams midterm and Final. There on current events and class notes so you MUST pay attention. He’s sarcastic but fun at times. Just participate and youll be fine.. Hopefully :)
Firstly, the class is not easy so if all you want is an easy A, don't take his class. You have to work for your grade but he still gives several opportunities for failing students to improve. Don't be lazy. He's a great professor and knows what he's talking about. I loved his class.
This guy should not be teaching . I sailed through his idiotic class because I am older than most in the class and I already watch the news so he couldn't corupt my mind. He is a terrible teacher . He has no business trying to teach whatever it is he is trying to teach. I plan to go to student affairs
One of the best instructors I've ever had. Those that think negatively about him just don't get him and want to sail through the class because it's a requirement. He comes across as gruff, but he loves his students. If you want to actually learn, you'll love his class. He is always willing to talk about anything during office hours as well.
Great professor, sure you have to read, as would be expected for any decent class. He's extremely knowledgeable and completely helpful. If you don't want to read and expect a blow off class don't take POLS with Gutierrez, if you're interested in learning, then you should love his class.
He is a wonderful teacher. The class is hard but worth it. He offers lots of knowledge.
hes really knowledgeable but can also be annoyingly sarcastic. his class requires alot of reading from the book, the only bad thing is the mid term and final are based on his lectures and current events. i would personally not recommend but if you do get him, PAY ATTENTION! hes also really strict on attendance so just show up and take good notes.
I took him for both Political sciences required at UTEP. He educated me on things that I would of never cared for. I found the class easy. Show up and participate and you will learn. Briefly read through the text and you will pass the quizzes and tests. He is just big on respect, do not be texting while he lectures. I received As both classes.
I wish I could say that Professor Gutierrez had a positive impact on my academic career. He is certainly passionate about his field and wants his students to be passionate about it as well - but his efforts are mired by the way he treats students: IE public humiliation and babying. I'm 22, why do I need a name tag? Seriously?
Rodriguez is a very good teacher, he knows what hes doing and it shows but hes an ass. There's no need for the way he treats his students;the sarcasm and the humor at their expense.
Easy class, quizzes and exams, but this man should not be educating students. Dreaded going to class and watching him humiliate students/constantly whine about El Paso. Egotistical and rude there are much better professors in this field.
The class itself is incredibly easy to pass. Show up, take notes, and read the book. That's just standard University requirements. Professor seems like an angry, cynical man but he really does care and is more than willing to help students if they ask for it.
This guy has a huge ego. During the first week of class he demeaned UTEP (the very institution he teaches at) and its students. Apart from teaching you some political science he'll also teach you the liberal point of view. Props to any smart students that debate his viewpoints and shatter his reality.
From the academic point of view he is a very good prof he will demand a lot from you Force you to read the book, go to class and be up to date with current events. If you are not willing to work and just looking for an easy A in the class dont take him. He does demand order in the auditorium and WILL TEACH. Now, to all of those who say he is rude, yes he is very mean but i believe if you go to a classroom looking for a friend and to play around you will think he is mean and the worse person!
The university may want to rethink it's position on allowing people such as this one to lecture. His inability to communicate professionally with students is his major flaw. The guy may want to attend some basic communication and teaching courses. My advice is to take other professors and avoid this guy if possible.
Gutierrez can be a really cool professor unless you get on his bad side. He'll call you out in front of the whole class for being tardy or if he notices you skip class a lot. You a read a chapter every week from the book and take a quiz on it. Had him for both political science parts and got B's in both. This class is really what you make of it!
Horrible professor. I studied and went to class every day and didn't pass. His lectures have nothing to do with his tests and you can easily fail them even if you studied and had the book directly in front of you. Will publicly humiliate students even if he wrongly accused them of something. Highly not recommended.
This man phenomenal! I enjoyed every bit of his class. You should have no problems as long as you read and listen to his lectures, which are absolute intriguing. But if you feel that actually listening and reading is too much for a professor to ask for then this isn't the class for you. Don't be so quick to call him "bad" when you're just lazy.
Awesome professor and great book he used for the class! Don't forget to use the link on the back of the book for the online practice quizzes and other resources. They help a lot!
Just avoid this guy! Trust me just don't even think on trying to get him for this class just don't
He's beyond sarcastic, and he'll get on your nerves. You'll definitely have to read for the quizzes. BUT, if you talk in class and he knows you by name you will get an A. His final is crazy hard, there's no way I passed that but I got an A in his class. So just participate and you'll be fine.
If your at school to waste your parents money stay away. If your there to learn and be challenged this is a fantastic professor. He is passionate and you apply yourself he will make sure you do well. Not for cry babies.
He is rude and patronizing. He talks trash about UTEP, UTEP students, and El Paso. His method is less along the lines of 'inspiring students by insight and passion' than 'inspiring students by demeaning them'. Also, his commentary on current events is shallow and perfunctory. Some students like him a lot, but then there is no accounting for taste.
As a first time college student, i would not recommend. Makes you look up everything and will leave most on his questions unanswered making the class frustrated. Makes you work hard for it, but his lectures are what you have to put extra attention to.
Gutierrez is a very interesting Professor. He wants his students to think and to act not just sit and write. He wants us to better this nation. He is tough with attendance and his tests are hard so if your not ready to work hard and EARN your grade don't take his class, but if you want to challenge yourself go for it.
If you can stay away from this professor do so, I don't recommend him. He's really sarcastic and during lectures you can barely hear him because he doesnt use the mic well. There are quizzes every week so you will have lots of reading, don't come to class you don't pass. TA walk around writing down everything your doing wrong and you won't get told
Has very tough policies (on attendance, phones etc), which is a good wake up call to freshmen. You need to be engaged in the class, otherwise he may deduct points. He does Q&A at the beginning of each class, which is great, but his answers are not always clear. Quizzes are easy as long as you read. Textbook is essential but it's easy material.
Do not take POLS 2301 with him. Unless you want to be treated like a middle schooler and want to be challenged. He does not tolerate anything such as going to the restroom and getting to class late. His tests are really hard and there is quizzes every week and you have to keep up with the current events.
If you can handle a harsh professor with a tough grading scale, then go for it. I enjoyed his class, but he was rude a lot of times. I was scary to ask questions sometimes.
Super offensive man. All he does is insult his students during lectures and make racial slurs. I actually was thrilled I made a c in his class just so id never have to see him again.
he is not a very good professor he is constantly judging utep students and el pasoans. he will like you if you participate but to be able to participate you will have to read a lot of newspapers and you will have to read the entire book. you must be able to formulate your comments and questions so he doesn't call you stupid.
Great professor. The only reason you wouldn't pass his class is to be lazy. Only requires 1 chapter a week to be read and current events, (turn on the TV and watch the news). He is very sarcastic and intimidating but he tries to make people think and act with reason. I loved his class and got a B in first part of POLS and A in the second part.
Professor Gutierrez makes politics easy to comprehend. His grading system makes it almost impossible for you to fail, unless you are hopeless. You absolutely need to read for weekly quizzes, but they are not outrageously difficult. He might seem unapproachable, but he is a great professor for this subject in my opinion.
He rewards perfectnear perfect attendance. He'll tell you the first week to read current events if you want to pass his midtermfinal which is very true. His class is "tough" but simple. Read the chapter for the week to do well on the quiz, take good notes and keep up with the current events and you'll pass. Study hard and read carefully for an A.
He totally made my career clear. I love his lectures, even when there is a lot of readings and tests can be not easy A; TOTALLY loves his field, which makes the class interesting and worth going to.
Professor Gutierrez is a great teacher. If you want to be a slacker don't take him. Participate in class, read notes, keep up with current events and you will pass. Its really not that hard.
stubborn guy. As first, i was all about participation and gave my best. When I would ask questions he would laugh or not answer them. Worst professor and I'm working on my masters.
Professor Gutierrez was a great teacher he went into detail about everything and even used examples. His test where hard if you didn't take good notes and pay attention. Make sure you know where the 13 colonies are on a map. Just don't be late, and always do the readings and quizes.
Many bad things may be said about Professor Gutierrez, but one thing is for sure. His lectures are always interesting. He is a tough professor, but makes the class interesting. He makes you work for your grade, but you'll definitely enjoy the class. It is all about current events and that is what makes it interesting.
DO NOT! get him, he is the worst professor ever! He gives too many quizzes and his final exam is extremely hard! he expects everyone to fail!
Simply put, read the comments of those who hated it and those who didn't. The differences in spelling, punctuation and grammar tell the tale. If you are not ready for college or found high school hard, this is not the class for you. If you are not ready for this level of education, you may find him "mean" or "unfair". Insert frowny face emoji here.
I am a double science major, with an extensive background in calculus, engineering physics, chemistry, and biology. Regardless of all these hard classes, my once high gpa dropped considerably due to this unnecessarily hard class. He forced assigned seating in a lecture hall that holds a few hundred students. HE WAS AWFUL!!!
I struggled in the class because sometimes I wouldn't do the readings. But I honestly recommend him as a teacher absolutely great and he really teaches his students to open their eyes to the world around them. It would be a shame if you did not take one of his Poli Sci classes as an undergrad. Take a challenge!!
He is a smart guy and knows if you're paying attention. Go to class and participate, if not expect to fail.
Summer course. Annotated bib, 4 papers, 2 exams. One text book and one novel. Tests are hard. Get digital book for help. Initially he said no study guide -but then provided it. He canceled 2 of the 4 papers after students said the work load was to much. Material is not as interesting as one would hope a gangs class would be.
worst class ever. His tests are confusing because you never know what to study for!!!
I had heard good things about him - he was tough, but you'd learn. It seems like he's given up trying to teach now, though. I would NOT recommend him, no matter what. His tests aren't based off the lecture or the readings... I don't know where he gets them from. I have a 4.0, study hard and do well in all my classes, but he's unreasonable.
Quiz every Friday, participation required. Keep up with current events, quizzes are hard. I would NOT recommend him
Great teacher, future students must know Gutierrez class is tough because he seriously hammers your mind in reading, thinking hard, and learning stuff. If you are unwilling to learn and read all these negative comments just don't take his class. If you want to challenge yourself and have a taste of reality take his class its great!
His class is very challenging. If you want to be challenged I recommend taking his class. There are quizzes once a week. There is a chapter to read for each week. His mid-term and final are only hard because he is specific on what to study for. Overall he is a good professor, his lectures are interesting and you really do learn a lot.
Mr. Gutierrez is so rude. He gives quizzes every week and you must be ready to read 30-40 pages before every quiz. There are about 13 quizzes, mid-term, and final (VERY HARD). AVOID HIM. If you are late he takes off points if you are absent takes off points. Final is 60questions, 4 free response VERY HARD!, crossword puzzle with no word bank.
If you're looking for a easy way out, he's not the professor. He is honestly a really good teacher and provides help if necessary. When he sees the quiz grades are low, he goes through the chapter with the whole class and points out key information to know. He gives a lot of work but you will definitely learn!
He is interested in what he teaches, but the only grades are the midterm, the final, and a project. There is no homework, and no quizes and that makes your chances of passing less if you dont do well in the exams. You have to study current events, but current events arent specific which makes it harder to pass the tests.
Quiz every week about a chapter of 30-40 pages long. The mid-term and final are super hard, gives a lot of open questions plus a 55 exam. The quizzes are not that hard but if you don't read at all you will never pass this course. He is mean, I never liked him. Don't take this class
Overall, lots of charisma and clearly knows his stuff, but feels unapproachable and unfriendly. Gives reasonably tough quiz every week, so READ THE TEXTBOOK. There are current events questions on his exams, so be sure to keep up with the El Paso Times. Pay close attention in lecture and keep up with readings to pass.
It is not an easy class, but it will be the most informative if you pay attention to him. Do not miss class because he will notice and your grade will suffer. Read the newspaper because it is a considerable portion of the tests. Take clear notes because he does not provide power points, there is no textbook and the tests are long.
He's kind of mean. He's kind of a bully. But I'm sure he's proud of that. He will pick on people. To be honest he's pretty condescending.
I have mixed views on this professor. This has definitely been the hardest class. I've had a pretty high GPA but the class is extremely hard to study for, even with the tutoring. If studying is your forte, then take it. It definitely isn't an easy class. He is rude and bullies others. Take at your own risk.
Professor Gutierrez is a hard professor to have. He makes you work for your grade. I was awful with the quizzes but I participated a lot so my grade was pretty substantial. If you are passionate about politics I would recommending taking his class. Sometimes he may seems unreasonable but you just have to whether through it.
Likes to hear himself talk. Treats you like high school students. Passionate about the subj but includes a lot of his personal opinions to the teachings. Reading and attendance is mandatory. Personally I wouldn't take him again. You can get an A if you try.
He's a good professor. He challenges your opinions and ideas. He calls you out if you aren't paying attention and if you get there late, he'll stop lecture till you're done. I had him for Summer 1 and there was 13 quizzes, a project and of course a final exam. You need to read and tutoring is recommended. Overall, I really enjoyed his lecture.
He's a great professor. Very passionate about thinking skills. Would recommend highly to anyone who wants a good challenge!
I took his intensive Summer course where you must read a chapter almost everyday and take quizzes- which if you can read shouldn't be hard. His lectures are interesting about current events and such. To some he seems sarcastic and mean- but he has expectations for you as a COLLEGE STUDENT. (Read, listen, take notes, participate, show up Pass)
Mr. Guttierez is not a bad teacher, but he treats students like they are in high school, and tends to talk down to people. He is a bit of a bully, but he will soften up to you if you participate in discussions and keep up with current events. Be ready to WORK.
Professor Gutierrez is tough but is definitely very passionate about the subject. He taught me a lot of info that will benefit me throughout life. He can be very blunt at times so it is best grow thick skin. This class is challenging so you must attend class, pay attention to lectures, know your U.S. history and learn to think critically OR ELSE!
This class was very challenging even if it was an introductory course, he was very knowledgeable in his field. I stressed the whole semester, but it was definitely fun.
Took him in the summer and he is very clear. Go to class, participate in lectures and read and you will pass his class. It is effortful but it is worth it if you want to get an A. You do leave the semester with something more than a grade.
Professor Gutierrez is so rude. Aside from his class being challenging, he is no help outside of class if you try and visit him at his office hours he will be rude and usually no help at all because he is not willing to give you the time of day. You will only pass the class if you keep up with very specific current events.
Professor Guiterrez can be rude, condescending, and insensitive, but he cares. He demands your best effort and in return, you will get quality instruction. Lazy students stay away. You can't skip class, disregard readings, and play on your phone. More importantly, if you don't have thick skin, stay away. Leave your ego and feelings at the door.
Worst politics professor ever. Does not care for students and is very arrogant. Do not take classes with him, it is a torture.
If were being honest here I dont recommend this professor. Poor attitude towards students and constantly treats you like a high schooler. He does expect you to WORK in the class (as all professors should) and its not hard. I really wanted to enjoy this course and its unfortunate his attitude ruined that. VERY STRICT on no phone policy as well.
This professor is a very prejudicial person towards his students. You only need to go to class because is mandatory, but no need for paying attention. Current events discussions during class will not help you for the current events quizzes. He doesnt have respect for others, but demands respect from others. He is not smart he is just well informed
as a professor, his curriculum is rigorous but you're going to learn and he expects college level work and demands your absolute best. (has bad reviews because of the weekly quizzes on the chapter readings) On the other hand, as a person, he is extremely rude and condescending and just assumes you're borderline mentally unfit to be in college.
He takes attendance in an AUDITORIUM. He hates technology so he prohibits it. He treats you like a high school student. WILL call you out in class if you're doing anything that isn't looking at him and taking notes. He's rude. He doesn't care for feelings. He makes it as hard as possible for you to pass. Get ready to read 70 plus pages per week.
he is really mean and does not like to help others. If you make a question and finds it dumb he will laught at you. The quizzes are hard and the current events quizzes are impossible. Avoid him at all cost.
I will not take it again never!!!!
Be prepared to keep up with current events from a day to day basis. Going to class is a must and you must take very good notes on everything he says. Do not take it if you are looking for an easy class.
Excellent professor! Doesn't put up with obnoxious students who are in class to be on their phones, to be disruptive or not pay attention. Once you realize he is there so you can learn, you'll learn to appreciate his teaching style. Read, go to class, and participate in class and you'll be golden! Offers extra points for attendance so go to class!
This class is good. It is possible to get at least a B in this class and if you get lower than that it's because 1: you got lazy or 2: you don't care. If you do all the readings and pay attention and understand his lectures than you're gucci.
He's really strick, I absolutely hate his class! Don't take Professor Gutierrez!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Unless you want your gpa to drop! boring class, rude professor and extremely hard to pass. He does not want to pass. please be sure not to take this class
Awful teacher he is really rude doesnt know how to respect people or grade. His reviews for the quizzes wont help or any of the lectures he dones during class. Dont take him !!!!!
I found this professor really difficult, yet helpful. Don't take this class if you're just looking to get by. However, I highly recommend this class if you want to learn something.
Very uncaring, rude, and disrespectful.
He gives out no extra credit so if you miss too many quizzes, group assignment, bomb the final- you're screwed. Pretty rude but is funny. Attendance is mandatory to pass the class. Only 1 final, 1 group project, weekly quizzes based entirely on the book (sometimes on current events). Don't take him if you don't have to.
This class was mandatory for me, so with that being said if you dont need/want to learn much about politics DON NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! You will learn if you want to pass, if your lazy you will have to drop! He has a point system for grades. As long as you have enough points you will pass.
Weekly quizzes on spoken lectures. Wasted time discussing current events, so material was rushed. Individual volunteering not equitable to group project. If you don't do well in most of the quizzes, you won't get a good grade. Words quiz questions as if you were a poli-sci major in a senior level class. Will treat you like a child and feel dumb.
This is a great professor. All of the people crying are the ones who didn't come to class, and could not stay off their phones. all he wants you to do is read your textbook, participate in class, AND STAY OFF YOUR PHONE.
Basically you have to watch the news or read the paper all the time about politics and know all the political things happening in the U. S. or your gonna fail the final which is the main part of your grade. I had great quiz scores, failed the finals most likely and got a C. He warned us, this wasn't unexpected. I didn't like it tbh.
Hard class but you will learn something if you pay attention and show up to class. and study.
Best professor ever. He's well respected by his students and loves to teach. Can be sarcastic but is really funny. People crying in other reviews are those who wanted an easy A. Which, is achievable when you simply pay attention.
Dr. Gutierrez is one of the funniest and sarcastic professors I've ever gotten. People cry because all they want to do is get an easy A but all you have to do is pay attention to the news and reviews her does for quizzes and the final and you should be good. People need to stop whining and complaining over a professor who you will learn a lot from.
He is very sarcastic, but he's funny and cares about what he teaches. I never cared for politics before the class but now I have a very different perspective. His grading system is very straight forward on how to get points and he does offer extra points on different things to reward students. I will be looking to take him again for Pols 2310
He was pretty cool up until he one day said that if you are planning to go to another university and still at UTEP then you should leave. Pretty rude and lost all respect I had to him. There's nothing wrong with wanting to go another university. UTEP is not the greatest university ever, chill out. His classes are pretty average too.
By far the worst professor that I have ever had. The class itself isn't too difficult but he makes it unnecessarily harder than it has to be. He does not teach but expects you to know the material. The aspect that I dislike the most about him is that he is extremely rude and acts like he is better than everybody.
To sum it all up he is a really horrible professor. He is extremely rude however the class is not too hard if you pay attention and study.
13 Quizzes, one every week on chapters 30-40 pgs long. Pretty sarcastic professor. The quizzes required a good amount of studying to do well on. One major project throughout the semester either volunteering or a city project. Hardest final Ive ever taken. The current events on the final are mostly unheard of. Assigned seating, and name tags.
So overall I enjoyed the class, because he does know what he's talking a bout for the most part, but it was a very difficult class for the majority of the students in the class (90%). There is no text book, take REALLY GOOD notes. Keep up religiously with news. Participate. Honestly I wouldn't take again. If your GPA matters, I wouldn't recommend.
He can be very mean. For the most part, I did not learn anything because he worried too much about people who got up to go to the restroom other than being concentrated on the material. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Too much homework, stops the lecture when you go to the restroom. The most horrible professor that has ever taught at UTEP. Grades way too hard, and makes you sit in front of the class. What ever you do, do not take this class, look for another professor or take the course at EPCC or drop out of school.
This professor is a nightmare. I had an accident during the middle of the semester leaving me home-bound. He did not understand my situation and did not care about anything I had to say. He is a very rude person and a hypocrite. He preaches people skills, but on the contrary he has none. Try your very best not to take his class.
AVOID! Stops for every person who steps out. Mandatory attendance. Political science topics are slim. Highly centered around reading current events in local news, especially on the final. I didn't sign up for a read the newspapers course. Mess up no room to recover. Have some self-respect and avoid this unnecessarily difficult INTRODUCTORY class.
I loved this professor but good lord I hated the way he taught. He teaches an intro course like a senior or even dare I say a graduate level course. Constant quizzes, always reading, keeping up with current events. Very ridiculous. Unless you want to work your butt of for an A like I did. Choose another prof.
I feel very conflicted writing a review for this professor. He is very sarcastic but funny. He's also very blunt, not many like that. Keep up with current events, pay attention to the reviews he does for quizzes and tests, you should be fine. Make sure to not be absent since attendance is part of your grade. He also curves the final.
Your grade will be based on weekly quizzes (he reviews the class before you have them or morning of, they are based on chapter and current events), midterm, final (which he curves), and a project. You can work on teams or individually. He also gives you the opportunity to volunteer for local campaigns instead of doing the project.
I took his class in summer, WORST decision ever. If you GPA matters, don't risk, its a hard class specially to people like me that are not really into politics.
If you care about GPA, avoid this professor. If you don't keep on top of current events in the news (local and non-local), you won't pass because you're tested on those too. His teaching style is questionable. Curves final. Hopefully by then, it's not too late. Stops for every interruption. It happens; professors should be used to this. Let it go.
I have mixed feelings about this professor but overall I don't think I'd retake the class if i was given the option. I was a straight A student and I HAVE worked my butt off for a grade before but but it was definitely not this stressful. I was hoping to enter in a class that we could discuss topics, etc. (like other courses) but this was not it..
It takes a mature person to succeed in Gutierrez. I would not take another class with this prof.
This class is NOT easy at all. He does not have a textbook, so he expects you to take notes of EVERYTHING hes saying in class. If you dont speak up in class, you will already have a bad start. There is a quiz every week and attendance is mandatory or you will not make it (PROMISE). He is really sarcastic, can get rude & offers little to no help
If you are willing to put in the work, he's a great choice.
The second I walked into class on the first day of the semester I could tell I wasnt going to like this guy. He thought he was cute all semester indoctrinating his students into believing his own political views. Sad. No one cares about a teachers political beliefs!! Also not a very easy class to get a decent grade in.
He is an ok professor. He makes you work for your grade, but that is fine, nothing we cannot handle. However, this individual is a disgusting human being. Does not respect students. He is literally always angry. He is rude and condescending to EVERYONE. Honestly, I dont know what this man has gone through, but that is no excuse to be so unpleasant.
Professor Gutierrez is a rude teacher. He would constantly stop the lecture just for "interruptions" of students who just wanted to go to the bathroom. He ridiculized students who would use their computers to take notes just because he hates electronics in general. He was also rude during class and would often interrupt students. Just chill man.
Horrible professor you won't learn anything in his class. He is grumpy and expects a student to know everything, he was not at all helpful during the pandemic he made it even worse to pass. Won't curve the grade. Makes a lot of errors on his part and will still fail you. No extra CREDIT. Absolute disgrace to the university.
No phones or laptops 20pts off if caught, powerpoint lecture write everything and what he says on written notes he does not post powerpoint on blackboard, quizzes each week 20 questions are 20pts get 100pts in quiz & u dont have to take final, he requires 8-10hr of community service for credit with a typed written statement any less hrs is a B or C
Professor Gutierrez is a funny professor and also very straightforward. I did learn a lot from him however his class is very difficult. He makes you work for it. You need to pay attention in class, take notes, participate, and not be late or absent because it will cost you. Gives a lot of quizzes and you HAVE to be updated with the news.
Class is very straightforward. Read the chapters to pass, participate in his lectures. ALL he wants is for you to talk to him & your classmates. Communication is KEY. I didnt figure it out until 7 weeks in but after I did it was a breeze. If youre looking for an easy A this definitely isnt your class but he'll help you out if you make the effort.
i took this class online and it was horrible. all he gave was links to read and quizzes but the quizzes wouldnt open or the quiz didnt exist when u clicked on the quiz link. the quiz was only available on monday which was horrible, and when brought up that the quizzes didnt open he did nothing but say thats ur fault
I took this professor's class both in person and online. I had to drop the class in person because the professor was arrogant, lazy and rude. Relies on TAs. I retook the class online and it was a little better. All quizzes and assignments through the textbook, but the final exam was very in character. Opinion and lecture based.
You want an easy A? Don't take this class. He really doesn't care about this students, you can email him all you want but he won't help at all. I took this class online and if you take notes on what you read, whatever you take notes on won't be on the quizzes so don't even bother.
I had to teach myself the whole course, the weekly quizzes were rough and difficult. Lots of reading and many times the quiz questions were on irrelevant things that didnt make sense to ask. Definitely struggled with this course
Getting an A in a liberal art class - especially for an avid reader and an individual that is passionate about the subject - should not be an unthinkable prospect. The problem is that this professor structures his class in a way that complicates this venture; the topic is not hard in and of itself. Many incompetent liberal arts teachers do this.
You can get 50s and on each quiz and still pass. His teaching style online is pretty confusing but you get the hang of it. He's much better in person Im pretty sure, but this online class is pretty hard
The professor has been nice to me and his lectures are short and easy to understand, but the quizzes have surprise questions that are nowhere on the powerpoints or lectures. There is no textbook so sometimes he just uploads an auto file and a word doc and you have to take all the notes yourself. Seems like an easy class, but hard to do well.
Every week, we were assigned 1 quiz and were given 1 final. Overtime, the quizzes started to become harder because he tested us on material not covered in the lectures. However, this isn't why I'm giving him 2 stars. I'm rating him low because he made us use Respondus LB (webcam) for EVERY. SINGLE. QUIZ. Which was an inconveniencing nuisance.
Really tough quizzes, if you are considering on taking it on the summer, forget about it
Gutierrez has high expectations for his students. To succeed, you will have to study the course material rigorously. Best of luck to everyone taking his classes in the future.
He is one of the worst professors I've ever had, zero comprehension from his side doesnt allow to retake any assignment/test not even for health related issues, gets mad if you get up to go to the restroom, not a really engaging class.
Gutierrez is really hard, but also very easy if you actually takes notes and pay attention in class. One thing that frustrated me about Gutierrez was the unnecessary comments to other students that were made. You will need a textbook if you have to take this class, if you don't pay attention well don't take this class. There is a quiz every class.
Really regret taking this class with this professor. He is very rude and condescending to students. I usually get As and Bs, but I struggled with this class. He gives weekly quizzes, some of the questions being over things he has not even gone over and just expects you to know. Its as if he TRIES to make things as difficult as he can.
The class is really easy to pass. If you want an A or B you have to work for it. Grade is made up of weekly quizzes, 12 hours community service, and the final. Academically, the course is good, and you'll learn a lot. The professor is a bit rude and tough. Attendance is required. 20 points off for using phones. Don't take the course if you're lazy.
Every Thursday we had a quiz about the material. Quizzes are really hard and detailed. He also includes questions about current events going on in the world, so if you dont know about news, it gets pretty hard. I would highly not recommend taking him, I am a 4.0 science student and his class is the first C I have ever gotten.
OMG DONT RUIN YOUR LIFE. THIS WAS THE HARDEST CLASS EVER. QUIZZES EVERY WEEK AND VERY HEAVY LECTURES ABOUT VERY VERY VERY SPECIFI THINGS THAT NOT EVEN ANY OTHER OLITIC PROFESSOR KNOWS ABOUT. BEWARE. GETTING A B IS IMPOSSIBLE AND THE GRADING RUBRIC IS TOUGH. GET READY TO DO SOCIAL SERVICE TO PASS. STUDYING ISNT ENOUGH.
Prof. Gutierrez is tough and if youre a lazy student, you definitely wont pass. Strongest advise I can give is dont skip class, pay attention, take notes, and keep up with current events! The class is very engaging and interesting. Youll learn a lot. His lectures are hilarious but may be offensive to some and hes sometimes rude to students
Easy to pass if you do decent on the weekly quizzes however he is very particular on what he wants in his students. If you had to leave to go to anywhere he would stop lecture and stare you down. Never have your phone out or else will remove points. Half the semester was just the constitution make sure you keep up current events and participate
I got an A in Genetics, Chemistry, Philosophy, Computer Science, Calculus 1, 2, and almost every other course I took, but I wasn't sure whether I would end up with an A in this class, so I had to get a "Pass" grade when "Pass/Fail" was still going on. Richard Gutierrez humiliates students and functions as an obstacle, as opposed to a support.
This professor is extremely rude and he humiliates you for at least checking the time on your phone. You get up to go to the restroom and he gets mad and stares you down the whole time like you are worthless. Would not recommend taking a class with this professor.
Rude and not cooperative when you are struggling to make a passing grade."No, use the book", is his answer if you ask for tutoring or any help. If you have an emergency or god forbid need to use the bathroom, he will stare you down, and watch you leave the classroom, and stop any lecture he was in the middle of. Stay away for good on this one!
What I like about him is that his class was very structured so I always knew what to expect. Another good thing is that he answered questions a lot! The biggest downside is that he does not budge! If you miss class you cannot re take any quizzes. Do not be absent. Have in mind that even if you're absent for a good reason, there's no retakes at all.
He is very passionate about what he teaches, his quizzes are really hard and the textbook is hard to understand, he might be very tough, but you will definitely learn a lot in this class, just don't ever miss class, because it is essential that you go and listen to every lecture, don't take this course if you are lazy. Good luck!
I took his course over the pandemic online only. Over ten students and I sent a complaint to the school. We were not given any textbooks but only recorded lectures of his voice only. He had powerpoints that were not helpful in quizzes and he would put random questions in tests as trick questions. I would stay away from this class online
He is a tough teacher but he's not as bad as his reviews make him seem. Make sure to read every chapter on time, there is a weekly test. Keep up with current events. Don't use technology in his class, you'll lose points. If the class can't get the exact answer he wants he will not give the answer. His lecture is different than the reading.
He's a good teacher but is lecture heavy and will have an attitude if your late so DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU RELY ON THE SHUTTLE. His grade scale is set for you not to fail, but the reason I consider him difficult even though my grade was high was because there was a large gap between letter grades... its wack. Would recommend though.
No homework. We were only graded on a weekly quiz, 10 hours of volunteer work, & a final.Pros: He's very knowledgeable, grades by a point system, and passionate. Cons: He can be very rude, demeaning, lecture heavy, tough grader. Overall he's a mixed bag..like a sour patch kid. Its a manageable class & definitely possible to pass this course.
Rude, condescending, and humiliates students. Has an elitist/smug attitude, and doesn't answer questions pertaining to the material. He will stop his lecture to preach about lack of discipline, personal views, or "tech misuse." Tells you to take notes, doesn't repeat himself when asked, and has pitiful PowerPoint presentations.
This professor is overall terrible. The lectures do not pertain in any sort of way to our quizzes or exams. He is also overall disrespectful, entitled, and so confusing. Every day I come to class nervous about what the lecture would be about. When it comes to power points the notes do not correlate with what our test will be about.
Even a simple question the professor will have you completely embarrassed in front of over 200 students. I understand as a huge class he does not have time to stop class time for a simple question but that does not make it right to criticize a student who is trying to find an answer. Being called out in front of everyone is so humiliating.
I was unable to check RMP due to late registration, but do not take this professor. He was rude and enjoys humiliating students. Has a smug and entitled attitude, and will berate you. Dropped this course because I honestly understood nothing and hadn't learned anything. No book, powerpoint lectures were odd and didn't correlate to his lectures.
This class is terrible! I never had a problem with any of my classes until I ran into this guy. First of all, there are over 200+ students in this class and he decided that each student should have a assigned seat. There are no textbooks for this course, but the notes that he provide will not help you pass a exam.
This professor is SCARY/ CRAZY!!! but he is hilarious he is not afraid to say what he thinks, there is a quiz every week, which includes the lectures, current events (you need to look for on your own). your grade depends on how many points(correct answers) you accumulate from the quizzes, test, community service. attend to class everyday for EX CR!
It was the peak of COVID, and this professor never reached out to the students. Would never reply to emails, did not give the opportunity to catch up on assignments. Hes probably the only professor that Ive actually had a problem with.
Worst professed I have ever had in my life
Worst professor at UTEP.
I would not recommend taking this class, even for a credit find another professor, his class is only based on lectures, current events and exams. I am a straight A student, but this class really made that difficult. I would only suggest finding another professor for this class because he is very disorganized and rude.
No extra credit. If you take good notes, participate, and study youll be fine. Tests are difficult. 10 hours of community service required as a final project .
I had to drop him because of how disorganized his lectures were and how much he enjoyed berating students and humiliating them. Anyone that would walk in late by even a minute, he'd stop lecture just to stare them down. Worst thing he said for my class "it's not my fault nobody loves you" when a student forgot to print the Constitution.
Absolutely dreaded coming to this class. Make sure the seat you choose on the first day of class is one you will be okay with for the rest of the semester because it becomes your assigned seat. Literally only 3 things graded the whole semester; midterm, 10 hours of community service, and final.
He is the WORST professor I have ever taken. Everyday we show up to class to be insulted and stared down. When someone asks a question he either gives an audacious response or "It's a mystery". He's rude and just doesn't care about his students.
Worst professor of all time. Overall, a grumpy old man.
Im a straight A student and this is the only C i have ever received. this professor is rude and unclear with his directions. He gets joy out of insulting his students. also he gives you no excused absences even if you are sick or have an emergency
This was the only C I received for the semester. Which doesn't bother me knowing I never have to step foot into his classroom again. He would make sure to take the glint of happiness from anyone in his path; and we were only graded on 3 things which was the midterm, final, and community service. I would never take a class with him again.
This Profesor is grumpy, rude, and does not care about his students. He grades you on 3 things (2 being exams) and his lectures are extremely boring. I am amazed at his ability to make every sudent that takes him hate him. He spent 20 minutes before the final talking about how we shouldnt even botter taking it. His class is the only C ive gotten.
Gutierrez has no textbook. Two exams and community service grade the class. Very little information on the slides, and you must take note of what he says, which most of will not be on the test. Expects the class to keep up with "current news" throughout the entire semester. He makes the class unnecessarily difficult. Take a different professor.
humiliates and berates students, if you come in late or get up during lecture he will stop talking and stare you down. "slackers" is one of his favorite words. demands we have questions for him but then wont answer the ones we have clearly. notes must be on paper, no phones, no excused absenses. very particular on how he likes things done.
Professor Gutierrez wasn't bad per say, however his class only consisted of 3 grades, the final, the midterm and community service. The community service was fun and easy but the exams were difficult. He would test you on material that was not covered in class; you were expected to know everything about current events. NO PHONE POLICY whatsoever!!
As a person, he was really interesting, snarky, and funny. His class though, yikes. The only assignment from the whole semester was to do community service and a one-page reflection paper. And 2 exams, midterm and final. If you did the community service and midterm (no matter the grade), you did not have to take the final. Hard class overall.
Don't take him! Please, you'll learn nothing and waste time! If you absolutely have to, be ready to have the most unassessable and rude professor ever.
This professor included service learning in his lectures but it was mostly lecture heavy and it became difficult as he would zoom past lecture points. If you take this class be prepared to understand current events (as it's on the finals and quizzes). Do not miss class as 3 classes are missed you will be dropped from the class.
We were like 20 people in the class 7 dropped, 5 or 6 did good and the majority struggled, some of us failed and others barely passed, if you still want to take his class take this in mind, at least one person in the class will be insulted by him, if some one is late he will look at him meanly and in test days DO NOT WEAR A HAT if you want to pass.
Out of touch hardass. the class is very much his way or the highway. He talks down to students and seems to think he is the ultimate authority on how to teach. Should have retired 10 years ago.
Even though his class only met once a week I would dread even going. He has such a weird way of teaching. He doesn't have any lecture notes posted online and lectures without showing slides or anything. There are no makeup quizzes or extra credit as well. Really rude to some students and expects participation.
He is a great teacher, he will call on you ask you to form part of discussions. He is strict and has rules however you will learn. We need more instructors like him. Be ready to learn in his class. This is not an easy class if you are just wanting to slack off for an easy grade. Good luck!
This professor has a very particular teaching style that can be tough to get used to. Engage with the material, use helpful resources like unstuckstudy ai, and you can still succeed despite the challenges.
He lied to our class during COVID when the pandemic first started and awarded the majority with a C due to his own mistake. He is bitter and narcissistic and is NOT there to help you. This man cannot be dealt with by UTEP as he abuses his tenure and his students. HEED my warning.
One of most unforgettable professors throughout my education. No sugar coating, just awesome 😎 two thumbs up 👍 👍
I took him back in 2021 or 2022 and I would dread going because he made me not want to go. I would cry because he was just a rude professor. He would stop his lecture and stare at you when you got up to go use the restroom. He would make a comment saying oh clearly my class is not important and that we were just terrible students.TERRIBLE PROFESSOR
