Outstanding teacher and class. Great choice for a reference after grad.
He's got a great sense of humor.
Such a funny guy, and a great lecturer. It's one of those classes that you actually enjoy going to.
Best class all around. And one of the best professors I have ever had
I think this is the only class I've ever actually looked forward to going to.

he is the best teacher. a revolution
This is the best class i've EVER taken @ Umass! i've told everyone i know to take it with halgin. you look forward to going to class...a task that is near impossible for most students!
He talks about himself a lot, but he's a great teacher. He makes abnormal psychology very interesting.

His lectures get very moving and very interesting. It is fun to be in this class.
great teahcer, great psychologist. I love his class. never miss it. Never fall asleep during it either:)
His class came highly recommended to me, and I'll definitely pass on that recommendation! His lectures are like listening to the stories of someone who's BEEN THERE. He has experience and teaches brilliantly.
AMAZING class

His lectures were always extremely interesting. Best professor I've had at UMass.
Amazing teacher and so effective. I hope to be able to take a class with him the future.
One of the best class I had in UMass. Actually enjoyed going to class and talked about it to my friends. Never fell asleep even though it was a morning class! Many of my friends that I recommended the class to are enjoying it as well!

amazing class, it is too bad i took it my last semester as UMass...went EVERY day loved it!
Really interesting class. Pretty hard tests. He's great though.
This is the only class I faithfully went to. I didn't miss a single lecture. He's great, entertaining and knows a lot. I learned so much from him and really enjoyed his class.
for abnormal psych his class was very interesting and was one of my favorite classes that i have taken. As long as you do the work and stuff then you will do great. Highly reccomended teacher...very funny
very good teacher, very clear lectures.
Dr Halgin was definitely one of the best professors I've had in my 3 years at Umass. He explains everything by using an example from his personal experience or from one of his clients, which makes it a lot easier to understand. Very funny as well
Class was great! Very enjoyable and interesting. YOu need to work hard and read his book, because the tests can be challeging. Abnormal was one of my favorite classes at Umass
I love you halgin
Awesome class, very interesting. Do the reading bcause the exams can be tough. One of the best classes I've had so far at UMass. I didn't miss a single lecture. Dr.Halgin is a great professor & he really knows how to teach a class. Halgin rocks!
Intelligent guy with a pretty good sense of humor - good class.
Very hard, but so interesting. 8am and i never missed a class!
Awesome class, he was an amazing professor. I never missed a class and that is a lot for me.
He's one of the best profs at UMass. He's so endearing and smart. His class was so good, i truly enjoyed attending class.
I can't stand to miss a class. Halgin is very smart and funny and I'd recommend his course to anyone. Very interesting material and teacher.
Best class I've ever taken!
Like Halgin needs another rave review! But seriously, this man is one of the best teachers I've ever had and I'm actually sad that class will end soon. He's interesting, intelligent, funny, kind, and everything else you could want in a professor!
I LOVE YOU HALGIN. Best class i ever took

brilliant
He is a funny guy with a sense of humor. His lectures are always interesting and he is a great outstanding teacher. I dont think i've had a better teacher so far. I recommend him to everyone
This class is so awesome! Best class I have ever taken. Prof Halgin is such a great story teller and so interesting.
It is a good class, very interesting stories. He's a little full of himself sometimes. The tests you definately have to prepare for. I would recommend him though.
Defnitely the most interesting and dedicated teacher! Always kept the class interested always packed the lecture hall!Best class I have taken at umass by far!never got sick of going to his class. The stories he had were unbelievable best thing had 1st hand experience w/ what he talks about!
such a good teacher!!
Best class I have ever taken! His stories are so interesting and you will have no problem paying attention in class - I promise!
Halgin's class is the best! He is such a good professor and gives you plenty of chances to get extra credit.
Pretty hard class, but this guy really knows his stuff, really liked what he taught in class and found it interesting, just wish he taught more from the books. The TA's were really great in this class too.
best class at umass by far. its amazing when 500 students are completely silent during lecture and are only listening to him. you definitely have to read the books for the exams, only bad part.
I looked forward to every lecture. He is extremely intelligent and he loves his job. If you go to the class and do the reading you will do really well on his tests, and you will learn so much.
Halgin is a RIOT. Looked forward to every class, learned more than any other class I have taken. Tests are hard, need to do the reading in both books, but if you prepare well for the exams (try the sample quizzes and tests) you will get an A.
Greatest teacher at UMASS! He made the class so interesting and was really funny. He taught you alot, and his test were very fair. It's not an easy class, but he makes it so interesting that you don't mind reading the material. Take this class!
BEST TEACHER AND CLASS I'VE EVER HAD!! Very interesting lectures, never missed a single one!! Always kept interesting w/ case studies. HIGHLY RECCOMENDED,even if you're not a psych major!!! YOU'LL BE HOOKED W/IN THE FIRST 5 MINUTES!!
This teacher is a really shallow thinker. He told stories most of the time and seldom got to the point. Also acted like he was a star player. Worst class I've had. Couldn't stand being in the same room with him.
AWESOME CLASS!!!!!! This has been the best class that I have taken so far. You have to go to class and skim the book, but it is a pleasure the way that he teaches. I didn't miss a single class becasue it wasn't like he was lecturing, it was more like he was telling us interesting stories.
Dr. Halgin is one of the best professors UMass has. His experience with the material ensures that there is never a dull lecture. You'll be self-diagnosing by the end of the semester. You must keep up on the readings, however, because the lectures are based entirely on case studies.

easily the best class and best professor at umass. every lecture is interesting, he shows movie clips, tells stories. tests are pretty easy, if u go to lecture you will remember the info thats on the test. very funny guy too
Best professor at Umass I've had
Excellent class to take, would suggest it to anyone. Great teacher and you learn a lot from the class.
This class is the only class I've never missed or been late to in my 2 years so far. I loved it. Very interesting.
one of the best professors ever..his class is awesome..I never missed a day
Great Class, interesting and thought provoking~
AWESOME! Funny, approachable!
I love this man...so interesting and makes class so fun. Made sure I was there every class and even took human sexuality with him. So much nicer than his wife :)
the best class in the entire psych dept.
his class is so interesting, definately take him if you can, you'll learn so much
Awsome class, the best in my college experience. It's fun and entertaining, but there's a lot to learn too!
I LOVED this class!!! It was so interesting, I hated to miss it! Def. take this class!!!
My favorite class from my sophomore year, one of the three best I've taken at UMass period. Prof Halgin is interesting, knowledgable, entertaining, and very professional. If you can't get into the class at UMass, try to get into it at Amherst College.
absolutely amazing
This class is enthralling and he is a captivating speaker. This is my favorite class to go to. He not only teaches the material but he uses his own case studies and short clips from films so the class goes by in a breeze. Take it if you like Psych.
Amazing professor. True passion for subject material. Best class I've taken at UMass so far. If you can take it, without a doubt take it with Professor Halgin.
I loved this class. He's the man.
what can i say that hasnt been said? Well, you should feel guilty if you dont take this class. Tests are not easy because of the amount of material but go to the review sessions and you're straight. Honestly, i wish i had this class for every semester. So good...i felt horrible about selling the textbook....so i didnt.
Absolutely incredible. Take this class if you can, psych major or not, you will not regret it. We got there early just to get a seat (the auditorium was ALWAYS packed) Never missed a class, and the grades are earned, not too bad if you put in some effort, which is easy becase the material is so engaging.
AMAZING CLASS. He's absolutely engaging, wonderful to watch. Class was always full. Worked each topic as if we were doing our own case studies. Loooved this class and I absolutely adored Richard Halgin.
Awesome class! Prof Halgin is an excellent speaker. Lectures are not boring and there are a lot of questions on exams from the lectures, so it is important to go.
Amazing professor. Amazing class. Lots of material, but class is amazing. You must read the books (there are two), because there will be questions on the tests about them. No homework, no final, just three tests.
Richard Halgin is a man among children....
Halgin rocks! by far the best most interesting class i've ever taken in college. loved going to lecture everyday.
take this class!
I love and respect his personality! This course was the best ever.
most amazing class most amazing person. he is a genuis of psychology. best teacher around, best class ever. tests are not difficult if you read and either go to lecture or get the case studies. 3 tests only, no final, midterm, or papers. guest speakers are amazing. such a touching class. ta's are awesome as well. you won't regret this one!!!!!!!!!!
best professor i ever had! i highly recommend this class. all his lectures are interesting & his review sessions really help u get a good grade
Didn't live up to my expectations after what I read on here...Nice guy, bit of an ego, but knows his stuff. Easy A
Really good class. But kinda hard. He's really interesting to listen to though.
He is an extremely nice person and is very clear. You have to do alot of the readings on your own, so the book is a mandatory but its pretty much common sense on the exams. He is a great person to be a TA for and you can tell he is passionate about what he practices
I absolutely love this class. Halgin always has the best stories to tell and everything is so interesting. Exams are multiple choice and pretty easy as long as you go to class and read the textbook. I would definitely recommend taking this class, whether you're a Psych major or not!
Dr. Halgin is the best professor that I have ever had. He makes the class interesting by sharing stories of his actual cases and provides three review sessions a week if you need help or extra credit. He is a great teacher and you can tell he loves what he does.
Halgin is literally the best teacher we have here. You need both books, he wrote them. His lectures are so interesting. He doesn't just tell you information about certain illnesses, etc. He tells a story about a client he had and the issues he/she had coping with his/her disorder. Offers up to 16 extra credit points, no final, 3 MC tests. Easy A
His lecture is fun but the exams are hard. He's pretty useless too, only has office hrs for an hr a week for 400+ students. He's also really into himself, which is annoying.
Guy is so full of himself, thinks hes a comedian or something, stupid multiple choice test, 50 questions each time, tries to trick you on question, guy is extremely overrated, take overtree instead
Class was always super fun! His exams were multiple choice. Go to the taking sides website and take quizzes there to do better on exams. Also go to extra help sessions and get the extra credit and do the review there too bc they give answers for exam. Exam based mainly on class lecture than book. use lecture as guideline to read and fill notes.
The best professor I've ever had. His lectures are captivating: each one focuses around one of his own patients, and gives deep insight into their lives. Only gives 3 tests, and they are all easy if you attend class and do a little reading. 400 people are enrolled in his class, and the room would be full every day.
Halgin is interesting, knowledgeable, and humorous. He takes a personal interest in the well-being of his students, and the reality of how widespread psychological problems are. He is not full of himself, just a great orator who uses it to captivate his audience. He does a good job of it, too.
By far the best class i've taken at umass and i'm not even a psych major. He made the class engaging by teaching with case studies. It was amazing he was able to get a 500 person lecture to attend every class. says something about his teaching style.
Best professor/class I've EVER had/taken. Take good notes in class and do the assigned reading. It's challenging but so fascinating. The only class I'd never consider skipping.
Halgin's great. His class is great. His TA's are great. Take it.
Halg is the best. He has awesome TA's...including hockey players! There are only three tests though so you need to do well on all of them. Extra credit points for doing studies. Really interesting and fun!!
very interesting materials, however, he talks and talks in class without putting any notes up. He expects everyone to write as fast as he talks and to write down every thing that he says in class. You will fail if you don't go to class because 90% of the exam questions are from whatever random stories and thoughts that he comes up with. 3 tests
One of my favorite classes.Very interesting material.3 exams, up to 16 points of extra credit offered.Review sheets for exams, do those, don't bother reading all the chapters.Review sessions with TA's extremely helpful and also extra credit.Halgin cares a lot about his students and sparking interest in the field. You'll regret not taking it.Got an A.
Best teacher i've ever had- inspired interest in the subject with his stories that make you want to come to class
By far my favorite class I've ever taken. Halgin is so passionate about the material and transfers that to his students. Go to all classes because tests are based off lectures. Material could be a bit hard sometimes but overall, very easy. Def take it even if your not a psych major.
Although attendance isn't mandatory, you'll actually WANT to go to every class. Halgin teaches the class the way a class should be taught- he makes it interesting and doesn't drone on about unnecessary details. I absolutely loved this class!!
This is the best class I've taken on campus by far. Extremely interesting and not hard as long as you pay attention in class and study hard.
Halgin delivers an informative course that hits you on a gut level. He goes over case studies in class, which are very intense, but it covers the material well. You come away from class with support and guidance from Halgin and the TA's.
The best way to do well in this class is to go to every class and do the assigned readings. I found the TA's to be extremely unhelpful when I had to miss a class. Halgin was unhelpful as well. So, if you think you can go to every class or get notes from someone else when you miss a class, the class is easy and usually interesting. Easily got an A.
RPH is the man. He loves what he does, and it shows. If you pay attention and study then you're good. I recommend going to this class, he recalls movie clips and in-class things on tests. But honestly, you just go anyways, it's a good time.
The class was at 8 in the morning and I still never missed a class. The lectures aren't mandatory to go to, but I actually looked forward to class and wanted to go. Tests can be hard if you don't read the textbooks and/or attend the lectures. Great class!
This is the best class i have and will take at umass. i actually think im going to take it again senior year because i loved it so much. have to go to class because the notes are all his personal stories about clinical patients. most interesting class ever im in love with this man.
This class is simply great. The class consists of very entertaining lectures punctuated by videos. Grading is solely based on 3 50-question MC tests. Study and attend class an you should perform well. This class is worth waking up at 6:30 for. It is important to note that this class is not always a pick-me-up and some stories are disturbing.
The best psychology teacher I've ever had. He explains and emphasizes the dos and don'ts of clinical psychology which even certified psychologists seem to not understand. Most of his classroom examples are personal experiences he had working in the field.
Best professor I've had at UMass and best class I've ever taken. Not hard to wake up for the 8am knowing I'm going to really enjoy class. Also not hard to do well on the tests when you can't help buy pay attention to the lectures. Only grades are from 3 multiple choice exams but if you go to class, listen, and review the readings you'll do fine!
Absolutely amazing! Best professor I have ever had. Definitely worth waking up at 5, take him!! 3 multiple choice exams, and plenty of opportunity for extra credit.. which actually prepare you for the exams.
Hands down one of the best professors at the University. You'll enjoy going to lecture, even though it' an 8AM (don't skip, because a large chunk of test material centers around case studies discussed, videos shown, and diagnostic criteria presented in class. Readings are engaging. All in all, Halgin's the man.
He has to be one of the best professors at UMass. His lectures are so interesting and entertaining. You have 3 50 multiple choice question tests with a lot of extra credit offered. It's actually worth getting up at 7:30 for every Tuesday and Thursday. Everyone should take this class before they graduate. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Absolutely amazing course! I had this as an 8am, and I never missed a lecture. The exams are mainly based on what's taught in class, which helps you out so much. He teaches the material through stories which is so nice. The TAs are so helpful. There's not reason why you can't do well in this course. Exams can be a little challenging, but that's all
Got mono at the end of the semester & missed 2 lectures and got a bunch of questions wrong on the exam b/c of it. basically, go to EVERY class. It's impossible to copy someone's notes and get all the info. Either way, the class is REALLY interesting. Stories about his patients and he's very funny, and not in a corny way. Good class.
Wonderful professor! His exams are not easy, you have to pay attention in class, and go to the review sessions, they are so helpful. His teaching method is so different and amazing, easily one of the best courses I've taken at UMass thus far. The 8am is worth it, but don't underestimate this course, its not just another easy psych course.
This class was absolutely incredible. His style of teaching is amazing and the subject matter is very interesting. The exams were difficult but all in all I have never learned more from a course at UMass.
One of the best classes ever! He truly inspired me to take the first step into the clinical psychology field. 8am sounds quite tough, but you definitely want to go to class to listen fascinating stories from actual clinical psych field. You need to read textbooks AND go to class(or review sessions) in order to get good grade. Must take class!!
Incredible class, highly recommend it. By far the best lecturer I have ever had and the stories are jaw droppingly fascinating. All exam information is posted to moodle, so with a simple review of each classes "key terms and concepts" it is very easy to excel in this course. The TAs also hold like 5 review sessions per week for Extra Credit!
This has honestly been my favorite class thus far at Umass. Halgin is an amazing professor, whose captivating stories make you want to attend lecture. 8AM may seem like a drag but trust me when I say once you are there it is absolutely worth it. His exams are not terribly hard, review notes and read the books. LOVE HIM!
Halgin is one of the most interesting people I have met. He has so much experience in the field, and uses real examples from his practice in class. The class was at 8AM, but Bartlett was always packed and attendance is high because he is interesting. The class exams are mostly based on in class lecture and videos, so attendance is suggested.
Wonderful professor and a great guy. He has the most creative way of teaching that incorporate real world experiences and text book terminology. I took this class at 8am and enjoyed every second of it. I am not a morning person but it is hard to fall asleep in his class. I would highly recommend taking one of his courses.
Greatest class I have ever had at UMASS! If you attend class then you should clearly get an A. He explains everything and offers 16 easy extra credit points as well. The only bad thing about this class is that it was at 8am but even then he kept the class interested at all times and it was totally worth it.
Halgin is absolutely the man. Some people say he has a huge ego, but that's just Halgin talking to you from a place of experience - Detractors are usually underachievers. Fascinating and engaging lectures that are worth waking up early for! Best class at UMass.
It's an 8AM but one of the only few you'll bother to wake up for. Lectures are based on his own case studies, so go to class even though it's technically not mandatory (you'll really need to for exams). He's charismatic and interesting. I really enjoyed this class. You can earn up to 16 points of extra credit!
Lectures are heavily based on personal case studies by Halgin. Information about these cases show up on the exam and so does information that you can only find in the textbook. Exams are multiple choice but can be tricky despite him saying that they aren't. Didn't love that he makes you buy two textbooks and both are written by him.
Best professor Ive ever had at Umass. The exams are difficult, but not impossible to get an A. He makes the lectures very interesting.
He is hands-down the best professor I've ever had. He is extremely brilliant in the field of psychology. I HIGHLY recommend taking his classes!
Halgin is absolutely the best professor I've had in my college career at UMass. Not a morning person and I've never skipped an 8:30 AM class I've never been so involvedinterested for an hour and fifteen minutes straight through. Take this class you will NOT regret it, he's an all around amazing guy!!
GO TO LECTURES! It seriously helps your test grade and they're really interesting anyways so you probably will want to. Such an amazing lecturer. Lots of extra credit opportunity. Grade is only 3 exams, but if you go to lecture and are awake, take notes, and read a bit you will get an easy B. Put in a little effort and you'll get an A.
Richard Halgin is perfection in the human form. Not once did I miss a lecture, and its an 8am class. he keeps you captivated and listening the entire time. His dog Gidgit seems pretty cool. Only thing that sucks is your grade is only made up of the 3 exams, which are based on lecture and the books readings (A LOT OF READINGS). extra credit possible
This is literally the only class that could hold my attention for 1 hr and 15 min especially at 8:30 am. Best class I have taken at UMass. Halgin uses real examples from his experience, is pretty funny, and genuinely wants to help you succeed. Only graded assignments are 3 exams, which are easy enough if you go to class. Great guy TAKE THIS CLASS.
This class is amazing. Lectures are based off real life case studies and are set up more like story time than a lecture. Pay attention in class and do the readings. He posts what you need to know for exams and gives extra credit. Early class but you won't want to miss them. BEST CLASS.
Dr. Halgin is AMAZING. Lectures are interesting and are so worth the 8:30 time slot. He also puts up key terms from every lecture and the text on the Moodle page, and has weekly review sessions to go over the material from the previous 2 classes that are optional but you get extra credit for!! Tests are fair, and he's a great guy. Highly recommend!
Abnormal Psychology was a really great class. Halgin is amazing, he's a great speaker, therefore, his lectures are amazing!! Such a nice person, willing to help, responds to his emails. Funny.
Hands down the most amazing professor I've ever had. Definitely worth getting up at 8:30. Three tests makeup your grade (no final). Lectures makeup a majority of tests and there are no slides so attendance is mandatory if you want to pass. Interesting reading assignments if you like Psychology. Exams are easy if you study. Lots of SONA extra credit
Dr. Halgin is the best professor I have ever had. Brilliant and funny. your grade is made up of only 3 exams but lots of extra credits. I learned a decent amount of materials with this guy, his lectures are really interesting! Best lecturer, definitely recommend!
Halgin is one of the most amazing, inspirational professors I've ever had the privilege of having.
Best class I have taken at UMass. Lectures are inspirational and interesting, but you need to take REALLY specific notes. MUST read from both of the two textbooks- and don't fall behind because it is a lot of reading. Tests are super specific and I felt as though they were unfair. If you are looking to put in the work and be inspired, go for it
BEST CLASS I'VE EVER TAKEN. hands down. most amazing professor, he knows exactly what he is talking about and is extremely prepared. only 3 exams so you have to do well, no final. He offers extra credit discussions. Definitely go to reviews before exams they help! wish I could take this class again, but definitely go to class and study hard!
He is simply the best!
Loved this class! I'm not a psych major and didn't put time in to read, so I thought the tests were a little difficult. You need to go to lectures because tests include the case studies that he discusses in the lectures. He keeps your attention in a 8:30 class! If anyone needs a pass/fail class this would be perfect!
The best professor I have had as an undergrad. However the class is a lot of work you MUST attend all lectures and keep up with readings to do well. You will not want to miss a lecture because they are extremely interesting and never boring. Highly recommend taking this class wether you are a psychology major or not!!
Prof Halgin is without a doubt the best professor i have ever had at UMass. His lectures are amazing, definitely go to class. If you don't you're missing out. If you want to be a psychologist this class is a must take. It's worth getting up for a 8:30am
When I went to my adviser saying that I wanted to take abnormal with a different professor last spring, she suggested I wait and take it in the fall with Professor Halgin. This was great advice because he is by far the best professor I have had. He is an engaging lecturer and the material and videos are very interesting
If you have the chance to take this class, take it with Halgin. His class is so well structured and well taught. Exams are based off the readings but mostly off lecture. You get a term list to study and exams are pretty straight forward. He really cares about his students and is a genuinely nice guy. Best class I have ever taken at Umass
Loved this class. Best class at umass so glad I took it. My mom had Halgin and even remembered how great he was and suggested I take this class. Very knowledgable and passionate about psychology. Lots of extra credit
Hands down the best professor I have had in college. Makes the content you are learning about relatable to real-life situations as his lectures are essentially stories about his experience in the field of clinical psychology. This class inspired me to declare a psych major and I would recommend it to anyone, can't go wrong choosing this class.
If you are taking Abnormal, definitely take it with Halgin! His lectures are amazing and based on clients he has had as a psychologist, and as long as you go to class you will do well on the exams.
Prof Halgin's class has made me remember why I love learning. He has an incredible teaching style as each class is a look into the experiences of one of his own former patients and their struggles with whatever disorder we are learning that day. I have never learned so much and would attend his lectures simply for enjoyment!
Amazing. Never before have I been EXCITED to go to an 8:30am class. Professor Halgin is an incredible lecturer who captivates the entire auditorium. I cry in this class a lot because of the poignant examples. There's simple online textbook homework and 3 exams. So long as you come to lecture and do the reading, the exams are a piece of cake.
I took Abnormal Psychology with Professor Halgin two semesters ago and still miss having class with him. I wish he was a professor for more psych classes because the amount I learned reflects how well he taught the material in a fun and interesting way, and made me want to go to class on a regular basis.
Professor Halgin is easily one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are very engaging and makes it easy to get up early to go to class. As long as you go to lecture and do the homework assignments online, you'll get a good grade on the exams.
Never taken a class like this before but I'm so happy I did. No powerpoints, just Halgin standing and talking about real life people with real life disorders. 100% engaging. The use of real life examples of his clients helps the information stick. A MUST for anyone wanting to work in Clinical Psych field. Also so interesting for non-Psych majors.
Amazing. One of the best professors I have ever had. Lectures are incredible, and as long as you go you will do well on the exams. Take Abnormal with him at all costs!!
Just as everyone below me has written. Prof. Halgin's Abnormal Psych. Course was phenomenal! He only teaches it in the Fall so wait to take it with only him! He uses real life experiences from his former clients to structure every class lecture (no slides u won't need them). As an 8:30am class I woke up excited to got every class. Highly Recommend!
If youre trying to fill credits, no matter the major, take abnormal psych with Prof. Halgin. He is truly the best professor at UMass, and his lectures are so good. Its 8am, but I never found myself falling asleep or bored.
I took Abnormal psych with Halgin, and it was definitely my favorite class to date. He only lectures in the early morning, but his lectures made me actually want to go that early. He is so passionate about the subjects and teaches through a series of case studies, which was amazing. This class is also so eye-opening, definitely take it with him!!
He is by far the best professor at Umass. His lectures are so interesting and emotional evoking. No lecture slides. He talks about his own experiences and clients all class. I looked forward to going to class everyday. Exams were very fair and pretty easy if you go to class. Grading is 3 exams (no final) and 6 online quizzes. Highly recommend.
I highly recc. for both psych and nonpsych majors. Uses his real previous patients as the core of each class, no slides. 3 exams, 6 hw assignments, no final. I'm not a morning person whatsoever but I wake up excited to go to class (its only offered at 8am). Halgin is by far the most inspiring and best professor I've had at umass. A must take!!
Debatably one of the best professors I have ever had, and by far my favorite course I've taken at UMass. His lecture styles are more like TED Talks than lectures, and they're really enjoyable to sit through. His exams are "attendance rewards", so you absolutely have to go to class but if you do then they are a breeze. A must take class at UMass
Richard is a great lecturer and the material is very interesting. However, test questions are very specific and it is very hard to get an A on the exams.
Didnt really live up to the hype. The class started out strong but by the end of the semester it felt likened was droning on for a lot of the class. Spends 20-30 mins of each class playing movies that are usually pretty boring. Not sure if it was worth waking up early for it.
Halgin is a really great guy. His lectures are stories of his experiences in the abnormal psych field. You have to really take notes in lectures because the exam questions are specific. He keeps the class interesting and is super hilarious. Great class for anyone even non-psych majors. This class is worth waking up early to go to!
Honestly please take his class it's amazing he's so caring and passionate about abnormal psych
Incredible professor!
Honestly the best professor I've ever had. Amazing, interesting lectures based on his own experiences as a psychologist. Definitely have to go to class because most of the tests are based on the lectures, and he doesn't use power points or anything. Highly recommend.
My absolute favorite professor and class at UMass. Dr. Halgin is incredible, the work is very manageable, and lectures are so interesting. He cares so much about everyone in the class and is extremely sensitive in regards to the material he shares with the class. Taught me much more than abnormal psych concepts. Incredible teacher and person.
Halgin is a very caring man and a great lecturer! Makes 8:30am worth it if you can make it. He respects his students and this class is an easy A if you attend lecture, do the practice multiple choice on moodle, and the open book connect HW. Would recommend as an elective
Really nice prof. Grading is 75% exams and 25% online homework. Not many hw assignments so the workload is very manageable. Exams are fair but requires quite some studying if you want to get an A. I would not say this is an easy A, you still have to attend every lecture and put effort into studying. Interesting material.
Dr. Halgin is the best professor at UMass, his lecture is at 8:30 am but he makes it worth getting out of bed.
Dr Halgin is an amazing professor ! He only teaches this class in fall so don't miss it. His exams are pretty easy if you attend all his lectures and take solid notes. The homework is openbook and most of the questions are directly from the textbook. There are lots of opportunities for extra credit like TA review sessions. Hands down the best class
Such an endearing man with lectures that will change the way you view life.
I took Dr. Halgin’s class over a decade ago when I was at umass. It was one of the best classes I took at UMASS. My husband and I still talk about it to this day!! Incredible lectures and he always had great anecdotes in them.
Doc Halgin is a fantastic teacher. I wish I could take this class for the first time every semester. He cares about each of his students and holds informative and interesting lectures.
Lectures are amazing. Based on clients he deals with but with pseudonyms, I would recommend taking this class. If you go to the lectures and exam review sessions you can get an A easily. Homework is just online textbook questions. (40 multiple choice). Definitely worth waking up at 8:30am for.
Cannot recommend this class enough. It's an 8:30am but so interesting and entirely worth it. Dr. Halgin is so genuine and sensitive with his lectures, in-depth, realistic, and funny at the right times. There was 3 exams that were open note and remote during class time and were just from the lectures. If you can take this class, definitely do.
Best professor ever. I cannot express enough gratitude for my experience in this class. Tests were easy but more importantly lectures were amazing, insightful, inspirational, and taught me beyond psychology lessons. Dr. Halgin if you see this thank you so much.
I have truly never had a better teacher nor professor in my life. The class was engaging from the first until the very last class. Halgin draws upon his own personal experiences, something I think all professors should do. He has made me want to become a clinical psychologist. Cannot recommend Dr. Halgin enough!
I cannot recommend Dr. Halgin enough. He truly makes getting up for an 8:30 worth it - his lectures are so interesting and you can tell he really cares about his students and the subject matter. The exams are easy if you pay attention. If you can take this class, do it! He is genuinely one of my favorite professors at UMass.
I understand why everyone loves Professor Halgin, and I think he is very smart. As someone who has struggled with a handful of the disorders he covers in class, I personally found Halgin's attitude a little off-putting. He thinks very highly of himself, and his career has been impressive, but his cockiness left a bad taste in my mouth.
Dr. Halgin is one of if not the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are early, but he makes it worth going to them. He is an entertaining professor and teaches the class material in a great way. The exams were basically all on lecture material and the textbook gives a good background to class material. I highly recommend this prof.
Prof Halgin is an amazing teacher, and attending his lectures will genuinely be a highlight of your day. I've never been so engaged in a lecture before. They typically consist mostly of his personal anecdotes and vivid stories about his experiences as a therapist relevant to the topic you're covering. HIGHLY engaging, would 100% recommend Halgin.
He is just so kind and his lectures are both informational and entertaining. Homework is easy and tests are all online and open-notes. You can tell he really cares about his students and his field. Material covered can be quite heavy but that is to be expected, can help students decide if psychology is truly the route they want to go down.
he is such a narcissist and always talks about himself constantly...he seems so conceited. he is definitely a racist, sexist and homophobe. and he is obsessed with the hockey team. easy class though but he just does not seem like a good person
He is so cocky. So full of himself.
Prof Halgin is hands down when of the best professors at Umass. He is so caring and a genuinely nice guy, his lectures are interesting and actually made me want to get up at 8:30.
Literally THE BEST professor to have ever taught at UMass. Would kill to take another one of his courses but sadly he only teaches 380 now. It was worth getting up at 8:30 in the morning for sure. You can tell he knows what hes talking about, how caring he is, and how he loves his job. Amazing professor! 100/10
Hands down the best professor at UMass. Dr.Halgin is an amazing lecturer, and it is the only 8:30am class I would always wake up for. He tells stories about his past patients so it's super interesting. If you want to go into the psych field you NEED to take this class. The homeworks are an easy A, and tests are easy as long as you pay attention
Professor Halgin was awesome!!! 10/10 recommend. His lectures were always worth waking up at 8:30 for. In each lecture, he discusses a case of a client he worked with (whose mental health condition pertains to the curriculum- some of it's heavy). The exams aren't bad if you pay attention in lecture, and the homework is perfectly fine too.
Dr. Halgin presents the content of Abnormal Psych in a manner that prompts you to pay attention. You do not come by that often for an 8:30 class! He relies on case studies with his past patients to relay information, which is super interseting. Homework is manageable, but you may need to reference the textbook. Exams are also fair.
Seriously one of the most interesting people I have ever met. He uses his real life experiences in his lessons which makes it so much better than a normal class. I enjoyed going to his lectures each week and that is not something that has ever happened to me in college. Tests and Homework are online and as long as you take notes they are easy.
Professor Halgin had a unique take on lectures that you don't come by often. His case studies provided great insight into the heavy topics in PSYCH380. An 8:30 am class is tough, but he made it worthwhile! The course itself was very easy. Sometimes he comes across as cocky, and he definitely has a bias towards men and the hockey team though.
I loved him so much I would do anything for this man fr
One of the best professors in the psych department. Dr. H's lectures are all based on his real experiences as a clinician and are so informative and interesting. I found myself actually looking forward to his class at 8:30 in the morning. Pay attention in lectures and you will do great - definitely take his class if you can!
Engaging lectures with real-world case studies make this class a must-take. Attend class, use the textbook, and try unstuck ai - it really helps with exam prep. Professor Halgin strikes the right balance between rigor and support.
I am honestly shocked to see any rating below 5 stars. Halgin is an incredible professor and genuinely cares about the material he teaches as well as his students. The exams are not difficult as long as you attend lectures and they are all open notes. He is very witty, smart, and funny. The best class I've taken and the best professor I've had.
Halgin is an excellent professor. He has been in the field for 40+ years and is extremely knowledgeable on what he teaches. Along with his clinical experience, he makes every lecture extremely worthwhile, and I highly recommend you go to every lecture in person. Very manageable workload, open note exams, excellent structure. Highly recommend!
Professor Halgin is incredible. As a freshman I was nervous to take a level 300 course but he made it beyond enjoyable. His lectures are very entertaining and made it worth taking such an early class. I was able to learn a lot about how it is to be a psychologist while also learning the necessary components of the course. Highly recommend.
Dr. Halgin was one of the best professors I've had at UMass! He showed so much care in helping his students and in teaching. His lectures were engaging and utilized case studies that he experienced during his time as a practicing therapist. He is the nicest guy and highly respected. Highly recommend!
Best professor at Umass amherst. Made me excited for my 8:30 am every day. He's very engaging and passionate about his work. 10/10 recommend.
best class and professor ever.
Halgin is a fantastic professor. Uses his real experience as a psychologist to convey course content, lectures are kind of like story time and it makes them worth attending. Class was at 8:30 in the fall, but I didn't mind. The exams were harder than I thought: open-note, but you have to come to class to do well. Also plenty of TA review sessions
This was an 8am because I took it in the fall, but it was an 8am that I never even considered skipping. Loved going to lectures and learning about real-life case studies, and Prof. Halgin does the best job at teaching difficult topics like mental health. Extremely knowledgeable prof. Tests are fair, homework takes a while though.
If you are interested in clinical psychology, please take his course!
I LOVE HIM SO MUCH, i could not emphasize enough to take this course. even with it being an early lecture and a huge class he really does care about his students. He is an amazing professor and explains well the topics. PLEASE take this course if you have the chance!!!
He is one of the best MEN I have ever met in my life. He is sweet, kind, so smart, and so helpful. His lectures are sad and will leave you crying every class. He is the sweetest old man in the world I can't stress that enough. He cares and to do well you need to go to every class, I was excited to go to this 8am class every week.
Dr. Halgin is like the professors you see in the movies. His lectures are incredible, interesting, and so thought provoking. This class, taught by a phenomenal man, will stay with you. The information I learned was helpful beyond the classroom. Take a class with him. You will not be disappointed.
