Hammerud is very knowledgeable and truly loves what he teaches. Though disorgonized, he covers the material REALLY well. Most importantly, he is very respectful to every opinion that a student has even when fellow students scoff at the same.
Nice guy, Disorgonized but very smart
Hammerud is a great guy. His ideas are very in depth though his appearance might not make u take him seriously. His tests are difficult if you don't take notes. He gives a lot of in class exercises, very clear.
Still in the dark about some argumentation but really love the class. Papers graded quickly and fairly. Lectures were memorable and exams not too hard. Remember that it is a philosophy course; logic is practiced everyday.
Very interesting fellow. The stuff he puts on the boards looks like brainstorming, very confusing. But a very nice person, he seems nervous all the time. He makes a conscious effort to improve his teaching.
Very intelligent, but disorganized. Nonetheless I absolutely recommend him. His classes are fun and interesting, he’s a good professor and a fair grader.
My favorite teacher! Concerned more about the important concepts of philosophy, rather than the stupid details and dates. He is a pushover, and took a lot of crap from the students. His notes are garbage, so just sit back and listen - you'll be fine!
I'm taking him right now and his lectures are a little dull but the work is fairly easy. not too many people get a good grade on his first test, but the tests after that are pretty decent. as long as you keep up with the work and do the essays, youll be ok
Although I got an A in the class, I think the class was a little hard. He is a very good teacher, very helful. But unorganized. Make sure he has all your grades recorded before the final exam.
Nice guy, but very disorganized(while looking for our papers he pulls out credit card bills, shopping lists, etc). Lost 2 of my essays and didn't record half of the others. He made the changes though. Always look at his gradebook for errors.
Passionate teacher, very disorganized, but also a very nice and fair guy. You might fail tests, but he gives you easy opportunities to make up points. You will learn some neat stuff and you will also get a laugh when he gets chalk all over his face :-)
He is very disorganized, his notes are crazy. Buy a stapler but throw away his handouts, they just get confusing. I thought it was a boring class, but he grades very easily on the essays and you can make up bad grades on the tests with the extra credit he gives every day- often 40 points a day. It can get confusing, so keep up with it on your own.
i really like this guy, he seems to be very into his work and will be willing to stay however long it takes to explain certain concepts after class.
Mr. Hammerud is an awesome teacher! Really passionate about his work and really polite. He'll take the time to answer any questions you have and he grades pretty fairly. You'll probably fail the tests but do your Xtra credits and you can make up for the lost points.
very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very repetitve in his lectures, and if ur smart it to yo and in effect makes class boring.however, he knows the material well and explains it fairly well. recommended if ur a bit slow...
Dr.Hammerud is a very nice and helpful teacher. He would spend all his time if you have questions. He is very easy going teacher. You will get easy A even if you are ESL student.I become interested in philosophy after i took his class last quarter. i seriously recommend you to take this class if you are thinking about taking philosophy.
Prof H is one of the best teachers you will have in your De Anza career. He is the most caring, resonable and briliant man you will ever have haphazardly stumble upon. He's so nice that some students try to take advantage of him. Don't do that ... you'll remember it forever. It's like stealing money out of a homeless mans tin cup. Don't be jerk.
He's great to take, especially if you have other classes on the side.He allows re-takes on homework and midterms. As someone mentioned bellow me-he is extremely nice,so don't be a jerk or take advantage of him.He also allows lots of extra credit. So all 'n all you can't go wrong with him.One more thing, he repeats himself alot,so that you understand.
Even though I am an international student, I got an A from his class. He gives us a lot of extra credit, which are interesting quizzes..(take home quizzes) You can retake the midterms. His exams from what he teaches in class. Attendance is not mandatory though. I really enjoyed the class. Thank you, sir!!!
A boring lecturer, but he is so helpful and really tries to make students understand the lecture (repetition, easy examples). Made all tests take home, extended all deadlines. Very helpful, just really nice teacher, but some people took advantage of him. Boring maybe, but easy A and he's just so nice!
I have never seen a teacher so poorly prepared. I have never taken the time to write a review before but feel it's necessary to warn everyone. You can get an easy A, thats for sure... buy you'll not learn a thing. He is the most incompetent teacher I've ever had. I regret taking him. Don't waste your time... he's pitiful.
the most boring class i've ever taken. i suggest to take ewrt2 rather than this class. the things i "learned" are not goign to be sticking with me. he's extremely nice though, good amount of extra credit but its not worth the time wasted in here. oh and there's a few papers, pretty easy, and tests seem easy to peek. but you didn't hear that from me
I enjoyed this professor a lot. He not only was patient with the class, when I could not be patient with them, but he explained everything with clear and concise examples. I want to tell everyone that to choose Professor Hammerud, is to choose a professor who knows what he is doing and will give you second chances. Don't abuse his kindness though.
Although he is unorganized he is very helpful and makes sure you understand the material. His tests are hard and your not allowed to use notes. he gives plenty of extra credit make sure to do it all.
Most of his lectures were fun. His tests are hard, but he gave a redo for test1. There is a lot of extra credit! There is no way that you can fail his class. Show up to class, listen, and read. If you are concerned about your grade just talk to him. He is very helpful. The only bad thing is, he is very unorganized! I strongly recommend him.
so much extra credit, will make my grade look really good when i transfer
You can't not do well in this class. So much extra credit. EASY A++. He's an easy going prof.
His exams were not really easy. You need to try to get extra credit!! But He was nice personally.
He is a very nice person, it concerns me when people try to take advantage of his generosity. As far as his class goes, its easy mostly because of the inordinate amount of extra credit he offers. Do as much of that as possible. Tests aren't too difficult either. Easy class to take if you need to take critical thinking
AHAHAHAHAHA!!! This class is Bueller... Bueller... the whole period. This is the first class where I almost collapsed from listening to him lecturing. There are methods to every class for a good grade. This class has its methods. Here's an example of what he writes on the board. ":) :( // kierkegaard"
He's a very nice guy, his class is very easy, he lost my essay and he gave me a 100/100 because of that. He's not very organized and lost many peoples' papers. Easy class, easy tests, lots of extra credit. Take this class.
I find him extremely overrated. He's an extremely nice and approachable person overall, but his teachings are far from being clear. Materials are complex but he failed to explain it clearly. Exams are difficult. Offers some extra credits. Take at your own risk.
If you are thinking about taking him please stop, run in the other direction, and find someone else. Disorganized and scattered don't begin to cover his issues. Long winded and rambling lectures. He makes no attemptto learn names. 2 hours seems like 10, he is unclear and scattered. Looks like he just rolled out of bed each class.
Very nice guy, though lectures are scattered, but very knowledgeable and interesting person if you cared to pick his brain. People do take advantage of his generosity. He does care for his students and very helpful, spends extra time after class if you need clarification on materials you don't understand.
As a lot of people have stated: He's not very organized. Despite this, it doesn't mean he's a bad teacher, it just means you have to care about your grade enough to review the concepts on your own and be proactive. His lectures seem quite long and somewhat repetitive. He is a pretty easy essay grader and may give you extra credit if you ask for it.
Easy grader and nice teacher. I've learned a lot from him. He is not really organized but he is smart and helpful. You don't want to miss his class because all of his lessons are very interesting and cannot be found in the textbooks. Highly recommend taking his class of critical thinking. You'll have another view about the world.
only one word: BEST. he is the best critical thinking teacher. he always thinks critically. he gives you lessons that you can't find anywhere else. moreover, he is a real easy grader. i got A+ in his class.
Mr. Hammerud is the most easiest and the best teacher ever. He is a great human being.I would love to take his class as many times i can.hes the best
The best? I think not. Easy? F yes. The things he teaches and the way he teaches them make your $$ and time a complete waste. Nothing taught in that class is useful. As for advice on how to succeed: push your limits. Don't be afraid to rub his tummy (metaphorically) when you need the points. And trust me, you need the points.
Ask for extra credit while in class as he tends to forget sometimes to give u. Do all extra credit. He may be scattered, forgets.. but he's nice. Got an A. Pls don't take advantage of him.
This class changed my lifestyle. I came in with no knowledge and left with enough history to learn keep learning this stuff in my free time. He also put me on the cutting edge, meaning, I left with knowledge of current philosophers, all of a sudden I'm on forums arguing philosophy, and being right about everything!
He is very interested in what he teaches but seems a bit scattered in his thoughts. I was very interested up until about the 8th week. Then it seemed to get very repetitive and monotonous. There are 2 1250 word essays a year and a lot of reading as homework that can be very difficult to comprehend. If you enjoy philosophy, recommended.
Assigns about 30 pages of reading each class out of the worst textbook ever. The textbook is a disorganized collection of excerpts of philosophical literature cut and pasted together. Hammerud is also extremely disorganized and loses your hw. Lectures are mandatory and unbearably monotonous. Quiz almost everyday on the reading.
Richard knows this class is an introductory course, and teaches it as such. You will have to read about 60-100 pages a week, and expects you to know basic philosophic terminology by the end of the term. He is a bit disorganized, but you can see he enjoys what he does and is ALWAYS ready to help. Hands down, I'd take him over again.
If he makes you use the Bullying for Brontasaurous book, don't bother getting it. There's a PDF for it online on google.
He's very unorganized and his lectures are very monotoned... He isn't very tech-savvy either, which makes it harder for the lectures since he bases it off on typing everything. The book he assigns you is very hard to understand and read because it's all a bunch of words with hardly any explanation, which is ridiculous considering its an intro course
If you are actually interested in philosophy, this is a great beginning class. Sure, he is a bit unclear with dates but he is more than willing to clarify. His lectures give great test info, very flexible, gives study guides,There are rarely tests, once in a while there was a ten pnt quiz to see if we have been reading. Textbook adds to grade.
You need to be in class to get the handouts that will help with the tests. Do not try to argue your point, even though it's a philosophy class only his opinion is right. If you can avoid this class with this teacher, do it. I wish I would have. You'll see your fellow students either falling asleep or with a look of confusion or irritation.
Prof. Hammerud is disorganized. He teaches mostly from the textbook, but has difficulty during lecture moving from one thought to another; he jumps around and often to unrelated topics. He also repeats lectures. Keep on him about HW and essay due dateshe loses track. Back up your homework. There's little in the way of debate or discussion.
I honestly feel like I have learned absolutely nothing by sitting in his class. My life was wasted. He wastes time by repeating redundant information, and tells you to "just practice" when you tell him you don't understand certain concepts. I have literally been bored to sleep in his class. This Easy A is not worth the frustration.
Hammerud's teaching could use improvement. He is extremely disorganized. He frequently could not recall whether or not he lectured on a subject. There were many days when we would get lectured on the exact same thing we were lectured on the day before. He would be better off making powerpoints of the material so the class can follow his lectures.
Disorganized yet awesome. Absent minded genius. His brain is always working at a very high and critical level. He is one of the best people you can meet. Help him, help you. Speak up If you have ideas on how he can be more effective at delivering his points. He only wants you to succeed. Figure him out. He is the best.
There are not many philosophy courses which really motivate you and drive you to really want to understand how the world works but this course was one of them. He takes the subject seriously and so some might be dissapointed to find that its an actual course which requires you to do all the reading or else you'll get screwed on the tests.
You must know ALL the content REALLY well if you want to pass the tests. Tests are very hard, very detailed. We read a lot of things (actually the material is amazing, interesting, challenging) and you must know all of it to get an A! If you want to be a lawyer or go into politics, take this class. Boring teacher, but AWESOME materials.
I'd like to retract my earlier statement in which I rated the class a 1,1,1. it's actually pretty hard to do well on tests but he gives lots of extra credit; do it all and you'll get an A - A+ . Attendance is "mandatory" but u can sign in and leave.
I had Hammerud last quarter. Hammerud was very nice, but sometimes disorganized. He gives you a lot of opportunities for extra credit, such as extra credit essays and extra credit for a notebook of 60 pages worth of notes based on his lectures. He is a respectable teacher, though his lectures are long. Pay attention in class.
HE really "knows" what he is talking about and able to to teach.
He is open minded and really knows what he teaches.
BORING class, but its worth it! Hammerud is extremely knowledgeable. If you are majoring in philosophy TAKE THIS CLASS. I have never taken a philosophy class prior to Hammerud so some things were difficult to understand; he teaches somewhat fast. Do the extra credit, it isn't difficult. The lectures are boring and monotone but the extra cred is ez
He's one I feel those professors who just talk nonstop about the lectures, and it's kind of hard to keep with his pace. He tends to give random extra credit quizzes, you'll do about 2 essays throughout the quarter, and every exam will have essay questions. Onestly I don't think anyone understands him. The class is always half empty. Boring class.
Great professor! 4 one pg. essays, 2 four pg. essays, 2 exams (multiple choice & short answer), gives extra credit opportunities, and you can turn in assignments late. Lectures can be difficult to follow at times and reading the philosopher's writings will be tedious. Hammerud will answer your questions, talk to you after class, and explain things
I don't understand some of the bad reviews! I think Mr. Hammerud is a great teacher. He's very knowledgeable and will open your eyes to other possibilities. He does give you homework but it's nothing that will make you pull your hair out. Sometimes he gives us no homework at all. He's easy going, calm, and very approachable.
People need to give him a chance! He's a great teacher and is very knowledgeable about philosophy and he genuinely cares about what you take away from his class. I think he's a great teacher and very fun when watching him teach! Cool guy!
He's a great teacher! He's very opinionated and has a strong sense of Philosophy. He opened my eyes to a number of things. He can be all over the place sometimes but other than that he's been pretty good. I would recommend him for phil
I personally think he is a great professor. A midterm and a final. Two 5 page essays, 2 MCQ quizzes. No homework at all. Take his class for an easy A. You can turn in your assignments a little late. Gives a lot of extra credit and you can redo your assignments if you don't get a good grade. He sometimes gets a bit disorganized but he's awesome.
Literary mastermind. 3 phd's. Logic. Philosophy. English literature. wow. Disorganized genius. Pick brain, take notes! He wants the best for you. Let his odd brilliance bless your brain game. If you find him hard to follow, tell him. Passion creates pace that may leave some in dust, so remind him, you're behind him, if slowing down is a must!
Loved this class and half wanted to change my major to Philosophy. Prof Hammerud makes sure to provide lots of examples to help grasp nebulous topics. I really enjoyed the puzzles he would give us for extra credit, definitely helped sharpen my critical thinking skills! 1 Midterm, 1 Final Paper(700 words), 4 Homework Papers(1 page double spaced)
He makes you actually understand Philosophy and look beyond reasons. He gives a study guide, so if you want to pass, do the work and you will pass as well as learn really cool stuff. I know that I know nothing - Socrates.
He's very engaged with the material and loves to challenge students in ways that won't affect grades. Participating in class is really worth it.
Very chill professor, 1 midterm, 2 papers, a final and that's it. He can be a little repetitive and scatterbrained when it comes to his lectures, but he explains the concepts very thoroughly. The lectures can be a little bit dull, but as long as you pay attention, read, and do the work you'll be fine
He's a good instructor overall. When you first come to his class he may sound like he's rambling on about random things, but if you truly pay attention he lectures about things that will be on the test. You have 1 midterm, 1 final, and 2 papers to do which is really easy if you show up to class. Class might not be everyone's cup of tea, but ez A.
Do the assigned reading! Every class is a lecture, but valuable. His study guide is a life saver. Has a hard time seeing you, so make sure to get his attention before asking something. Take your notes, you'll need them for work /final. There are only a few assignments for his class. Sends syllabus early to give students extra time to buy books
He is one of the best professors at De Anza and is very laidback. there is only one midterm and a final. for both midterm and final he will give a study guide for MCQ and will also give you the exact long questions/answers which are going to come and will ask you to choose wherever question you are going to write before hand. Please tike him. EasyA
By far he has been the most boring professor I've ever had in my life. His voice ? Low and monotonic. His criteria? Confusing and unclear. His assignments? Random and long. He was a cool and comprehensive teacher, ig. Wouldnt ever take retake this class. It was really hard to read his writing and he would always go off topic and confuse me.
Professor Hammerud was a pretty good teacher, but he did go off topic a lot. As long as you do the homework and read, itll be fine. His hand writting is super confusing so just ask him what youre confused about, he'll be more than happy to explain.
Decent professor, everything is up to you to figure out basically and his videos weren't really helpful at all. make sure you actually like philosophy before you take this class but honestly do the work and you'll pass.
Hes really interested in engaging with anyone who is there to learn. The in-class activities were very fun and the reading was really memorable and enjoyable. If you are engaging with the class at all, its a walk in the park, but there were also a lot of people complaining about poor grades when they put in no effort.
His lectures are not mandatory, but I highly encourage you to go because he explains and simplifies many of the concepts from the textbook. It is also useful for the exams. Some of his questions on his exams were not mentioned on the study guide so be prepared for that! Overall, he's super nice and helpful, and his class is easy if you put work!
Genuinely cares about his students and does his best to support! He couldn't figure out how to post full-length lectures (I learn mainly through reading so wasn't an issue, he might know now) but he holds office hours! Was understanding of the pandemic situation, he accepted late work and sent messages reassuring us that if we do the work we pass!
Although I took this class online, Dr. Hammerud seemed like a very nice, yet technically challenged man. He loves to send announcements! Weekly hw is almost nonexistent, just one or two quizzes a week. His midterm and final are super long though! Just the final alone is around 3300 words total. The rest of the quarter is pretty easy though!
He seems nice but his midterm and final are ridiculously hard. Everyone basically failed it with the average score of an F. He does not curve anything which is why this was probably the hardest class Ive taken yet. Critical thinking is very complex and the last chapters are a nightmare. If you dont do everything he says youll probably not pass
He seems knowledgeable about the course material, but has trouble breaking it down. As a result, his exams and assignments are more difficult than what it should be. He will help you pass the course if you are having trouble, but you won't succeed in his class unless you put in a lot of time to study for it.
He is really kind and tries to help his students as what I've heard as well as read about. However when I took his class it's really hard to understand the material and he's a tough grader as well, his quizzes might be okay to take as its easier than his other assignments at least. But his tests and essays are pretty hard and he grades hard as well
Professor Hammerud gave way too many assignments for an Intro level community college course. There was roughly 5 quizzes and and about 12 hours of interviews to watch/ listen to weekly. During midterms and finals he assigned a mid term with 6 essay questions, expecting one page per question as well as an essay, both due same day.
Several hours of content to read and watch every week and multiple quizzes per week. Make a discord server and pray to your classmates.
Overall he is a good professor but just watch out for the midterms and final
Loads of interviews, 5 quizzes, and 2 essays are due including midterm essays. Felt overwhelmed; lectures lacked depth on thinkers. Abrupt transitions made it hard to connect and grasp complex ideas. Need a more relaxed, deeper vibe with discussions. Would not recommend online for Philosophy majors.
There is no way you can watch everything he assigned in the time frame he gives. Got baited by the 4/5 Rate my Professors review if you have to take Phil01, take any other professors do not take this teacher DON'T WALK AWAY RUN! Within a few months of the Midterm, he gave out 37 Quizzes, 2 Essays, and a mid-term.
insane amount of reading and videos and lecture recordings. super boring lectures. thankfully you can get by without doing any of it and cheating
This class is like being married you say sorry for unexplainable reasons. Most of the writing assignments are 1500 words on some guy with flawed logic. Imagine trying to come up with something somewhat coherent to turn in for some topic that does even make sense. Otherwise, this class is light just chat everything he doesn't label any documents gl.
Professor Hammerud's class is interesting but requires time. Expect 5–7 quizzes weekly, long videos, and lots of reading. Some questions repeat or are searchable, which helps. The professor is chill and open to emails if you need help or extra credit, but the class can feel disorganized. Not ideal if you're busy or prefer structure.
Before you take his class, check his YouTube channel. One political video in particular raises serious concerns about his judgment and abilities. Now, Richard—why would anyone from the Bay pay to learn from you? A Bakersfield Republican is not someone who can foster inclusive dialogue and guide students in developing strong reasoning skills.
I believe Professor Hammerud is a good lecturer. Yes. It's true, he assigned lots of videos of interviews and lectures for students to watch, but then again, I took the class during summer session, so it's super fast. I think he is fair in his grading, and he gave students plenty of opportunities to retake the quizzes. I learn a lot.
