Really made the material interesting, great stories, excellent sense of humour.

Makes things interesting, very good sense of humour and stories, knows his stuff

Very funny and approachable. Lots of little quizzes, so attendance is essential. Fair marker.
Serious but lighthearted and takes no guff. Thank God!!!
Hilarious!! He makes you actually enjoy reading sagas-very hard job. Reading quizzes ensure attendance and participation.
A great prof. Very funny, and makes you want to read Chaucer.
I did not take a class but he provided me with a some of his spare time, and heaps of recommeded reading(Sagas!). If this is any indication of his class mannerisms this prof. is truely exceptional.
GREAT TEACHER....GREAT STORIES...DEFINATELY KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT....REALLY FUNNY
His class is the reason I woke up in the morning.
four words: "insane in the membrane"
Condescending to students, but in an enjoyable way. A master of irony. A kind person whose classes can be difficult, but are worthwhile if you can cut it (I couldn't, but I'm a notorious slacker).
He is the one prof that will stand out in my mind 20 years from now. Introduced me to a new level of English that I had no idea existed. He will make you a better student. Also, will grade good if you put the work in. Funniest man alive!
Condescending as hell, but I dig that. Easy to get a good mark (I had > 85%) if you put in the work.
Don't believe these people. It's not hard work that he likes. He suggests that you buy him a bottle.
Best Prof ever! Cares about his students and is very funny. If you show a slight interest he'll love you and a good grade will follow! Definitely get into his class!
He made Chaucer in the summer fun. Funniest prof ever.

Awesome Teacher, always ready to help you when you need it. Very funny man!

Brilliant professor, very well organized. Friendly funny, realistic expectations from students. A bit difficult to nail down after class.
I got really excellent marks in this class - only real complaint: he forgot to tell us about our term paper until REALLY late in the year. He is (as said) condescending, but in a good way. The sarcasm got a little old by the end of the year, but I ultimately enjoyed the class and still chat with him when we meet in teh halls.
Great Professor!
I had trouble getting used to university essays but he was a fair marker. He covered the material very well and I learned alot. We read alot of novels but they were all interesting and unique. He was very funny and was always very prepared for class. I never missed a class and that's saying alot for me!
I adore this man, he is so entertaining and witty. I learned so much from him, both about English and about life. Really helpful and easy to contact (he even gave us his home and cell phone #!) Essays aren't too difficult and the topics are interesting. My fav prof!
Sarcastic, funny, witty, and intellifent. One of the easier markers in english 110 (he said it himself!) but doesn't just hand out easy marks either. Essay topics are interesting, and if you come to class and read what you're supposed to, you'll do well on reading quizzes and the christmas quiz. Take this class if you need english 110!!
A decent professor. He's a nice guy and class is interesting while still being challenging. I learned a lot about tying texts together, since we had so many to work with in the class. I would take another class from him.
His lectures were thought-provoking and enjoyable. He gave plenty of simple reading quizzes. The three essays were on very interesting material. He's a great man willing to assist the students, and is available outside of class regularly. He's definitely worth taking another class from. Take English from him!
Richard Harris was an awesome prof! Though class was dull at times (what english class isn't?) it was ridiculously easy. He is a very easy marker and is always willing to help his students. There were only two exams in the course and they were both far from difficult. If you put in any effort at all you can easily pull off an A in his class.
Richard seemed difficult at first, but once you got settled and understood what he was looking for he was a good teacher. He was very approachable and very understanding if you had a problem. After taking english 110 from him i would recommend it.
Prof. Harris is hilarious and super intelligent. He tries to get his students to look past the literature and understand what the author can offer them in life. He MADE first year for me and I recommend him to anyone and everyone at the UofS 2006 is supposed to be his last year
he's really funny and gives people the opportunity to get good marks by having lots of smaller assignments, i hate english but enjoyed his class
Unlike most english classes, he teaches good material. The books he chooses are usually pretty good, although sometimes obscure. But, the mark he gives you is entirely dependent on four essays on poems and the final exam, and a completely useless last report to boost it. Annoyingly, he never has a single essay about the reading material done
I am not an English lover, but this guy... If you have the opportunity of getting into his Section - TAKE IT. So awesome. He's the funniest teacher I've ever had. He makes the content interesting and appealing to everyone.
Mr. Harris is an amazing professor - absolutely hilarious, brilliant, and though condescending at times, still considerate and very approachable. I looked forward to class, and seemed to learn more about life and relationships than about most other topics -- many of Mr. Harris' insights are still 'whirring' in my mind.
Don't forget your magnifying glasses. You'll need them to read the class handouts! He gives fair grades. Reading material wasn't my style, but he made it quite interesting. Lit was mostly about monsters, heroes, etc. Put in effort and you can achieve a decent grade for English. Reading quizzes are key. Approachable prof and very willing to help.
Absolutely amazing. That describes Mr. Harris as an english prof. He's funny, witty, interested, intelligent, and helpful - pretty much everything you could ask for in a professor. He can make anything interesting!

Without a doubt my favorite professor. He is very entertaining... incredibly ironic and helps you to learn a lot about english and life in general. Overall very entertaining and a fair marker. I stongly encourage taking his class if he is still teaching
the BEST prof i had in my first year. very interesting lectures. i am taking more english classes with him even though prior to his class i had no interest in english. he is a descent marker and anyone can get at least high 70's in his class if you put in the effort. he is also not afraid to hand out 90's either so don't worry you genius kids.
Great class, great professor. As someone already pointed out, sagas are long and life is short.
Professor Harris was a joy to learn from. He made learning fun! He gave students nicknames, and called us all his "children". He was able to back up his knowledge with stories of living in Iceland (we read some Icelandic Saga's).
If you are a can lit time person, dont bother with this guy.
You can't help but love him
Wonderful teacher; wonderful human being!
Mr Harris is a wonderful man, who really seems to enjoy modeling a variety of ties and suits for us. If you show up to class and read the books you'll do fine. His Reading Quizzes often ask for small details, but he is an enthusiastic prof. And he's always willing to help you understand a concept. It's not an easy class, but I very much enjoyed it.
The class was overall fair. Four essays and a term paper. A lot of reading required, followed by reading quizes. If you do the work, it's not hard to get a decent mark. If you're in first year, be prepared to be one of his 'little boys and girls'.
He's absolutely fabulous.
Mr. Harris is a great first year English teacher, and a joy to take 100 level classes from. However, do not take his upper year classes as an elective, unless you have nothing else to do with your time and don't mind doing impossible assignments.
He made the subject, Old English, easy and interesting. What a great guy!
The lectures are very boring especially in a night class situation- be prepared to be treated like a child. Reading test every week in night class! makes you read the book, and then re-reads it in class. Take the class and read the works you will do fine- consider yourself warned about the lectures
High standards bring out your best. A warning to mouth-breathers: some profs hold lazy minds accountable. It's pearls before swine if you aren't charmed by his biting wit, refreshing candor, spirit of collegiality, and stellar wardrobe. Harris tends a precious light in this dark age of neglected culture, wisdom, and history. Also, he loves scotch!
Simply the best teacher I English teacher I ever had. If your not serious about school don't take this class because he will call you on it! Yet, I learned a lot from him and really loved it. He also marks easy for an English class!
Mr. Harris is an amazing teacher. The workload is intense, but then it is for any English class. He is a fair marker and very approachable for students that show an interest and want to do well. He also has an amazing sense of humour and great insight into human nature - I encourage anyone to take a class with him if they have the opportunity!
Very, very hard teacher. Endlessly entertaining but demands respect for him, his subject, and each other. If you're a keener, you'll love him forever because he has enormous wit and is obviously fascinated by life. If you're looking for a free ride, you'd have an easier time battling Odin himself.
Worst class ever. Terrible marker and extremely offensive.
Amazing English prof! Amazing stories about where he's been in life and awesome crude jokes to lighten the mood a bit. He gives you the marks you deserve:)
He's cute.
He is one of my favourite teachers. Awesome man, interesting, and clear in what he expects. If you take English from anyone take it from him.
Great Prof. You'll never regret taking his class.
This prof is likely not going to fail you for anything unless you are cheating - but don't expect a good mark without putting in a lot of effort. You can't just breeze through his classes and get an 80+. I so recommend his classes still, because he's got a very different and exciting set of interests that he shares with his students.
Awsome
Absolutely loved Mr. Harris! Not only did he manage to make old Icelandic stories bearable, but he is also absolutely hilarious! His inappropriate jokes really lightened the mood! By far my favorite prof at university! Very sharp dresser as well!
His lectures were entertaining. Class requires a massive amount of work. If you aren't interested in English stay away, if you are I am sure you will have a blast.
A scent of ambrosia follows this pulchritudinous man. He is a paragon of erudite, fecund with enlightening scintillation.
His lectures were okay. Class requires a huge amount of work
Mr. Harris' lectures are hilarious and engaging. He is easily the most witty and interesting man I have ever met! Understands that the modern student finds some of his content dry and does his best to make it interesting. Will give you a very high mark (90+) if you work for it! TAKE HIS CLASSES.
Harris is a great prof! I do not like english and just had to take the course for an eng credit but he made it interesting. Plus he is very humorous! Heavy course load, multiple essays and a lot of books to read. If you don't have a full course load or enjoy english, you should definitely take his english class!!!
I went into this class (Old English) having previously taken Old Icelandic from him. An extremely intellectual man, humourous, expects lots of easy work, and is a snappy dresser. Expect to read and reread the readings for midterm and final (never forget). Plus, if you get on his good side, you get to party at his house in Heorot!
Richard Harris. Great prof. Inspirational. Always entertaining. Great laugh. His class was very interesting but requires work and is all memorization. Would take another class from him and love it. Great guy who throws great parties hahaha. Great guy and love the pink suit!!!
Mr. Harris is love, Mr. Harris is life! One of the best prof I have so far. If you are serious with your works then he will give you a great grade. There are a lot of reading but that's what English class for. Amazing dresser, I absolutely love his pink suit! I can't wait to the end of the class to leave some feedbacks, I must do it now! Love him
He was inspirational. There were a lot more readings and papers compared to other introductory English classes, but it was worth the work. I learned how to write properly and think more critically in his class. Bonus: he tells lots of stories about his adventures around the world.
He picks on students, and loves to waste time. But when a student "wastes" time if they stand up to run to the washroom, he snobbishly declares that while you're away, he won't continue lecture. Then he'll sit and stare at everyone until you return. His exam will not be possible to study for. Read the 9 books or risk failing the quizzes & the exam.
One of the best Proffs here. A truly brilliant man - he is quite eccentric which must be remembered (his love of Pink clothing is a clear warning) but he will definitely do a fine job keeping you engaged and he knows his subject amazingly well. His parties are a real treat too!
How regrettable would it be to go through university without taking a class with Mr. Harris! Everyone should take Old English with him. He makes university a brighter place.
He's the bomb-diggity. This class prepared me for the real world.
Lots of quizzes and assignments but they are straightforward and quite doable if you attend class. Prof. Harris has a very dry sense of humour but he's hilarious as long as you're not a delicate flower. He's very knowledgeable about his subject, and Fun With Old English was actually fun. I'll never forget!
I've never had a better professor.
One of the most engaging professors and classes offered at the U of S. I didn't receive the grade I would have liked, however I found him and the class so fascinating I have zero regrets taking it. He frequently tells very interesting and provocative stories of his world travels to keep the class engaging and grounded.
Mr Harris' knowledge, experience and wisdom is will knock your socks off. He is a teacher of life. If you have the chance, please take one of his courses, you will not regret it.
He doesnt tell you what is important every lecture makes absolutely no sense and doesnt teach anything on how to improve writing
Worst prof I've ever had. Lectures are a total waste of time. Like LITERALLY they apply to nothing in the class. He also thinks we're somehow entitled to come to class just because he is there too. Sends class emails about people skipping like it's grade school. Treats us like kids. Essays are super easy, and you'll do fine if you read the books.
So of the lecture material will have you shaking your head in confusion
He's super knowledgeable, funny, and interesting! There are reading quizzes (almost) every week, so read the books. I got 83% on all my essays which is what I often got in highschool LA, so he's a good marker. His lectures are unique and fun to be in. I was not a fan of the discussion groups, but mostly because I hate talking in front of the class.
Mr. Harris is a great prof. He makes the lectures as interesting and engaging as possible will lots of jokes and personal, yet applicable, stories. If you read the material (or read the sparknotes version in many cases) you will ace the reading quizzes. The essays are fairly easy too. You will get a good mark and still enjoy the class.
Personally, I really enjoyed his class, Mr. Harris is a very knowledgeable person and teacher. His teaching style is very unique because he uses personal stories intertwine with the books you read in class. Attendance is not mandatory as of marks but if you do not attend you will not know what is happening in class the next day.
Great guy, likes to torch the class lots
It was a pleasure to have Mr. Harris as a professor. He was able to turn dry material into an interesting topic for the class to discuss.
At first I was shocked at first to meet this man due to his interesting behavior, but after attending enough classes Mr. Harris is a unique teacher. Yes a large portion of the items he teaches I find personally boring, but the facts this man knows along with his memorable performances in many classes. Overall, recommend taking a class with him.
I was very shocked by his personality but a very interesting and hilarious man. Fair marker. Interesting lectures. Would recommend taking one of his classes.
Dr. Harris keeps it real. He is a very interesting person which helped keep the class interesting throughout the course. He is very reasonable when it comes to marking papers, and I would definitely recommend reading the books because there are quizzes and discussion sessions on them (and they're super good books!).
I have never seen such a bizarre class. Grade did not come from knowing class content but on quizzes where only character names and their spelling mattered. Most of the class failed for this reason. He is very vulgar and asked for a payout on the first day of class and belittled us all throughout the term for being stupid and poor.
Mr. Harris is a pretty unique guy. He has lot's of funny stories and jokes up his sleeve, so get ready to listen in his class. Overall, a really good and underrated prof. Had a lot of fun in ENG110 with him. His quizzes were not hard, and the essays weren't brutal either. Cool Guy.
Really interesting class with an interesting prof. Expects you to do the work but the work is reasonable. Translations can get tedious but it's still a light course load given there wasnt any essays. Fair grader - put any reasonable amount of effort in and you'll do well. Super attentive to student feedback if you have to give it to him.
Mr. Harris is a great prof. I really enjoyed taking first year english with him. There are a lot of quizzes but if you read the material you will be fine. He also relates what you learn in the class to his own personal stories which makes it more interesting. Overall he was a super nice guy and always there when you needed help!
I withdrew because I wasn't a fan of the course itself, HOWEVER, Mr. Harris is very kind and has the greatest sense of humour. I hope I get the chance to have him as my prof before finishing school.
Best prof Ive ever had. Sad I never physically got to be in his class (COVID) but his emails absolutely make my day. Hes funny, understanding, clear, and had a great variety of literature in my class.
Professor Harris is an absolutely dear old man who genuinely cares for students and clearly has loads of knowledge on English material. I enjoyed the conversations I had with him and gives great feedback for papers. however its Dec 17th and we have not been given back our second essay, term paper, identification assignment and final exam.
He was good and made sure to put a lot of work into the switch online. Not super hard but there's some weird literature but good if you keep your mind open
He is good, some weird literature but if you keep your mind open, you will enjoy it.
Professor Harris has a great personality, very kind and very forgiving with deadlines during this COVID semester. Lots of required readings, weekly assignments on readings. He struggled to follow the syllabus, so due dates were a little unpredictable. Essay topics were a little unclear. Final exam was pretty fair. Would benefit from having a TA.
Mr. Harris is a sweet guy, he's very understanding when it comes to deadlines and gives good feedback. You do get mini assignments every week or so, but it's not hard. He knows the English literature very well, and he is more than welcome to help you if you are struggling. However some of his essays doesn't really give an outline which is hard.
I absolutely loved Mr. Harris. He was very understanding when it came too late assignments (despite what the syllabus says), so as long as you let him know, he'll work with you to make accommodations. He tries hard to make the online lectures as humorous and interesting as he can without making them too lengthy. 10/10 would recommend his class.
Very nice and kind. If you have any problems he would always try and help out, any way that he could. Just a sweet little old man. Made learning fun. Gave examples that relate to real life
Richard Harris was demeaning and rude to all of his students. He went off track in almost every class and tended to go on rants about his political beliefs, which are not politically correct. He gave the class hardly any information regarding the way he would grade us and all of his marks seemed to contradict one another. I would avoid him.
Professor Harris is a very sarcastic man. He is really old school and assigns an extreme amount of readings. The only good thing about him is he doesn't care about deadlines and when you get it in is when you get it in with no late marks deducted. His classes are super boring and you never know what is important in his lecture. Don't recommend!
Professor Harris is easily my favorite Professor in my four years on Campus. He cares about his students, is actually hilarious and teaches in a style and manner of an era gone too soon. He marks very fair and gives good feedback.
Mr. Harris was a great teacher. His lectures were good and I liked hearing his stories. He is very knowledgeable on the topics he teaches so that makes them interesting. He is very caring and understanding with his students. He is not strict on deadlines which is nice. I would recommend people to take his classes!
I highly recommend taking a class with Mr. Harris. He is very understanding and kind. He gives great feedback on assignments and his late policy is also very flexible. It's a shame that once we returned to in-person learning, there were fewer students in attendance and you could tell that he was a little disappointed.
A lot of books to read, but lectures were interesting, he marks fairly, he is flexible on deadlines, and is very entertaining and knowledgeable. Would recommend!
I'm astonished at the number of positive reviews Harris has. He was disorganized, callous, expected perfection and berated you if you couldn't grasp the concept. I had to teach the course to myself because his lectures are nothing but irrelevant rambling and he would never elaborate on the material even when asked. Avoid him at all costs.
As a person he is nice, but as a teacher he is not very good. He gives us essay assignments but does not give enough information on what we are supposed to do and when you email him asking for more information, he tells us to re-read the assignment again. He does not put your grades on CANVAS which is extremely unprofessional and stressful.
Oh, Richard!! Mr.Harris is a nice guy that does not mean he is a nice professor. For a first-year class, this is far too difficult. We read at least 10 books this semester and wrote at least one reading quiz a week sometimes two. He would give us essays, not explain them, and then proceed to get mad at us when we had to ask for help. not fun at all
Fantastic! Prof Harris is understanding and accommodating with due dates. You will have to read quite a bit, but this is because he really believes in the perspective-changing nature of these novels and the wisdom that can be gained from them. His lectures are entertaining, humorous, and at times profound. You will only get as much as you put in.
Richard is a great person, but a not good professor. His lectures are 90% nonsense that do not translate into the tests at all. Tons of reading on your own time. At least one quiz a week. Quizzes are fill in the blank from exact novel quotes. A student with a full course load does not have time to do all the work he assigns. Steer clear.
He gave weekly quizzes on the novels we were reading, but lectured about the book after the quiz. This made it very hard to get a good grade, especially because the books we read were very confusing and some were in old English. We never had any grade updates and did not receive our marks from the term paper and final. Our final grades seemed made up
Mr. Harris was the best university professor I ever had. His class was very engaging, and his wit made every lecture so enjoyable. The gothic literature we studied was full of symbolism and has become one of my favorite genres. Mr. Harris is so wise and genuinely fond of teaching and literature. Very inspiring and fosters critical thought!
