He doesn't even know what he is talking about. He has gotten in class clicker questions wrong several times. Does not prepare you for the exam as well as other professors.

A great guy. He really tries very hard at what he does and it made it worth going to class early in the morning. The material for the class is relatively elementary and he tries VERY hard to make it fun by adding comics and jokes to his lecture. A very nice guy to talk to and quite educated in chemistry. I'd definitely give him a shot, I liked him.
He is a great dude, and is always available to help, but even though he tries super hard, his lectures are not the best. He lacks the confidence to lead a class. But use his office hours, he is very helpful one-on-one.
Has some good demoenstrations in class, to keep you awake, but he has a low level of confidence in what he is teaching. If I had a choice I would of taken Kautz or Powers. This is because Dr. Hartung doesn't as good of job preparing you for the test. Very nice guy though.
Did cool experiments often, tries hard, I used his office hours a few times and that was helpful. Print off the slides/notes before class! During Chemjam sessions before tests, I liked Prof Kautz's style better, but it was helpful to go to both sessions because they're so different.
He was the worst teacher I have ever had. I had problems with my grades and he wouldn't fix them. He also was rude when I went to his office hours. Definately if you have the choice, take it with Dr. Kautz. I felt anyone could have taught me more then Dr. Hartung.
He's a good teacher. He uses powerpoints which are nice makes it easy to study and follow along.
I really liked Dr. Hartung. He was a fun, extremely nice guy who loved to teach chemistry. If you don't understand something, just read the sections in the book. They are the EXACT same concepts but just explains it slower and with more detail.
Stay up with the material!
I learned a lot from Hartung. I thought he taught the concepts well and he used fun examples every once in a while to keep us interested. He was an all-around nice guy and helpful when students needed clarification.
Dr. Hartung is a decent professor. He moves through the material fairly quickly, which is sometimes difficult to follow. However, working the practice problems helps cement the material.
Professor Hartung knows his stuff. However,he is not good at explaining things. If I had not known a lot of the material before coming to class, I would not have gotten the good grade I did. But if you do have questions, he is very nice and willing to help.
Crazy 2 much hmwk easily pissed off does not lik answering. ?s
Dr. Hartung is a great professor, who is always willing you help you! He wants his students to succeed. He is a very nice guy, who knows lots of chemistry!
He is a very nice guy who always encourages students to ask for help. I think he prepared the class very well for tests. He did go through concepts and problems very quickly in lecture, but if you take the initiative to look over the problems after lecture and re work them on your own, you'll be fine.
Awesome guy! I was scared when I'd heard some people say he sucks but the truth is he gives you EVERYTHING you need to succeed. He covered all the topics very well for a basic class like Chem 109. I would recommend him if you are a better Powerpoint learner.
His lectures are clear and he gives you the powerpoints with blanks to fill in. The class itself is hard, but his lectures will give you what you need.
Hate this class. Worst class I've taken. The T.A. is an immensely better teacher than him.
Great professor, answered questions, cares about students, did fun experiments in class. Definitely recommended him. Had the highest class average on every exam.
very easy to follow give great notes
Really hard class. He is a nice guy though, very helpful if you ask for help, and he included cool experiments in class. The class was a lot of work though.
Awesome professor, great guy. Wish I could have him for upper level chemistry. Does a ton of practice questions... Comes in handy for exam
Prof. Hartung was ok. However I learn better by listening/ observing which is hard to do for his class because you have fill in the blank power points and he goes fast. His notes also make the subject matter seem harder than what it really is. But he is helpful and his examples are great references. I found it easier to skim the book before class.
I took CHEM 109 and 110 with Dr. Hartung. He provides fill in the blank notes that make it easy to follow along. He also does a lot of practice questions that are really helpful on the exams. However, I do not recommend going to his exam review sessions. I found that going to Dr. Kautz's reviews were more helpful.
Great teacher. He does go very quickly during class, but he provides a lot of examples and explains them in depth. He is very helpful and always answers questions.
Very good professor. But, he does go very fast in Lecture, so be prepared. Otherwise, he loves to help his students and wants everybody to do well in understanding the material.
Low key chillest prof in the whole Chem department.
SO chill, and so smart. He's great.
Boring in class. Not clear at times. Helpful if you visit person to person.
Lectures are boring.. he is extremely monotone. Makes it hard to pay attention.
Goes through lecture really quick. It is hard to keep up. Test are nothing like practice tests, they are much harder.
Dr. Hartung is a very good guy that seems very intelligent, but his effectiveness at teaching is questionable. He would rush through PowerPoint slides and read directly of of them. Better to teach yourself with book. Great guy, sub-par professor.
He goes too fast for you to understand and still take notes.
He ignores questions, goes through lectures too fast, and is kinda rude. Good guy, just not a good teacher. Belongs in a lab. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
I've asked him for help multiple times all of which he ignored me. He does not clarify his examples during class, and he seems like he does not want to be there. In fact, he's outright said he was only teaching because he lost his job at a research institute. He doesn't care about his students and is not an effective teacher.
Felt bad for him because he seemed a little nervous, but he didn't really teach at all. Went too fast, only did problems out of the book, couldn't explain things.
Hartung reads off of powerpoints for the lectures, so the it is extremely boring. Wouldn't recommend taking him if you care about your grade because his lecture won't help.
Print the powerpoints off and then follow along in class and you'll be fine. The tests can be tough, but study more than the night prior and you'll do just fine (the class average isn't supposed to be an A anyways). Plenty of opportunity to boost grade beyond tests. Not an incredibly difficult class in my opinion.
Class is pretty boring. He reads off a powerpoint and will work a lot of examples in a monotone voice. He also messed up how my lab grade was entered in blackboard and didn't seem too interested in fixing it. If you're average or struggle with chemistry, get a different professor. I got a good grade only because it comes naturally to me.
Hartung knows his stuff but does not have the ability to teach it or inspire kids while doing so. His lectures seem awkward and really rushed. Paying attention to him can be hard. I liked chem in high school, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to pull off an A-. As long as you study about a week in advance for tests, you'll be okay.
Hartung is a really nice guy and very helpful if you go to his office hours. However his lectures are not very helpful. He just reads from the powerpoint and goes through the material very quickly. He teaches new concepts like a summary. Reading the book is essential to passing the class and understanding new concepts.
His lectures were very helpful and they went right along with the class, he played 80's music before class a good portion of the time which was kind of cool.
I thought Dr. Hurtung did a really nice job of teaching the class. He was clear, helpful, and even funny at times.
The man doesn't know how to teach. if you like to hand write your notes like i do you might as well drop the class. he reads off of a power point which pretty much requires you to bring your laptop to class. he goes way to quickly on the stuff that is on the test and spends most of the time on stuff that is obvious for people that are in chem 110
Worst teacher Ive ever had at UNL
Dr. Hartung supervises the Organic Chemistry labs. The CHEM253 lab was infuriatingly difficult. It was the first C I've ever received in college. The homework is stupidly difficult. What really confuses me is how I received a B+ in the organic chemistry lecture, but a C+ in the lab; it makes no sense! I'm just glad the lab is only worth 1 credit.
I have read all of these opinions about Hartung, but I must say I have had a really great experience with him in both general and organic chemistry lecture AND lab. I can understand what is being said negatively, but the questions that he goes over in class are EXACTLY what you will see on the tests. GO TO CLASS and he works through them all.
The way he does lecture notes it not to my taste. He provides powerpoints with blanks that you have to fill in as he goes over them in class. I found myself just trying to figure out what word I needed instead of learning. Also, he will cover a topic and then immediately have a click question over it. Not fun if you aren't learning as you go
Hartung is the lab coordinator for CHEM 253. This is without a doubt the worst course I have taken. The homework he puts up quizzes you on content the TA's don't even know, and there are absolutely no resources one can use to obtain the right answers. Half the time the q's have literally no relation to what was done. Prepare to bleed points.
Literally awful. The questions written for the post lab quizzes are astronomically harder than the lab, prepare to miss 4 or 5 questions every time. Also, you can only miss around 50 points total all year and get an A. Most stressful and unnecessarily hard lab I have ever taken. Does not help in office hours. Sadly he is the only OChem coordinator
It was a very structured 100 level course, and he was about as average as you can get.
He is honestly one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He truly does not care about his student's success.
He is definitely smart, however, sometimes he can be not clear during lectures. Lectures are powerpoint-based and you can print them off before class to fill in the blanks. Reading the book is a big help. Go to class for the clicker points and better understanding. Not the absolute worse, you have to put in the work to get the grade.
Seconding what others are saying, Organic lab is terrible. I completed orgo 1 lab (253) already and am currently taking orgo 2 lab. Hartung writes ridiculous lab quizzes and scores are inflated because people in greek life have the answers so they will never be fixed. Sapling assignments and writing out the entire lab every week is time consuming.
Questions are not able to be determined from course resources, sapling assignments are buggy, slow, and extremely difficult, and an insane amount of outside lab work is needed to do well. I literally spent more time on this 1 credit hour lab than two of my 3 credit hour lectures to get an A. TAs are the only thing that makes it doable.
He goes through lectures quickly, but gives you the PowerPoint to fill in so the pace is manageable. You will get through all the information before the test which is a huge help. He isn't too boring, but also not the most entertaining. He does have a sense of humor which does make the class a lot better.
I would give a 2.5 if I could. He's available outside of class and answers emails well, but he's a poor explainer of concepts in an understandable way and moves way too quickly. Attendance was taken with clickers, and the clicker questions can be hard. I never needed the textbook, but still had to pay $100 for the McGraw Hill service
I had him for chem 110, I liked that he gave power points with blanks, but if you were not in class there was no way to get the material covered. He couldn't always explain how he got an answer or why he used certain numbers. There were clicker points were asked right after learning the content. Don't expect help studying for the final.
Dr Hartung's baby is Organic Chem, and it shows during Chem110.
Richard Hartung was a very average professor. He was old and sweet. He taught the material with powerpoints very average guy
Dr. Hartung is definitely a nice, approachable professor. If you go talk to him one-on-one, he will explain concepts well. However, his lectures are dry and boring and if you ask him to clarify what he just did, he will simply repeat exactly what he just said. I would recommend Kautz.
Hartung was the typical lab professor. Its a tough class. Lots of course work to do outside of class. Lab reports and summaries are due every week. Hartung is definitely willing to help if you go and see him. Nice guy and very approachable.
Here's how to pass/excel in Chem 106: Homework: due every Thursday night. Find answers on quizlet. Cheat sheet: use this to write down practice exam and homework answers. Bring to exam. Lecture and recitation: show up to bump your grade with participation points. Lab: turn in your lab reports and you'll probably get an A. This will bump your grade.
Terrible class he can't teach but is a nice guy
Dr. Hartung is extremely kind and always accommodating. Labs take the full time and are 2x a week, and the reports themselves take several hours, so this class is a lot of work. But all in all, it wasn't that hard and the final was pretty simple. Hartung genuinely cares about his students and their success.
Nice guy. He played music before each 8:30am lab lecture. I struggled with a few things in his class: he squeezes a LOT of info into a 50 minute lecture, the lectures don't really help with lab quizzes, and he lectures too fast to write everything down. However, the lectures reflect the final, so still go! Record lectures if you want to get it all.
253 is not horrible in itself, but the prelab quizzes and Sapling assignments are extremely difficult. The weight of the lab reports does not line up with the effort they require. Dr. Hartung is generally pretty flexible and wants you to succeed, but you really need to be on top of your game. Missing only a few points will really affect your grade.
The class average for the final was a 55% and we did not even get a scale. It dropped most student's grades by over 10% which is absolutely ridiculous. THE FINAL SHOULD NOT DETERMINE A STUDENT'S FINAL GRADE IN THE CLASS.
Dr. Hartung is literally one of those scummy professors you hear about in movies and television. He makes you buy unessesary things he gets kickbacks on. The pre and postlab quizzes are on separate paid websites for example. Also, the grading in this course is abysmal. The scaling is off and the final is terrible. Love chemistry, hated this lab.
Get ready to be tested and quizzed on content that you have not learned. None of the required materials will help you in understanding the material, and because he doesn't care about pacing the lecture hasn't covered it either. He is basically just doing this for the money, considering there is nearly $200 in unnecessary material for 1 credit class
He was by far the worst professor I have ever had. He makes you do homework after every lab that has nothing to do with what you have learned during that lab. There is no one else you can take for Organic Chemistry lab but I hated having him.
Do NOT take this class with Dr. Hartung if you want to ever enjoy Chemistry ever again.
200 dollars worth of course material hes listed as an author on? Probably enough to tell you what kind of professor he is. 0/10 dont recommend.
Dr. Hartung is a kind man, but learning in his class is difficult. Without my prior knowledge from high school chemistry and resources from other professors, I would not have been able to succeed in this course. Instead of lecturing, he just reads off the PowerPoint and he also messes up during his examples a lot of the time, which is confusing.
Hartung is a very good lecturer who takes the time to show demonstations, work through practice problems, and answer questions.
All the supplemental materials are expensive, and this one credit lab took 9+ hours out of my life per week. The final at the end of the semester is worth 25% of the grade, which feels disproportionate to the amount of work put in throughout the semester. Also, graded quizzes had incorrect answers that were never addressed.
His quiz answers were incorrect and he made no attempts to correct them or even respond to my concerns. This lab is too expensive and it's only worth 1 credit and takes me 9 hours of work each week. Don't bother with the final, tanked my A+ that I worked hard for and it made no sense. He needs to rescale the grading scheme, but he won't bother.
For how much the lab manual that he wrote cost, you would think it would have clear instructions for every experiment. Not my experience.
This LAB took more effort than it should have. The lab manual instructions are horrendous, we had to basically make up the experiments ourselves because he didn't give anything close to complete instructions, at this point my name should be on that book just as much as his. Spell check would do wonders for this "author".
Never responded to emails, awful lab final designed for people to fail. His TAs were the worst. One didnt care at all about class and another was on his phone the whole lab and left us alone for almost 30 minutes.
All of the achieve assignments are on a quizlet. If you get a good TA, the class won't be as bad. Absolutely ridiculous that you have to pay for two different websites to do pre and post lab quizzes. Lab Final is extremely hard and not curved. It's a grade killer as the highest score in my class was an 82%..... it dropped my grade over 10%
The fact that you have to pay for two extra websites to do quizzes that could easily be transferred to canvas tells you everything you need to know. However, be prepared for a final that he gives you no way to study or prepare for, and be ready for it to wreck your grade. 0/10
253 is not bad if you have a good TA and thank god I did. First, all the achieve quiz answers can be found on quizlet and the pre quizzes are easy if you read the lab manual. In my experience the lab reports are graded easy. My advice would be to keep a good grade the whole semester so you can fail the final because you WILL fail it, guaranteed.
Dr. Hartung is a really nice, old guy. He clearly cares about what he's doing but doesn't do a great job getting it to his students. He often contradicts himself in lectures and when students try to ask questions, he doesn't do a great job of re-explaining them. He is not terrible, but definitely try to get Kautz or Molina if you can.
He was not a very good professor; our lecture slides did not cover the info we needed to know on the tests. Also, he gave us a final grade calculator excel sheet that was incorrect, but he did not tell us until after we took the final and got our grades. This resulted in me and many others not getting the grade he originally said we would get.
As long as you listen to the lecture and spend some time outside of class studying, you will pass his class. He's very approachable if you have questions.
Personally, Dr. Hartung was not my kind of professor. His lectures are very simple to follow, but he simply puts words on a screen without explaining the concepts. He never once told us to read the textbook, but you really should to understand. His lectures are long and not engaging at all. If you have the chance, take it with another professor.
Hartung is a decent professor but sometimes slips up in his examples which can be somewhat confusing. As long as you attend lecture and do the homework you should be good to go for the test.
I had trouble getting my grade at the end of the semester (calculation error) but luckily the Chemistry Department Chair noticed it before I retook the class. Hartung isn't the most interesting lecturer, but he does go through examples that are similar to the exams. My only issue was that it felt like he was reading off a script the whole lecture.
You could tell that he cared about what he was teaching, but he just reads from slides. You essentially have to teach yourself the material. He does post the slides later, but unless you read the textbook, it is harder to understand.
As an honor roll student at UNL with a high GPA, I admit that this class is disappointing. The pace is too fast, and the limited time for in-class participation hinders learning. The instructor doesn't provide guidance on which textbook pages to focus on, leading to reading through the entire material. I strongly advise against this class
I liked Richard's lecture times. He does fun demonstrations and he teaches well for the exam. Sometimes, his handwriting can be difficult to read.
Awful. His lectures focused on things we weren't tested on and didn't cover the things we needed to know. His handwriting is TERRIBLE! Especially because he uses this thick Sharpie for every example. He also did examples and got an answer, but then the answer he calculated previously on his lecture slides was different than the one he just calculated
Really nice guy and always willing to help, but does not always explain jumps in his work during lecture, which is worsened by the fact that he has scientifically developed the least readable handwriting known to man
Nice guy, but has the worst handwriting of all time. He makes jumps in his work and doesn't explain them while still getting incorrect answers. He is willing to help students, but he mainly just reads off the slides and is not super engaging. Not for me but would recommend to people who don't really care to learn.
Professor Hartung is a great lecturer. He does sometimes just read off the slides but he takes his time to go through each practice problem individually. At the end of each class, he is very accessible to ask questions and very understanding.
Professor Hartung is nice, and willing to help and answer your questions. If you email him, don't expect an email back. His handwriting is awful and he will sometimes mess up problems and make jumps throughout his work. If you don't go to class and do the clickers you will fail. If you semi pay attention and take the notes, you will pass.
He's fine, but his examples and lectures are quite a bit different than the tests
He's a nice and caring professor who does a decent job lecturing. His in class examples are useful for learning but aren't that similar to test questions because he doesn't write the tests. Overall, he's sufficient if you took chemistry in high school.
Professor Hartung can be hit-or-miss, but with the right approach, you can succeed. Attend lectures, do the homework, and supplement with resources like unstuck study - it helped me prepare for tests. The grading system can be tricky, so stay on top of it.
Forget about learning anything in lecture. He doesn't explain anything and you'll barely have time to fill out the slides so forget about taking actual notes. You're going to end up reading the textbook everyday anyways because that's the only way to understand what's going on in the class.
Hard to follow in class. Goes through notes so fast you don't have time to process and learn unless you go back on your own time. When solving problems he just copies the answer down, doesn't explain where numbers or anything comes from and jumps through problems with no explanation. He'd solve some problems in a way more complicated than need be.
Don't expect to actually learn during lectures. He goes through slides at the speed of light and doesn't really explain the material. To do even remotely well on the exams, you will have to teach yourself most of it. I would also suggest looking into getting a tutor.
Professor Hartung was very average. lecture was rarley exciting. 99% of the time you are talked at from ppt slides. If you understand chem this class won't be fun, but not bad. If you struggle with chem it could be tough. I didn't think he was great at answering questions or explaining example problems. Read the book before lecture to succeed.
He's very hard to understand in lecture; he went through problems but didn't explain what he was doing or why he was doing it. Didn't explain any of the content well at all, would not have been able to do well if not for recitation and lab TAs. Not a bad guy, just not a very good teacher.
