Gah! This prof is truly horrifying.He didn't really teach us anything of value that we could use in the class and than was upset at the bad grades we all recieved.He wasn't very helpful and most classes I wanted to cry out of boredom.

This prof failed my father in first year university and trust me I am not young-Extremely hard to stay focused in class and for first year english I was dissapointed in the teaching.
I had this guy a few years ago..and I am still mad about his class. He was terrible... and non-attractive...and insulted half of the class.
He got mad at the class because we couldn't read chaucer. He was a jerk who expected way too much.
This man is simply the worst prof that I've ever had! He doesn't know how to teach, can't stay on topic, is very unprofessional, and blindsides you with material you're not even sure that you covered for the final exam.
I loved this class, but probably wouldn't recommend it. Most people either love him or hate him. He's definitely interesting. He forced me to work hard, and I learned tons. I really like him.
Weird. Eccentric.. and not in an endearing way. Really disorganised teaching style. I have done well in every other english class in my life - except this one. Kinda mean, and looks like he may have a sweating problem or something.

i was so scared to take this class after reading everything and i have to say i was so surprised. this prof isn't bad at all. in fact, he's easy to laugh and talks of many interesting things. don't listen to these bad reviews cuz they are not true!

The class wasn't bad - the final was. I really think that he made that exam only so he could fail a large portion of the class. I think he is interesting, but I will never take another of his classes. I feel very sorry for his first year students right now.
I was warned to drop this class, but it was one of the best classes in my 4 years at university. He made me think, and challenged me to do my best work. I know I definitely improved. One warning: he seems to be the kind of guy you either love or hate. I loved him. At least it won't be boring!

The course syllabus wasn't very good, and he took too long in returning our first paper. Aside from that, there was little to complain about. The Final exam was tough, but not a nightmare. As for you people who were in 220, one of you told me that several of you were rude, hence your brutal final.
well, he had random moments of anger outburst during the class and then he would be the happy guy in the world... he is a walking perpexity waiting to happen... but he had very interesting lectures. He does however have to work on his discussion skills because I don't think he knows how to deal with people who disagree with him..
Wowee....**** maybe? All I'll remeber about this guy is the infamous purple velvet sweater and the horrible grade I ended up with due to our "different views". If you don't have the exact same view on something as this guy, don't even bother trying to convince him with yours!
He is brutal,he marks extremely hard,he has horrific mood swings class to class. He shows up late every class.He does not specify what anything is worst so your mark is random. He writes random words on the board just to show off his vocabulary
Yeha he is quite the character, grouchy, happy, grouchy, happy, with a tendency to talk about you if your happen to leave the room in the middle of class or he'll stare you down and comment on any type of your wordrobe he thinks is different or in appropriate (even if it's jeans, a t-shirt, and sandals). He's a hard one to please with your papers.
I was so disappointed with this class. I used to love English classes. HE is certifiably insane; he jumps from highs to lows, he swears at students who upset him, he has no inner monologue, he just blurts outs everything that in on his mind. He is impossible to write for, his assignments are totally vague, and the marks he gives are totally random

Well he has extreme mood swings. He said my class writes like a bunch of ****en sailors. He does have his nice moments but he also has alot of mean ones. If you dont agree with him you will do poorly!
I loved English until this man runied it for me forever. I seriously do not want to ever take another english class in my life! He talkes about nonsence and about how stupid the class is totally forgetting to teach anything important. Easily the worst prof at the U! I see my previous comment was removed, so I'll tone it down to a "RUN! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!" He's a lactating alki who's unprofessional, marks low, and blindsides you on the final! If you're registered in a class with him, drop it NOW!!!
I took a class from this man in 1981 (long before rateyourprofessor) and now that my son has started university, I have warned him to stay clear of this prof. As you can tell, the scars are still present!
HORRIBLE PROF. He doesn't tell you what he wants for his assignments, so you try your darn hardest and he RIPS it apart. He is mean, and just a generally horrible prof... i DO NOT reccomend him at all. He comes to class unprepared and then expects you to be 100% prepared when he's not. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM HIM.
I used to love english until I took this class. He insulted the entire class, and seemed terribly grouchy;however, he was funny a few times when he grandstanded against this know-it-all student who everyone hated more.
Very hard marker, expects you to put work into your assignments, is accessable for extra help. Sets the groundwork to make sure your essays are done properly so that your reports in other classes are done with excellence. If you want to occupy space then I suggest dropping this class
I took this class in 1989. He gave me the lowest mark of my university career (I went on to get 2 more degrees). Though I'm sure my essays left room for much improvement, I don't recall him being very clear on the assignments and I remember his rants about other students' shortcomings. There are far better profs who teach this course.
Easily distracted and hard to follow, avoid if you can.
He is the hardest marker I have ever had, but was willing to let me resubmit and improve my writing. Did not get the highest mark. Learned a lot! Classes were interesting; very global, which was kewl. Assignment criteria coud've been more specific, but appreciated the freedom. The final was 40%. Wish term work was worth more. *Do all ur reading!
DO NOT take a course from this prof. Extremely hard marker; very disorganized; treats class like children; insults class (he gave us a pop quiz and said we'd probably "disgrace" ourselves with it). Workload was too high: although there was only a few assignments, there was A LOT of reading. It was never clearly stated how much anything was worth.
I just came upon this site and realized that i should warn other students how awful this class was, and how miserable he is!
A friend at work told me about this site. I took classes from Prof. Harvey years ago, several in fact and did very well. Do the reading, do the work and stop whining.
He is a terrible prof, he talks about nothing and than it is on the final. He is the worst prof I have ever had. He mumbles on and on but the stuff he is mumbling about will be on your final. if you think your good at english, STILL DONT TAKE THIS CLASS ITS NOT WORTH IT!
The biggest mistake you could probably make is taking English with this man!! Avoid it at all possible cost if you want to get a good grade in english. I dont believe his marking habits are resonible and for someone who makes you write so many essay you'd think he might give you a little advice on how HE would like you to write.

babbles on all class about nothing. extremely boring. i dont have a clue how he marks his essays. one essay i did there was hardly any corrections on it and i got the same mark as my friend who he practically rewrote the essay for. find another prof
This prof was TERRIBLE! He loves to hear himself talk, cuts down students at every opportunity, and feels that no opinion save his own matters. By far the worst prof I have ever had. NEVER TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS MAN!!!

Let me explain an average class with this prof. He shows up, looking like he just crawled out of a dumpster. He then proceeds to the lesson. About 15-25 min. in he sidetracks HIMSELF, and starts mumbling and wandering around. When he starts talking normally again (10-25 min. later) he is on a completely irrelevant topic. Thats it. Learning ftw
Forget useless, this professor is nothing short of a disaster. For such a important class the board of education sure let this one slip through i am very disapointed, what a waste of tuition, i can't belive a prof like this still has a job! He has no want to HELP make students better! AVOID THIS SELF ABSORBED MAN AT ALL COSTS...not worth your time!

Rick Harvey is the worst English professor that I have ever had. He seems like a nice guy at first, but he marks unnecessarily hard and his critisms are mean and useless!!! His lectures are agonizingly boring and his final exam was more like a history exam!!! Thank goodness they curved the marks way up for the class that I took with him :|
Richard Harvey is the worst prof. that I ever had by far. He has no redeeming qualities aside from being a horrible teacher. He's nasty, rude, self absorbed, and always shows up to class late looking like he got hit by a truck. Seriously, stay away from him if you like English.
Has absolutely no interest in any student who isn't already passionate about English; he will, however, reward those who share his love for literature. You had best be prepared for this class if you wish to do well: the class average was 53%. A bit of a misanthrope, as well, but who could blame him?
He is very intelligent, but he marks hard and his final was ridiculous. He was far more concerned with the history of works than the literature itself and minute details that seemed useless and unimportant made up a large portion of the exam. The average in my clas was about 53%.

Should not be teaching at all. Obviously has no interest in teaching and hates first year students. He has the nerve to get mad at us for handing in essays late but takes forever to mark them and hand them back. Also, writes harsh words over students essays that are not only not helpful but inappropriate altogether.
I took his class in the Fall Semester of 2007. His class was informative, interesting, and I found him highly entertaining. If you do the work, ask for explanations of your marks, and pay attention in class, you'll do fairly well. This class also had the most notes I've taken more notes in this class than any other. Basically, pay attention.
He's tough, consistent, informative. Requires the student to follow the rules and protocol
