nice guy- loves english
great teacher, always willing to help if you see him after class- you have to do the work, a lot of writing.. great teacher- makes you think in soo many new ways
understandable, easy grader, thought provoking, nice, reasonable, and intelligent disclaimer: accent may be dangerous to your health
Able to find deep meaning in almost anything. Almost intimidatingly erudite. Still, he is so interested in what he is teaching it's hard not to find yourself getting interested as well. Overall has made me a better student.
REALLY REALLY nice guy, if you need help with anything he will be more then happy. Keep up with the readings, elaborate on your writtings, and use lots of quotes. Great guy though, really enthusiastic and down to earth.
TAKE HIM!! He's the nicest man ever! Very helpful! Loves what he does. Treats students as equals. I'd take him every semester if I could!
He is always willinging to help you out an give out extentions, however he always accuses people of plagrisim and trys to screw you over for it. also is a hard grader with in class assignments, and class is forever long

such a hottie and LOVE the accent! nice guy, learned a lot! highly recommended!
Do not take this class - it is far too much work and impossible to understand. Just say no.

Really caring professor. Show up to class, do the readings and work, and try your hardest and you will do well. Not an easy class, at all. However, he is ALWAYS will to help
His 10-page, single-spaced course expectation packet says it all. Expects a lot out of his students, but hes not impossible. Soooo intimidating at first, but he grows on you, and he can bust out some funny stuff at times. Go to class and pay attention!! You will learn enough just by doing that to do well on most of the writings.
19th C Irish lit n Politics... So much reading that i've become used to being an insomniac now~ Interesting stuff, he's just a little TOO enthused about the history of his homeland... Oh ps, his grading is insanely difficult
ALOT of reading... stupid response papers, and he grades really hard on them, for no reason. he tries to be interesting, but is generally unsuccessful. don't put yourself through it if you can find a better teacher.
nice guy, but is extremely tough grader. he is passionate about english and always asks for people on their ideas and thoughts. definately not an easy class though!
nice guy and always lets students share their ideas. he is a tough, yet fair, grader and demands a lot of effort be put forth into his assignments.
You'll never get my lucky charms! nor an a in this class very difficult but cool guy
nice guy, tough teacher---requires A LOT of time/work/stress for an A!
extremely passionate about English-- probably too much... hardest grader ever! insane workload. Never cancels class, same, predictable thing everyday... did i say he is a really hard grader!!!? dont expect to get an A
Nice guy. But hard grader! In class responses on the homework graded on a 1 to 10 scale. On average he gives a 6 or 7. You will never see a 10 in your life. Pointless home works. 3 essays but you have to do a lot prior to turning them in. one group project. Avoid taking him!
The English professor of my nightmares. Dry, humorless discussions of theory, theory, and more theory. Tries to make things interesting and relevant, but just can't break out of academese. If you love dry academics, he's great. If you're a writer-type with an ounce of wit or creativity, Haslam will be your Waterloo.
He's a really good guy. You cannot help but love his accents and turtlenecks. yes, he is challenging but in some courses you need that. I wrote no papers in high school so I took for him 2 semesters freshmen year and he really helped me in seeing the areas of my writing that needed improvement. You actually get something out of his class
I received several tens but its all in the way you write your essays. Follow his directions to the T and you should receive results. He loves to help you with everything so ask or email him as much as possible. Try not to be intimidated by the complexity of his work, his grading is tough but i got tens and As on mostly everything
Tough teacher, required at least 50-60 pages of reading inbetween classes. I wasn't a good reader before I took his class and boy did that change after that lone semester. I had more reading in that class alone than my other four classes. Pop writing quizes 75% of the time and you must be prepared with the reading at all times or you will fail
for an intro. course he expected A LOT while all my friends were doing the most SIMPLE assignments. take an easier teacher / RUN!
Nice guy, interesting accent. "Gargoyle Hunting Day" was the only chill day of this INTENSE course. Read ALL the books, take good notes on them, use lots of citations in your essays, and participate in class! Not an easy A.
Best discussions of any English class I've ever taken. He's willing to go out of his way to help you. You can tell he's passionate and that rubs off. The essays will force you to pick your brain apart and sometimes you'll just feel mentally drained, but it's worth it because the class itself is interesting.
Really nice guy, but a very intense course. If you're passionate about English and like analyzing interesting texts, this is the course for you. Very interesting accent too. Tons of reading between classes though. To put things in perspective, I got 5s on AP English exams both junior and senior year of high school, but this is still a tough class.
Lots of reading. Very intense grader.
The most time consuming and intense class I took freshman year. Must participate and think in depth about the books. Read 10 books (all of which related to the human mind) and wrote 2 challenging essays. Multiple pop reading checks and a written final exam. He is passionate about English and is a caring man. Prepare to work hard for your grade.
Ok Dr. Haslam is a tough teacher, but his class is manageable. There is a lot of reading and two essays, but if you do all the reading you will succeed. That allows for you to participate in class, which is important to your grade. If you work hard you can get an A, and doing so is so rewarding, trust me. Overall, he's a good teacher.
Definitely the hardest professor I took at SJU
Dr. Haslam is one of the most helpful professors I have ever had. He's incredibly knowledgeable and interested in the material he teaches, as well as an incredible writer - take any advice he gives you to heart! He is not easy; you have to work for your grade, but you'll leave his class knowing so much more than you knew before.
Dr. Haslam is a great and helpful professor but his class is very tough. There is a lot of reading every night and you will read 7 tough books. He gives pop quizzes on the reading so you always have to come to class but discussions are interesting. You will write 2 papers worth 50% of your grade and the final is hard but only counts for 10% of it.
If you enjoy reading & writing then take him because he is very passionate and knows what he is talking about. Assigns A TON of reading for each class and gives in-class responses that are like pop quizzes. Two big papers that are tough. If you're not a good writer & won't do the reading then I don't recommend him. He knows when you use Sparknotes.
Dr. Haslam is by far one of the smartest people I know. He is really great professor and will help you out with your paper. The man really tries his best to make the class interesting by playing some kind of music clip at the beginning of each class, then talk about how it relates to the class. He also shows many funny clips in class that help out.
Dr. Haslam's syllabus/assignments are very intimidating, however the class isn't that bad. All of the books he assigns are on sparknotes which helps (didn't read much). The prompts for his papers are confusing however he will explain the more in depth if you need help. He will raise your grade if he sees you trying. Pop quizzes are tough.
I loved Dr. Haslam's class. He is very helpful and understanding, but he is tough grader and gives in class responses which is an equivalent to a pop quiz. I would take him again.
He is very nice, but the class is extremely hard. We read eight books in one semester. His prompts are very long and confusing. Going to office hours does help, but make sure that you make an appointment.
Haslam is a great, passionate professor. Lots of reading, pop quizzes on the readings, which are extremely difficult. Two papers on interesting topics. One group presentation. The final was almost impossible. Haslam's choice of novels was eclectic and enjoyable. Loved how they were all connected. Overall, very intense, but learned a lot. 9/10
Nice professor who is passionate about English. Give lots of feedback to help you improve. No tests--but lots of in class responses (basically pop-quizzes) on out of class readings. Get ready to read. Tough grader. Not easy course but def manageable.
You read a lot of old drama and poetry, like medieval biblical plays. The speed of reading is extremely fast, a new book every other week. Very passionate about drama for some reason. Keeps track of how many times you raise your hand and comment every class.
Dr. Haslam is an all around great guy, however, his class can be quite tough. Books are read at a fast rate and it can be sometimes hard to keep up. But, he puts everything you need to be prepared for assignments on Blackboard. It's a lot of work so be prepared to "earn your grade" as he says. Not the easiest English class, but not too bad.
Dr. Haslam is one of the greatest professors you can take, while he is a tough grader, he gives you ample time to set up and improve essays by letting you make an outline and rough draft which he reads and provides amazing and procise feedback. The in class writings can be challenging but if you hold an adequate understanding you will be fine.
Dr. Haslam is super passionate and really tries to relate to students and make class relevant to college kids. However, the class is very fast paced and he gives challenging pop quizzes. Also, participation is HUGE in his class, so get ready to constantly be sharing your thoughts out loud to the class. You have to work hard to do well.
While he may get a bad rap, Richard Haslam is an amazing teacher. Probably the BEST english teacher I have ever had. But, be ready to work. Hes very tough on grading papers and has pop quizzes weekly so you must keep up with the readings. Overall, his class was extremely interesting and I would take him again.
Going into the final essay, I really thought i was going to produce garbage. However, as I sat down, despite hardly reading the texts, I found myself to be so prepared just from going to class. His methods are subtle and textbooks/readings are carefully selected. If you genuinely care about your education and wish to improve. Take this professor
Be ready to read over 40 pages of literature each night. He gives surprise in class reading responses that are impossible to finish in the amount of time given. He wants you to write 12 sentences in 20 minutes. His papers are impossible to put all the information he wants in the page limit given. I would highly NOT recommend taking him
Best English teacher Ive ever had. If youre looking for an easy A this isnt your guy. If youre looking to get something extra out of what is normally a basic core class, look no further.
Prof Haslam is a great guy. But his teaching style is "unique". I have him TH, and on tue he will assign 50+ pages of reading, and on th (over the weekend) he will literally assign 125+ pages of reading. He gives these random writing assignments which are impossible. His class is unnecessarily hard, and not relative to the other eng 102 sections.
I should give some credit to Dr. Haslam since he does have a disliked course to teach, Texts & Contexts, but overall I didn't enjoy him as a teacher. He was very dry and didn't smile once. We also weren't able to access our grades unless asking him personally, as he didn't believe in having them up to see.
Dr. Haslam honestly may be my favorite professor ive had so far!! i loved every second of his class and he truly inspired me to want to perform. he assigns two major papers but gives you the opportunity to submit an outline and a draft and gives you feedback to set you up for success, the only thing is, you need to submit all parts to get that A!!
Professor Haslam has been one of the best professors that I have had during my time at SJU. You have to earn your grade, but he is very accessible and is always willing to help. Overall if you get the chance I would highly recommend taking Professor Haslam, especially if you want to get the most out of your English course.
Professor Haslam is a nice guy, but definitely not the easiest professor. His classes are interesting IF you participated. The novels we read were all very good, but prepare for a TON of reading. Didn't upload grades which was annoying, and there's only 2 major essay grades and he's a tough grader, so it's a bit overwhelming, but a good class.
Dr. Haslam is a nice guy, but a very tough teacher. There is tons of reading due each class and sometimes the books are SO boring. Every lecture was just him asking us questions about the reading and he marks every time someone participates - and you do get graded heavily on it! Also he doesn't put grades into Canvas!
There are some pop quizzes but there are no wrong answers unless you make it clear you didn't read. He will mark down when you participate in class so be prepared to chime in at least once a class. My only critique is the amount of reading he gives can be a bit OD but if you read 60% of the reading for each night you should be fine.
Dr. Haslam might seem hard, but he's a really caring guy and while the course is reading heavy, he makes the material easy and engaging. The in-class responses can be tricky, but sticky notes and annotations will be your best friends in this case. I would recommend him highly if you want to be challenged and invested in the course
Very nice man. You must participate. He keeps track of that. Assignments are clear. Just make sure you do the reading and homework on time, and you will be fine.
ENG102 (my section was honors) requires you to work hard for good grades. A lot of this work is reading and analysis as the course requires you to read/work with 6 books. For each book, there is a graded in-class response and a discussion board. Dr. Haslam appreciates participation and encourages insightful thinking, so make sure to attend lectures
Professor Haslam seems like a good guy, but this class literally gave me depression. We were always surprised with writing 12 sentences in 25 minutes by hand on difficult prompts. He was so insanely particular about everything Grading was harsher than any other honors course. The final exam given is to write three essays within two hours by hand.
I had to work very hard for a good grade in this class, and there is a ton of reading throughout the semester, but I can say Prof. Haslam definitely turned me into a better reader and writer. This class is anything but a cakewalk, but I would say it's worth taking because of how much my literary skills improved in the class.
Professor Haslam is brutal. He does not know how to use canvas, never announces when he assigns homework/discussion boards, and is an unnecessarily hard grader. Definitely do not take his class.
He's a nice guy. There's a lot of reading and you have to participate at least once every class, he keeps track. There's two essays and four in-class responses. He's not super easy but you just have to make an effort, annotate while you're reading, and participate, and it'll be fine.
Haslam never puts grades into Canvas. He gives out reflections about every four weeks so you never know where you currently stand in the course until you complete it. The books you read are slow and boring, and lectures consist only of students discussing the chapters assigned. He marks down who participates which makes up a large sum of the grade.
Richard Haslam does not put grades in canvas. You don't know your grade until the end of the year. Such a tough grader, after putting in hours of work on any paper he will give you a bad grade. His prompts are so confusing and way longer than they need to be. You never have a break from a book it's one onto the next. I would never take his class.
He's a super nice guy who gives clear instructions on what's expected. Most of the class consists of you reading and then talk about what you read. Sometimes there's a quiz on the reading, but he gives you the question ahead of time. The essays are also in class, so get ready to write 3 pages by hand in class. They are given ahead of time though.
He is a great professor, but he does all writing assignments in class and takes them back, which can be stressful. He is an easy grader and always has some random video to start the day. His writing prompts can be a bit long, though. There is a substantial amount of reading though. Otherwise, he's great!
Very nice and funny guy. His class is easy. Sometimes he does random writing prompts but theyre not hard. its all handwritten which takes time to get used to. he marks participation. also no computers allowed in class. just make sure you read the chapters and participate and you'll be fine.
My favorite professor ever. Super reading heavy class but I cannot stress how much my writing has improved because of him. You have to earn an A but he gives good feedback on all writing. Be prepared to participate a LOT, but he never criticizes you for what you say so it can be fun.
Professor Haslam deeply cares about every student. I had to be absent a couple times, and he was always willing to work with me on what I missed. There are pop quizzes (1 a book) but its simply a prove that you have read, rather than anything difficult. The papers are done in class to avoid students using AI, but he makes sure you are ready.
very reading heavy, you NEED to participate to get a good grade, directions are longer than needed, all essays are written in class, there is a final on all the books read during the semester, however you can read the books and write an essay and still not get the grade you want. you definitely have to put in the workAND he does not make it easier
You do not use devices at all as he is extremely concerned about AI. Two 5 page essays you have to write in class, the prompts have a lot of criteria. You have to read 5 books in the course which he gives pop quiz writing responses on. He makes the layout of the course harder than it needs to be and it is very time consuming to do well.
do not take him, he's a very nice guy just a lot of work. I did all of the readings including getting extra help for the papers and still did not get the grade I wanted. you never get a break from reading.
Dr. Haslam is a kind professor and clearly is passionate about this course. He is also not a hard grader as long as you have a basic understanding of the material. Unfortunately, to get the understanding there's well over 100 pages of reading per week which in my opinion is too many for a FYS. Overall, isn't a tough grade IF you do the mass reading
Professor Haslam is a nice guy, but you will be drowning in homework after every single class, just when you think it's done, there is more. The homework is to read and think about questions in "possible preparation" for pop essays in class, so you always have to actually do the homework just in case. No computers allowed everything is handwritten.
I enjoyed the content in this class but it is not an easy A class. He is a good professor but there is a lot of reading. I did learn a lot however and my writing skills definitely improved in this class.
Participation will tank your grade if you're not talking 2 times every class from day one to the end. Not a hard class but he's a hard grader for really no reason. Friendly and understanding but not willing to cut corners for you. Does not care about the individual. He's funny and engaging, but just not a great professor. Wouldn't recommend
This professor is a good guy with a deep love for what he teaches, but the content is just so boring. Your grade is partially based on participation but he talks for 85% of the class, not many opportunities to speak up. Also a very hard grader and everything is hand written, very anti-tech/ai. A lot of busy work. wouldn't recommend him.
Yes, participation matters in this class but ultimately that's what's going to get you to fully understand the material. He gives good feedback and it is very telling that he wants his students to do good. You can also tell that he has a real passion for literature and just wants his students to be immersed in the reading.
Amazing teacher, I was weird about taking him at first due to ratings but he really is not that bad. If you pay attention in class and do notes you will be fine. You do have to read multiple books throughout the course and definitely will have in class essays but you get the prompts before hand and get to have your notes in front of you to help.
Tougher class with 4 novels and all handwritten, in-class papers. But even having already read 3/4 books I left classes having gotten something out of them. Participation and attendance matter! Definitely cannot slack in this class, but prof puts a lot of effort into discussions that it feels worth it to come prepared. Pretty fair grader.
All essays are done by hand and participation does matter!
He is a good professor and cares about his students understanding. However, he is a very tough grader. I am a straight A student, and have always received A's or B's on papers, and in his class it was hard to get anything above a B. Very strict about attendance and participation.
Very nice guy, knows a lot about literature and does a good job teaching about the novels. Definitely need to read a lot and understand each book. I respect how he hates AI and forces us to do all handwritten assignments. Although your hand will be hurting, doing well on a handwritten assignment brings a lot of satisfaction.
