I'd rather play leapfrog with unicorns than take another class with him
If you are taking the 80 series for the E Area GE, take 80A and 80C. Skip 80B if you can!
I guess you shouldn't take 80B, but he's way chill in 108 (AKA -- Globl 102).
Prof. Hecht really knows his stuff. He has a lot of reading and expects a lot from his students, but he is fun especially if you catch him in a smaller class.
Loved the class, hated him. Was not nice at ALL, when I approached him to ask him a question. Chose good readings, though.
Religion and film was one of the coolest classes I ever had the chance to take! It was very fun and I LOVED the movies he picked. He was funny, made great comments and he really knew what he was talking about. It was also one of the easiest classes at UCSB
He is very good, very fun and easy to understand as well as a giving and generous grader
TONS of reading. I dropped out because of the reading in the class and did not get any GE out of it. However, he is great and the class is great. Not taught by lecture, taught through several guest speakers, with commentary by Hecht. Very clear.
As Hecht himself would say, he's a cool kat. Makes class interesting, if a bit confusing and busy
Hecht's lack of knowledge of the audio-video equipment when showing movies proved aggravating at times. Otherwise, a very interesting class with a professor that's passionate about what he teaches. I highly recommend taking this class; it's easy & fun.
Great professor. Really interesting material/readings, although there's more than I'm willing to do. Tremendously informative; the most important info is in lecture. Good speaker, easy to understand, organized, and a really nice, funny guy.
Hecht did not teach all the time but when he did his lectures where for the most part interesting. He had a lot of plugs for himself and his other classes.
I took this class on Vietnam because everyone said it was super easy. I didn't read and never went to lecture and go a B+. He tells you whats gonna be on the midterm and your final is journal responses to the readings. Also, war veterans conduct lectures.
Hecht shouldn't be allowed to teach 3 hour classes. He moved his powerpoint wayyy too quickly and got mad when we asked him to go back. When he couldn't make it to class, he insisted that we come on a different day, or watch the class at Kerr. Oh helll no
Great teacher. Really nice and grades easy. Lot of reading but if you dont do it you can still get a good grade just show up to lecture and take good notes. He seems like a really nice man.
Journalism was really fun with Hecht. I have taken many courses with him and they are all super fun and enjoyable. Make the most out of your experience with him, they guy is brilliant.
Becomming senile, talks incessantly about nothing. Not interested in student ideas. Big put down if you don't mouth his ideas.
I loved the class, but Hecht really has no part in it. He doesn't teach anything, he's more of an announcer for all the guest speakers. He lost our midterms, & doesn't give people an A unless they visit office hours.something i didn't find out about until after the quarter...all around crap.
Really awesome professor. I've had him for several religious studies classes and have always been impressed. He does assign a lot of reading, but the tests are pretty straight forward. Overall pretty good.
Funny guy....reminds me of my grandpa...in a good way... I would take his class, he seems to want us to learn, he teaches with Campo. VERY FAIR midterm...i've never had a test that fair.
He assigned a lot of reading and he is very boring. This class was not fun at all and I fell asleep more than a few times.
Dr. Hecht makes any room come alive. He is very animated and passionate. His teaching is informative and inspiring. He is a wonderful professor.
His lectures lacked direction and sense.
one hell of a senile old man, lectures are all confusing.
Hechtic as all hell. I love the Hecht out of him.
AWESOME PROFESSOR! ONE OF THE BEST, very helpful, openminded, understanding, insipiring, eager to learn more and teach more...
Hecht is a nice man, however his class was very difficult. He assigned way too much reading for a quarter and his tests were very difficult, even though we were allowed to bring notes. His lectures were confusing and dense and lacked a sense of direction for the class, I could never quite figure out what he was getting at.
Great class, highly recommended. Hecht is a funny guy and inteesting teacher. Take a class

<3 the classes but tangent must be his middle name
Loved the class, it was one of the best classes I took at UCSB. He knew his stuff, and made it a great class--we wrote our own poetry and talked. He knew all of our names, and kept in touch after the class finished. He's just a great professor. I had/have an intellectual crush on him!
This is one of the most interesting and intellectually stimulating classes I have taken at UCSB. The material extends beyond the course into a way of thinking about humanity and the representations of religion in film. The films and readings were time intensive but worth while and the professor is as he would say "one cool cat".
I keep taking classes with this guy because I am always interested in what he is saying, always clear on what is expected of me, and always challenged in a great way. He is a great professor who chooses great content to teach, and teaches it in a way that makes you think about it even when you're not in class.
WOW this class changed my life completely, never will i forget the films we saw about the Shoah. This class was amazing, never will i forget about this class.
This class was unlike any other. Veterans co-teach the class and it is very worthwhile and an amazing experience!
i was very unimpressed with hecht. i took his global religion class last quarter my senior year. his course matter was blatantly skewed, ex. one week on judaism, one DAY on islam. i know you're a jew and all, but seriously, come on...a complete waste of time, learned very little if not nothing for his lectures.
This guy is on a power trip. At points he has good points, but he's pushing the buttons. He self-censors materials. You cannot question his ideas, or explore others. EXTREMELY RUDE to students. Call me an idiot in his office for asking questions too often in his class.
The midterm in this class was ridiculously easy, but the final was an example of an academic torture... I needed full three hours to finish the essay question because it asked for every friggin detail that we had covered... Anyways, he is a fair grader and an easily comprehensible teacher... Don't slack, and you'll do just fine...
Prof. Hecht has a very high opinion of himelf and it's very unclear why. His seminar was a joke - he brought very little value to the class as its leader (it was only via talking with other students that I learned anything) and even talking to him during office hours was a complete waste of time. My heart goes out to those who must deal with him.

Religion and Journalism. This class opened my mind to religion journalism. There was ALOT of reading, 3 article write-ups, and the final was a 3 page paper. Most classes were discussions. If you didn't attend class you wouldn't get much from this class bec. we discussed what a textbook usually write out for. Hecht brought flavor to class.
A fun guy, usually has a tangent to start off the class with, but stays on track with his lectures well enough. Passionate in what he teaches, but don't challenge his ideas too much. Final seemed too heavily weighted, but it worked for me, so eh. Show up to class, have some prior background in the material, then even without reading you'll be fine.
this class is great, one of the only classes that i wish had sections so more could be covered. his outside assignments are fun and make for a good change in scenery HUGE democrate, and loves Obama. he is really funny and likes to joke around. books can be helpful, but not mandatory, just attend lecture.
amazing! so funny and enthusiastic- doing all the reading (which is a lot) is never completely necessary- just find friends in class to have study groups
most amazing teacher and person! you will not regret taking a class from him. he is clear and you definitely know what it is you should know for the test.
amazing
Prof. Hecht is such a joy to listen to. He is very passionate about what he teaches and that definitely comes through as you listen to him. I really enjoyed taking his class, it's fairly easy too. I believe there is only one test, a final, and he gives you the prompt ahead of time. Just make sure your essay and your thoughts are organized. Enjoy!
Best class I have ever taken at UCSB! Professor Hecht doesn't talk much since most of the lectures are given by various Vietnam vets, but it is all amazing. Extremely emotional class, and the reading is very interesting although you don't really have to do all of it, but you should!
His lectures are packed with information. Be prepared to take a lot of notes throughout the course. He lectures on the all the material inside the readings so I found the books to useless. He is a good professor and one of the only ones who truly cares about his students. He is funny too!
One of the worst profs I've taken. He has absolutely no consideration for students' time; not to mention, his lectures are like a non-stop assault with the amount he talks. The class is so extremely boring if you're able to stay awake I commend you.
His lectures are definitely useless in relation to the course. The only reason I received the grade I did was because I missed ONE assignment which was a bit unfair considering there was a possibility to make up for it. He is not very open minded to others' views on the movies, either.
One of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. He's really passionate and knowledge about the material. Reading is helpful but not really need, but lecture definitely is. Two tests: midterm and final. Movies are great!
He is a great professor with much enthusiasm for the subject. A very friendly man and considerate of students. I hardly did the reading but attended all his lectures and did his extra credit and ended up with a B+.
The class was largely historical and having to do with various Rabbi's interpretations of the Bible...boring. It would have been better suited around Jewish culture. He also assumes that a lot of the class is Jewish and therefore doesn't explain many of the critical aspects of the religion. Doesn't provide any feedback on essays or papers.
His class had literally nothing to do with religious studies. It was disappointing to take it expecting to learn more about my major and instead feeling like I was in a film studies course. Interesting guy and really cool, but don't expect much from his courses.
you get to listen to a lot of veterans' stories, and people who have loved ones in the army. great class. midterm (MC)is easy. final (essay)is harder, because you have to incorporate reading to the speakers in class. should take this class
worse class of my life, you wont learn anything about Judaism that you don't already know and the assignments will take all the time you have for this and any other classes
Great professor, loves his work. Felt bad because I was one of the many who were afraid to speak up in class. HW is easy, tests are straight forward. My first religion class and I enjoyed it. Was nice to get a new perspective.
His class on Judaism was extremely difficult. As a non-Jew I had no idea what he was talking about half the time. His midterm/ final requires extreme detail from the reading and lecture, yet he doesn't allow notes to be used. To much reading as well. I came away feeling like I learned nothing about the Jewish tradition.
Worst class ever
The amount of reading assigned was very high. Struggled immensely to keep up with all readings, and thought it was inappropriate to assign 6 readings on dead week totaling over 150 pages. Course content was fairly interesting. Midterm was graded heavily on strange criteria like grammar, professor does allow final exam to count more if bad midterm
I took this class because it was part of my major. I took film and religion with him the quarter prior to and that was good. He is very understanding and does his part as a professor to make you understand the material. Granted some of his material doesn't make sense, but he does his best to give you all that you need for the tests and lectures.
Professor Hecht is a genuinely nice professor, and he goes out of his way to put the class at ease with jokes and funny, short, personal anecdotes when there might be a tense subject matter included in the lecture. He grades very reasonably, and the readings he assigns are plentiful but not too dense. Also, He is interested in what you have to say.
Professor Hecht is a wonderful instructor! His class was highly original and interesting and gave a broad yet deep insight at the relationships between cinema and spirituality. This quarter's theme was "science-fiction". A remarkably cultivated man, accessible and kind. One of the best professors I had at UCSB, what a delight to converse with him!
Make him happy and participate! Hes such a nice guy and enthusiastic about film and teaching. Hes a pretty easy grader. You watch movies (religious and non-religious) and dig deeper into the content. Really cool class. You could pass without buying the books.
If you can take the class. You watch a bunch of weird (Blue Velvet) movies but his in class discussions are interesting because he uses students' responses to engage the class about the movie. Also he's really sweet and easy to talk to.
He's very knowledgeable and very kind! You watch films and talk about them. Participate in class, do all the assignments, and you'll do well!
weekly movie viewing, and a question sheet to fill out about movie. never went to movie viewings, just watched over the weekend on my own time. some film tidbits he just goes over in lecture, which are crucial for midterm, final. you gan google information on them to know the main gyst. themes were sin and salvation, super interesting. fave class
Great class! Professor Hecht is a very good professor who delivers a wealth of information on Jewish tradition and history. As long as you hit the main points he asks to cover on his midterm and final (which he basically provides the prompt for a week in advance), you'll be fine. Two outside events are mandatory to attend, but very interesting.
This class was probably the best I've taken at UCSB so far. Prof. Hecht himself doesn't lecture, as the class brings in multiple lecturers to talk about their experiences at war. It's not hard to get a good grade, although it is a little open ended regarding the midterm and journal assignment. Everyone at UCSB should take this class.
really good guy. very funny. doesn't take attendance, but if you don't come to class i don't know how you would pass. haha. very specific! loves to do long powerpoint slides. like paragraphs. but he is so nice. and sometimes his yarmulke falls off when he gets excited.
I took this class to fulfill a requirement for my major and I loved this class. I took it in summer session but the speed of the course didn't affect Prof. Hecht's capacity to teach or his passion on the subject matter. Truly the most motivating and enthusiastic professor I've had while at UCSB. Highly recommended.
You just watch movies, take notes, read various excerpts, and pass the class. Pretty easy. Although content-wise, don't rely on his information being truth. Make sure to fact check him. He shows different interpretations of how religious historical events MIGHT have happened, and once claimed something to be "accurate" with zero evidence? Sketch.
I took RG ST 131D and 131H with Hecht as well. He's a great professor, very engaging lecturer. The readings aren't necessarily mandatory but I can't imagine how one would receive anything higher than a B on the midterms without citing them. Usually offers significant extra credit. Super nice and funny. Knows a lot about the topics he teaches.
One of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are fantastic! He is very friendly and engaging with students and his exams reflect the theme of the class accurately. I 100% recommend him, take him if you can! I will definitely take him in again!
Hecht is a great and hilarious person but not a great teacher. His lectures are long and slides are verbose. He does a lot of telling in a class that requires a lot of showing. Expects you to just know certain things without fully explaining. There's a 10-12 page essay. An essay midterm and final in class that takes the entire period.
As a religious studies major I went through this class constantly wondering what it had to do with religion. Hecht loves to ramble on and on. Some lectures you just sit there with no notes to take. Be warned the midterm and final are in class essays. It's an easy class but some effort is needed
I am a soc major, and I've taken every class that I can with Dr. Hecht (4 after this quarter) he's an amazing professor. I took him for judaism, history of anti-Semitism, religion and politics in the city, and impact of vietnam. all amazing classes, all of them are 2 outside events, 1 midterm and a final except judaism had an essay. TAKE HIM.
in past years, this class was only listening to the veteran's stories with one final project at the end. Now there's a rediculous amount of required reading (2000 pages throughout the quarter) as well as three 5-page essays and a long essay format final. Interesting class, but don't take unless you have a light quarter.
I took RGST 130 with Hecht but it was 80% taught by his TA and the subject for the quarter was Disney animation... pretty boring class and you won't actually learn much about religion if you don't do the reading. Both prof Hecht and the TA were really nice and helpful with questions.
Professor Hecht is an amazing professor. He cares about his students and about what he teaches. He will always help you, if you ask him for it. Going to class matters, he tests you on readings and on what he talks about in class. This isn't an issue because his lectures are very interesting.
Hecht is one of the worst professors I've ever had. He is legitimately stupid, gives us false information all time. He takes weeks to give essays back. He is late for office hours. He does not allow for any dissenting opinion and only likes to hear his own words and ideas. Class is only summary. There are 2 short 5 pg essays and 1 final 10 pg essay
LOVED this class!! The theme was Disney films, which made every lecture really fun and interesting. Made points about the connection between dif religions and Disney that I never would have thought of. Weekly reading responses, but they give you the page numbers that the answers are on (super easy). 2 short, straightforward papers, and no exams.
Professor Hecht is an amazing person! Ive taken a couple classes with him and he loves teaching the material. Class had one midterm and one final. Both are written exams that come right from lecture material. A few extra credit events. Lectures are mot poated online so take good notes. On exams just write down as much as you know and youll do well
simply the worst professor on the planet
I like him, and his lectures! weird grading : you have to go to 3 events and write a summary and if you miss 1 event then you don't get any credit for the 2 you went to. He gives you the study guide which is the exam but its a in class essay and you can't bring notes so you have to memorize what you wrote at home and then write it again. ididwell
He knows the material very well and gives engaging lectures with the occasional joke thrown in to keep things interesting. Very nice guy and an you'll do well if you show up and take good notes. Mandatory out of class events but you get extra credit for going to all of them, and most of them were interesting and worth it.
Hecht is a really nice older guy, really passionate about the subject matter. Lectures were sometimes boring and could drag on, but regardless Hecht really cares about his students and wants them to be involved and learn. Out of class assignments were fun and eye-opening. Midterm & Final were 90% of the grade but open-ended and simple if you study.
Not hard to get an A, but you do have to try. He has a separate time to watch the films, but I usually just watched them on my own time. Has two film responses that are super easy, and the midterm and final are a breeze as long as you watched the films and compared them to the readings and lecture. You do need your lecture notes for the exams
Attending Hecht's class is mandatory as writing a good essay requires using his opinions which he considers facts due to his large amount of experience. While a very knowledgable person, I felt my essay's were graded down because my analysis didn't parrot his own. He's a nice guy just stuck in the past and loves to name drop the people hes met.
I had some difficulty with this class. Graded by midterm, final & two assignments. I would do good on the assignments but the midterm and final are both essays which were harshly graded and had no clear expectations on what to write. He is nice and approachable but the grading is weird. Not a free A class, work will be required to pass
Very caring and passionate. He was understanding to students and enthusiastic about his class. Though the subject was not one I was particularly interested in, he was amazing to learn from and I consider him one of my favorite professors.
Hes a super nice guy and Im sure he's a great person but our final essay has to be 10-12 pages long and every week we had to write a 3 page essay. I don't recommend for someone who doesn't like writing essays
Very kind person, class is definitely important. But end of the class devolves into general feeling that rightfully labeling the harm of Israel against Palestinians is violently anti-Semitic. You have to agree with his outdated views to pass. 10 page essay for final, 60-80 pages of reading a week + 2 books. Too much for a non-lit class.
Definitely takes detailed notes of his lectures, will come in handy with writing essays. He is adorable and very Jewish, very knowledgeable with Judaism. TA comes in handy with any questions you might have. Richard seems very easy to talk to. I got by without reading an assigned book but had to do a lot of reviews. Take this course if you need to!
Professor Hecht gives a ton of extra credit. His lectures are very basic. He just shows pictures and videos of Jerusalem and briefly talks about them. He assigned two brief homework assignments worth 2.5% each, a roughly 3-page midterm worth 35% of the grade & a 10-page paper for the final, worth 60%. I skipped class all quarter and easily passed.
Hecht is an incredible professor. He is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter, and his personal anecdotes are funny and fascinating. Hecht is a gem and one of the best professors at UCSB.
Professor Hecht's grading system is awful. I thought I was doing well in the class until my final grade came out and I got a C. I never got below a B on any assignment, so I am not sure what made him think giving me a C was ok. Went to the department head and they did nothing. Easy class but beware of the grading system.
One of the worst college courses I've taken. Barely graded on anything; papers carried all of the weight. Had to write two 10-page essays within 2 weeks of each other. Lectures were monotonous and moved online after one class in person. Professor Hecht was kind enough but dismissed other forms of -ism (racism, etc) and came off as tone-deaf.
Worst prof in RS. Don't believe good reviews. Not structured like a intro class and hard to follow unless you have prior education in Judaism. He is hyper focused on his own personal ideology. If you don't repeat his views prepare for a bad grade. Got an A bc I got early this isn't an 'open dialogue' type of class. Plus he's a boring lecturer too!
Challenging intro class with a strong focus on the professor's views. Prepare to memorize material rather than open dialogue. However, Unstuckstudy helped me stay organized for exams.
