He would joke around every class and talk about current events and video games. Then, test time would come and he would try to be strict.Once or twice, he said we could have a notecard for a test, then didn't allow us the day of. The tests weren't hard, but we were overall unprepared.
HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE! Good luck passing this class. He is unorganized. The book and his lecture teach very differently. The tests reflect very little from his lectures OR the book!! Occasionally he graded my assignments incorrectly, when they were correct...I had to double check everything.
the worst teacher ever, and never tought me anything he was to busy playing with his dam smart board he sucks
I spoke to various students and I've gotten the same negative feedback from everyone. The students always correct him while using smart board. He rushes you through the test so he could begin his lecture. He is the only math teacher that teaches at night. He is not recommended in my book.
He is the worst math teacher I've ever had.
he completly SUCKED.. i dont know how in gods name he is actually a teacher.. every two seconds he was telling us something about his stupid smartboard or his stupid computer crap.. if you are comming into the class with a poor understanding of math and ar
The prof. prepared you for Math 100. I would highly recommend him to anyone. Does not allow calculators, but you will learn more without it. Have to be prepared to work hard. Fair grading. I would take another class of his.
did not help students, unorganized, he was all over the place. one day he would be joking the next hed be all strict. constantly fixed the smart board. all hw was on course compass, tests didnt correlate with what he taught.
if you know a little about algebra, you'll do fine
This professor has kept me from attempting another math class, he doesn't have a clue how to "teach" math that's for sure!
Projects were given that were not on the syllabus, The tests were not delivered to the testing centered in a timely manner, long delays in getting grades returned with short deadlines, questions were answered in a very curt manner. A very hard course to handle, and definitely not advisable for any online students. Tutoring may be required to pass.
I have never had a better math teacher. I'm not sure where the other comments come from. If you are a committed student you will do well in his class. I've had two classes with him and achieved an A in both. Medium work load, online homework, being absent is a problem.
Excellent teacher. Attendance a must and homework also. If you make the effort and don't spend your time complaining you will do fine. The technology in the class is very helpful for access to notes and homework. But, you must be willing to do the work and not whine.
Mr. Herbst is the best math teacher that I have ever had. He has an incredible grasp on his expertise of knowledge and is able to convey to the students. His use of technology is a great help in the learning process. If you are really interested in learning, he is the teacher for you. If you want an easy grade, look somewhere else.
He teaches very fast but not very clearly. His test are nothing like the notes or the homework that you have to do online. He will sometimes go on random rants and try to tie math in it which is pointless. His tests are also worded differently and you have to be almost perfect just to get all the points. I wouldnt recomend taking him.
I you had him for class you would know he wrote the comments saying he is a excellent teacher. By far the worst teacher every. He is in no way a math teacher. He is more foucsed on himself than the students. Oblivious to the world and is very self centered. Feel he teaches math out of spite. If you had him you would agree with me 100%.
I liked Mr. Herbst. Lots of work so be dedicated!
I had Mr. Herbst for MAT011 and MAT100. His teaching is for those who are willing to do the work and learn. His encouragement led me to enroll in PreCalc I & II and Stat I. His multileveled instruction helps all kinds of students. I am a non-traditional student, mother of 4 and I hope that my kids have a teacher like him!
Had him for Inter. Alg. I tend to struggle with Alg, but when I took Mr. Conway's Beg. Alg, I got an A. That's because Mr. Conway is a great teacher. Mr. Herbst isn't. He's not very clear and can easily confuse you. I dropped his class and took it again w/another instructor-I got a B. Don't take his clas if you can avoid it!
Teaching methods are different, but if you are willing to put in the time and effort, you can succeed, just like any other class. Any questions you have on particular homework problems, he will show you how to do them in the begining of class and he will not begin class until all questions are answered.
horrible teacher! very self-centered and is more interested in showing off his extensive knowledge than actually teaching it. teaches very fast and is not clear. tests are different than homework. he told a student that a 66% on a test is "actually pretty good." I do not recommend taking him.
He is terrible. He has no interest in making sure students will pass, and even tells students they will fail! very discouraging! His course compass helps more! but if u even miss one problem he wont give u any credit for it! he speaks very loud and gives me a headache every class. he isnt very good at explaining in a clear way!! dont take him!!!!
Very condescending - Tells you that every project has to be typed no hand writing but sends all answers back as hand written.
Horrible teacher ! He doesn't accept handwritten answers, but sends solutions in his ineligible manuscript. Solutions to projects 2 and 3 posted in last wk. of class, solution for wk. 4 was posted night before final. In BB discussion, he doesn't respect students. Take lots of pts. on his own defined category of "neatness".. Horrible !
I took this class online. I struggled with his tests not being delivered to testing center in a timely manner, so I had to contact them for avg. of 3- 4 days before scheduling exams in testing center. Careless!
He was horrible! My advice is simple - take your math class from someone, anyone, else.
I had him for online stats and he was useless, condescending, untimely; he's the worst. I'm a straight A student, and I found his exams to be absurdly convoluted, his projects to be overly time-consuming, and his grading techniques harsh. He didn't answer student questions EVER in a timely fashion- I'm talking weeks late. Horrible, horrible prof.
People need to quit busting on Prof. Herbst because of the class -- if you do the work he assigns, you'll be fine. If you don't (like I didn't) you will struggle with the class. My biggest issue was his VERY slow grading process. 40 question ScanTron tests take three weeks to grade? If you can deal with all that, you should be fine in his class.
Herbst's class will be hard if you dont put the time in to do the work, he teaches the "old way" of how to do the problems, most other teachers teach how to use the calculator to solve the problems. his online class you need to teach yourself basically or go to learning assistance lab...ask for Oleg!
Relatively easy for MAT 011. I didn't have a hard time. Does work with students if the student puts in the effort.
Not that bad of a teacher. I think the reason Math profs are judged harshly on this site is mainly because most Americans hate Math. He runs a very high-tech classroom, there's no denying that. His lectures were too rapid for me to follow.
He is a nice guy, but thinks everyone is going to be a math major. Wastes a lot of time talking about random things and focuses on giving way too much homework. His tests are extremely hard. He doesn't prepare you for his tests and grades harsh. I'm usually a 4.0 student and very organized and I'm lucky I passed with a C in his class. Good luck.
Online Statistics/Summer 1 was very hard!!Projects started out okay and got harder. I recommend very tough and this class required a TON of time for projects, course compass homework, tutoring and studying. Never again would I take this online. Complaint: he didn't respond to discussion board questions promptly, but graded fairly.
I despised him, but I recommended him to my son, who loved him. Mr. Herbst seems to inspire strong feelings. He is curt, consdecending, and not above interrupting students with the suggestion that their question is unimportant. I simply do not tolerate disrespect, especially publicly. But he is CLEAR and ORGANIZED. You will work hard.
Really nice person;not a good teacher. Very confusing. If you struggle with a concept, he always asks if you have spent any time in the learning lab, as if everyone has the time to go hang out there. If you take this class, DONT BUY THE BOOK! You have to buy coursecompass which has the ebook in it. We never even used the book one time. Nice guytho
He's a good guy, and he makes mathematics relatable; best Professor I've had in that field. Just show up and do your hw.
This class was very unorganized. Chapter power points did not line up with what was in the book. Discussion board questions that you would post , the Professor did not respond promptly. He would respond a week later and most times you had to hand in your homework before he answered your question.. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR!!!
Good prof very nice person, however he goes off topic quite a bit and we didn't get to go through the whole book.
MAT100 was very hard for me because I am not wonderful at math. However, Professor Herbst gave a lot of opportunities for extra credit, which definitely saved my grade. Overall, he is a very nice person and a good teacher. I ended up receiving a B+, which I am extremely thankful for considering I struggled so much with this course.
The power points didn't always cover everything you needed to know, so textbook is a must (with online you have to have it to do homework anyway). Not one of those teachers who tries to trick you on exams, responds quickly to discussion board questions and emails.
Get ready to sit through the most boring class you've ever witnessed. He gives most of the homework online and a lot of it at one time. Goes off topic an extensive amount and is all over the place with what he is saying. Didn't get though the whole chapter.
He was very well organized and showed tips and tricks on how to solve problems easier and with out a calculator. I was in an accelerated summer class, and the homework load was little on the high side at times, but it was great practice and I never needed to study extra problems for a quiz. I left his class feeling very confident for the next.
Do not take this class if you hate lots of home work or most homework online, plus you have to pay seperate for the online access which is 100$ Nice that he can go off topic on some things Can be very condescending goes over things during lecture but never any practice tho, and just moves on
He is hard to get in reach with, took forever to grade projects and had to curve most of our assignments and tests because nobody knew what they were doing. Also took a while to respond to questions we had. He did however give us good resources to succeed in the class but I did not feel like he put in enough to help students.
I don't know why so many people don't like him! He is overall not the BEST at explaining all the concepts but his teaching is fine and he gives you a lot of easy points/extra credit. He was also very lenient with needing more time on projects and extended quite a few of our projects. I enjoyed his class
Offers lots of extra credit, amazing lectures, very caring, and always available outside of class
Offers lots of extra credit, and is always available. Great at teaching, and the course is of average difficulty. Easy B, if you put in a little effort an A won't be any trouble at all.
Prof Herbst is the best math professor I have taken here at MontCo. I will be looking to take more of his classes. i took his MAT 100 class and wish I could take him for Stats next semester because I need that to complete my math track at West. Do not want to commute to Central!
Super impressed with his teaching styles. Accommodates to students needs very often too
I took this as a summer class and I was actually impressed with myself at the end. Prof H taught me how to "study" math and teaches in a very clear manner
Clearly an experienced teacher and knows how to teach to different types of learners. Recommend to all needing a math class
Easy! and very structured. the structure makes it any easy class to complete. isn't rude or pushy like some math teachers. really wants you to succeed. talk to him after class it really helps if he knows who you are. makes the class go by quicker too!
SO excited that professor herbst is teaching this calculus class. i took it with another professor and it did not go well at ALL !!!!1! excited to retake it with him
Take this professor! Honestly, you would be a fool not to. I have struggled all my life with math and this is the first math professor I have taken that seems to understand that! He truly gets that the majority of students aren't taking his class for fun and that many programs require it. He wants to see you succeed!
I cant say enough good things about this instructor. He understands that people dont take Buisness calculus for fun and he makes it possible to do well, even for people like me who have always struggled in math.
I am currently in this class online. it sucks we arent even in week two and i wanna drop it. Avoid this professor like the plague. he isnt helpful, makes things quit difficult and doesnt provide enough material when answering your questions as a student. I feel like he should not be teaching intro to stats if he can not answer questions
I really enjoyed taking him. He is really helpful and understanding. The resources he uses are also amazing in aiding study skills. Would recommend and take him again if I needed to take another math class. Also, was half online and half in the class - optional to come w/ questions
Professor Herbst is very patient and willing to work with you. Stay on top of the homework. Youll fall behind if not.
I would suggest NOT taking this as an online, 6-week summer course. There is just not enough time to cover (and retain) all 11 chapters, there were no lectures to accompany the powerpoints and outside of the midterm(30%) and final(30%), there were only 5 other grades. This proved to be a really tough class.
I would try to take this class in person rather than online. His online courses only have two tests, a midterm and final, which are both 30% of your grade which makes it difficult. Very understanding and helpful man.
Professor Herbst takes math and makes it an accessible and even fun subject at times. He is all about participation and being able to understand the topics. There is lots of homework but it was more of a practice scenario for tests that he would give assistance with at the start of class. I would take him again for another class.
Hes an Amazing professor and pulled through! He is real helpful and understanding, and will guide you all throughout the course. Very lenient and awesome. If you take him as a professor you wont regret it!
Best professor I have ever had. No one more compassionate and understanding as him. Understands work/school balance and will accommodate for you as well as cater your needs! Need more professors in our academic system such as Professor Herbst!
If you need to pass statistics, Professor Herbst is the man! He will take care of you and will help with whatever you need. Extends due dates and does not give you a hard time for late work! Keep up with class and do the homework, and your grade will be an A for sure.
I am horrible at math but Prof. H was a good teacher. If you need help you can get to him easily & as long as you do the work you will pass!
His online lectures were very good and helpful! The projects and homework were standard/not that hard, and helped me learn a lot :) He also gives you lots of time to complete assignments and replies to you in a timely manner. Definitely take him if you need to take prob and stat!
Professor Herbst was awesome this semester. After a strong start in the course, so I started working ahead. Ended up asking him to open up the midterm and final early (he was more than happy to do so) and I finished the course 6 weeks early and it did not feel like much work. He even gave students extra credit on projects just for early submission.
Professor Herbst was honestly a really great teacher for this course. I took MAT130 online synchronously and it was great. He was very engaging with his lectures and he spends time to make sure that everyone understands the content. You need to actually go to your class if you want to do well, you can't just skip out on it. 100/10 recommend him!
The most wonderful teacher! He does not give too much work and is understanding if you need more time for tests and assignments. He opened multiple tests, assignments, and our final ahead of time just to accommodate us. He began giving a 10 min break in the middle of a lecture at our request. He is the professor we all wish each course could have.
I took this as an async course and at first struggled to understand the concepts, however, once I started actually watching the video lectures he posts for each chapter it extremely helped. I really enjoyed his class and although I never met him in person, from his lectures, I can tell he is a really nice person and good teacher.
Its a very easy class. Just watch the lectures at 2x speed and you will finish in like 2 hours. The grading system is homework and exams. The homework can be taken as many times as you want withen the time frame, and help is very accessible. Emailing for help is easy and quick and he is pretty good at explaining things.
workload is a lot ngl but that was expected for an accelerated course. He is very accommodating and nice and responds to emails very fast. Highly recommend him just be ready to work.
I took Prof. Herbst for an online 6-week Statistics class. I was pretty nervous considering its a harder class but he's great. He gets back to you quick if you need help which means a lot when it's a fast course. Also, something that is a plus is that you can work ahead whenever you feel like it. I would take him again and recommend him!
he is so nice. teaches you best way possibile. always looking out your well being. caring, nice
Mr. Herbst is a fantastic teacher! He takes his time to help those who are struggling and won't make you feel bad about getting an answer wrong. He gives plenty of real-world examples and applications of what you learn in class, keeping the lessons engaging.
I avoided math formulas, equations, & those God-awful word problems before taking Professor Herbst's course - until he began to show me a different side of math & why I no longer needed to fear. He conveys strategies in various ways, allowing everyone to catch on. I'm confident now & apply what he's taught me to calculate scenarios in real life.
I took Professor Herbst 7 week online course for MAT100 and it was not amazing but not terrible. He weighted his exams to a total of 75%. It doesn't even matter if you get all 100's on the homework assignments, if you do bad on one exam, it's gonna drag your grade down a lot. Basically, if you're a bad test taker, steer away from this class.
rarely interacted with the teacher but the class was very easy. if needed, you could ask herbst questions through the website that was used. when asked, he would explain the questions very well and his lecture videos were very clear and helpful. he also posts the powerpoints to look back at if needed.
Not bad professor he taught stats good at least not like the other professor I took overall I would take him again.
His Statistics lecture videos were very clear and well explained so I never had any issue completing homework assignments.
If you're not a STEM major, math sucks. However, Herbst definitely is a great professor for those gen ed math classes. He genuinely seems to care and loves his job, he tries his best to engage his classroom and he makes great real life connections to problems.
love taking his class
