He lacks the ability to teach in any understandable form. He gets far from the topic at hand and keeps poor records. If you have any desire to pass without being confused 90% of the time DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
If you know anything of HTML then don't take this class. He gets far off-topic and makes the actual assignments unclear. The actual HTML he has you do in incredibly basic things, and yet he somehow manages to make them confusing.
Hes a moron. He doesnt know how to teach a class. Its through the semester and I do not even know how to program. He doesnt help becuase he doesnt know anything. All CIS teachers are morons do not take CIS.
Class is not that difficult since it's out of a book most of the time. Professor is pretty nice and tries to help students. Tries to get students to interact with each other through group work and also by assisting in class participation.
Very good teacher. Helped out whenever a question was asked. Tought things other than Visual Basics. Topics like the war and the Sudan. Excellent teacher.
Basically, the class work, quizzes, and assignments are on WEBCT, all work is in the book and all YOU have to do is read and follow the directions in the tutorials to do the assignments. If you need assistance, he will help you know doubt, Good enuf prof

He's very unclear on the assignments and his sylabus is inaccurate. I'd recommend that anyone with any inkling of the subject matter take a different professor with a more structured class.
Where do I begin with this one? This class was very unorganized and unstructured. Nobody knew when things were due. I found him VERY rude and unprofessional.He has worked long enough and I can tell he is tired of dealing with students. Time to retire!

it's midterm & this instructor doesn't help online or independent study students. I've sent Hewer 20 emails & I've received 2 replies. Dean's welcome says: faculty truly care about your learning experience. IT'S CRAP! CIS faculty blow.
Good class if you know what you are doing and you don't want teacher interference. Very easy A if you keep track of you assignments.
CAN'T TEACH OR CODE: "I have gone through and change all of the grades so that you did not lose points for any late submittals-I reopened all of the quizzes and you can retake any of them-Any projects not submitted may be submitted."
Hewer is a awesome teacher. He wont do your coding for you however he does give students the benifit of the doubt. Students need to be more organised its not his job to baby sit you! Hewer is the shiznit hang in there buddy
its a good thing he had the instructors manual-he cant program or answer questions-most students failing & he let everyone resubmit projects & tests so he doesnt APPEAR to be lousy teacher-tons of busy bookwork & no real coding or help
The whole class is based off of webct. The class itself is very easy. You can be done with your work early every week so you can take Friday off. Hewer is a bad professor. Don't ask him anything...he doesn't know anything.

Very easy class. Everything is on Webct. Open book quizzes. As for Hewer, he kind of a jerk. The only way you can do good in this class is to teach yourself the material.
I don't understand how he got this job. He's a terrible professor and is unable to answer questions. He doesn't seem to have a clue about anything. The class is an easy A though. I have a perfect 100%, yet it is almost the end of the semester and I have no idea how to do anything in Visual Basic.
So much for learning programming. If you know nothing about visual basic don't expect him to teach you. A stundent in class showed him how to create the programs. If it wasn't for the extra time I spent with that student outside of class I would have not gotten anything done. He dose not teach!
Doesn't seem to know what's going on nor does he care. He doesn't teach the material and is no help whatsoever when you ask him. One student in class teaches him how to do everything. He changes his mind about assignments every other day and expects us to do things that were never taught. Terrible.
The class itself is very easy. It's all WEB-CT based. The text goes step by step through the material, but I have not really learned much at all by taking the class. He does not offer much help at all. The quizzes are easy if you have actually done the lessons. It's an easy A for sure, but boring.

If you know about computers thi sis an A for you. The teacher sucks!!! He doesn' explain the assignments and he changes the format of our quizzes every couple of quizzes which is really confusing. Overall, this class sucked.
Probably not the best professor I've ever had, but he wants his students to do well. Always wants to help. He's not the smartest in this subject, but he tries. Everything is just through WebCT and you don't have to go to Friday classes if you get your work done. :)
THE ONLY COOL THING ABOUT THIS CLASS IS THAT EVERYTHING IS ON THE WEB, AND YOU GET TO DO EVERYTHING AS A GROUP. LISTEN TO PEOPLE INTRODUCE THEMSELVE THE FIRST DAY, FIND A CIS MAJOR, AND SNUGGLE UP TO THEM TIGHTLY...THEY'LL DO ALL THE WORK, YOU CAN KICK BACK AND COLLECT THE 'A'. AS FOR HEWER, HE DOESN'T KNOW JACK.
Terrible! Man, I can't believe they let this go on. Doesn't care about teaching - might have at one time but not anymore. He expects you to learn everything from the book. Sure, you can just copy what's in the book and get an easy A, but what a waste of time and money. Preaches his believes (religious and otherwise) on the class. Rude. Retire!
even though I got an A, it was a complete waste of time. he teaches U nothing & U MUST learn from the book. he needs 2 learn about privacy of his students regarding emails sent 2 him & even more so, not mention grades, even if they have no names attached 2 them or show the grading screen on the wall so that everyone who looks up can see any scores

Dude this teacher is awesome.. The assignments are so easy, if you get it done on wed. you dont have to come on fri. The quizes are so easy because one you can use your book, two you can take the quiz two times and three, if you dont know ask him and he will tell you the answer..simple as that.. If you think he is a bad teacher your crazy..

DO NOT LISTEN TO BELLOW COMENTS! Hewer is an awesome guy who will help you get an A no matter what. The assignments and class are boring but easy, but go figure its studying word, powerpoint and excel. Loved the professor, hated the class.
I was scared to take him from the review I read, but he's a really nice guy. He's very helpful, and wants everyone to pass with an A. The work isn't remotely hard, and you don't have to go to class if you get your work done early. I recommend him if you have to take this class.

This guy loves to run his mouth about boring crap. Like most ISYS profs. you probably know more about the topic than he does. The work in his class is easy, but agonizingly time consuming. If you ever need help get it from the 'class assistants' rather than this talkative 'know-it-all'

This was supposed to be an intro programming course and it turned out to be super hard!! I was in Hewer's office constantly asking for help. He knows his stuff, but he just can't bring it down to a level that everyone understands.
i HATE computers but he dummied it down for me so i could understand. very helpful and lets you catch up with extra credit
wants everyone to get an a. if you have a problem talk to him. but he takes alot of class time to talk politics.

Very helpful for anything i needed. Cares not just for the content taught in class but also for the students. He has made it very clear that he is always available for any troubling situation we are in. I respect that.
Nice enough guy, genuinely cares about his students, but goes off on massive, long tangents and if you don't have a good attention span you'll fight to stay awake. If I knew any better, might have thought it was a class about politics because it's all he seems to talk about and every project revolves around them.
Good teacher, if you have your stuff done then you don't have to attend some of the classes! Easy A, just do the work.

Awful. I took the online version of this course and it was quite honestly the worst class/prof. I have had at Ferris. Gave out a bogus final that the class worked on for two + weeks then threw it out on the last day because he can't teach. Hewer will really frustrate you. Can be an easy A, but the frustration is almost to much. AVOID OR ELSE!!!
Most professors lecture about the topics in the textbook during class time; he either rants about politics or tries to fix mistakes he made in FerrisConnect. Massive waste of time. Avoid at all costs if you actually want to learn something.
This class is such a waste of time. He rant and raves about everything else but class material. He is so slow to get things done, he is never prepared for class, and he is NOT helpful. If you ask him a question he will not answer you! I recommend NOT taking him.
I feel this class is an excellent refresher or for first time users. I am an older student and this class and the professor were easy to understand and had fun at the same time. Excellent class !!!
Dr. Hewer is a great teacher! He wants everyone to get an A in his class. He is always available for helping students. This class was easy for me, but there are quite a few assignments. If you try at all, you will get an A.

Complete right wing nut. Might as well have Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Rielley teach the class. Lecutures about politics, mandatory attendance, everything out of the book. Stupid group work too.
Obsessed with conservative politics, outright compared Obama to the literal antichrist. Class is easy if you have common sense and learn on your own because he sure won't help you. Group work is easy if you have a good group, not so much if you have a bad one. Tests made from test bank questions, often nonsensical.
He does not add anything of use to the course. I could have taken it online and completed the same work without him and not known the difference. His lectures add absolutely nothing but are good study time for tests if you ignore him. The only thing he seems concerned with is pushing his right wing agenda. My advise is to ignore him and work ahead.
Hewer never said one thing during class that was actually useful. His knowledge of technology is poor. He is sold on the cult of cloud computing. He spends most of his time on conservative rants that have all the credibility of a viral email.
I took the ISYS 105 class because I needed the 3 credits to be full time. Online assignments were extremely unclear, the simulations were poorly designed & confusing, and tests didn't reflect what you learned in the assignments. Professor was unorganized and unclear. Doing the homework literally gave me anxiety.
The online class doesn't follow a clear schedule, and when dates had to be changed he was very confusing about it. His projects are unnecessarily complicated and I think he expects too much for a 100-level class. I barely learned anything from the class and found his tutorials way too long and usually unhelpful.
Most assignments are done through pearson's website, which can be annoying as the programs can be overly nit-picky and mark you wrong even though it would have worked fine in regular word, excel, or powerpoint. Richard Hewer is a great guy, and between him and his assistant you can get help to get the questions answered correctly.
Does not explain things clearly at all. Assignments are confusing. Disorganized: many different due dates in different locations for same assignment. Gives boring presentations & then critisizes students for boring presentations about boring topics. Nice guy but not a great teacher. Would not take another class by him. Assigns too much group work.
Give you tons of work online for a face meeting class so he don't have to do any grading. Crazy group projects. Might as well take it online because he don't have any material for you.
Class feels antiquated and covers things learned by middle school students. Mandatory attendence policy can be frustrating because most "lectures" are reading of project instructions and class should be an independent study online course as guidance could be found easily and better through non-traditional means.
TONS OF HOMEWORK. There is so much homework in this class due each week its so time consuming and almost impossible to get it all done on time if you are taking any other classes. Prof isn't much help and doesn't explain online projects well to student who never see him face to face.
This is his last year at Ferris because he doesn't have a PhD. He doesn't care about his students or Student Assistants. All he does is sit in front of the class and do nothing else. He lectures about the places he visits and third world countries while he is talk your not allowed to work on your class work.
Projects are very independent and all computer based. Attendance is only mandatory if you havent finished that specific weeks assignments. Only about one assignment a week and the tests are easy if you participate. He is very helpful with problems you are having and asks individually if you have any questions specific to your own struggles.
