Mr.Hishmeh is a very easy going and laid back teacher that doesnt assign homework. I have two problems with his class though. 1. He is so laid back people became disrepectful and disruptive especially this annoying couple that sat in the middle of the class, the girl always abused he boyfriend. 2. the course outline is very unfocused and hard to fo
cool guy but very hard. Quizes were difficult even if you did the assigned reading. harsh grading on Essays. Total of 4 essays and 3 short essays on a short reading from a book called "A History of the World in 6 Glasses" by Tom Standage. No grammer work, If your looking for an easy eng 100 class to get it over with, DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!
Hishmeh was pretty cool. We had 5 essays in total: 3 take home and two in-class + the final. Hishmeh cracks jokes alot. He's very accessible with his students. He lets you revise your essays. I would recommend him, hes pretty chill.
richard...is a great english teacher..not only his he really helpful and good at explaining the material..he makes the class fun with jokes and gets to know his students..and makes sure the class is fun so you dont lose intrest..plus hes cute haha..
he is a really nice/hot professor who knows his stuff...he's a dr! I enjoyed coming to class because although you did learn(what did you expect people, this is college) he made the atmosphere enjoyable and open to discussion. The reading assignments were about 50-100 pages per week, there are four assigned essays, overall, nothing you can't handle.
he's really easy and makes class fun. very lenient with late work.
He's a fair grader, and a very understanding teacher. Critical thinking is necessary throughout all essays. The class can be stressful at times, but you are not bombarded with work. Also, pretty funny in class.
Awesome Teacher, felt bad for him during discussions because our class was mute, but his reading selections were great, he discussed them well enough for you to understand historical context and storyline, midterm was easy, just show up and take notes, overall enjoyable course. great professor.
He is a fun, engaging professor who I really enjoyed. He made me laugh everyday with his dry, sarcastic humor. He is not super easy, but it's worth it. You will enjoy him. And he's so cute!
He was a good teacher and made class fun. And good looking ;)He uses great examples to teach you and grading is a good system.
Very Passionate about literature. Makes an effort to get to know students. Expect to participate daily so read! Would definitely take another class from this prof.
Hard class. We had difficult tests and assignments. We only had a midterm, final, lengthy paper, and journals. The journals which are easy do not count for much of your grade. All exams have quote identification and a difficult essay question. He is so sexy though, that it almost makes it worthwhile to take the class.
this class was a little difficult to pass. he grades hard. but hes pretyy good looking :)
Would definitely take another class from this prof. he is great and fun, but also very strict. You will learn a lot from this class and from him.
Very clear teacher and makes the information interesting. this class does require a lot of dedication though. you can pass the class just get an amazing grade if you have a lot of other things going on. But Hishmeh is a very good teacher.
This guys is HILARIOUS, but still gets his teaching done. The class I took required a TON of reading, and I could barely keep up, but he does a good job of going over the important, need-to-know parts of the novels. Definitely recommended. :)
Really like him as a person. I did not like the novel choice so that made it difficult. I think he's a brilliant teacher but he expects a lot out of you. He will push you and not spoon feed you.
Really funny guy. Easy to talk to in person however he is not so great over email. He is strict about turning in assignments on time but usually gives full credit if you do. If you are not a self starter or good at English don't take the online class. Also has really cute baby daughter which he has with him in his office sometimes:) A+
This Professor was very strict. He assigns tons of reading, weekly discussions and peer reviews according to the GMS guildlines. However, I think he is a great teacher. He cares about his students and responds quickly to their emails. He is very approachable and helpful. It was a good on-line class and I am glad it is over.
Online course was great, despite others' complaints. Fair amount of work compared to other English classes. He's very smart, personable, and sexy;) Brilliant prof. who will make every effort to help you "get it",as long as you put out some effort. Not an easy class, but not very difficult. Would definitely take another online or reg. class w/him.
He is a fair grader who offers constructive criticism. He doesn't BS and will get straight to the point, but respectfully.
Hishmeh's online course was very demanding, but he was a fair grader and was always willing to take the time to make sure we (the students) understood. I did take a lot from the course and though I didn't care much for Moby Dick it was more enjoyable because of the group conversations he encouraged. The only thing wrong was the other students.
Hishmeh is an amazing english teacher! His humor is what gets you through those late night classes. Reading Moby Dick was horrible but I realllly enjoyed everything else he had to offer. Not to mention, he's a very good looking man for his age :)
I hated this class. He doesn't grade with a rubric, so grading is extremely subjective. He has his favorites, and always grades them easier. The amount of poems he expects you to read is ridiculous. He is unclear on assignments and the way he assigns his essays is ridiclous. This was my first time getting below an A in English. So ridiclous!
Took his online class. When talking to him over email, he comes off as harsh, but face-to-face, he provides nothing but constructive criticism. What you get out of this class is determined by what you put into it. As long as you do the assignments and ask for help when you truly need it, you'll do fine.
I took him for Intro to Lit, this class was such a joke. He spends way too long on poems. He does not grade with a rubric, so grading is entirely subjective. Not fair that he has his favorites. He only has 3 assignments, so if you bomb one; you are screwed. He rambles and has no clear objectives for any assignments. This class was horribly boring.
I took his online class and it had a decent amount of writing and lots of earing. He isn't that helpful and this class you need to stay on top of.
I took his online course for English 100. I found that he was extremely helpful and clear on the requirements for the class. If you do what is required and take his advice on where you need to improve, you will do well.
extremely hard course. He is very unclear and hard to understand. Tones of work required.
Dr. Hishmeh is great. He is very bright and helpful. His requirements are clear. I took his online class and he responded to all of my e-mails within 24 hrs. I learned a lot in this class, I would definitely suggest him to other students.
Great personality. He is very bright and helpful. His requirements are clear. I learned a lot in this class, I would definitely suggest him to other students.
Def need the textbook. He even says lingustics isn't his strong point.. yet teaches it. A lot of group work, but a good class. He gets off topic a bit which makes his quizzes hard.
I consider this: The methodology of teaching is not the best to help to review the grammar. More clarity in the presentation of the material to learn.
Cool professor! Good class. He definitely has a different method of teaching, but I learned a lot and would recommend him to other students.
one of the more interesting classes at Palomar. Liked the casual, low-key approach. He didn't take himself too seriously, but knew alot about the topic.
He is a very cool guy, clear about what he is asking for on assignments, a good teacher and he is really attractive...so that helps.
Very hard course. His online ENG 100 has to read Moby D. And the first 24 chapters are due the first week! ontop of that you read for the book of Ralph Waldo Emerson, also hard to understand. Lots of work due every week, and you cannot understand what he is asking. Maybe his on camnpus class is better?
I realy enjoyed his class, he is very helpfull and clear about what he wants. also, he is very funny that you never get board in his class. my best professor ever, I will take my Eng 100 with him too.
His calss is very fun and he is clear about what he wants. As long as you do what he assigns, then you will be totaly fine in his class. I definitely recomend him to everyone.
Dr. Hishmeh is a tough professor. His tests are written/essay and there are identifications from the texts you read, but his reviews helped with the exams. I enjoyed the class overall and learned a lot. Our class gave him a hard time, but that didn't seem to get to him. He helps you if you ask and seems to enjoy teaching.
Hishmeh is a good professor. He is patient and helpful and answers your questions. He has high expectations but cares about students. But he keeps things light in class and can be funny. He is also h...o...t. :) He gives good suggestions about how you can improve your writing. He responds quickly to emails. I recommend this professor!
Very good looking guy. helpful and caring. Loved the way he always made class fun! DEF recommend him to anyone!
For the love of all that is holy and good, do not take this mans on line course. If you have questions you will be referred to the on line book. He is slow at grading and posting feedback. His prompts are vague and confusing. All deadlines are firm to the second and points are all or nothing.
His requirements were unclear and the papers were really hard. He's a tough grader and doesn't offer much help. You have to read a ton, 24 chapters the first week of class. If I had to do it again, I would take it on campus because he seemed like a nice guy when I would meet him for on-campus meetings. Don't take him if you can avoid it.
TAKE HIM
Professor is arrogant and unhelpful. A major case of a 'big' (he thinks) fish in a small pond, thinks he is center of our school and cares more about his reputation than helping students to be better writers.
Tough class. Lots of reading (Moby Dick and Ralph Waldo Emerson) and writing, but this is an English class so it was expected. If you put time and effort into your work you will do fine. I'm not a good writer by and means and I got an A.
This was a difficult class to take online. Teacher basically lets you teach yourself and as long as you hit the requirements for the weekly work he doesn't check ANYTHING other than your essays - which he will go over with a fine tooth comb. Completely ignore the peer review portion and go to the writing center instead.
He is a very fair professor. He will give you the benefit of the doubt, but if you don't put effort into this class, you won't pass.
Hishmeh is a fantastic teacher! I really enjoyed his class. He has a dark sense of humor so I can see how some people could think he is offensive, depends what kind of person you are but I think he is hilarious and cares about his studentsthe subject. Fun class! Would take again! Good choice in movies and literature.
I wouldn't recommended the class if you're looking for an effortless A, but if you're willing to put in the time and effort it is certainly a rewarding experience.
Best professor! He's a sarcastic and teases but in the most loving way. His lectures are down to earth and easy to understand and I always learned a ton.
Hishmeh was a good professor. His feedback on papers are a little sloppy and hard to read. I took his class once a week and it was a pretty easy class all together. Read the texts, turn in every assignment and pay attention and you'll get an A if not, a B easily.
I took this class and by the way this instructor was really funny. But He will give you a hard test. Don't take this class.
Awesome professor. I had come into this class with it being my last chance to pass it and Hishmeh was incredibly helpful. Reading material was foundational and the (four 1,000 word and one 2,000 word) papers make you connect them to modern examples. Pay attention to lectures and ASK QUESTIONS if you are confused!
Richard is an amazing teacher. Definitely will take him for English100. He is very helpful, funny, and VERY lenient. I highly recommend him! Expect homework every class and for it to be due the following class. Doesn't test very much. Gives second chances. As long as you communicate well with him, he will negotiate with you. Super nice guy! :)
He hardly emails or schedules face to face. It was not uncommon for me to reach out and ask him for help and never be answered. He is definitely unorganized!! We had to write papers about things we had not gotten to in the class yet. Terrible professor, at least for online classes. I am a 4.0 student and this will be my first "W".
I'll start by saying I dropped the class. The material was intolerable. I write extremely well, but it seems he doesn't appreciate your own opinions, let alone the way you write. Don't take this class if you want to actually enjoy it and pass.
He is a really funny teacher and is respected by his students. He is also straight forward in the beginning and tells you that his class will not be easy. There is a lot of reading and the papers he assigns are a bit difficult but if you don't understand then just ask for help. Class is mandatory and he has a strict grading criteria.
Professor Hishmeh is pretty good. He's vague sometimes and he will pause mid sentence because he expects you to finish it, which lead to some awkward moments. I was mostly in the dark about my grade the entire semester because we had 3 things to do that would be graded (midterm, paper, finals). I thought I would get a C but somehow still got an A.
The best. Period.
Take Dr. Hishmeh! I've taken him for Intro to Lit as well as Linguistics and I plan to take him for Humanities as well. He's very funny and knowledgeable. However, this class will not be an easy A. Pay attention and put in effort and you'll be fine.
Great professor easy grader and easy to pass if u try hard enough. Would take his class again and again!!!
If you have to take English! Hishmeh is the way to go. Not only is the criteria self-explanatory. His lectures are super lively! Show up and put some effort. You will pass !
Excellent professor! Awesome lectures. Clear grading! Funny and very inspirational. He follows the book and is very good in explain what will be on the quiz. Only take 4 quizzes and complete 4 major writing assignments. You will love him!
This was my second time taking this course. Because I didn't pass the course last semester, I had to retake it. The last instructor gave me a D. Taking Mr. Hishmeh's class was great, and I received an A for all my hard effort. I have learned so much about writing structure. Totally recommend him! Fun class!
I was in the class 4 weeks. Didn't learn a thing. Very heavy reading and heavy Homework that you can barely understand. The essays make up a huge part of your grade. Little to no instruction on how to write the essays. I am a straight A student and this class was very difficult. He seems to be a nice guy, but this class is just out of wack.
Taking him currently, and it's terrible. You have an essay every week, tons and tons of reading, and 4 major papers that he grades extremely hard on. He has given me a C+ on every paper. This is an English 100 class, yet he grades like we're professionals. Every teacher gives me A's on my papers except for this guy. He is nice, but don't take him.
Took him for Shakespeare. Small class but great information. Paper, midterm, and a final. Made us memorize a sonnet, but it was kind of fun. Don't know what some of the people below are talking about.
Thoroughly enjoyed the class even as a science/pre-med major. I'd say it was my favorite lit class in my academic career and I never thought that I'd be excited to read. Defiently recommend. It's a college level literature class so these bad reviews are just from people complaining about reading. I mean what did you expect? Have an open mind:)
Good professor! He's really nice and gives good feedback. Prepares you for the final through out the class so he grades like other professors would grade your paper on the final. He's a tough grader but gives good feedback. He does make you read a lot but it's do-able. If you're an athlete hes understanding. Turn in your work on time.
Professor Hishmeh is great! For a hybrid course it went great. This was my first English college course and his feedback gave me confidence. If you put in the work and do ALL the reading, you could get an A. He is approachable both in person or via email. Don't procrastinate!
Took his ENG100 class online. Had mini practice essays leading up to one 2000-2500 research paper. Read three books and had to write journal entries of 500 words each week usually. Also, had to read the textbook and had quizzes on it. Not that bad of a class, although I feel like I did not learn that much about writing composition.
Overall, Professor Hishmeh is a great teacher. Gives great feedback, and structures his class so the writing builds up to the larger essays. The only negative comment I have, is that some of the assignments require a TON of work for very few points. There were times I spent 5+ hours on the "Writing-Up" assignments, which were only worth 2 points...
This was my favorite class by far last semester! I was taking 3 other courses at the same time and he made it really easy to pass and get an A. There are 5 essays in the course and he had us read 3 books along with writing some journals
Tests every week on chapters that are WAY too long. He doesn't use visual slides very often and his lectures are just sitting and listening to him talk for 2 hours. I reccommend recording him because the tests are more about lecture rather than your chapter notes.
I took Professor Hishmehs English 100 online. There is tons of homework that takes hours to finish. The reading amount isnt bad. But at the end of each week there is a quiz on the work and an alternating journal/essay. he is a very tough grader. I wouldnt take his class again online. It seemed to be organized like an in-class course.
Hishmeh is the worst, not sure why have a Ph.D in English if you can't teach. Got C- on all my papers, went to the Writing Center with a tutor for my final and still got a C-. Quizzes you on the least expected things, his grading skills are the worst, don't take his hybrid or anything from him. 2 hours just listening him talk is a waste of time.
Dont know what some of these people are talking about. Took English 202 this semester. Great books and great theme. Not an easy A, but learned more in this class than in any other English class Ive taken.
You get what you give. Just make sure to throughly read assigned books & pay attention during lecture. The good thing is doesnt grade as as harshly as I thought he would. The only thing that made this class stressful was me waiting until the day before to write my essays. Dont do that.
very time consuming assignments, worth very little points.
If you want to really learn critical thinking and writing, take Hishmeh's 202. One of the best I've had at Palomar. His class theme and readings really make you think and he gives good feedback on papers that helps you improve. Gives short practice papers at first to help. 2-3 pages.
I took the 6-week version of this class with Professor Hishmeh and it was worth it. He gives really great feedback and honestly keeping communication throughout the semester can really help. Honestly, I would take this class again or at least another one where he's the professor.
He assigned The American by Henry James, a 437-page novel, to be read in one week. I feel like that alone says a lot. Generally unpleasant class, professor was less-than responsive to questions through email. Standard fare for an English class, asinine amounts of reading, followed by a benign reading log, all leading up to an overwhelming midterm.
I'm in this class now. Don't know what the other reviewer means? The James novel was only 325 pages, less than 50 pages a day. Grading is fast and fair, and the readings are great. Haven't emailed the Prof much, but he seems to answer everything fast. Reading journals make you think and only require 150-300 words. Highly recommend! Great class!
Horrible. Absolutely horrible. Only class Ive ever struggled in
Best online class. Easy to Follow. Not too much work.
Online due to COVID. No lecture or weekly discussion board & I wish there had been. Provided reading guides & was responsive. HW was weekly journal. Some books were long but not all. You have to read ALL the books to do well on exams but the exam itself isnt hard. 2 books I got only 1/2 way thru (never finished The American!) & still got As.
I'm used to getting A's on all of my papers until now. No one in my class has gotten higher than an 85% on an essay. He takes points off for the smallest of things. Journal entries are due almost every week. There are 5 essays, the last two combined are worth 50% of your grade. You have to read the books to pass the quizzes. Don't take this class.
Great class. Good books and good paper topics to go with the readings. Not too many books to buy. Just two novels and a play. Last comment on RMP thought it was weird to have to read to pass the quizzes. I dunno? It is college and this Prof treats us like college students.
Aalways looked forward to going into his class.
8 Wk Fast Track- Wrote 7 Essays. Hard Class because the essays and poems we read were difficult to understand. The essay writing prompts were also difficult. 3 high school students attended and only 1 made it to the end. Great Professor. He will really challenge your critical thinking skills and writing ability. Which is expected. Good Luck
The class was very simple!! Short writing prompt each week, but he gives great feedback on your writing. Heavily based on creative writing rather than research essays. He doesn't grade too harshly and is super nice.
This was way above the average asynchronous course. Really put together and thought out readings. Don't use AI. He's on to it. If you do your own work, he gives great feedback.
Just got my grade. 88.86%. He gave me an A. I feel like I earned it. Challenging papers and books, but really fair and organized. Hard to cheat and use a AI. He caught a bunch of people on the first major essay. Looks like some haters were mad about it. 2 major papers, journals, reading quizzes. Only had to buy 1 novel. 11 bucks total.
This class was definitely hard for me because there are no slides to follow. You have to be very concentrated in class because every word he says will most likely be on a quiz or exam. Only 2 exams and 3 quizzes. Definitely get the textbook, and study a lot to pass the class. Go to his office hours and ask questions so you can pass.
This is one of the best professors I've ever had, genuinely. He seems so strict the first week or so, and then you realize it's because he's passionate about the subject and teaching as a whole. The lectures are organized, the study guides are well put together, and the tests are literally a cake walk if you study. 10s across the board!
His class was straight to the point do the work and you get a good grade. When we read things in class I was confused but he did a great job at explaining the reading
Don't listen to the the bad reviews about tough grading. He's actually a softie that'll give you the grade you deserve. Yes there's a lot of work but I got more real life knowledge this last spring in his class than any other class previously. His activities actually are so thought-provoking there's zero boredom.
I took a hybrid class online/in person from July-August . I enjoyed his class it was fun, informative and he always lets you know what you can improve on. The professor also has a sense of humor he was a breath of fresh air, I'd definitely take his class again. Semper Fi!!
Out of many professors, Professor Hishmeh is by far my favorite. He's extremely knowledgeable and actually wants to see you succeed. Gets back to you extremely fast on email or canvas. For a G.E course, I actually took a lot from the class. Just an amazing professor all around and will definitely help you improve if you truly want it.
I learned a lot and I enjoyed most of the written assignments, which were the one's I was more nervous about. I didn't think I was too good at essays, but I got A's on both! His feedback was extremely helpful. Sadly, while juggling 3 classes during the summer, I missed 1 too many assignments to get an A. Do the extra credit (5 written prompts).
