Excellent insights! Great guy.
fun teacher, keeps you awake during those evening classes, great class
Awesome teacher! Great insights! Gives answers to test in class. Very very good!
I absolutely loved his classes. He also teaches a history class. Very insightful and interesting. A two-hour class goes by like nothing.
He is the best professor I have had at BYU. He is the man. Lectures are actually worth going to. Tests are not tricky and he gives easy points for attendance and reading.
Freaking beautiful class. Most beautiful class I've taken.
Great Teacher. Actually interesting lectures!
Positives: Interesting classes. Very educated. You learn a lot, but class is pretty easy. Downsides: If you need a lot of structure and organization, he's probably not your man.
Great teacher. Style is on the fly so he doesnt always remember exactly what he taught when he makes test Q's. He always dropped unfair Q's though. I never learned so much from a religion class. You are only tested on lecture notes not reading.
Fits the absent minded professor mold. Needs to get a grip on what he's doing and not be so loosey-goosey. He has a lot of say and is hard to shut up.
Great teacher-he is enthusiastic about the subject. You learn some things, but probably not as much as with other teachers. He is a little absent minded, but a great guy.
awesome teacher- evening classes go by in a flash, tests can be hard, but he always drops unfair questions. he's awesome - I learned a ton!
richy is the bomb digg.
He never lectured. The whole semester was guest lecturers. I've heard he's a good professor but I couldn't tell after taking this class. The work was semi-difficult.
Amazing Teacher! I have taken three of his classes and I would take more if I could! He knows what he's talking about, he is very clear in his lectures, and doesn't assign unreasonable tasks. His tests are easy IF you study.
He is fun and very personable, his tests are short and reasonable if you study, but be sure to attend the D&C class because all the questions are from lectures. I always enjoyed the class.
Tests are from the readings. You'll be fine as long as you read. Evening class but he always let us out early. Have to write lots of essays but short one-pagers that arent too difficult. Tests not bad.
Mostly had guest lecturers. There was a lot of outside work, especially at the beginning of the semester. I found the material interesting but the tests were hard. One page paper due almost every week.
Great lectures, lots of interesting facts. Really invited the spirit into class. Tests were a little tricky, really into nitty-gritty details mentioned in class.
Mostly guest lectures. Evening class, but always let out early. Papers were a pain with one due nearly every week. Tests were killer hard but it works out pretty good with grades in the end if you have turned in all your papers. I don't recommend the class though. Its do-able, but not my favorite
There were papers every week, Tests are on tiny details, not main ideas..if a study guide isn't given good luck! Lots of outside class time spent on videos and museum lectures. Overall I learned a lot but it was really time consuming, if you take the Wed. night class you ALWAYS get out early!
Test questions are not worded well, class lecture involved reading verse by verse and talking about things not important to new testament doctrine. Evidently he is a history teacher more than a new testament teacher. I would not recommend him for new testament.
Lectures are great. I have not had many better religion teachers.
Awful teacher! Tests are unrelated to material taught and he tests on material that you never learn. He never lectures - always guest lectureres, who are usually very boring. DON'T take this teacher.
He is by far the most caring teacher I've ever had, religion included. He actually wants his students to succeed (something I question about many other religion teachers), and cares more about us knowing that he cares about us than about the class curve, etc., which is very refreshing in a teacher
Dr. Holzapfel is incredible. He really cares about his students, and he loves what he teaches.
By far the best religion class(es) I've taken. Incredibly engaging, spiritual and fun. Cares about students more than any other teacher I know. This fall I will take my 3rd class from him. Easy A if you take copious notes and study for his tests.
Studied forever for the tests, but they were impossible to study for very well. Guest lecturers were nice, but not worth taking the class!
AWFUL TESTS. Interesting lectures, really nice guy, and he provides opportunities for extra credit. The tests were more a matter of luck than studying, with really ambiguous questions. Would not recommend his class.
I think basically he's awesome for religion, and not so awesome for history. He knows a ton about it, it's just not his strong suit as far as actually teaching it. So if you're going to take a calss from him, make it a religion class.
His tests never covered what he said they would. It seemed like the TA's ran the class. The guest lecturers were boring. I wouldn't recommend him for history.
His tests were way too hard. Are required to read one of his books which was way boring. I do NOT recommed him unless you want to work hard and then fail anyway.
I went into this class at the end of my sophmore year w/ a 4.0 GPA. I studied my butt off and w/ no success. Guest lecturers were okay, TA was nice, WOULDLN'T recommend the class.
One of the most Christ-like teachers on campus. He practices what he teaches and loves students. If you have a problem he will help you through it and he gives tond of extra credit if you want it.
This was really awesome and it was all thanks to Bro. H! He is one of the most caring professors on campus and although he expects a lot out of his students, he is also very helpful and understanding. I would recommend this class to anyone looking for an intellectual challenge and a really great experience.
His lectures were AMAZING! His tests were pretty hard. I would study a lot and still not get an A. But the plus is that you learn so much and he connects the American founding with the Gospel. You have to read the text and study, but he is SOO helpful.
Good teacher, good lectures, mild tests. End of story.
This was an incredibly easy class. I had a high enough grade in there that I didn't even have to take the final and still got an A. Just do the reading and you'll be fine. Prof Holzapfel was a great teacher. He cares about the students and will do whatever he can to help you do well in the class.
Where else could I leave a discussion of the Bible its relation to slavery nearly in tears? Brother Holzapfel brought the spirit in to our discussions nearly every class and he always sought to teach us the human aspects of history - not just the events. I loved this course.
His tests are too detailed. You have to memorize your notes to get above 50%. He's too busy to even learn your name, let alone answer questions you might have. Doesn't really care whether you do good or not.
Some of his tests were a little tough for me, but Dr. H was a great teacher, and his lectures were amazing. He brought the spirit into so many aspects of American history, and he's willing to help anyone who asks.
just an awesome guy... this is what you want for a religion teacher... i've taken a few classes from him... seriously,, he's a stud....
Maybe his religion classes are great (I don't know, I haven't taken one), but do NOT!!!!!!!! I repeat NOT!!!!!!!!!! take History from him. It is excruciatingly hard without the benefit of being interesting and enlightening. I am a senior and it is the WORST class I have taken at BYU..
Fun, helpful, and his tests are really easy
He is awesome
great lecturer. great guy. contagious enthusiasm for the gospel. More objective approach to the NT as opposed to some who approach the scriptures from a spiritual standpoint. I felt like the NT came to life more. My only complaint was he let his TA write the tests and they were rediculous but grading was lenient anyway.
he lets his TA write the tests, which is too bad, cuz the TA is kind of a jerk. overall, a good class though.
A great teacher that has enjoyable lectures. The class includes a lot of reading, but if you truly want to learn something about American History, take this class! Plus if you do everything asked, the TA, Chris, does a great job writing the tests and helping you out.
Amazing professor!!!!!! Do not miss his lectures....one thing that I didn't like is that there are only 4 tests and a paper, and if you're like me, you might need some cushion assignments. But other than that, it was such a great class!
Mentaly and spiritually stimulating. We had 3 midterms (drop the lowest score) 2 papers and a final which contained a lot of questions from midterms. The Midterms are 25 q's- 22 of which are "gimme" questions if you go to lecture, which are great! Go to reviews with the TA.
Dr. Holzapfel is one of the best teachers at BYU. His lectures are amazing and he does really cool stuff throughout the semester like have class outside, buys pizza for everyone, takes the class to the Museum of Art, and he brings candy all the time. And, not to mention, he really knows his stuff and his lectures are awesome.
What a class and an even better professor! I loved this class and recommend it to everyone rather than Am. Heritage. His lectures are amazing and you can tell he just loves the subject. Take this class from him. Really easy class. Just work with the TA's.
Iam a sinor in history and dr.h class was the best class I ever took at BYU. People say his test are hard but only if you dont do your readings or go to class. Great teacher and great class.
Dr. H. is one of the best professors you will ever have. Class is can be overwhelming at times because he covers so much in the lectures but if you take good notes you will be fine. Doing the readings before each class is extremely helpful and will really help you earn a good grade. Do the study guides and even though it's a lot of reading do it
Dr. Holzapfel teaches with passion- he actually cares about what he is teaching. I always came away from class with something to think about. The lectures made me want to be better. The one downer- you basically have to teach yourself all of the test material. Be sure to do the readings-there are a lot- good luck.
This class definitely always gives you something to think about. Dr. H really cares about the material, but not much from his lectures are on the tests. To get a good grade: read everything, and on time. Do the study guides, then memorize them. Start the paper well ahead of time, and form study groups. There is a ton of reading, so good luck!
I love Dr. H.! His classes are both incredibly interesting and instructive as well as spiritual. He has a knowledge of Greek and Jewish cultures and languages which helped me to understand and become involved in the scriptures on a whole deeper level. He is kind and caring and likes to shake everyones' hand as they leave and smile and wish them joy
Dr. H is awesome!!! Took him for honors D&C 2nd half. You will have to work, but this class is THE most enlightening religion class I've taken at BYU. If you're looking for an easy A, it's not for you, but if you're looking to grow intellectually and spiritually, there is no better! Honestly, everyone should take him!
Great teacher who loves what he teaches. He repeats himself a lot so just coming to class a lot will help you avoid having to study at all. He has you read but chapter headings are usually enough since he mostly teaches concepts not facts straight out of the Book of Mormon.
I love Dr. Holzapfel. He really cares about his students. And for his class you get to do fun stuff like go to the MOA and do a service project. But you do have to keep a blog for the class which I didn't really like.
Prof. Holzapfel is great! He really cares about his students and his lectures are fascinating. A lot of reading, but the tests aren't hard. One paper is assigned but if you go to the TAs for help it helps a lot. Definitely take this class because it is a much better alternative to American Heritage.
Professor Holzapfel was an excellent professor; one of the best religion professors I've had at BYU. He really knows the time period of Christ, and helped us to understand the scriptures in a new way. Extremely spiritual. He really cares about his students - he even sent us cards in the mail.
Great teacher, really passionate about what he's teaching, and cares a lot about his students. Test was NOT like the study guide, but that's really more of the TAs fault. Really intellectually enlightening. We watched a lot of movies, had a weekly blog assignment, and quizzes, so keep up on those because they do influence your grade. Extra Credit!
I've taken three classes from him and absolutely LOVED every second of every class!! I took Honors 240, New Testament Honors, and D&C Honors. Honors 240 was a little difficult with a lot of reading, but the amazing way he taught it made up for that, the religion classes were simply amazing and I've never learned so much in my life!!
Dr. H is such a brilliant, passionate, and truly good man!! I?ve taken Honors 240 and D&C from him and plan on taking more. He loves every single one of his students and strives to accommodate them in any way possible. Honors 240 is much easier and less work than American Heritage. And you learn so much more from him.
Best teacher I've that at BYU. He is great! I've graduate and I'm going back for a continuing education.
What an amazing Man! Best classes ever! If you miss one of his classes you miss one of the best BYU experiences. Life changing class.
Dr. H is awesome. He's going on a mission for the next three years, so he won't be around, but he is the best professor I have had at BYU. Everyone should try to take a class from him!
Dr. H is awesome. He's going on a mission for the next three years, so he won't be around, but he is the best professor I have had at BYU. Everyone should try to take a class from him!
Dr. H really cares about his students, and helps them learn as much as possible. He is very knowledgeable and ties in different aspects of life and the gospel in lecture. He teaches by the spirit, and you can tell he really cares about the subject. He is now a mission president, so he'll be back in 3 years. At least I really hope he keeps teaching.
I wouldn't take a Doctrine Covenants class from any other professor. He is simply amazing! The class is challenging but I learned amazing things about our church and loved every minute of it. He has a perfect mix of lecture and testimony and is a very powerful speaker. Best of all, he genuinely cares about each of his students.
This is a really top-notch professor, and he knows the D&C well. If you attend class, do your homework, and take good notes, and you'll love it.
Genuinely interested in your well-being. Really shows a love of the gospel while still looking at the New Testament from a historical point of view. His quizzes were a little frustrating because I would get a couple questions wrong here or there leading to an overall decrease in my grade. Always really enjoyed being in class.
I loved this professor. He is a fantastic man who has a deep spiritual understanding of historical events. He knows his stuff and you can tell that he just loves teaching. What a great guy. I learned a lot in his class. His passion for the subject was very inspiring.
Fabulous religion class. Dr. H's lectures are fascinating. He teaches his own historical contextual knowledge, not just reused institute manual quotes. This guy is why you came to BYU to take religion classes, take him.
I took him for American Gov't. He has really interesting lectures, although it was a once a week class so they got kind of long and drawn out sometimes.
I wouldn't take this class from anyone else. The best way to take American Heritage by far. He cares about students and will change his class to help them more. Take this class for sure!
TAKE THIS CLASS. its easy (no hw really, just a weekly blog and quiz on blackboard) dont have to buy and textbooks, and HE IS AMAZINGLY SMART. his written TONS of books but isnt condescending and just wants to share his knowledge with you. he knows mounds not just about religious texts, but the historical context surrounding them.
Great class. Very interesting. Theme for the class is slavery, and we look at it from an LDS perspective. So fascinating! Quizzes are a piece of cake if you go to the TA review sessions. The only paper is 2-3 pages. He brought us treats three different times. Holzapfel is great. So kind and genuinely interested in his students. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
The best religion teacher I've ever had (Both halves of NT also took for American Government and Society), lecture is always entertaining and the quizzes and the final are easy if you pay attention. not graded based on attendance, but you have to go to pass the class
Best professor I've ever had. Such interesting insights and cares about every single person in the class. Weekly quizzes, blogs, and reading. One paper, but totally manageable. I enjoyed going to class, and left thinking about what I learned the rest of the week. too bad he's leaving on a mission!
One of the most caring professors I have ever had at BYU. You can tell by the way he teaches that he isn't just there for a job as a lot of professors are. He truly cares about the success of his students and wants them to learn and do their best. Simple weekly quizzes and one short paper.I hated history before this class, now I actually enjoy it.
Dr. H is absolutely incredible. He loves his students and it shows. His knowledge of the gospel is extraordinary and he teaches it to the class in a very understandable way. Would recommend for anyone!
Dr. H is my favorite religion professor on campus! He comes from a history background, so he talks a lot about the history behind the scriptures. He never scripts his lectures, which I love, and he is always willing to answer questions students ask. Definitely focused on how to best help the students!
Very kind teacher. Interesting ideas and generally very sound doctrine.
Professor Holzapfel hands down has been my favorite religion professor at BYU. Not only is he one of the most knowledgeable religion professors I've had, but he is an exceptional teacher. I honestly looked forward to going to class every day. He also seemed to care about students more than any other religion professor I've had.
Dr. Holzapfel is such a spiritual giant! I loved his class, and learned so much! He really cares about all of his students individually and makes sure to shake everyone's hand every period. His just got called to be a mission president and he will do an amazing job. Weekly blogs and quizzes aren't too bad. Take his class!
What an amazing class. I learned a lot. He is very fair, with his opinions, views and policies. The blog assignments are great, the readings are great, and the focus of the class is enlightening. He really knows what he is doing, and is very good at it. We even watched movies, took field trips, ate snacks, and weekly got to attend incredible l
This class is excellent. I absolutely love it. I highly recommend it.
While notetaking can sometimes be laborious due to the amount of material he covers (LOTS of reading!!) and how fast he goes from point to point, he is a great professor! Excellent lecturer who has real experience and is incredibly knowledgeable about his subject. Weekly quizzes and blogs aren't usually too bad, but they are sometimes difficult.
Dr. Holzapfel is a really caring teacher and a great lecturer. He does his best to structure the class so that it best helps the students, rather than "I'm the teacher and I'll do things how I want." I'm not much of a history person but he really helped me make connections and appreciate history and and the Gospel in relation to it. Recommended!
Dr. Holzapfel is a brilliant professor who gives great, insightful lectures. He really knows what he's talking about, and makes wonderful connections between historical and religious topics. The textbook, however, is VERY dry -- quite a chore to read, though necessary for the weekly quizzes.
Professor Holzapfel does a great job in his lectures. He combines gospel truths and history of the restoration with the establishment of the American government. Lots of reading and weekly quizzes that aren't too difficult. One paper and also an easy weekly blog posting. Very interesting and an excellent alternative to American Heritage.
I honestly expected more from all the ratings about Dr. H. He is a brilliant person and has a love for what he teaches. Some things that I didn't like that made the class less enjoyable was the amount of information covered that makes note taking the focus as opposed to feeling the Spirit. I also felt that the quizzes were uneccesarily difficult.
Dr. Holzapfel is a wonderful teacher who really brings the spirit into the classroom. You can't be in the same room with him without feeling how much he loves and cares about his students. Sometimes the quizzes ask for really obscure dates and facts, but generally, they aren't too hard. I would definitely take classes from him again.
Professor Holzapfel is such an awesome teacher! He really knows what he is talking about! He is also so spiritual and the things he teaches are so interesting in how they relate to the gospel! The weekly tests and blogs are not too difficult as long as you attend class and take notes! But take from him! Hands down!
Lectures in class are interesting and spiritually uplifting. I would highly recommend him as a professor. This is definitely a class you have to study for. The homework load isn't bad. There's a weekly blog and quiz in addition to the class reading that isn't too time consuming.
Holzapfel is an awesome professor who really knows what he's talking about and loves to teach it. He is willing to work with his students and really loves them and wants them to do well. Taking notes is a little difficult because he goes off on tangents alot, albeit interesting tangents, but if you try you are going to do well in the class.
He is a great teacher, who is passionate about what he teaches. He does cover a lot of material, but is fair in his testing. His TA's are pretty useless, however. The paper he has you write for this class was also a very disappointing experience overall. Learned a great deal.
He is a great teacher. Really knows his stuff. A lot of outside reading was required, but the class was not too difficult. Thoroughly enjoyed it and received an A.
Great professor who teaches with passion and cares a lot about his students. You won't go wrong taking any classes from him. (Plus, it doesn't hurt that he does fun stuff like pizza parties and museum field trips.)
Honors NT is awesome. The lectures are awesome; you won't want to miss class. If you do the work, you'll get a good grade. Dr. H is one of the best teachers I've had at BYU.
Br. Holzapfel is an amazing teacher. He is so kind and approachable and his lessons are not only academic but very inspirational. Over and over I have been extremely grateful that I took his class. The class is very easy. Besides reading, you do a weekly blog entry and weekly quiz. I highly recommend!
Wonderful teacher from whom I learned alot! He will be gone on a mission for 3 years, but when he comes back, take a class from him, if you can!
Really fascinating course. Dr. Holzapfel is open to suggestions and implemented them in his class, even mid-semester. I absolutely LOVED the variety in the class--going to museums, special collections in the library, it made the course more relevant and enjoyable. Didn't like being quizzed on the reading "Between the Testaments" though.
Dr. H is an incredibly thoughtful man and an engaging lecturer, but the class was frustrating. TA's were ineffectual--provided false information, brushed off serious concerns, and were generally unhelpful. The weekly quizzes were a nightmare, often riddled with half-truths and downright wrong answers, the wording confusing, unclear, and ambiguous.
Dr. H is awesome! His lectures are really interesting and he definitely knows what he is talking about. He has an amazing ability to relate things together that I never connected before. Paper for the class was kind of confusing, but definitely recommend this class for anyone!! :)
I loved this class! Dr. H. is a great teacher who challenges you to think. If you do the weekly readings and go to class then this is a pretty low stress class, as far as grades go. Take honors 240 from him if you can!
This was an interesting and fun class. Our section met once a week. We had a weekly quiz and a weekly blog. Lecture was really interesting and break-out sessions reviewed the material covered in the reading.
Wow, what a great class. He will be gone for a few years, but after that, I totally recommend him.
Dr. H's class was great! I have never really like history that much, but now I basically love it thanks to him and actually having to read a history textbook. This class is definitely worth it. I never took American Heritage, but I hear it's not fun, and this class was very enjoyable.
Dr. H. is a great professor; it's clear that he cares about his students as well as the subject matter. Although he does go off on tangents occasionally, they're usually humorous. He's one of the few professors I've ever had who can handle a long lecture and maintain interest. Some quiz questions seem a little random, but overall the class is good.
He's fine. The best part is his knowledge of church history is so vast he often as interesting anecdotes to add to his teaching.
way Solid professor. Loved his personal stories because they helped give perspective to his lectures. He helped me to see the Pauline letters from a different persepective than I had before. he has a really strong testimony and was not afraid to share it with us, and really invested himself in the course. Overall, the best religion class Ive had!!
One of the best professors I've had at BYU. He really knows his stuff and you can tell that he cares about his students as well.
Dr. H is the best! I have taken every class he teaches at BYU. He knows the material and is focused on helping students learn. His class focuses on the historical context of the scriptures. Don't take the class if you want inspirational stories or stand-up comedy. He teaches you the context of the scriptures and allows you to apply the concepts.
Dr. H is a wonderful religious scholar to study under. He has unique insights and the doctrine he teaches is sound. The quizzes sometimes feel like they come out of nowhere...you may feel like "Wha? I don't remember talking about that" but, you can probably figure it out if you've done the readings.
Great professor! He has great insights into the scriptures and takes time to relate them to the hear and now. He provides many opportunities to enhance learning like the Book of Mormon seminar, MOA visits, and the Crandall Museum and when these activities took extra time he would compensate us. I would strongly recommend him.
Awesome Professor! A lot of his lectures were over my head with so much information, but I feel like I learned a lot and and I still did well in the class. He provides many 'extra' opportunities and really cares about his students. I would recommend this class!
Dr. H is a great teacher. Honors 240 was one of my favorite classes at BYU. This class was the best alternative for American Heritage. You have a weekly blog and quiz but they're not bad because the TAs help a ton. Dr. H's lectures were interesting and I looked forward to going to class. Take this class!
There was definitely a lot of reading. I enjoyed the class and I could tell he cares about the subject. I liked having the weekly quizzes (just make sure you do them)and the blog posts gave me an opportunity to have to think about the experiences I had in the class as well as the topics we were discussing.
The lectures were great - informative and interesting. He has you write a weekly blog post, which is usually helpful. I enjoyed this class.
He's a great lecturer. I really enjoyed class each week. There is a lot of reading, but it's excellent material. Make sure that you have time to devote to this class--it's worth it. He'll be gone for three years as a mission president, but when he comes back, take his class if you can! It will be a high-light of your semester for sure :-)
I love this professor. It's too bad that he is leaving the university. If you can get into his class when he's back, do it. I can't believe how wonderful I feel when I leave his class because of his ability to teach the gospel.
I really loved Honors 240 because of Dr. H. He is a wonderful teacher and I enjoyed every minute of class! :) Take him if you get the chance!
Dr. Holzapfel did a good job of helping students gain a good but different perspective than most textbooks teach you. Weekly quizzes make up your grade with a paper due early in the semester and a final. Weekly quizzes aren't bad if you study a little and go to class and do the reading. Good class. Definitely better than Am Her from what I've heard
Fantastic teacher!! Dr. H is one of the best New Testament scholars on campus. His class is not too difficult if you are attentive and take good notes, which is not hard to do. He gives weekly quizzes and has numerous extracurricular activities. I highly recommend him
Dr. H's class was the highlight of my semester!!! He is so knowledgeable and I really wish he taught all my classes! He lectures w/o any notes & knows so much. Weekly quizzes can be tricky if you don't take careful notes. Pay attention! You walk out of class wanting to be a better person. AMAZING professor--too bad he's leaving for a few years.
The class was well organized, but something about Dr. H's personality rubbed me wrong. The TAs are great, though, and super helpful.
This class is definitely a good alternative to American Heritage. Dr. H makes the material come alive. He's an expert on his subjects and is very passionate about what he teaches. It was helpful for me since I previously had little interest in American History. This class requires time and effort to do well.
Dr. Holzapfel is a great teacher. He explains concepts clearly. He truly wants each student to do well, and care about them both in and out of class. Class consisted of quizzes and blogs which are easy to complete after lecture. I recommend thank New Testament from him. I appreciate and understand the New Testament so much more now.
Really great teacher and good person. Really cares about the students and shakes everyone's hand before class. He likes to integrate a variety of tools in teaching, at least 2 movies, the printing office and the MOA. Definitely recommend as an alternative to american Heritage. Too bad he's going to be gone for 3 years :(. he rocks!!
Good guy who tries hard. Quizzes were often confusingly written or based off of nit-pickey questions.
He is very knowlegdable about the scriptures but it was hard to know what to take notes on during class discussion.
Fantastic Teacher! Share's a lot of personal opinions but always backs them up with facts. Helps you to think in new ways about the gospel. Highly recommended (a very fair grader).
Dr. H is the best religion professor I've had at BYU. He knows his history, he knows his doctrine, and he has a strong testimony. As long as you pay attention in class you will do well. I learn new things in every lecture, and I highly recommend any of his classes to anyone, as long as you intend on attending his lectures.
Dr. Holzapfel is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. The class is not difficult if you go, take notes, and do everything he asks of you. He likes to give gifts. :) I really had an excellent experience in this class, and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in an Honors New Testament course.
Very concerned about his students. Great lectures. Good alternative to American History.
This was a great class. Dr. H really cares about his students. I learned a lot of new things.
Amazing class!
He puts the G in genius. Most interesting class I've taken at BYU
Great teacher with plenty of knowledge on the subject. His passion for the subject is contagious.
His lectures were very interesting and full of material. One difficulty was I didn't always know what was important to take notes on. He assigned weekly blog posts that helped me think about the topics we covered. He cares about his students and shared his testimony a lot.
Dr. H is fantastic! He knows so much about the scriptures and always has very interesting lectures. If he wasn't leaving for three years, I would definitely take another class from him.
Great Class. He uses the Doctrine and Covenants as the manual for the class so you won't have to but lots of books.
Great guy, very interesting class about the D&C. You kind of get the sense that he doesn't really care about grades as much as teaching you important stuff. He is very accomplished and has lots of good insights. He is going on a mission soon, so you might have to wait 3 years before you can take his class, but do it if you have the chance!
Dr. Holtzapfel is a great teacher, he really knows what he's talking about, especially when talking about the New Testament, because this is what he did his doctoral studies about. He tends to jump around a lot, but you will definately learn new things in his class.
Richard is very approachable and you can be sure that he genuinely cares about his students. Also, he comprehensions the material and can explain its applicability to oneself. I recommend taking any class you can from him simply because it will be valuable to you personally.
AMAZING TEACHER! I felt like I walked out of the temple every class. He gave us just the right amount of doctrine and spiritual knowledge. It was GREAT! :D
great professor. Really interested in helping you out and getting to know you. Interested in helping you get the most out of your BYU experience. Sometimes a little hard because he gave us such detailed information but a pretty doable class.
Great Teacher! Really loves the material. Quizzes can be difficult especially if you missed class. Gives just the right balance of personal experiances and religious background.
I've had Dr. H for both halves of the D&C and also REL A 221. He is a great professor who provides a very uplifting and inspiring class. I've learned much from him and I suggest taking his classes. I wish I could have taken his Honors 240 class before he left but I was unable to do so.
Best religion teacher I've ever had. Extremely knowledgeable and a great resource. I've never had so many great and new insights is such a short time period. I honestly loved every minute of class.
While I love Dr. H, I feel like I learned a ton of 'fun facts' about the New Testament, and not a concrete idea of what happened. He is knowledgeable and kind. He truly brings the Spirit into his class. The blogs are a waste, and the quizzes can be slightly unfair.

He is a very powerful and inspiring teacher. I learned many things that I will remember and treasure for the rest of my life. Only complaint: he has lots of unplanned anecdotes, which are great and add spirit and personality to the class, but the result is that sometimes there are details about facts on quizzes that we barely touched in class.
Overall good class & professor. Much better than american heritage. Heavy readying load. Dr. H really believes in what he's teaching and tries to make a person connection with class members. The TAs were a joke. It seems to me that they only got the job through personal connections. They didn't know their facts and were of little help.
I love Dr. H! If you really want to learn about the context and culture of the New Testament, this is the class for you. A very knowledgeable, wise, humble man who combined intellectual learning with the Spirit.
Lectures are like drinking from a firehose. I marked 'mandatory' because it is the majority of material tested on. Amazing depth, will take on any question. Relies on TA for a lot, but is department head. Loves dates and numbers. Text is D&C.
Very enjoyable class. More history and evidence than shared personal viewpoints on religious controversies
Great teacher. He does a lot of outside of class experiences that relate to class (i.e. seminars, MOA, etc). Also, weekly blogs, but no papers. Great professor. Knows what he's talking about - strongly recommend.
Good guy. Really wants to help students. Too bad he is leaving.
Good solid class. Be sure to read and understand syllabus-understand what is expected of you. From what I hear about AM Heritage, this is the way to go if you can handle somewhat of a heavy workload. While sometimes hard to follow with writing your notes, Dr H's lectures are enlightening. Do the readings, go to breakout sessions, etc...you'll be ok
Awesome professor, amazing class. I'm a 5th year senior, and this has honestly been the most enjoyable experience I've ever had in a class. My expectations were low as I hate history, but this made it interesting and fun. Dr H. is very passionate about his work and it shows. Kinda intense workload but it's organized and easy to manage. Great class.
Great lecturer, and the class itself is great. There are a lot of class activities that keep thing interesting. This is the way American Heritage should be taught.
Great teacher. He is passionate about what he teaches, presents it in a clear manner, and is willing to help you understand/do well. Highly recommend him.
Weekly readings and quizzes along with in-class lectures/discussions. Not hard to do well if you put in all the time for reading etc. Includes fun movies/experiences. Overall a pretty decent class, though we also had a great TA and that makes a difference. Sometimes acts as thought who you know is more important than who you are, but still good
Dr. Holzapfel is a great lecturer, but has a bit of an ego. Grading procedures are clear. He doesn't really respond to student feedback or answer questions. Expect to learn a lot from him.
He is a great teacher and I loved his lectures! He even bought us all donuts and hot chocolate a couple times. Super nice guy and you can tell he really cares. Weekly quizes that I underestimated in the beginning which killed me. Its not an easy A if thats what your looking for, but you will feel the spirit and learn ALOT. He knows his stuff
The class was okay, and getting an A isn't too difficult. But, Holzapfel told a lot of self-aggrandizing stories (especially a/b when he was a mission president), talked constantly about his connections to church hierarchy, and generally seemed a little full of himself. His knowledge of history/doctrine is okay, but I would recommend someone else.
Holzapfel is kind and genuinely concerned about his students, but his tests are absurd. They are all about dates, years, and section numbers, so get ready to memorize what every single D&C section talks about in fine detail to do well on the tests. He's also pretty self-aggrandizing and will tell you all about his lunches with general authorities.
If you want to spend your semester focused on memorizing all the little facts, dates and section numbers, just to forget them right after the semester, take it from him! If you want to be spiritually touched from reading the D&C take it from someone else! He also likes to brag about how he is close with church leadership and byu athletes.
Dr. Holzapfel is incredibly knowledgeable in the scriptures and with life advice but his quizzes and tests were so tough it made it hard to concentrate in class. Mountains of Extra Credit were the only way I got an A in the end. Pay lots of attention in class to the minor details because that's what he quizzes on.
I don't know where most are coming from here in regards to his personality, but I found Dr. Holzapfel incredibly kind & helpful (he really cares about his students), & lectures are terrific. He really brings the Spirit. Extra assignments aren't bad, & really add to the class. Testsquizzes are on Learning Suite, closed-book, pretty straightforward.
One of my favorite professors this semester! His lectures were informative and inspirational. I felt the spirit almost every class and learned a lot. He really care for his students and truly shows it. I'm glad I took Foundations of the Restoration from him.
He really cares about his students and wants us to be happy. He has a wealth of knowledge about the gospel and shares it with others.
Dr. H is one of the most caring professors I've ever had and I'm super glad I took his class. He really helped strengthen my testimony of the restoration and I never had to worry about my grade (finished with a 105%)
He is very loving and has an obvious passion for the Gospel. He goes out of his way to make classes and tests very interactive and learner enabling
Brother Holzapfel is absolutely incredible! He wants you to succeed! All of your essays (even group ones) are one page only! Gives extra credit! There is a decent amount of reading but it is all designed to increase your understanding of the Restoration! I would take this class 10 times over if I could! Focused on increasing your testimony!
Dr. Holzapfel was one of my favorite professor. All the tests and essays were online (3 tests, 3 essays) and they were fairly easy. During one of the tests I got into a car accident and wasn't able to complete the test, he worked with me so that the test did not have a major negative effect on my grade.
Dr. Holzapfel is by far the best religion teacher that I've had at BYU. His lectures are incredible and inspiring and his stories are super interesting and relevant to the topic that is being discussed. It's a lot of reading, but he cancels class when there is a lot of reading. 10/10 would take again.
It's worth it to take Dr. Holzapfel's class just for the person he is. He is a highly qualified historian and historian. His personal experiences were my favorite, and the way he cared individually about his students. As far as the class goes, there was a lot of reading, easy essays, and tests were a little nit-picky, but extra credit will help.
By far one of the top religion teachers I have ever taken. His insights into church history is eye-opening. I highly recommend him. It was a lot of reading at the beginning, but it is worth it.
Dr H is awesome but the class is pretty difficult. I took it over spring term so it went twice as fast, but it was still more work than my other classes. We had about two hours of reading/homework every day; eight essays in eight weeks; and super nit-picky tests. Still wasn't bad though, and the insight and testimony were worth it.
I've never been a huge fan of how BYU religion classes are taught but Dr. H gave me hope. :) This class focused on helping us gain a greater testimony of the Restoration and to seek and not assume. The reading was totally doable, assignments were easy, and I saw my testimony grow so much. Dr. H cares a lot about his students and even brings snacks!
He is the best Professor I've ever had! He makes church history understandable and fascinating. I recommend him to everyone!!!
