Funny, very smart, very clear and helpfull. I loved the class and got my best grades ever.
Rich is rare in respecting pre-professional students as a professor. He is funny and clear, and is not scraed of giving A when earned. Truly one of the best around.
best professor in the department
Rich is the most friendly, down to earth professor at the school

Rich is the best prof. I have had, even though I haven't taken any classes from him for several semesters he still remembers my name. He really cares about the success of his students.
Richard is one of the best teachers and mentors on campus. The class is easy, but he is more concernd about you learning and enjoying the topics he lectures on. Take advantage of his wisdom and knowledge and friendship. I absolutely love this man and he goes above and beyond for his students to help them in whatever they need. He is the man!
I loved to going to this class. Rich is the coolest Professor. I am so glad I took this class.
SUMMER PHYSICS I&II: Very challenging. Have your TAs setup ALL the online HW every day before you go home and don't fall behind. Lecture not very helpful. PHYSICS OF THE HUMAN BODY and WILDERNESS MEDICINE: super easy upper level classes for the semester when you are also taking hard classes like Organic Chem, Anatomy, Physiology, etc. (his words)
This guy is the man. Who would complain about an easy yet good and interesting Physics class. I haven't ever commented on here but will for this guy. Great and easy class.
Rich is an amazing professor. His classes are fun and interesting, he wants everyone to do well, and he really cares about his students. Also, I asked him for a letter of recommendation and he submitted it the very next day. Great guy.
Rich is by far, the most awesome professor I have had at the U. He is very funny, incredibly nice, and very passionate about what he is teaching. I have taken two courses literally only because of the fact he is teaching them. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone.
Rich is an amazing teacher. He cares a lot about making sure you understand the topics. It is a very easy class if you have taken or are in hard classes like anatomy, physiology, etc. He's amazing!
Rich is such a nice relatable guy. He doesn't really care about grades, he is just out to teach and for you to actually learn! Great information taught! I would definitely recommend taking this class! The demonstrations and guest lectures are awesome! Attendance is not required, but I never wanted to miss a day! :)
Best professor ever
He is my FAVORITE professor. EVER. TAKE HIS CLASS. doesn't even matter which one. PHY3110 was awesome.
He is one of my favorite professors/people in my entire college career (if not my VERY favorite). He's hilarious, so knowledgable & makes the class SO much more interesting than a simple lecture! He makes the class and material fun and it's things that you'll actually be able to use in your life. I'd recommend this class & this professor to anyone!
I don't know if this rating should go here. He was listed as the professor for this class but I only met him once. It's an MCAT prep class with a new teacher each week. The class is super easy, show up, take the quizzes, get an A. It wasn't all that useful though. It helps for a quick overview and to stress you into studying.
Rich is awesome! He is one of the nicest professors you will ever meet and would do anything for his students. The class isn't hard and he didn't fail a single person this summer!
His lecture is not organized. So sometimes assignment and lecture are not related each other. Moreover, he does not make test. But TA who makes Test problem does not come to class. So I do not recommand this class.
Rich hands out good grades to everyone. If you get in the 90s on every test, it doesn't matter because people that didn't work as hard will also get an "A". His lectures weren't organized, it seemed that he was unaware of what he had to cover that day. I learned all of the physics from the book and from the TAs. He also doesn't write the tests.
Got a 75 in physics this summer and got an A in both 1 and 2. The tests are very hard, his TA who doesn't come to class writes them so it is very hard to study for, but If you're dreading physics, take his summer classes, you get them both over with and it is relatively painless.
Great teacher! Great demonstrations and funny. I would defiantly suggest taking physics over the summer with Richard. Its a lot of work for the summer but defiantly worth him as a teacher.
Funny teacher, very laid back on grading, which I appreciated. Organization could have been a little better, but since I was coming straight from an overlapping class, it actually helped me not miss much of the lecture, so worked out in my favor. ;)
LOVED HIM! Funny and a very nice professor and at the end of the day he just wants us all to succeed in the class.
super cool professor
I highly recommend avoiding this class in the summer. I thought I would just get it over with but it bit me. So condensed and Shawn, the course marshall, is extremely hard. They gave out six A's out of 100ish students. Take it another time.
Awesome professor. I highly encourage that you take this class, it's incredibly interesting and he makes lectures fun. Tests are easy enough if you study for them. Definitely go to class and take notes on the lecture. Wildly helpful on the study guides and tests. TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOURE INTERESTED IN STUDYING MEDICINE OR DO A LOT OF OUTDOORS THING
Rich is dope!! Such a good teacher! Really cares about the students and them succeeding. Gives you every opportunity possible to succeed. Easier class to take to fulfill a Gen-Ed requirement. Helps out all the time and likes to get to know you. Lots of demonstrations that are awesome. Also pretty funny.
Rich is an amazing person and professor. Though I do wish he were a tad bit more organized, the pros cancel out that one con. He knows what he's talking about both in medicine and in outdoor recreation, and he's a super fun and hilarious guy. I learned so much in this class and you should absolutely take it hands down.
Dr. Ingebretsen is hilarious and an all-around awesome guy. Plus, the class is an easy A.
Rich was a very entertaining professor and the class certainly has some educational value, but around test time it can be difficult to grasp what his expects you to know. He was also tough to get a hold of outside of class, as he can be disorganized, so his canvas is confusing. Otherwise, Rich does a great job.
Rich is probably one of the coolest professors I have had my entire college career. Truly a awesome guy! He teaches an interesting class, and makes it super easy to understand. I thoroughly enjoyed this class -- and I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone!
Rich is easily the best professor I have had during my time at college. He truly cares about his students and does everything he can to help students learn and be successful. He uses demonstrations and videos to keep his lectures interesting. You will not regret taking a class from Dr Ingebretsen.
Rich is super freaking awesome. His class is interesting, his lectures are precise, and he is entertaining, which really helps keep focus. He is passionate about medicine and physics, and is a great professor. Go out of your way to take physics from him. You will not regret taking it over the summer, and you will have an excellent professor.
So nice
Rich is a real sport. He's hilarious, has funny stories to tell, and generally has really fun classes. He tries really hard to make sure all of his students do their best, learn what they can, and have a really good time. He's the real MVP.
Rich is the next Bill Nye. He just cares that you learn and he will do whatever needed to make sure you to well in his class. He is the funniest teacher and always entertaining. The class is super easy.
Hands down the best professor I have ever had! You learn so much from him, not just about the subject but about life. He is so nice and funny and is the kind of person you want to be around. He cares about his students and will do so much for them. Even though the class is easy, I have learned more from his class than the last 4yrs in engineering.
I took this class for a GE requirement that fulfills my "Physics" credit, and I'm so glad I took it instead of an actual physics class. It helped relate more to my major. HW is super easy. Rich is a gem. He tells you exactly what will be on the exam. Exams are super easy. If you need help during exams, he doesn't hesitate to help. Great class.
I do not have interest in the medical field, so I took Ingebretsen's course as a general elective. Long story short, if I had to take any general elective, I would want a professor like Ingebretsen. The lectures were enjoyable and he does a great job of making the material fun to learn. Seriously, he is an incredible professor.
I love Rich. Nicest professor, and he truly cares about his students. He knows his stuff (PhD in physics and also a medical doctor) and the demonstrations were excellent. I think this is the best professor I've had thus far. I don't usually enjoy physics, but everything learned can be reflected in normal life, so it was well worth it.
Rich is incredible and his class is actually entertaining. The assignments and quizzes can be a little tricky at times but they are all take home and you can use the book (and friends). This was a great first college course. I learned a lot, there were a lot of fun science demos, and honestly just take this class because Rich is a teddy bear.
This is the perfect class to fulfill a science gen ed! It's all useful stuff about the body. Lots of cool in-class demonstrations. Quizzes and tests online except for the final. There are usually a few test questions that only come from the class lectures so try to be there.
Super kind, really cares about his students. He has amazing stories and makes classes entertaining. He doesn't teach what you don't need to know, and is clear with what he will test on.
Rich has to be one of the best professors at the university. He has the most amazing stories to tell and is very good at breaking down difficult concepts. He cares about every student and wants them to succeed. If you have the chance tot are a class form him, do it! You wont regret it.
Rich is an amazing person, and I absolutely loved his lectures because they were entertaining and interesting. However, I didn't enjoy his style of teaching at all. He is very disorganized and goes on major tangents every 10 minutes. The tests were difficult because Rich doesn't write them. Its an easy A because everything is curved.
Really funny and kind guy, but he was pretty disorganized and seemed to burn out a bit at the end of the class. He talked a lot about medical applications for the physics concepts, which is probably great if you're a premed student. I'd recommend him, but only if you're able to learn from textbooks and not just lectures.
Rich is the man! Physics can be a very tough subject, but he cares about you as an individual and he wants you to pass. I don't think we failed anybody in either 2010/2020 this semester I took it. He works with you and your grade is based of how everyone is doing in the class, not a black and white cut off line for each grade. Take from him!
Rich is easily one of the best professors i've ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and their success. He is very considerate and knows that his class is not the only class you are taking. He keeps homework at a minimum and truly cares that you are learning and understanding concepts. Ten thumbs up for this guy.
Rich is an amazing guy. He loves what he does and loves his students. His class is ridiculously easy and he pretty much tries to give all his students an A. His lectures are funny and interesting and he brings in lots of guests. Rich is probably my favorite professor i've taken at the U and I would take his class again in a heartbeat.
Rich is one of my favorite professors. His class is extremely interesting. He does his best to make learning fun. Gives great lectures and tells stories, that are applicable to the course. Truly cares about his students. Rich is always happy to help and guide his students. Assignments/quizzes are fairly easy.
Rich, is a classy dude. He encouraged our class to send him a biography about ourselves. He did a great job of navigating this class as we were required to take it online. I have to say he's probably one of my favorite professors. He understands that you have other commitments but in the summer it does go double speed. His TA's were a huge asset.
Rich is a super cool guy!! I took this class as a general education credit and I would definitely take another class with him again. Super funny and laid back professor who genuinely cares about each and every student of his. We need more professors like Rich!
Just an amazing professor. Very well respected due to his easy going nature, kindness, and knowledge. I accidentally missed an online quiz and instead of giving me zero, he simply used my previous quiz score. Highly recommend taking a class with him at least once!
Rich had to be my favorite professor this year. He is very understanding of students, especially student athletes. He said that no one has gotten lower than a B in his class in the last 20 years! The lectures were always interesting, and this felt more like a sports med class rather than physics if anything.
Subjective: quizzes are based on what he says entirely and have nothing to do with the material that was intended for each particular quiz. Talks about himself all the time, so if you listen + take notes, the quizzes do not match. He draws the bones instead of showing anatomy, completely incompetent doctor. Do not be fooled by his self-promotion!
Rich attempts to get to know each and every one of his students, he's laid back and overall a good professor! Quizzes and Exams are super easy as long as you read the textbook!
I'm a freshman this year and I was worried about how I'd be able to handle classes. This professor is very understanding, caring, and is always encouraging students to come up to him after class to talk about anything you're struggling IN or OUTSIDE of class. His lectures are easy to follow, taking light notes and attending his fun demonstrations.
Literally the coolest guy ever. Always tries to be engaged with students. Most of the class is him going off the topic of the lecture and sharing his own experiences as a doctor/person in the wilderness, but it's actually very interesting and still educational. A good class to take if you love the outdoors, and want an easy A.
Rich is literally the coolest person alive. From his medical career, to his outdoor advocacy, to all the stories he tells in class you will want to be his best friend. Honestly he wants to be your best friend, too. He knows his stuff, he understands, he cares. Its an easy A and you learn so much. If you spend time outdoors, take this class.
The nicest guy ever, and he really cares about all of his students.
Rich is a really good person but his class was way harder than an introductory physics course should be. Class averages on tests were 50% usually. The homework covered stuff that we never talked about in class or what we looked over in class taken to the extreme. Also we never reviewed any material leading up to tests, covered new stuff day before.
He's super caring and wants you to learn physics instead of stressing about your grade. Personally, I didn't attend many lectures and found it more useful to self-study.
This class was tough but that might be because I am not a fan of physics. Rich made this class very enjoyable and fun! he did many in class demonstrations which made concepts easier to learn. He was very accommodating and offered lecture in person as well as over zoom. He is such a caring professor and always wants to get to know his students!
Rich does care about students but the class was tailored toward medical majors. Tests were retired MCAT questions, and the majority of the class got 50% on them. The lectures were wasted talking about random things and I essentially had to go to YouTube to understand concepts. He says everyone gets an A or B so it seems redundant to try hard.
Rich is a gifted storyteller and clearly passionate about what he teaches. However, TA's run the Canvas course and the quizzes rarely match up with the content in class. He avoided me when I would bring up my grade, but thanks to consistently confronting him throughout the semester he finally helped me. Great guy, I just wish the Canvas was better.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. Easiest class, super funny guy. You can tell he really cares about his students. 10/10 would recommend.
Dr. Ingebretsen is the definition of a good guy. That being said, it is the easiest class with the least application. Most information was common sense, and I felt weirdly guilty for waisting so much tuition money on the class. Fun experience if you're looking for an easy A with friends!
Take the class. Rich is amazing, and is one of the only professors that has offered to write me a letter of RECC. I have taken two classes from him, and both have been incredible. He's literally the bomb .com, I would highly recommend taking any of his classes.
He doesn't have a clear grading scheme and his lectures are all over the place. If you need an A you just hope. Hardest exams ever. He will tell you not to attend lecture at the beginning of class but you MUST in order to do well on the quizes. If you want an easy pass, take this class but if you want to learn something this isn't the way to go.
The only thing I did in this class was try to think of ways I could kill myself using the concepts being taught. much like the "ball rolling off the cliff", I wanted to fall off of something tall and reach Vmax before impact.
Rich was one of my favorite professors. Bro was comedy and his lectures were fantastic. One of my favorite classes to attend.
Lectures are pointless. The TA's teach all the information. Everyone gets a good grade, but your performance on exams is totally up to luck. They are MCAT questions, but it is totally randomized so some people get really easy exams and other people get stuff we never learned.
He's a nice guy, but that doesn't make up for him being a lousy professor. If you want to actually learn physics, do not take 2010 with him. He doesn't teach, and you're left scrambling to learn from the TAs during the discussion section. Exams were based off of old MCAT questions, but I certainly do not feel prepared for the MCAT.
He is really funny! I would defiently reccomend this class.
Rich is such a homie and one of the coolest people ever! He has many important responsibilities outside of this class, but he still cares a ton about this class and will do anything to help people succeed. I appreciated how he gave us the opportunity to learn in the way that works best for us, while also giving us lots of good resources.
An amazing professor! He is my favorite instructor so far at the University of Utah. Extremely knowledgeable incorporating a lot of fun demonstrations that you'll remember. The text is easy to read and engaging. Quizzes and quick assignments on each chapter. No final. One paper. Dr. Ingebretsen is the best!
Rich is a super nice guy, and his class is structured to reflect his desire for the success of his students. I took this over the summer, so it was fast-paced and hard to retain info. The exams are hard, but he grades on an MCAT grading scale where 50% is good. He doesn't teach super well. Had to rely on TAs and Khan Academy to save my grade.
Great teacher
DO NOT TAKE PHYSICS WITH RICH. He is incredibly unclear on what materials will be on the exams and states the last one isn't cumulative until four days before the exam is scheduled he says it is on previous material too. His exams are retired MCAT questions, but HELLO not everyone is going to med school. Never lectures about physics (only running)
Very easy, but a very disorganized/useless class. In terms of tests, they aren't' even that bad- an (A) cutoff is a 75% and you can easily score above 85% on all exams, even though he "claims" they are MCATquestions. Don't even bother showing up to lectures if you need to take this class- just read the textbook, go to discussions, you'll be set!
Incredible professor with so much experience. His lectures are fascinating and allows the students to be extremely engaged in wilderness medicine. There are 4 exams throughout the semester and one paper, that is literally all you have to do for this course. Would 100% take this class & this professor if you can!
Rich is such a nice guy, but it's hard to defend his lectures/tests/teaching style. So scatterbrained, off topic, learned a lot about wilderness medicine but it is a college physics class. Grading scale is easy but be prepared to relearn all of physics when taking the MCAT or other tests
Rich is such a kind and caring person, but his class drove me crazy. I woke up early to get to his 8am lecture, but then we never actually learned physics. He mostly taught about anatomy. I had to teach myself the entire class. There are absolutely NO assignments besides tests and quizzes. We also never knew the grading scale until after the final.
Rich is a super nice guy. He really talks to you like you are a real human being instead of a robot student. That said, his class drove me nuts. I never really knew what I was supposed to be learning. He curves heavily to account for this, so don't fear. You can score high fairly easily, but you won't master much physics for future endeavors.
Each day I went to class hoping to learn and left disappointed. He spent class time going on tangents and talking about his personal life, and he spoke insensitively about social issues. He wrote the textbook and it's very disjointed, but if you memorize what it says you can get his ambiguous test questions right for a good grade. Avoid his class.
Rich is great! I would recommend this course, especially if you are premed.
Rich is an incredible teacher. His lectures were funny and informative. The demonstrations were helpful and anything unclear could be found in the textbook. We had one paper but it was only one page long and we could use AI. The exams were easy if you had paid attention. Great class if you are looking for an easy and fun GedEd.
Richard was visually a very knowledgeable and passionate guy. He made every class a welcoming setting and he made sure to invest time in his students. He ensured I kept a good grade on sick leave for 3 weeks. He made an amazing and beneficial textbook/website for this class, that I found extremely helpful and interactive.
If you spend ANY time outdoors, especially in the mountains, you need to take this class. We learned so much about backcountry safety. With the amount of outdoorsy folks at the U, this class will save lives and Rich is one of the best professors I've ever had. He makes an effort to get to know you and his lectures/stories are always fascinating.
Would 1000000% recommend taking this class with Dr. Rich! Such a laid back professor with interesting lectures. Don't need to attend class, he has a zoom link for every class, just need to show up for exams. Exams are easy, he gives you practice tests and that's all you need to pass. One short paper that can be written on any topic you want.
I'm cheating a little bit. I'm still taking the class, but this is the first time I've taken from a professor at the U and felt strongly enough to write a positive review for a professor. Most of the time, I want to get on here and talk about how bad someone is. Rich is amazing. He's humble and funny. His lectures are great, in my opinion.
Amazing guy. Most of the reviews talking about a "disorganized" teaching style are likely students who did not attend lecture (it was not mandatory). But as someone who did show up, there was very minimal outside material i needed to use.
Reviews talking about his teaching style are likely students who didn't attend lecture. It was not mandatory, but as someone who went I relied very little on outside material
Rich was one of the best professors I've had. He made lectures very interesting to listen to and showed genuine care for students both in and out of class. Rich has a very clear passion for what he teaches that is infectious. If you're thinking about taking this course, do it!
Rich is a nice professor who will teach you physics and tell lots of stories. Lectures aren't mandatory, but discussions were with two graded quizzes (one individual and one group) twice per week. "Hard" exams since most don't attend lectures, but no problem if you pay attention and do practice quizzes. The course gets curved, so most get A grades.
Professor Rich is a good professor. He is patient and has a sense of humor. However, he can not deeply explain the physics concepts and formulas. And, the exam emphasizes the conceptualization of physics. So, if you need to take this course and get a good grades, you need to learn more after class. Finally, I grade scale is reasonable.
Few professors I have met who care a lot about their students like Rich. I felt like I rarely had to rely on outside material and learned a lot from his class. You just have to attend. Don't miss lecture, and don't miss the discussions and you will get an A.
rich has super fun and has entertaining lectures and was very kind and accommodating of any circumstances that may arise.
Rich is a nice professor, but he is here just to hear himself talk. He has never done a complete practice problem in class- only jokes and talks conceptually about physics. The exams are retired MCAT questions so they are hard, and Rich will NOT prepare you. You have to learn everything on your own or in discussion. But at least he curves!
Professor Rich makes this class super engaging. Lectures are captivating, no need to attend if you have the zoom link. Exams are a breeze with practice tests - unstuckstudy was a lifesaver too. Easy A, would 100% recommend this class!
He thinks he is funny but can't teach well. He should go into the stand-up comedy industry rather than school. His course involves tons of medical school content, extremely hard for international students to understand those terms, but the physics part is super easy, just middle school level.
Everyone should take intro to wilderness med. I learned so many interesting and valuable things about outdoor topics including water purification, injury treatment, proper clothing and footwear, so much more. Anyone who loves being outdoors should take this. He has great stories and is always so accomodating! Thank you Rich!!!!
Rich is a great guy. The lectures are 80 minutes long, and there is a small attendance quiz at the end of every class. Those things are wicked easy if you're awake and have a pulse. The exams are curved heavily. They're taking questions from retired MCATs and applying physics properties to them.
One of the best professors you could ever take, especially if you are pre-healthcare or fitness oriented and want to learn phycics through the lens of the human body
Dr. Ingebretsen is a really chill professor. He really wants ALL of his students to succeed, and gives around 3 attempts on each quiz and allows unlimited retakes on exams (provided that you reach out to the TA.) Honestly, a very informative and interesting class, even though I took it for the credits. He also hands out random extra credit!
this guy was amazing, genuinly my favorite professor. he made the daily quizzes pretty simple, but i had to understand a lot of the material on my own. the only thing was each exam (3 in total) were mcat questions, but you get a cheat sheet. there is also no final.
Rich is a very funny man who has great stories. He can get distracted and go off on tangents but, I found it helpful as it kept me engaged. He actually wants his students to succeed and get an A. Physics is a hard topic so its not gonna be easy but Rich makes it manageable.
Rich is such a good professor. He respects all his students as equals to him, and can recognize when it's time to take a short break from a long lecture. He will do everything in his power to help you understand the material, and the grading curve is very forgiving.
Best prof ever. To be completely honest, he doesn't really teach that much. Discussion is where you learn everything you need in the class, and the only reason to go to the lecture is to get the code for the lecture quiz and listen to his jokes. He has a textbook, but you don't have to read it; it can help with studying, however.
Rich was my favorite professor of this semester. He was so funny, caring, personable, and just knew a lot of what he taught. You can tell he really cares about this, and his patients. You should definitely take a class with him.
Super easy for physics. Sweet man. He is not a great lecturer and goes on side tangents a lot but go to discussion and you'll be fine. Attendance is mandatory because most days there are quizzes but they total to 2% of your grade. Class is curved heavy because exams are hard. No final which is nice.
Rich was amazing for physics. His lectures were engaging and funny, and he gave in class quizzes which were super simple and easy. Discussions were where most of the physics was learned, led by the TAs. Attend class class and discussion most of the time and you will end with an A. The exams are hard, but curved heavily. There was also no final exam
Rich seems like a nice guy. Often times his personability got in the way of his teaching, making his lectures pretty meaningless. Most of what I learned was from the discussion sections. The class was trivially easy, tho. I missed like 10 discussions and 4 assignments and still squeaked by with an A-. If you want an easy A, take physics with Rich.
Rich is a great guy, built the grading so there is a low chance you even fail with missing a few assignments. Class was built for a pre med student because all the questions were all retired mcat questions.
