Really easy quizes, with only two tests that arent bad at all. Labs arent too bad either, and he helps you out if you ever need it. Plus his grading scale is 85% and up for an A.
Very easy. The grading system is very lenient, like 84% and above is an A. You cannot go wrong with this guy!
He is so boring and doesn't teach the material necessary to pass. He has a strong accent which makes it hard to understand. He also singles out people to make them feel stupid.

Easy to get A's on labs. His grading scale makes it easy to get b's and a's. But it's going to take all you've got to stay awake in his class. But if you can fight through the monotonous english accent, it's all good.
He is a great teacher take him for chem.
Awesome teacher. Grading scale is awesome, and the lab grading system is very fair. Quiz every week but it's better than having more than 5 tests in a quarter. very interesting, but too in depth. overall, an awesome teacher!
Straight forward class. Very nice grading scale. Is helpful when asked for help, and the labs are pretty easy. Has got an awesome sense of humor that most people don't get. I highly recommend him.
He's got a great grading scale. He's straightforward about what must be understood and teaches the material well. He's fair and easy enough without being mind-numbing, plus he has an excellent sense of humor that only about three of us in my class understood.
Show up for class and labs. Study moderately for his quizzes and you wont be sorry. He is easy going but only if you work hard and prove it.
Good class. Grading scale is favorable and he is available for help when needed.
He doesn't know how to explain mathematical problems, which is most of the class, but other than that he is alright.
his grading scale is really good. he is ok when comes to teaching. almost every one gets an A for his lab. ok to take him.
this guy is nice. have an english accent which is hard to understand. his website is really helpful. gives you nice points on the labs. quizzes are a littel bit hard than the stuff in the textbook or in the lecture. his eaxams arent that bad eitherif you have trouble sleeping record his voice& play
DR. JARMAN IS ONE OF THE NICEST TEACHERS IN COD TRUST ME I KNOW I TOOK CLASS WITH HIM FOR TWO QUARTERS. EASY LABS, AND EASY QUIZZES,,, BUT HARD TESTS ONLY IF YOU DONT' STUDY THE THINGS TO DO AND THINGS TO KNOW LIST. ONE DRAWBACK IS THAT HE CAN'T REALLY GIVE A GOOD LECTURE. MAYBE ITS BECAUSE OF THE ACCENT AND THE TIMINGS OF THE CLASS MAKE U SLEEPY.
His english is the most disruptive part of the class. you try to listen, but he will make you believe you have A.D.D. Couldn't help but fall asleep in the class. Grading scale is Awesome. Quizzes are easy. Tests have nothing to do with the notes, so read the book and practice the math on your own. Do me a favor, don't take him!!!!
Jarman is an easy grade, but i'm retaking this class just because I learned nothing! He is very hard to understand. His notes have no relation to the tests, so if you are going to take him... make sure you READ the book. He grades labs easy, not strict at all. A quiz a day, and those are hard!
he is a very easy teacher!! his quizes are easy and the labs as well!! If you take his class go to sleep at 7;00pm otherwise you will fall asleep in his class!!!
He is wouderful teacher even though I couldn't understant what he talks about in the class. The weekly quiz depend on his notes. You can print his notes online. The exam you should review the detail in the notes, but the grade of exam does affect your final grade. He give you many papper to get credit. If you can undersdant note, you will get A.
Easy class, he is very clear in what he expects. There is a lot of busy work.Make sure you do your best on the labs since they make up the biggest part of your grade (they are very easy). There are a lot of quizzes. The tests are not that bad, besides 84 percent in his class in an A!Great Grading scale.Dont take this class if you are lazy! Easy A!
Even though the class is super boring, it's extremely easy! His gives EASY quizzes each week and the easy labs make up most of your grade. I would recommend him to anyone! It's chemistry people, it's going to be boring so you might as well have an instructor who's easy going!
he is handsome.Easy class.
I've rated him before, and I think he's fabulous. I also wanted to make sure that he gets his well-deserved chili pepper. (He really is a sexy man.)
His A starts at 84%, so it's possible to do well. Labs are about 50% of the grade - find the answers online & it will make up for lower quiz/test scores. Jarman's lectures are not good, but he will help you understand the material if you go to his office. You have to put up with a bit of a mean personality though, so I went to the tutors for help.
Easy class. Helpful insturctor - he is willing to help students during his office hours and during lab time. Test are harder than labs. Labs are an easy "A", but they take time to complete.
He tests from the book, so read the chapters and study his notes. Chemistry formulas are difficult, but Dr. Jarman will help you to understand them if you ask him. He is sometimes unclear in lectures, but surprisingly clear when asked questions in person. Find answers to labs questions on the internet to get full credit for lab reports.
He had the hottest accent!!! His assignments were easy, they were longer and took maybe and hour at the most to do b/c all of the information was so easy to find, good choice for teacher!
Dr. Jarman is a nice man. Labs are an easy "A", but take lots of time searching the internet for the answers. Getting an "A" on tests take a clear understanding of the material. Not the hardest class I ever took, but I did have to put in lots of time studying to get a good grade.
Great teacher...so nice and very willing to help out! He's SOO funny if you listen to him also. He makes the labs so much fun.
Damn,... He's the best teacher ever. His grading is based on labs mostly, 3 tests and quizes weekly, very helpful. He's accent is awesomeee... He's the best. i hate chemistry but from now i love it. Easy A.
VERY nice guy...willing to help you out. Good sense of humor-at times funny...the only difficulty really is his way of wording things-its very elaborated-which was the main reason why i didnt understand/comprehend alot. other than that-his grading is pretty easy. im not a huge chem fan-so i def had to work for my grade
Great teacher! Always willing to help you out just go to his office during his office hours. Funny as hell. His power-points are on his web site. BE SURE TO READ THE BOOK if you want an A.
he rules! take this teacher for a fun and thorough but not too difficult chem class.
this class was soo hard. the test were impossible, but at least the labs give you a little buffer so you don't fail. almost impossible to get an a. very nice guy, just a difficult subject, and he doesn't help much.
Overall a great instructor. Clear and to the point powerpoints (although sometimes boring and sleep inducing), plenty of practice problems to prepare for tests and helpful labs. Tests can be rather difficult. Great personality and sense of humoUr. Occasional outside of class activities required. Almost always in his office if help is needed.A+ Prof
Mr. Jarman it's not right to rate yourself only the English spell humor with an extra u. You are a good Prof and helpful. Powerpoints are great, web site helpful, not an easy class though. If you take him ,read the book it will help with quizes.
Although he doesn't really explain things in a way that I easily understand them, he creates thorough power points for every single lecture to help students and he is always willing to help you any time during his office hours. Cracks a few jokes here and there and tries to set the class up to ensure students for success as best as possible.
Awesome professor with a nice accent. You must read the chapters to pass the tests. Nothing in his notes or powerpoints is on the tests. They come directly from book. Labs are easy. Great professor overall.
Dr. Jarman is a cool teacher. He can make you laugh and he's very helpful. I love being in his class, especially every thursday (lab day). Good luck in everything.
i love this class. the semester just flew by. prof. jarman made everything so easy.
He is an excellent teacher.
He is the boss. Very easy teacher with a sweet accent. Take his class if you can
Dr.Jarman's amazing. He expects you to learn the lectures and apply the concepts, not just memorize. Exams are doable if you study. He gives his students opportunities to succeed. An exceptionally intelligent prof. He's funny and rather captivating.People-this is college! Lectures happen, exams happen. If you want to learn chemistry Jarman's your guy.
This man is one crazy nut. he expects u to dedicate ur life to chemistry. do not be fooled by these other ratings-u will die strugling in his class. this man does not know how to teach and he is so lame! it's impossible not to fall asleep in his class.do urself a favor and do NOT take him.
If you read the book, pay attention and actually put some effort into exams and labs you will get a good grade. jarman has the most relaxed grading scale ive ever seen.he wants everyone to walk out of there with knowledge on the subject. If you find him to be a nut, you probably don't have the capacity to understand his sense of humor.
Man he was so hard and annoying! i mean go back to the Britsh where everything has to be proper, he needs a life, him and his proper ways of writing things? He could be a little more relaxed buthe is a prick. Worst teacher never take him!!!!!!!
why r u even looking at this teacher. do NOT even bother to take this instructor. he does not know how to teach and is such a tough grader. his tests are impossible. he does not teach u a single thing and thinks he's so funny when he's not. he sickens me. this man needs to get this through his head that we are not doing our major in chemistry.
this man is impossible. through his thick accent, u will not understand anything. either way, it does not make a difference b/c he does not explain anything. Clearly, this man does not like his job.
He rates himself guys!!! don;t belive in the ratings!!he is the worst teacher in the world. he is not clear and his tests make no sense. Are we dong a a class or a PHD???????please save ur self the trouble and don't TAKE HIS CLASSS@!!!!
If you thought Prof. Jarman was a bad teacher then you are clearly stoned.
If you are in his 1551 or 1552 class then expect it to be hard cause it is the class designed for sci/chem majors. He knows his stuff. He uses powerpoints alot but they are good ones. You have to do alot of work on your own but it IS college level. He keeps good office hours and indeed is helpful. His accent is NOT difficult. He has a quirky hurmor
Weekly quizzes keep you honest about what you do and don't know. Sometimes the exams can come from a different angle than you might expect from the lectures. Make sure you understand the material in both texts and lectures well. If you're doing the work, Dr. Jarman is very accessible and supportive.
awesome teacher. gives a lot of extra credit through the iclickers. the tests are hard but if you study enough youll do fine. people that say he is a bad teacher are the probably the type of kids who are really lazy and/or just dumb. its easy to do well in this class if you make the effort.
AWFUL! The guy loves chemistry but really is not a good teacher of chemistry. I dislike his haughty attitude. I suppose he thinks he is funny. He just reads from the ppts. Take Mary Newberg for a great learning experience! I wish I did.
I personally think that Professor Jarman is a terrible teacher. He only read off of the powerpoint and only had one way of explaining things. It is possible to get a good grade in the class, but you pretty much have to teach yourself or get help from other students. Take the class w/ a diff. teacher....you might actually learn something then.
Does NOT read from ppts, that would require the 2 hr lecture to be written on ppts, and it's not the case. Yes,course is hard, but every opportunity is given for success. It's the students choice whether or not the opportunities to succeed are utilized.Students given access to study material on homepage. This is college, not H.S.
Very awesome. Someone already said this on here, but he makes it hard for you to not get at least a B. 88% is an A and he gives out lots of extra credit points. Has the lecture powerpoint online and only 4 exams (and final is NOT cumulative).
Dr Jarman, is by far the most helpful teacher I have ever had. He is always willing to help out, either in person or by e-mail. Do the practice problems that are in his website for better understanding. I recommand that you read the chapter before you go to class. If you seek the extra help and use the sources u will get a good grade.
i took chem 1105 w/ him and he iz VERY VERY EZ On those who r taking chem 1105 ull notice this if u read the rest of the ratings..he was nice..n gave us an oppurtunity of 120 extra credit points
Great teacher and the accent made it all the more fun! This was probably one of my most favorite classes I've ever had. Kudos to Professor Jarman! We'll miss you! I might come back and take Chemistry again just for the heck of it. =)
He was a pretty amusing/entertaining teacher with a good sense of humor - always joking around. he was lenient as well, and has a relaxed grading system since his A starts at 84. this was one of the most fun classes i ever took n hes cool. however ppl who actually want to learn should probably not take this class since you'll have to teach urself.
Prof. Jarman is a really nice guy. He becomes less strict as the weeks go by.His tests can be difficult, but there are chances for extra credit. He tends to become easily frustrated and you must read the text to do well on the tests.Labs are tedious. He is easy to get a hold of and is always in his office. He does care about his students.A good class
He really knew his stuff.
He can be funny, but he just expects you to understand what he's saying and he runs through the material so quickly it's very hard to keep up with him, He also isn't big on questions, he get frustrated when you try to ask him something.
He's ok
He's a nice guy and he's always easy to reach in his office. However, his teaching isn't all that great and he rushes through the material like it's all just review. You have to teach yourself the material. if you are willing to put in the time and effort you will be fine in his class.
He's nice, odd, but funny. This class is the same everyday though. Sit and listen to very very long power points that seem like they'll never end. There's just so much information it's hard to tell what you need to know. Thus, tests are pretty hard. No study guides, no tips on what to review, or what you even need to know.
I took 1105, if I had to take 1211 or 1551, I would take Dr. Jarman again. He's easy going, extremely intelligent, funny. Get the iClicker and attend class, those are Extra Points and can raise your grade. Do your work and you'll be fine.
His lectures are quite interesting if you are already familiar with the material.
I hate science and this guy made it painless. Attendance wasnt mandatory but if you are not there you will learn nothig. If you complete every lab and other assignments, combined with good attendance and effort, his class should not be that difficult.
NOT one of the best teachers for Chemistry! Would NOT suggest him to any other student. Why? Lacks teaching skills, enthusiasm, and clarity! He'll give you a decent grade, but will leave you disappointed and confused overall. He has hard tests! YOU DONT LEARN FROM HIM! IF YOU TAKE HIM, THEN LEARN CHEMISTRY ON YOUR OWN!
I thought he was an amazing teacher!!! True some people don't get his Brit-Wit but i really enjoyed his class! He gave a ridic amount of extra credit and for those people that didn't study i can see why you needed. True its not easy material, but he literally goes over everything and all the problems that show up on the exams. Take it with Him!
Take it with Him!
Dr. Jarman is great. He is hard to get used to, and honestly he is the equivalent of Professor Snape of Harry Potter. But once you get past his gruff introduction he has a wonderful sense of humor and truly enjoys teaching. Don't be afraid! He's awesome! My favorite professor at COD EVER.
His class isn't easy. But he's VERY reasonable on his grading. You need to do a lot of preparation outside of class to understand his lectures, but he is always available to answer questions. Also, the man is simply hilarious. I absolutely recommend taking his class!
I took honors. He is a REALLY good teacher and explains things well, though quickly. does tons of practice problems throughout classes, and hands out problems to do in-between classes, which really helps for tests and quizes. Tests can be hard, but study and you'll do fine. He is excellent at answering questions. Knows his english composition.
Jarman was soo hard to hear! He talked extremely quiet and he has an accent that's hard to understand at times. He is a super nice guy and a great chemistry teacher but his lectures are uninteresting. The labs are fun and easy. Overall he is ok.
If you get British humor, he's quite funny. Labs were always fun and rather easy. Lectures could be long, but with the clicker points, it's more than worth it to go even though it's not mandatory. If you took Chem at all in H.S. and understood it at all, this class will be a breeze!!
Science is one of my worst subjects and I failed most of the tests/quizzes but passed with a B b/c I did all the labs well. He's a really nice guy too and I didn't have a problem with the accent either. I say a good teacher if you pay attention(or do what I did and just do well with the labs)
Pay attention in lecture. labs were pretty easy. He's pretty cool and a fair grader. Just listen to his lectures and print out the lecture notes, they help. He puts up practice quizzes/tests that help. and the thing that passed me was the TON OF EXTRA CREDIT HE GAVE!! MAKE SURE TO GET/RENT AN ICLICKER, EACH QUESTION YOU GET RIGHT IS A POINT :)
i am NOT good at chemistry, or a good test taker, but his grading system and points make it easy to do well, even if you don't do great on a test. and who doesn't love a british accent? he was awesome. i'm TERRIBLE in chemistry, and i got an A in the class. he's a GREAT prof!
Jarman was super easy. Only checks to see if you've written anything on the pre-labs. Bring your clicker to class for extra-credit points; I skipped the final and still had over 100%. He does have a British accent and his humor is very dry, but if that's your cup of tea, he's quite funny.
His tests are difficult but IMO very fair. Provides lots of in-class/take-home handouts which help tremendously for his tests. He teaches the material so you understand it fundamentally and not just for temp memorization. Comes off a bit rough at first, but in actuality he is extremely friendly, helpful, and encouraging. Favorite professor yet.
I ENJOYED MR. JARMAN HE IS REALLY UNDERSTANDING AND NICE. HE HELPS YOU AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
Easiest class ever, I liked his unusual teachings, I wasn't the greatest chem-head, but he went to the BASICS, very easy to understand chem., Iclicker=Xtra Cred Pts, write out purp/proced for labs, mandatory lab attndce (if ur late lockd doors wont get in)will have small prjts, tests are OK...ovrall take his class, it's worth it, u won't regret it!
Chemistry is my favorite subject now just because of him! he really cares about his students. Best Chemistry teacher you can ever have!
Great professor ! Easy A take him.. You will actually learn something too.
Attendance is only mandatory during labs, but if you show up every day, you can get enough iClicker extra credit to skip an assignment or two. Power-point based lectures are a bit boring, unless you get his dry sense of humor. The material is quite easy and you don't really use the regular textbook, but you'll definitely need to buy the lab one.
Trust me guys don't take him it's coming from a guy who loves chemistry he never explain any thing and when you ask him a question. he ask you to think.....
I loved this class and professor.. He was great a very helpful
Dr. Jarman is a great professor. If you regularly attend class and pay attention, your grade will reflect it!
Not too bad. He's pretty funny in a dry, British way, gives you a lot of freedom in lab. I found him to be pretty helpful when I had questions. Don't come to class late or unprepared, he will call you out. Spend the time on his lab reports and they are an easy 100%.
I only had him for the lab section of chemistry. His labs aren't too bad. If you at least put some type of effort in you can squeeze out a B in the labs. He's not very approachable because he looks like a scary Weird Al Yankovic, but he does have a sense of humor. Just average.
Great professor!!!!!!
Easy class. There's about 100+ extra credit points if you show up to class. Labs are very easy as he walks through step-by-step right before the class. He's very helpful and explains everything. Gotta love his accent too :p
I can't say enough good things about Professor Jarman! He is an excellent teacher. SOOO much opportunity for extra credit everyday (up to 100). Class attendance isn't mandatory but labs are. Don't buy the textbook though you won't need it. He taught chem in a way that made me love it, and I used to hate chemistry. If you need chem, take Jarman!
Cool teacher that offers tons of extra credit. Test are not the easiest but if you show up, you will do fine. Save your money on the book and buy a clicker
I LOVE THIS MAN! take him take him take him!!!!!
AMAZING PROF!!! LOVE HIS ACCENT!!!! WHOEVER SAID HE LOOKS LIEK WEIRD AL NEEDS SOME NEW GLASSES
Fun personality, but you should really have a clue about chemistry before you take this class or you will be pretty confused. If you are able to read through the book (which can add up to a lot if you have a job or other classes) then you will be able to understand better. Get an iclicker for the extra credit points
For a class with no math prereq's there is a boatload of algebra and Prof. J does not really do a great job of teaching it or distinguishing when to apply it. Tests and quizzes late in the course are uncommonly hard one test the mean score was 29/50. However he does give extra credit via iClicker and labs are easy & worth more so it's an easy B.
He's very helpful and explains things well. Show up, take notes on lecture days with your laptop or tablet, and take advantage of iTunes U and clicker points. He's amazing
Really easy to get a good grade in. He is kind of funny and his accent is sexy. ;) His lectures are super boring and I didn't pay attention at all and I still got a good grade. He gives a ton of extra credit! The labs are super easy and worth a lot of your grade percentage so if you do not do well on the tests you can make it up here.
BEST GUY EVER! TAKE HIM AND YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!
Prof. Jarman is a brilliant man who has high expectations out of his students, can be intimidating at first, and has regular/frequent office hours (good). This class had no specified text (good IMHO), ALEKS was used a lot (good, however annoying at times), 2 quizzes, 4 fairly hard exams plus the ACS, 13 labs, and a lot of extra credit!
This guy, Professor Jarman, oh boy. This guy is awesome. Extremely intimidating during the first few classes, but afterwards you'll notice that he's pretty laid back. The class was easy, just listen, take notes, and actually read the book (optional - I suggest Tro) then you should get a good 90% if not higher. Loved this guy, very nice, and funny!
I had to learn from the book. He's great for those who can understand theory very well, tests are very abstract. he assigns ws's and the answers to study from but doesn't provide work. Generally assumes you understand him, if you don't you need to speak up after class. During class he will answer Q's about problem at hand but may be condescending.
Very hard class so be prepared to spend a lot of time studying and writing lab reports as well as completing online homework. He can be intimidating but he truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed, however he can be confusing at times during lecture but that's when you should ask questions! He hates when you don't ask for help.
A lot of math involved in this class. But Jarman takes you through it carefully and clearly. Hard to get a bad grade with so much extra credit in-class. Don't mess with Jarman's rules for lab or class, he will kick you out of class and not care. Respect the man, show up for every single class and you will pass.
Mr. Jarman is a good teacher but you really need to study extra hard for tests. There is a quiz once a week, every week. Only 3 or 4 tests but they are all short answer and some matching. Gives lots of extra credit by asking clicker questions. But he doesn't give enough time to answer the question. You end up guessing half the time.
Please do not take his class. He is not a good teacher. He has written his own chemistry book which is useless. I made great use of the tutors offered by the college which was my saving grace. Made efforts to ask questions only to be left even more confused to begin with. He MAY only do one example in class and the work is nothing like the example
If you show up to class and study a decent amount you will get a good grade. Their is about 700 point total in this class and I got 80 points extra credit by answering "clicker questions" during lectures. Dr. J also makes lab reports and doing them as easy as he can, you just have to put in a little work. Overall great semester and recommend.
Great professor! Hon chem is hard! You will work hard and learn a lot. Labs were fairly easy. Tests are hard. Great class!
Great guy who cracks a joke occassionally must work hard to earn your grade. Study and ask him questions if confused, it will help for the tough tests.. he is an easy grader though. As long as you attend class, do the online homework, and do the lab reports (usually not hard), you will do fine. Also cares about his students. Must apply yourself
Don't feel bad if you are lost during lecture. Jarman is so smart that sometimes he over-complicates things, but as long as you review that power points on your own time and do online homework, As and Bs are easily attained. Overall he is a really nice guy who cares about his students and enjoys when his students are interested. Awesome accent
Great Teacher. Study to earn your A. Hard exams but well graded. Do your homework, do lab reports, and study his lecture before going to class.
Gotta admit, I really didn't like Jarman at all. Sure he gives a ton of extra credit on tests and such, but his lectures are useless. Learned more from just reading text than attending lecture. Tough lab grader. Tests not too bad with extra credit. Very patronizing when it comes to asking questions or seeking help.
Dr. Jarman is clever, kind, and professional. If you want to gain understanding of chemistry, take his courses. The honors sections are as much difficult as they are rewarding. He makes a huge effort into making the College of DuPage and the chemistry department a better place year after year. Personally, I wouldn't be where I am today without him.
I took his Honors Chem class back in 2013. Jarman was and is quite a character. He is a memorable person that your peers will continue to talk about years later. As always, to get an A, I worked hard for it. It was not easy. Prepare to study on your own because Chemistry is a definitely a difficult course. Biggest gripe ALEKS online hw. Terrible
Well, where should I start with this teacher? Well, first off, he hardly gives us any initiative on what exactly will be on the test. This teacher is funny, but in regards to problems, he does not go through step by step on how to do it. I'll be lucky if I pass this class! TERRIBLE TEACHER. DO NOT TAKE.
Jarman could be a brilliant chemist, but he is not a good teacher. Over complicates things. For class, we had online homework that taught more than he did. Lab reports need to be fluffed up with BS to get 100% but it is easy to get around 90%. Tests have extra credit questions that are easier than the normal questions.
Lectures are vague and long and include things you don't need to know for tests. Kind of rude if you don't understand things. Group project for honors, very stupid. Overall, not great. You're screwed if you're a bad test taker.
If you're passionate about chemistry, take Dr. Jarman's class. He's kind, witty, and understanding. Any problems you have, he'll make sure you can get the most out of his class and perform at your best. Look over the PowerPoint notes the day before if you like extra credit. Fascinating lectures. By far the best teacher I've ever had.
Below average. Take someone else if you want to have a good foundation of chemistry. Gives absolutely no indication of what will be on exams. Online homework taught me more than he ever did. I was able to get a B in honors but it would have been a C in non honors, this is only because I did all of the homework and did well on all of that labs.
Go to the lectures, and use the clicker for extra credit. Without the clicker extra credit I would have never gotten an A. Quizzes every week, and he drops the lowest lab grade.
Amazing prof! He is the type who makes you feel afraid to fail, not because you'll get a bad grade, but because he'll be disappointed in you. Earns your respect. SUPER clear lectures; ALEKS easy and broken into easily digested chunks. Only gripe is the honors project: stupid but relatively easy. All told, would HIGHLY recommend!
Honestly, worst class I have taken at COD. No one in lecture asks any questions, mostly because everyone is so lost that we don't know what to ask. The few times people have asked questions, he gets aggravated and makes us feel stupid. No indication as to what will be on exams/ quizzes. He writes problems on board and doesn't explain. HORRIBLE.
He's kind of funny, I guess. Used to be an actor and preaches about "helping students not be anxious about chem" I guess he is good at acting. I haven't been this nervous and lost in a class in a long time, all in all I would not take him. Passing this class was great but those 16 weeks were hell.
WOULD NOT TAKE! Take this as a sign.
Not really available outside of class. Always busy. Lectures are long and boring and there is a lot of self teaching. Offers extra credit and is a fair grader but I would not take him if this is your first time taking chem.
Chem is difficult subject but doable if you're ready to dedicate a substantial amount of time to studying. Personally, his lectures were a snoozefest because he didn't capture my attention, and because of this I had to teach myself a lot and watch a ton of youtube tutorials. He gets mad easily but is a fair grader. He also offers a lot of E.C.
Professor Jarman is a very nice person. I think for a teacher to explain the ABC's of a topic and going into details in such little time isn't easy. They have limited time to cover the chapters. He offers a lot of extra credit and is a pretty fair grader. I read his entire book and learnt a lot from it. It is very well written. Thanks Dr. Jarman!
Tests are very fair. Labs have a clear grading criteria. Class attendance isn't mandatory but is recommended. Lectures were very British.
If you are passionate about chem and already have a good amount of chem knowledge you will enjoy this class and the challenge it brings. However, if you are like me and need more guidance in chem this is not the professor you want. No indication of what will be on tests and he can come off like he expects us to know the material already.
You're guaranteed an A if you use the iclicker, go to class and put in the time outside of class. Tests are your avg chem questions. Practice the example problems he has in his textbook & watch a lot of youtube tutorials.
He is a pretty nice guy, though lectures can be pretty long and boring. Labs are mandatory, but you can skip one. Long lab reports are due every week, but they are pretty easy to get an A on. If you keep on top of ALEKS(online HW website) and the labs, you should be fine. All his lecture Powerpoints are posted on blackboard for review.
This class is challenging, but it's not impossible for a non-science major to pass. The textbook is NEVER used and you learn most material through ALEKS. All lessons are always on Blackboard if you miss a day. Clicker and the extra test questions give a LOT of extra credit. The lectures are very long and impersonal, but he's a pretty cool guy.
he gives a lotttttt of extra credit and I mean 100+ of extra credit. didnt really care for chem so the tests were hard but he's a fair grader. he drops the lowest lab grade
He's an awesome teacher. Being that he has a PhD earned at Oxford, he knows his stuff! The lectures were interesting (if you like chemistry), labs were fun, and gave out over 100 points of extra credit. Be careful, though, as the exams can be pretty difficult (even for someone who is at the top of the class), especially the ACS exam.
Fair teacher, if you go to class and try your best on the cliker questions then you have 100pts xtra credit already which help a lot at the end. Quizes are easy if you review the cliker questions. Tests are not multiple choice like weekly quizes. As long as you got to class and do the homework no reason to not pass with a B at least.
He's knowledgable, practical, organized, & a very fair grader. The lectures are hard to learn from, especially if you don't already know something about the lecture topic. I learned much better by reading the optional textbook. He leaves a lot to be taught by ALEKS, which I disliked. Be conscientious, & you'll be fine. Uses tons of subtle humor ;)
Professor Jarman was a blast to have. He's not your average Joe when it comes to teachers and really cares that you succeed in the class. If you are struggling you can ALWAYS count on him to leave you with help and positive feedback. I received and A in his class because I studied and did the homework. He's a character! Also get to know him!
Prof. Jarman is a very niuce professor. Gives a lot of extra credit and his quizzes are not very hard. His lectures are a little monotonous but if you try to follow you can definitely do it.
A lot of extra credit
He is an amazing professor. A lot of extra credit. Lectures are so interesting and helpful for the tests. He makes the chemistry easy and fun. Highly recommend
The only reason I got an A in this class was because there is extra credit every lecture day. Professor Jarman doesn't really teach but just reads off a slideshow, he's an okay guy but not the best at teaching. Attendance isn't in your grade, but you miss a lot of material if you miss and you miss all the EC
Professor Jarman is a very nice man but I feel like him as a chemistry professor is not that great meaning he reads off of all of the presentation slides & doesn't explain to you why he does what he does when he's working on some chemistry equation. The only good thing I really got out of the class was the extra credit that helped me pass with a C.
Dr Jarman is a nice and fair professor but could improve his lectures. He reads directly from his slides & doesnt provide much explanation when completing problems. As a Chem newbie a lot was self learning but he provides plenty of practice problems. Gave no indication of what would be on exams. Study guides would be helpful. Lots of EC opps.
Professor Jarman's course is very straightforward. His lectures can be confusing but he gives you all the tools possible to be successful in his class, as well as giving out easy exams. The lectures & slides themselves will not get you an A but doing the Aleks and taking notes on the topics will. He is an easy grader & a very reasonable professor.
Not clear on his lectures, likes to bounce around on topics. He does provide extra worksheets to prepare for tests which are helpful. Online course so your labs are online and he wants you to figure out the lab yourself, doesn't help when you have a question. Hard to focus during lecture, isn't excited to teach, reads off slides. Don't recommend.
He sucks. Super hard at grading and sucks at explaining. If you want to cry every night I recommend taking him.
Terrible professor. Gives lots of homework and due to the online format our labs are online. He doesnt give much explanation on how to do them either. During class he reads off through slides and says well come back to it later but never does. Its a teach yourself type of class. The tests are very difficult and arent like the practice problems.
Not a good professor. He only reads from the lecture slides during class. Gives lots of homework. Doesnt specify on how to do the labs. Gives 3-4 labs per week if its online. Has practice problems that are nothing like whats on the tests. The tests are very hard and you only have 2 hours. Online format makes it worse.
I took him because of the reviews of extra credit. Only gave one extra credit this semester. Homework takes hours. Online labs take hours because he doesnt tell you what to do. Hard to follow his lectures.
His classes are lectures and sometimes practice problems that are nothing like whats on the test. Tests are very hard. Not taking him again. Gives lots of homework and three or four labs a week.
Im not sure if Jarman has changed the way he teaches since past reviews that are positive but I would say they are all almost completely wrong. He gives lots of homework (online & in person) and is not really willing to listen to anything you have to say. Hes pretty condescending and makes you feel stupid if you ask questions or dont know something
Prof. Jarman has really grinded my gears this sem. He is so monotone in lecture, it is basically insufferable. And during labs, he is so condescending and makes everyone feel stupid. The only good thing about him is that his grading is considerably lenient.
Prof. Jarmans class is very difficult. In order to understand the material well enough to do well on the exams, you have to attend each lecture session and pay attention which is hard as he reads off the lecture slides. There is so much homework due each week and this class takes so much time. Only take honors if you are already good at chemistry.
It is so hard to focus in Prof. Jarman's class with his monotone voice. Moreover, he gives a lot of homework. During the labs, he is even more condescending in person and makes you feel like an idiot when you ask a simple question. However, he is an easy grader on the 2 tests during the sem. and he gives a lot of resources to study from.
Prof. Jarman is great! He gives many assignments and a couple of labs each week but they all help you understand the material more(especially NET class). He is also understanding and lenient in grading. You need to work hard for it, but he is accessible outside class and replies fast to emails. If you like chem don't worry much about the bad review
He is not very helpful or understanding and gives too much hw and not enough time to complete it. His tests are also 10x harder than the in class problems and he can make you feel extremely dumb when you ask a question. i would not recommend taking him
Only two exams: the midterm and final. The final is not cumalitive though. Labs are rough and lab reports are worse. He's a hard grader on lab reports. Monotone lectures too. Also, he has very BAD HANDWRITING.
A lot of homework is given out each week and on top of that there was a lab report (5-10 pages) due for each lab. To understand the material, you need to pay attention really well in class and dedicate way too much time outside of class to understand and retain information. There were two exams worth 25% and the practice problems didnt help much.
I cannot stand this professor and its week 3. He is so monotone with no life in his voice. An overwhleming amount of homework each week. His homework program of choice is ALEKS and its a freaking nightmare. Everytime you get a problem wrong it wipes your progress. He was the only professor I could take to fit my busy schedule. Avoid if possible. :(
Look. He's not the worst. I enjoyed him as a professor. But sadly, the way he teaches really screws me over, I don't learn material in a snap so I usually have to learn things myself to get the hang of it. Assigns alot of ALEKS but to think of it now he was a managble professor.
