Extremely enthusiastic and very fun. You'll work, but you'll learn and enjoy!
Very fun teacher, very intelligent. You learn a lot- great class!
very fun and enthusiastic. so many ideas, so short a semester. lots of work
Very dynamic teacher. Can be intimidating at times.
Very intimidating; hates underclassmen!
Highly opinionated...your opinion doesn't matter unless it corresponds with his.
Entertaining and fun. Overall, he can be particular, but you will learn a lot.
Fun, entertaining, interesting, challenging, exciting. Something new everyday!
This man has no place in the classroom.Very unclear and weird!Unfair! Fire him
Literally it seems to me that he's exciting
Friendly, very intelligent, expects students to do their best- you'll thank him
Intimidating - knows stuff, talks too fast and presents too much info. Not open
He is a GREAT Prof..really makes you think, makes college worthwhile.
He's crazy in a good way, still knows my name 4 years
so amusing to talk to and watch, a little off-the-wall sometimes but pretty easy
EXCELLENT prof, intimidatingly intelligent, makes you think!
Intimidating, Funny, Opinionated, Mockable. Literally it seems to me he's great!
Opinionated but has earned the right to be so, interesting stories and ideas
I have never thought so much! Very stimulating, AWESOME class!!!
Only prof whos class i didn't skip by choice. Makes you think, very knowledgable
very opinionated but raises interesting issues, class definitely opened my mind
crazy fun man intelligent lots of reading

intimidating in a way that forces you to speak up, very interesting
A little confusing, but finger pointing is classic
never followed syllabus, arrogant, unorganized, thinks he's funny

Worst prof ever. Arrogant and closed minded, has his "pets."

Interesting lectures, difficult to settle on specific points
intimidating, but on purpose, great discussion, stereotypical college prof.
Unclear expectations & arrogant. Avoid the class at all costs!
frightening man! assignments are always unclear, he's very full of himself
very unclear of student progress but is reasonable
Not sympathetic to those who work AND go to college - choose one, not both
funny, but pretty tough.
cool guy, very funny and thought-provoking, sometimes will make you mad.
Hey, I guess I am a wimp and an idiot then!

very amusing and interesting, loves what he teaches
Brilliant thinker, but confusing as hell.
Great prof. Makes class fun and not afraid to say something contraverial or funny. Class is easier than he makes it out to be.
Great energy and enthusiasm. Work hard and you'll get a good grade. Your effort is what he looks for the most. Read, think of questions, and be involved. Stay with him when he starts talking and you'll see how funny and intelligent he is.
He knows what he's talking about, but doesn't care to explain it to his students. He basically just likes to listen to himself talk, but it is an easy A.
Prof. Joanisse was the most influential person in my intellectual development. He inspires you to really think for yourself and to question and understand the world in a way that many people remain ignorant about.
Manic-depressive style of teaching; will seem very aloof and abrasive, then suddenly turn sympathetic...but it's all in good fun. I loved the class. Has the wonderful ability to accept being made fun of.
I had a great time in this class! He is really energetic and loves his students. Ask questions b/c he loves that and remember to keep an open mind! I would recommend him!
ONe of my fav. profs at GVSU. He's confusing and scatterbrained but you learn a lot from him. You can tell he loves his job so thats fun. My class only had one (take home) test, otherwise journals and papers. It was easy if you try a little bit.
Horrible! Take this class if you only want to hear him talk endlessly, he doesn't care to let the class discuss and show what they know. It's the Joanisse show and he's in control. He bores you to death if you know anything about the topic he is teachin
A somewhat nice guy, but doesn't seem like he is a good professor for SOC. To be honest, he sucks at delegating class discussions and doesn't allow much leeway whatsoever in his class. Still, if you like a lot of doctorate level language, take him.
He can be confusing many times througout the semester on what he wants done. He gave WWWWAAAYYY to many hand outs. His expectations for the class were unrealistic. I took him in the summer.Played favs in class. One good thing only 1 take home exam
Intimidating at first, but really more bark than bite. You do some tough topics in his class, but if you think clearly and work hard, you'll do well. Don't treat it like a regular test and lecture class.
He is a great prof to have for sociology! If you can keep up with the readings and understand them, and are willing to talk somewhat in class, he'll be thrilled with you. He's always willing to help after hours or walking to his next class.
I absolutely loved this class, and the way that he taught it. I could never fall asleep in class because of the interesting discussions. I would highly suggest anyone to take a sociology class under Joanisse. He'll get off topic, but it'll be worth it.
Joanisse is one CRAZY guy! He likes to talk (even though he says he's going to censor himself, he rarely does), but what he has to say is generally worthwhile to listen to. The reading is rough, but just come prepared to talk about anything and everything. Take this class!
He's my favorite prof ever-lots of fun and makes class interesting with stories and his personality. Lots of reading and journals, need to keep up with them or they'll come back to haunt you.
GREAT PROF! The ammount if reading is scary at first, but the articles are interesting, which makes it easy reading. He is a lot of fun, and great to discuss issues with.
Tends to ramble on and on. If you're looking for a discussion-based class, it isn't here. HE does all the talking. Likes to pick on people, so if you don't take critisism well, caution. Ok overall, just hard to get used to.
Very intelligent prof. He has very interesting ideas to share. Only problem is, he does all the sharing. Doesn't care about your thoughts or opinions at all. Most classes are just him talking straight through.
Very knowledgeable about Sociology. However, likes to talk on and on and on. It will be a miracle if you get two words in. Nice guy but likes to pick on people (in good fun, not maliciously). If you are sensitive though, beware! Good prof, in general, if you can live with what's said above.
Joanisse rules, if you don't think so you are wrong. Just ask him.
This professor is awful!!! He not only talks too much he is very unclear and is completely boring!
Worst professor ever. He took an interesting topic and turned it into the hugest waste of a class I have ever taken. He rambles on about nonsense and makes, tries to get class discussion going but fails miserably. I would have rather been taught by his TA.
He grades you based on your opinion of things and he rambles. He is very unclear about expectations and he lies about assignments. There are few opportunities for points so you are screwed if you don't do well on "journals." He is vague about what journals should entail.
He seems like a nice man that actually is very intelligent, but he would rather just ramble about NOTHING for the entire class period. You can't get a word in because he would rather hear himself talk. Your grade is based on a couple tests and POINTLESS journals. I would never take him again!
I thought that I was going to love this class, but I was wrong. There is a lot of reading! Most of the readings were interesting but a little difficult. He is very unclear and really doesn't explain what he wants at all. He also rarely gives out A's.
I raised my hand twice in a 30 minute period and he said "Are you going to be one of those kinds of students." Nice way to make discussions comfortable. Very uncomfortable atmosphere. He only wants to hear himself talk, and sometimes it was for the entire 3 hour class period. I walked out and dropped him. Save yourself the trouble and don't takehim
OBSCENE amount of reading and writing. Unclear on expectations. I took this class in the summer so it was probably harder than normal to complete everything, but yeah...DON'T take this class in the summer with him. Other than that, the class was interesting. He takes attendance and marks you down if you miss more than 2 days, so go to class.
He is very funny and knows his stuff. He can come off little narcissistic, but I learned a lot from the class. Take this class if you are interested working with adolescent children in a junior high high school setting. Make sure you read your articles and dont fall back on your journals and you will do just fine.
Yes he does talk alot but only because hes really interested in what he teaches. Hes like a kid on christmas and that compells me in class. And he would step aside if others actually talked sometimes. The journals were work but interesting and I wish more professors taught like he does Great Prof he knows alot and is helpful just but in if you need
He is unclear about what he wants and when you ask questions he rambles on and doesn't give you a clear, straight answer; he made me feel stupid for asking. He never seems to be at his office hours-at least not in the 6 times I tried to see him. He is extremely knowledgeable and can be entertaining but not the best for clarity.
Has a passion for what he does and it makes his class great, very knowledgable, awesome professor, entertaining. Clarity is only a problem when he gets really excited about what hes teaching and then he just goes a little too fast/far to follow but even then he will simplify it when hes done with the thought.
Just keep up in discussion and journals and you'll be fine. He's pretty easy and low stress. The only difficulty is that instead of letting students have their own discussions, he does all the talking and goes off on tangents. I didn't learn very much at all from him.
This guy is psycho! He makes you read a ton. Then he goes off talking when you get to class, and doesn't let you have a word in. When he gets done he gets REALLY mad at the whole class because he thinks nobody did the reading since there was no discussion. His tangents are just babble. Our class agreed that nobody understands him. He just can'
Prof Joanisse is a hoot. Yes he gets excited, yes he goes off on tangents, but if you want to be engaged for 2.5 hours, you will be. He cares about his students and I enjoyed visiting him in his office. If you can't follow a rapid fire professor who is full of passion, this is not for you, however, if you are willing to learn, take this guy.
I like professor joanisse. his readings are much easier than bernstein's and he is willing to adjust if they are not as easy as he thought. he gets a little excited sometimes and it is easy to get lost in his lectures, but overall i find him very engaging.
This professor is someone who is rude. He says inappropriate things in class and enjoy belittling someone. He is everything you would not want in a professor. He absolutely positvely is a jerk. Worst professor at GV. Never makes any sense. We never knew when assignments were due, or what he wanted. Dont take him!!!! I cant believe he teaches a
Joanisse isn't very helpful, and he often talks in circles, but overall I liked his class. It's not a class to take if you're looking for an easy A, but if you legitimately want to think critically and learn, I recommend his class. Yes, he is a bit arrogant, but overall, a good and interesting guy. College isn't supposed to be easy.
Talks in cirlces, not helpful, grades holistically, you either understand what he's talking about or you don't, there's no in between and often times you won't understand what he's talking about.
Joanisse is a blast. I've had him for HNR 233 and other soc courses. He'll help you understand anything, and is always willing to talk about anything during out-of-class time. Easy A in anything he teaches, just read the material eventually.
This was a fun class. Controversial issues raised, but that's what the class is about! Good sense of humor and understanding of the topics discussed. Topics were a bit redundant at the end of class, but otherwise, I loved it.
Joanisse is crazy, but it made the class interesting. Doesn't give out a lot of A's, and there is a lot of reading and writing. Overall a good professor to take for capstone.
Joanisse was a ton of fun! There's quite a bit of work and it's easy to get overwhelmed if you don't keep up with the journals but they're easy enough to write (personally I liked writing them after class discussion). He is very helpful but likes the sound of his own voice a bit too much.
Very fun guy. Had him for junior seminar and for honors social science. Pretty considerate of students if you reason with him about homework. Very engaging, exciting, likes to "act" in class. Randomly barks things and scares the heck out of his students! He seems pretty brilliant, it's surprising he's not renowned w/ published articles, etc.
Joanisse is an all-around great guy. He is brilliant, but sometimes he goes on brilliant tangents and it becomes very very hard to understand where he is going with his speeches. For HNR 233 you are expected to read dense articles, process them, and spit out two papers for each class period. It is VERY easy to get lost and overwhelmed.
Requires A LOT of writing - for every article you read you must write a critique and a journal. At the beginning of the semester we read 4+ articles a week, which was way too much work. After talking to him as a class, he reduced workload to 1-2 articles per week. No need to take notes in class, as there aren't any exams. No textbook either.
He's insane...but one of the few smart professors I've met. Sure, you write a paper every day, but it's a summary of the reading. Not hard, gives 90 percent of the class A's, provided they do the work. I'd recommend taking society and self just to hear Joanisse go off on tangents twice a week.
Crazy professor and so fun to be around. Really makes the course interesting and funny.. If you try, pay attention, and NEVER HAVE YOUR PHONE OUT IN CLASS, you'll be fine
