he rarely teaches anything worth knowing. most of the time is spent telling worthless stories. his tests are based on his opinions. the only reason people go to class is because of unanounced quizes.
While a dismal speaker at best, he is very enthusiastic about Political Science. He's not good at letting the students know what he wants them to know (what's important enough to be on the test). don't take the class if you must have an A.
He's such a JERK. He doesn't let you know what is going to be on the test. His lectures are SO pointless, but you have to go to them cuz of the pop quizzes. If there's any way out of taking his class, go for it.
I love Political Science, and hated this class. Take it with someone else. His lectures are boring, redundant, and pointless. The only reason to go are the Pop Quizzes. Has no concern for the students. I'm usually generous in ratings, check out his.
awful. I have no idea what to study because the lectures do not have anything to do with the readings. Not that I even know which chapters to read.Anyone who has had this prof will recognize this quote... "its in the syllabus!". TA Gary very hel
What he knows about the South or southern politics is minimal. Whole course out of a very few thinly related themes. Ask questions and he'll ask you to wait for the class on that topic, which never comes. Does not make expectations clear, plays favorites
Moody. Very unhelpful, if you have a question about the test during it, he'll talk to you like an idiot even if it's his fault. Doesn't like people to differ with his opinion. Not very nice. TA Gary is awesome.
He has some communication issues, but I swear he's better in the upper level classes. Take him for Southern Politics or one of those he's into, and don't be lazy. He expects a lot. But you can get a lot out of him too.
Great prof. but you must be able to form ideas without them being spoon-fed to you. Whoever said he didn't know about southern pol. should look at ivy league uni's Southern Pol. Class where his writings are used extensively. Very helpful in office hours.
The tests were difficult and the 1 point papers ended up being useless. I also thought the final wasn't what he said it would be. His TA, Gary, was very helpful though.
AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS! The TA Gary was my savior when it came to my grade. Yay for Gary, boo for Scher.
I absolutley LOVED this class. I learned so much about local and state government & how it all works. Prof. Scher was very helpful, and open to opposing views. I plan to take as many of his other classes as possible! If you READ & study - it pays off.
Definitely attend all of the lectures. While he says that the tests are half textbook, half lecture, its not. It seems about 80% lecture.
Awful. Don't take this class unless you have to. I love Poli Sci but Scher will put you to sleep.
Dr. Scher is a really nice guy, very good professor, interesting class although boring at times.
wow, this professor is absolutly horrible. dont EVER take his class if you have the option. this is the only class i have ever had to drop.
horrible teacher! i go to all the lectures and study like crazy for his tests, and i still can't manage to pass decently. this may be the only class i will ever drop. his lectures are boring, he only goes over one point the whole time saying it in 100 different ways. he's very unreasonable!
THIS GUY IS HORRIBLE!!!
He has a very condescending attitude and is arrogant. He has contempt for students who ask questions and will say "I haven't gotten there yet." And then he never gets there! The tests contain little detailed questions that are insignificant to his lectures. I really hated going to this class.
If you are taking this class with this professor... i pray to God that you have a drop left!!
This man is the worst teacher I have ever had. He works on a "added points" basis. If you take a test and get a 15/20 it's five points off your final grade. His lectures are vague at best and he tests things he hasn't covered. If you ask questions during tests he insults you. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
This professor should be fired! I studied for his final exam for 3 days straight and still got a C! Scher's tests are so specific that I don't even think he knows the answer to some of his questions. Avoid him!
This man should be fired!!!! His arrogance gets in the way of everything. When someone asked a question he replies: "SAVE YOUR BREATHE!" Someone who picks grudges with an entire lecture hall should be allowed to "teach." Avoid this man at all costs.
Tests were too hard.
He is the worse professor i have ever had in my entire life, if you have to take any classes witht this man i suggest u find ur self a spot in another class. out of 300 student 2 people got above a 75 % on his first test...that says it all
Scher is a great prof, if you're actually interested in what he's teaching. Learn the material, and you're fine. The people who gave him poor reviews are just bitter because they couldn't hack it.
Ok...where to start? Scher talks about random stuff, he doesn't teach. Exams are hard as hell! Lectures are boring and most of the time your are distracted by his loud shirts and huge belly... sorry but it's the truth. Please avoid this man as a professor...
Call me weird, but I liked this guy. His lectures are interesting; he has a definite point of view and interesting experiences to share; and he brought interesting speakers to class. I got an A, and I worked my ass off, but I enjoyed it. His tests are killer.
sucks
This man is a HORRIBLE teacher! His lectures have nothing to do with the tests whatsoever! I would never recommend this professor to anyone. Not only is this man a horrible teacher, he's also a bit psycho and randomly yells at people when they aren't the ones talking during his boring lectures.
Scher is one of the best teachers i've ever had. I took two of his classes because he has been one of the only few teachers that can sustain my interest. It's true the class is somewhat biased because you have to actually have an open mind to understand
Worst professor i've had at UF. If you're a student who likes to ask questions avoid this professor- he will make you feel like an idiot. I got an A in the class but i don't know how- his tests were very difficult and he never gave us back our tests or reviewed any material before tests.
HUGE JERK!!!!!
he complained about the class getting bad grades on the tests, but he wouldn't answer our questions or give us a review. When you would ask a question, he would complain about how he already covered the topic. Also, he is very rude to you when you ask him a question before or after class.
Easy, hardly went. Didn't even know what was really going on. took him twice. A, the first time and b the second.

Boring!! If this class is required for your major, I strongly suggest take it with another teacher. Not that it is hard, he can be extremely rude at times and really doesn't answer your questions.
AWFUL TEACHER! The lectures are boring. When you approach him for help, he tells you to look it up in the book. He gives you tons and tons of reading that does not relate to the tests. It is the worst class I have ever taken at UF!!!
Don't listen to these other reviews, they were too stupid to pass his class. His lectures are a bit boring, but he makes his point clearly, and questions on tests are almost his direct words at times. Keep up with the reading and you should do fine. I did.
Great teacher! Very interesting with many relavent stories and examples to clarrify his points. His test questions are straightforward and easy if you kept up with the readings. I got an A just by reading what we were told to, and comming to class. Very personable if you make the effort.
He is the most awesome professor! He will stimulate your interest, is always more than happy to help, advise, recommend, his class is more than a lecture, it is an awesome experience,a nd he really likes his students!

I took every thing that he has taught as UF. I really liked him, he is kind of corny at times, but as long as you go every day to class, its really easy to pass. Just don't take him for local and state politics, he sucks and I have heard him admit it him self.
he doesn't answer questions, he doesn't help on exams, his assignments are stupid, and he rambles on in lectures. and i'm not stupid, soooo...
awesome
Great Teacher - by far my fave while I was at UF. Very open minded and stimulating to the class.
GET OUT OF THIS CLASS BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE! I have always been a straight-A student, but I got a "D" in POS2112! Scher's tests are HARD, VERY HARD!! And you have NO opportunities for extra credit and almost NO assigments to help boost your grade. GET OUT.. YOU WILL HATE HIM! There are MUCH easier professors who teach this course!!
He is not a good state and local politics professor at all. He is unfair when it comes to test questions, and his lectures are scattered and without any real construct. If you are a PoliSci major, avoid taking this class altogether if possible.
SAVE YOURSELVES!!! Dont take Scher. His class is terrible, thank the Lord I dropped it before it was too late. If you want your GPA to drop, then he is the way to go.
he's not most interesting person, but i really don't find him that objectionable. you can easily do well if you go to class and definitely read the books since he has test questions directly from the texts them. the tests aren't easy but they're fair. a lot of times he gives several extra credit questions too, which can really help out your grade.
This man is an honest to God joke...he's condescending, rude, and by far the worst professor I've had at UF. I have no doubt he's an intelligent man, but he has no business in the classroom...period. His tests are ridiculously hard, his lectures are incoherent, and did I mention he's a jerk? Avoid this class at ALL COSTS!
Very boring. He's not a bad guy but he's a horrible teacher. His lectures have nothing to do with the material you read. On top of that, he doesn't even assign the readings to begin with. You have to figure it out on your own. The tests aren't hard though. Just read what you think you should be reading and study the notes and you should do fine.
The lectures are unrelated to the tests, the tests are very hard and nitpicky, he doesnt assign readings, and on top of that he is VERY VERY rude when you try to ask him questions about the material. Definitly try and get someone else, at all costs.
He was GREAT! He lets you do things your way, he lets you explore outside of the strict focus of the syllabus, he guides you, he lets you discover things on your own, and will never tell you what to think. He makes you think, and that is exactly was a great professor should do.
Agree with previous rater. Find a passion and Prof Scher will support it. He trusts and respects upper-level students and allows a great deal of freedom in pursuing individual research interests. Open classroom environment makes for honest discussion. Prof enjoys teaching and believes his students can make a change in the world.
Disregard the poor ratings from the whiny undergraduates. College is not supposed to be easy; you are supposed to think for yourself, and Dr. Scher encourages that wholeheartedly. I've never seen him insult someone's position, even when it did not agree with his own. You kids need to go back to Mommy and Daddy and leave college to the adults.
The last few comments on how great he is MUST have been left by his TAs in an attempt to prop up their hero. This man simply should not be teaching at a University. Bad tests, bitter man, overall the worst political science class of all time. And I am a good student--I am not saying this because I wanted it to be easy. Do not take him.
Make no mistake, this man is a horrible professor. I agree with the other comments that independent thinking is important, but he does nothing to foster such thinking, and is extremely rude and abrupt with students who ask questions. In addition, he has absolutely no direction with notes, and does not respond well to criticism of his tests.
If you like footnote type questions and random facts on tests, go for it. One could read everything and have an intelligent conversation about the readings yet do poorly on the tests. The tests do not measure one's knowledge but rather their ability to remember useless information. I am not a fan.
I don't see what everyone else is ****ing about. I'm a C student and managed to pull an A with minimal effort. The guy is sarcastic.. but I don't think you could call him a 'bitter man' just because he points out problems with the current political system. He's a decent prof.

HORRIBLE!!! Angry, biast, unhappy and arrogant. Picks out the smallest details for the tests and is unclear about what material to study.
he sucks. i tried to email him to ask a few questions about the layout of the first exam and he was SO SO SO rude. hes a fat **** who should not be teaching when its so obvious that he hates students.
No doubt that professor Scher is one the best at UF. He is friendly, easy and will go out of his way to help any student. I had him once and he wrote me the most amazing recommendation for grad school. AWESOME. AWESOME. AWESOME.
awesome guy...great teacher...learned alot
Easiest PoliSci classes on campus. No attendance, quizzes, or exams. Just two short papers and a take home final. Overall nice guy and easy A
He's TOUGH. Although he did kindly let me retake a test I missed. He's not heartless, just hard.
Cool upper division class, but I couldn't imagine how he would be in a seminar class. He lets you do what you want, basically, with your papers and such, and talks to you very frankly. Don't really have to go to class, but it is worth it (for upper division).
GREAT teacher, interesting class, very knowledgeable professor who was able to keep us entertained with his movies and other musings.
i love scher!!
Very easy professor. If you like a class where you have complete freedom of choice for topics for papers, you should take this class. No tests, quizzes, or attendance. Two 5 page papers (due near the end of the semester), one 10 page paper (due at the end), and one take home final of 8-10 pages. If you go to class, you will learn.GREAT AND EASY
My favorite professor at UF! I have had 4 of his classes and cannot say enough kind things about Prof. Scher. He is genuinely interested in his students learning and finding out what they think about a variety of topics. I wish there were more professors out there Scher!
If you don't like him then you must be very very lazy!!! Awesome prof!!! Best in the department!!
I'm sorry, but Prof. Scher's lectures are pretty much just useless. It seems that every class he goes off on some unrelated tangent, there is basically no direction in the class, and I'm not even sure WHAT I'm supposed to be learning here. I go to his lectures, I pay attention, but it seems like the guy doesn't really teach anything. He just talks.
The absolute best professor at UF. Scher assigns only papers and as long as you put effort and some intelligence into the paper your guaranteed an "A" (I did not receive a single grade under 100%). You learn so much in his class and if you hate tests and like to think for yourself take his class...you won't regret it; that is unless your lazy.
Professor Scher is an AMAZING teacher! He has extreme enthusiasm for the subject he teaches and entertains the thoughts and concerns of students within his class. No homework (during summer session) and the tests we're all open note. Tests required thought and opinion NOT memorization. I will definetly look to take some more of his classes in t
best prof ever!!! wants to listen to students, sends out emails all the time, but they're really interesting - stuff that you will prob. be glad to have read. helpful, the best prof at UF!
So nice and interesting! He knew tons about the subject, but did tend to go off on tangents A LOT! He is very opinionated, so don't take his class if you always want to disagree with him. Overall, liked him. He seems to have really cool stories.
horrible professor. you won't learn a thing in his class except for his wacky political views. he grades really easy until the end and the screws over anyone who is not his favorites. easy class, but pointless and not worth it in the end. would definitely not take another class with him!
I took all the classes he offers and wish he offered more. At first he was a bit intimidating. He is an awesome professor that covers really relevant issues without making it difficult. I can have the most obscure classes that will cover topics I learned in his classes. I definitely recommend food politics, it's an amazing course!
Awesome professor! Really nice and helpful! Answers emails promptly. Class consists of reaction papers (to readings) and film papers, plus a final paper and a final project. All assignments suuuuper easy! Would def. take class over again and all others offered by him as well!
This professor is horrible! I looked at the past comments about how good of a professor he is WHICH HE IS NOT! He grades based on his political views not academically so if you are little conservative in your papers it will hurt your overall grade. If you care about your grade do not gamble taking this professor.Trust me I did and I paid the price
This was my second class I have taken with Scher. It is an easy A, but you learn absolutely nothing and class is very boring. I would not take this class if you want to walk away from it learning a little.
The class is laid back, fun, and easy, at first. But beware: just because he gives you 100s on the first few essays, doesn't mean you'll get an A in the class. I was severely disappointed by my grade in the end. I think it's unfair to screw students over on the last exam. I'm usually an A student, and this class dropped kicked me. Avoid.
(Food Politics) Scher discusses some VERY interesting topics, but overall class discussion was low, so talk and he'll know you! Shows relevant movies in class (really enjoyed those). Went to the farmers market b/c of his class and LOVED it! Class can be dry at times. Didnt buy any books. No attendance taken. Quintessential easy A class.
Great professor! He really loves what he does and the class is an easy A if you just show up! Took it during the Summer term and had no problems.
Scher will make you care. He's really into everything he says and he wants to make a difference. His papers are not bad at all, you just need to show that you made an effort and care about the subject.
Professor Scher is a very passionate man; he truly loves food and its relation to politics. He is very approachable and cares about his students. He really wants you to succeed, so don't be scared to drop by his office. This class is an easy A if you do what is required (the readings are not required) and get to know him a bit to earn his respect.
His classes are wonderful and interesting. He is very passionate and as long as you come to class and put in some effort you'll get an A. Also no midterm and the final is a take-home 5 page comprehensive paper. Highly recommendeded!
Scher is awesome. He definitely has some set views but you certainly don't have to agree with them to earn an A (as some ppl said). He is really enthusiastic about everything he teaches and KNOWS HIS ****. I've never learned more about any subject from 1 class. (That goes for his food politics class as well). Take him, you'll be glad you did.
Anyone who says Scher is difficult is lying to you. I've had him 3 semesters in a row now. You do not need to come to class, although I do because his lectures are very interesting. He knows what he's talking about and he genuinely cares about his students. No textbooks. Highly recommended!
Money and Politics - Really easy class, your grade is based on 10 1-page summaries of articles he sends you, 3 book reviews, and one cumulative 5 page final. No need to go to class, but it will help you in the final. Really intelligent and nice guy even though he is extremely liberal. Keep your opinions in check if you are a conservative
Prof Scher is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. I am an English major and took his course as an elective toward my BA and am so glad I did. He is SO knowledgable and LOVES what he does and seeing his students succeed. I plan on taking him again in the future, for sure! (Communicates wonderfully - responds to emails in no time!)
This is my second class with Scher and he is a great teacher. Yes, he is very liberal, but the topics he covered in this Modern Political Campaigning class were pretty interesting. He does tend to screw you over sometimes with one of the 3 or 4 papers he requires for the class which could end up lowering your grade a lot.
If your IQ is higher than a potato, you will get an A in this class. I spent everyday on facebook, didn't read anything, and did the papers the night before. He is pretty boring and goes off on rants all the time, but who cares? He's the easiest polisci prof UF has and requires hardly any work.
Complete waste of time. I was sincerely interested in State/Local politics, yet I gained nothing useful from this class. Scher is nice enough but tends to go on these tangents that leaves even the most conscious student confused. Easy A for sure, but only take his class if you want to learn nothing.
Very passionate about the subject. Clear he wants to incite same passion in students. Go to class occasionally, remain interested in the topic, and do all assignments and you should be fine.
Very passionate about what he teaches and very laid-back when it comes to attendance and grading. Took food politics and money politics and there's about 5 papers for each of his classes but really easy and you can go to his office hours and he'll help you a lot. such a nice professor!!
Gave 60% of the class Ds on the final after teacher evaluations were due. Taught a course that most students did not attend because attendance was not required and all papersgroup projects could be turned in outside of class. Ironically he taught a food politics course preaching about nutritious eating as a morbidly obese professor. Do not take.
You write 2 papers and do 2 group projects. As long as you have a decent group and can write, it's an easy A. Lectures aren't mandatory.
Scher is what conservatives think all college professors are like. He is a raging liberal, a full-on flamboyant Democrat. Your grade is made up of 4 papers and as long as you write about how poverty is bad and corporations are evil you will get an A. His class is completely pointless, which is a shame because the subject matter is interesting.
Professor Scher's class was an absolute delight. It was a unique subject and he really made students think about the importance of food and politics. Attendance is not mandatory, which is a huge help, considering how busy all of us are. That being said, I did attend many lectures just because of how interesting it was. Highly recommended!
