Don't even take this course with him. His tests are hard, quizzes are hard, you'll end up withdrawing halfway thru the semester. I recommend Dr. Roseanne Hoffman. She's the complete opposite of Kern and a very good Prof. She won an award for god sakes!
If you are good at math he's a great teacher but don't take his classes if you math is not your subject.

Oh...my...god! His tests aand quizzes are hard. If you don't understand the material and if you fail your test before the midterm, WITHDRAW NOW. He also gives you a project to do. It's also hard. But you won't hafta do it if you have R. Hoffman for MAT131
DON'T. JUST DON'T. Unless if you want to repeat this course over again. His tests & quizzes are HARD and passing his Final is a nothing but a pipedream. If you don't understand the material, he gives you attitude. Total Ass.
Knows what he is talking about. However his tests can be hard.
very hard knows the material but gun ho he will not stop to take a breath so hold on and get ready for a ton of homework
Need I say more?
He's a good teacher just as long as you're not writting notes in class or talking while he's talking. OH and don't fall asleep in class or else you will face complete humiliation in front of your class. But yea, other than that, he's a good teacher.
Exams are not easy and he give students assignments which involve computer programs, such as Derive etc. These assignments are not important to understand math, but they take a lot of time to complete.
he is very bad
ugh....couldn't stand this guy! Tests were too hard so I withdrew halfway thru the semester. DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY IF YOU HAVE NO BACKGROUND IN STATISTICS/OR IF YOU SUCK IN MATH. YOU'LL REGRET IT. I know I did....
Tough course, he's not too bad though
very bad professor
Montco needs to find more female Calculus teachers because there are too many male chauvinist's in this department. You are paying for your education and I cant beleive my money went toward paying this guy. Do not take him if you are a female ! I highly recommend Mr.Moyer or Ms.Smith.
This is by far the best math professor I have had. He is really skillful at teaching the subject. I would recomend everyone to take him if you can.
Took his MAT131 class. Hated it from Start, Middle and Finish!? Total ass he was...wish I could sum him up without using foul language.
Very difficult but he does care. You mind will spin but in the end you will have learned alot. I spent 4 hours a night on homework during a summer class with him but in the end I got an A so if you have a desire to learn take him.
Ok..I'm in the midst of writing a letter of complaint to the head of the mathematics department about this professor. He Lectures too quickly and by the time students get 1 concept, he's already halfway thru the other. Tests/quizzes are hard. If you're not good @ math & you have Kern, w/draw now!!!
I think he thinks he is all that and a bag of chips! I really don't like him!
Goes thru material way too fast, has a cocky attitude, and exams are tough. Same goes for the quizzes. If possible, avoid taking a course of his that spans over two months.
He is the worst teacher i have ever had. Not helpful at all. Goes thru material too fast. And he just doesnt care about how you are keeping up. Please DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
Extremely tough, i managed a B, barely, lets you have notecards, but tests are like 1.5 hours worth in 1 hour!
super teacher, i reccomend his class!
he is a very bad professor. dont take his class.

In short.....Stay away! Unless you already know math really well you shouldn't take this man's course.
I had this guy for calc 1 and 2. A in the first class, and still taking calc 2, but with an A so far. He explains everything in easy to follow clear language. Very good teacher. If your falling behind maybe your just not good at math
Had to w/draw right before my final. This guy is an awful instructor! If you take him, you'll know why. He should get the reward of "Worst Prof. of the Year." I wouldn't take him again if you paid me my tuition back or if you gave me a trip to the Carribean..
This instructor made me cry....NO JOKE. Need I say more????
I had no idea what the guy was talking about and ran to withdraw like I was heading for the last chopper out of Saigon in '75. He breezes thru material so fast and before you know it, the period's already over...
Great teacher, esp. if you need extra help. This teacher was willing to go over any math subject we had problems with.
This is a pretty tough course. I do not necessarily recommend taking it unless you have to. Professor Kern is really a good teacher though. He's very explicit on how to do things. The course is rather fast paced, however I do not see how it couldn't be because there is a lot of material. I will say though, I find the pop quiz system purposeless.
This is all I have to say about this instructor: HE SUCKS....BIG TIME!!!
Took this course and w/drew one day before the final exam. I did not care for his personality and his teaching methods leave something to be desired....
THIS MAN IS A COMPLETE ASS. today i didn't take my notes in class, and he told me to get out of the classroom and to drop the class. after telling him off, because this isn't the first time he flipped out at me for something rediculous, i walked out of class only to turn around and see a huge smile on his face. i told him to go to hell.
I cannot think of anything positive or good to say about Richard. He finds pleasure in making students feel bad and does not care if he hurts them. A prof who makes his students cry is someone who should not be teacing...AT ALL. Did any1 see his pic on his website? I'm still traumatized by that!? The word DORK comes to mind...
I'd rate his teaching a 1.5 out of 10. I'd rate his personality a ZERO, & the courses that he teaches a 2 out of 10. His personality SUCKS. Actually, he has no personality. He's this big nerd who worships the TI83 calculator. The only thing remotely interesting was his socks/other clothing choices. Imagine what he was like 20 yrs ago...UGH![Cringe]
Rude. Plain and simple. Should not be teaching. Personality SUCKS! I knew he was a jerk the minute I heard him speak. If you can, take the class with another teacher.
I was a bit shocked when I read the other student reviews. I found kern to be an excellent teacher and I know I'm not the only one because the average grade for our class was a B. What I liked was that the info covered in class is what is on the tests and I never had a problem following his lectures.
I have my concerns about this one...sad, sad, sad situation. He does bear watching.
Complete ass who enjoys making students' lives miserable. Breezes thru course material way too fast, gives really hard quizzes and....well, he made me cry. I had to w/draw halfway thru has course b/c of his exams. I cried b/c I had to repeat this course. Thank god I graduated. No more Kern!!!!
I do not recond him, cause he goes through too quickly and his tests are....hard and he is a very hard greader, takes points of for everything!!! his teaching style is very weird /:)
Bad Teacher, made mistakes teaching an 011 class! I didnt come cause it was **** and I didnt no of the attendance policy and he dropped my grade from a C to a D so I have to "take the class again" but im just going to take a clep. Do not take this jackass
He is a very good professor. Tests and quizes are a little difficult, but he prepares you for them. I would definately recomend that people take his classes in Math: 011, 100,131, 132.
He is straight forward but can be a easily upset if things go wrong
He is rude, arrogant. Whenever you go to him for help he treats you like crap and pushes you out of his office. He is highly sarcastic and makes a lot of mistakes in class.
He is kind of a jerk but prepares you for tests. He has a random temper.
Review from adt student. Kern is very, very hard. I wanted to drop his class, but stuck it out because he was the only one to teach it and I did not want to repeat. Tests take entire class period. Pay attn - you will have a quiz every week even if he doesn't warn you. Find a study buddy. It helped tremendously. I earned my A by skin of my teeth.
Calc 2 is a hard class and not easy; however, if you do the assigned/recommended hw you should be fine. Also, try to keep your notes organized and make sure to attend every class. He does get upset over little things so if he says there will be pop quizzes do not ask him everyday if there is going to be a quiz (someone did this in my class)...
Mr. Kern is a hard teacher, but he is a brilliant mathmatician! I definitely recommend him for beginning math classes because he prepares his students for more difficult material. I am changing my schedule over the summer to get him for Stat 2! I know when I leave his class I will KNOW the material! However, he is a difficult grader!
Do Not Take him for anything. Very Hard for no reason. Take Mr Klarman for Stat II, much better teacher and Does not have a bad attitude like Kern. His class I withdrew from and Got a High A in Mr. Klarman's class.
Tests are ridiculously difficult. Take someone else.
I wanted to stick it out but when u get an F before the Final Exam....and the F is also your current grade going in to it...you know you're screwed.
Professor Kern is an extremely hard professor. The class is near impossible if you need to take it online, but hes the only one who does it online. He sends out an angry email after tests to students telling us 80% of the class failed and how disgusting and a disgrace this is. He was no help at all when I asked either. Be warned!!!
this professor is really hard in grading.don't take his clasees because it is really hard to pass a course with him.don't take with him.his exams are really hard.
Kern was great. He explained the material very well, and i did very well. He grades fairly, but is willing to work with you if you show the effort. I wish i had taken calc2 with him before transfering to temple, very bad professors there in the math dept.
He teaches good, but he was the hardest professor that i've ever had.His exam's are realy hard.don't take class with him unless you want to waist time and money!!!!!!!!!!
"He sent an angry email after tests to students telling us 80% of the class failed and how disgusting and a disgrace this is." Has the head of the math dept seen this email? If he did, would Kern still be teaching at MCCC? Send that email over now and watch heads spin!!
Very good yet hard teacher. Teaching is crystal clear, but exam is very hard. Although you get partial points, he takes points off for every tiny mistake. After many sleepless nights only to keep up with the class, I can say I learned a lot. If you like math and challange, I recommend Pf. Kern's class
very hard class.DDDDDDDDDDDDOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNOT Take any course with him.
Prof. Kern was without question one of the hardest teachers I've ever had, but I have learned volumes. His tests are hard, but he gives handouts with everything he expects you to know. Definitely not a course you can skate through, but a great value for your money. When you're done you will be able to use Stat.
This is the worse teacher I've ever had in my life. Besides if you are an international student don't take it. He hates foreign students. We started 16 students at the second week we were just 4 in that classroom.

prof. moves very quickly and his tests are VERRRRY hard. He's very serious and when you ask a question you can tell he gets frustrated. Overall, DO NOT take this class unless you have VERY solid math skills.
Very, very difficult. I went in with an open mind and now I'm dropping it because I don't have a shot at passing his class.
His class requires A LOT of time and work. He is a jerk but teachers material really well. To pass his course you gotta know your **** and do ALL HOMEWORK!!! Tests are difficult to get an A on...I don't think anyone got an A in calc 3 class last semester. So if you want to know material take his class but you wont get a good grade!@
i took his mat 100b class. it was hard! his tests are exactly like the review test. he made his own textbook and gives it to you on the first day so that saves you money. but alot of people dropped from my class. you really have to know your math. sometimes he was annoyed that we were asking questions b/c we didn't understand what he ws doing.
Professor Kern teaches so good, but his exams are really hard. So if you want to learn something its a good idea to take a course with him,but you should be aware that you might end up to widraw your course right before your final.
This guy teaches pretty well and requires a lot of effort. For anyone who does not consider math as their strong point, you will struggle. He looks down upon those who are not familiar with underlying material (ie: algebra within calc). Avoid unless you are a math person, or you will drop.
Dear god! He's STILL teaching here?! If you're okay at math, don't expect to pass. Expect to withdraw right before his midterm.
Good teacher but hard grader
I got through 5 math courses in this school with As to show for it before I had the misfortune of bumping into this teacher. I eventually withdrew before I would need his signature. Problem is, he teaches nearly all the high level classes unfortunately.
Quiz every week. Do all homework and ask a lots of questions in class and out of class if needed. Tests are hard and he is a picky grader. Find the hardest problems out of each homework assignment and they will be on the test-only harder! Offers help out of class and responds to emails quickly. Will make you earn every point of your grade! TOUGH!
Do ALL your homework, ASK questions, STUDY for tests and you will get by. You must have a somewhat strong background in math to pass this course. He is a tough teacher but the material is equally hard. Weekly quiz rewards those who did their homework. Don't fall asleep, be late or miss many classes. This advice is the only way to pass! good luck!
Good teacher, tough (and sometimes unfair) grader. For example, we were told not to bother simplifying logarithmic derivatives, so I didn't--and he took points off my test for not simplifying. Tests are harder than most of the homework problems. Review your notes right before quizzes.
He is very good at teaching but his tests and quizzes are very hard.
He is a very good teacher and explains everything really well. I am good at math and have an A without doing any of the homework, but some people in my class are struggling. If you are not good at math this course will require a lot of work
Very hard teacher, quizes every other class, tests and finals are tough. If math isn't your strong subject please considering another teacher. His grading is completely unfair
If you are fairly good at math and willing to work hard, you may do well in his classes. If you do not feel math is your forte, beware. He covers a lot of material and expects you either to know what is going on or to get tutored on your own time. His notes/lectures are excellent though.
Prof. used to work in industry but couldn't hack it. Instead, he's teaching. Not much of a personality and could use a bit of guidance from other seasoned Profs at school. Not endearing or interested in things beyond the exactness of the syllabus. His grading is pedantic and points are taken off for the most minute things. Would not take again.
Wow! What a clown. This guy gives examples a problems that are completely irrelevant. Like, ah - why do problems that require calculators which round to the 10^9 decimal place ... really. Most college Professor are realistic about their rounding, like 2, 3, or 4 value. His logic statements are intendfed to confuse not to develop new learning. AVOID
He is too hard and mean.don't take him..
His way of teaching math is awesome. In his summer session, I had 13 quizzes and 4 exams plus 1 final. He is the best math teacher I have ever seen in my life, but his quizzes and exams are little hard !
Not a pleasant or friendly attitude. Keeps you tence and intimidating. Very often would not cover enough for the homework (although, he seems to cover a lot) and then you have to write a quizz without proper preparation. Tests are rather difficult. Be fast during his exams!if you can...Not very interested in your success.
This is defiantly not an easy A. If you are going to be a math professional this teacher will help prep you for the real world, but if you are taking this class for a core requirement, or have no desire to continue in Mathematics... avoid this teacher. A bit condescending, and very hard on the students.
he had a my way or the highway attitude, I did not like that nor understand how someone can have that esp. in math, theres tutors for a reason, and thats if you do not understand the instructor then you go to a tutor to find an easier way. he took points off for the littlest things which I believe was unfair.
Awful teacher, very condecending, laughs at students and is unfair.
I really enjoyed his class. I was never good at math and hated it before taking Kern's class. He is an excellent teacher and explains the material very well. Gives a lot of quizzes, which is good. Tests are challenging, but there are no surprises. His class is wonderful as long as you plan on trying and showing up.
Terrible teacher but easy class. Asks for the most tedious info (write an essay for every answer!)I feel smarter than him most of the time.
Terrible attitude! When other math teachers gave their final in multiple choice, Kern refused. Saying that the other math teachers were lazy and that is why the chose to offer multiple choice for the final. Gets off by intimidating the class! Don't take this teacher!
This guy is pretty legit! My first class with him made me think poorly of him, but after my final class I realized I had actually learned something! Now in my senior year of a BS degree in MechEng, I can't thank him enough! He may seem like a hard ass at times, but he really teaches you and makes you earn your grade. He prepares you well!
I really liked math but man was this class hard. there were no lectures or videos which would have helped since it was an online class. I cannot say if he is a bad teacher but if you take an online class do not pick him. I asked a question once and I felt like a moron for asking and he did not even help me understand.
Expect regular quizzes. Stay on top of those and you should be alright. Video lectures were pretty clear, never had to work with him directly, but he seemed alright. Campy sense of humor. I saw a complaint about no multiple choice, but he gives partial credit on wrong answers if you're on the right track. Keep on top of things and you'll be OK
HORRIBLE teacher! He is not willing to help his students at all. Told me multiple times that he could not help me outside of class. Takes off points on quizes for not doing it "his way". instead of clarifying what his students do not understand he gives graded work that counts on your weekly quizes that he only gives you five minutes to do.
horrible teacher. doesnt show work. his answers in his "book" he made are wrong. overall he sucks. very mean and laughs at people. NEVER TAKE HIM
This was an on-line course; never met Kern. Exams and grading were fair. Course videos and materials were fairly clear. Would have liked more on-line interaction but overall was good course, learned the material, and feel ready for Calc II.
I have never disliked anyone so much in my entire life. He is honestly one of the worst human beings I have ever met in my life. I cry (not exaggerating) almost every time I had to do my homework because I didn't understand. GET ANOTHER PROFESSOR, trust me.
worst teacher i've ever had at this school. Never rated any teacher before but this guy is the worst so had to give people a heads up. stay away if you want to pass stat DO NOT TAKE HIM. You have to be a teacher's pet for him to pass you.
Mr. Kern is a great teacher to take for engineering and math majors. But, if u plan to slack off, don't expect to pass. However, if ur willing to put in Lots of work, take Kern. He is one of the best teachers in Montco.
I think hes a great teacher, one of the best one I've had. I don't know why so many people seemed to dislike him, his quizzes, tests and grading is fair and he teaches well. He could make himself more available outside the classroom for extra help. He improves your grade if you participate and have good attendance.
I don't understand why he has so many negative views. Took for both MAT100 and Statistics. Stat is hard, but he explains everything very clearly and is more than willing to answer questions. As long as you show you care about your grade, he'll help you out. Great teacher, the other people on here were just too lazy to show up to class.
Overall, he is wildly knowledgeable about the topics he teaches. Do not question the material as you will learn in this class. It is not easy and with 5 classes, it is ALOT of work for 1 class. However, his attitude and people skills are more offensive than sour milk. Very tension stricken class & you will feel belittled at the conclusion of class.
This teacher is just not good at all. His quiz/homework instructions are very confusing. He's also very particular and will almost always find a reason to take points off. Just a shame that students have to deal with him.
I'm a retired engineering Director - Lockheed Martin. I was seeking a refresher course in discrete math since the last I had it was 30+ years ago. This guy was very caustic and deficient in many ways. He reminds me of someone trying impress others - without the credentials of an earned doctorate. Judging by other comments, why is he at Montco?
Stay away from this professor. Worst professor I had to deal with...by FAR. Everything said below are true. Again, why is he still at montco?
I never write negative reviews, but he himself is awful. His quizzes involve answers from chapters you haven't studied. He uses material from his on-campus class which is stupid since online classes are more involved,He changed his syllabus during the middle of the semester. He will never give you 100% on ANYTHING,He has multiple MATH errors on EXAMS
He does not teach very well. I have been depending on the book and the internet to teach me. He will go over problems in class but i still walk out of the class confused. You've been warned, don't take him!
Kern is the worst professor EVER. He makes everything so much more complicated. I'm literally paying a tutor to help me pass this semester and I'm still on the edge of failing. He takes off points if you don't solve the problems HIS way even if the answers are right. he is probably the rudest person I have ever encountered. He's a very negative man
I took his Intermediate Algebra course and passed with flying colors, for some reason for Precalc II all of his professional demeanor diminishes and all you have left over is a professor looking to fail students and an extremely tough grader. It must be because his book is no longer sold and he's mad about not making extra money on the side.
I took this class as an online course over summer to get my math requirement out of the way for credit towards my degree at my University. I could'nt have made a bigger mistake. Kern only covers the EASIEST forms of problems in his lectures and notes, and then places extremely hard questions on his exams. Even my tutor couldn't help me frequently.
Sarcastic, don't seem to care much what students think about him (my impression) . Usually quick in response to emails (+). Tough grader.
Mr. Kern gave me a new definition of Freudians theory, anal retention. He was a horrible teacher, and was mean and belittling to students. His teaching is poor, at best. He is quoted as saying math is cool, not just at school. REALLY I will start seriously hugging my child more often bc I do not want him to have his complex. Seriously.
The way he teaches is ok. He makes the material easy to understand. Just pay attention and do your homework and you won't get lost, however he tales off points for the dumbest little details on tests and quizzes. His attitude is kinds off tho. Also this man said that class participation was 50% of the grade!?? That makes no sense.
He takes points off for every little thing on a test.
You get the grade you work for in his class. He will help you if you ask. His attitude makes class really dreadful, however. He just looks like he hates his job 24/7.
Worst Professor. He is a tough grader. He is very precise with his answers. Rude to his students.
Lectures are hilarious, very informative. Prepare to commit a lot of time to homework/quizzes/exams. Material is laid out clearly and makes sense. Professor Kern gives good feedback on things and continually provides feedback for improvement. Not an easy class but very beneficial. I'm going to try to get him for higher math classes.
Complete rude teacher. DO NOT TAKE.... YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!
Took his MAT 125 class online and I regret every day of it... He dose online videos but only goes over easy examples and throws really hard and confusing questions on the quizzes. His grading is strict to the point it seems like he gets a kick out of failing people, I got points taken away for saying "2424" and not "2424 people", beware!!!
tough grader
Best way to describe him? RUDE. Obnoxiously rude. This man cares about one thing and that's his paycheck. Do not expect him to help you. He prefers to ignore students, and when he can be bothered, demean them all with a sarcastic undertone.
His quizzes and tests are seriously hard. If you're taking one of his classes for transfer credit, find someone else. Okay at teaching, likes authority. He's fine to talk to after class or during office hours. Don't expect to get the grade you want.
He is cool but a hard teacher and strict.
Do not take his classes. If you want a rude, disrespectful teacher that says would help you but does the complete opposite be my guest. I asked him if he had any tutoring or videos that would help me understand better but he just said, "We did everything on Wednesday." A teacher is supposed to help you. But this man does not care about you at all.
Has an extremely rude attitude & does not care much about the students grades. Seems to have pleasure in making the tests way more difficult than the problems discussed in class. Never expect to receive 100% on a test in this class, he's very nitpicky with his grading, even though he claims to be reasonable. Likes things done HIS way, or no way.
He's honestly the strictest professor. His teaching skills are okay, but when it comes to tests and quizzes, he's the literally the pickiest grader. He takes off points for the littlest mistakes made.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. He has 4 tests that determine your grade and quizs that don't effect your grade, he never makes sense when he talks and doesn't offer any help. If you care about how you spend your money, DONT take him.
This teacher is easily one of the most difficult teachers on campus let alone Calculus. Honestly this is a teacher for students going into Physics or Engineering since he makes you work for the grade you want to earn. So if you're not good in math, he's probably not a good choice for you.
Made the mistake of not using this site before the semester, and now I am really suffering the consequences. I was looking to take this course as a transfer credit, but if anything his class is bringing me down. Enjoys making test/quizzes way harder than classwork. Would rather see you fall behind and fail than pass his class. Absolutely terrible!!
Was not clear in instructions given during class and regularly contradicts info in textbook he made himself.
Contrary to what most people have said, I think Kern is a very good proff. I took his online class(6 week) and he was very clear about expectations. The instructional videos were great and the written HW examples where also very good as well. He is a very serious grader and doesn't let much slide. Make sure you follow his process.
Don't Take Him. Full Stop.
Beware people ! If you have the option to take another teacher for this course then please be happy and use it. Someone mentioned here that he always does the easy questions and gives the toughest questions in the tests , I feel like I have to emphasize that since it is absolutely true. I like working for my grade but he is absolutelyhardtoplease!
Everything need to be done the way he does it in class. Would suggest you don't take this class 2/3 of the class ended up dropping this class anyway.
To be fair , he gives out everything at the beginning of the semester. His syllabus clearly states what his requirements are and such. Still with all the warning signs , if you continue to take his class then I guess its on you. Well my point is save your money people!
I did not really got many help
Kern is a great professor. You definitely have to earn his respect by working hard but once he knows you're serious about the class, he's very nice. Very tough grader, hard to get an A, but a lot of fun if you're looking for a challenge and you will really know the material afterwards.
I passed his class but seriously made my life so miserable. My friend took the other professor for the same subject this semester and rn she is ballin with 100 %. Lesson : Try to avoid him if you can.
Class is nothing but tests. His answers to your questions aren't always specific, and if you don't show him 100% effort you pretty much don't matter to him.
I spent AT LEAST 6 hours a day. I went to a tutor everyday as well. Did every homework problem (30+ a day) and never got anything above 80%. I participated more than the entire class combined, and never got my grade rounded (he said he would if you participate). Got an 86% in calc 1, and an 88% in calc 2, but a C in precal 2. Nitpicky AF on tests.
I actually think Professor Kern is a great professor. He taught the material in a way that was easy to understand. Pay attention in class and if you do the hw you will do well in his class because the hw prepares you perfectly for the exams. I hated that he took points off for the smallest errors, but besides that I have no complaints.
Just read all the other comments, they are pretty accurate. Very Nitpicky on grading.
I had to drop this class... professor wanted essays for every math question on the homework, and there were A LOT of problems. Homework was due once a week, and there was a quiz every single week. However, tests were worth most of the points. I'm serious, there is a lot of writing, and this leaves you at his mercy with ambiguous grading.
He assigns non graded homework problems from the textbk for practice, but then the problems on the quiz or test will be different from what you were assigned to practice in the homework, so it throws you for a loop. Exams are LONG & hard especially the final. He is rather emotionless and will never sympathize with you or even respond to your email.
Just pick any other teacher. I think he enjoys failing students.
This professor is just horrible.
I actually had to talk to the Dean of STEM about this guy, as I questioned his capabilities as an instructor. His own textbook that he requires you buy is FILLED with typos and incorrect answers. I'm glad I knew the material beforehand, because if I had to learn it from him, I'd be lost completely. Do NOT take his courses, it just enables him.
He teaches the basics of the topic while the exams and quizzes goes into a whole different dimension of what he actually taught. If you take the online version of his class prepare to use Khan Academy to actually learn something because his lectures goes over the bare bones of what you need to know for the tests.
AWFUL. Tests and Quizzes are totally different then the book. enjoys failing students, HW and tests. Does not provide feedback. Save yourself some time, and don't take his class.
His final is worth 100% of your grade. The end. At the very last moment he announces that the final is 100% of your grade, if you fail the final (which is very hard and very long) you fail the entire class.
Online calc 2 is horrible barely any help and only shows very easy examples and then the homework problems are completely next level
The lectures he gives have simple problems whereas tests and quizzes are VERY difficult. He barely responds to emails and was rude when I went to him for help. He makes problems hard because we have the internet, but there's rarely a solution online that's even close to the problems he makes up.
Where do I begin, overall hes a nice dude but he just cant teach for the life of him. If you take his class make sure you study the problems on the note packet handouts because 80% of his test questions come right from it. The quizzes are basically hit or miss, note there are around 10-13 of them and each is worth 10 points. Good luck...
Professor Kern has a very straight forward teaching interaction with students. Very Easy to speak with and allows Q&A every class.
I took Prof. Kern for differential equations and I enjoyed him, however is is very demanding. Do all the homework (which is optional) because he bases the exams on similar questions. A weekly 10 pt. quiz gives you lots of chances for points. Show him respect and do the work and he will respect you. DO NOT take him for lower-level math cources.
Be careful, this professor will deduct points for even the smallest mistakes. He is a very tough grader and you will more than likely be very frustrated through this course. His tests and quizzes barely resemble the notes he gives. Be prepared to put in a lot of extra hours to self-teach. If you can, avoid this professor.
The homework never matched the tests. Quizzes are straight forward. He is not really a friendly guy. Lots of homework. He does go over any questions from the homework, but sometimes its hard to follow along.
He will find or even really make up such minute things to deduct points for. Almost like he looks forward to taking off as many points as possible. Nothing will ever satisfy this guy so you better be ready to put more work into all these tiny little minor details than the amount to actually answer the question correctly.
Taking an online math class I had low expectations to begin with. I had previously taken this same calc2 and UofSC ( there math 142). I started week one by logging in and getting ready to watch his lecture and reassure my self on the subject. Turns out it was a 3-minute youtube video of a dude who I had seen many moons ago, not named Richard Kern.
DO NOT TAKE! Lots of quizzes and tests with no clear grading criteria. The videos are not even his own, and are sometimes completely different than the HW and quiz questions.
STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS! This was one of the worst experiences in my math career. Its not that the class is hard its that the teacher grades so intensely and takes off points for the most benign things. I feel bad for anyone entering one of his classes bc I remember the pain of the first few weeks.
He doesn't make his own lectures. Only 2010 youtube videos, but he will take off points for techniques used IN those videos because they're not how he likes it done. Takes off points for everything, even boxing an answer. Tests & quizzes have material not learned yet on them. Spent more time on this 4 credit class than my 17 credits last semester.
his way or the highway. tiny differences between your work and his answer key result in deducted points, even if your work is good and answers are correct. He clearly doesn't understand that this is not how real life is and you should have the freedom to solve problems the way you feel comfortable as long as the answers are correct. DO NOT TAKE.
One of the worse teachers or professors I have ever came across. I would not trust him to teach a baby to walk. If you can avoid this man please do you will end up wanting to drop the joke that he calls a class
Difficult course. Smallest mistake will cost you. But if you can get through it you will definitely be a better student and thoroughly understand the material. It's more of a question of whether it's worth the difficulty.
I despised this class. I had cried for hours for multiple nights because of this course. His grading is incredibly harsh and his videos are vague. His feedback was ok but it wasn't always clear. This was a PAINFUL class. I would rather get hit by a train, than to retake it.
His questions are poorly worded, often vague, and his grading is inconsistent and pedantic. Weekly quizzes 10pts each and 4 tests. 1/2pt (5%) per notation error which he finds liberally (many errors he docks you points for WILL be found on his own answer sheet he releases after every assignment). Good lectures on material, TERRIBLE grading & exams.
His grading is absolutely horrible! He is a very tough grader and his grading does not match up with his answer keys. Does not get back to emails easily either. Would not take him ever again.
He was a very tough grader. The quizzes and tests were very difficult and time-consuming. The textbook was basically a $200 practice sheet. His lectures were useful, but they didn't totally cover what you needed to know. I was always left with a lot of questions. It would help if you didn't have to rely on tutoring to know the subject.
He was the worst professor I have ever had. I spent thousands (yes, thousands) of dollars to pay for a tutor during his course (who is the head of the math department at another college) and even she did not understand his grading or critiques. He will take off points for everything and I feel as though he does not want students to succeed.
Seems bitter. Basic examples in class, cleverly composed problems on HW and test. Forgets "developing an idea" is both student&teacher responsibility. Accuses entire class of cheating if he sees multiple "bizarre nonstandard solutions" despite never working out complex examples in class. Even put non-covered material on exam, admitted it later. -1
I shouldve listened to the comments warning me about this professor. I took his online asynchronous class and spent hours figuring out his quizzes. He only provided short YouTube videos with few examples and then added material we hadnt learned on quizzes and exams. Then he wouldnt explain why an answer was marked off and took off petty points.
Asynchronous calculus is difficult but lack of examples and heavy book use definitely make it harder. Videos are short and nondescript with weekly quizzes that are graded very tough for work.
He is absolutely terrible, unless you are pretty decent on calc to begin with this class is almost impossible to complete. He teaches the material one way and expects it to be done the same exact way. He takes off points on the smallest things and is rude when we don't work with him. The only good thing is that he made like one or two funny jokes.
Horrible professors who does not motive student to do better .
This professor was easily the worst instructor I have ever had. He does not want students to succeed and is very test and exam heavy. He takes off petty points and expects you to work through the problems the SAME EXACT way he does them. Do not take this professor, and tutors do NO GOOD. BEWARE.
His courses are structured around all the tests and quizzes he hands out. This wouldn't be a problem if the content on those assignments matched those of his lecture notes / videos. Everything he teaches is surface level information, while everything on the tests are a lot more complex. The homework problems he provides don't help either.
By far professor Kern is the worst professor of all. Don't bother emailing him because you'll never get a response. And get ready to lose points for as little as wrong spelling in a MATH quiz. He is the TOUGHEST grader there is. I wish I knew about this website before taking him. So, please please DO NOT take him if you care about your GPA.
The worst professor I ever took, his grading is absolutely horrible he expects a paragraph to go with every answer. Would mark you wrong if you did not use his methods, even though you got the right answer. He would also take points off if your answer is off by a decimal point. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
Such a horrible horrible horrible teacher I've ever experienced. I really wasted all the money and my time in this class to try to get the credit but he made it such a hard time. Please never ever take him even though he's the only one who teaches, you gonna end up failing the class anyways.
Please let the students live, he doesn't even give partial credit and asks to show full work.... for what? you will take all the points if the answer is wrong anyways.
I don't know what to tell ya. I think he's really, really good. I learned plenty of tricks on how to approach some pretty tough problems that came in handy in future courses. Kern is a pretty funny, sweet guy. Often stays late to run help sessions. He clearly cares and he's descriptive when instructing how to solve those bad boys.
Multiple homework assignments dumped upon students every day, with a severe lack of instruction. Links are carelessly put into coursework instead of proper lecturing.
Took online, attendance is not "mandatory, but if you dont participate you will fail. And even if you do, you still will. I say uses textbook because it's required, but none of what he "taught" was from the book. Hardly any partial credit for full work. Anything wrong = a 0. I was practically self teaching from multiple places since he was no help.
Exhausting and inflexible. I went in looking forward to the class and just ended up miserable. Not helpful or very communicative in emails, takes points off of assignments as he pleases. No class is worth chipping away at my mental state. Best wishes.
I HATED this professor. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Read all of the other ratings and you'll understand. It's no wonder why the most rated number is a 0.
I am following every piece of detail in his pdf notes and when it comes down to quizzes, yet SOMEHOW AND SOMEWAY he takes off points because I'm not doing it the way HE wants it done. I mean COME ON. At least give me some credit of how I'M doing it. Also, when studying, some of the stuff on the exams aren't even in the pdf notes and/or textbook.
used different problems on tests with different ways of solving from his notes. I used all of my tutoring hours to pass and i still had to drop with like a 40%. apparently the way the tutors were helping me solve the problems wasnt the way he wanted. Do not take him. I took online. If you HAVE to take him I would try in person that might be better.
Wow. Just Wow. Thats all I have to say
Kern is the undisputed champion when it comes to taking points off work. I haven't learned much from taking this course, as it's a struggle just to survive the convoluted and unclear grading methods of Kern. Taking this class has been demoralizing and unsatisfying. Please avoid this professor.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had in my life, AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COST!!!! DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES!!!
Sometimes petty points, he's a hard teacher to communicate with online. For assessments, be VERY detailed. What I did to get a C: look at his pdf and take notes, then look at his videos(IMPORTANT), then I look at youtube. Just use as many resources if you know what I mean because you will need them. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND MANIFEST SUCCESS.
If you ever considered taking this course over the summer, don't. Unless you're prepared to sacrifice each and every day of those 6 weeks completely immersed in math, you will fail. It took nothing short of a miracle for me to pass this course, and I wouldn't take your chances hoping for the same. Nice guy, but an extremely challenging course.
This class would have been ten times easier at the top public university I attend. However, I feel more than prepared for Calc 3 with the C I received. Genuinely spent hours just staring at the problems trying to figure out where to start. There is no reason why this class should be this hard at a community college...
Can't believe how cruel someone can be with grading. It's like he is challenging himself to find as many petty non-important things to take off points for. You can show ALL of your work and get the answer completely correct and he will find a way to take off a significant amount of points anyway. FYI, a typical quiz class avg score is 45% or less.
Does not hold back when taking off points...
It is nearly impossible to get more than a C with this guy. God help you if you are in his class.
this is the worst professor for ever If u try take with him just run. He takes point form your quiz and the exam and u will not know why maybe he challenge him self. Also, his class start with 25 people and the half of the semester we just 8 people it is not make senence. Also if u try to speak to the Dean u will not get any help.
This professor he just challenge himself. He was happy when he takes points off from each exam and quiz that mean the end of the semester you will get D or F. This problem not just for me but the whole class just withdraw from him at the end.
So far the worst professor I have ever had in my life. He does not want his students to succeed. He takes a lot of points off for nothing. Even when you show all your work and get the correct answer, he still takes a lot point off. You will struggle and study hard and you will not pass his class. DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.
If you have plans to graduate, I would avoid Prof. Kern. If you consider yourself good at calculus, think again. This class was basically "How does Kern think 101", because that's the knowledge you need to pass the class. It was less about the calculus concepts and more about how EXCACTLY he wanted you to go about everything lest you fail.
Tried to like Prof Kern but jeez. Rude when I emailed him for help. Extremely tough grader, not forgiving at all. Will take points off for EVERYTHING. Tests are the ONLY graded assignments. Some timed, some not. Started with 20+ students and ended with 6. Usually good at math, finished with a C. Not worth it imo, take a section w a different prof
His grading system is the worst, only want to grade his way, even if you do everything right if its not exactly the way he taught it... points off!. Absolutely terrible, worst teacher barely teach you anything and just run through the problems and expects you to know a full section in one course. Just do not take him wish I was told
I don't believe calculus has to be so unpleasant. I passed Calculus I with a B. Mr. Kern's Calculus II class has nearly brought me to tears... I'm not a crier by any means. He selects some of the hardest, most obscure problems to test your knowledge of new concepts. In so few words, I can only say: DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Only at week 2 of 15...
Kern was the absolute worst professor I've ever taken. His lectures and the homework are the equivalent of teaching you to walk, then his tests are the equivalent of shoving you into a marathon and expecting you to get first place. I emailed him to ask for help and got no response. I'd rather learn from the book than wasting my money on this guy.
This is the WORST professor. He doesn't want you to learn, all he wants is to give you anxiety and makes you feel bad about yourself. His grades make no sense!!!! and if you tried to talk with him about the grades you'll get the weirdest answers. PLEASE DON'T TAKE HIM
DO NOT TAKE RICHARD KERN, HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR YOU WILL EVER HAVE! I don't even know where to begin, What he teaches in class is the basics of what you will be tested on, only half the test will correspond with what was taught in class. Also is very rude & will accuse you of cheating & not paying attention, if you don't solve it his way.
The worst professor I've had to date. Professor Kern expects you to read him mind and do work exactly as he would do it. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I had the highest score in my class and I withdrew because I was sick of Kern's subjective grading.
ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. This professor is the most subjective grader I have ever seen. You can do everything right, but if you put arrows or anything that is not to his liking or how he does his math, then points off. You do not learn Precalculus in this class, you learn how to do math like Kern. I thought the same, how bad could it be? Trust me, NO.
The most picky grader I've ever seen. Nothing to do with the steps taken or the results achieved, and everything to do with whether you successfully appeased His Expectations on presentation. Reduced a fraction without showing exactly how? Believe it or not, straight to -1. Simplified a square root? That's right, -1.
What a semester with him he blows everything and I was so drain I can't even believe how this guy is still teaching at montco he should just retire at this point
The worst math professor I ever had it's so insane just fair warning don't take him I'm really good at math took him in the fall 2023 almost failed did a good comeback took mat 103 with a different professor good one and 104 in the summer with Winterbottom just avoid Richard Kern and Paul Winterbottom CAUSE THEY DON'T TEACH AT ALL!!!!!!!
Very tough on grading and the worst professor I ever had I drop him after my one test didn't do well but there was so many errors on the test and how he teaches you has to be the same as how he does it.
Absolutely avoid this teacher if you care about your grades at all. He does about 5-6 example problems in class for each sub-unit, and the rest has to be self-taught. Grading is so inconsistent, not understanding at all, and quizzes are significantly harder than any practice problems. I'm sure he's a great guy, but his class is from hell.
Prepare to struggle in Prof. Kern's Calculus II class. The tests are brutal, and he's a harsh grader - even perfect work can lose you points. Try using Unstuckstudy AI alongside the textbook to get through this tough course.
This guy cannot teach at all he's a nice guy but not good at teaching at all I would say just drop him as of now I'm barely passing his class and all the assignments I've done were perfect and was super harsh on grading it test have errors as well and very tough grader to I'm trying my best in this Precalculus class.
I really hate his videos, they take a long time to get to the point while not covering some topics that are present in the homework. That being said, the homework does thoroughly prepare you to move forward in mathematics, and I especially feel as though I retained concepts very well through this weekly HW and self-teaching on Youtube.
The way how he teaches is so outdated then the other professors like and his tutor is way worse he doesn't even explain on the problems he makes them so difficult to understand and would make you feel so slow stay away from kern you will literally have to teach MAT130 all by yourself.
I'm a straight A I decided to take his course but it did not end up well I understand this is an online course but you are 10000000% on your own he doesn't even help you at all and would just tell you to do it on your own which wasn't good ended up dropping him just a warning do not take him or else you would end up failing up or dropping him.
blows......
He blows and will drain all your energy for Mat125 don't take him at all this semester blows because of him.
Bro I swear this guy is so bad at teaching I can't even tell you at all he's like a 0/10 and don't even think about going to his tutor section too he won't help you at all and would ask you to explain in a sentence on how to solve it and not show work and he gets mad if you won't do it in his own way and will make fun of you I had to drop him 0/10!
Be prepare to struggle in Kern's Calculus 1 class the test are scary and so impossible to do I can't even do nothing would email him but never response to it so I do my own and would cheat in his class stay away from him please he's the worst.
No way I cannot tell you how bad kern is. His grading system is the worst I've ever seen and he's very picky on grading and if you try to explain on why it's wrong he will just say it in a random tone. And I went to a tutor section with kern spent 45 minutes telling me I was slow and not helping at all please stay away from this mans at all cost!!!
I'd rate his teach a 0/10 and his personal
Professor Kern, is the worst math professor ever at Montco his teaching is so much different and whenever you try to correct him he will say it in the weirdest way ever and will say that you're wrong and he's right he would also tell us to do everything on the calculator and would brag about it and you would have to write a sentence on the quiz no.
He can't teach at all his lectures are so bad , heavy, and they don't even give out the right problems all he does is put the videos on canvas and will show how to do the problem but won't give us the answer also for the quiz you would have to do it in paper send a picture to him before it's due if not you'll get a zero.
Took all the courses that he does and terrible very bad professor his teaching style is so weird and the test and quizzes are so different than the assignments he give us not to mention that he takes to long to solve a problem and would tell us to write it in a sentence or a paragraph waste of time and money avoid him.
Solid professor. His online teaching style isn't great. Read the chapter, watch a 15-20min video that he made, and thats it. You have to answer quiz and test questions in his style, otherwise you lose points. Forget to show how you factored something? Lose a point. Fortunately, he gives out the textbook for free.
Just don't take his class
Richard Kern is the worst professor I ever had he WANTS PROBLEM TO BE THE SAME ON HOW HE DOES IT IF NOT HE WILL TAKE LOTS OF POINTS OFF AND ACCUSED YOU OF CHEATING. wants us to show a lot of work and write a simple sentence to explain on how we show are work if not will get mad and say ur not doing it right. pass him with an A please avoid him.
I took the online course and would never take it again. His lack of communication when trying to contact him and every little thing made you lose points. Maybe he is better in person but online is not a good experience. I've had tough math teachers but he is just extreme.
Cmon it's not even the first week yet and this guy is about to make me drop the course today class he kept yapping about the course for 30 minutes and didn't show us the syllabus at all once that was over we did problems and before we continue on he yelled at someone for not paying attention this guy is so rude please in the future void him.
It was MAT106. Absolutely the worst, I don't know how he is a teacher.
DROP YOUR COURSE-DO NOT REGISTER. I say this with the utmost seriousness, this man has no business teaching. There is no point in trying, it will either mess up your GPA or your financial stuff when you inevitably drop his course. He is punitive and cold. He is confusing and demanding at the same time. It is miserable. Montco should be ashamed.
The guy can't teach at all of his lectures and the way he teaches are very outdated and he wants every problem to be the same as he shows his work he also tends to be aggressive to students as well, harsh grader as well with perfect work he still will take lots of points off as well not good and every week quiz which is so annoying 1/10 I rate him.
Have him for Precalc 2 and holy cow all of his lectures and how he teaches with video recorded are all outdated nothing with him is new at all and he wants everything to be the same on how he show us if not lots of points taken away every week quizzes and test will come out really quick but also I had to teach myself as well since he cant teach
Professor Kern was very nice but very stern. I can tell he is a very smart man and I learned plenty from his lectures. However, he gave us many quizzes and they were barely like the material he taught in class. I usually push through classes like these, but I didn't see my grade getting any better. He did get back to my emails right away though.
Syllabus says tests are based on the HW but that couldn't be further from the truth! Drop this class immediately. You can put in 20 hours of studying a week and see unknown things on the tests. how is he still employed while having overwhelmingly bad reviews since 2004? JUST DROP IT AND DONT LOOK BACK you will study countless hours just to fail.
Although his lectures will teach you a lot, he will test you on things not shown in the homework / lectures. Contrary to his syllabus saying they're “based on homework problems”
Dear Richard Kern I hope you see this that are you the WORST PROFESSOR I EVER HAD FOR MAT190 HOMEWORK SHOULD NOT BE HARD BUT WILL DOCK POINTS IF IT'S NOT HIS WAY the way how he teaches it so confusing test and quizzes ARENT EVEN THE SAME FROM NOTES AND HOMEWORK as well a bit rude but also a chill guy JUST NOT GOOD PROFESSOR SUPER TOUGH GRADER!!!!!!
This is the WORST 'professor' I've ever had in my life. If your work isn't exactly the way he does it, you will struggle! All quizzes and test must be printed and handwritten. 2 hours given on a 7 page exam. Extremely unhelpful comments. Took this class for credit, and it was the biggest waste of money. Rather give it to the homeless than this guy.
Overall, I did not enjoy Prof. Kern class at all. he does teach good overall but sadly he wants everything to be his way if not points off grading system is weird as well he would disable grades on canvas and once we done are test he wold let us see are grade and would disable it again. He teaches a bit outdated not good but still don't take him.
Prof kern lectures are very well and you will learn a lot but when it comes for quizzes and exams they are a different story and you could study at least 2 hours a day and not still manage to know what's on the exams he does reply to emails but you would have to get your work in on time he does not accept late work and he's tough on grading.
Had a tree fall on my house last night and I requested a 3 hour extension, due to extreme circumstances? And he said no. So I'm never taking his class again.
THIS IS THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!!! HE WANTS EVERYTHING TO BE HIS WAY OTHERWISE POINTS OFF GRADING IS AWFUL TAKES OF POINTS LOTS OF POINTS FOR SMALL MISTAKES HIS TEACHING STYLE IS FINE BUT HE JUST WANTS EVERYTHING HIS WAY NO ONE ELSE AND IS ALSO RUDE? I EMAIL HIM FOR HELP AND GIVE VERY RUDE FEEDBACK AND ALL QUIZ AND EXAMS PRINTED OUT PAPER WORST.
He takes off points for no reason, despite following the steps from his notes. He does not respond to questions posted in the Homework Discussion Page. His test questions are difficult. I do not recommend taking this professor.
Save yourself and don't take him at all cost
Awful professor only took him because there was no other option and I regret it. His lecture videos are fine; they explain things well. the problem is, literally nothing on his quizzes feels like it actually matches the lecture. I submitted quizzes and there would be mystery points off for no reason and poorly written notes that didn't make sense.
Genuinely the worst professor I've ever had, does not want you to succeed or do anything unless it's the way his brain works. Won't excuse any absences even if you had a valid reason to be there (example: A SURGERY). Will teach the class brand new material before giving you a test on the material from last week. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS AT ALL COST.
Easily the worst professor at Montco. He refuses any method except his own and marks correct answers wrong if you don't use it. Never posts grades so you have to calculate. Condescending and dismissive if you ask questions so it makes you not want to ask. Late work gets hardly any credit. Missing class leaves you behind. Avoid his class entirely.
