easy as long as you come to class and pay attention. he likes a lot of detail though
nice guy, tough exams...make sure you attend lectures
Very unclear, disorganized, bad lecturer.
He is very approachable and is always willing to help you if you have any questions. He does random reading checks in lecture (so you have to read and go to lecture). It is kind of hard to get an A...you really need to know your information.
Professor Kim is a great teacher. He provides wonderful insight to themes and topics discussed in class. The quizzes are easy, the writing assignments I must admit are quite challenging. As long as you keep up with the readings, you'll be fine.
Prof. Kim is the worst lecturer for ASA 2! His lectures are not only monotonous, but he always seems to be reading straight from the book. I thought this class would be lively & entertaining, but to my utter dismay, it was not the case!
Do not fall asleep in lecture or he will rag on you. Also, he does pop quizzes to encourage people to come to lecture (especially on fridays/popular cut days). I wish the course was a little faster; the material gets a little monotonous
There is tons of reading in this class. Lecutres are really boring but it's important to stay awake because it'll all show up on the final. Keep up with readings because there are occasional pop quizes.
Lecture sometimes gets a little dry, but cares about what he's teaching. I look forward to going to his class.
good teacher. lectures are clear and interesting. a few pop quizzes here and there but they are easy if u read. it's not hard to get an A. just go to class and read.
very helpful when going over readings

he is a great professor and is very clear in his lectures...he tries his best to make lecture and they are usually interesting just come days are boring...pop quizes here and there but they are easy..overall great prof.
Great professor, very easy to approach and very helpful outside of class. His class was very interesting although he does pick on you if he knows you well enough. Knows what he's talking about and seems passionate about it.
Great teacher! Very funny. Jokes around with students. Explains everthing in detail. Tries to help his students as much as possible.
Just go to lectures and pay attention. It's pretty much easy if you comprehend what he's talking about.
Go to lectures and read all the novels and assigned readings and you will do fine. Lectures are based off of the Chan book, and Prof. Kim does a very good job of covering that material so you don't even have to read it, assuming you go to all lectures.
He's really funny(but not much people understand it)and the materials are actually really interesting and emotional. Do all the reading and take good notes. Outlines help a LOT. He really cares about his class and is helpful if you just ask.
Be ready to take a lot of lecture notes. He's a really cool prof. Don't fall asleep in his class! Lectures are very important. Tests are fairly easy. Quizzes are very very easy. Great lecturer, uses overhead.
Intelligent, articulate, palpably sexy.
Prof Kim really cares about students. He's friendly and the class is interesting, just DO NOT SLEEP IN CLASS! ><
He's really funny. I suggest you read the novels, but you could skim the Chan book. He covers the Chan readings thoroughly and he makes the boring Chan readings sound interesting. There's GE writing credit, and the writing was easy if you attend lectures.
this was a very easy class. all you need to do is read the required reading and you should be able to get an A. i strongly recommend this class.
Richard Kim is a cool easy going guy, his lectures are interesting and entertaining. He knows how to relate to his students well, and encourages them to form their own outlook on vital issues facing Asian Americans and define their own experience.
Good prof. just don't get on his bad side by sleeping in class b/c he will ****. overall, he's pretty laid back and a cool guy once you know him. come prepared and you'll be fine.
hes pretty funny i must say even though i wasnt really into the whole asian american history stuff. his quizes are very easy and not to mention fun at times. just dont sleep in his class or else he'll embarass you!
He likes to say "SHIT" a lot...funny
he knows his stuff. his class gives you a great package of asian am history. very funny and sometimes scary-only to those who dare sleep or talk while he is lecturing!
what a panda bear... I learned so much. He made difficult concepts so easy. i felt so smart in his class. and he is so committed.
Professor Kim is a great teacher. However if you get stuck with STELLA LEE as ur TA, switch to a different sections. She does not prepare helpful discussions and favors people.
Profressor Kim was an awesome teacher! I highly recommend his class to anyone interested in Asian American studies, his nonchalant, and sometimesjoking approach to a lot of the material kept it interesting and kept us wanting to learn more. Great class, great professor Can't get any better than that

very cool prof. younger than most profs., so he can relate to the class a little more. very serious about the class and wants you to be too! may seem imtimitating but very easy going. loved his class! his exams are derrived from his lectures, pay attention!
Prof. Kim is a GREAT professor. He really knows his material and is very funny in class. His humor really helps to make the class interesting. Also, if you ask for help on your paper, he is very willing to read it over, and help you get an A. I highly recommend him!
Hey Winnie is hella hot! what are u talking about?!!! Prof.Kim is a coo professor.
great prof, he explains the material in an interesting way. he's funny too. just go to lecture (pay attention and take good notes!!!) and skim over some of the books, it's not necessary to read all of them at all. very fair in exams, he basically gives you the whole midterm or final w/ study guide.
LIKE OMG, THIS CLASS IS SOOOOOO COOL WITH A CAPITAL C. TOTALLY ROCKS MY WORLD, TOTALLY. CLASS IS FUN BUT HE DOESNT LIKE PEOPLE FALLING ASLEEP IN HIS LECTURE, LIKE, I GUESS THATS RUDE OR SOMETHING. HE GIVES OUT POP QUIZZES EVERY WEEK, BUT LIKE, THEY'RE TOTALLY EASY, LIKE OMG!
This is his Korean American Experience class, he was pretty cool, I could do without his potty mouth and his smart a** comments, but overall professor Kim is pretty cool. He takes time out if you need to talk to him and he is very good with lecturing, I don't seem to fall asleep
coolest professor i have ever meet....easy class if you go to class and take notes...midterm and final are easy b/c he gives you the midterm/finals to study ahead....just don't have asleep in his class...he hates it...good GE class!
Easy class, lectures cover a lot, but reading helps as well. Pop quizes are on reading, and thats 10% of grade, so you might as well read. dont fall alseep, he'll blast you on it. Otherwise, easy class, easy GE, relatively easy A. Gives exam questions in advance, sorta.
super funny... very nice... go to lecture b/c he talks about most of the readings. pop quizes are reading checks... but very easy if you do the assigned hw. very interesting material covered well by him. just don't fall asleep (he will wake you up!)
watch out for the TA Kella Svetich, she is a monster who grades like none other TA. I took ASA 2 and got a 99%. I took ASA 1 with professor KIm and got an 84%. ASA 1 and 2 are the exact same class and go through the exact same midterm format. Make sure u get a good TA

Prof Kim is very cool, funny. good lectures, definitely do the readings b/c he does pop quizes. no sleeping in class!!
Must pay attention in class or else! Overall learned a lot. Readings interesting.
makes a big deal about people that are a little bit late to class. trys to embarass people that sleep in his lectures. he's funny though. some of the reading is really dense and boring, but most of the readings are actually quite interesting. discussions are funner then his lectures although the TA grades kinda harsh. know how to write to pass.
I had him for ASA1, 150D and 189A and he is amazing!!!
Prof. Kim will speed through his lecture, somewhat, so learn to dictate for his lectures. Be warned: you will spend DAYS doing the reading; on the upside, it's at least interesting reading, for the most part. The tests are almost completely short answer/essay based on the reading, so it REALLY helps to study up. Other than that, it's not that bad.
Overall decent professor. Important to go to class, and section is mandatory. A lot of reading to do in this class, but keep up and you should do fine. I wish the professor posted more elaborate outlines online ):
Prof Kim is cool, but fell asleep a few times. Wish lecture outlines were more organized. Gives quizzes, 5-7 total I think, and they're super easy as long as you've read. 1 midterm, 2 essays, and the final. Essay topics seem hard, but not so bad once you start writing. Need 5 books for this class. Discussion mandatory, but not very helpful
Professor Kim is a cool teacher. His class is just a lot of note taking. Talks a bit fast. He gives out 5-8 short easy pop quizzes based on your readings for the class. 2 simple papers for the course and the midterm and final are based off a study guide he gives you. Professor Kim is a very good teacher and has a good sense of humor.
A very good sense of humor; pop quizzes are given but ridiculously easy for a free 10% of your grade. Just go over the study guide he gives you before the test and you will get a good grade in the class.
Cool Professor, cool class. Midterm study guide is really helpful. Always gives at least one freebie in every quiz. Great class for gpa booster. Not a good idea to sleep in class.
Such a FUNNY Professor. He talks really FAST so pay ATTENTION. LECTURE is more important than the readings.Always let us out early which is AWESOME! I think he cares about the students' opinions b/c he said he read the comments for Ratemyprofessor.com (LOL he's probably reading my comment right now).
Prof Kim is actually a good lecturer; he was entertaining, yet he was very serious about his class. He practically gives you the midterm and final before hand, so you shouldn't slack off. Even though he speaks pretty fast, he articulates the concepts clearly and thoughtfully. I recommend this class to people who needs a grade booster. Don't SLEEP!
Fast lecturer and goes through a lot of concepts per lecture. If this is your first ASA class, I recommend that you do the reading before lecture, which is required. Do not fall asleep in class or else you'll have bad notes to study from. He doesn't use lecture slides so be prepared to take good notes.
Worst Professor ever in my UCD years. I just spend 5 minutes sighing up for this website just to write this comment. I am surprised there are lots of positive comments here.
I love Prof. Kim because he was really serious about the class..and because he reminds me of my uncle. I would DEFINITELY recommend him for anyone taking ASA 001. Yes, it's a lot of reading, but the readings are not even that hard. TAs do most of the grading, so better hope for an easy TA. He's not as hard as many make him sound.
i took ASA 4 with Min prior to this and declared an ASA major. But after his class, I'm contemplating switching out. The TAs are awful in this department . Nothing on Kim, but the class is somewhat tedious because your grade depends on whether you have a good TA or not. I did not luck out.
Kim is a good lecturer, although things can get boring sometimes. He is very open-minded and kind. After taking this course, I plan to take more ASA courses.
This class consists of 2 papers, a midterm, and a final. The TAs graded the first paper super hard, but were much more lenient on the second. Midterm and final are really easy. Professor Kim is very clear during lecture. I recommend taking notes on your laptop instead of writing them down because he talks really fast!
There's a lot of readings to do, but if you read them all and attend all lectures and sections, it's not that hard to get an A. Beware of bad TAs though, because it's an asian-american class the TAs might seem a little anti-white, just take section with a grain of salt
He is a overall good lecturer. Take his class! You won't regret.
I honestly love his class! Its pretty easy, yes there are a lot of readings but they are interesting and he goes over some of them in class. Exams are straight forward if you pay attention. Wish he taught more classes!
First day of class then dropped out. Discussion heavy, heavy reading, expect to write 3-4 pages of reflection papers. BEWARE
Super insightful lectures! If you're interested in ASA at all, this class is extremely thought-provoking! There is definitely a good amount of readings & analysis involved with the course, but I enjoyed it.
Prof. Kim is strict on his class discipline. He will ask you to stop talking with your friends if he thinks you distracts him. He is a tough grader on your papers but TAs will often give a higher score to balance it out. He is very serious on the material and actually care for the students. He is very strict but caring for students as well.
Solid lecturer, would definitely take another class with him. Lots of readings to do, so just prioritize your time. Ask questions, he likes that.
I loved professor kim! Not only does he care about the subject matter, but it's always amazing to learn from a professor who is passionate about what he teaches. Very kind. Graded by 2 papers, 1 midterm, discussion + final. A lot of reading but not hard to understand. Ended the quarter appreciating my cultural roots + history than before :)
He has no tact. When questioning him, he gets very defensive and is ready to attack you left and right. Very unprofessional. Very obscure grader and mediocre at best.
Prof Kim is an amazing lecturer! As long as you show up and take notes, and keep up with the readings you should do fine. His exams are very fair, no trick questions. The essays are not bad at all, especially with the TAs and Prof Kim being so willing to help. Would definitely recommend taking ASA with him!
I really loved this class and his lectures. There's a lot of reading but I just skimmed them and read in depth for the readings I used for the papers, so it's doable. Papers were the toughest part for me but there's help available from TA's and Professor Kim. Discussion participation is worth a lot so be ready to participate
Prof. Kim decided to make it so that the only way to view his lectures was to see them live. If you are an international student do not take this class due to time zone problems. If you are a domestic student still avoid him because his refusal to upload is a clear sign of being an egomaniac who demands your presence to pad his fragile educator ego
Kim's lectures are not mandatory. Most ASA classes, if not most classes at Davis, are synchronous and mandatory. I suggest emailing a professor before you take their class to see if their class is mandatory or not. Kim is very caring and understandable and will grant an extension if you need one, whether it's mental health-related or COVID related.
No midterms, only short writing assignments, and one final paper. Drops two journal entries. It is not required to have your camera on. The professor would listen to the students if they wanted something due at a certain time. Easy to reach outside of class.
He offers feedback on journal entries and short writing assignments. I dont know why I took this class, I hate writing essays. Also dont take him if youre in a different country but if youre east coast youre chilling. Idk why he made it mandatory to attend class but I just had my camera off and slept. Glad its finally over good freaking bye
Professor Kim's online class was a bit rough for the newly transitioned course to be online. It was a bit unorganized, but the overall lectures and assignments were conveyed well. I recommend participating in discussions to further understand the countless reading that you will be doing! The course was not necessarily hard, but definitely keep up!
Kim excels at teaching the subject matter in an efficient, yet introspective manner, making him pretty inspirational. He is also extremely understanding of other student's circumstances, especially considering 2020. Ask, and you shall receive. While quite serious most of the time, he's got rare moments of humor that nobody sees coming. real legend.
My TA was a rather tough grader but Dr. Kim seems chill. Lectures were live and recordings not provided unless requested. We read 3 books + 300 pages of historical sources. Sections counted for 45% of our grade. Very interesting and important materials. An insightful class. Dr. Kim has a sense of humor and passion that makes lectures engaging.
2 essays, a group project based on a LOT of assigned readings, two short writing assignments, and two multiple choice exams. The concepts of the class are cool to learn coming from an Asian background but for a GE idk why I lowkey had to sweat as much as I did. If ur taking this as a stem major plz pick something else u will not have a good time
Way too much work and dedication required if you're taking this as a GE... Kim himself is a great professor and knowledgeable but the 45% participation grade in mandatory discussions plus the 2 papers and countless readings you need to do made this class more burdensome than I thought it would be. Basically, do not take if you're a STEM major.
He's kinda intimidating but funny/passionate. LOT of readings (+ two 4-5 pg essays and 2 short writing assignments), but exams were MCQ only. Definitely have to put some effort in the class, but topic was interesting. Lectures were pretty clear. Disc was 30% of grade but my TA was nice so most people got 100% (just had a simple group presentation).
Professor Kim is a good professor and is an engaging lecturer. The class did require a lot of reading and writing throughout the quarter but the TAs were extremely kind and understanding making it not too difficult to achieve good grades if you understood the material. There are two papers, one midterm, one final, discussion section is mandatory.
He's friendly and pretty approachable (esp bc small class). There's a lot of readings (that are sometimes difficult to understand), but he breaks them down in class. Sometimes discussions got too abstract for me, but overall I enjoyed the class and its content. Weekly journals (lowest 2 dropped), 2 short writing, take home final essay.
Prof. Kim's lectures were very easy to understand, and he explains the readings from the course pack in his lectures as well! Highly recommend taking notes on his lecture slides as it will come in handy as a study guide for the multiple-choice exams. He gives extensions on papers depending on the circumstance and is overall very accommodating.
Graded by midterm, two essays, final, and discussions. Midterm and final are fairly easy but you're not going to get an A on them unless you study. All papers are graded by TAs but are brought to professor and other TAs to make sure grading is fair. Funny professor, just pay attention or he'll call you out.
Professor Kim is an amazing lecturer, he is very nice and humorous from time to time. Lecture isn't recorded and discussion is mandatory. 2 essays, 2 short writing assignment, 1 final and midterm. Easy to get behind all the readings because there's so much. TA's were very kind though. Don't take this class if you're a stem major lol.
Dr. Kim was an amazing professor and kept lectures interesting and easy to follow along. As long as you study the study guide well and dedicate a good amount of time writing your essay, you can get an A. There were two exams and two essays. The TAs were also amazing.
Kim is alright but passionate about ASA. Class itself was boring, 2 hr lectures twice a week with required attendance. Weekly journal entry, pop quizzes, and a final paper. Readings before class were a pain bc they were so long. Kinda unclear how he grades and sometimes it's like he just gives you a random number based how he feels that day
My favorite professor at UC Davis! The importance of his classes and what he teaches goes way beyond just academia. This man changed my whole outlook on life. 10/10.
Absolutely don't take this class if you're looking for an engaging "easy" GE. Riduculous amount of reading, multiple essays, midterms, and final. Mandatory discussion w/ no lecture recordings. Went into the final week having no semblance of our final grade with an in-person final on Wednesday and a Final Essay due Thursday at 6pm. Get it together.
The class is a lot for a GE, but if you treat it like a regular 4 unit class, it is doable. Skim the readings, show up to lectures, review the key terms, and you will do just fine on tests. Lectures aren't uploaded, but Professor Kim is understanding and will make accommodations as necessary. Would recommend if interested in class content!
he is a mean professor
