Dont attend class, it is pointless. Read book for clarification if need.Watch all lectures before tests. Take good notes on lectures and MEMORIZE EVERYTHING ON HIS SLIDES LITERALLY. I GUARANTEE YOU WILl MAKE AN A! =]
He was an okay teacher, it's just that his tests were really tricky, you have to read the questions very carefully. Gives curves based on the class average and has bonus quizzes, which only give like 4 pts in the end. No one really fails though. Go through the notes before tests and read questions on the test carefully and you'll be fine.
Fantastic professor. He was extremely helpful in making the class as convenient as possible. Online lectures = awesomeness. Very laid-back, open to questions, and good lectures notes. He even gives extra credit..you don't see that in the CHEM department.
Class was fairly easy. Attendance not mandatory. His online lectures are great. This class is a easy A if you just study the power points!
If you do not like biology, this class is not easy!! Thank goodness he curves every test and the final grades. Knapp sincerely wants all to do well in his class. He is very smart and sometimes loses students when in discussion. He mumbles alot too. All lectures are online so there is no need to go to class.
Good professor. Tests are not hard at all. He offers extra credit in the form of 4 quizzes which add 4 points to your final grade. He posts his lectures online so attendence is not mandatory. He has additional resources online which help a lot. I read the book but it doesn't make too much of a difference if you dont read it.
I took Dr. Knapp for both semesters of biology. I found him to be a terrific teacher during his one-on-one office hours. Even though I went to every single lecture, I had trouble paying attention and avoiding sleep. :) If you don't understand the lecture notes, ask him! Extremely helpful, he wants you to succeed!
I did NOT enjoy this class. I'm not very interested in biology, so I'm sure that didn't help. He takes attendance for 10% of your grade, and his lectures are hard to listen to, due to mumbling. The only way I did well in this class was through self-teaching and the curve from the tests.
Professor Knapp has a monotone voice so it's very easy to fall asleep in his lectures. His class is easy if you put effort in studying the book yourself.
He makes no sense at all. The dude mumbles to himself and you cannot understand anything he says, the tests are hard, notes make no sense, he never answers emails, etc. I feel bad for him because he seems like a nice PERSON but is a bad TEACHER,so unless you are like a biology genious do not take this class because you will teach yourself
Don't know what to say , Class is not eassy, but problem is his test, really hard and tricky. most of the time fall sleep in his class, have final next week, Faid most of the test don;t know if I am able to past the class , if I did will come and let you know I mad it .
The only good thing i can say is that hes helpful if u go to his office hours. He mumbles thru lecture. His tests are RIDICULOUSLY hard. And I can't stress enough how BORING he is. VERY monotone. I tried my hardest not to go to sleep (i would take a nap before class) but its IMPOSSIBLE (sitting in the front doesnt help). Nice guy but dont take him.
i took Dr. Knapp for both bio classes and it was ok. in order to do well on the tests is to study the notes and use the "questions to think about" because it helps alot. four tests-90%, clicker questions-10% and four xtra credit quizzes which are easy. the book isnt needed just the printouts
Exams are insanely hard and tricky!!! You really have to be an expert on the material to do well. I studied hard for every test and made C's on all of them. Good luck if you take his class.
I thought he was ok, manged to get a B in the class, his exams are tricky! BE CAREFUL. However, I was extremely sick during two exams, didn't do too well, that was my fault though! Don't underestimate his exams, study hard! ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND the material, do NOT just memorize. Go to class, attendance is required!
Dr. Knapp is awesome.Yes this class is hard, but its preparation for med school, pharmacy school etc. It helps to study the notes more than the book. I listened to the lectures on my iPod which was pretty neat. No one said Biology would be a barrel full of monkey, but Knapp makes it less dreadful.
Easy A. Dont have to buy a book; just print out his powerpoint and study it OVER AND OVER. He curve on every exam. All lectures are recorded and can be downloaded from Vnet. I made an A by just study 2 days before each exam.
90% of grade comes from 4 tests(including non-cumulative Final). 4 optional Xtra credit quizzes @ CASA. 10% from clicker questions. His powerpoints should be your main focus but it doesnt hurt 2 have the textbook 4 detail. Try and attend class, his lectures are boring but when I consistently went I did well on the test. Tricky test questions though
Great Professor, his lectures are clear. There isn't any homework except for you to study. 4 exams all curved and 4 optional exams that can give you 4% on final. Exams come straight from Book and Powerpoint. Lectures are recorded, if you go to his office hours he will do his best to help you understand something. If you read your book you'll pass
Going to class is a waste of time. I only went because of the clicker. Even though I did poorly in this class, it's cause I didn't study. If you study well before the test, you'll be fine. He gives major curves anyway. Don't need to buy the book. it's hard to pay attention to him in class, but listening to his lecture online is super helpful
VERY boring. I barely ever go to class. The test questions are VERY detailed. That's what makes it so hard. You have to study every single detail to get a good grade. HE does put the lectures online, but that's like 8 hrs for each teest. Dosen't help you that much before a test. He's nice and helpful. I would say take it at HCC. It's just so much.
Dr. Knapp is a good professor. Figure out early in the semester how to stay awake in class though b/c he has a monotone voice. If you ever need help w/ a concept, he is very down to earth and approachable. I would recommend him any day. Attend lecture and don't neglect reading your book!
Umm..Dr. Knapp is a pretty decent teacher. Tries to give alot of curves and extra credit. All video uploaded. Out of all the teachers @ UH..he's the best. Take anyone else, you're screwed... =]
Worst prof ever. His tesat are VERY hard and he dosen't know how to teach. Bring two pillows to class. Your pillow will need a pillow too! Very boring lectures, just hard to even stay awake. The class average on the test was in the mid 60's. He had to give a huge curve. He bumped it up by one grade. That's an average of C in tis class. That's bad.
His tests were insanely HARD! The avergae on the tests was 60 for the entire class. You must sit in the very front to understand him. I can't believe this class was so hard. Damnit, it is INTRO bio!He had to give major curves or all 500 students would have failed. I have to take him again, but I would NOT recommend him at all.
Great class. Complainers are those same kids who don't attend/sleep during class, don't read book, don't prep for class, don't review after class, & try to cram for exams. What do you expect? Me & my gang were hitting 100+ on every exam because that's how we roll...Kids: go to class, study every day, prepare for the exam for a couple of days!
Great Teacher...he gives you everything you need to succeed. All lectures are online. To succeed all you have to do is read the book, go to class, and download/watch his lectures.
Never paid attention in class but made an A- by just watching the video lecture and looking over the lecture notes before the tests. Would've made an A if I had done that on my first two tests. Only studied for about three-four days before the test. Possible to get a 70 or higher on the extra credit quizzes by just reading the lecture notes.
Dr. Knapp's lectures are boring with his monotone voice. I'm not a lazy student (made A in his class) but his voice put me to sleep. I had to filter him out while reading the materials to stay awake in class. I watched his recorded lectures so I could pause when I started to feel sleepy. Detailed and tricky test questions but he didn't admit it.
Dr. Knapp's voice puts you to sleep. That said, make sure to read the book while following through his "questions to think about", and study the lecture notes before the quizzes = easy extra point. Go to office hours if you don't understand something. Test questions can be tricky, so know the material well.
Professor Knapp was a great professor! although his lectures were somewhat boring, he does provide HUGE curves! I managed to make a B on every exam with minimal studying, so take him!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Knapp isn't a horrible teacher, he's just got a monotone voice. I barely went to class (only for clicker grades) and I'm still pulling an A. All I studied were the notes and sometimes read a bit of my book if I didn't understand the notes before the test and that's all you need.
Very difficult ruins gpa
Lectures are boring but the textbook and lecture notes will get you through the class with a good grade. I did well by using most everything he posted online.
man he is so damn hard. ruins med school chances
This teacher sucks. The average grade on the tests was a D. Many people only passed because of the clickers and the quizzes. Signed up fog his summer class ( only teacher ) and now he said he won't have any more clickers and quizzes. Will not take the class with him again now, ever!Stay away from him!
He is good biology professor. Just listen to his lecture and read over the powerpoints and you will definitely make an A.
very damn hard. he is strict and has a attitude. everybody gets c and ds
Dr. Knapp was a good professor. Biology is a lot of information so of course you need to do your own studying. He provided his students with many helpful notes and more online and always offered his office hours for more help.
I am truly surprised to see students complaining about Dr. Knapp's courses. In my opinion, not only was he one of the best professors I've ever had, but his course was extraordinarily easy. Due to the numerous extra credit questions given on exams, I scored 100+ on every exam and finished with a 100+ in the course. This course is a very easy A.
I took him for Bio 1321 during the summer, It was an easy class! Four tests and he had extra credit questions at the end! Everything that was on the review was on his test, so just know your review.
His PowerPoint?s are GREAT, study those and you should have an easy A, it?s a lot of material still (this is biology what did you expect). Extra cred questions at the end of the lecture, so make sure you go. He?s a bit monotonous sometimes but he will answer questions. Go through his online material, he has a lot of guides that should help you.
Tests are semi easy. You should attend the lectures, but if not, he records them so you can always watch them later. Uses clicker but you can give it to a friend to do it for you if u cant attend class. Make sure you go to the review sessions. Not hard at all.
The class itself is boring and his monotone mumbling doesn't help. Needless to say, I never went to class (gave clicker to friendss) and I still made an A because I memorized the lecture notes. The exams come directly from those so if you read them 3-4x you should be fine. Questions are tricky make sure you check your answers.
Uhh.. Okay well I'm taking him right now. Very helpful professor, and explains concepts thoroughly. Even records lectures, so you can listen to them whenever you'd like. Only problem is his monotone voice. It makes class very boring. I understand its Bio but still. Sometimes I wonder if He even likes Biology, or likes teaching?
HORRIBLE I NEVER PASSED A SINGLE TEST!!! HE MADE ME CHANGE MY MAJOR!!! if your super smart you can pass, but if your just normal then dont ever take him. The other teacher gives extra credit and you can get a higher grade for sure. Tests are at casa and the other teachers test are in her room and curved
1st semester I went to every class & made an A. All i studied was his notes. He is good about answer questions and literally, drawing out things when you didn't understand them. He does give extra credit. Attendance isn't mandatory but clicker questions do figure into your grade. 2nd semester went to 2 classes and watched online lecture; made a B.
Super nice guy, didn't use clickers when I had him THEREFORE I never went to class cause his monotone voice is awful :) Just watch his recorded lectures online, pause, rewind, and take notes. His test questions come entirely from his slides (dont read the book) or last semester's test. Make friends with older people ;)
Just watch his lectures, and study his slides. Very helpful professor. Not very hard at all. Don't buy the book. It will be a waste of your money. For some reason he reminds me of that guy on House.
If you're a premed student, this better be a refresher course. Tips to make an A-- 1)Attend lectures 2)Read chapters in the book 3)Ask questions during lecture 4)Attend office hours 5)Take the extra credit quizzes 6)Attend exam review sessions. Ppl this class has ridiculous amount of curves, especially with Unit 2 exam its hardest. Dont stress out
Easiest course ever. never attended the lectures, just watched the lecture videos 2 days before the test, read over the slides and aced it. Got an A and A- in Bio 1 and 2. People say hes boring but thats not true. Maybe if u listen to him in class but his videos are actually interesting. Looking forward to taking him for Micro
Excellent professor! Highly organized; everything you need is online. I found reading the book invaluable. Read the chapter first, then listen to his lecture. Learn the concepts instead of memorizing. Exams challenging, first 2 more difficult than last 2. All exams and final grade curved. I read the book, watched his videos, made an A.
How I got an A, its not that hard: 1)ALWAYS read his powerpoints 2-3 days before the test. Thats all I did. But you should also try watching his Lectures he posts online (the same lecture he does in class).NO need to attend class.NO need to buy a textbook, trust me, save your money,I didnt even open up a page. Lots of chances for extracredit/curves.
DONT BUY THE BOOK,TRUST ME YOU DONT NEED ANY OF IT, PRINT OR READ HIS PPTS, READ 3-4 TIMES LEADING UP TO THE DAY OF THE TEST AND YOU'LL BE FINE! I GOT AN A, WITHOUT TROUBLE, LOVED THIS CLASS, VERY HELPFUL PROF AND ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP, AND CURVES ARE VERY HELPFUL, AND THERE IS ALSO EXTRA CREDIT! I AM TAKING HIM AGAIN FOR BIOL 1362
i took this class and it was very easy, but do not let this make you slack! you have to study for this class in order to make an A! DO NOT BUY TEXTBOOK. just go over ppt slides and understand everything and you will be fine! and try getting good grades on the extra cred quizzes you wont regret it! but just study at least 3 days before thoroughly!
Prof can be very boring but the class is easy. No need to attend class. Just listen to his lectures on your own time. Take the extra credit quizzes. His curves after tests really help. I'd take him again
I took him for Biology 1336 and it was terrible. I studied the most for his class and that ended up being the only one I failed... The mylab is very helpful because of the videos... I would not take him again ever!!!!
I don't know how you can be successful on exams by simply reading the lectures. To do well, you need to understand the concept, which cannot be done if you don't read the book. Exams are challenging and require focus. I found downloading lectures on iPhone helpful, listening to on the way to UH (commute). Make sure you do well on first exam.
It was hard for me to get a good grade in his class. He goes over notes on power points. But to really get a good grade in his class, you need to really understand the concept.
Nice teacher, but very boring, he will make you fall asleep. His recorded lectures are good, but still boring. You must read the book and study his powerpoints otherwise you will fail.
I just finished this class, got an A. It wasn't difficult BUT you must read the book and study to get a good grade. He puts lectures online so I always watched those & didn't really go to class. Gives extra credit in form of quizzes. Helpful study guides on vnet. Test 2 is the hardest. Knapp is a great professor!
I found watching videos he posted online and reading the lectures over and over again was more than sufficient enough to make an A without reading a single sentence from the textbook. Tests weren't too bad at all. Extra credit quizzes will help you prepare for the test if you take them seriously.
He made me absolutely HATE biology. His tests are horrific. He needs to quit teaching. All his test do is to demotivate students. Test average was usually a D. Go figure... I would avoid him at all cost. I now despise biology. Before that, I actually liked it. He dosen't understand not everybody is a med student or even a biology major. Horrible!
You have to in KNOW the material in depth in order to pass! Not memorize it, but be able to apply it in scenarios! His test were hard and have purposeful intentions to trick you. He is also very boring. Very hard to stay awake in class. I wouldn't recommend his class at all. I hated this class... I still love biology though!
I would recommend taking his class, he is very clear on what you need to know for the exams. The book is not that important because he gives you all the information you will need and more. I really enjoyed his class and found it interesting.
Rely on his slides, not the book. Very possible to make an A. He also gives extra credit questions on the exams. I passed the course with an average of over 100. However, I did study several hours for every test. Took him in the summer.
I do not have anything nice to say about him. Enjoys failing students and making their life miserable.
This professor is a NIGHTMARE. He gives a review, which tests hardly reflect. His tests are extremely tricky. Even after studying hours upon end (more than any other class i've studied for at UH) I failed all of his exams. Only good reviews on here are from BIO majors. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!!!!
I took it in the summer while working full-time. AMPLE study material provided on VNet and two review sessions, including a nighttime chat. Every lecture and all lecture notes provided online. I never attended class, watched the lectures the night before the exam, and scored 100 on every single one. I'm NOT a Bio major (Computer Science). EASY!
Very good teacher. Recorded lectures make attendance optional except on test days. Tests are straight forward (if you listen/attend lecture you'll do well) Never opened my textbook for anything, so I wouldn't recommend buying it.
DO NOT RELY ON THIS GOOD REVIEWS, he just posted by himself... 1st day was more than 200 in his class but after second test less than 50 people... the highest and best average that he ever got for the easiest test in his class was 60 :|
Good Professor. Boring because of his voice. I had him online and watched his lectures through powerpoint. His tests are based on his lectures so just listen and understand the concepts. People who did bad didn't try hard enough. I studied for my 1st test and got a 95. after that i got lazy and got 80's. my fault for slacking off. gives huge curves
How to pass this class: FOCUS. I went to lecture the first month and then gave up because i couldn't concentrate. He posts everything online so you don't have to go to class; if you do watch his stuff online...make sure you FOCUS. you can do well if you pay attention and email him with any questions. yes he is boring but an adequate teacher.
The people saying that the class is an "easy" A are liars. The test average is usually in the mid-60s for the first two and 70's for the last two. He does however curve the exams and then the final grade so you should be okay as long as you study.
Very Good professor. Yes his test are tricky. You can not just memorize, you have to truly learn the concepts. I scored 90 or above on all quizzes. Read book, watch lecture on vnet, study lecture notes in that order and you will do well.
This class was pretty boring, mainly because of his voice. I took the online class and after a while i stopped listening to his lectures and just read the textbook which helped a lot. Although Knapp knows what he's talking about, his lectures don't really reflect the tests. You really have to know the concepts to make a good grade.
Easiness: It comes down to whether or not if you studied. Listen to his lectures online and take notes, not hard to make an A.(I'm somewhat a math nerd, no prior knowledge in bio). Biol 1361 is for life science majors, take the lower lvl if you want an ez A.
Hes okay. Pretty hard teacher. test are hard. I dont recommend him if you dont have motivation because his test are hard with the average always around a high c to low d
I had never read the book for this class because I had taken BIOL 1361 with him and made a much higher score on the tests by listening and taking notes based off his lecture videos. Nonetheless, people have different ways to study, but I would say taking notes that aren't written on his given lecture notes is very useful.
The tests are very hard. I made A's in science throughout high school, and I only passed one of his tests. Because of the curve I received a D for the course. His lectures are very boring and he posts them online but you have to be motivated to watch them online.
I had no background of bio whatsoever. He's extremely boring. Lectures aren't mandatory but I would recommend them because sometimes, he lists examples that make it a little easier to understand. He curves tests and your final average. His quizzes aren't mandatory, but you should take them because they can HELP you with your final grade.
Okay teacher but would not take him if you care about your GPA. Goood thing is no attendance required curves grades but the bad point is tricky exams and the second microbiology exam is the hardest. Even he admits he cannot score more than 90 in his second exam. Take him at your own risk.
Knapp is the man, if you go to class, read the book before hand, and do the reviews it's an easy A. I fell asleep in class at times, but all lectures are online so it's all gravy. take him!
He is super hard and ruins gpa.... please do yourself a favor and dont take him
Take a nap in Knapp's class. Test are tricky.
Knapp is a cool professor. He teaches well but if you dont understand something, don't just forget about it and wing it on the test. Make sure to go ask him and understand. If you don't understand the material, you will not pass his tests. Tests are tricky. 4 tests throughout semester. No final. And extra credit quizzes. He gives great curves.
Bio 1361 and Bio 1362 are formatted the same but different materials. He teaches great in 1361 but if you dont understand any material he just taught, make sure you go ask him and understand. You cannot wing it on test, they are very tricky. Make sure to study.4 tests, no final, 4 extra credit quizzes. Book not mandatory or attendance. Great prof.
Dr. Knapp is a very smart man. I never went to class because his voice made me fall asleep, but thank god he puts all his lectures online. And he does in class videos to help better understand the material. Very helpful if you ask him questions, tests can be very tricky, but if you know your material, you should be fine.
Knapp is a VERY BAD professor to take for biology 1362. He only gives 4 exams! no homework, so your grade is just the exams. He's also inconsiderate by not dropping one test grade, like other instructors do. he never makes anything clear.or takes into consideration students setting/background. do not take him! Take vida! vida replaces a test grade!
His tests are all concept questions. He gives no extra credit besides a point for each quiz, which @ max is 4. Lectures are boring but notes are good. Says he curves tests but he really doesnt.
He gives alot of material on the slides he puts on vnet, his lectures are also very imformative BUT when it comes to the tests just read the book because only like 10% comes out of what he lectures. I was very dissapointed in this class. I recieved my first F in college and I am a senior! Don't tke him! a waist of money.
I warn you not to take Microbiology class with him. Don't look at any good comments below coz he visits this website and rates himself.Although I made a B+ the tests are very very tricky. If you dont understand lecture, you will fail. His classes are large and worthless because of his monotonous voice, you will feel sleepy.Good luck
Pretty easy teacher. Didn't go to class instead I just watched his lectures online. I read the chapters before each of his lectures and studied the slides extensively before each test. He also posts review video lectures for each of his tests (very helpful). Quizzes are super easy. Received an A.
great
He's a great teacher! I took him for BIO1 BIO2 and now Microbio, he is a fair grader, and he post tons of review stuff online to help you review for his exams. His lecture notes(and going to or listening to his lectures) are all you need for the test! If you don't make an A or B in this class then you are not putting in your part.
HE IS RIDICULOUS! This is a 1000 level class! He makes everything so difficult on his exams for no reason! His questions are tricky on purpose..when your class average is a failing grade it should be a sign that you are doing something WRONG.
LOVE HIM! So nice and a great teacher. Class is based on 4 tests plus 4 extra credit quizzes and an extra credit essay, AND he curves, there's no way you can fail. I got an A with moderate studying.
All you have to do is masteringmicro, listen to lectures, and do worksheets he gives you. Memorize and you will make an A. Im a C student and made an A with a little effort so theres no excuse for anyone not to do good. Just put in an hour every night.
I took him for both bio 1 & 2. I went to class for the first few days. All lectures were online so i stopped going. His tests were kinda similar to previous year's tests. Made a B in the class. I could not hear him in class coz he mumbled a lot. If u start studying a week ahead with all the materials provided in his website u will do fine.
Knapp is awesome. You don't have to attend class, just be sure to watch his lectures online. I'm pretty sure I'm sitting at around a A- in his class. Be sure to do the Masteringicrobiology, and read his notes, and you'll pass with flying colors. I'm taking him again in the spring. (:
Dr. Knapp is a great teacher. I had him for many biology courses. He explains things clearly and always answers emails promptly. Definitely one of the better teachers at UH.
Worst professor I've had at UH. Micro is ridiculously difficult. Whenever I went to ask him a question he made me feel stupid and uncomfortable. His class will put you to sleep. Exams are too tricky. Wish he would ease up.
I love Knapp. I took him for Micro last semester, now Bio2 and he's still just as amazing as ever. You never have to go to class because he posts everything online. He curves ALOT. Easy A if you study. I love himmmmm. Take himmmm.
Dr. Knapp is such a nice professor. He tries his best to help students and answers emails quickly. There are plenty of extra credit given. However, his tests are tricky and detailed so study hard.
Pretty easy class if you take the time to study. His tests can be tricky so really understand the material, don't just memorize. All of his material is online so class is optional but it helps if you use both.
Tests are extremely tricky. Not understanding at all and does not care about his students. You basically get what you get. He makes you feel intimidated and stupid when you ask him a question. Take another professor if you can.
He's so monotone. Great place to take a nap. :) Lectures are online but its still hard to sit and listen to everything he says.
his tests are SO TRICKy. studied for 14 hours for the last one and made a 79! made an A on the first & third, made a 73 on the 2nd. made an A-, but with the studying i did, i deserved an A+ it was extremely difficult and tricky, even if you memorize all the slides, you mighttmake a 79 like me -_- take an easier teacher if possible
tests are very tricky, u need to read the slides in DETAIL and watch the video lectures online to do well. The final wss hard, the lowest average all semister, also make sure you do well on the quizzes b/c they can make the difference in letter grades at the end.
Do not take him. He does not care about his students he just cares about his paycheck. I did not graduate because of him. I studied a great deal for this class and I still failed his tests. I just took the class at another college and made an A. So please take another professor he will just ruin your gpa. He should be fired.
Amazing teacher really how to teach very hard concept very well I learn so much in this class, His test are not that hard if you understands his lecture and pay attention you can easily make an A.
just took the test today and it was extremely tricky eventho I spent alot of time to study and still get a C
This guy really needs to take a class in public speaking. Insanely boring; very monotones. He doesn't even look like he likes microbio at all when he lectures. He's not entirely clear at all when he lectures. Test aren't too hard but VERY detailed and maybe a bit tricky. Unfortunately, he's the only person that teaches.
I love Dr. Knapp!! I took both his Bio 2 and Microbio classes.
Super boring class. Speaks in a monotone voice the entire time. Random clickers throughout semester so coming is a must. Posts lectures online. Tests are okay. Lots of studying on your own time since usually I doze off during lecture. Has a "fun run" sorta thing during the semester but no one usually attends. Maybe 4 or 5 show up. "Meh" class.
Dr. Knapp is a great professor! Sure, his lectures might be boring, but the material is interesting & his notes are exactly like the test. Know everything on the review sheets and you'll ace every test! Grading consists of in-class clicker quizzes, 4 online quizzes, and 4 exams. Take Dr. Knapp!
Be warned, you will get bored in class. I only attended the first day but he posts everything on BB and curves. I just went over the powerpoints and did well on the tests. Do the extra credit quizzes they'll help your grade. I did not even buy the book.
Never went to lecture cuz timings conflicting with traffic(commuter probs). You are kind of risking taking this as a online class since lecture quality isn't great. Overall, his tests are easy if you carefully pay attention to his lecture and memorize the slides. He is very generous. 4 bonus pts. from quizzes. Insane curve. Saw him in his undies lol
It's very hard to understand what he says. Mumbles way too much. Monotone and VERY boring. But he records everything and uploads it to BB so attendance is not mandatory. Gives EC. Tests were kind of tricky. Study his lectures/notes and old exams!! HUGE CURVE at the end of the semester.
teaches you only what you need to know for the test. Class is just as boring as everyone says, maybe more. Made a 70, 85, 80, and a 100 on the final. got 3 ec quizzes and made an A due to some next-level curve. Srsly, just take notes on his slides, do the chapter an ec quizzes, study old tests & use the book for just the sections he covers in class
This class requires alot of memorization and is not a blow off class. He changed up the format this semester though. There was a very generous curve since most students scored between 30-60 on his final. Study the power points, quizzes, the old tests he posts and the questions he asks in class. His wording on tests is a bit tricky so be careful.
Study his notes and go to class. you'll learn a lot from his lectures, but you will need coffee to stay awake. Not hard, but lots of memorization and an evil final got a 65 on the final, my lowest grade ever.
Boring lecture, quiz every week on BB, 3 exams at CASA. Exams are hard, clickers count, so make sure to come to class.
There's a ton of reading, but he video records his lectures so you can find them online. He'd stay after class and answer any questions clearly. Overall I really like him.
His class is boring and full of difficult information. And it doesn't help that he is monotone. His tests are very difficult and he gives no extra credit. This is one of the worst classes I took at UH. Attendance isn't mandatory but most exam material comes from things he mumbled somewhere in the lecture. Avoid taking this class at all costs!!!!
I do not recommend this professor at all. I enjoyed learning the material on my own because lectures are TOO (I repeat TOO) boring BUT sadly his test are HORRIBLE. I mean the material is not hard is just the way he words his test is confusing and tricky. DO NOT TAKE HIM, if you are a bio major take another elective.
I think Dr. knapp is underrated as a professor. people say he's boring and hard but I think is because his voice isn't loud enough and he mumbles so people cant understand him. Because if you rewatch the videos you can hear his voice and you will see that the content of his lectures is actually pretty good. Exams are only tough because of wording
I enjoyed this subject, and Knapp was a decent professor. Attendance is mandatory since he incorporated clickers into his lectures. However, his lectures can be boring since he's difficult to understand at times. You can hear and understand him a lot better if you watch the lectures he posts online. Tests are tough, so reallyy study the powerpoints
He's a very nice Professor. I had to go out of town during the middle of the semester for 2 weeks and between those two weeks was a test coming up so I just informed him and he rescheduled it for the day after I returned. He is monotoned though so its easy to fall asleep in his class. He counts attendance through clickers so go to class.
I really like Dr Knapp. He's very Down to earth and prompt in responding to students through email or helping them after class. He's also very accommodating if you have to Move an exam. His lectures are posted on bb and although hard to hear in class, they are thorough and loud on bb. He is passionate about the topic. Great guy overall
Test are tricky, so really study concepts. gives extra credit that is easy to do. 4 test, a final, mastering bio hw, and daily clickers. make sure you go to class, that's where test questions come from. can seem dull but is funny and makes the material easier to understand. drops lowest test. make sure you print out lectures slides before class.
Prof. Knapp is a cool, funny guy but really monotone so it's easy to fall asleep in class. There's a lot of masteringbio hw but it's helpful because some of the questions show up on the test. The tests are sometimes tricky but there is extra credit quizzes to help you out.
He is a good professor but his tests are really hard. I would go into CASA with confidence and take the test but then would check my grade and it would be under a 70. The exam 4 is online so it is a easy 100 but the final is the toughest. His lectures are boring.
Dr Knapp is a really nice professor but his exams are BRUTAL. If I could, I would take this class at community college because his exams really screw you over. Final is over 15 chapters and is cumulative and the hardest exam in the science department at UH
Dr. Knapp is a nice guy, he offers 3 exams and weekly quizzes, and attendance is mandatory through clicker grades. you need to answer the clickers correctly in order to earn full credit (which is not fair since these were for attendance) because they might pull your grade down and its the reason I'm ending up with a B+ :( . Good teacher overall.
I liked him for bio 2 so let me break it down. 4 midterms ( lowest one will be dropped and last midterm is online each counts for 15% of your final grade plus final for the same amount). Mastering bio 26% and 4% for 2 min paper plus extra credit so I would say yes take him. The distribution of grade is good so if you messed up one, don't panic.
Knapp isn't bad. Homework (Masteringbio) is 26% of your grade. attend class for clicker points (EC) Tests are 15% each (4) he drops the lowest of the first 4 tests. Test 4 is on Blackboard. Also there is a final worth 15% also. I got 100 on masteringbio--answers on google. 89 on test 1, 68 on test 2, 90 on test 4. 74 on final. Ended with A-
Overall, he's a decent professor. Can get boring during lectures.
Really easy class if you apply yourself. He does clickers for attendance, which only counts against your grade if you miss more than 3 classes. 2 quick in-class essay questions for credit at the end of the semester. Just study the powerpoints before exams and you will ace them. Lots of blackboard hw, but very doable with a group.
Dr. Knapp is a sweet guy who's lectures can often be stale. His tests and quizzes are not difficult, as long as you do the Mastering HW (Google answers help). I did not purchase the textbook, as it was not necessary. He records his lectures, so utilize that resource. Take the lecture with the lab to feel like a real Microbiologist.
Awesome professor and very interesting material. Read the text book and you'll make an A for sure.
I honestly do not know y he has bad reviews. amazing sweet professor. gives LOADS of extra credit(4+ points toward final grade)as long as u memorize slides,u should get an A. sure lectures are long but its not that bad. 8 quizes 4 tests, mandatory clickers. just memorize ppt slides down to the word and u are guaranteed to do well on tests. :)
Very easy class. Just memorize ppts (with the annotated slides) and you're good to go. Tests have bonus questions (which can be really helpful when you skip class a lot on days he does clickers). There was a 4pt easy extra credit assignment to your final grade as well.
Dr. Knapp's lectures are boring and he went too fast for me too take notes, but its all good because he puts the videos up online. Some questions from his old tests are on his tests.
Read the PowerPoints. He posts all of his powerpoints up before class and afterwards he'll post annotated ones. Do his review and use the textbook for stuff you don't understand and need more detail. Its not a hard class, and the tests aren't difficult if you study. Bring a clicker!
He is a great teacher but his exams are insane. I have about 20 questions marked wrong in my exams that are proving to be correct in the text book. Questions are not clear.
At the end of the semester, there were a lot of Bio students stressed about their grade, and then there were Knapp's students. Knapp WANTS you to do great in his class, and gives a a lot of extra credit. Also, 26% of your grade is homework that you can easily score 100% on, drastically improving your grade. Dont make the mistake and not take him!
One of the best professors in the science department. His lectures weren't that boring and he will not test you over topics not gone over in lecture. There is a decent amount of homework, but he has it to help your grade out in the end. Offers extra credit quizzes and clicker points. I would highly recommend this professor to others.
Don't know what all the complaints are for bc his exams are very straight forward. I went to class for first 2 months but stopped after I aced first 2 exams. His tests are straight from slides. The only downfall to missing class is attendance. Textbook clarified material but not necessary. Memorize everything on slides and you'll ace it.
People saying to memorize his slides are SO wrong. Obviously, for any science class u can't just memorize but u have to understand the way things work. He is nice but u cannot just memorize slides as they are only topics/subtopics he wants u to understand during the exams! The main thing are his exams, the choices are VERY weirdly phrased and tricky
Knapp can be a tad boring, but he posts lecture videos online where you can speed the lectures up. To prepare for tests, rewatch lectures and fill out the study guide and you should be good (takes about two days to prep per test). Clickers in class, so attend. 4 points are added to your final grade for easy extra credit at the end of the semester.
Beginning of the semester told the class that the class would be graded on a curve, at the end of the semester he denied it saying the curve wasn't necessary. Lectures are extremely boring because he goes on and on. He's helpful if you go to his office hours. Tests are really tough and weirdly worded. Offers extra credit
you have 4 exams (drops lowest one) and one final. last exam is online. use exams that are on various websites to practice since his exams are similar to those. attend class for clicker point since they're use for extra credit. and READ THE BOOK and you'll do amazing on the test. EASY A class. just put some effort into it.
Dr. Knapp's Class is ultra smooth. His notes provide guide to follow along in lecture. He also records his lectures which makes it very convenient to achieve explanations otherwise needed in person. His exams were multiple choice and completely FAIR IMO. Does give a slight curve which is great for students on the brink of cracking their potential.
If you go to class, you'll definitely pass with at least B. He records all his lectures, so you can always go online and rewatch them. VIEW THE ANNOTATED LECTURE BEFORE YOUR EXAMS AND YOU SHOULD BE GOOD TO GO. Gives clickers, and extra credit quizzes. Overall, highly recommend.
I made an A+ in this microbiology class. You do have to study a lot. And you do need to come to class because he posts clicker questions and concepts that are not in the powerpoint and will most likely show up on the exam. But all I did was study the powerpoints and come to class. I didn't read the textbook. Exams aren't too hard if you studied
By far the worst teacher ever do not take him. His test are hard and tricky. Poppers in class are even more annoying to do there is a min of 6 poppers for his class a day. It is worth 20 percent of your grade since it is counted as attendance as well. There is daily hw due each class. Did i mention test was hard. This is coming from a debakey stude
Prof. Knapp is a great professor. Even though I might not be able to get an A at the end of this course, but his class is definitely really interesting and super easy! Just make sure you don't sleep in his class then there is no way you can't get an A!
Figuring out what to study can be overwhelming at first but if you just memorize the powerpoint slides you are sure to get an A in this class.
He tends to repeat exam questions, so join different study groups to get his past questions and read his powerpoints, you should be fine.
Extra credit was given on clicker%, if you got 90% on clickers you got an additional 2.5pts to grade. In his syllabus he said he would curve at the end of the semester, but he didn't since our class average was high. His lectures are boring, & he post them online. However, attend because clickers are part of your grade.
Tests are worded really weirdly and he uses a test bank that has lots of errors so be sure to double check your test for problems marked wrong even though they were right. He is helpful and teaches to the test but his exams are really weird.
Lectures are boring because he post the lect videos online. clickers are mandatory. the tests were difficult, the prof expects you to know all the information and inside and out. I worked really hard for a bio elective. No drop exams. there are quizzes reviews. He NEEDS a TA
Overall Knapp is pretty great! He might not be that enthusiastic in his class, but he knows what he is talking about and cracks a few pretty good jokes throughout the year. He is pretty generous when it comes to curves. The tests aren't too hard, but you will definitely not study the night before and expect to do well. Overall I really like the guy
Tests were difficult, I would study a week before & still make 60 bcuz he uses tricky wordings. Big test bank cuz he expects u to really know ur stuff. Lectures are mandatory as clickers are for a grade. Nice thing is that he post lectures online. I never missed a lecture but still failed every test & passed cuz of my clickers & 100 on all quizzes
He's a very organized and smart man. He's really chill and makes few mistakes. I'm not sure what the other person was talking about because he certainly does not curve. I enjoyed the class, wish there was a second semester.
Pros: Know's his stuff, post lectures online, nice guy, sometimes funny, can end class early sometimes, accessible after class Cons: Only Microbio prof at UH, monotone lectures, clicker q's, can put you to sleep Tips: Find a clicker buddy, study his lectures, befriend him, do a study group, read q's carefully, good notes, and pray for a curve.
Only Micro professor at UH. The material is easy to understand if you study, but the grading is not forgiving. Rarely curves if ever, and only one of the quizzes is dropped. But if you're pre-med get used to that. That aside, the material is interesting and explained quite well. Some people find him boring, but I liked the subject so I didn't mind.
Very straightforward, he tells you everything you need to know. The exams are not cummalitive however concepts are revisted and recycled each unit so don't fall behind. Doesnt bump up grades and almost never curves but offers a generous amount of extra credit and a bonus question on each exam and quiz. Very fair class, you get what you work for.
this is a tough class and it requires a lot of time and effort, but he is a good professor and offers extra credit through clickers and bonus questions on exams. homeworks and quizzes are really important to do because some of the quizzes/exams have questions from them. overall a good class!
4 tests that are kinda hard. Lots of BONUS questions and free points. Quizzes are at home, lectures are booooring. If you read the textbook and do the smartworks properly you'll get an A. Only curves if class average is low. Extra credit available through clickers.
Professor is very knowledgeable. Lectures are kinda boring, but info on his slides appear on tests. Quizzes, HW, and attendance also contribute towards your grade. BEWARE tests contain many "two of the above" & "all/none of the above" answer choices so make sure you know your stuff! Lots of bonus questions to boost your grade. Solid professor.
Alright lectures, sometimes dull but not bad. Clickers are 10% of the grade, and he offers extra credit with them. Online homework and quizzes. Tests aren't bad if you memorize his slides, some of the questions can be pretty tricky though. He likes to have a lot of all of the above or some of the above type questions. Overall not bad
He can be rough on the edges, but is helpful at office hours. Extra credit on quizzes, tests and tied into clickers. Made a high B average on the tests and everything else was an easy 100 on homeworks, quizzes and clickers. Make a study group and look at old tests, and slides to be best prepared. Lectures can be boring but gives good info.
Good professor, knowledgable about material and accessible outside of class. Reading helps but most info is on the powerpoints. Attending lectures is recommended for points and extra credit.
I was failing at first and then ended up with an A- so it's very doable once you get the hang of the class. Extra credit from clickers and quizzes were given, homework was easy, and he uploads all his lectures so if you miss class, it isn't too bad. Reviewing quizzes and clicker questions help since he repeats a lot of those questions on the exams
Dr. Knapp is honestly an amazing teacher! He is very nice and you just need to go to his office hours and get to know him and he will explain the material to you. Be prepared though, because he does not just tell you the answer, but he asks you questions so you can figure it out yourself. Tests are tricky because of the wording, but easy A!
He can get a little boring at times and sometimes his slides have a lot of information. However, he does upload them online and clickers are mandatory and count for attendance as a grade as well as for extra credit. His tests come from his slides exactly, so as long as you pay attention to that, you shouldn't need many other resources.
Knapp's lectures may be boring, but you should still attend because he says things in class that will be on the test. I would not recommend relying on the video recordings because they are of poor audio quality. All of his test content comes straight from his lectures so reading the book is not necessary unless you need to clarify a concept.
Very approachable. His exams are a little bit tricky because of the wording but he definitely never throws any surprises on the tests. He stays true to his lectures and he uploads them online for students. He does extra credit clickers as well. HW and quizzes are easy. Put in a decent amount of effort and this class will be a straightforward A.
Lectures are monotoned but he'll crack a jokes. He's accessible for questions ALWAYS. He legit gives you direct answers for the exam if you pay attention. Tons of ExCr. and easy assignments to boost your grade. And keeps you updated in comparison to other professors which shows he hasn't loss his passion for teaching like the person below suggested
This man is the Marvel Cinematic Universe of Biology. He delivers, his exams are exactly like his lectures, he always replies to emails on time. Go through every video lecture or pay attention in class (pick your poison). DO ALL THE HW AND QUIZZES (they aren't hard). Exams aren't hard if you study your notes (straightforward)
Knapp is a great teacher He is very approachable and is open to all questions. His tests are Very straightforward in respect to his lectures. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS WATCH HIS LECTURES TWO DAYS BEFORE THE TEST AND YOU WILL GET AN A IN THE CLASS!!!! People who complain about their grades are the ones too lazy to listen to his lectures plain and simple
Knapp should seriously have a much higher rating on RMP. He's a great lecturer, knows his microbiology well and knows how to EXPLAIN the material concisely and clearly. His slides + notes taken in class during his lectures how to get an A on the exams. If you don't listen in class or even try to know the material then don't complain.
Lectures are boring, but he takes attendance and asks clicker questions. His questions on tests are sometimes wordy and confusing. You really have to understand the information. He was flexible with his time and always worked out a time to meet with me because I couldn't make his normal office hours.
In 2018 the course changed... For context this course is more difficult than the genetics courses offered at UH. Questions are A, B, C, D, E, F, all of the above/none of the above, a and b, only two... You need to know all the concept by heart. I would recommend to not do the review and memorize the slides, good luck...
Dr. Knapp posts recordings of his lectures online which is good but attendance is required because he gives clicker questions and uses that for attendance and then as a category on its own. The exams are horrible. The way he words his questions sucks and his answer choices suck even more (2 are correct, 3 are false, all but 1, etc) avoid if you can
He is very boring, I never paid attention in class cause i'd always fall asleep. His tests are really hard, I recommend to study the text book and to do the HW and learn it that way. His test are extremely hard and all done online, you will have to know the material by heart to pass. Nice guy though.
Prof. Knapp knows his stuff, but his lectures are boring and I didn't learn much from them. I solely learned the material on my own through the textbook & hw. He gives detailed test reviews and sends emails pretty often to remind us and keep us updated, which is nice. Go to class for clickers & extra credit. You have to work for your grade!
His lectures are enough to study for the exam, but he mumbles a lot. His exams are super specific, some of the questions ask for minute details, and the answer choices range from A- F (none of the above, two of the above). There is Smartwork5 homework. Attendance is mandatory since there is a clicker grade.
Good teacher, good class. Would recommend!
Understand his lecture slides, review click q's, and memorize all the slides. The extra credit I got from my clickers really helped my grade. The exams are difficult with many "none of the above", "two of the above", and "all of the above" answer choices.
hw, quizzes, clickers are 30 percent of grade that are easy to get, but tests are 70 percent and they are tough. just tests random details and includes answer choices to confuse you. keep an 85 test average for an A. avoid this class if you do not need it. prep several days ahead of time for the test. he is rude and aggressive in office hours.
Knapp is by most measures a fantastic professor. He's passionate about biology, and really wants to help each student. However, you have to really study for each test, as the format is very tricky (a,b,c, ab,bc, none) unless you have the material memorized very well. Also, attendance is 10% of the grade. Beware of homeworks that take about 90 mins.
Difficult course especially how the exams are set up, but not impossible. Test counts for a lot but clickers count for extra credit (up to 2.5 on grade). Smartwork assignments and online quizzes are simple. I made 2 C's and 2 B's on the 4 exams and still got an A. Dont be discouraged and seek help. Final is not cumulative thankfully.
This class needs STUDYING IN DEPTH. Tests are very hard but if you read his power points carefully and understand every single detail, you'll be fine. 30% of the grades are HW, quizzes and attendance which can help a lot. 70% are tests and if you do good on two of them you'll be fine. Make sure you dedicate time study. He cares about his students.
An upper level biology course where an A is guaranteed if you put in the work. Exams are directly based on facts from the lecture slides. Youll need his explanation to understand the slides. So either go to class and annotate the slides or rewatch the lectures at your own pace. He looks like an older version of Liam Payne from One Direction.
Good professor, lectures are a bit boring and microphone quality sucks so hard to hear. Recorded lectures also hard to hear. Be sure to take good notes in lecture or to at least read the textbook and add notes to his slide. His tests are very detailed with answer choices like 2 of the above and etc, so be sure to know concepts by heart.
Graded on attendance, I took it twice and didn't do any better the second time, I still don't think I could have ever done any better. Not an easy class and his lectures are pretty boring, unfortunately is a required course for biology majors and is the only teacher.
Professor Knapp is one of best professors. He is very caring. His exams are exactly from his lecture slides. All you have to do is study them very very well. He doesn't ask question outside his lecture slides. I am sure people who rated him bad clearly didn't study. 4 exams + homeworks + quizzes + clickers. Again study his slides and A+ for sure <3
His lectures are pretty boring as he's monotone and the microphone quality sucks. The tests are based on his lectures so know them well. He mostly has questions with answer choices like all of the above, none of the above, 2 of the above so you have to know the information well. Go to class, do the clicker questions because they are extra credit.
He curves. I emailed him in the beginning of the semester and he said he does not curve at all but trust me, there is no way I got the grade I got without him curving. I failed my first exam and did mediocre on the next two. If you have photocopic memory you will be fine on his exams. Be prepared for a, b, c, both a and b, abc answers.
Dr. Knapp is pretty straightforward, but this semester he scheduled our lab and lecture exams very poorly. 3 lab finals and a lecture midterm within 5 days, and lecture/lab cover different subjects. Be prepared to study, and then study more, and then study even more than that. Tests are meant to trick you, A-F answer choices. Be prepared!
Best BIOL lecturer at UH. Talks way too slow in class so I never paid attention and watched lectures at 2x speed at home. 5 pts extra credit. Take the class with a friend so you can switch clicker duties. Exam questions come straight from PPs - you really need to memorize and understand them. Does not test specifics on exams, only general ideas
Really enjoyed microbiology with Dr. Knapp. He provides all materials one would need to succeed. You will need the textbook. Listen in lecture- he explains things in ways that the textbook doesnt and it really helps. Study lecture notes, homework, blackboard quizzes, and of course read the textbook. I learned a lot.
Knapp is extremely helpful. He is always keeping all his students informed in every way possible. He wants you to pass his class. His lectures are boring and his labs are not hard but I cant stress enough that you will learn microbio with his help. He loves it and he is worth everything
Do to the pandemic situation I had to take my first W. I can't do online classes for science. He does talk slow in person & does get behind schedule. When I thanked him for help on the first exam afterward he said "yeah sure". I can take another biology course for my minor. His reviews and lectures are way too time consuming.
Knapp is cool! You work for the grade you get. His lectures are great but are not easy. He's not out to make your life harder, but you have to put in the outside work and GO TO CLASS to do well in the class. Recitations helped a lot to see what I needed I need to work on. Definitely need to read the book to get your A...
Go to class and pay attention! His lectures are on material that is very interesting but his voice is super monotone which makes it so hard to stay focused. His exam questions are definitely harder than it needs to be (2 of the above,none/all of the above) but if you study his slides well, you'll do well. Also has extra credit which saves lives.
He's been the only professor for micro, so he uses the same materials every yr. His exams are difficult bc there's like 5-7 answer choices: 2 of the above, none, none. The exams are like the lectures except a lot of application of concepts so reading the book helped bc his lectures didnt go in depth. Try to find past test banks bc those helped alot
There is req. poppers. But his class has taught me a lot. In class, he is willing to take questions as well as after class. There is team assignments. And a lot of ways to bring your grade up. TAKES attendance, but either way show up bc his online videos dont have the best audio quality. Sometimes, no class on days of test. Lectures are heavy.
He is an okay professor. His exams are multiple choice with "none of the above, two of the above, all of the above" which makes it hard to do well on exams if you dont know the material very well. Study the slides and make sure you understand them. His recorded lectures are not great quality, and he takes attendance during lecture.
Chill guy. Slightly rambles! But you can tell he knows what hes talking about. Exams are bad, kind of tricky, but the info comes from his lectures. Lots of work honestly. But if you need this class then your most likely interested in the biology field, so its do able and can be enjoyable. If you dont need to take this class I wouldnt.
Professor Knapp is very knowledgable about the material and receptive to questions. Although he is monotone, it is important to pay attention to what he says and add info on to the lecture slides. Exams are 72% of the grade, and if you go over his slides several times you are guaranteed at least a B. Offers easy extra credit. No A+ on grading scale
The class isnt bad if you look over the power points, attend lectures, and do the hw & quizzes. Dr. Knapp was understanding with technical difficulties, unlike many other professors, which I appreciated.
Knapp is amazing. He is my favorite professor at UH so far. As long as you read lectures and watch his live sessions (attend lecture if you are in person class because he will explain the lectures more in depth) you will get an A. I saw many people complain but that is because they chose not to study. Just review the given material, ez A.
Took Knapp during the fall so it was online due to COVID. Overall Knapp is a really good professor, his lectures aren't bad if you take notes on everything he says and he replies to emails fast to answer questions you may have. If you listen to his lectures and actually take notes on it to study, there's no reason you shouldn't at least make a B.
While the material is straightforward for the most part, he words his questions in ways that make you question your existence. Definitely would have gotten better grades if the questions were straightforward. Uses A, B, C, D, two from A-D, and none of the above as answer choices. Lecture videos werent a great experience. TAKE NOTES ON EVERYTHING!
COVID: Micro is a hard class as it is but learning completely online is even worse. Had to teach myself everything!!!! He did lectures and uploaded videos, also his notes are very simple but exams ask for more. His tests are terrible!!! Answer choices are "two of the answers are correct/wrong". Exams are hard and no extra credit atleat for FA20.
His lectures were good, better than most sciences for sure but you still have to work VERY hard. Exams had some extremely tricky, kinda manipulative questions, so ready carefully. Not a bad class, just make sure to have good study habits. As a person, he isn't very understanding when it comes to the pandemic and learning online.
no sympathy for students struggling during the pandemic. People saying to "study harder" are ruthless. Some students had a very difficult time despite trying their best and trying to juggle personal setbacks due to COVID. No curve, messed up every single test. rude replies in emails. ruined my chances of nursing school by 2 points.
Horrible. no sympathy, videos were NEVER clear at all. The final review video sounded like it was recorded underwater. Tests were tricky and made you second guess yourself with answers like two of the above, three of the above, etc. Despite all these faults on his side still no curve. I spent 4+ hours a day taking notes on each lecture and got a C
KNAPP WAS THE WORSTTTT!!! I made the biggest mistake in the worst by giving him a good teacher evaluation, I would do so much to take it back because he is a horrible professor who doesn't care about his students. His tests are incredibly hard and he doesn't curve. His teaching style is just reading off the slides> He responds to emails super late.
Was not considerate during the pandemic. No curve, no extra credit, etc. because grades/the course would lose integrity. Basically telling people to study harder despite acknowledging that we're all struggling right now.
I understand it's a student's responsibility for their grades, but during such a difficult time I would hope professors would be a little more considerate. Knapp claims he empathizes with his students but really, he does not care. No extra credit nor curve, something many of us needed during these struggling times. Exams were worded horribly.
The hardest class Ive ever taken and Im a straight A student. The tests are impossible to pass unless you memorize everything like the back of your hand. I tried giving him the benefit of the doubt this semester but he doesnt care about his students. Hes always curved in the past and didnt do so for this specific semester; He is inconsiderate.
Literally gave us no curve. Tests were hard for no reason and the multiple choice was so hard. We are literally in a pandemic and he had 0 sympathy. Lab and lecture was unfair too. Worst class ive ever taken. Take it at a community college if you can
Pearson assignments, Quizzes, Unit Quizzes, and Exams. Tests are heavy, but everything comes from his lectures. Watch his videos and go to his lectures to make sure you understand it because it is a lot. If you want to succeed, do not study last minute. I used the textbook and Youtube for enrichment. Tests prepare future medical professionals.
Dr. Knapp does care about his students. He gave us weekly to-do lists to help us keep track of everything. His tests are more difficult, however, my only piece of advice is to do the homework and REALLY try to understand each question. Read the answer feedback they give you. The class does make you work tho - so be prepared to study everyday.
Amazing professor!! Loved his lectures so much that I actually changed my major. His lectures were 30min-1.5hr and were very loaded. Although the material was heavy, he explained things very well and the assignments helped!
Professor Knapp was the WORST professor in the entire world. Had a terrible experience. He curves when there is not pandemic and has no consideration for when there is a pandemic. A lot of people failed!!! Don't take him. Not worth your diploma!
The only Microbiology professor teaching the class, but easily one of the rough classes taught by him. Tests make you second guess yourself with "none/all of the above" or "two/three of the above". Grades are not curved, and his recorded lecture videos during the pandemic were the worse with bad sound quality. Be prepared to expect the worse.
Dr. Knapp gives you tons of opportunities for extra credit, so try to take advantage of them. Tests are at CASA, and they're not cumulative. The lectures this sem were awful to listen to, but most exam Qs are verbatim from the slides. There's a lot of "2/all of the above" type of questions so be wary of those. Study well for exams & you'll be fine.
You need to LEARN and MEMORIZE the material if you want an A. His lectures are informational and the PowerPoint slides are packed with info you need to know. Teaching yourself in multiple layers e.g. memorizing ppt, taking multiple notes and rewatching lectures assures an A. Not easy at all but not too hard either. Just need to work for it.
I read the previous reviews on Knapp and thought I could suffice. I was wrong. Exam questions are so vague with so many options for answer choices; his lectures aren't always clear enough to understand what he's saying. He should consider tweaking his powerpoints because that's all you have to really study, and the textbook doesn't help.
Truly a great professor for is knowledgeable in his field. Watch the lecture and take heavy notes and you'll get a decent grade. For some of the questions on his test, you can almost hear him say the answer from the lecture--they're that important. Read the txbk for information but his lectures work just fine.
Good professor but the lecture videos were annoying to watch because professor smacks his lips a lot. If that doesn't bother you then you're good but as one of my pet peeves I couldn't stand to watch the lectures. Also, you can't use process of elimination on tests because all the questions have an "all/none of the above".
This is your classic, stereotypical professor. Isn't the most exciting, isn't the worst. Buy the textbook because it comes with the homework which is all online. Tends to ignore questions in class so maybe email instead. Take this class in the morning you might fall asleep. Don't really need to be in class, lectures are recorded, notes are posted.
Indifferent to you as his student. Hard to listen to lectures because he CONSTANTLY clears his throat, smacks his lips so much material you must take notes over everything. We all studied very hard and class test average was still failing. If you have difficulty staying focused or motivated dont take him. Retook to pass w a C- same material.
Took him for pre-nursing microbiology and it was the worst class I've ever taken. The tests are all from his lectures but his lectures are hard to understand. His tests are tricky. "all of the above", "a and b ",none of the above" type choices. He does not curve either. Sadly he is the only micro teacher at UH. So take this class at CC if u can
One of my favorite labs. I would 100% take it again. Dr. Knapp's lectures are a little difficult (read other reviews). The midterm and the final can really make or break your grade so study for those. The practical is easy if you pay attention to what you do in your biochemical tests. You'll do fine if you have a good TA and good lab partners.
Had him for micro lab, and it was pretty easy. The weekly workload for lab wasn't that bad, he would make you do a data sheet and then 1-2 questions. My TA was pretty chill and an easy grader. Labs usually didn't take the entire time. We had a midterm, final, and practical, which were all fairly easy. We also had to do a project that was fun.
His lectures are him reading off of the slides. Tests are a 67% of your grade and are filled with tricky "A, B , C, Two of the above, None of the above" type questions. He was pretty rude whenever people were confused in his class. He is the only microbiology teacher at UH though so good luck. Only 1 point extra credit and no curve.
do not take this class if you want to keep your sanity.
I personally enjoyed his class. As long as you have a proper studying routine and understanding of the content, you can do well in this class. I thought he gave pretty good lectures and taking notes on them really helped on the quizzes/exams. The questions can be tricky, but that is why it is important to really pay attention to his lectures.
Worst teacher ever I had a c in this class. Questions on the test are so vague its hard to pick the correct answer. U have to memorize everything. The textbook is useless and so is the homework which has no correlation to the tests. Boring teacher talks monotone no extra credit. The class average was a 75.
Okay, let me run it down for you. 1. DO NOT miss a single assignment (even the homework) do every single assignment. I promise you'll be fine. 2. Write down what he says for each slide including what's on that slide. 3. Most NSM professors do not offer extra credit or curved grade opportunities. (Even during a pandemic) 4. Try your absolute best.
This was single-handedly the worst class I took for my undergraduate degree. (I was a STEM major) In terms of grading, he is the least understanding and accommodating. Heavy on lectures, and the tests are majorly confusing with misleading answer choices. Study as hard as you can with as much attention to detail because he wont curve even a bit
Professor Knapp is a great professor. This lectures got the job done. His tests were a bit tricky, but youll be okay if you really know the material. If you put in the effort, you will be okay. Extra credit on every exam and no comprehensive final! The lab was also a great time.
He is very knowledgeable, but you need to pay attention to him. His exams are challenging no content-wise, but it is the wording of the questions, so try to really understand the material.
Lecture/ppt-based tests, dependent on how much participation and memorization that YOU can do. No need to read the textbook. Test questions can be kind of tricky, but if you study, you're fine. Light homework (roughly 10 questions/week) and sometimes Smartwork. Don't be scared of the previous reviews. He is not the monster I thought he would be.
By far the one of the worst professor i have ever had. His tests make 0 sense, makes you question everything that you know. the material itself is hard enough, his exams make it even more impossible for you to succeed. had to drop because his class is mostly exam based. good luck taking his class.
He's not a bad lecturer, but you will need to study A LOT by yourself. The course is test heavy and are very hard because of "A, B , C, Two of the above, None of the above, All of the above" type questions. It helped to take the lab course the same semester.
He's a great lecturer! His lectures are all you really need to do well on the exams. There is a textbook available but it's not needed to do well in the class. Clicker questions each lecture to take attendance but if you do well on them, they count for extra credit. Weekly homework assignments, lecture quizzes, and 4 exams.
Microbio lecture with him was the worst. His lectures are all just rambles. He doesnt explain anything. I had to learn EVERYTHING on my own. His tests are so confusing. you have to know every single detail to pass. I study a whole entire week for his exams just to make low Bs. It sucks! His lab class is fun only because he doesnt teach it TA's do!
Study a lot. This is not an easy class. There will be highs and lows. Do not expect sympathy from Knapp. Read and understand everything on the powerpoints (even the little letters). Lectures help with connections however self study is most efficient. As for exams, you either know it or you don't. Trust yourself. Goodluck!
Very possible to get an A. Class is completely lecture based, the hw is based on textbook but tests and quizzes are not. Just keep up with the lectures and youll be fine! His answer choices are kind of weird on the tests however if you know your stuff its not an issue. Would recommend him for microbio!
This class is very tough, be ready to spend all day studying. His exams are very very difficult: all of the above, none of the above, and two of the above questions are listed that make you second guess yourself. I recommend going to office hours and establishing a connection with Dr.Knapp. Do not second guess yourself and good luck!
He's honestly an okay professor, I mostly took this class so I can take the lab and I really enjoyed that part. All of his test is based on his slides, and he posts them. He does use clicker questions to take attendance and that does work into his grading. He cares a lot for this subject though, and is passionate about it. Overall a 9/10
If you are going to take him for microbio for science majors, you will be fine. I got to class for the clicker but don't pay attention. If I am being completely honest, you will not learn from this lecturing. I start studying a week before the test and so far I have gotten above a 90 on all of them. The semester is not over but I do expect an A.
His exams are basically the lecture and powerpoints but VERY VERY detail oriented. Good grades are achievable if you study the powerpoints thoroughly and VERY in depth. He's a nice understanding guy and have pretty good lectures that have mandatory clicker participation that's a part of the class grade, he excuses 7 absences though.
He knows how to teACH. Hes a little quiet in lecture so try sitting closer to him. His tests are honestly based on what he says. tricky tests tho
This professor is a JOKE. His exams are so detailed oriented and the majority of your grade depends on it. Max extra credit offered is 1.5 points but that doesn't nearly compensate for the damage that exams can do to your grade. I studied a lot yet constantly fought for my life in CASA. Just take this at a community college. At least he's funny.
You will think that you already pass but be careful I ended with a C+ even though my first tests were good and I did hw and quizzes. He knows his topic but explains too fast. Test questions are from power points but are tricky like a, b, c, d all above, enone of them.
Dr. Knapp is a very well informed professor. It goes without a doubt that he knows what he is talking about. However, his lectures were definitely not the most captivating. There are clicker questions along with "flipped" classes, Pearson assignments, and quizzes. Exams worth 68% of your grade and are focused primarily on slideshow and lecture info
Headache of a course. I barely survived, be willing to put in a lot of work don't expect to slack off. You must study for these exams like a good week prior it is very detail oriented and lecture based. You might know the material but the way the questions are formatted will have your brain in knots. Good luck, you'll need it.
Attendance is kinda mandatory since it is part of your grade (8%). Exams are lecture heavy, everything on them comes from the slides. An A is achievable, as long as you study days in advance. The weekly quizzes & unit quizzes are very helpful when it comes to exams. He also has a bonus question on each of the 4 exams.
I found this class to be easier than what I was told. I took this class alongside A&P II and I survived both. His lectures are boring but he uploads them online so you can rewatch them. The exams are powerpoint heavy, but its good to do the Pearson to review. Not that bad. Apply yourself and you will be fine. He's nice too so that's a plus.
He mumbles so much it's hard to understand what he is saying, recorded lectures have audio cuts. Provided exam reviews and study guides don't match up with the actual exams (questions are more specific or weren't even on reviews). Quizzes aren't hard, open book. Go to tutoring, study lessons before class.
Why on earth is there only 1 professor for this class at this school. His exams are awful. Every question is "1,2,3 of the above or none of the above". If you do not have a photographic memory good luck because his exams are SO detailed & all straight from the ppt. His lectures are difficult for me to follow & kind of boring. Nice guy tho.
Dr. Knapp is very passionate about teaching and does his very best to ensure his students succeed. He takes care to answer any and all questions during the lecture, and he makes it clear that he is available for help outside of class if needed. His lectures are also very interesting, and as long as you put in the effort, you will succeed.
I liked Dr. Knapp. His exams are tricky tho. Beware if english is your 2nd language. He does a lot of true/false but goes back & forth on his verbage - it gets hard to keep up. You have to know specific details to catch why something isn't true, as well. Exam averages are below 69. He doesn't curve *until the very end* and makes you sweat over it.
Professor Knapp's lectures can be dry, but his slides are detailed. Exams are challenging, but manageable with consistent studying. Try using unstuckstudy AI and the free textbook to prepare - it really helped me.
i feel so bad for people who are required to take microbio with him. he mumbles so much, his test questions are so specific and wordy, and just overall do not recommend. i will say his pre lecture vids and ppt slides helped me pass the exams. also, if you cannot focus in large classrooms, do not take because he only does lectures with 100+ ppl
I was so stressful on his Microbiology class for this semester. I need to take this class because it requires to my degree. I don't know why only him teaching Micro and don't have other options to choost. He's a good lecturer but the test is heavy and tricky. If don't wanna effect your GPA, don't take him if you are not good at reading slides.
His class is very difficult if it is your first science class that you take at U of H. You have to know your study style before coming into the class because his tests are very difficult. You have to know the material really well to do well in the class. He does drop the lowest test score though. He is pretty accessible outside class.
Material would've been interesting for me if his lectures weren't so monotoned. There are pop up questions each lecture which is basically how you get attendance. Exams wouldn't be difficult if his answer choices don't confuse me; it's the way he formats the answer choices. Just study weeks in advance and figure out your learning style.
I am a first year and this was my first science course coming into UH. A lot of people say that his class was super difficult, but I honestly think that you just have to be ready to put the effort in. Watch his lecture videos, and use the weekly quizzes as a practice before exams because they are very similar. You can do really good if you try!
develop a study technique before taking his class. lectures are very monotone and not really engaging. rewatch his lectures and STUDY. he does take attendance via pointsolutions (kinda like a pop quiz). exams and quizzes can be confusing solely because of his wording, so BE CAREFUL.
Great professor, just develop a study technique.
The course content is interesting if you like bio and the exams are mainly from his slides/lectures. Reviews for each unit given are pretty spot-on with exams. He doesn't curve exams but gives slight extra credit with course evaluation & clicker questions. The only thing is that he talks slowly but I just rewatch his lecture videos that he posts.
Professor Knapp honestly is not bad, just monotone in lectures. Sometimes it sounds like a ramble or mumble so sit in the front. He does a lot of clicker questions so pay attention. Also for tests TEACH IT TO YOURSELF. The slides are KEY, wish I would've found a good study method sooner, but prioritize this class.
Great professor, during lectures he assigns popper questions which can reflect well his exam style. I recommend making sure you go into the lecture with a good idea of the subject because he does ramble a little but it's still pretty interesting. PRACTICE, a lot of his previous exam questions and look over the review sheet. Good luck!
His class is very lecture heavy and it's guaranteed that you'll self-teach. He tells you right off the bat how to study for his class and his advice helped me personally. His test questions can be tricky. The overall workload isn't bad but you'll spend a lot of time studying. I would advice to watch the pre-lecture videos before coming to class.
Tests are 68% (4 exams, lowest dropped). Quizzes/homework/attendance 32%. Attendance is 8% (8 free absences, clickers used). No curve, but you can get up to 1.5 pts extra credit. Memorize the slides!!! Tests are tricky/detailed. I watched his lectures after class, used YouTube, and made flashcards using his exam review. Be ready to cram!
This class was hard in my opinion. Majority of our grade was the exam, but the material was directly from the slides so only study the lecture slides. Definitely find an effective way to study because with this class, you can't go off of memorizing the material, you have to actually understand it.
Attending lectures is a must with Dr. Knapp, and watching prelecture vids/taking notes on his provided slides is very helpful to do before class. He explains microbio simply and is always willing to answer questions. Just don't talk in class! His exams and quizzes reflect lecture material well, and the HW is easy with help from the textbook
pretty easygoing with attendance, classwork/deadlines, and exams. decent curve at the end of the course. lectures are so-so; they can start to drone but he does make an effort to stay engaging. there's a good deal of busywork between the homework and quizzes but the deadlines are forgiving enough to work with. would recommend/take again.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but most days there are clicker questions that make up a significant portion of your grade, so be there. Lectures can be dry at times, but he's a cool person and very open to helping his students. Don't be offput by his directness, he is very understanding.
I'm a straight A student, but this class was really difficult. I didn't care for his personality or teaching style, his exams are really hard, and attendance/ poppers are mandatory. It's feasible to get a good grade, but you REALLY have to study.
Make sure you know as many details on the reviews he provides. Exam answer choices range between 4-6 with "two of the above", "none of the above", "all of the above", etc. so beware of trick questions. Even though the formatting is scary, the actual content of the exams isn't so bad. Attendance is done with clickers that can become EC at the end.
just take this class at hcc/lonestar. don't watse your time here.
His class isn't horrible, it's definitely manageable. You really gotta know the information, as his exams are hard. It's all logic based and questions on the exam will try to make you slip on some wording here and there. Study early and study hard. There is one dropped exam and once you grasp his question-style, you'll be fine.
This class humbled me to the max. If you don't know how to study, pls learn how to before taking this course. This class only had 4 exams so its really test heavy. The wording of his exams are easily misunderstood so you really have to pay close attention. Get ready to read and take notes a LOT.
This course is run by TAs. Most are nice, but mine had an oversized chip on her shoulder. She would grade super hard without explaining the criteria to us. She actually withheld information that she was supposed to share because she didn't have a good poker face. can't say her name, but if you find out that your TA hasn't taken microbiology, quit.
This lab honestly sucked as we did not know our grades on canvas till the last minute. The class consists of 11 lab sheets one is dropped, the unknown project and two midterms. It's really important that you pass the midterms to do well in this class. He does give three points EC. My TA was amazing so I have no complaints there.
You really really have to study for his class. Exams are hard but if you put in the time to study you will get an A. Lectures aren't the most engaging so be prepared to doze off in class a little bit. He is very accessible whenever you try to get into contact with him. Overall a really great professor!
Lab is extremely fun!! Dr. Knapp runs it very well and doesn't stress you out too much for a lab class. Your ta can make or break your experience though
He is not very good at actually explaining content. Lectures just felt like he was repeating the slides. The only reason to show up to class was for attendance points for extra credit.
Dr. Knapp is menacing at first until you get to know him. His lectures take some getting used to, but he explains all important concepts in depth. He also gives a lot of resources. Dr. Knapp also has amazing availability. If you want to succeed, study after every lecture. Make sure to do well on the first three exams because the last exam is TOUGH!
