His class is funny, which says a lot since he teaches accounting
Great professor. Very amusing.
he's awesome....very funny and amusing...will keep your attention!!

Very hot. Very hot. :-P

great guy...very funny...kept my attention even at 8AM! make sure you go though! or else you'll be lost later!
accounting can be like pulling teeth, i cant think of a better professor to take it with......cares for the students and makes sure you understand the material, definately go to class all of the time though.....by the way hes hilarious
awesome professor, wants students to succeed. somehow, he manages to make accounting interesting, even at 8am. his anecdotes really give his lectures some life, and often prove to be lessons of their own.
Excellent Teacher! Funny, and helpful. He is the only reason that I didn't drop the class.
very clear with expectations, and very intersting. But- the exams are hard and he is not very lenient. If you take his class you will need to visit the TA's on a regular basis.
I am in love with Dick Kochanek. He is my hero and his stories are the best thing ever.
Easy class, plus his stories are tremendous
HARD class but AWESOME guy-- dick's the man- you'll love him
Dick is truly an amazing individual. Hilarious in a way you've probably never seen anyone be hilarious. Love him to death. Should definitely take this course with him. He is willing to help anyone.
This class is HORRIBLE! I failed this class at uconn with dick and then went to Boston U and took it and got a B+. The professor is funny and can hold student interest, however he is not clear, nor is he helpful. Noone can learn acct with 350 other students!! I would not recomend this professor or this class.
We LOVE Dick Kochanek. He is hilarious and has the best stories. Keeps the class interested and is a great teacher, very smart. Tests are pretty hard, but fair. Do not miss out on having him as a teacher.
Dick is great. His accounting class was one of the easiest classes I've taken, and I really learned alot from his methods. He's hilarious without trying to be, and the nicest guy ever.
I love this teacher!! He is so helpful and goes at a good pace, so the students are not too confused. He also obviously cares about the wellbeing of his students and talks to us not like a 300 person lecture but more like a conversation with a buddy!
Dick is one of the funniest teachers ever and i enjoyed this class a lot. Tests are fair and easy if you pay attention and ask questions in class and do the review tests he gives you...tests are very similar with different numbers
His exams are very very tricky, so beware. If you are in the business school this is a required class and he is the only professor for this course, so you don't have much of a choice. I advise you READ all the chapters and keep on top of things. Do not take this class as an elective. On the bright side, kochanek is VERY entertaining.
Oh My God, You have to take a class with ****, otherwise you will regret it for your whole life. He is funny, and presents material in a very organized, clear manner. If you don't have accounting backgrounds, you might have a bit tough time at the beginning, at long as you listen to him, you should be fine. He is the Best!!~~
I can only imagine the rasons this prof got good ratings is because students knew stuff on their own. He doesn't teach anything and he favors others--he fixed grades (in a high range) for some people just becaue they saw him. He lives up to his name...
He really cares about his students and you can get help from the TAs 11-5 every day. The material and tests are kind of hard but if you go to class it's not so bad. I don't like accounting at all but this professor makes it almost fun.
Best Teacher for Accounting...hands down!
Great teacher. Likes to tell stories during class sometime. He is truly a one of a kind professor and you will understand what I mean after you attend the first class
Richard (****) is awesome. His exams are really tough though. He designs them so that you have to really think. The material isn't that easy either. But as I said, **** is awesome. He tells great stories.
nice guy, terrible teacher, not clear on anything.
Terrible teaching skills. Funny, but can't teach. If you ask a question he will make fun of you.
This class is pretty challenging and accounting is an extremely boring subject to begin with. He tells funny stories, but his tests are extremely difficult and tricky. I would not recommend taking accounting with 350 other students unless you read the book several times a week, practice acct problems, and see TAs if you want an A or high B.
He is awesome. Tough class, tough material but gives you every chance and possibility to do good. Don't expect to get a good grade and do nothing. You must read, do homework, and study! He gives lots of practice problems, practice exmas, even bonus points that get added to the total of your grade. He is SO NICE and his stories are hilarious.
hard class no matter what. he tries to help out as much as possibly but tough material. do bonus problems and visit TAs!! pay attention in class is the best advice i could give and take a lot of notes. a really sweet old man who loves to teach and want you to learn. tells funny stories and really enjoys himself.
**** is the man. It is a tough class but if you go to every class and take a lot of notes you will be ok. It is important to do the bonus problems and pay good attention though. He is very organized and cares a lot about his students. His stories are great too.
You will either take to it or you wont, theres no middle ground here. Professor Kochanek provides you with the information to do well on exams, but if you have trouble like I did, the class goes much too quickly and at the end you'll be hoping for that C like I did. Excellent in his presentations, but intended primarily for Accounting majors only.
I don't understand why some people keep saying his tests are hard and tricky. His exams are just like the practice ones he has online. If you can do the practice one, then you'll be fine on his actual exams. Also as long as you go to his class, pay attention, do the bonus problems, look over the textbook...you can easily pass it with an A or B
not an easy class! you really really have to work hard to get a good grade. always go to lecture and do the homework, and you'll be in good shape. great teacher though, he makes lecture very engaging and is very good at explaining concepts. The exams are tricky, and if you go through them too fast, you'll mess up. Do the bonus problems!
**** kochanek IS THE MAN. Take this class!!!!
this class is impossible. he goes way too fast and assumes you know what he's talking about. i did all the work, homework, practice exams, went to the TAs...nothing helps. he likes to trick you on exams. i have a 4.0 and will be lucky to get a D in this class.
He is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. The tests are tricky, but he gives two hours for 50 multiple choice. If you work hard and go to class you will do well. You can get up to 4-5 extra credit points added to your FINAL grade. If you have the philosophy Cs get degrees you are almost guaranteed to fail out of the course.
Great teacher. Must keep up with work.
LOVE Dick. Great professor. Hard class, difficult to keep up with the work but not impossible to get a bad grade. Only 3 exams plus some extra credit. Must keep up with assignments and practice exams or it's too easy to fall behind.
the worst teacher at uconn. people like him because he talks with a really high voice and tells stories about his cats, but he makes exams to trick you. he wants the average grade to be a 70. i went to every class and all the reviews and still got a C. which was the best grade between me and 4 friends i had in the class.
Dick Kochanek is awesome!!! Class is fun and he is funny. Must go to lecture and do all extra credit opportunities and pay close attention in class in order to do well. Test can be tricky, but if you pay attention in lecture, he warns you about these type of questions.
Dick Kochanek is AWESOME! He's a great professor who really cares about his students and gives them more tools than they need to succeed. The reason people don't like him is because although they may come to class, you really have to pay close attention to everything he says. Great class, you will learn a lot.
Ummm ok. I just got my grade for this class and I want to cry. All of his exams are multiple choice -- that's why I did so poorly. He purposely tries to mess you up on the exams -- writes them to be as difficult as humanly possible, includes a lot of tricks. He's a nice guy and it's a good class but I didn't get the grade I deserved.
Hard tests, but funny guy
It really bothers me that the ratings for Dick Kochanek are so completely off-base. Just because he is unintentionally funny and can come off as a lovable old man doesn't mean he is a quality professor. (Full Disclosure: I received a B+ in financial accounting) It's indisputable that for most kids he is a hard, semi-clear, and unhelpful teacher.
It begins with a 'G'...that's right you got it - Dick is GREAT! To all other's who posted poor ratings -- it is because you didnt receive the grade you wanted. This is a COLLEGE level course...so you must put in COLLEGE level work and study up! He is not like other professors who simply give you a grade for showing up. He is GREAT!
Not a helpfull teacher. Difficult material is covered very quickly and TA's are not too much of a help because there are so many students going to them. Dick is at many times a Dick. Do not take the course if you already have some difficult classes on your schedule.
Nice guy but awful professor. Worst part is that he purposfully makes exams to trick you. Explanations are average and since he wrote the textbook if you dont understand him good luck reading that.
great guy, great lecturer, HORRIBLE CLASS SETUP. his classes are based on 3 tests and 3 tests only, with 12 possible bonus pints. his test are extremely hard and tricky. 3tests, no hw, no quizes, basically forgetting about the importance of effortVersu achievement, which is extremely disappointing given his charm and talent.
Keeps the classes entertaining, but puts no effort in for the students. ABCD scantans with"none of the above" used in all questions, making all your answers doubtful. No homework, just 3 tests and a few bonus points which are miniscule.Tests are extremely difficult and are worded differently from his classwork and suggested excercises.
Dick is a great teacher. The class is hard, but if you work at it, you can get a good grade. You need to keep up with the material everyday by doing the homework, taking good notes, and paying attention in clas. Go to the TAs if you need to because they help and find old exams from people who have taken the class because he reuses questions.
Great guy and a pretty good teacher. He tries to teach you not only accounting but lessons about life too which are usually very humorous. Tests can be kinda tricky but just keep up with the homework and the practice tests and you will have no problem. Dick is a great guy.
Good guy. He explains things very clearly but you really need to know what's going on at all times if you want to do well. Tests are fair and the bonus assignments can really make a difference in your grade. His lectures can get dull but he usually likes to take time to make a joke or tell a funny story. Good class overall.
He is an exciting teacher, so cute! He gives extra credit which is really helpful and I highly suggest doing it because the test a pretty hard, but if you know the material you will be fine. Take advantage of the TA's for the class!
Thought this was a very hard class. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!! It will save you. Don't fall behind in the beginning, because it will be impossibly to catch up. Do all of the reading and hw before class. This class is a lot of work
Easily the most thoughtful and caring teacher i have ever had. He really wants to see everyone do well and does a great job of telling you what you need to do in order to do well. NEVER get behind in the homeworks/reading and you will do fine. Tests are somewhat hard and you really need to know the material to do well. Class is a lot of work.
This professor is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet in your lifetime. He comes across as genuine and caring. This is also one of the hardest classes you will ever take. It's a lot of work and it's easy to fall behind. DO NOT take this class if you have a heavy course load. I've seen really smart students do horribly. The workload is intense
Great guy, but horrible professor. I got an A- in this course ONLY because I basically taught myself the entire course. I NEVER went to the lectures. Go see the TA's when you can (mornings are best and less crowded). This class grades you on how much you know and can apply on tests, NOT on how hard you work. Don't take this with a heavy courseload
Be warned: this is a very hard class. If you do not keep up with the readings, you will fail. However, if you do keep up with the readings, Dick will be very willing to help you. Extra credit assignments offer a chance to boost your grade, but don't rely on them. And if you need help, seek it early. Before you fail the first midterm.
Anyone who says this professor is bad is insane. Rich is one of the best professors I've ever had, and this class isn't THAT hard if you do the work that is assigned to you, which isn't an overwhelming amount at all. You really can't afford to miss any classes, as you will simply fall behind, but the TAs are awesome and are always willing to help.
Dick is a great guy. Really funny and entertaining. He really cares about his students doing well. The class is pretty hard. You have to attend every single class to do well and read the chapters assigned. He gives a lot of practice work and practice exams. He teaches throughly and clearly but you have to follow along closely.
The only saving grace in this class is the bonus points. Make sure to do them!!! Exams are tricky, reading the book is a must, and going to every class is mandatory. One of the hardest gen-eds.
Hands down the greatest teacher I had at UCONN. Not everyone can grasp accounting but Dick teaches it in an understandable way. Exams are far from difficult if you keep up. Just do the homework and extra credit and you will be fine. Not an easy A but definitely manageable. LOVED THIS COURSE and Dick was G-R-E-A-T GREAT!
tough class, need to stay with the material. he is a good guy and pretty good at teaching it but not super helpful. Tests are tough and class requires a lot of work, definitely one of my tougher classes so far here at uconn
This guy is the best professor I've had so far at UConn. He really cares about his students and is very willing to help. The class is difficult though so keep up with the work and see the TA's often.
Tough course. At the end of the semester, the curve for the class was based on the bonus points; so getting every point possible is important. Also,if you bring the bonus sheets to the TAs before class, they will walk you through it. It was difference between getting a C and a B for me.
People say he is a nice guy and cares for his students and all, but he seemed to be the opposite. His clever remarks and "life lessons" to the students got annoying and he came off as way too pretentious. I really hoped that he would show genuine interest and care for his students to do well in the course. His support did not seem genuine to me.
Professor Kochanek is the best professor I have had yet at UConn. I am a fourth semester Engineering student and took Accounting 2001 for fun. I recommend taking this intro course. He is HILARIOUS. He gives out handouts every class and keeps everyone engaged. If you don't take this class, just sit in on one class. :)
His lectures vicious and his exams are tricky.
He tests on the tiny, tricky details that you'll never remember as soon as you leave the class. Don't take his class if you can avoid it.
The setup of the class is very unfair. There are only 3 exams the determine your grade. There is too much material covered. He once said in class that he is happy he can teach us more than the typical intro to accounting course....
I think that his exams were fair. If you pay attention in class, do the practice exams, keep up with the homework, and see the TAs, you should be okay. Definitely do all of the practice material he suggests, and pay attention to the wording on exams. He's a good guy and fair professor.
Richard is one of the most enthusiastic professors, you'll ever have,& is entertaining w/his stories and quote of the day.Attendance is mandatory,& you must do homework. Also, complete all bonuses,as they have the potential to raise your grade 4%.There are 2 midterms & a final;try to find someone who has taken the course & study from their past exams.
Really nice guy but his exams were impossible. Three exams determine final grade and I studied for weeks for them and barely passed. He gives you up to 12 extra credit points though and is helpful if you go see him during office hours.
Nicest guy you will ever meet. Loves his job and genuinely wants you to learn the subject. You need to attend class and study if you want to do well. Tests are tricky but he gives you past exams. Great teacher, tough course.
This was one of my favorite classes. Sure the material may be dull, but Richard creates a great atmosphere for learning with his crowd control and class participation. The entire course is graded off of 3 tests with a possible 12 extra credit points, so just show up to class, take the practice exams, and you're golden.
He was the worst profosser I've had at UConn. The HW was nothing like the tests. There is a curve at the end but he never tells anyone so half the class drops out. Make sure to take this class when you can dedicate twice as much time as every other class.
Class isn't a cakewalk but is a rite of passage for business students. Accounting is similar to math, it isn't about how hard you work but whether you understand the concepts! Most kids don't realize that in college results matter and that you want to hire an accountant/lawyer/doctor that can do the job period regardless of how hard he "tries."
I absolutely love Kochanek! He is the sweetest professor and really wants all his students to succeed. I definitely recommend going to class and reading the textbook. Exams are on the harder side but bonus problems can help bring up your grade.
He's a great lecturer and a sweet man. However, you need to CONSTANTLY be on top of the material. Exams are challenging, even if you do study, but not impossible. He may curve the exam if the class does bad. But you CAN'T study for this at the last minute. This will be the class that separates the kids from the adults. Make the effort to do well.
Good lecturer - he was really funny and kind. Gave a lot of supplemental material to help. Exams were really hard though.
It's a class that you have to keep on top of. If you start slacking off, it will reflect in your exam grades. Lecture itself is not that useful as compared to the handouts he gives you at the beginning of class, and the cumulative reviews and exercises in the books. Do the exercises and reviews and you can get an A.
Great guy. Couldn't be nicer. Received a good grade just by doing all the reviews he posts for you and going to class. It is tricky, but if you do all the exercises he provides there is no reason why you can't get at least a B. Also curves tests. Fair and nice. Don't sweat this class.
Tough class, but if you do literally everything he provides you with you should do fine. I honestly think he makes the course a lot harder than it needs to be. Definitely a good and useful class, but don't take it unless you need to.
into to financial is an AWESOME class. if your in business you have to take it anyway, but i mean, **** is the man. he is super organized and KNOWS how to teach. go to class, do the hw/bonuses, and pay attention, and you should learn. plus, his occasional stories are wicked entertaining. its a solid class, trust me.
Hardest class I've taken at UConn so far, but hes an awesome guy. You absolutely cannot BS your way through this class. I spent twice as much time on doing stuff for ACCT than any of my other classes. Really funny guy, but if he wasnt funny students would be crying in class (which I've seen during his exams)
His class was one of the hardest classes that I've taken at Uconn. If you are not sure if you can dedicate 150% of yourself in this class, do not take it. He is absolutely a nice guy, but really he makes the materials much harder than they need to be. I found the textbook not really useful either.
Wow. This class was insanely difficult. Richard is a cool professor and cares about his students, but his tests, while curved (to an average grade of C), are ridiculously hard. You're best bet to get through this class is take the practice exams and try and find a previous year's exam to study from. Also, don't skip lecture - you'll regret it.
Hard class but Dick is very clear about his expectations and what's necessary to do well. The book exercises are very good practice and the handouts from lecture are helpful. If you slack off, it will hurt your grade. TA's are always available and helpful also. Dedicate enough time to understand the material and you will get a good grade.
This is by no means an easy class - but you would see the same with any intro accounting class. However, Dick Kochanek is the best teacher I ever had in college. You should go to all the classes bc it helps, and just to experience all of Dick's anecdotes and his unique approach to teaching. He's very funny and has a way about it him for sure!
The most dedicated and thorough professor I have ever had. He expects you to work hard, but puts a lot of effort into making his lectures great. He provides you with endless practice problems, 9-5 TA hours all throughout the week, several opportunities for bonus points, and curves tests if necessary.
Great professor. Very funny & super nice guy. Material may be hard but as long as you never miss class, Dick explains everything very well and will teach you everything you'll need to know on the exam. He also provides a lot of extra practice problems. Grade is solely based off of exams but if you put in the extra effort you can do well. I got an A
This was easily the most difficult class I have ever taken but Dick is an amazing professor, he really cares about the students and their grades and his handouts are awesome! Keep on top of homework and bonuses. Also the TA's are so helpful!
I dont know what everyone is talking about, as long as you do all of the work and homework and actually take the time to try in this class it is so straight forward and easy. He is a great professor, and makes everything very clear and understandable. Clearly if you do not do any work and don't go to class you are not going to do well.
This class was great. He is a great professor and really cares for his students to do well. If you take this class, definitely do all the bonus assignments, it will add 4 points to your final grade. He also curves the course at the end of the year, so do not worry if you don't do incredibly well on the first exam. Exams are mirrors of the practices
Dick Kochanek is definitely an experience. He is the sweetest old man and he just wants people to love accounting as much as he does. However, he is by no means easy. This is a challenging course. To do well you need to keep on top of the work, do all the problems he assigns, and I'd recommend reading a few chapters in the summer.
Taking ACCT 2001 with Dick is not just a class but a learning experience. The class is challenging and demands a lot of discipline & hard work and separates the motivated from the unmotivated. However Dick teaches in such perfect clarity & enthusiasm and cares for all his students Tells great stories that makes you improve your potential. Go Dick!!
It's a challenging course, but if you stay on top of your work and pay attention in class it's very straight forward. Dick is extremely organized, strait forward, and has every available resource you could possibly ask for. Any student who thinks otherwise isn't paying attention or using resources he offers. I wish the chem professors were like him
Dick is an absolute legend. By far my favorite professor, class is definitely entertaining. However, the course is definitely challenging but if you do enough to prepare weekly you can easily walk away with at least a B.
Best Professor I have had here at UConn. He is so clear when lecturing, and he gives you so much material to help you study. Accounting was actually my favorite class this semester thanks to him. Not that difficult if you study at least a week in advance.
Dick is a great professor. As long as you keep up with the homework, do all the bonuses and make the effort to go to the TA's if you don't understand something then you'll be fine. Might be a tad biased because I'm an accounting major. Loved his weird sense of humor and daily quotes. Also, never choose more than 5 "none of the above" on a test
I got a D- in the class. However, taking Accounting with Dick was a life changing event that I feel every UConn student should enjoy.
Richard was an amazing teacher, the material isn't easy, but it would be impossible if you took it with another professor. He cares so much about his students and wants everyone to succeed. He made this class one of my favorites all semester, and I loved going to class.
Kochaneck is a great guy, and he really wants us to learn the material. However, the class content builds on itself, so you really need to make sure you understand the basics. This course requires 110% of effort and relies heavily on your own studying and learning outside of the class period.
The class isn't whats important here. It's a difficult class, so study a lot. The main point is that D!ck Kochanek is a legend to UConn Students and Alumni. He truly is a career builder in the sense that you can use simply his name to network with any alumni that ever went to UConn. You must take him or you're missing out on a UConn tradition.
This course is really hard and the tests are very difficult, but he makes it worth it to go to class. He will make your day every day with his stories and he does curve the exams and give major opportunities for bonus points on tests. A lot of TA availability if you need extra help, you just have to work hard to get a good grade.
KOCHANEK IS PHEMOMENAL. Dont listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. Yes his class is hard but if you go to every lecture, really focus and do the homework it is totally possible to get an A. He is so sweet and so funny, I haven't met another professor who is so passionate about teaching. Take this course, its a wonderful experience.
I'll be completely blunt - this is a weed out course. Many smart, average students aren't ready for the course and all of the constant readingwork it demands. There's 3 exams (including the final) each worth 100 points, with up to 12 extra credit points. Exams are extremely difficult. Take this in the summer or avoid it if possible. Nice guy tho.
Richard is a good guy who tells some off-topic stories. His tests are difficult, but fair if you study a lot. If you don't go to class you will not do well; about 10 percent of the exams are things he only says in class. If you sit in the front, pay attention, and study, you should do well!
Kochanek is the man. His tests are hard, but his class is really interesting. He's super organized and is always prepared.
Possibly the best accounting professor in all of UCONN history. Make no mistake, his exams are not easy and you will have to work hard for an A, but the man truly cares about his students. His ability to teach and make interesting a subject that is typically dry through his comedic life experiences makes every class worthwhile and inspirational.
Horrible professor. He does not let you move any exams (so if you have to miss one for severe reasons your final counts as 60% of your grade). The only grades in the class are 3 exams all worth 33% of your grade. So if you do badly on one, you can't really get a good grade. Also, bad about meeting students or helping them.
He's very passionate about the subject. You have to really pay attention and stay focused in class. There are bonus problems and TA hours every day in business school. The professor himself does not meet with students outside of class. Very hard exams. People drop this class and class average around a C. Nicely provides us handouts to learn.
Here is alittle bit about 2001, Kochanek is a really great guy who knows his stuff. But don't think it is an into course it is very difficult. Your grade is made up of 3 multiple choice exams where it's A-E (E being none of the above) and by far the hardest multiple choice I've ever seen. Do well is possible but really REALLY tough.
Amazing professor. One of the best I've ever had in 4 years at UConn. Do the readings and the work he tells you to do and you will do well. Just don't fall behind.
Really great professor, one of the greatest I've had. Having said that the class is definitely hard and a weed out class for potential business majors, as the test are really tough. There are a lot of resources available however still tough. Just go to every class and do the homework and you'll come out with at least an 80
Dck is a great guy - very funny and just a wonderful, caring person. However, his lectures are very hit or miss. Either you understand everything and get an easy A or you get confused and get a B/C if you try. Isn't always clear during lectures - says "Do you see this with all your heart?" after explaining something. He's retired now though.
He is a legend at UConn. To put into words the experience that I had would be impossible. No one can live up to his legacy. He gets the chili pepper rating in my opinion because he is the only man in this world who can pull of business casual and Nikes
He's a great professor. Yeah, the class is a lot of work, but if you most of the things he tells you to do, you'll be fine. His lectures are clear, but his tests are harder than what you do in class. You have to understand things at a conceptual level. You can't fall behind or you'll get lost. UConn will miss him!
This post is pretty much useless since Richard is retiring, but I would still like to put in a good word as he was an amazing professor. His class was tough and he expected a lot, but he was an inspirational and thoughtful individual. It is unfortunate that no other year will experience his class and I applaud his contribution to UCONN.
He was by far the best professor I will ever have during my undergraduate career. This man really made me love accounting, and gave his students all of the resources necessary to be successful in his class as long as you put the hours into it. He is going to be truly missed within the UConn community!!
LEGEND.
