hes not a very understanding professor. i had a few deaths and a major illness and he still failed me.
Hated the class!! He wasn't very nice or patient and he made everything more difficult than it needed to be.
I would never recommend this teacher to anyone who has a hard time understanding Chemistry. He is not helpful and answers your questions with questions, giving you more questions.
I really didn't enjoy this class at all. Science isn't my strong point, so I was hoping something like Physical Science would be easy. Whenever he talks I feel like I'm in a different universe, and labs to me seem hard, unless you are with other people. He posts assignments and quizes online, and you sometimes forget they are there.
really bad teacher, doesn't know how to teach, we hardly ever used the book. labs were long and useless to learn anything. the chemistry part was the most difficult. you need a good basis on physics and chemistry to do well.
Knowledgeable, but very difficult to work with.
LOTS OF WORK
I got along well with Professor Lahti. I found him to be pretty clear in teaching this course. We did a lot of stuff with online postings and quizzes, but none of them were too difficult. I never really saw him outside of class, but he was approachable after each session. Be prepared for his class. Not really one to take for slackers.
Worst professor in my experience. During lectures, he talkes over his students with multiple akward silences. He writes condescending notes on all returned assignments. Quizes will nip you where it hurts.
Hard and demanding but makes learning interesting
He is not very helpful at all and pretty much everything in class is busy work which sucks because it is a 300 level class that you really shouldn't be getting that much busy work. Like 7 assignments due in one week?!?! Yeah, we have other classes too buddy!! If you are ONLY taking this class then its fine but don't plan on having any others!!
The writing intensive designation for this class definitely increases the amount of time required each week, but aside from that, Professor Lahti is fairly flexible and willing to help you when you ask him.
This was my hardest class so far. He is so hard to understand and he gets mad if you can't understand something. It's a 100 level class, but he teaches it like it is 300. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Take any other professor possible. You have 4 assignments a week ( pre lab, lab, post lab, and post quiz) PLUS lecture. He is VERY rigid on grading and not understanding at all. Will fail you, even if your only .5 % away from passing.
At first I thought he wanted to see his students do well. Yet in the end you find that he could honestly care less, and enjoys it if you do poorly. DO NOT TAKE HIM YOU WILL REGRET IT!
Mr. Lahti originally gave the impression that he was going to be a good teacher. My first assumption was wrong. He has a bad temper and is not afraide to show it. He was easily irritated when people asked questions. He made things more complicated than they needed to be. Do not take it if you want to enjoy your science class. Luckily, i'm done!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! When I would ask questions he made me feel dumb. He would constantly call me out in the middle of the class to point out something stupid I did. He wasn't helpful at all. HORRIBLE!!
This class with this professor is EVIL. Don't expect to get by with the bare minimum on your assignments. When he says what he's grading on, do about 100x more if you want a decent grade. He's not helpful most of the time, he has a bad temper, he talks down to students, and overall I hated the class because of it.
Hands down worst professor EVER! Very condescending! Makes things way more complicated than needed. Grades very unfairly. Gets irritated when you question the way he does things, grading procedures, etc. When you email him he turns into a complete jerk. I would never recommend him to anyone!
For being a "professional," he is very immature when you question the way he does things. Even told me he wasn't going to talk to me anymore in an email because I was questioning his grading. He picks out people and treats them unfairly based on the fact that he doesn't like them. I really don't know how he was hired by MSUM.
I found Prof. Lahti to be a good lecturer: he was interesting and made the connections between subjects clear. I believe that if you show him that you are trying in his class he will make every effort to help you. "Environment and You" sounded like it was going to be a drag, but I ended up enjoying it because of this professor.
I took his online class, the Environment and You. It's a lot of work, but it's not very hard. The only way you could do bad is by not asking him questions! If you don't ask questions the class will be hard.
This guy is an awesome Prof. He really understands environmental issues and is a brilliant guy. He challenges the class to think critically about issues and keep biases out. Take this course and you will work hard--but hey you get to knock off 2 in 1 dragon core.
I have thought LONG AND HARD about this professor, and will explain exactly how I feel about him. Professor Lahti is a ****, as you may find out. There is A LOT of work to do in his class. He stands out because he actually WANTS you to learn, and takes writing conduct above almost all ENGL professors. Doesn't like suck-ups, but enjoys a quick talk.
This guy is a horses behind and that's the bottom line. Avoid at all costs unless you like dealing with pompous pricks.
He is very unhelpful and grades based on who agrees with his opinion or not. He has no concern for students feelings or their success in the class. He grades too harshly and believes his way is the only way, so in order to succeed in his class you must pretend he is always right, even though he usually isn't.
he is an ass even to students in his own major. He has no clarity in his grading responses. Just know that even if you ask for help, you wont get it. Instead you will be ridiculed.PS i did report him to the dean, hopefully he will be gone soon
I did not have a strong science background, but if you work really hard, you should be able to pull through with at least a B. I took it because it was a 2 for 1 deal for dragon core. Lahti as a professor is one of the worst you could have. You can tell he gets frustrated easily and has no tolerance for people who are not chemistry geeks.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. I took the class for dragon core & thought it may also be interesting, but Lahti is a terrible professor for the course. He doesnt explain any assignments, and makes you feel like an idiot when he grades your work. He doesnt care what your opinions are because "he is always right." Dont take his class!
There are apparently people on here who really don't like Lahti, I wont lie, he does make you feel like an idiot when you ask a question. But he really wants you to learn the material and I feel like I've learned more in this class about physical science than I ever have in the past. Its a lot of work but not terrible (phys science is phys science)
horrible horrible horrible!!! never ever take his class! He is the rudest person I have ever met. Nothing is ever good enough no matter how much time and work you put into class. Some of his rude comments even made me cry.
Just awful... never take him he is a big A-hole and will not help you with anything ever. The labs are hard he makes you feel stupid and this is a 100 level class.. what bull.. You have to do a bunch of crap that is not even in the MN standards. DUMB DONT TAKE HIM EVER IF YOU CAN HELP IT!!!!
it has only been 2 weeks and i already hate this class. his online quizzes are hard, i used every available resource to find the answers and i still failed the quizzes. i don't even want to say anything in his class because he will make you feel like an idiot. but i have to say he does know a lot about the subject he teaches
Hardest teacher I've ever had in school after 4 years. His quizzes are really tough (even though you can take them several times but you'll need it). He makes you feel dumb when asking questions. I just can't believe how hard this class is for a 100 level class.
Super tough - I felt like I should have a Master's by the time I finished it, but I learned more in that class than I did in all of my other classes combined...
I was very intimidated by reading his ratings. Isn't a slack class like some may expect. Nor will he just give you the answer you're looking for. However, he's very helpful and just wants you to learn the material (makes sense as you'll be teaching the material) Was great as a summer class, would be easy to fall behind in the regular semester.
Very tough to please him. He is never satisfied with any of the answers you provide. His expectations for papers are very very high. I was in tears and super stressed. You do not get credit for working hard on your paper. If one of his criteria is not met, he won't read further. You will end up with a zero. I am glad I withdrew.
He is very tough and makes you feel stupid. The class isn't too hard but he makes it hard to enjoy. He has unrealistic expectations of his students.
Lahti is a straightforward guy. Important to know that he is very sarcastic, not mean. He knows what he is teaching and holds high expectations for his students. He will help and re-explain things to you if you need. Just go to lecture and it will help you out alot! The Labs are actually interesting! Don't let others judgement on him cloud yours.
He has ridiculous expectations. Although he claims he will accept your opinion, he criticizes you to the point where you dont even want to care anymore. It is just shy of impossible to recieve a good grade in that class. I for one asked for help multiple times and all he did was mock me and make me feel stupid. Good class, awful professor.
He is nice if you know what you are talking about otherwise he makes you feel really stupid.
This class was incredibly difficult. I took it because I needed a writing intensive course, not a degree in enviornmental science. Lahti is very knowledgeable, and he sure likes to remind you of it. The two papers are killer. It is a doable class if you have a lot of time to devote to it. Don't take it unless you have to(or you have ambition)
Lahti was very helpful. I do not agree with the comments stated previously, because as far as I saw, he just wanted everyone to succeed in his class and do their work. He responds quickly to e-mails and wants to help anyone out who is actually trying in his class.
Test is too long for time given, acts as though the class is a 400 level class, acts as though the students questions are dumb
Overall, I don't mind Lahti. I can see how some people wouldn't, but that's probably because they don't show up to class or don't understand his frustrations. He can be condescending but I feel like it's warranted. If you can't do simple things that we learned in the first week of class by the midterm, that's on you. He offers help, you need to go.
He makes you feel dumb when you ask a question. He expects you to know what you're doing before it is even taught. He basically said one day our Gen Chem 1 class has no potential when we were talking about potential energy. The only way I'm passing this class right now is from my experience of high school chemistry. Don't take his classes!
He knows what he is talking about, but he is not good at explaining the steps of how to get to a solution.
The most terrifying, and rude professor I've ever had. I have tried asking questions, and he only makes you feel stupid. I would never take a class from him again. The amount of tears and anxiety I got throughout this course was outrageous.
Lahti explains all the material in his lectures, but doesn't always explain it very well. Many of the examples and topics for the tests are taken exactly from the lectures, examples, and practice homework questions. If you don't put in any time outside of class, you probably won't pass. It's a tough class.
Lahti knows what he's talking about, and sometimes gives the impression he gets annoyed with lower level chemistry courses. That being said, he knows his stuff so if you pay attention and go to class you can learn a lot. There are practice exams and he does go over the exams the next day in class. Checks his email and tries to answer student ?s
Bring a tough skin to class; he takes you down a notch each time you ask a question. He's at times rude, but obviously knows the subject matter. Smart guy, just not cut out for teaching or is too burned out (maybe he was less jaded at one time, I'm not sure). I will definitely be avoiding his classes in the future.
I think only certain kind of people will like this professor. It was a tough class but if you ask questions, do the homework, you can pass. You shouldn't just go up to him and ask for the answer. Understand some content at least. If you feel disrespected, suck it up or get a tutor at least. His sarcasm is horrible but it was amusing.
Lahti is fantastic, don't get me wrong. He is always willing to help and like it or not but he is sarcastic and it is funny!!!!! Just don't take it offensively. It is all in how you look at it.
Lahti is definitely knowledgeable of the subject, but be prepared to feel like an idiot in his class. He has a way of putting students down when they ask questions. Just have a tough skin and ask questions anyway, otherwise you will not do good in his class. I'm a 4.0 student and BARELY got a B in his class. It's a LOT of work for a 1 credit course
This is by far the worst professor that I've ever had to work with. He constantly belittled students and used any excuse to gloat over his own intellect. The fact that he teaches students how to teach is ironic. I did well in the class, but it was painful to watch him put down other students.
I have been in his class for 3 weeks and it's already gotten to be too much. I literally have never taken a class where so many things get assigned. I only took this class for the goal area 10 and I regret everything!
This professor is downright rude. When you mess up, he doesn't use constructive criticism and tears you apart. He tells you you don't understand anything. He just thinks he is superior to you because he's the professor - but, any professor that treats his students the way he does isn't superior to anyone. 0/10 do not recommend him.
RUDE.
Avoid at all costs!! Disrespectful and I literally learned nothing from his class.
He is extremely arrogant and feels because he is the professor he is better than his students. He does not take into consideration that students may get confused by his explanation of an assignment and when questions arise, he feels it is out of laziness/stupidity on the students part rather than his own lack of understanding and explanation.
STEER CLEAR OF THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. 1)Hes the most arrogant professor Ive ever had to deal with. 2)Doesnt care about you or the issues that you may face with his assignments 3)Be ready for him to call you naive for wanting better things in the world. Thought this would be an awesome class, I was very wrong. This class is not worth it!!
Dont take this class. Professor is arrogant and basically calls everyone stupid and lazy. Not professional at all. He assignments are confusing. I have no time for someone who has no self accountability. Im busting my tail to try to get a passing grade. Very disappointed. If I treated my employees the way he treats us I would be unemployed.
I 100% regret taking this class. What a horrible, condescending professor. There is WAY too much homework and things he expects you to know in an ENTRY LEVEL class. I am fuming right now because he expects you to learn so much from his super long lectures and then do his impossible assignments. He deserves to lose his job.
class is an online class over the span of 3 weeks. Copious amounts of homework are expected every 3 days (yes the weekend counts as those days). Very content heavy and tough at grading, has high expectations for such a short period of time. Feels like I am just regurgitating information instead of learning. Do not reccomend.
Avoid at all cost. He's a worst professor ever during my entire life time. Expect your one credit non-major one credit class being tougher than your 300-400 classes. He doesn't care whether you fail the class or not
Definitely a professor that will not coddle you and thats what I loved about him. Made you work for the answer to questions you ask him, won't just give them to you. Class difficulty was what I expected, LA was very helpful and Dr. Lahti moved between classrooms frequently to answer questions. Effort required to do well but not an insane amount.
Worst professor I have ever had. Rude. Does not care about students success at all. Will not be proven wrong even when he is. Very arrogant. Should not even be teaching.
Professor Lahti begins his course with a very defensive tone indicating each semester he spends an inordinate amount of time arguing with students over late, incomplete or assignment grades. This course requires some serious dedication and willingness to jump through hoops. I didn't put in the effort. This is the only course I have ever failed.
Literally the worst professor I've ever had. He never gives you clear instructions on labs and yells at you if you do them wrong. His exams are grading very poorly. He is never available for extra help. He is also super passive aggressive with everything he says even emails.
This was one of the most rigorous science classes that I have taken. It is up to you as the student to make your grade and find ways of understanding the course material. He can be ruthless but ask questions and make sure you understand the big ideas from lab. He loves to banter it makes class fun. Show up. Learn the stuff don't rely on google.
Horrible Professor. Very passive aggressive and rude towards students. Tests are incredibly difficult, F being the average for most exams. If you have the option not to have this Professor, take that option
I love Lahti, he genuinely cares about his students. His test are hard, and showing up to class matters but he is always willing to explain. He might seem tough but thats because he wants you to understand the main concepts of the ideas.
This professor was not kind when responding to emails about serious questions within the course. I took this course as a 5-week summer online class which I understand means that it will be packed in, but there was limited to no directions for assignments and he was not very formal or professional when responding to my serious questions.
Very strict grader. Show up to class, I promise you'll be more confused if you don't. Pay more attention to the problems from class than the outside class work as far as studying for the test goes. He has a very dry sense of humor and can occasionally be easily 'triggered' but he is a nice guy if you can crack him.
Dr. Lahti gets a bad rap when it comes to his teaching. He does care about your education, and he does want to work with you. You just gotta work with him also. He means well, he may seem, sound and look intimidating. But he is pretty cool once you get to know him. Even though my grade is low. I still enjoyed the class.
Lahti seems intimidating at first because he likes to get down to business as well as simply tell you how it is, however he truly does care about his students and means no ill intent. Don't be afraid to ask him for help. I have stayed after class many times to ask for clarity on a few topics and he was very helpful each time.
Professor Lahti is a great instructor and cares about his students. His class is fun and engaging even if you don't like science. If you participate and don't get lazy, you will do just fine!
Lahti is incredibly rude, and often tells students to "get over it". If you do well on assignments he tells you you're "over the top" and "unnecessary". Responds to questions rudely and gets frustrated when you don't understand. Speaks very harshly and HATES when people take notes on computers and regularly calls them out. Wouldn't take him again .
While Lahti may seem intimidating at first, he is a teacher that truly cares about your success. He will not hold your hand through the course or help you "grade chase" but his style of teaching is supportive and helped us learn to have some independence with learning. The class may get frustrating, but in the end you become a way better student!
It was just an introduction to the MSUM honors program, really easy and more-so just a FYE class. Lahti himself is pretty cool though.
This professor is demeaning and focuses on student's wrong doings than offering constructive feedback or looking at his course structure. His course structure is confusing and with unclear instructions. The feedback that he provides is harsh and can be discouraging rather than constructive.
His grading was awful, or his feedback with his grading I should say. He was so mean and degrading in his feedback. I have never had a professor so mean in my life. He would say stuff in his feedback that didn't even pertain to what he taught you that you were “awful” at. I think maybe he thinks he's being funny, but it isn't working.
This was a very assignment heavy class. WOULD NOT TAKE AGAIN. If you can choose a different professor.
This professor has a very I am right and you are wrong mindset, he grades things very harshly and doesn't post information on assignments. He's very judgmental and doesn't respond to emails or asking for help. I do not recommend
