Best Prof ever! Values the opinions of every student, encourages discussion, does not think he is better than everyone else and does not pretend to know everything. Would take any class offered with this prof! Looooove the accent and the humour!
the guys british and goes off on his book he wrote for the whole semester
I sort of enjoied this class, depends on the day. Some lectures were boring but probably important, I got some of the easiest essay marks of my life, and he's great at encouraging discussion and getting you involved. The accent's fun.
i did not enjoy his class at all, he ignored school policy to fail me and is just not a nice guy. yes he encourages discoussion but it is only ever with one or to people in the class, and he clearly favors them.
went out of his way to be an ass. He gave the same mark to me and another person who I sat beside when she clearly did a fraction of the work I did and had red marks all over her paper and he told me that everything I did was. I confronted him about it and he ignored me, what a bad person!
I found him to be intellectually stimulating. He doesn't tell you what to think, he allows you to form your own opinion as long as you have done the work to back it up.His class is not easy, it requires you to be your own person and form your own thoughts. do take it if you want to enjoy english for the first time ever.
AWESOME TEACHER!!!!! I loved his class, the group work that we did, although I knowsome people didn't like it at all!!!!! But i DID. By the way he is REALLY HELPFULL, UNDERSTANDING...etc too. If I could take any course with him again I TOTALLY WOULD!!!!!
Richard was a great teacher. Stays on topic and unlike many ENGL 115 teachers actually prepares you to write university level papers. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and felt that if you were willing to put the effor into doing your work and concentrating he was willing to help! Will take many classes with him over the next four years for sure!
Good teacher, very intellectual, knows his subject well. Has passion for his work, and I plan on taking his classes again.
Richard knows his material well and he's very stimulating. Prepares people for real writing. He's handsome and funny too! And the accent doesn't hurt one bit ;). A bit egotistical but that's ok, he's earned it. Charming. Def will take his class again!
i found him to be very rude and demanding to the students...not helpful at all
Richard is one of the best profs at Mala. He's not an easy one, he'll make you work for your grade, but you'll come out a much better student as a result. If you're not prepared to work hard or if you can't take criticism, don't take the class. Richard is a gem.
I haven't had an amazing English teacher since Grade 10. I have not enjoyed this class at all. This is a tough teacher for a 1st year class compared to my other 1st year classes. I am taking it because I have to. Prepare for individual oral presentations.
Won't take his class again.
a really good teacher, very intimidating! spelling is a big thing in his class... I loved his class it is very worth while , get help during his office hours... hell have a new respect for you if you put in the time ! GREAT TEACHER
so tough.....
Hard.Mean.
I've taken a number of courses with Richard. Those who find him mean/intimidating are over-reacting; he has a decidedly British sense of humor and means nothing by it. Recommend him for serious English students (not 1st years!)
he knows his stuff
he is a great scholar, and is very helpful with research paper!
Richard is awsome. He is highly intelligent and very helpful. Would take all my English classes with him if that were possible.
Horrible teacher, so strict and very demanding for a first year course. Expects way to much and grades way to hard. Never hated an English class until i went into his class, and i have never failed an essay until his class. Avoid him!
I loved his teaching style, it was very in depth and critical. I would absolutely take another class with him.
Erratic teaching style. Demanding and unwilling to help his students. Incredibly mean.
Great Teacher, This course with this prof is what a university education is all about. Very knowledgeable, great teaching style. Learned a great deal about literature. He knows his material. He teaches the whole class. When you come out of his class your head is full. Loved his lectures. Would highly recommend for those who want to learn.
He is an excellent teacher. Inspires you to do well, pushes you to do your best. Had he not fallen ill, and stayed teaching our class, I am certain I would've come out of this class with an A.
Terribly tough and impossible to deal with as a first year student. AVIOD AT ALL COSTS.
Hard prof, but he really know his stuff. Loved his class this semester, I learned a lot and am now a much better writer. GREAT!
This guy is extremely quirky, very funny and sarcastic and I had a few good laughs in this class (at and with him). He is a very intelligent person and knows what he's doing! if you pay attention in class and attend, you will do really well in the course. just try not to skip ( i know its so tempting) he's a funny guy, just listen to what he says.
While I personally had no issues meeting the grading criteria, Richard's expectations for first year students seem high. He is very interested in a university level 'academic conversation', and as a result some classes were painful when not everyone else was up to speed. Demands a high standard of quality, and has a charming accent.
He's tremendously competent, and the only thing intimidating about him is that he's notably articulate. He challenges you to expand your abilities, as well as your thinking. He also encourages you to explore sub context. I found it amusing that the individuals who expressed their displeasure with the class had spelling errors in their comments.
Horrible professor, completely unclear about assignments and treats you like your incompetent if you don't understand something. First years beware, if English isn't your strongest subject, avoid his course at all costs!
Richard is an amazing professor, and I am so glad I took his class. I was able to learn so much that I will be able to use in the future, and I think he's just a great guy. Will totally miss him, and his ability to inspire me to do better, and expand my way of thinking.
Richard is an incredibly insightful and articulate professor with an immense understanding of literature. As a result, however, it does seem he expects a little too much from first year English students. I was challenged by his observations, but learned a great deal as a result. Would recommend to hard-working individuals only.
Richard is an extremely insightful professor. He is in the research racquet, edits the books for his class, and will tell you where you need to be in order to excel in the academic community. He is not an easy A, but if you earnestly have interest in this world your research will be natural and he recognizes that. He's for scholars not for slackers
First year students, be prepared to write multiple large essays as well as do a 10 minute presentation in front of the class! Is a tough marker and expects TOO MUCH. Learned nothing...
I didn`t get what I wanted out of the class. Fairly easy marker, however comes across strict. Expect to spend a lot of time outside of class making sense of novels, handouts and lectures. I would recommend this proof for 2nd or 3rd year students as you do have to have an academic mind.
Seriously the best prof I have had my first year. He was so insightful and actually addressed real world issues while teaching us how to write essays. He is very sarcastic and has a unique sense of humour (probably not for everyone), but I found classes were always interesting. I would definitely recommend if you are okay with a decent workload.
Dr. Lane is a great professor. His lectures elaborate upon key passages and he takes time to clarify important concepts and words, often even getting into the etymology of it all. Many students will find him trying, but he is one of the best professors at the university. If you have a love of literature, theory, and philosophy, take his classes.
I did not have any idea in what to expect out of this class. Lane's class requires a lot of time invested into reading, I found that majority of my study time was devoted to his class. Expectations were rather high for a 1st year but I found that I had learned so much more than others because he pushed us to reach a higher level of understanding.
He's tough. His assignments are large. But if you want to actually learn something and stretch your limitations, even in first year, he is the professor for you.
If you are willing to put in hard work, then getting a good mark will be easy. His assignments are long, but he is clear on expectations and is happy to help in office hours. His lectures can be boring, but do benefit overall for the midterm and final. My writing skills greatly improved over the course because he really pushes you.
if you study hard, you can get high mark ! what we did in this course was really difficult but it was helpful !
Take this class if you have an academic mind. For that he's the perfect professor!
Richard is a brilliant professor and I really respected him He is a tough marker, and wants his students to put the required time into assignments, but you will be a much better writer/ student after taking his class. He is very helpful during office hours, and helps brainstorm idea's if you are struggling with class work. He is British and funny!
Wouldn't take a class with him again, and wouldn't recommend people take a class with him unless really necessary.
Richard is a very smart man and he knows it. He is not afraid to tell you just how bad your thesis statement is in front of everyone, but will always give you help if you ask. Definitely a tough marker, but if you write down his theories and apply them in your essays, you're golden. Very funny guy. Expect lots of reading, analyzing and responding.
Definitely would not recommend taking a class with Richard unless absolutely necessary. He is a very tough grader and is not afraid to be harsh. Regularly told the class we would fail. Quite rude to be honest. Also would not recommend taking his class if you don't have a laptop/tablet as he relies heavily on technology. Lots of essays for 1st year
To be honest, not a good TEACHER - by that i mean he is a genius and knows his stuff; but cant teach. For some reason he didnt like me, and made it clear to the world. Harsh prof to every student in front of everyone. Will never take his class again. Although, if you keep your head down and work hard, it wont be too bad. Was quite dissapointed
One of my favourite professors at university so far. I found his lectures very interesting and as long as you apply the concepts you learn in class to your papers you will do well. His sense of humour is very sarcastic and sometimes harsh which some people don't enjoy, but i found him to be quite funny, nice, and helpful as the semester progressed.
Richard is a bright man. Unfortunately, he is also socially incompetent, disrespectful to his students, and incredibly self-absorbed. The point of Richard's classes are, well.. Richard. Do what he says, exactly as he says it; don't question him, agree with everything, and keep your head down. Or be smart and just don't take his class to begin with
Richard is a horrible teacher & a horrible person. Very disrespectful & coming from a student who usually got high marks in English. I was shocked how hard he was & how awful he is.
Richard was a wonderful professor. Although he was very strict on his students I found that he did a good job preparing us for Eng 125. He's also super sarcastic so you don't take his jokes personally.
I have no idea about what he wants to do for the paper. I have many courses this year, so I don't have much time to write a whole long paper for just the beginning of the class. Be smart guys!! Don't waste your time and money on his class. His class was really really hard compare with other first year courses.
Worst prof/teacher I've ever had. I am a good student and have never come across a person so disrespectful and with such a high opinion of himself
Richard does not understand how to teach a first year class as he is insanely tough and does not fully explain himself. failed multiple students in front of the entire class.
Richard is smart when it comes to English, but has no social skills. He made it clear on who he liked and didnt like in the class in front of the class. He is very harsh and can be rude. I enjoyed English till I took his class. I would not take this class unless you really need it. You must also be able to stick up for yourself.
Richard was EXTREMELY hard for a first year course, do not take this course unless necessary and be prepared to work your butt off if you take it.
Richard seemed to enjoy putting everyone in our class on edge. From kicking the entire class out for no real reason (just a hesitancy to speak as the material was very difficult and Richard has a tendency to mock students), to calling students down in front of other students, Richard did not create a conducive learning environment.
A lot of students thought they'll have an easy course like they did in the high school, but the reality is that this is university level now. Instead of trying to make excuses, show up and listen to his lectures because he literally gives you all the answers to his tests. Intelligent and often sarcastic, but those two go together very well!
Very good professor, often hated on because of his tough nature. I found that as long as you do the reading and do what is asked on his very detailed essay guidelines, you will do fine. You don't have to show up to lectures, but you have to make an effort to do well academically.
Im partial to Brits in any event, but have really enjoyed this class. Dr. Lane expects full participation and that is key to understanding the material. I found his teaching method very insightful. I heard he was a hard marker, and can honestly say he is more than fair as the guidelines are clearly set out for each assignment.
Gave out very long essay papers for homework but is a very easy grader..
Dr. Lane is not to be a proffesor. From events like bullying students in an open manner, to making them cry, to borderline harrasing them, Dr. Lane uses the element of class failure to threaten you into putting your best foot foward. Not the same way the norm of saying failure is a real possibility. His verbal assaults are very vicous. Stay away.
A polarizing professor, his class was both incredible and stressful. Although often hilarious, his sarcasm sometimes unintentionally hurts more sensitive students. Despite an atmosphere in the classroom occasionally bordering on fear, he is extremely helpful and gives great feedback if you're genuinely trying to improve your writing for university.
Had him for engl 115, a class that's supposed to be a base level university writing course, where you learn how to write a university level piece of writing. The whole semester the only time i was taught anything was one half assed lecture on citing in APA. The toughest grader i've had in university. In other uni classes i got B+ or A, in his a C-
Honestly the worst professor Ive ever had. Openly made students feel bad by going off about how the majority of the class is failing, his essays are RIDICULOUS, long and hard to write. As an English professor who DOESNT major in english, but philosophy, I felt this course was philosophy daily. If you see Richard on your class list, DROP IT FAST!!!!
Lane does not value the hard work of his students. I have read lots of comments from 1st-year students complaining that they failed. I am a 3rd-year student and I cannot understand his teaching criteria. He is difficult to contact, method is not clear, is hostile. I put the most work in his class and dropped it, other classes got As and Bs No Good!
Coming from a first year student who is majoring in English, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Unless you want to be ridiculed in class, marked with the least helpful remarks on your papers, or expected to understand extremely difficult concepts .He expects you to understand hard philosophical ideas as well as he does, and then write a 3500 word essay on it.
Richard's class is certainly a massive learning curve, and the key to doing well is attending every lecture, asking thoughtful but concise questions if you are confused, and being able to think abstractly. Richard seems to be able to tell when you are genuinely trying your best, and will always provide constructive feedback and clarity if you ask.
He bragged about failing half the class and refused to answer questions directly. Was taking it for my requirements a few years back but dropped out several weeks in because he was a nightmare. I recommend avoiding his classes.
I'm honestly not sure why he gets so much hate. Sure, he's a bit tough but he just wants everyone to do well. As long as you're following the grading criteria for any assignment, you'll pass. He won't necessarily force someone to participate in discussions but highly encourages it.
Honestly when I firs started this course I expected entry level first year course type work. Right off the bat we're reading and going from person to person in a lecture and did not understand a single thing, when I asked for a comment to be put in the chat he blatantly disregarded my asking. Would not recommend.
Dr. Lane's 115 class completely changed the course of my education and set me in the right mindset for the rest of my studies. He is polarizing, and to be fair around 3/4 of my class dropped before the half way mark in the semester. I stuck with it, and I still refer to his lectures and readings to this day. Comp Sci majors take this!
Half the time it seems he does not even know what he is speaking about. He will show his PowerPoint slides and then not even remember why he added the content he did. constantly saying "I'm not sure why I have this here" is NOT helpful for students!!! He is always going on tangents about random things, and he self-plugged his own $200 textbook.
Awful, would never recommend. Would tell people in front of the whole class if they failed the assignment. Over half the class dropped it after the first essay.
Not the worst grader, gave us a tough but manageable workload. He is teaching an online course yet is obviously annoyed by online teaching. Does not use text chat on principle, does not post lecture slides on VIULearn, & said it is intentional that if you miss lectures you will miss information, even though he cancels lectures often due to illness.
He's tough as nails, for sure and yes he will call you out for a wrong answer. Not nocely wither.... I like him though. He doesn't screw around and takes pride in his work. Drink some coffee and get ready to pay attention. His accent is deep but if you listen close, he repeats stuff when he's expecting you to take notes.
Richard is a very tough strict grader. Gives you letter grades, will fail you under a D. Richard is an old-school type of professor and he takes time and pride in his work. If you write in formal academic writing and cite properly, then you will do fine. He will do his best to give you the best grade possible as long as you attend his classes.
Though grader
Richard Lane is one of the worst professors I have ever experienced at VIU.
Personally I love Richard and his teaching style. Yes he is traditional but he does care about your education if you actually show up and put in the effort. If you get past the first essay you will be fine because he gives great feedback!
He always says he's an evil professor, and I don't want to take any of his classes again.
never take his class he is a terrible teacher and makes no sense. if you ask for help his response is rude and never clear
If your work has any sort of informalities, grammer problems, or mistakes he will fail you. I got through the first essay fine and thought that I was in the clear, but after I got to do the mid-term and he failed me I wasn't so sure. If you have any sort of disability i.e. dyslexia DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
personally, i really like him. he is traditional, and doesnt spoon feed students the answers. he is very helpful if you ask the right questions and his lectures are engaging and actually get you thinking about important course topics.
First draft I wrote for essay he said “you need a tutor”. no direction/advice given. spent hours correcting and rewriting, got a D. Went after class to discuss and he spent 30 minutes dissecting everything that was wrong, and told me “the only reason I gave you a D is because I didn't want you to drop out”. Gave no advice then walked out.
His lectures were horrifically bland and very hard to follow, at all costs DO NOT ENROL with him. After the first couple weeks only 5-8 people would come to his lectures. But if you don't come to lecture you will fail the course as he doesn't include major details to those online. He also made us spend money to take the midterm and final. 0/10
