quirky, eccentric guy who knows his monkeys. loves lemurs and any chance to mention them. easy class with 4 tests, all multiple choice. pretty interesting, no attendance policy. movie fridays. funny guy, easy material.
This guy is easily one of my favorite professors. I don't even like science and he made me want to go to all of his classes. He's really funny and definitely knows his material. Tests are straight from the power points (some are from the book but he will tell you). If you have the chance to have him as your professor do it. This guy rocks.
I am in love with this man. He's so funny and loves his job and what he teaches. Tests can be tricky if you don't pay attention to details (there are a lot!) but he's happy to help you whenever you need it. Unless he says so, everything on the slides matter. There are 4 tests and a final. Class isn't mandatory but he makes you want to go. Take him!
This man knows pretty much everything about anthro! Love him! Fun class, straight-forward exams, study and you'll do fine.
Prof. Lawler truly has the student's best interests (and GPA) in mind and you don't find too many teachers like that. Class material can be tedius (a lot of memorization) but is very clear about what you need to know for tests. I'm taking Anth 420 just to have him again next year...very hyper too - but perfect because you never get bored.
I'm pretty sure all the girls in my class are just a little bit in love with this guy. Amazing prof!
I love this guy. He's really smart and really entertaining. The material could be hard but if you go to class you'll get it. Lawler is a riot and will dance like a lemur for you. If thats not incentive to take the class then i don't know what is. seriously, you'll regret it if you take a diffrent class
Prof. Lawler is a great professor, but his tests are pretty hard. Study straight from the powerpoints and you should be fine, but they are still pretty tricky. Overall good professor
I absolutely love this guy. Amazingly entertaining, hilarious, and he cares about his students. His class makes me want to change to an anthropology major, he really made my semester awesome.
Dr Lawler, will you marry me? If yes, just don't say anything. Seriously though, Dr. Lawler is awesome! Take his class!
I want to bone this guy. He is pretty hot for a forty year old and he is very easy to talk to. Tests come straight from online powerpoints. Take his class, you won't regret it.
the best professor, and not bad on the eyes either
AWESOME. Makes really funny jokes and clear power points. you have to memorize alot of material for tests, but sometimes he curves!
Prof. Lawler is super legit. He's hilarious and he makes class interesting. This was my favorite class of the semester. Plus he's pretty hot. ;)
He is so amazing! Extremly nice, and he truly cares about his students. He knows his Anthro! You can't go wrong with this class! However you do have to study for the exams, just pay attention. He also gives answers for a couple questions on his exams!
TAKE LAWLER! One of my favorite professors--attendance not mandatory but its so funny, its worth going. He also gives you a few answers to the test if you show up. NO TEXTBOOK either! Hes also very clear about his tests: straight from the slides. Tests are easy, if you study. Totally recommend this class.
Not my favorite class, honestly. Lawler is funny and all, but the material is pretty dry. The tests require quite a bit of studying. Not a horrible class, but also not the easiest gen-ed.
Loved the teacher hated the class. Lawler is cool and keeps class as interesting as possible but your whole grade is based off of tests. If you aren't good at tests then don't take this. Personally not my favorite class but Lawler is a really nice guy.
Hilarious guy, but kind of difficult material. All his lectures are powerpoints and put online, but he gives test answers in class so you should probably go most of the time. Just study the powerpoints really well before the tests and you'll get a B at the lowest
One of the best classes I ever took. He is absolutely hilarious and he has movie fridays which add to the otherwise kind of boring subject. I would highly recommend this class to anyone.
EXCELLENT professor. After taking this class he had me considering declaring Anthropology. 4 tests plus a final. Go to class and take notes and put a good amount of time into memorizing and you'll do well. He makes class so interesting and will answer any questions you have. Go to the movie days b/c there are test questions on them. TAKE HIM!!!
Hands down my favorite professor yet. I love his class and the subject so much I'm switching my second major to Anthropology with a Bio concentration. Really entertaining, I looked forward to the class. If you show up to class, pay attention, and take good notes it is easy to do well in the course. (Also no homework and movies on most Fridays)
two words to describe him: f***ing. sexy. i'm obsessed with him. he made the class really interesting, he's a great professor, SO FUNNY, very helpful and clear. take him for sure.
This class is okay. Going to class isn't mandatory, and he lectures straight from his powerpoints which he uploads to blackboard. I thought the material was really boring, and while classes are easy-going, you do have to study for the tests! Your whole grade is comprised only of the tests which are 50 multiple choice.
Spends his summers in Madagascar studying lemurs with the natives. Down to earth. Great tattoos :) The material can be boring but not always. If you go to class the tests are EASY. I got at least 100 on every one just by paying attention. Curves grades. He is young and funny (relates to his students and tries to help us on tests).
I have trouble with the tests, but I guess I just don't study hard enough. You really have to know the material. But he's one of my favorite professors. He makes jokes and makes you laugh all the time. He tells awesome stories! You should definitely take him if you're taking this class.
Lecture sized class so attendance isn't mandatory. Reads right off of the powerpoint slides and posts them onto blackboard. If you are good at memorizing 1,000 facts for 50 multiple choice questions, then take him. Tests are multiple choice. if you get an 89.99999997 he WILL NOT give you an A-! Study a lot for this class and you will do just fine
Hes a really good teacher, nice guy and makes class entertaining. Attendance not mandatory but he pretty much gives u test questions every class so definitely go! I screwed myself missing so mny 9am classes. Ended up with a 79.99 which he wont round up...pretty annoying but i still recommend the class
Flash cards will be your best friend. Go to class, make flash cards based off the powerpoints, and you'll be fine. I was really close to getting an A, but he curved 3 of the 5 exams so an A- is better than the grade I would have received. Class isn't boring because he's funny and attractive.
very interesting, entertaining, and fun class to sit in. attendance isnt mandatory but its one of the few classes you want to sit through. you have to study for tests but everything on them is clearly outlined. overall enjoyable, TAKE THIS
Solid guy, really enjoys what he teaches, regardless of the content, Evo psych is a relatively new field and not without its criticisms, and he presents them very well. Recommended for anth major's upper level bio anth class. He does take from the book so be sure to read/annotate but otherwise easy A if you work for it
cool guy, boring class. you're in for a bunch of lectures about hominids and a lot of memorization.
He is a great professor and curves a few of the tests. Really review the slides or make flashcards and you will do good on exams. Be sure to go to movie days to get exam questions/answers. I would definitely take him if you can!
Great professor. Very entertaining, clear, organized and extremely funny. Enthusiastic about the subject. Tests arent the easiest but take notes and study and you will do fine. Highly recommended professor.
great professor. all lectures on BB, but you kinda have to go to class b/c he leaves test info out of the powerpoint that he tells you in class. grades are 4 tests and a final, with material straight out of the powerpoints. not very interesting material, but memorize it before the tests and you'll easily get an A.
Take this gened. He's a great professor. Doesn't require attendance (all lectures are on BB) but he gives you answers to test questions. There is a lot of material to memorize, but he makes it funny and at least tries to make it interesting.
Great Professor! I loved how interested he was in this material, he is super nerdy and really funny! I am not interested in the subject at all but really enjoyed the class! Definitely Recommend!!
I looked forward to this class every day. Lawler tells great stories and has awesome tattoos! He makes everything interesting. It's a lot of memorization, but as long as you learn everything, you'll do fine on the exams. He also gives a lot of exam questions in class. And there are movie Fridays! Definitely recommend this class.
Seriously, take him. Any anthropology class. He's hilarious, smart, and an all around amazing prof. Not easy (easier in GAnth 196), but if you go to class and memorize his powerpoints you'll be golden. He seriously loves what he does so if you love anthropology you'll love Lawler and you won't regret taking his class.
Lawler is my favorite professor to date. Besides being really passionate about the subject, he's funny, geeky, and really hot. Four tests, all multiple choice. Other than studying, no homework ever, and no textbook! No attendance policy and movies on Fridays half the time. I've recommended this class to all of my friends. Take it.
TAKE THIS CLASS! Lawler is one of my favorite professors so far. He is so positive and very funny. He made a class that could've been boring very interesting. If you show up to class and take notes, and actually study for the tests, you should get an A or B in the class. Definitely take it. You won't regret it.
This class has A LOT of content, but he tries to make it bearable. He's funny and absolutely loves what he is teaching. Super interesting class! Definitely take him!
One of the best professors I have taken at JMU. This guy makes boring information interesting. Tests cover a lot of information but it's all straight from the power points online
This is a good professor and he's really funny, but honestly if you don't have time or the effort to do a bunch of studying then don't take this class! I love he man but there is waaaay too much information on the tests. Every class there is 30 page power points..do the math. A LOT TO REMEMBER, and all of the info sounds the same!!
Lawler is amazing! Favorite professor at JMU! He's hilarious, and he makes the class interesting. There are 5 exams, 20% each to make up your total grade. There is a lot of info covered on the exams, but if you study you will get an A no problem! TAKE HIM!
He was a great professor. He was dedicated about what he was teaching and was very lively. He was enjoyable to listen to and isn't monotoned like some teachers. His tests required some work and studying but they are easy if you just follow his lectures, he practically gives you the answers. Definitely take him, he might make you change your major.
Professor Lawler is the best! I did not have much interest at all in bio antrho, but he made the information extremely interesting. Tests come straight from lectures. If you come to class and pay attention, an A is easy to receive. He doesn't even make you buy a textbook. I highly recommend taking this class!
Lawler is the most helpful teacher I've had! Not an easy class for me since I'm awful at memorizing, but he's super approachable in office hours. Very animated during lectures - GO TO THEM! Make sure you put time into this class, studying is important. If you have a knack for memorization, and want this class, definitely take his section!
Lawler is VERY helpful in office hours. I definitely recommend taking it for the science requirement as its just a matter of memorizing the slides. He's funny and entertaining for how boring the material is
It's not mandatory but you should go to class. The guy tries to give you all the help he can on the exams by giving questions in advance and omitted material from slides. He is all kinds of wonderful. Pretty funny and chill. Get it.
He's so friendly and really tries to make the material interesting. The TAs hold review sessions for every test and as long as you show up to class and cram the night before tests you'll get an easy A. He's really funny and posts the lectures online but you should go to class because he doesn't include all the information in the posted lecture.
Lawler is so funny! His class is really interesting but he moves a little fast through the material. Drops one of the 4 tests or final (whatever is lowest). Tests are kind of hard, especially if you do not have a heavy psychology background for this class.
Lawler is an AMAZING professor! He provides the information in a clear and interesting manner . There were only 4 tests and a final for the grades. There were no papers nor quizzes. He cracks jokes and tries to find ways to relate the info to everyday activities. He will occasionally leap/jump across the stage as demonstrations for the material.
He is part of the reason why I changed my major to Anthropology! He gives amazing lectures and tries to explain things so that every student will understand. No homework, quizzes, or papers. Gives demonstrations that can be hilarious! He explains things clearly. I would definitely take this course again! I'm sad that the class is almost over.
He curves the tests but the tests aren't something you can cram for the night before. Lots of specific questions but he makes sure to be very clear about what he's going to put on the exam. Hilarious and I would definitely recommend for GenEd or if you're looking for a fun class that's going to be challenging in a good way:)
Professor Lawler is the man. The class is lecture-style and your grade is based on five equal point tests. As long as you show up to class, pay attention during the lecture and study a little for the test, they are easy. He curves tests and often gives you several questions on the exam beforehand. Definitely take him if you can.
Professor Lawler is an awesome guy. He doesn't use a textbook, all information is on his powerpoints. There are only 4 tests and a final, but his tests can be tricky. Some concepts are confusing and difficult to grasp. His lectures are lively and entertaining, definitely worth going.
By far my favorite gen ed class taken at JMU. Lawler is hilarious and never failed to make his lectures entertaining and interesting. Super easy-- only 4 tests and a final exam, no textbook. Definitely can't cram for tests but at as long as you study at least 2 nights you'll be fine. LOVED HIM wish I could take again
I loved Lawler! He makes his class lectures fun, he is really passionate about the subject and it shows through his teaching. His tests can be a little tough if you don't study ahead of time but everything that's on the tests are straight from his lectures which he puts online, but you have to go to class to get some words missing from them.
Super fun class, kept lectures interesting, watched some movies. Only grades in the class were the tests, but if you show up and study a the night before you'll do fine. Jealous of my roommate taking it this semester, I would love to go back!
Professor Lawler is amazing! I thought I would hate bio anth, but he made is super fun. The course is a total of 4 tests and he curves all of the. It's a lot of memorization but if you go to him he will tell you what to study. The only thing is he won't round up your grade.
He's awesome! Very helpful during office hours! No attendance but he gives definitions that are not on posted lectures on Canvas and the definitions are usually on the exams, so go to class! He's really funny and super chill
Professor Lawler is awesome! He's very laid back and fun to talk to, but if you're not a science person the class will definitely require some studying. No attendance policy or textbook, and 5 exams make up your grade. Definitely one of the better Gen Ed options, take him!
Took for one of my cluster requirements. So glad I did. If you show up to class, take notes, and download powerpoints then you can get an easy A in the class. He was one of the funniest, nicest, and most personable professors I've ever had. Only have 5 test over the semester. If you need to get that cluster out of the way, take Lawler for ANTH196.
THE BEST PROFESSOR AT JMU. He is hilarious and easy going. A lot of people take is no attendance policy for granted and end up getting screwed. Just go to class and take notes, because he will tell you exaclty what to study for each exam. He curves and end up getting around 5 points added to every exam. I took it for my gened and I am sooglad I did
Lawler is one of the best professors ever! He's very enthusiastic and loves to teach. He's also very knowledgeable (he went to Yale) and tries to teach the class with passion for the subject, even though it's a little hard and not everyone's favorite. 5 tests with curves. I'm an anthro minor, so my answer might be a tad biased, but take if you can!
This dude is legit. He takes a class with very difficult material and presents it in a way where you are constantly engaged and learning. The class is by no means an easy A. If you don't show up, you will fail. Teacher is hilarious though, and you will WANT to go to class. No homework and 5 MC tests. Lawler's not bad for an Everton fan either :)
TAKE LAWLER! Best prof ever. He's so nice, hysterical, and not bad to look at either. Attendance isn't mandatory but you should go to do well because he leaves info out of the posted lectures. That said, this is one of those classes you'll actually want to go to. I got sad whenever it was cancelled. Just study, easy A. Wish I could take again!
Only grades are 5 exams that are super easy if you study at least the night before. He's a hilarious and captivating lecturer and made class really enjoyable. No attendance policy and he puts up all his powerpoints on Canvas, but leaves some important info. blank as an incentive to come to class. Awesome gen ed overall. Take him!
Lawler doesn't take attendance but, I would highly recommend going to class because not all of his notes are available on canvas. He's also just a really awesome teacher, he does a great job of making the subject matter interesting. Go to the review sessions!!
Professor Lawler is the best! Completed ANTH 196 summer session online course, and would definitely take again. Lawler understands that summer is busy for all, so he has taken extreme measures to ensure his PowerPoint slides are concise, and he doesn't ask his students to pointlessly read additional unnecessary materials or watch videos. Great!
Lawler is seriously the most amazing human, expect weird Dad jokes, a curve on every test and just random rants about his life. I loved his class, but the tests aren't easy, you'll need to study relatively hard.
Lawler is hilarious and is a great professor if you are not too interested in science. He is so funny and going to class is great because the lectures are never boring. He is wonderfully weird and teaches material well. The only downside is your grade in this class is completely dependent on test grades and there are 4 before the final.
Literally one of the best professors I have ever had. He is able to explain the course material and a lively and entertaining way. This guy is amazing!
Only Grade is 5 test, and attendance isn't mandatory, powerpoints are posted online but you need certain words from the lecturers. have to study to do good on the test, Otherwise Lawler is a really cool professor, makes class somewhat interesting
Lawler is pretty awesome. I took Anth 196 as a gen ed and I'm really glad I did. Even though I'm not a huge fan of science, the course content is interesting (for the most part) and Lawler is always animated so lectures are easy to sit through. The only grades are your 5 exams but I crammed the night before and did fine plus he curved every test
Lawler is hilarious and made me want to attend class. There's no attendance policy and he posts the lectures on canvas, but leaves out some information so you have to attend class to get it. I highly recommend this gen ed!
This guy is awesome. He gives really big curves, breaks the information down in an interesting and easy to understand way, and invests his whole self into his class. I have never seen a guy genuinely enjoy his students and their youth so much. If you study early, you will do more than great. His exams are straight off the powerpoints.
Dr. Lawler is fantastic. Really funny, engaging guy. The class itself can be difficult and your graded only on five multiple choice exams. If you study a reasonable amount you should do just fine though. Highly recommended!
Class is not mandatory but he tells you test questions throughout the lectures so it's an easy way to do good on tests, he curved all of them by a few points. Have to study a lot for the tests because it is all memorization but the topics are interesting and 5 tests are your whole grade. Very funny guy and cares about his students.
Everyone says that this class is ridiculously hard but I disagree. Didn't go to a single class before the third test and ended up getting a B+ on it. You don't have to go to class but you do have to study before the tests or you will absolutely not pass. Curves every test. No homework. Gave a test less than a week before the final.
Prof Lawler is hilarious and fair. The people who thought this class was hard are probably the ones who didn't study or come to lecture. He gives generous curves on every exam and even gives you half the questions on the final. Some of the material can be difficult but the test questions are very simple. Very easy A as long as you show up to class.
Lawler is hilarious. His lectures are entertaining but since he posts all his powerpoints online theres really no need to go to class, except there is usually a few test questions only from lecture. A lot of info but not hard to grasp just read the ppts a few times, and scan the chapter in the book and youre good to go for the test.
He is the best. Attendance isn't taken but you might want to go because he tells exactly what to study for from each powerpoint. He makes the lecture very entertaining and is a very cool and down to earth type of guy. No textbook!!
I was captivated by Lawler's passion for the topic. The information was genuinely interesting and he made the class (some parts were heavy in information) more accessible and understandable with humor. TAKE HIM TAKE HIM TAKE HIM!!! Definitely study for the tests, I didn't the first test bc I thought it was basic knowledge but I got a C.
Lawler is the boy. No textbook, no homework whatsoever. HOWEVER, you have to make sure to grind for tests, b/c the tests can be hard if you're not prepared/don't show up to class b/c he gives a couple answers for the test in class. Honestly pretty hard to get an A, but if you do well on the first test it's very possible. Super funny.
Lawler is the daddy. Curves every test and they aren't that difficult but you MUST study. As long as you actually study you can get at least a B/B+
If I could take this class again, I most definitely would. I always looked forward to Lawler's lectures. He's hilarious and the topics covered in the class aren't difficult, but you have to study to do well on the tests. (hint: look at the powerpoints he posts on Canvas) - but honestly Lawler is great, 10/10 would recommend.
Lawler is very fair and understanding. Your grade is made up of 4 exams and a cumulative final, which he gives you half the questions beforehand. He tells you exactly what you need to know for each exam and curves almost every exam. Easy and straightforward if you study the lecture slides on canvas.
Best class I have taken at JMU. Don't miss the opportunity to take him.
Lawler is an awesome due and his lecture are pretty interesting, and he makes you laugh. The class however is structured by 4 tests and a final, and the tests are really hard. All the content is posted online, but even with that it's not easy.
Lawler was AWESOME. No homework, no papers, no quizzes, no books, just the lectures and four tests. The tests are not easy and you definitely have to study hard for them, that said he curves every test and is a genuinely great professor. Showing up to the lectures definitely helps to prepare you for the tests. Would recommend especially for gen ed.
this man knooooows that most of us could care less about the subject so he makes it super simple. 5 exams that you NEED TO study for. I never went to class but I would study pre-made quizlets for a week in advance. I messed up on the first test which is what brought me down but I got 90+ on the rest. highly recommend for a gen ed
As an art major i was putting off my science gened and was glad I waited. Took the online summer may session and was the best decision. only 4 tests, he provides all the powerpoints and the questions come directly from them. If youre looking to get your genes out of the way, take the summer course with him you won't regret it
One of my favorite classes taken at JMU so far. Had almost no interest in the subject before taking the class but ended up loving it! No homework, papers, quizzes or any outside of class work ever. Graded on tests only but they are soooo easy if you study the powerpoints. Go to class because he will tell you test answers in class!
He is hilarious and is passionate about anthropology. You will take 4 tests and thats all the work for the class. He gives you all the information for tests word for word on ppts and posts them on canvas so you can access them from home. Attendance is not mandatory but he leaves out many definitions on the powerpoints so showing up will help you.
Lawler is a great professor but don't ever miss a class. He says he'll post the slides online and thats true to an extent. However, the most important material will be replaced by "SHOW UP TO LECTURE". He doesn't like electronics in his class so you better just take notes on absolutely everything and hope you got the important bits.
Second time I've had him. Best, most enthusiastic professor at this school. Very clear about test criteria, handful of pop quizzes, 3 short essays. Would recommend for anyone needing an extra elective. Put in some effort and you'll get an A.
If you dont show up to class, you will miss key vocabulary and definitions that will show up on the tests. Go to class youre paying for it.
Grade based on 4 tests and a final. He will curve individual tests but not your overall grade. Even if your final grade at the end is an 89.99, he will not curve to a 90. Lots of info to study but as long as you study ahead of time you'll be fine because the questions aren't that bad. Don't have to come to class but sometimes he gives test answers.
Super easy. Only 4 tests and a final, all weighted equally. Showing up to class isn't mandatory but he sometimes gives test answers and during classes where we watch movies, he will give us one test answer. Besides that, everything you need to know will be posted. You can easily find SHOW UP TO LECTURE material on google. No textbook
Lawler is a super cool teacher and he wants the class to do well. The content can be a little on the boring side, but he does a really good job of making it funny. The only downside is that there are only a few grades, but he curves very generously. He is also really understanding about conflicts outside of class and make-ups.
Loved Lawler. He's hilarious, charismatic, and interesting. YOU NEED TO GO TO CLASS: posted lectures are missing key pieces of info on test on purpose. Go to class, take notes, you'll do fine. No homework. No papers.
Lawler is super funny his lectures are cool to go to. Attendance isnt mandatory and he posts his slides online. You only have tests. Super cool guy would def recommend him.
Dr. Lawler is the best! There are 5 exams for the entirety of your grade but he curves almost all of them! The material is pretty boring but he tries to make it fun and is a nice guy! Class is not mandatory but it definitely helps when it comes to the exams, all powerpoints posted online, excluding some info that is most likely on the test. TAKE.
Proffessor Lawler was a good choice for ANTH 196. The material for the class was not particularly difficult, as long as you studied, and the grade is based off of 4 tests and a final. He is HILARIOUS. Always cracking people up while still explaining the material.
I never write reviews on profs but Lawler is the most caring and understanding man. He makes his lectures interesting, even if you arent crazy about anth. His main goal is for you to succeed and I think that is one of the best qualities a prof can have. Taking this class- youll leave with a different perspective.
This class was pretty interesting, but Lawler makes the subject even more enjoyable to learn! There are 5 exams, including the final, all of which are doable. GO TO CLASS, he gives you questions that will be on the exam and he explains things clearly.
My boy Lawler is the funniest professor I have ever taken. Dude is like the funny weird uncle. He posts all his powerpoints online so you never have to go. He even said that. He gives you exam answers if you go, though, and his lectures are interesting. 4 exams are the only grades. Look up quizlet study guides, because the exams are legit. TAKE HIM
Dr. Lawler was hilarious and made this otherwise boring class super entertaining. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he gives you exam questions if you show up. This class is very dense and there's a lot of material to cover, but Lawler makes it manageable. There are only 4 exams and a final the entire semester, but he curves. He's a great choice!!!
Dr. Lawler is hands down my favorite professor I have taken at JMU. He is so funny and caring and really makes you excited to come to class. There is no textbook, just letures which he posts online (he does delete a few words so you come to class). Graded on 4 tests and a final which are not super difficult and he curves each one. TAKE HIM!!
Dr. Lawler is my favorite professor at JMU. He is so fun and he really cares about what he is teaching. He makes you excited to come to class. He posts powerpoints with words missing so you come to class but it isnt difficult. Graded on 4 tests and a final and he curves each one! TAKE HIM!!!!
Lawler is definitely my favorite professor of this semester. He's super passionate about anthro which really translates in his lectures which are always entertaining and engaging even if the lecture topic is not. If you have the chance, definitely take him!
He's so awesome! the course is 5 tests the last one being the mid term and he gives you answers sometimes. If you read the lectures and take notes the tests will be easy. He is really funny and makes learning a lot easier!
Awesome dude, super funny, and great professor. Very engaging and knowledgable. One of my favorites that I've had here at JMU. The class was based off his power points and lectures, so no textbook. Grade was solely based on 4 interim exams and the final. Study the power points well and you can get an A.
The class is only test based but he makes the information so interesting. I would highly recommend going to all his classes or watching all his lectures because you will definitely learn some interesting stuff. Do study for his tests because they're not tricky and he gives you all the info for them in class.
Easy A made easier by the fact it was online. Watch his lectures take notes and you will get the grade you want. He gave us 40 questions from the final before we took it, which should give you all the information you need about Lawler. #babygoat
Dr. Lawler is a great choice for ANTH196. As someone who needed this class to simply fulfill GenED requirements, Lawler explained all students needed to know for the multiple choice exams in an easy to understand way.
Lawler is literally my favorite professor at JMU. He is understanding, hilarious, and really insightful and passionate about the material. There was no textbook and my grade was based entirely on 4 tests. As long as you go to his lectures and pay attention, you will pass the class very easily.
hes a great guy the only thing that bothered me was that the only grades are four tests, and no other assignments or extra credit so if u bomb the first text its hard to get ur grade back up
Very easy going professor. I showed up to two classes and got an easy A-. Just read over the powerpoints and use the study guide and you will get an A. The only reason I got an A- instead of an A was because I got a 75% on the first exam because I didn't know how he tests. I wish he would curve more.
THE BEST! Copy down the power points and complete the study guide (all of the answers come from the power points) and you will get a solid grade. Lectures aren't mandatory but I always wanted to attend, he is so knowledgeable and funny. Solid choice especially if biology isn't your strength, he doesn't expect you to know anything prior to class.
Prof Lawler is a great guy. I am not huge on science classes but his personality makes it bearable. The only grades are the four exams, which are tough but if you take notes and study the study guide you'll be fine. He also posts the lectures online so you don't really have to go to class. Boring class but a funny guy. He also curves the exams.
Your whole grade is based on 4 exams and there's no other assigned work or readings, so make sure you actually study a lot for them. I would definitely go to class because you'll do better on exams and he's a pretty cool guy. When studying for exams, don't only fill out the study guide but read through and memorize the powerpoints.
For this class your grade is based only off the exams, but its pretty interesting and Lawler makes the class very enjoyable. He posts all the lectures on canvas and it is very understanding!
The class itself is incredibly interesting and Lawler is a good professor- he's also pretty funny and makes it more interesting- but the grade is solely based on exams so unless you're a good test taker and know how to study, I wouldn't recommend it. I enjoyed it but also didn't do great because of how it's graded so do with that what you will
Lawler is the goat, he would always make us feel at ease before exams and his lectures were enjoyable. He seems to love what he does and cares for the well being of his students. We need more teachers like him.
Lawler is hilarious, so chill about his 196 course, and grades based only on 3 exams and a final. He gives you everything extremely clear-cut in his powerpoint lectures. You technically don't have to show up, but I highly recommend you do. He provides study guides to fill out and lets you know exactly what's gonna be on the exams. Take him!!
This is one of the hardest geneds I have ever taken. Without studying for a week straight for these exams it is impossible to do well. The material is all in the slide shows it is just so much material to grasp
Lawler is amazing. He is always cracking jokes in his lectures and you can tell he is really passionate about what he does. Gives us a lot of guidance on what will be on the exams and is easily accessible outside of class time for extra help. Would definitely recommend taking him!
Lawler is awesome and funny, and is super chill. The class itself was much more difficult than I expected. There is a TON of content to learn and only 5 tests for your entire grade. Going to class is a huge help because he just hands out answers. Don't underestimate the class. Was still a good experience tho
Prof lawler's class is really easy if you study for exams. I studied about 2 hours for each exam, and received an A on all of them. The exams are multiple choice and straightforward, and he curves all of them. Strongly recommend for an easy class.
Lawler is a great professor and a super genuine person, the material is just a lot to grasp and very confusing. He curves every exam and lets you know highlights of what to study, but the class is still pretty challenging...
Funny and charismatic guy. Really brings the subject to life. Lawler is probably my all time favorite JMU professor.
Our tests are open note which makes it so much easier to learn all the material, he gives study guides for exams which help a lot to organize notes. While attendance is not mandatory, I would recommend going because stuff in the slides in class are not posted. Easy grade, not much homework, just go to class and its worth it. Super nice and cool guy
An amazing interesting class! Anth 196 with Lawler was only graded on 4 tests, but the lectures were posted online (with a few test words ommitted for those who skip class). He provides study guides for each test that is pretty much just the exams format. No homework, exams online. But the lectures are really interesting and funny!
Lawler is a great and funny guy that makes lectures interesting. While the tests are online and open notes they are still 60 questions so still take notes and study. The information is a little difficult to understand at times, but if you put in a little bit of effort youll be fine.
This is literally the nicest guy. I absolutely loved this class because of him. He is really funny and tries to make class interesting cause he knows the material may be a little boring. You have 4 at home tests for this class which is really nice. The tests aren't too hard if you do the study guides!
Lowkey dilf ngl. Super nice and funny, tries to spice up class cause he knows it can be boring. Material can be difficult at times but he does a good job of explaining it. Only assignments are at home open note tests which are not too bad if you study
Absolutely amazing professor and guy. So passionate about what he teaches and has a great understanding of what his students will have more trouble with material wise and makes sure to take his time with that material. If you are taking this course, take it with him. Hilarious, personable, and wicked smart. 100/10.
Five online open note tests that were super easy if you just took the time to find the answers in your notes. Attendance is not mandatory, but he leaves out a few of the vocabulary words and definitions from the PowerPoints when he posts them on canvas that you can only get if you go to class. Lectures got boring sometimes, but super easy A.
Don't have to show up to class just make sure you copy notes from his slides on canvas. Tests are your only grade so make sure you do the study guide. Exams are at home online but are timed.
Prof Lawler is amazing! You are only graded on tests, but they are open note and if you take notes on the PPTs in class or that he posts online you should be fine! Attendance is not mandatory and all the notes he lectures on are on Canvas. This is an easy, low-stress class that is perfect for a Gen Ed.
Dr. Lawler is hilarious, engaging, and has clear grading criteria. 4 exams, 1 final, all open note. Lectures are interesting, boring sometimes, but all you have to do is go to class and you will get an A in this class. I also found the material very interesting, and I genuinely think he is so funny. Would def take for gened if you can.
Prof seems fine but the course itself sucked. 4 tests, 48 questions in 40 (he changed it to 45) minutes. Couldn't go back to a question once you submit it. It made the tests unnecessarily difficult. The course is also basically on a pseudo-science and I didn't personally find any of the material interesting. Would take an in-person class with him.
Dr Lawler is extremely understanding, helpful, and fun. This class is a super easy A, I'd definitely recommend this if you're looking for an easy gen ed. All tests are open note and online, questions are straightforward and based on the study material. I cannot stress enough that you should take his class.
This class was easy. Just lectures and tests and you don't have to show up but he purposely leaves things out in the notes online to make you want to come and you will suffer on tests if you don't. Only grades are tests and they are hard and confusing even though they're open note. But it's definitely an easy gen ed with no homework.
Dr. Lawler is a super nice and chill guy. Attendance isn't mandatory and lectures are posted, but he leaves things out of the posted lectures that are only mentioned in class. Exams are all online and open note. There was always a study guide provided. Exams were challenging despite being open note, but nothing too bad if you take good notes.
Class is not mandatory and attendance is not taken so this class is not a big time commitment. The exams are kind of tricky but overall for ANTH best professor.
He's such a nice teacher, but the only grades are the exams. He makes his lectures fun to listen to. The lectures aren't mandatory, but you will miss a few vocab words if you just rely on the slides posted on Canvas. Overall, super easy gen ed and he's really passionate about what he teaches.
This professor is so funny, and his lectures are actually enjoyable. The only assignments are 5 exams that are 50 questions and online. Attendance isn't mandatory. Very easy and enjoyable class for someone who procrastinates and hates doing work.
Great professor! Lectures are interesting, and while exams are challenging, Dr. Lawler provides helpful study guides. I found Unstuck ai really useful for exam prep. Easy A if you stay on top of the material.
The content is honestly pretty boring in my opinion, but he does his best to make it fun and engaging. Grade is composed entirely of four exams and a cumulative final. The exams are open note and he posts his lecture slides with some terms redacted that you have to get in class. It's not hard at all, just dull.
Lawler is such a great prof. He is very engaging in his lessons and adds in a lot of humor. Attendance is not mandatory but you should still go because every class he gives you answers to the tests that are not available on the lecture slides. There are 5 open note tests (your only grade) but they are easy as long as you go to most of the classes.
Dr. Lawler is actually one of my favorite professors I took. He understands that not everyone is in the class is here for an anthropology degree. Only grades are exams which seems bad but their open-note and take home. As long as you go to class and take notes you'll be fine.
he is super caring and fun to take. there arent a lot of grades so you do need to do good pretty much off the spot, but he curves by like 10-20 points and makes sure everyone passes. take him if you can, hard class turn learn but again- easy A.
Graded by four exams open note MC exams and a cumulative final. Lawler is a very engaging lecturer, but I would have appreciated a different type of assignment (maybe something written), since I'm not very good at MC, despite the open note aspect. The less I attended lecture, the better I did on tests, which was discouraging.
He just switched from open note online tests to in person closed note scantron. The mean was in the 60's for the first one. Only grades are 4 tests and a final. Very hard, lecture heavy class if you don't show up take great notes and devote a lot of time to studying you won't be successful. Good guy and teacher but challenging class for a Gen Ed.
Tests are inperson now, good guy but unless you already know about this subject do not take it, the tests are hard and thats the only think you are graded on
Lawler is a great guy, and his lectures are interesting and entertaining. The only grades in this class are exams, and there are 5 of them. For a gen-ed, the tests are difficult and there is a LOT of content you need to know, but he adds a curve. It's still probably one of the easiest science gen-eds, so I would take him
Take Lawler, this class is very easy and open-note. Even though attendance isn't needed I would still go because sometimes he blocks words from the slides online, plus he's just hilarious. I messed up and didn't take my 4th test and it would've tanked my grade but he was nice enough to let me retake for full credit (although I wouldn't recommend).
The reviews on this class say all exams are online, but this is no longer the case. They are taken in person and are very difficult. There is a very generous curve given for every exam, however the questions are often confusing and the tests are long. The lectures themselves are interesting and funny, but still challenging for a gen ed.
DO NOT TAKE FOR EASY A! I took this because in previous semesters this was an easy gen ed class that had online take home exams. He no longer does this, exams are in person closed booked. There are 5 grades the whole semester: EXAMS 1, 2, 3, 4 and the Final. DO NOT TAKE AS EASY GEN ED!
BEWARE do not take this for an ez gened credit!!! The exams are all in person and on paper and there are 5 exams which are the only grades in the class. The exams are not too difficult but I had to study for abt 4 hours to get a B but I didn't go to class besides the first one and exams, so take it with a grain of salt. DO NOT TAKE FOR EZ CREDIT!!!
AMAZING lecturer!! Super easy to listen to and hilarious. Attendance isn't mandatory, but super helpful. All lectures posted online with only some omitted material. Every exam is very generously curved and study guides are provided. The 5 exams are scantron, in person, but only take about 45 mins and can leave when finished. Would take again!!
5 grades, each worth 20%. Exams 1-4, and the Final. He wants you to pass this class, and brings the energy for it!
Professor Lawler is very passionate about what he teaches and tries to make every lecture interesting and engaging. Attendence isn't mandatory but there are terms that show up in class that aren't on canvas, so its beneficial to show up. Highly recommend!
Dr. Lawler is such a funny guy and it is clear he loves what he is teaching. Attendance is not mandatory but I do recommend going to class. His grades are only on 5 exams but in class he will give test questions and his study guides help a lot. I would take him over and over agian.
Richard Lawler is passionate about his craft and really loves his class. He makes it fun to come to the lectures, and he is funny. He really only has 4 exams, and then the final.
Prof Lawler is an awesome prof. He is truly passionate about what he teaches, which makes a world of difference in how I perform in a class that I'd otherwise find very boring. Exams are moderately challenging, but not overly difficult. I will say that is the only thing in his class that is graded, so make sure you do well on those! Cool guy :)
You have to go to lectures because he omits the most important stuff from the slides but easy if you do
ANTH196 itself can be boring if you're not really a biology (or monkey) person, but Professor Lawler is passionate, interesting and tries to make the course as easy as possible. Ends lectures early, gives study guides, curves every test. Slides omit information, so go to lectures as much as possible, but if you take notes and study it's an easy A.
This is a great course, he's very nice, & lectures are easy to follow. The only grades in this class are the 5 exams, but he curves them generously. He doesn't take attendance, but go to lecture because he will leave out important terms from the posted slides that are guaranteed to be on the exam (plus you'll actually learn something!)
This class was amazing!! Prof Lawler was amazing! The class is test heavy and the tests are difficult but he curves the tests around 10-20% each exam. No homework and lectures are fun!
Professor Lawler was a great professor for a gen ed anthropology class, made lectures interesting and curved all of the exams by a lot
