Great person, great instructor. Rick is very entertaining and makes boring information intersting!
Really nice person, really knows his stuff. I found Rick to be easy to talk to, generous with his time, and fair with grading. Lecture can be tangental, but it is usually interesting. I'd highly recommend taking his class.
Very interested in what he teaches and is straight forward on what he expects. Does go off topic quite a bit but always comes back around. Take his classes, be patient and it will all make sense eventually. He makes you think.
His class was okay, but I hate that he takes attendance and then lectures on and on about things that will not even be tested on! If he's going to force us to be there, then I recommend that he stay on topic. Other than that, he was a pretty fair instructor and although I would not specifically take a class because of him, I wouldn't avoid him.
He makes comming to class fun and exciting. He is hilarious. He seems to care about teaching, always wanting to hear what we have to say. I love this class. Must take it! And he is kinda nice to look at...
He is a lot of fun! He made this my favorite class for the term. All of my other classes are science classes, so I was glad to have him for a teacher. Definitely will take another class with him!
I LOVE THIS MAN he is an amazing teacher and if you get the chance to take his class its wort it because he has such a passion for making sure you learn the necessary information! highly recomended
Take his class if you can he is an awesome teacher. He is really passionate about his subject, interesting to listen to and knowledgeable. I would absolutley take a class from him again!
He went off topic a lot. A LOT. A LOT!!!!!!!!!!! His ego is very inflated. He does want students to succeed. He hangs out with a bunch of students after class....perhaps to recapture his youth. I'd do him.
Dr. Lockwood is awesome! He expects his students to be thoughtful and make intelligent connections. He's very insightful and a fun professor.
Fair class, possibly taught more about what he wanted than what the class was for. I liked it though, and would take another of his classes. I learned a lot more than I thought I would in this class.
Rick Lockwood is the best teacher I've ever had. I'm borderline in love with him.
Richard is one of my best teachers at PSU he is down to earth and respects minorties alot .. dont hesitate take his class and you will love it.
Hr'd phenominal!
Rick is the best professor I have ever had. I have yet to meet someone who didn't love his courses. He is very fair and wants his students to do well. He is very personable and is willing to help with out of class projects. Def. worth taking his class.
If you're ok with having liberal views pushed on you then this would be the right teacher for you. If you'd like to think for yourself then don't take him.
Recognizes hard work and effort; is willing to help out if a serious and visible effort is made. He makes it very clear what he wants as well as keeping the momentum of the class going so a 4hour class is do-able and even funny at times. And if anything he makes you think for yourself and questions old views in regard to class materials. AWESOME
Rick is awesome and will help you learn if you want to. He is very liberal and knows it, but is willing to listen to other's opinions. I esteem him highly, but have one huge issue that made him quite unapproachable: all his groupies! He is human and "gets off topic." He is incredibly intelligent and wants to share his knowledge.
Great class! Prof. Lockwood has a nice lecture style that does not leave you sleeping. The movie choices were all interesting and relevant. Attendance was not mandatory for a grade but essential in order to see the films. The final exam (in class essay)was fairly difficult but manageable. I would highly recommend this class and the professor.
Lockwood's ego was so inflated that it interfered with the coarse material. Very work intensive studies around lectures that were indirectly presented. Intensive essays and extensive group projects made me never want to take another class with him.
I sat through 2 hours with him and then dropped the class. He speaks very affectedly and is very pretentious. He really made my blood boil. He bashed Capitalism repeatedly, as if Ayn Rand were wrong...
Dr. Lockwood is funny, seriously intelligent, and will go out of his way to help his students outside of class. The class is extremely entertaining and interesting, and you'll learn a lot while having fun and not having to do too much work.
Ok teacher, fairly funny in lecture. Worst part was the seating, hot and cramped stadium seating. Also a writing intensive course that doesn't mention it on the description. Weekly film critiques are pretty easy, and you're giving a format to strictly follow. Pretty standard university studies course, ho hum and easy grade.
Professor Lockwood is funny. His does some funny schtick about how fabulous he is, but it is just plain fun. He really knows his health and film, and makes class so entertaining!
Not many assignments but his exams are kinda hard, You need to memorize a lot but he gives you a list of what to know. One big project at the end. Overall a good class.
I loved the class and loved the teacher. Would take again and again if I had too. The teacher is funny, smart, and I have learned so much with him and his wonderful methodology.
Very interesting class. Great lectures, although he loves tangents. Very easy grader on weekly assignments, although exams are a little difficult. This course description does not say it is writing intensive, but it is. For an A on the final exam, you must hand write seven pages in two hours on four prompts. Otherwise very enjoyable class.
Only got 3 out of 9 papers returned from the entire term (the whole class). Drawn-out and repetitive lectures, albeit funny at times. On exams, forces you to memorize exact chapters out of book when drawing information from it. (unnecessary)
Professor Lockwood is an excellent professor. Class was mandatory. He knew the topic well. He doesn't post notes online, so be sure to take lots of notes and write down everything he says. If you read, paid full attention, and showed up, there was no way you couldn't get an A his class.
He cares about his subject, and he loves himself. He isn't readily available outside of class, and attendance is mandatory (lectures not posted online). Overall work load is low- a bit of reading and attendance. Two tests, both essay, which are broad to show what you know. Show up to class and you will do fine.
He makes you think, and very open to student comments. Expects good work. Knows how to teach but sometimes gets off track. Easy on the eyes.
Had him for my SINQ. Incredibly unorganized. Scattered. Not clear. Never posts things on time. A waste.
Adorable, helpful, funny and interesting!
I liked him much better in his 350 class. He talked about the cosmos for the first few weeks and we didn't actually talk about health until the third week. The topic can sometimes be interesting, but it definitely didn't keep me awake half the time.
One of the most interesting classes I've taken in my college career and this is my last term! Lockwood is a great teacher, he really cares about the subject matter and makes coming to class enjoyable. He is funny and a great professor! He has specific requirements on the assignments so as long as you can follow directions, you will be fine!
Never responded to a single one of my emails. Very frustrating. But a great teacher!
I expected a class on the U.S. health systems to be quite boring, but this teacher made the subject so interesting. Great personal anecdotes, informative videos, and a cute teacher--all this made for a great class.
He is very dedicated but meets you were you are at. As somone who just want to get through it and get credit while wanting to learn, he is the guy for you. It was easy.
Intelligent, engaged and stimulating professor. One of my absolute favorites! All of his classes have been extremely beneficial.
Excellent teacher. Funny, smart, and interesting. He is very good at learning/remembering his students names but pretty bad at returning emails. He is a stickler with the requirements but will tell you that up front. He really seems like he wants everyone to pass. He is definitely not too bad to look at either.
Lockwood. Easy. Funny. Engaging. Disorganized a bit and class is unstructured. I don't know. I had him for the SINQ and walked away happy. I recommend him.
Smart, funny, and very straight forward. His lectures are entertaining, I attended this class right after a 12hr graveyard shift and yet he still kept me engaged. I actually enjoyed the class. Text is an easy read. I highly recommend him.
Amazing professor! He was engaging and charismatic. He made a boring topic like health insurance and the US health care system entertaining and funny. Very thoughtful speaker, makes great comparisons. Love him!
I've taken a class from him twice. The first time was awesome, hence the second try. Second time was horrible. Never returned papers on time or posted things online when he said he was going to. Every single assignment is a writing assignment, which the course description fails to mention. Group projects with groups that are too large. Ugh.
This is the type of teacher who does not take into account that students have obligations outside of this particular class, but expects you to understand when you don't get back a two page paper for a month. Scattered, egotistical, and expects you to regurgitate more knowledge than he gives you.
Yes his assignments are scattered sometimes and yes he takes a while to get stuff back but I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to learn from him during my undergrad. Any student looking to think outside the box and learn some incredible real life stuff shouldn?t miss the opp. to take one of his classes. He?s truly inspiring!
Dr. Lockwood spouts a lot of information in the 10 weeks of class, but it's all useful. The essay tests are harder than I thought they would be, but definitely fair grading. Bonus: he's charming, intelligent, and handsome. I've got a mad crush on him. Hotness rating = 10/10
Interesting professor. Seems to know a lot about different topics. Midterm was IN class and not online like he said the first day. Very easy class, just do the film reviews (he doesnt seem to read them, so if you follow the format you get a "A") and pick GOOD partners for the screenplay. Final was 7 pages HAND WRITTEN, in class.
Doctor Lockwood is one of my favorite professors. All of his lectures wind up being interesting (even if the material is kind of dry), and his tests and assignments are fair. Great class as long as you are willing to show up and pay attention.
There is one multiple choice midterm, a 1.5pg movie critique weekly, a 22 page screenplay (3 member group), and a 7 page essay final. The class is pretty simple and interesting because your are tying movie analyzing and critiquing with health. Lockwood makes the class very enjoyable.
An awesome professor. Has a tendency to go off on long tangents which can be distracting but he is extremely attentive to his students and quite approachable. Sticks to the basics with in class essays for exams which is challenging but show him you learned something and you'll do well. Taking notes and participating in class are highly important !
One of my favorite professors. So smart, very clever. Plus, ladies: so, so hot. Did I say he was hot? Mm!
I don't know where to start. I heart Dr. Lockwood, and his teaching style. First of all, he is absolutely brilliant, but in no way does he talk down to students. He knows SO MANY things, I am constantlly amazed! Work load is average: group project, short paper, midterm, long-ish project and final. Take this class! Lockwood ROCKS.
Very knowledgeable in the subject and explained it very well, albeit at a slow pace. There are only two tests that are essay questions though you have very little time to complete them so you must know the material. Pretty interesting class and not hard. Dr. Lockwood bears a striking resemblance to an intellectual Robert Downey Jr.
Dr. Lockwood is passionate and cares about the success of his students. He requires a decent amount of work but is fair in his grading and is very generous with his time for answering questions. His lectures are informative and thought provoking but itâ??s hard to not get distracted by his good looks during class.
I am a Lockwood fan but not a part of the fan club (giggling girls at the front) Listen closely, he chooses his words carefully and has a lot of valuable info to teach. Bummed not to be in one of his classes next term.
He is a tough grader (in comparison to other public health professors). You work on a group project in his film&health class and global health class. There is no opportunity to recover from a poor test grade so study well. Attendance is important to him. However, simply showing up everyday won't get you an A.
Mandatory attendance, weekly reviews, graded on formatting. Midterm, 7 page hand written final & a 3 person 22 pg screenplay. Teacher is a know-it-all and did not seem like he wanted his students to succeed, spoke about people doing things wrong so he could mark them down & how he didn't like to give A's. He did not peek my interest in the subject.
Very cynical. Grades solely on formatting, not content, so you get marked down for little things. I would not recommend this class
ok.. this is the first time I've commented on this website, & I have to correct people that commented. I'm working on the final now, it's not handwritten, typed, double-spaced. PHENOMENAL prof, one of the most brilliant minds I know. hilarious, witty. I wish he taught more classes. great communicator. I have so much respect for him.
Lockwood gets a lot of flack sometimes as being tough or mean. I think he's brilliant. He loves to talk about himself which can drag on, but he knows his stuff. While he can be a challenging grader, I think it helps people actually put a strong effort into their work--no slackers! He's witty and made my class on Health Systems and insurance fun!
Lockwood is a great professor. This is college, so people complaining is ridiculous. Let's all put on our big boy pants. This is a quality class, Lockwood makes you use critical thinking and applies challenging assignments to his course to stimulate your opinion on the subject. I personally learned a lot from Lockwood, he is very intelligent.
Not the best professor. Said he liked grading people down. Even when papers were formatted correctly, I was marked down, I had to go in to his office hours with a ruler to show him I had correct margins. I got a good grade in the class, but I wouldn't recommend it, unless you take it with a couple friends and can take turns singing the attendance
Hardest class I have ever taken and I'm at the end of my Bachelor's (with highest honors)! He grades solely on attendance (sign in sheet), 4 in class assignments, and two essay exams. Wouldn't be so bad except the midterm he gives you 50 min to write 5 essays, 1 pg each! Reading entire book is essential. Also he's unorganized and not very helpful.
I hated this class because it opened my eyes! It was a great course filled with information and analyzation. The professor was very fair with grading. The assignments were tough and he didn't budge too much on them. We chose a 4week course, so we chose the workload. I loved the textbook and films. It did ruin fast food for me. Haven't touched it since 1/2 way thru course. Thankful for that. I highly recommend this course!!
This professor has some major insecurity issues I am sorry to say. He talks about himself a lot, have favorites(mainly guys...not sure why), and tries way too hard to be funny and hip but comes off pretentious and insecure. I honestly have not learned a thing from him. His class was the most expensive nonsense I have ever seen...
This guy is awesome. This class is amazing. You will learn SO much, the work load perfect. Not too much, but assignments are meanigful. I look forward to going to this class. Dr. Lockwood is smart, engaging, and hilarious. He outlines his expectations clearly, and expects quality work. Take this class! You will not regret it.
Awesome teacher wicked smart knows his stuff. If you actually want to learn and not just get a grade take his class.
If I could listen to lecture and never talk with him, it would be perfect. Don't expect a straight answer, don't expect responses to emails, expect a outrageous final (6 pages of essays) after a mult. choice vocab midterm. Never taking a class again. Content is interesting. Classical PhD professor, to busy for cluster class students.
Global health was my favorite class at PSU. Lockwood's lectures are intriguing. Great professor. I loved the group project. Personable. Not to mention, he is incredibly good looking.
Lockwood is pretty laid back professor. Attendance was mandatory and he doesn't post any notes on d2l. 1 midterm essay and a final exam essay which only reflects what is learned after the 1st midterm. Pretty sweet huh? Don't mind him with his awkward personality. I found it a bit entertaining that with his teasing. :)
Lockwood changed my life. His classes are not "easy", but they are extremely meaningful. I have taken 350 and 444. Both topics I would have originally dreaded, but now am a semi-expert in! Take him if you want to learn, not if you want to waste your time and "get by" with a grade.
Don’t have everyone in your group present. He requires a lot of info in your project & does not give enough time. Don’t rely on everyone to stay within their time limit because it doesn’t work. Only a handful of groups were able to finish. Pick 1-2 people to present & practice A LOT. He asks questions during your presentation which takes away time.
Professor Lockwood has high standards, so if you're looking for an easy A in a film class, this isn't the one for you. He is fair, funny, and knows his stuff. He does go off on tangents and talks about himself, but I find his quirks likable. Make sure to get in a group for the screen play assignment with people you know will show up & do their work.
My favorite professor by far! He is brilliant and witty. Has a wealth of knowledge and is hilarious! He is a difficult grader and does expect a lot but its a 400 level class so people need to quit complaining! He makes the effort to know everyone's name and instantly makes u feel completely comfortable.
One of my favorite professors in my five years at PSU. Dr Lockwood is awesome, and I learned so much in his class. He makes you work for an A, like a college course should be, but it's worth it.
I took his film and health class, very interesting. His tests were pretty hard and thorough, but he curved and was an easy grader on the project.
The best professor I've had at PSU. His lectures are clear and very interesting even when the material isn't. He really knows a ton of information and he may come off as a strict grader, but I've never gotten less than an A even when I thought I'd done poorly. I've taken PHE350 and 444 from him and I really wish he taught more classes.
He is smart, hip, slick and cool however, he has no empathy or compassion. He is not a teacher. He is a presenter and grader with no empathy.
I liked Richard. He was funny, very knowledgeable, and engaging. However, his tests are hard to complete within the time given and he is too analytical (rather then helpful) about you as a person when you go to office hours. The visit was rushed and impersonal, pretty much a waste of time. Wish he was more friendly outside of class.
This guy is great. Only took it to fill a studies credit, and would recommend him to anyone. He's a very intelligent individual and his lectures are really interesting. I wish more professors has the ability to keep my attention the same way he does.
Fantastic professor. He is extremely knowledgeable and really knows his stuff.I feel like I learned more from him than anyone else. Just make sure to attend class and take good notes, as he does not post his lectures online.
He knows everything about the subject, but he grades with no empathy. Two test, essay style, you get 7 questions, you get to choose 5 from them, all page essay answers, the more you write, the more you get points. 5 homework during the term..
Captivating professor but your grade is subject to his mood and preconceived notions about you. He''s given full credit when I was wrong and less than half when I quoted lecture with supporting statements. I found it disconcerting that he asked me to coffee to nerd out after class. Lacks professionalism. ''A'' grades in PHE until this course.
Go to class, take good notes and you will do just fine. Attendance is mandatory and he does not post his lecture notes online. His exams are essay format. However they're not too bad because you don't have to answer every essay. He gives you a variety of questions so you can answer the one you studied best.
Film and Health: loved it. Most movies were good. Weekly response papers mean a lot of writing. He's a tough grader (follow all directions!), but he's a great professor. His lectures are interesting, engaging, and often funny. I'm taking him for Health Systems, and I don't regret it. In-class, handwritten essays are his 'thing'. Easy on the eyes
Professor Lockwood is awesome, he really makes you work for it, if you don't know what you're talking about you're not going to get an A. He has a unique way of being able to detect BS essay responses and is an unforgiving grader. Anyone who complains about him simply didn't put the time and effort into his class. Its not easy but it's worth it!
DR. Lockwood is great.
Amazing professor, very helpful when I went to his office hours and his lectures were very engaging. He loves discussion and when you have something to say he really makes you feel acknowledged. End of the term group presentation on a country requires a lot of effort and understanding of the subject.
Lockwood managed to make a class mostly about health insurance interesting. Best teacher, huge nerd. Midterm and Final are both essays but are mostly taken from the homework. He doesn't talk about the book much but likes to sneak in a question from in into tests. It's not difficult if you put in the work. Take him!
Super intriguing, big and broad concepts that Lockwood will make your work for. He is clearly very passionate, which makes the seemingly boring context quite interesting.
Has no empathy. Only gives you good grades if he likes you. I disagreed with a grade he gave me and since then he gave me low grades. Not professional. He is passionate about his teaching, but he is a researcher.. not a teacher and does not understand how students learn best. I got straight A's in PHE classes until now...
Professor Lockwood has a good sense of humor and is clear on his assignments. Class never got out late and it even got out early sometimes if the movie was short. I would definitely take this professor again, he makes class fun and enjoyable.
Easiest Lockwood class of the three. Watch a movie every week, write 2 pages on it. It gets easier as you go. He sneaks questions onto the midterm/final from the book and slides that most people don't expect. Screenplay group project in second half of the term - write an episode of a tv show with a health spin. Sounds way harder than it is.
A sociologist professor who studies health care; this was the greatest gift PSU gave to my education. This class is designed to prepare you for graduate school. Get ready to work hard and read the textbook cover to cover several times. Sit in the front! Email him! Utilize him as a resource and as a mentor.
Really great instructor overall. He is a tough grader, so don't expect the class to be easy. Apply yourself and he will recognize you. Group project at end of term isn't too bad, but be warned, he will drill your group when you present.
I really enjoyed Dr. Lockwood's class. He's funny, smart and engaging. The screenplay project ends up being pretty cool because it's different than your usual report style essay in other classes. A lot of the class participated in discussions and the movies are great. Expectations are clear when it comes to assignments.
He is conceited and makes a fuss over small details. He does this thing where it takes him a while to finish a though which gets annoying over time. He makes a "film" class WAY too serious. For the love of God were watching films.
Lockwood can seem like you are about to have a good class at the beginning. Then as the weeks go on his egocentric attitude will make you borderline insane. He makes a film and health class very difficult and admits it. If you want a super hard cluster class, with a guy who is in complete love with who he is, take it. If not, look elsewhere.
Dr. Lockwood is entertaining, engaging and knowledgable. He has wonderful stories about reading brain wave patterns too! Great format, great lectures and fun to participate in. Projects and testing is reasonable and fairly graded. His expectations are clear and so is his grading. Fantastic professor!
Prof. Lockwood seems like an okay professor during the first few weeks. He turns into a conceited, biased, unavailable professor by the halfway point of the term. Thought I was doing okay through the whole course but ended up failing. Ridiculously hard grader, but his critiques arent rational. Rather, he seems to grade based on his mood.
In this class you absolutely HAVE to follow the grading criteria/format for written quick critique assignments. If you don't, you won't get any credit. Go to office hours before first homework is due to make sure it's proper format & you'll succeed. Fun class that is very writing intensive.
This class is s stupid in reality it doesn't teach you anything. Lockwood just wants everything done his way and you have to handwrite everything and you have to make it as if it was an essay and READ all the instruction on HW.. NEVER gives study guide reads and expands on power point you'll have to really pay attention worse 11 weeks of my life..
Nice guy. There's a lot of work and he's quite particular when it comes to formatting your written responses for the films watched. However, he's quite organized and his expectations are pretty clear. There's also a group project that involved creating a screenplay that was surprisingly fun, especially if you make it a come

I really enjoyed Lockwood , I had him for global health and PHE 350. You need to actively study and pay attention in class. His lectures are very interesting and I learned the most in his class. You'll do great on the tests if you basically remember everything he says in lecture and from the book. Honestly, just pay attention in class .
Professor Lockwood is a caring instructor. He cares about students' well-being beyond the classroom. He is super responsive to email, and he makes things manageable during the COVID-19 hardships. Throughout the term, there will be three exams, weekly homework and quiz but it is all doable. You will earn an A by listening to his lectures. Recommend!
Editing this because when I directly criticized his behavior he willingly changed his course of action. I really appreciated that, and it was very unexpected. I don't know that I would want to take a class with him again, but at least he was willing to listen and make changes.
Very tough grader. Exams are long and often feature questions that are difficult to find/recall from lectures. VERY lecture-heavy and dull.
Worst PHE teacher I have taken. He is very hard to get ahold of and instead of answering your question redirects you to watch 1-2 hours of videos that won't answer your questions. The grading criteria aren't clear and the questions are really vague. He doesn't give you good feedback and is horribly unorganized. The good comments are a mystery to me
Lockwood is by far the worst teacher I've had a PSU. His lectures are annoying, his arrogance shines right through. His assignments seem straight forward but then he will dock you for not taking away the same concepts he does from the videos required for the assignments. Instructions on tests are vague. If you can take someone else I recommend it.
Sometimes he gets super inspired the readings and will make positive comments if you thoroughly connect the concepts. Cogmaps are not the hardest. It requires a significant amount of work. He is indeed a tough instructor. If you are taking a 400 level class, he expects you have well developed academic skills. Try to work hard and get through.
