This is the prof that looks like a bouncer, nice teacher, not too hard if you keep up with material.
fruity guy, but really fair. his tests have no surprises, he lays everything out clearly. lets ppl use a cheet sheet on the final, just make sure you make it to his 8.30 class every day...important lectures :)

I had this teacher for three semesters. He great and clear, if you just go to class. Every quiz and test is straight forward and he gives an overview on what will be on them. I reccomend taking him.
He is straight forward and very friendly. He has a sense of profesionalism in his work. His quizes are very easy and he tries to help his students as much as possible. He does look like a bouncer..lol
Absolutely recomend this professor. He is great!
Very good and is very clear on his lectures
Calculus was easy with professor lucas, even though i took it in hs too. He was clear on lectures and would tell you what's on the tests--he'd give a whole outline on the chalkboard. he knows what he's talking about and is always willing to help..good guy
he talks like a mile a min..hard 2 follow...doesn't realize that he's got students who are trying 2 learn cause he gets so x-cited w/ what he's teaching that he goes superfast
Dr. Lucas is enthusiastic about what is probably a boring class for a PhD in math. He answers questions, is flexible and understanding and his quizzes are clear. I don't look forward to his class, but I don't dread it either.
Easy class. Tests are pretty easy, stuff from the hw. No attedance necessary if you know the material.
Lucas is really nice and helpfull. If you do the homework you're good for the tests. Only four tests total and about five quizes. He's willing to give extra credit.
goes too fast in material but very easy tests and quizzes, just come to class and do homework
Great class! He understands that we are busy, so he is not strict about make-ups if you miss a test or quiz. His tests and quizes are pretty easy and he explains everything really well in class. Never takes attendance and often lets you out early.
This was one of the worst taught classes I have ever taken and he is a terrible teacher, but if you are looking for an easy A, take it.
Class is alright. Only really teaches material about half the time. Never takes attendence and does not know names. Tests are just like homework problems.
He's really cool and pretty much leaves most of the learning to yourself. He always goes over the homework and often lets students out of class early because we finish everything early. He's also unintentionally funny when he mistakes small mistakes on problems.
Great class. But let me tell you, it gets SUPER Hard after the drop date and you cover like 3 sections a class period. Dr. Lucas is very willing to help you out after clas, and you will need help.
easy class, whether you go or not, gives homework but doesnt collect and the tests are the same as the quizzes
Very nice guy. Barely went to class and still got an A.Laid back and understanding. No way to hate him. Pretty good at explaining that material and answers ALL questions.
This professor is excellent! Although he looks like a biker, he is the nicest and most understanding math prof. ever! Not only does he not collect homework, but he allows you to use your notes on some of the tests! TAKE HIS CLASS!!
good teacher explains things very good...but he goes really fast and gets nervous when a student catches his mistakes...its funny though
Awesome teacher...let's you out of class early all the time. Does not check or collect homework. Tests and quizzes are straight from examples in class. Lets you use a page of notes on harder tests.
He's a very clear and helpful professor. He goes a bit fast sometimes but you can always ask questions and he will help you out. The tests and quizes are pretty easy. I missed about 5 classes and have an A so the class is not hard snf you learn a lot.
AWESOME TEACHER!!! Just show up to class, and do your homework, and you will be fine.
Dr. Lucas was the best. This is a very hard class but he made it seem so easy. No joke, there are hard times, but Dr. Lucas is always free for questions and is very willing to help. Warning, as soon as the drop date for classes passes, the class will get super hard (you will cover a few sections per class). It's doable, but you need to work
LOVED THIS CLASS. Math has never been one of my strong points but he simplifies everything. Just go to class, take the notes from his lecture and do your homework and you will be set. He also reviews everything for tests. He wants you to get an A.
Good teacher, he knows his stuff and gives good examples for better understanding of the material. His tests are very easy as long as you take notes in class. He goes through his lectures very fast.. but overall an easy teacher.
Prof Lucas is not a great teacher. He seems much more interested in gettin throught the material than teaching. I have never seen anuone lecture so fast. Ever. Getting out of class early is an insult with the amount of tuition I pay. I pay his salary and I pay him to teach me. When he lets us out early he is not doing his job. Got an A, bad Prof.
Man for anybody who thinks this teacher was hard, they must be quite dumb. This teacher seriously is probably the easiest math teacher at loyola. He tells u everything there is gonna be on the test, and so his tests are easy AND you can use 1 pg of notes. He also lets you take makeup exams.
Wants his students to succeed. Although he looks like a tough guy, he is actually one of the nicest and most sympathetic professors I've had. If you do the homework and show up for class consistently, you should be fine (test problems are similar to homework problems).
Best teacher that I have ever had. He is so helpful and is very understanding. If you at all seem concerned with your grade he will help you get the grade you want. He is such a sweet guy! I would highlt recommend him.
Lucas seems like a nice guy, and his smart a** comments that he makes towards other students are really funny. But he goes through material way too quickly and spends too much time on old homework instead of spending it one new material. He constantly walks in front of the problems he writes so it isn't exactly easy to take notes.
His class is way too hard for an Algebra class! He teaches the material well, goes over everything but each question on the test is worth 7 points! If you forget a negative sign, he'll take off 4-6 points. It's insane, good luck.
Great Professor!! Very fair...tests are straightforward and pretty simple as long as you go to class and pay attention. Highly recommend.
a likable prof but he zoom through the material and expect you to understand it. lectures are about 2 hrs but he's done by 1 hr, which is good and bad. he gives a lot of homework and there is a quiz and exam in the same week. you can have a sheet of notes for every quiz and exam, which is great.
Sure, he goes through material quite fast. But it's so....easy. His method: short, fast, and to the point. Just what I need. It make take some getting used to, but once you are, you'll be just fine. Just do the homework, take notes, and you'll be set.
Do not take him for calc 3 because he sucks. He might be really good for an easy class but not for calc 3. He does not know what he is talking about. He goes over material so fast that you do not understand him and also he aproches differnt methods that the book does for problems.
4 quizes (25 points each) 4 tests (100 points each). NO MIDTERM OR FINAL! Quizes come mainly from lecture examples. Tests are largely based from quizes. He covers the material so quickly and precisely that you get to leave class early (or ask him questions) every time. Tests and quizes are straightforward: he does not want to trick you. Take it!
He is a very helpful teacher. The class is organized so that at the beginning you go over the homework problems and then the rest of class you learn the lesson. He thoroughly explains the concepts and you get to drop the lowest test grade.
Dr. Lucas is a really superb teacher. I highly recommend him to anyone who takes his course (I took it Fall 07). He really gives informative examples and the tests are really straight forward. Attending the class really helps and especially the reviews before exams.
I have always hated math and have never understood it.. until I took Math 117 with Lucas. hes an awesome prof. explains things perfectly, tests are completely straighforward from what he lectures in class. very helpful and approachable. would DEFINATELY recommend him.
great calc3 teacher..4quizzes and 4 tests and 1 final (lowest test dropped.. can be the final!) just go to the lecture and stay on top of hw and this class is easy.. the only ppl that do bad are those that are lazy and don't do hw.. tests are exactly like quizzes...
Pretty easy. 5 tests, drop lowest, final is just last test.
Best Math Class I've ever taken. Pretty easy class. Best teacher so far at this school. He is easy, clear, and gets right to the point and goes right to short cuts and stuff. Definitely try to take his classes, he's awesome!
He is a great teacher. You take 5 tests(including the final) and he drops your lowest test score. There are no surprises abotu what will be on the test because the day before he reviews the entire unit worth of material. He lets you use a 1-page not sheet, but he teaches well enough that you probably don't use it. He is a fair and straighforward.
He is the best. Teaches clearly, no suprises on the tests and is very helpful. Great teacher if you have trouble with higher math.
Took him for 117 and 118, great teacher! Moves quickly, but very helpful. Do the homework and ask questions in class, you'll get an A! NO surprises on tests, he ROUNDS ALL GRADES UP! Only 5 tests and the lowest one is dropped.
I took him for 117 and 118 and registered for 131 with him. He is GREAT. Homework is not mandatory but you will fall behind if you dont do it. 5 tests including the final and the lowest is dropped. Very helpful and really knows his stuff. Highly recommend him!!!!!
Lectures are pretty easy to understand and he gives time at the beginning of each class to ask questions about hw. Do the hw if you don't want to fall behind. Lets you have a sheet of notes for all the tests. (5 tests including final, lowest dropped). He is very straightforward on the tests -- doesn't try to trick you. Highly recommend!
Awesome professor. I took him for 117 and 118 and I am signed up to take him for 131. Easy to understand and straightfoward. I didn't do one night of homework either semester and I still got an A for both classes. Take him! He is a great teacher!
Best Calc prof to take. Will teach you calc and make it easy. I never took calc before but he made it very enjoyable. Tells you practice problems the class before the test. Will teach you what you need for Math 132.
Amazing Calc Prof. Take him! I am not good at advanced math, and he made it so everyone could understand. Tests aren't too bad, do the hw he suggests and you will do fine
Amazing. Every word that man said I completely understood. He teaches everything in a shortcut manner. He explains everything so clear...He has 4 exams and optional final. He is the best teacher ever!! He kinda looks like a Hulk Hogan Santa. So intimidating when you first meet him... but he is actually extremely nice. :)
awesome prof. easy and crystal clear, 4 exams and 1 final cumulative which could be dropped. def take him, very straightforward
Lucas is an awesome guy. He tells you exactly whats on your tests the class before them and its easy to receive the grade you want.
Very straightforward and clear on what to expect on exams. Do the homework and you'll do fine. Definitely recommend him!
Awesome professor. Great teacher, makes sure you understand the material, answers questions well, and tells you exactly what will be on the test and how to prepare for it. I'd definitely recommend him.
MY favorite math teacher of all time!!!
Excellent prof.
He is very intimidating and expects you to understand eveything. Personally I don't think he is that great of a teacher as everyone here appears to make him. He won't help you outside of class only during his office hours which were at 7am .
Great proffessor! He explains everything clearly during lecture and prepares you well for exams. For the exams he even lets you have an entire "cheat sheet" of paper, so memorizing equations isn't necessary. It's a relatively easy class with an optional final at the end :D p.s he also looks like the monopoly guy which is personally my fav about him
Great professor! Helpful when answering questions. Optional, but recommended, homework problems out of book. Straight-forward exams. He isn't out to trick you. Outlined material on exams. Always let class out early. Grade based entirely on three exams. Optional final. Final cannot hurt grade. He rounds grades up. Example: 89.1% --> 90.0%.
He goes straight off of his practice quizes. All you need to do is know how to do the questions on his practice quizes and you'll get A's on his exams. He helps you when you ask, he gives homework but it is only to help you so it never counts as a grade. Very easy the way he teaches. I suggest him for Math 117!
Awesome prof! I already knew much of the material but he know his stuff. Exams are just like the examples in class and he lets you have cheat sheets. Final is extra credit..it doesn't get any better than this!
looks like popeye. Great teacher easier than taking candy from a disabled person. gave me 50 percent extra credit for being an all american that took me from a D to an A.
Nice guy. Very clear lectures, lets you know exactly what you need to know for the exams. Lets you have a cheat sheet and the final is optional. Definitely recommended for anyone taking calculus.
Very good teacher. Lectures were very clear, book not so much. Gives lots of home work, but it is not collected. You must do it if you want to be able to do the questions on tests. Goes fast in lecture but it is a university math class. Does a good summary before tests. No extra credit. Grade is based only on tests scores. Listen to him.
great class & instructor but I wish I knew more algebra. You can do good if you do all the work he assigns and don't fall behind.
He's alright, sometimes his methods seem a bit backwards but they make sense in the end, just a roundabout way of getting there. I never did any hw, only practice quizzes before the tests to study and I am doing well. Not amazing, but he's aight.
He has no methodology. Of course, Math isn't my best subject, but he has no structure in teaching. If you aren't good with math, don't take him. I'm glad I had my high school notes and stuff to fall back on. Not taking him again for 118.
I loved Professor Lucas! He was very helpful, answered every question, and was very clear whenever he explained the problems. He also posted practice exams weeks ahead of time that was very helpful!
Professor Lucas is THE bro! Very clear with his lectures and generally lets class out a half hour early. Gives homework every class, but it's not graded. He will also post practice tests online(very useful for studying). My one gripe is that he can go pretty fast and he tends to cover up much of what he is writing, making note taking hard at times.
Love Prof. Lucas! He let us have cheat sheets (front and back) for all the tests (3 total), and the final was optional. Taking the final can only help your grade, but not hurt it. This class was very easy. He wrote his notes on the board. Often let us out early. Love him!
Loved him. He makes the subject matter so easy to understand; tells you very straightforwardly about what you need to know. Reviews exactly whats going to be on the test the class before the exam. Optional final.
If you are amazing at math than take him! His lectures are long and boring, but makes everything clear. You long have 3 test and a optional final. If you fail the first test you are in trouble!
I loved this class! Lectures were straight forward. He assigned daily homework but it was never collected and we had three test and final was option. One page of notes was allowed on every test. I would definitely recommend this class with this professor.
Professor Lucas is the absolute best math teacher you can take, PERIOD. makes calculus (a tough subject) easy to understand and manage. He will never trick you and tells you EXACTLY what is on each exam in great detail and pretty much in order. He rounds up completely (meaning if you get an 89.0001 he will bump it up to a 90 so you get the A-) TAKE
Do his homework problems. optional final if you are satisfied with your grade. 3 tests not including final. He goes over the hw in class. Goes over clearly what will be in the test. Definitely take him!!!
The homework is hard, but helpful. He goes through each problem step by step. There are 4 tests including an optional final, which can only help you. Every test you can use a full sheet of notes. He also puts on practice tests which are the same as the test but different numbers. Every test gets 2 review days. He is really nice, helpful, and fair.
Best professor I have taken. The final is optional and you get to use a sheet of notes on every test which saved my semester. He goes through homework every lecture and will explain everything. He is a must
A wonderful professor for a wonderful class. He makes difficult concepts a lot easier to understand. If you do really good on the tests, you don't need to take the final (it's optional to begin with). Homework isn't graded, but it's still important. This man makes the world go around.
My only complaint is the point based grading. The final is optional, which is great, but if you screw up one test your grade is sunk. He's a great guy & fantastic lecturer. I think getting an A is definitely possible and the reason I didn't is because I got behind in homework. Stay on top of homework, and do/understand every problem and an A is urs
He does not care for his students and did not care that our test averages went from B to C-'s. I don't know why people rave about him; he is not a professor I would recommend or take again.
He makes a difficult subject relatively easy. He gives practice quizzes that are basically mirror images of the exams, but with different values. After dropping calc last semester with a different professor, I'm very happy I took prof. Lucas this semester. Hard to go wrong with him.
I love this man. Richard Lucas gives three exams and a final that make up your total grade. However, his practice quizzes are EXACTLY what is on the exam with just a few numbers changed. His lecture is awesome, he answers all questions, and he is very fair. I will be taking him again without a doubt.
Professor Lucas is a very straight forward professor. He presents the material, and if there are no questions, he will often let class out early. Be warned that the only grades in this class are tests, but he lets you use a cheat sheet. Optional final. If you've taken calculus before, this class is a breeze.
Professor Lucas is not a great professor. Outside of class he will not help you and make you feel very uncomfortable. He is strict and makes you feel less intelligent if you ask questions. He moves extremely quickly. I would not recommend taking him.
He was a bad professor. Gives way to much homework( Assigns like 30-60 problems per lecture). He rushes through problems and writes all over the place. Gives practice quizzes which help somewhat. Tests are really long and he's a hard grader. Probably a very overrated professor.
He wasn't a very good professor. He had a condescending attitude towards people when they asked questions in class. He also went way too fast in class when providing notes and explanations for homework problems.
He's a pretty straightforward guy. Allows one piece of paper front and back of notes during tests and also provides sample tests that are very very similar to the actual tests. Class is pretty laid back. Usually lets class out pretty early. I thought he was pretty good at answering questions in class.
He makes the class pretty easy and doesn't require any memorization. You get a sheet of notes on every test and the final is optional. The grade is comprised of 3 tests and an optional final. no extra credit
Wonderful professor. If you do his practice exams and understand them you will do well in this class. They are nearly identical just different numbers. The final is optional and can only boost your grade. 300/325 points are from the tests so they are extremely important and he doesn't drop any. A lot of homework but paper hw is not graded. 10/10
EASIEST MATH PROFESSOR EVER!!! I suck at math and I easily pulled an A in this class. If you do the practice problems he assigns then you'll be fine for the tests. Optional final which was nice. Take him
He was a bad professor. He rushes through problems and writes all over the place. Gives practice quizzes which help somewhat. Tests are really long and he's a hard grader. Probably a very overrated professor.
Takes Attendance every Class Period that makes up 10% of your grade at the end of the semester. Gives pop quizzes from time to time and is very test heavy. Also isn't a very approachable person very intimidating to talk to. Goes really fast in lecture and doesn't explain clearly like other professors do at Loyola. Take another professor!!!
Definitely a very overrated professor! Most of the reviews on here are from a while back and their mostly made from math majors who took him in the upper level math courses that only math majors take who are very knowledgeable in math. If your taking MATH 118 with him and haven't had a good experience with math before then avoid at all costs!
Level of difficulty is definitely not a 1.9! It should be a decent 3 and above. Since he doesn't really explain concepts well and really thorough but rather goes quite quick you will have to sit down and teach yourself the material with the book and go to tutoring if not gifted in math since he is very intimidating to talk to at his office hours!
LOVED him!! He made the material easy to follow and explains everything with great detail. He loves when his students ask questions, and is eager and ready to help. Overall he's such a sweet guy and I really didn't mind going to class. I highly recommend taking his class, especially if you're not very fond of math, he makes it bearable.
Hardest Math class I've ever taken. Barely passed. If you are bad at math and require a lot of instruction, DO NOT TAKE LUCAS. He is a really nice guy, but you are only graded on 3 exams and webassign. His exams are open note which is nice and he gives you practice exams that he says are identical to the exam, but they are MUCH harder.
Richard Lucas is a great professor! His course was super easy, you really just show up, copy down his examples and then you're ready for the exam! No quizzes and he allows a cheat sheet for each exam. I highly recommend him, super easy A!
Only three tests and a little homework. His billowing cargo pants and New Balance shoes would make my day. You can bring a sheet of notes to the test and the reviews are just like the test. He is the most amazing professor and an adorable bald old guy with a huge white mustache!!!
this man is the greatest math professor I've ever had. he is a great at explaining material and reviewing for tests. 3 tests, little webassign, and the final is optional. also you can bring in a sheet of notes for every exam. the bonus is his cargo pants and sassy remarks. a true gem.
Professor Lucas is a great option for Math 118, as long as you do the web assign homework you should do fine. Prof. Lucas makes it really clear what will be on tests and you get A WHOLE SHEET OF NOTES! I just needed the math credit for the business core and he made it really accessible for me!
Only graded on webassign assignments, which are very easy and pretty short, and 3 exams. The final exam is optional. It can only improve your score, not hurt it. He's pretty chill and he ended class early like almost every class so that was sweet.
Professor Lucas is an amazing teacher. Class is not too difficult if you have some math knowledge. Participation is optional but I would recommend going because EXAMPLES THAT HE DOES IN CLASS ARE THE SAME PROBLEMS ON THE TEST. We did not have any homework so the grade is based on 3 tests and a midterm. Pretty chill professor. Easy grade if you try
He's such a great teacher! I highly recommend taking him! Your whole grade is based on 3 test and that's it. And for every test, you can bring a whole sheet of notes he won't collect. Homework is optional, but he goes over it every class if you have questions. Attendance is only needed if you don't understand the HW. Plus he's very nice!
He's the nicest and best math teacher I've ever had. His course is just based on exams but he teaches the material very well so you'll be prepared. He goes over assignments in class and gives good study guides! Take him for math!
I think he is a very good teacher. Pre-calc is pretty easy for me and he gives a lot of examples in class and makes sure you get it. The class is based off three exams and the final is optional which is nice. There is homework everyday but he goes over things you don't understand. I would recommend him.
Professor Lucas is a nice older gentleman with a real passion for math. If you try in his class I have no doubt you will get an A. He is accessible outside of class and via email. He also gives practices tests so you can have a good idea of what the actual test is going to look like.
Professor Lucas is an amazing professor. His math 118 class is so easy if you try. He gives samples exams which are very similar to the actual exam. Homework is optional, only 3 exams and a final is optional. Going to class is beneficial, he goes over the problems. Super nice and helpful professor. Would recommend!!
WHAT A CHILL GUY. He doesn't collect/grade hw, but he starts every class by asking if there are any questions about the hw, then he'll explain whichever problems you ask for on the board. He allows a note sheet on every exam, which he doesn't collect. The final is optional. He ended class early a lot. Only downside is that exams are your only grade
The nicest professor I have ever had. Really cares about his students and does not want ANYONE to fail. He knows not everyone loves math and wants you to succeed and continue your education. 10/10 would take again
