Messed up grading policy!!
great class
He might be helpful if HE taught his classes... and if you enjoy being a lab rat
great course, the helpfulness of the GA who taught the class was great
Doesn't teach the class. A fruit loop who coughs all the time and considers it a measure of positive success in behavior modification. In love with himself, loves T.A.s who idolize him.
Never met the teacher but am thankful I have a great T.A. It is an incredibly difficult class with the amount of work put in, but you do learn a lot about the subject. His Book $120.00 His Coursepack $110.00. Sigh,
No ambiguity. You know exactly what you must do to earn an A. Standards are set high and students encouraged to excell. You'll work harder in his classes than you might like, but you'll have the grades to show for it, and you'll know the material COLD!
Those who have trouble in Mallott's class really aren't into Psych. You know what you have to do. He's an extreme behaviorist, but the whole school is, so don't major in psych at WMU if you don't like it. SERIOUSLY. Loved this course, and rat lab so fun!
Poor grading system. Never knew where we stood until after the course was over.
Could damage freshman brain stems.
very poor amd confusing grading policy, classes cut back because of lack of funds = good for us.
Never met the guy, he doesn't teach the class. TA was helpfull. Quizzes everday at the end of class. Overall, not a bad class. The Rat Lab was great.
the material for his courses is rudimentary, but the amount of work that he/the advanced psych courses require is absolutely absurd... "It's hard because we don't want you to remember it." Guess what? I've forgotten it because it's obsolete. When I attended Western, I saw him in person five times.
Dr. Malott is a great prof. Take the time to take some advance classes and actually meet him.
As long as you do the work, you're good. He demands a lot out of you, but you'll learn more in his classes than your entire collegiate career.
Never met the guy. Most likely, you will not either. A TA taught my Honors section. As far as the PSY 100 Honors course (seminar & rat lab), you must know that there is reading/homework/quiz for each class. If you do all of the above and are present for all of the rat labs, you will get an easy A.
great class! never met Malott, he has GA's teach the class, he just sets the guidelines! very strict grading scale. you'll learn more in this class than you ever have in any other class. very very time consuming. quizzes everyday with definitions that must be memorized word-for-word.... no joke!
You will not get to see him until Final Fiestas. H does not teach the class and never drops in. His GA's teach and grade the classes and recommendations are by them. He does not personally know the student at all unless highly recommended by the GA's. Has double weighted system as a grading system and is really hard. Lots of memorization and regurg
It's definitely a hard class, but I've learned more in this class than any other. You either love him or hate him, and although the GA's teach the courses, they do a great job and make it really really hard for you to fall behind. They make it really hard to not get an A in the class although it is a LOT of work. Quizzes every day with defninitions
this was psy 100 honors which is like psych 3600. You never really meet malott except during special lectures. You will learn SO much and his book is amazingly easy to read and understand. There is a lot of work but you won't actually mind doing it because it helps a lot.
Dr. Malott is a world reknowned expert in the field of behavior analysis. It's true you never see him, he is extremely busy, but his Grad students do a very satisfactory job of teaching the class. He wrote the textbook which is straightforward, TONS of memorization, and daily quizes. Stay on top.
Dr. Malott seems quite narcissistic. He is a strange old man who is brainwashed in behaviorist thought. Lectures are sometimes incomprehensible, comes off like a demented scientist. Practices alot of favoritism, some of his biggest favorites end up as brownnosing TA's.
Best prof for Psy. hard class but you learn more with him than you would anywhere else. if you are a psy major then definitely take this class with him but be ready to bust your butt and spend alot of time studying. whoever has a problem with him have problems with bis radical behaviorism. hes extreme but he knows his stuff.
Dr. Malott doesn't teach the course, he just sets it up for the GA's to take over and you never meet him... which makes the class feel kind of like the Wizard of Oz. You use the book he wrote (great, humorous book). Class requires a LOT of work, quizzes on every chapter, definitions every day etc. Study hard and you'll be fine!

i would suggest taking carr bc you don't ever meet malott. TAs teach the class after taking it over the summer. good to know that you're paying good money to have a 22 year old kid teach a 300 level class with no prior experience in teaching. western should rework this program.
(I'm also taking 460 right now) He is pompous, full of himself, and does nothing but try to brain-wash his students. Sadly, I had no choice to to take these classes with him, and I have to deal with the insane workload, and the professor who thinks himself to be a god (while not believing in another).
Tough to rate the professor since he doesn't teach the class. And I totally agree with another comment about how we still have to pay the same amount for a kid with no teaching experience to run the class. However, if you read each chapter and be sure to know your vocabulary you will do well. You MUST go to class, and the lab.
you never meet him, TA's teach the course I didn't learn anything and for a 1crhr class its a lot of work his grading system sux you meet for like 15min hw check and thats that I dont want to say its a waist of time but I really didnt learn anything I could have done that by myself just do hw go to class and you'll pass not worth it sorry
You never get to see him, but his teachings are awesome. I think every parent should read "Princples of Psychology" before even thinking of having kids!!! lol
You typically don't meet him which is true. I am an undergrad and have worked with him multiple times and can say he is not full of himself at all. He really cares about the kids and really knows this stuff. World renowned professor. TAs(competent) teach the class and you can ALWAYS get help from one of them. You will learn so much from the class.
Most of the time can't tell if he's being serious or sarcastic. WILL make fun of you. This class is a combo of 360 & 460 VERY time consuming w/ reading 1-2 chapters for each class along w/ hw. & for the 1st 1/2 of class, a chapter a night from another book w/ hw. Grade is completely based off of quiz grade & very hard to bring up, so STUDY.
It is time consuming and hardwork, but I have never learned more useful information from any class in my life. This class clarified what I want to do with the rest of my life. If you dont take 360 or 460 with Malott i guarantee you will regret that decision.
If you have to take this class do everything within your power to not take it with Malott and his GSI cronies. I have NEVER been more angered by a class, his teachings are CRAP, his book is overcomplicated common sense and a waste of your time, he doesn't even bother to teach his own BS, he only focuses on one aspect of BA. Save yourself!
This entire class is a personal testimony to his superior intelligence, his book is common sense made complicated, his GSI's are horrific to say the best, and he can't even make an apperance to offend you in person. His grading scale is totally messed up. I wouldn't reccomend this class to my VERY WORST enemy. You will regret ever taking Malott.
Most bizarre professor I've ever had, you will either love him or hate him, even though you probably won't ever meet him. The grading system is totally nonsensical and the workload seems ridiculous (be prepared to memorize definitions word for word). If you are taking any other challenging or time consuming classes do not take 360 or 460 with him.
Awful class and awful grading system. His whole system (i.e., cult) is one big mess. Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Malott is loved by his cult-like cronies (GSI's and wannabe GSI's) but everyone else finds him detestable. You can gate an A, but you have to do Way Way too much work to do it. Not hard, but endless work.
I have never had to do so much work for one class! be prepared for 3600 taking over your life! The TA's do NOT teach so be prepared to learn everything from the book. The material itself is interesting, but you are not graded on how well you understand it but instead on if you can memorize vocab word for word. awful class & awful grading system.
I have never seen so much workload in my life. I quit the class after two weeks. Totally ridiculous. I paid too much for book and coursepack just to read jokes that were not funny at all; especially with my money involved. Im taking class with someone else. By the way, my gpa is 3.76. So its not that I cant do it. Just dont make sense w/ workload!
Ridiculous. Malott is and will never teach the class, and you have TA's who have taken the course over the summer "teaching" you. When I say "teaching" I really mean they repeat what the book says and look at you like your idiots when you still don't comprehend what they're saying. If you want your social life to die, and you feel the need to memor
Took this class as a freshmen, even though it's a junior class. Took it for an honors credit. I had no interest in psych first. I ended up changing my major from computer science to psych after this class. Never really meet him, but his book is great as a teacher itself and you have to be stupid to not get an A.
This class drove me to therapy. Work load is ridiculous. Quizzes are off chapters in book and definitions you need to memorize word for word. Class is taught by grad students. Some like how the class forces you to study every day and this class is set up to help those willing to succeed at all costs. Not for your average students. you are warned.
I took Malott's PSY 360 my first semester (I transferred from a community college) so I never had any idea that his class was "harder" than any other kind of PSY class. In so, I was never spoiled by "easy" classes. I mean, people are complaining on here that they have to study before each class?
Is this class hard, yes. But it is designed so that you are the person who determines your grade. If you put in a lot of effort you will get an A, and if you don't then you won't. This is an amazing class, and 4600 is much easier if you take it with Malott as well.
Malott no longer teaches this class. However, his book is still really interesting and takes and interesting look at topics in psychology. My TA, Kellie Edmonds, was amazing and very helpful. Took it as an honors course. It is aheavy workload but totally worth it, and made me decide to change my maj. to behav. psych. Malott really knows his stuff.
HE IS THE MAN hands down
He and his TAs were obnoxious and offensive, and their methods were far more trouble than they were worth. I dropped the class and took Jack Michael's instead. (Fabulous teacher; too bad he retired.) Don't anyone feel bad about not meeting Dick Malott. You are much better off without such a memory.
The goal of academia should be to understand and handle competing arguments. The TA's and Professor are incapable of listening to any other argument and are closed minded. They have made me dislike a subject I am so passionate about, psychology. If it wasn't a required class for the psych major I would say run for your life. TERRIBLE!
This class is time consuming but worth it. YOU WILL learn and love Behavior analysis from this class. Class testing is awesome, instead of a few big tests there a bunch of small quizzes, making the class more forgiving.
He is a great Prof. his classes are more of a learning experience than a class. People who turn in the work and go to class will do great in this class. The book he wrote about the principals of behavior is literary the only book that I've cared about reading in my college career. TAKE THE CLASS!
By far the best experience I've had in learning about Behavior Analysis. This class changed my perspective on the world completely.
I LOVED this class. You hear people complain that it was hard etc. Well, you knew EXACTLY what you were getting in to. The grading is strict, but it reinforces(hehe) your studying for sure. The GSI's are wonderful and know their stuff. I'm so happy I got to meet Malott at the Final Fiesta. He's so much fun and has such a cool house!
Quite possibly the most amazing person I have ever met. 1400 changed my perspective on just about everything. People tend to either love Dr. Malott or hate him. The class is extremely hard with homework, readings, and quizzes for every class, but well worth it if you like Behavior Analysis and plan to go on in Malott's program.
He isnt in the class, it is a GSI teaching but the GSI doesn't teach. You have to sit in a horseshoe & go around the room & answer the questions from the hw, if you think its wrong the other students have to explain why its wrong! Its sad that the class is required! If I wasnt so close to graduating I would change my major because of this course!
This class is horrible. If you do not have to take it (or any Malott classes), don't. Vocab tests require you to memorize scientific definitions word-for-word. I have never been so stressed out during a semester than I was during this class!
This class changed my outlook on psychology, and I am now pursuing a degree in behavior analysis! Lauren DeClaire was my GSI and she is wonderful! Knows her stuff! The book is amazing, and if you study, read the book, and pay attention in class you will do fine!
This class is just a bunch of work. You have to memorize definitions, which if you're not good at that you're basically screwed. Its very interesting, just dont think its worth all the work they give you for a 1000 level class. He doesnt teach the course though, his TA's do. They are all pretty awesome. Overall it was just a very stressful class.
This class is tough. You have to know your definitions in order to pass, and know them word for word and be able to write them out. Once your grade drops a little it is tough to get it back up. The class is tough, Hilary Barns was my GSI and she is great and fun! Class is required so you pretty much have to suck it up and do the work.
This class is REALLY difficult. If you get an A and do extra credit, you can earn an extra credit for the semester. Unless you do that, this class isn't worth it. I can't believe it's a 1000 level course. You teach everything to yourself outside of class and share like 5 year olds in class. Final fiesta is also a joke.
This class was extremely difficult, and alot of work. Dr. Malott is missing in action, and did not teach the class. There is a grad student that is in charge of the class, but the students teaches themselves, and have to memorize word for word definitions. The class is way above a 1400 level, and I would take a lighter load of classes when taking it.
Class is difficult, but if you manage your time, do the homework, and go to class, you'll pass just fine. There's a lot of memorization but at a few terms a day, it wasn't difficult. I was expecting this class to be a lot harder and I got a Super A. Katie Mahaffy was my GSI and she did great! We didn't have a single lecture from Malott all semester
This class is horrible! Your basically teaching yourself throughout the entire semester! The weekly vocab quizzes are killers! You can get all the questions on the quiz right & the vocab wrong(which you have to know word for word) and still be failing. This class isn't worth it take it with another professor if possible or another school
HONESTLY THE MOST DIFFICULT CALSS IVE EVER TAKEN! However, the class is very interesting.. Quizzes 2 times a week sometimes up to 4 quizzes in one class (when they double up lectures) You also have homework packets every class. THEY ARE LONG! I was so scared to take this class but it ended up being kinda lovely. I got a B so it was worth it.
I walked into this class expecting to get a grade that was close to failing b/c of prior knowledge of the class and ended up with an A+. Do the homework, read the book and study the flashcards that THEY give you and you WILL pass the class. Quizzes every class period keep you on your toes with studying.
You have homework & quizzes in every class. Don't expect to see much of Dr. Malott, you will be working with his grad students. You have to memorize vocab WORD FOR WORD. DON'T take this course while you are taking other hard courses. Much of your time during the semester will be dedicated to this class. Easy material but they have HIGH expectations
I took this class as a freshman which was a huge mistake. It is a 1400 level Course so I did not think it would be too bad. There is a lot of reading to do everyday and the daily quizzes lack a pattern so you do not know what to study. The word for word definitions are hard to memorize and it almost seems this course lacks conceptual learning.
This class isn't worth the hassle. You memorize definitions WORD FOR WORD and they are long definitions, don't take 1400 with classes that are more difficult. You will be dedicating most of your time to this class. If possible wait until the summer and take it with Dr. Spates you will learn a lot more I received an A. he's also a very nice man.
You will be with a graduate student. Extremely difficult to study the definitions word for word. Multiple quizzes every class. No final. So much work it wasn't enjoyable.
1400 is an incredibly difficult class. It is absolutely NOT a 1400 level. Chances are you will never actually meet Dr. Malott. His graduate TAs run the entire course. The classes are 10-15 students. Prepare for memorizing word for word definitions and having up to 4+ quizzes a day. Participation is a must. The course pack is a life saver.
4 - credit course explains why it is so difficult. BS grading scale. Must memorize definitions word for word. Homework every class. Taught by TAs. Virtually teach yourself all the information and then have class to take quizzes. Heavily graded on quiz scores. Very strange set up of how class time and educating works.
Okay, this class is really hard but it is needed for the behavioral major. you have to really understand the chapter before you get to class and depending on your GA is if you will go into detail about the chapter. it's a lot of work but i personally found it interesting and got the Super A.
Attention PSY majors! Yes, it's a lot of work; BUT- Amazing. I absolutely hate studying, and I currently have an A in the class with a month to go. I found a passion in this study, and my GSI and Dr. Malott have begun that passion for me. The way the class is set up is designed to help you succeed. Just do what you're told, and you will pass.
I took this class as a required class and was scared for it. They lay everything out in a way that if you just read and come to class prepared you'll get a good grade. You should expect to teach yourself a little, but there are lectures to ask questions. Overall it wasn't a bad class; your GSI is there to help.
Make sure you get the course pack and book ASAP, otherwise you will be lost. Be sure to look at the ridiculous grading matrix in your course pack. If you get lower than I think an 82% on homework, quizzes, or participation you won't pass. This is the dumbest class i've ever taken. Be prepared to read the entire textbook as well. Good luck.
Yes this class is very time consuming- but it has been my favorite class at wmu. The course pack gives you already printed flashcards which are very helpful and the textbook is the best. The book is not like any other college text book and is the only textbook i have EVER read cover to cover. Its easy to read and understand and gives funny examples
The syllabus and grading system for this class is clear-cut and extremely beneficial. The course prepares you for the real world of behavior analysis, instead of just an "easy A" like most of the psych classes I've taken. You truly learn a lot. The effort put in will reflect the final grade.
Anyone who complains about this class being impossible clearly isn't used to having to actually make an effort and study. You can't be a lazy person and take this class. I was terrified to take it but ended up with a B. I enjoyed the material and I loved my GSI. Lots of homework, but it's only to help you understand. Stay on track & you'll do fine.
The class moves pretty quickly and you have a quiz every day but the GSI goes over them with you each day before you take it. You have a homework assignment due every day that goes along with the chapter you're on but it helps a lot with the quizzes. The project at the end of the semester is extremely easy to do.
Take this course at a CC. You have quizzes twice a week and homework packets due twice a week. Unless you are trying to be a behavioral analyst then this course is not for you. You teach yourself the information from doing the packets. The TAs only review what you read before taking the quiz so you already have to know the information
A 1000 level course made to feel like a grad school course. Tests every day. No extra credit. There are "OAP'S" which are fake extra credit. Many people failed. Nobody earned a "super A" in our class. I will not be taking a Malott class EVER again.
THIS CLASS IS VERY INTENSE! You will have to work very hard in this class. Quizzes every single class, homework, memorizing the definitions word by word. I didn't hate it and I learned a lot. Just make sure you're on top of it because it is not easy. And Richard Malott bothered me and some of the stuff about him I don't like.
I loved this class! In the matter of 1 semester, I learned so much. This class is quiz heavy, a quiz every time you come to class, but it is so worth it due to how much you are learning! There is no opportunity for extra credit but there are OAP's which I would take advantage of. I ended up earning a super-duper A. Hard work pays off in this class.
Honestly alarming content at times, such as the idea of using *oxygen* as a form of deprivation. Also incredibly disrespectful and almost flirtatious to the girls in the class. Would not touch even the content in this class with a ten foot pole.
