Tough grader, but you'll learn a lot from his class. Always available and easy to talk to.
he is so mean and tough grader!
HE IS A REALLY REALLY TOUGH GRADER!! IT's like all you do in his class is talk and he will crack up jokes. He is a really nice and funny guy. But when it comes to the essays he is a really harsh grader. His Final is take home but it's really hard.
I hate him!!!
he's hard!!!!!!!!!!
This refers to the online course. The instructor doesn't even instruct. We're just given reading (a lot) from the text book and tested on it. His tests are very difficult to do well on and are unclear. I'm getting an A, but barely.
One of the best professors I have ever had. I had him for four semesters, and I learned so much. He is a very brilliant man. You must be willing to work hard, but if you do it will definitely pay off. Not a class for someone who just wants to get by.
What a bunch of wimps! Of course Mascolo is a tough grader, this approach is called "teaching". Get used to it. He is the most demanding teacher I have ever had, I also learned more from him than any professor. If you need help he's always ther
He is a great guy. he really cares about the students. His class is not easy but I got a whole lot out of it
hate him!
Great class. Demanding, but worth it. I think he's adorable too.
This is a tough course only 3 tests and there is so much to cover..he's a good teacher but if you're taking too many units already you may get swamped
difficult class if you dont pay attention and dont read, but totally doable. his lectures and presentation is hilarious and he's there if you need help, esp after tests.
If you thought psych was gonna be an easy major, maybe you should look into sociology. 7 will blow your mind, read the text thoroughly, use study guide, go to office hrs. 9A/9B show up, read, take good notes. He's really funny, don't be deceived.
One of the nicest, best teachers I have ever had!!! Learned a lot and he gave challenging essays. If you write a goodd essay, take him.
this class is tough! Do the reading!! and GO TO CLASS! his tests are pretty much entirely off his lectures. don't expect an 'A' unless u study ur azz off! he is really funny though and u will learn if u go to class.
The online class is hard! You have to be self initiated and really read. It is soooo much reading. He grades hard too, I was 1 point away from a B and he wouldn't give extra credit and he actually gave me the C. :o(
Great Teacher!!! If you study and read and acutally put some effort into the class, you will get an A. He is upfront about the requriments and what you need to do to get a good grade.
he's a good comedian but the worst teacher ever. he bases your grade ONLY on tests and 1 paper. checks attendance, which is the weirdest thing because he doesnt count attendance toward your grade. he thinks kids are devils and i think he's just miserable.
As long as you pay attention in class, take good notes, and keep up with the reading, you can get an A.
He's hilarious. As long as you do all of the reading and come to class, it's not hard to get a good grade. He is very approachable if you have any questions. Everything he writes on the board, except for his random and funny unnecessary drawings, is on the test so make sure to pay attention.
mr mascolo.. wat a relief.. comic relief that is.. good break from mundane skool life.. u will get an easy B/A if u just show up and take decent notes.. eeasy to participate in class. has class's attention.. tests r a breeze.. GOOD LUCK SUCKAS
Great prof. He really is funny, and Tall!!! His tests arent based on lecture very much, so reading the text will be important. INteresting subject besides the instructor, so it makes the class more bearable. His tests are somewhat hard
What a great time I had in that class! I would seriously laugh out loud during class because he is hilarious. He is also a good teacher. Make sure you read the book really well and pay attention to what is written on the board. He draws horrible representations of random things he's talking about :)
Mascolo is a great teacher. he loves what he does and he is very funny.
funniest prof. ever!!! But i very hard class. If you want to pass you can't miss lectures!!!
I his critical thinking class. He is flippin histerical. Your' sides will hurt from laughing so hard. He isn't an easy A but if you show up, take notes, and read the book you will get an A.
I was scared this class would be hard, but it was the easiest class I took this semester. He is an amazing teacher, very funny, very kind, and he loves what he does. You dont want to stop paying attention because you might miss a joke!!
This is a hard class, I wouldn't take Psy. 7 unless you have to as a major requirment. He's a good instructer the course just covers to much material. One the first test of the semester out of a total of 40 students only seven passed. Read the book, study hard, and use the books review material.
Took him online-good class-keep up with the reading and the notes and you will do well. I'll take him for another class if I don't kill myself taking the rest of my reqs first.
Very intelligent, sweet, funny man. Great teacher, and cute as psychologists get. Tests are tough, but the material is interesting so you should do well if you are interested in the subject.
he's great!!!!!!!!!
He is a great teacher and so funny. I will definatly take him for Psych 9A. One of the best teachers at El Camino.
Prof. Mascolo is amazingly funny and though I've laughed in this class more than any other, he still manages to deliver insightful lectures chockful o' info. I have learned tons. His tests are difficult, but he's willing to help out with anything you need. Plus, he's hotter than lava.
He's so funny, but a very tough grader. He might be chill in class, but don't take that kind of approach with his essays. Very helpful, really helps you relate to the topic, and it's an interesting topic anyways. Take his class :)
Very difficult class; lots of technical material. He is an excellent lecturer, but has poor attendance. It would be very helpful to have more time for questions, but we are always running behind and having to rush through material. This course requires a lot of study time outside of class, and internet research to find simpler explanations.
I grew to despise him. Throughout the semester, my view of him went down everyday. His funny comments became cynical remarks that upset me and made me angry. I wish that he would learn to be more compassionate as a human being and would allow more time for questions. He doesnt seem to like his job, he needs to find something else to do. Avoid him.
Not the easiest class but he made it enjoyable. He likes to tell jokes even though people don't always get them. Doesn't give study guides so outside-of-class studying is a MUST. Won't bother you if you dose off but you miss a lot if you do. Put effort into the class and all will be well. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HIS OFFICE HOURS.
This class is intence but easy to understand if you study and ask questions. He will teach you many things not only Psych 9B but everything else!
Prof. Mascolo has chosen a great text, very interesting subject. His lectures are great, and if you do the website's "Grade Aids" passing the exams is easy.
I LOVED this teacher. it waz 2 bad his class waz so early (8am). definately keeps u entertained and into the lecture. best thing is 2 read the material b4 class & make use of his office hours... especially b4 an exam!
It was very unclear what we were suppose to do in his class but I still got a pretty good grade. He is not a bad teacher you just have to get use to his teaching style.
Dr. Mascolo is a very cool and funny teacher. In order to pass this class you must really want to learn what he is teaching. Also using all of the material that comes with the book for his class is excessfully useful, i.e. cd, workbook, etc. He is fair and very helpful. Do not miss lectures as all of his tests are based on them. Recommended!!!
He is a Great teacher but hard, I love his class. just remember to take good notes and actually read the text, dont worry the text is great so you will enjoy it. He is extreamly funny. I would take him again, and i am for psych 9B YOU SHOULD BUY THE GRADE AID IF YOU WANT AN A!!!!
This class has substance! Dr. Mascolo is an engaging, relevant lecturer. Although tests are open-book and notes, there is barely enough time to do calculations, so organized notes and pre-test drilling are essential. Two research reports per APA format make up the lab portion of the class. The class is a good investment of time and hard work.
This is a great teacher.
Interesting lectures and entertaining. However, very difficult material and he talks too fast!
this teacher is mysterious at first, but he is a great teacher because his lectures are full of humor. At first, the jokes seemed to be irrelevant, but later, I started seeing a connection to the course material. I recommend this teacher, but you have to study a lot on your own because the lectures are short and this guy seems so busy.
THIS TEACHER IS WONDERFUL HE HELPS YOU AS MUCH AS HE CAN BEST PART ATTANDANCE NOT AN ISSUE VERY FUNNY LOVE IT. P.S. PAY ATTENTION TO HIS JOKES HIDDEN TEST CUES/CLUES. THE CLASS HOWEVER IS HARD.
Very interesting teacher, very interesting course. Highly recommended! Follows guideline of book, you read the chapters at home yourself. A few videos, and his lectures are mostly on personal expierience in the field. Open book/open note tests. He's really funny and adds to the course material very effectively. Definitely take him!!!
If you made it through 9A, keep going. 9B is your chance to use those skills you've acquired. It is not nearly as difficult as 9A. You get to choose your own research topic and follow it through to the end, including surveying ECC students and analyzing data. It all comes together in 9B.
This class offers a wide variety of insight into phobias, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, suicide, childhood disorders, disorders among elderly, etc. Very interesting, with the added benefit of a teacher whose been out there, in the field and knows his stuff. Dr. Mascolo's wit and humor make those 3 hours fly by.
I took this professor for PSYCH 15 AND 9A. He is a great professor who really knows his stuff. His 15 class was 3 hours long once a week but went by fairly quickly. He is also always willing to help you out with anything you don't understand. Pay attention in lecture, it's the best thing you can do if you're not one to study a whole lot.
Dr. Mascolo not only has personality, wit, and sense of humor. He is an amazing instructor. Especially, when it comes to statistics. He makes the subject itself more interesting. Psychology 9A can be a challenge. Expect to take good notes, and read read read. Need I say more.
Mascolo is a great teacher. It's pretty amazing how much he knows about psychology. Especially the biological aspects, which are VERY difficult. There is no way to get around it, this class is hard and he's the only one who teaches it. Read the book. Doesn't care about attendance but the bulk of the info is in his lectures.
Dr. MASCOLO IS AN INCREDIBLE PROFESSOR. LISTEN TO HE'S JOKES LOTS OF INFO IN THEM. WILL HELP. VERY CARING BE PREPARE TO READ EVENTHOUGH HE DOES NOT TAKE ATTENDANCE YOU MISS CLASS YOU MISS ALOT.
GREAT TEACHER. VERY FUNNY TELLS LOTS OF JOKES. SHOWS ABOUT 5 MOVIES. HE SEEMS TO BE SICK AND LATE A LOT HAHA. HIS TESTS ARE FAIR JUST READ THE BOOK. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN HANDLE STUDYING 20 HOURS A WEEK. THATS IF YOU WANT AN A.
I don't understand "no homework". How does he even know if the students are understanding the information being given. I wouldn't recommend him to any one who likes structure. It's painfully obvious that he does not want to work or care about his students.
I love all science classes. This guy is a joke, and I would never recommend him to anyone I like.
Don't do it unless you like self inflicting pain!
The worst professor ever. He expects you to know everything. He won’t tell you what’s going to be covered on the test. Basically you have to study everything.he is the most vague person. He wants everyone to fail. Save yourself the trouble. Im an A student and even with hard studying i got a D STAY AWAY
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED HIM!!! HE'S FUNNY AND THE CLASSES ARE ALWAYS INTERESTING. THERE'S NO HW AND NO ASSINGMENTS JUST 3 TESTS WHICH ARE FAIRLY EASY IF YOU STUDY (AND YOU'RE ALLOWED TO USE THE BOOK FOR 1 HR) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND DR.MASCOLO IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A GREAT TEACHER
The worst professor I ever had! He purposely leaves out information and gives vague lectures so you can figure it out for yourself for the test. If this was Romper Room, fine. But not a statistics class! It was the most stressful experience I've ever had. Caution: don't take him!
Dr M is brilliant man, full of knowledge & a talented comedian! That is the key to teaching & learning complicated subjects like psych: make it fun! I am now continuing with psych @ UCI and almost every lecture builds upon the knowledge Dr M has taught me! READ + READ + take lecture notes + STUDY + STUDY + STUDY = A. He's a great asset to ECC & you
tests relied mostly on the book, were short, and covered the general topics. lectures were a little long, but not all necessary. quite a few videos which were interesting. kinda funny guy.
It's like watching stand-up comedy. Increased my interest in the subject. He doesn't just go over the book in class. He expects you to do the reading on your own, and the class adds to that. Gives you many chances to improve your grade. If you read the material, you'll do fine.
this guy is so funny, interesting class, gotta do the reading of course but easy. he is a really good teacher, makes the time go by fast, he is hilllarious! =)
He's a hottie, but a whiner. It keeps him slightly off-topic most of the time. But, if you want to learn, he's your man. The stuff that comes out of his mouth is worth wading through his life experience (maybe we're all whiners). I loved the class, but it was hard work.
he's not hot, sorry... but he is a great teacher and he helps you so much. i learned alot. you just have to be willing to put in ALOT of extra time to really understand. if you are lazy don't bother w/ this class
EXCELLENT professor. Took his class a couple of years ago. He is very demanding, so you need to know in advance whether you are really committed to stats. A lot of people dropped in my year because they didn't expect his requirements (he's also hard on doing the refs. sections well - prepares you well for psych. major if that's what you want).
Really have to work at getting an A. He weeds through the book and adds to the topic through constant story telling, which ends up being an extrenious short essay question. Lectures always turn into essay questions even if he never quite gets there. Tests are usually based on his interpretation and perception not yours. Vents alot in 9A.
He is extremely funny and adorable. Definitely a hottie...in his own way! He is very knowledgeable, but gets side-tracked very easily. Take good notes and only read on what he lectured.
Both 7 & 9B(exams) heavily consisted of textbook materials. If you read the book, you'll pass the class easily. Lectures help, but he tends to get side tracked every 2 minutes. So I didn't really go to class, but still got an A in psych 7 and B in 9B. Overall, very easy class. Take him!
while he is interesting and funny at times he does go off topic A LOT. Tests are diffucult so you need to go to class everyday and READ your textbook. This is not an easy class by any means. i consider my self a "B" student and this class is very difficult for me. there are NO assignments only 4 tests and optional final. So study your buts off!

Prof Mascolo is smart, funny, & his stories are reflective of his years of experience, but can distract you from taking good notes. If you have a (?) ask in class. By mid-semester, you will not be able to get to him during office hours. DO NOT SKIP THE READING. No roll call taken, but lecture notes and (VIDEOS!) are at least half of your grade.
Professor Mascolo is very knowledgeable. I took both Psyc 9A & 9B. Extremely helpful, and he elaborates on any question you may have regarding the material in class. He was an awesome professor. I wish there were more out there like him.
Mascolo thinks that he is funny - he is not. His class is boring an it takes him 30 minutes to make 1 point. He talks of things that are not relevant. Most of the people in my class had trouble scoring high on test. His test are not straight forward. I asked him for help many times and he was not helpful. He does not use slides. He is a late bird.
Mascolo is a hot tamale. He is an excellent professor and his lectures are very interesting. Go to class. Do the readings...and actually digest what you read, and you'll be fine.
i loved this class; Dr Mascolo was funny, told a lot of jks. he, hwevr, dint give any study guids. so reading evry assingned pages of the chapter in the book was required (highly). this was the only way i got an A in the class. exams r easy if u read. exams r shot multiple test, and one paragraph easy. "highly recommended"!!!!
SLOW DOWN! maybe you just need an easy-peasy honors class to stay in HTP. THIS IS NOT IT! it's not because he's hard - because he isn't. he is not only vague, but scattered in all his thoughts. in contrast, his tests are VERY specific and you find yourself totally lost b/c he never went that in-depth. my only C at El Camino.
He is super lazy. He just lecture about non sense that won't come up on the test, and puts videos that are relevant to the subject at the matter but in the long run won't help you during the test. He does not use power point and just talk. Lastly he just plays videos for the whole entire 3 hr lecture. Worse Prof ever!
reading is a must!!!! his teaching skills are dreadfull but he has a good personality.... not recommended
this class is impossible, and it's not because it was an honors class. no powerpoint, no study guide. the tests are REALLY specific, and even if you read the chapters, it won't help you on the test. he's funny and a nice teacher, but it's a hard class!
Professor Mascolo is an excellent teacher if you want to learn to critically and analytically think. Take good lecture notes (including notes on any videos he shows), do the reading, and think about the material...and you will get an A.
Dr. Mascolo was my favorite professor at El Camino. He makes lectures interesting,is relevant to the topic. I had him for two classes in a row this semester and I was not bored! He is funny! He has a lot of experience in Psych. that he is willing to share with his students. Attend class, study, take notes and you will do well.
I also took him for 2 classes back to back and while it wasn't that hard of a class, it was hard to figure out what was going on. He took a lot of time to pass back tests, didn't really follow any sort of plan and seemed to just wing it when it came to tests. Definitely study the chapters and notes. I would take again, because he's nice and funny.
I love this professor. I would like to address previous comments. He does NOT talk about irrelevant things. He uses real life experiences to fortify the material. The videos are used in the same fashion. He expects you to take your own notes. Reading the required material is a MUST. Honors classes are work, but he makes it fun & interesting.
Great guy. horrible teacher. He tries to be funny with every sentence he speaks, which only works less then half the time. Book is useless. His lectures... eh. Tests are too hard. I don't recommend him at all.
HORRIBLE! Avoid at all costs. You will get NOTHING out of his lectures, and many test questions are NOT in the book. Highly unorganized and frequesntly misses class. He does NOT check or reply to emails (it even says this on his syllabus) and does NOT attend office hours. Does not care about students. AVOID!!!
He can't teach! He hates gay people and thinks he knows everything even if the textbook begs to differ!
He tries to be funny but he is not. He's ALWAYS LATE. The day of the exam he is late and he doesn't give you extra minutes. The A.P.A paper is hard to understand what he wants on the paper, although he gives you all the data. Lab is a waste of time. The book is unavailable on the bookstore you have to order it online.
nice guy but this class is impossible. i had to drop the class, id rather have a "w" than the d/f i was gonna end up with. his lectures are irrelevant to the test, late, unorganized. take someone else
Honestly the most unhelpful professor I've ever met. Yes, he's always late for class. He spends 30 minutes on one point just to throw out endless personal examples. No study guide, no hand-out, non-organized lectures... All these make this class extremely hard to follow. I won't recommend him.
I have taken 3 of his classes. Yes he is late, however he does not care if you come to class or not. Attendance is only mandatory on exam dates. He is organized, but does not get to all of his material because of his real-life examples which are somewhat entertaining. Does not hand out study guides, but tells you exactly what to focus on in class.
jumps around lecture material. standard of teaching does not meet the quizzes/tests difficulty. he is not bad at teaching, his tests are hella hard and tricky. eg. (a. blah b. blah2 c. a&b d. a only e. none of the above) "one could be right, but b is kind of right so it could be a or b so is it?" this is how you're going to think while answering
THE most disorganized instructor and course and I have 3 degrees, inc. masters. He blamed coursecompass for chaos; another coursecompass class no prob! Repeats pts to death. Made cool class a mess and uninteresting and much more difficult
I've taken all of Dr. Mascolo's classes. Here is what I like about them: 1. He treats you like an adult. 2. Tests are often (if not all or partially) open book and open notes. 3. He makes the material interesting and keeps up to date. Bottom line: If you take good notes, pay attention, do the reading and ask questions-- it is not hard to earn an A.
Worst teacher ever. He is unorganized, always late, even on test days! He leaves right after class. His lectures are hard to follow so tests are even harder to take. He once finished writing test questions on the overhead as we were taking the test. He cancels class a lot. He isn't very clear on what he wants out of the APA paper. AVOID!!
Interesting lectures with a taste of dark humor. Overall, the tests were difficult through out the first half of the semester towards the end everything got a lot easier. Tip: Take good notes, listen carefully!! Most of the time the tests are based on what he said in class & not in the book.
Sometimes he hot, sometimes he's not. What a range and what a show. Takes dry subjects and makes them pretty entertaining (on a good day)... on a bad day, I'd study his case file (right)!
My biggest pet peeve about this teacher is his absences. He has office hours but rarely commits to them, so you'll have to catch him when you can. He's also absent alot! So if you plan on taking him, do plan to waist gas/bus fare to get to school. Tips: Be self sufficient, read the book, and you'll do fine!
I truly enjoyed Professor Mascolo's class, he made abnormal psych even more interesting than I had anticipated. You do EARN your grade but the tests are open book/open notes so doing poorly is kind of ridiculous. I got a "C" which I am embarrassed about but he was very easy to go to for help. Be honest with him and work hard.
Dr. Mascolo's was my one of my favorite teacher at elco and influenced me to change my major. He treats you like an adult He is not going to spoon feed the material to you. I think he is funny and his real life stories are relevant to the material especially considering his experience. Ask questions and take the class serious and you be fine.
Dr. Mascolo is an INCREDIBLE professor. You will learn a lot. He puts emphasis on concepts and tests whether you grasp the material or not. This guy knows how to teach and doesn't waste your time- but it's on you to be responsible for your studies and not fall behind. Great prep for a 4 year college.
Horrible teacher, he is all over the place and test on random things in his lecture. You still need to read the book well to pass. My 3.86 GPA took a hit when he gave me a C. Seriously avoid if u can.
I got an A because he used some sort of curve, although he says he doesn't curve. My grade was probably the best in the class and my percent was around 85. I was one of few not to fail the midterm. Avoid unless u like to read and teacher yourself.
Mascolos a cool guy. yeah he wont show up a lot but for psych 15 he really entertained us. hes a good teacher and you NEED THE BOOK cause its open notes. i got an a its not that bad jus tough it out at first. good luck
Terrible teacher! Has interesting stories but goes on too much about that and not about the information. when it comes to tests, he DOES NOT give a study guide and just says this, this, and this chapter. Doesnt like to repeat himself and if you miss the class WITHOUT help you catch up.
Hands down the most skilled, thought provoking, stimulating professor I have ever had. He's a REAL teacher and makes it nearly impossible to BS your way through his classes. That being said if you actually pay attention and engage yourself in his classes you will learn a ton and probably have an incredible experience. Four year university quality.
Coolest professor ever!
If you dont like math than you are screwed b/c that's what statistics is. They're just formulas. Learn them, practice them, and try hard to listen to what he's saying because his yamering appears on the test. If you dont understand something ask, he he has to clarify. 3 tests, 1 cheat sheet allowed. Good luck!
Dr. Mascolo is probably the best professor I have ever had. He delivers information in an entertaining and stimulating manner, which helps not only to understand the concepts, but also to remember them. He is very knowledgeable; you have much to gain from taking any of his classes.
I took Prof. Mascolo's courses in 2000 (14 years ago!). He still sticks out in my mind as the best professor I've ever had and I went on to attend UCSD after El Camino. His passion for teaching and is overall a well-rounded intellectual and person.
I took his class Online. Dr. Mascolo is a very fair teacher. Very helpful and funny. He offered a lot of extra-credit, so if you study and do all the work, an A is not very hard. Highly recommend him.
He is a cool teacher because of his humor and jokes. But he isn't a good teacher. He talks a lot in class and its hard to follow his points and emphasis on which parts of the book he wants us to focus on. He cuts us slack by curving, but he could easily avoid that by giving us a better lecture and maybe write some notes on the board.
Open Book/Notes for multiple choice. Closed for short answer. Very funny man. Only 3 test and he did offer extra credit on the exam. Grades on a curve. He does not take roll, shows up late and sometimes class is cancelled. He teaches at Perpendine and gives us the same lecture. Highly recommend. Just stay until the end. Vary caring man.
I did not like how he teaches. He jumps from Psych 7 to person life and goes on LONG TANGENTS. For a 2 hour class he was very frustrating. You MUST come to class because some test questions are based on lectures. Study HARD!! He is passable is you study and make sure you understand most of his lectures and the book.
best teacher ever, if you are a psych major it is absolutely necessary to take mascolo, he prepares you for education beyond the scope of a 2 yr, knows what he talk about, his "tangents" are refreshing, interesting, funny and help you remember the material. however if not a psych major, avoid because he makes you prepare and think critically.
Statistics is hard enough, but he makes it enjoyable. Read the book! If you really want to understand the material. His lectures are short and sweet. He tells a lot of jokes and personal stories, so can get a bit confusing. Overall, I enjoy his class because of the challenge.
He's quiet, so sit up front. He's usually late to class so he doesn't take attendance. His tests are based on what he says in lectures, so listen up and take good notes, even if he is telling a story. Funny and super nice, but sometimes hard to follow or understand. Not everyone's cup of tea, but some grow to like him and take more courses from him
Most interesting professor yet and the most challenging. He really knows his stuff. Very humorous and tends to go off topic with jokesstories, but he is helpful. Read the book and do your best to understand the concepts. He's not easy, but he's not hard either.
Dr. Mascolo is a fantastic human being, very caring and always approachable. He is a bit disorganized, but if you work with him, you will love his class. Short funny lectures. I am really bad at Math, but I got a B. Just ask the lab-teacher about the concepts you don't understand in Mascolo's lecture. Tests based on lecture, so better don't skip.
I really wish that he was more organized. He was all over the place sometimes. He confused me so much. His test are only available for little over 24 hours. Lets say he post a test Monday at 2pm, you have until Tuesday at 10pm to take it. It's easy to forget when you're used to online classes that make test available the whole week. READ!!!
One of my favorite teachers at El Camino. Very knowledgeable, a fine human being. I laughed tears during lectures. I have Math Anxiety and Dr. Mascolo was so helpful and always available for questions. Taking 9B right now with him of course! High quality lectures! very fair teacher and grader. Highly recommend.
A word of advice: don't take this class during the summer. Grading's pretty straightforward: midterm, final, 14 section quizzes but he drops the lowest four. He says he's an easy grader but the midterm was impossible because the early chapters are really technical. Often repeats what he thinks is important three or four times, but he rambles a lot.
Took it over the summer. It was a tough class but if you really put in the hours you can get an A. I studied very hard and definitely earned my A. His lectures verge on useless. This class was half BioPsych and half a trip down Mascolo's memory lane.
The midterm and the quizzes before the midterm are the most tough (I failed all of them even though I studied all day, everyday). This seemed to be the case with everyone. Subsequently, about 25 of the class dropped were dropped. However, after the midterm, the quizzes became manageable and the final was a piece of cake.
First off, Professor Mascolo is an amazing professor. Exams were moderately difficult (1st open bookmultiple choice, 2ndessayshort answer), but if you pay attention to his lecturestake really good notes and read the material, you'll be golden.
Richard Mascolo is a very inspirational professor. He is SMART. Expect to read and study, study, STUDY. His classes are great because you really learn! If you are lazy and looking for an easy grade, then do not take him . He provides his own notes but make sure to read everything . He wants us to learn.
Dr. Mascolo is a very intelligent professor. His way of lecturing will require your full attention, for his exams are based on lectures and the book. University quality and he also teaches the same class at Pepperdine. Very nice when you ask questions after class as well !
Worst teacher I've ever had in all my schooling. Most distracted person. Extremely poor communication skills, eye contact, annunciation. Lectures were always a mystery. Should not be teaching. All I can say is GOOD LUCK with that guy. You truly are all on your own and that class is hard enough as it is.
13 section quizzes & only 2 exams. Drops lowest 4 quizzes. Everything based mostly on book & a bit on lecture notes; must read book to pass. Only have 13 min to take quiz (1 chance) & 1.5 hrs to take exam (2 chances). Before exams, gives exam prep quizzes that were e.c. Poor at responding to emails. No review to check what ?'s you got wrong. Easy.
This professor has hilarious stories and is a pretty nice guy. Unfortunately he is unreachable outside of class. If you have a question make sure to wait in line after class. He comes late often so don't try to come early and don't attempt his office hours for help. Abnormal Psych is hard, I wish I had taken it with a more supportive teacher.
Took Psych7 online during summer and learned a lot! Don't think it's easy cause its online and you have the book in front of you. It was a challenge but if you take the time to READ (book and lecture notes) you will get an A! 2 quizzes/wk, midterm, final. He drops 4 lowest quizzes. Met him on campus once to review a quiz, great professor!!
Took him as an online class, it was really easy. Just a quiz every week, a mid term and a final. You must read the book and take notes, although he does give some note on key points. Overall really easy class.
He is a great teacher. Although, sometimes it is hard to understand what he is saying because he is just too smart. Entertaining stories. All his stories are important, some appear in the quizzes.
Throughout my few semesters at El Camino I continue to succeed in all my classes and this class was tough to say the least ( I'm so thrilled I got a C). If you are not a Psych major I don't recommend taking this class... nice guy but very unclear and can't reach him outside of class.
Tough teacher . He's not really supportive. He is a nice guy and funny but he is hard to follow sometimes. If you are someone who likes working independently with little teacher guidance than he's for you.
You're barely able to follow along due to the fact that he rambles & his poor communication skills. He is not supposed to be teaching given the fact that he sits in one place the whole lecture! What I learned in college: teachers who just stay in one place the whole lecture are less likely to be a reliable source of you passing the class.
He does sit in one place the whole time but attendance is literally not mandatory. He does however give you his lecture notes and you have the book to read. Plus all he gives out are the section quizzes once a week! THE FINAL AND MIDTERM ARE ONLINE and it wasn't an online class
This material was really difficult and it involves reading chapters and notes a couple of times. weekly quizes and I think he dropped 4 or 6. there is occasional extra credit. could be a little quicker with emails. The 2 test are a giant chunk of your grade, so study the study guide thoroughly.
By far the worst professor I have ever taken at El Camino. His lectures are all over the place and make no sense. Almost everyone I know that took this class failed or dropped. Lucky to get by with a C. Even taking notes , reading the book and reading his notes are not helpful for quizzes/test. If you are good at teaching yourself then take him
Literally like 75% my mind is just like what? He'll talk about something we're reading about then next thing you know he's talking about his knee and how he can't drive and rambling about the projector then his sister? He's very knowledgeable but super confusing. Doesn't stop for questions and when he does answer, it's not really clear
Very smart and inspiring but not a good teacher. He gets off topic too much and shows a lot of videos . Very confusing.
He is a very intelligent man and knows his stuff but he talks quick and his lectures are short notes on the textbook and uses antidotal stories to make his points. All of the assignments are online and so are the tests including the final. Take his online class.
I think this professor is really great if you just listen and do your part as a student to read your text. He even provides notes and his exams are literally from the book, his notes, & his discussions (all exams/quizzes are online and u can take at home so). No attendance w/c is great but you'll miss a lot of useful and hilarious stuff
I took Moscolo twice for psych 7. In person and online I liked him way better online. He is absent a lot, goes off topic, in person. Online was easier he simply gave our hw, lot of section quizzes and 3 big tests. He does a great job on sectioning what we need to focus on,so you dont waste time on unimportant topics. Book definitely needed.
Dr. Mascolo isnt a great a great professor unless you like to be thrown off topic. He just rambles and rambles not even about the work mainly his life. The work doesnt make sense when you are trying to keep up with him. He just cant explain that well. Math isnt an easy subject for me personally. He made it worst. Its so easy to zone out there.
The only down side of this class is that Dr. Mascolo always goes on a long tangent during lectures. HOWEVER! He does give incredible amount of points on Revel. All tests are in class and open book. Psych is easy science, so if you have an understanding of a wide vocabulary and do the online homework, you will get an A.
Prof. Mascolo is very nice and sometimes funny, but his stories are repetitive and way too boring. Our class was about 4 lectures behind Revel because he would drag out stories for tooo long. Wish the class wasn't boring and wished this class had a balance of lecture and online notes.
I took his class online, and it was a decent experience. Just read the book and take notes, and you'll be fine! You also have multiple attempts to take the tests, and all the answers can be found in the textbook/lectures. He doesn't always reply to emails, but was always available to talk during online after hours, and was reachable through phone.
Psych9B is hard!!!!!!!!!! This class is very challenging and not a walk in the park. Like any psych course if you don't understand the context at the conceptual level then you will not understand the later chapters to come... He is accessible but it is ultimately up to you to study hard! Consider yourself warned.
Terrible professor, will not respond to your emails and never even cared about the class. Always uploaded assignments late and only gave effort towards his other classes. Don't take this professor as they are careless and lazy and unaccommodating with the pandemic and online classes.
