Tries hard and means well. He is very organized and prepared for his lectures but grades take along time to get back. Lectures are pointless but you have to go to take the quizzes. The lab section sucks and are extremely boring.
good lecturer, however his TA's are idiots and something with this class is extremely wrong. way too much work for a 1 credit class. take another (L)
You can tell he tries really hard, but the class is so boring. At least hes attractive
I wish I didn't register for this class... I have to keep telling myself that he is hot so I won't feel too bad taking this this class
TAs grade all you're work, they're undergrads...class is a joke, prof. doesn't know how to teach, quizes seem like they're written by a damaged 4 year old. cutting yourself is much more enjoyable than attending this disjunct piece of $*** class.
Too hard for 1 credit he professor is not resonable at all. Screwed my grade because his undergrad TAs did not post some assignments till night before due. Would not let me makeup. Give him a few years to mature into a decent prof that cares what happens with his students before u take his class.
For his first time teaching a class, I'd say that he was pretty good. Yes, there was a good amount of work for this 1 credit "L" class, but when you compare it to other lab classes, it is a lot less work. Also, he was at the mercy of the administration. He gave extra credit, so stop whining!
He just likes to hear himself talk. Made the work waaay too hard for one credit. There are grad TA's and undergrad TA's and no one communicates with anyone, maybe they learned something from this semester, as it was his first time but I still don't recommend him.
He actually did a good job. I could see that he tried really hard to make the material interesting, but it’s definitely too much work for a one-credit class. Oh well, I got an A.
needs to learn how to be organized and how to lecture without droning. ridiculous amount of **** for one credit...TAs tried their best given the circumstances
Meant very well, but tried too hard to relate the material to the students, almost going overboard. Weekly quizzes were tricky and inconsistent as to difficulty week to week, and overall too much work for 1 credit. Professor was respectful of students and did a good job for his first time teaching.
lectures were pretty boring, but he tried really hard to make them interesting. the class should definitely have been worth more than 1 credit
very boring. very pompous. read the book and POWERPOINT NOTES AND DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. didnt read the notes and i got an "A-." a lot of reading for a one credit class. dont really recommend taking him. very disorganized. multiple choice quizzes are hard.
I worked my ass off to get an A in this class! too much work! I definitely studied more for this "one-credit" class than my anyother "4-credit" ones. I found his lecture pretty clear, he knows the material and the book is fun to read, but the labs were dreadful and the TAs weren't helpful at all!
the lecture is superboring. too much work for a one credit course. the lab assignments are not clear and hard to get good grade even you try hard.

He did an awsome job and I feel like you should really take this class. It was a little hard however and he talked over are heads somtimes
Everything is based off of his lectures and the readings. Pop quizzes are about every week. He doesn't care about sticking to the syllabus, so if a lot of questions are asked in class, a lot of time can be killed. He really knows his stuff and he's not hard to look at so :). Overall if you study for the test and go to class you should do well
He doesn't use a textbook so his lectures are curated from a combination of the non-assigned textbook material, readings, and then actual knowledge. 1/3 of the grade is going to come from pop quizzes so skipping class is a huge risk. His lectures are very interesting and he has great depth and insight on the topics that are covered. Great dude.
Liked him in the first two lectures after that really sucked. Having only 2 tests really messed with the grades and offers little to no mobility. Disappointed as I thought this would be a really great class.
Very interesting class. The grading can be a little unfair, and there isn't much opportunity to save yourself if you do poorly on 1 of the 2 tests. There are several pop quizzes worth 5 points which can be great if you do well, but I found the questions to be difficult at times and usually only got 3 or 4 out of 5. He posts the lectures online
This class isn't easy, but it is incredibly interesting. Mattson moves quickly but makes very clear sense. If you ask a question he will always give a ear, respectful, and in depth explanation. My only critique is there are few exams. If you mess up on either test, you're in trouble.
Amazing. I loved him. He gave two tests (mid-term and final) for my semester but he said when he teaches the course again he'll add a test or two to not make them both worth 40% of our grade. Tests are heavy but he puts all the notes online so easy to read from. Very glad I took the course with him.
Professor Mattson is obviously knowledgeable and passionate about his area of study. His notes are extensive but provided online and pop quizzes are fair. As this was only his second time teaching the course he was still working out the kinks but did his best to keep his approach academic. Generally likable.
Great teacher, super knowledgeable. His lectures are interesting as are the topics he discusses. While he's not an "easy A" his exams are fair and if you go to his lectures you'll know what to expect (except when he gives pop quizzes). He gives you tons of study material and posts the ppts online, which is pretty much all you need to study.
Enjoyable lectures, and always open to questions/discussion during class. No formal attendance policy, but there are pop quizzes, so it's risky to skip. Grade is based only on 2 exams and pop quizzes, so doing poorly on one can easily kill your grade. The exams themselves are fair, not too easy or hard. Nice guy and interesting subject matter.
Mattson is funny and relatable. His lectures are organized and easy to follow. It's pretty easy to get an A, as long as you study. He has random pop quizzes for participation credit, so you should go to class. The material in this course is really interesting and Mattson is great at explaining it and giving examples.
As long you do the readings, you'll be well prepared for class. However, the only grades were the pop quizzes, therefore you have to go to lectures in case there is one. He usually had them after a section or two is finished. Open to questions and lectures were interesting. Did not focus on neuroscience which I liked.
Prof. Mattson is a great professor. His lectures are so well taught you don't need the textbook at all. He provides study guides for each test. There are only 3 tests (including the final). Tests are pretty straightforward. Just study the guide he provides. 100% would take again
Such a great Professor & great to look at too. Explains things in detail & answers everyones questions. If you're confused he will explain things in more easier terms or relates it to everyday life. Only 3 tests which are all non cumulative and gives a clear study guide before each tests. You can pass without reading book & simply attending lecture
Professor Mattson is great! He's a good lecturer, and very knowledgable. He answers everyone's questions, and explains concepts in detail. His tests are not that hard, just do the reading guides and keep track of the lecture notes. Attendance also isn't mandatory, but he has pop quizzes (he drops one though). Overall great professor, and funny!
By far one of the most enjoyable courses I've ever taken. He's knowledgable and clearly passionate about what he's teaching and manages to make the lectures funny on top of it all. Always open to questions. Gives pop quizzes but they're super easy as long as you pay attention in class (5Q multiple choice T/F format). Definitely would take again!!!
One of the best courses I have taken at Binghamton. If you do the work and study a little bit each day, you won't have any issue on the tests. The class was graded on three tests and a random number of pop quizzes, but he gives you textbook reading guides which are similar to his test questions. Pop quizzes are easy and pretty much common sense.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. There are pop quizzes that are very easy. The grades are only based on three tests and pop quizzes so make sure you study. I never opened the textbook and got above 92 on every test. Just study the lectures and you will do great.
Dr. Mattson is one of my favorite professors I've ever had. He does give random attendance quizzes, but they're worth as much as an exam so it's an easy way to boost your grade. You can tell he loves teaching this class, which makes you love taking it.
Prof Mattson was my favorite professor freshman year. He has a real passion for what he is teaching and makes lectures interesting. He answers all questions with an in-depth explanation, making concepts easy to understand. He posts study guides and reading guides, making the textbook easy to follow. Pop quizzes are easy, just be in class!
Dr. Mattson cares more about you actually understanding the topic than anything else. All of the lecture slides and notes are posted online, and he adjusts the curriculum to the class. He's very open to questions and has no problem taking a whole class just to clarify questions. Tests are taking directly from the textbooks, so do the study guides
I loved having this teacher for PSYC 223! He was into what he was teaching, and showed that in his lectures! The test were difficult, but study guides are provided that cover most of the questions on the exams. Overall, he was a fair grader and made sure to only test us on what he was certain we covered. I highly recommend having this teacher!
He is an awesome prof and is really passionate about the class. Very nice and intelligent. To do well in this course, show up to class bc there r easy pop quizzes and do the assigned textbook readings and reading guides/exam study guides. Exams r very straightforward and are directly based on lectures slides and what he assigns from textbook.
Dr Mattson is one of the best professors Ive ever had (and one of the best looking). He makes the lectures super interesting and enjoyable. He always makes sure to answer all questions. Gives pop quizzes but they're super easy. They're only 5 questions and one is dropped. Definitely recommend taking this.
I love professor mattson!!! he makes sure everyone's questions gets answered and really wants us to understand the material. He cares more about his student's curiosities than staying on the curriculum, which is really cool. In my opinion the tests aren't difficult as long as you study. I definitely recommend taking one of his classes!
Gives a few pop quizzes, but as long as you were present during lectures or read the slides he posted you should have no problem. He is super receptive to questions, encouraging group discussion and curiosity within a large lecture hall. He has worked one on one with patients before and is able to tell real life experiences.
Prof Mattson gave very stimulating lectures that were both interesting and entertaining. There were a couple pop quizzes but if you go to class youll be fine. His tests are all multiple choice and not hard if you study the class notes
I LOVE Prof Mattson. He is so intelligent and passionate about his field. Lectures are super interesting. He is so receptive to questions and really cares about his students. Tests are based on study guides/reading guides. There are pop quizzes (5 ques. each), but as long as you pay attention in class, they're super easy. Loved this class, 10/10
Tests are based straight off the lecture slides (posted online) and textbook readings (not too long). His lectures are boring and he goes off on tangents and spends the entire class answering questions. Too bad you can't skip because he gives random pop quizzes! He did put several extra credit questions on the final which was nice.
Great professor, very intelligent. Gives pop quizzes that are easy to do well on as long as you pay attention in class. Three tests are each worth 25% of your grade, and the pop quizzes are averaged to makeup the last 25% of your grade. Gives study guides before the exam- as long as you do them the test should be easy. Really enjoyed this class!
Please take this class. I was bored at the beginning learning about history but after the first two weeks it was the most amazing class I ever took. I learned so much and developed a passion for behavior disorders. He is kind, caring, and started crying on the last day. He explains everything so its understandable and really teaches you. Love him.
I loved Behavior Disorders with Dr. Mattson. He cares so much about making sure everyone learns something from the class. He loves answering questions and will go out of his way to make sure every question is answered. His lectures are so interesting, and he is so passionate about the class. One of my favorite classes so far! WORTH IT!
Professor Mattson was overall a great professor and was really good at getting you interested in the material. He does go off on the occasional tangent, but overall his lectures are really solid. Make sure you take notes on everything in case of a pop quiz. Exams are pretty easy and there's only three total.
From what I understand, this was professor Mattson's first time teaching online. There were a few bumps along the way, but he made the class as engaging as he could given the circumstances. Taking good notes during the lectures for pop quizzes/exams and using study guides are pretty much all you need to worry about. Awesome professor.
Professor Mattson is amazing. He is a professor that cares about you learning and enjoying the content instead of just trying to teach test material. He incorporated a lot of his own experiences into the course that made it meaningful. Tests were super fair and you were given more than enough time. highly recommend.
He's a great teacher and explains concepts very well with examples. I just wish we had more things to be graded on. The class was only based on three exams and nothing more. So every exam is weighted very much and can either save or ruin your grade. Otherwise, I highly recommend this class. Study his lecture slides and READ THE TEXTBOOK.
He is such an amazing lecturer, the hour would go by so so fast. I will say it is a test heavy course but there is extra credit and the tests are fair. The readings are dense but there isn't too many of them and they are really interesting. Overall great! I loved this class.
I loved Prof Mattson and his class was always so interesting. Tests are all mulitple choice but 3 tests including the final are the only things that determine your grade. Seems scary but it can be a good thing if you just study and read the required readings, you'll be totally fine.
This is the best professor I have ever had. He is extremely knowledgable and reliable in his subject. Attendance is not mandatory and the lecture slides are posted. If you go to class and engage (mostly ask questions), he will know your name without you having to tell him. The tests arent hard at all and I loved him.
Professor Mattson is extremely interested in this field, which makes the classes that much more interesting. However I found that he went off topic many times, slowing down the pace of lectures and changing what criteria would be on tests. Great professor though. My suggestion: study ahead and read the textbook, bc the class is based on 3 tests.
Dr. Mattson is the most insightful, well-spoken and fascinating professor I have ever had. He was extremely inspiring and very thoughtful/empathetic towards students. Anyone who takes his class I consider lucky, as his extensive experience, enthusiasm and ability to engage students converge to make him an Ivy-League caliber professor. (Spring 2023)
Dr. Mattson is one of the best psychology professors at Binghamton. He is very kind and very caring and his lectures were interesting. H eis very insightful and is passionate in the subject. There are three tests in this course but the tests are fair and most of the material is from the lecture slides. I loved this class.
Reading the other reviews I thought this class would be much easier than it was. There are only 3 tests and they are definitely not easy. I studied for days and still got an 80. The TAs post their notes after every lecture but I would take your own still.
Dr. Mattson is definitely my favorite professor ever. He is funny, caring, and very passionate about what he's doing. PSYC 223 is also very interesting. Definitely recommend taking this class with him I love him.
Dr. Mattson ate and left no crumbs! He's passionate about his field, and is always very open to questions. I highly recommend this class for psych/IN majors!
Very kind and passionate about what he does. He integrates humor and personal experiences throughout his lecture. His TAs take notes, and while attendance wasn't required for us, we got extra credit on our exams for showing up. As long as you read the textbook and use the study guides, the class is an easy A. This was my favorite class this sem
Mattson is a great professor who is clearly passionate about the subject. I really enjoyed his lectures but he would sometimes let students' questions take over the lecture, and we would end up behind. Also, grades are only based on three tests, so there is not much to work with. Despite this, Mattson was a great professor and I would recommend him
Dr. Mattson is great! He is incredibly knowledgeable and his lectures easily prove that from day one. However the tests are really confusing. Asking questions in a very confusing manner. Although the extra credit questions at the end do help round off the scores.
the material in the class was some of the most interesting things i've ever studied, but the class is highly test heavy since it was three exams. he's pretty fair with grading and the tests aren't the worst if you read, do the reading guides, and pay attention in class.
He is a really good professor and would highly suggest psyc students to take this class. The course is no very demanding he posts notes and slides of each lecture. He teaching is really interactive and let's you ask questions before the lecture starts and after class you can go and ask your doubts. Highly recommend
I'm not even a psych major, but I absolutely loved this class. His lectures are so interesting that I genuinely pay attention the entire one hour (which I never do for any other class). Studying for tests is a bit of a hassle, but completing the study guide and the reading guides is basically a guaranteed 100.
Amazing professor! Funny and engaging lectures and very knowledgable. I enjoyed going to class so much
One of the best professors I've ever had. Lectures are captivating. He has a thorough knowledge about the subject and GREAT with questions. If you pay attention to his lectures you will do amazing. His TAs take notes during class and their review for exams was so helpful. Exams are straight forward if you know the material.
4 tests the entire year, not cumulative. Mattson is an amazing professor, but as the head of the psych dept. not very involved in the reviews of the material. The tests are mainly made by TAs who go off the textbook and not really what Mattson lectures. Best psych elective tho. I wish he taught more classes.
The class grade only consists of four exams. Some questions on the exam do pertain directly to the textbook so it is useful to read but not needed. The lectures were amazing and Dr. Mattson always showed great interest and knowledge of the material. He was very receptive to questions in class and loved to have discussions. Very interesting class!
laughably easy class. never read the textbooks, studied for each test ~4 hours total (by filling out the study guide he provided). however class sometimes feels like a waste of time when hes having hyperspecific one on one conversations with other students because they never go to office hours. literally spends 40 minutes on questions sometimes
Mattson is a great professor. I am not a psychology major, but I was very interested in the class. His class is only graded by four exams, not cumulative. Although it is test-heavy, he provides study guides, reading guides, and practice questions for each exam, so as long as you do those you will be good. Amazing psyc class and professor!
I love behavioral psychology, and mental health disorders. So maybe I'm bias, but his lectures were so well put together and so fascinating. He is a great speaker. You don't have to take in class notes because the TA's post them. I disliked the fact that the course is exam based. Only 4 exams. Thats it. 25% each = your final grade.
He was awesome. The only thing that was difficult was that there were only 4 tests and that was your entire grade. Other than that he was amazing
The only grading in the class is 4 tests nothing else so very difficult to get an A. Lectures are pretty boring but the material is not extremely difficult and there is no homework.
The course content was really interesting. Dr. Mattson is a great guy, but there was no perfect way to study for his tests. Only 4 tests, 25% each=final grade. Questions were worded weirdly and he included some questions that weren't in the textbook or lectures. It is definitely not an easy A, and even putting in the effort didn't pay off at times.
Great guy, great professor. If u have interest in the subject you'll enjoy the class as he's very knowledgeable. Gets side tracked answering questions sometimes. Study materials n resources are provided plus a couple xtra credit points if u attend class! Not the easiest A being that u are graded on only tests, but if u put in the work it'll pay off
Really interesting class and he is definitely willing to answer questions, but sometimes he goes too in depth and it can slow down lectures. There are two textbooks and you need info from both for the tests, but they aren't that bad with the reading guides. Grade is determined solely by four tests (not cumulative). Very nice and approachable
such an amazing professor who wants his students to do well and learn about what they're actually interested in; always makes lectures so engaging and interesting and very open to questions; there are 4 exams that make up your entire grade, but the final is not cumulative which is nice; tests include things from lecture, textbook, and case studies
Hands down, my favorite course and professor at Binghamton. Heavily invested teacher, heavily intersting class, and on top of that, it's very simple! Though pay attention to case studies, since exams tend to have obscure details about them.
You don't need to go to lectures because he spends the entire time having 1-on-1 with students. He also posts everything online which is helpful. However, the tests are abnormal and contain the randomest statistics and negatively-worded questions and you need to read A MILLION THINGS. Textbooks and case studies and notes and all that. Dont do it.
