Awesome teacher. Highly recommend. Makes English interesting.
The professor is awesome, mainly a chill out class, no exams, easy A depending on your topic for the report which u spend doing all semester
One of the best professors I've had in the past 3 years. The most difficult part of the class is setting aside time to work on the semester report. Be prepared to research and write a small book. Professor is helpful and clear. The class is fun you'll enjoy his sense of humor and insight.
This professor is absolutely hilarious and makes coming to class and learning fun. He had my class laughing so hard on several occasions we were in tears! Quizzes are straight out of the book so do your reading, he is always willing to help if you have questions and is fair with the mandatory project. Definitely recommend him. One of my favorites
This professor was awesome - followed the syllabus exactly, very clear with instructions, and made class fun to attend. There is a major project due near the end of the semester but the majority of assignments due throughout the semester lead up to the major project so stay on top of things. Overall, a good class.
Awesome Teacher! Every class made me laugh hard. There is work but very easy if you do it and follow instructions. The 10 page report is long but he has rough draft days that keep you on track and is simple if you work on it through out the semester! I'm bad in English but did great in this class!
This professor is hilarious and has a really laid back class. There is one big project but besides that it is simple. I hate english courses and really enjoyed this professor. Aside from him being a good guy, he is sometimes strict about his grading but if you do the work there is no way you will fail.
I will be the first to tell you that this class is NOT an easy A. However I would strongly recommend this professor. Kept the class entertaining and had us rolling in tears on multiple occasions. Most all assignments lead up to the 10 page single spaced report. If you stay on top of the assignments and do you work there's no way you can fail.
Great professor, very funny, and always keeps the class attentive and in control. However, he has many "mini" assignments leading up to the final 10-page paper that can destroy you if you are not careful. He is always readily available to help, but you must actively seek it out if you want it.
He's the most sarcastic & hilarious prof I've ever had. You basically go to class to get a good laugh. He assigns a long paper to be due at the end of the semester, but has you do little parts at a time to make it easier. Short pop quizzes over chapters in the book but it's nothing to study for. He's also there for you if you ever need help.
Show up to class, turn your work in on time, and show that you respect him and care about your grade and you won't have to think twice about passing or doing pretty decent.
For a Technical Writing class this prof is shockingly unclear on deadlines and requirements for assignments. Would go to his office hours where he would give my assignment the go ahead only to get back an 'F' . DO NOT TAKE
This professor is awesome. Great sense of humor, totally relaxed, really wants to appeal to students and does a great job of doing so. 10 out 10 would take again. Wish I could have him for every class. Class is easy, pretty much just 1 project. Change your work schedule, class schedule and break up with your girlfriend so you can have him.
This man should not be teaching Freshman English. Honestly there was no teaching at all. Online classes would help more than wasting your time sitting in class here.
Prof Mcguire was a great professor. He is super funny, however, he sometimes spend about half the class joking and talking about thinks not even class related, which is fun. He still manages to get the assignments across. He's hilarious and doesn't assign a lot of work and when he does its pretty easy if you just do it you'll make an A
He is very sarcastic, and unclear. He doesn't answer questions at all. He is very funny but you will find that sitting in class is extremely unproductive. We do nothing and he gets off topic very easy. Cant complain too much because there isn't much work to be done.
He is probably your best bet out of all the english professors. Hardly ever did actual work in class and there was never any quizzes or test taken in class. Only 3 essays and one research paper. Expect to just sit in class and talk about random stuff like tacos.
Class is basically revolved around one project that you work on throughout the semester. Class isn't hard but make sure you're keeping up with the syllabus as there are small assignments due each week. Overall he's funny and keeps the class entertaining.
Best teacher I've had so far! He is hilarious. You come to class and he jokes around for a majority of the time. He is an easy grader and a very understanding professor.
great prof. easy A. Is late majority of the time and lets you go early.
If your sarcasm detector works, he's super funny. You're good as long as you keep up with your assignments and read whatever the syllabus tells you to read. The only real issue is that he doesn't reply to emails, but if you ask him questions in person, he'll definitely help you.
I think he is a great teacher, he starts off the class with a random story which annoyed other people in the class but I really enjoyed his sense of humor. I would definitely take him again because he always helped me when I needed help and always gave great feedback on my papers.
Formal report is the hardest part about this class, he teaches you information that will be useful throughout life and your career. Super easy final, and over all hillarious. He's got a dry sense of humor, but knows how to joke around. Seriously the best professor I have taken at blinn.
This Professor is amazing there wasn't a day in class that we didn't laugh and cut up. Super professional but will take the shot to mess with you if you give it to him. He wants you to succeed and get a good grade but you will have to read the text book in order to follow along in class. Class usually is about discussing the reading assignments.
He is the best prof i've ever had! Super nice and is always making a joke. Makes classes super fun and enjoyable to go to! No excessive amounts of work given. Genuinely wants his students to pass and succeed!!!
Nice guy, teaches well for his topic. Get ready to write though. In his class, it's impossible to be perfect unless you have him check your work multiple times before you submit it. VERY TOUGH GRADER. He's approachable and is willing to help but you must actively work on each assignment. Would take again. Very hard to get an A.
Prof. Mcguire is really funny and sarcastic but when it comes down to the grades, he's really tough. His grading system is off points instead of percentage, basically if you miss one point on a daily assignment its the same thing as missing one point off of your major formal report which both leads to one point off of you overall final grade.
Professor is good but if you have questions, make sure to read his packet first. The packet will be something you rely on for the ENTIRE semester. The report is pretty easy and he shows you how to format it to his liking. Going to class is very important! He will care and help if you show that you care.
Best prof. i've had yet! he's super cool and very helpful. the best thing that helped in his class is that he would relate to what is going on in this generation like talking to us at our level and not so ancient.
class itself isnt too bad, a few small writing assignments and a research report throughout with checkpoints to keep you on track. hes a funny guy and covers the material pretty well. the book pretty much gives step by step instructions and was fairly cheap. follow his formatting and come up with a good research topic and youll be fine
Having a 3.6 GPA before I took this class, with already having an associates in accounting, would not recommend. Wouldnt be so bad if papers were given correct amount of credit, not out of 4 points (A, C or F) questions? Well refer to the syllabus, which he doesnt post on ecampus. Dates due in syllabus may be day later than due on turnitin.
He is the hardest grader I've ever seen. I've written everything that was in the instructions for every assignment and even double checked with him to make sure I was doing every thing right. I haven't got a grade higher than a 75 all semester. He gives quizzes over 2-3 chapters at a time but they are only one question. NO extra credit. Don't take.
Mcguire was a tough grader on a lot of assignments. Grading system is very unfair. For example, a 50 question test is 1 point. Weird. You need the book because all the pop quizzes come from the book. Attendance is mandatory. He was one of the funniest professors Ive had and will help you if you need it. Not an easy A, but it is doable.
You could not never find a prof. like Mr. Mc Guire , he was very helpful and respectful. If you follow up with him during the semester, you will make an easy A
He is truly one of a kind. Hes very approachable and caring. I took him as a freshman and now as a senior, looking back I wanted to give credit to those amazing professors that helped me get to where I am now. Thanks McGuire!!
I took thisin the summer. Good students will get on top of it right away and pay close attention, particulrly to the packet. HE was clear and very fair, but it wasn't easy. I did good on the big stuff, but not on the smaller assigns, lost alot of points. Our syllabus was online, per Texas law, just not on eCampus--and he does answer email!
TAKE PROFESSOR MCGUIRE! The guy is an absolute sweetheart. He gives way too much slack to people that dont deserve it. His papers are a little tough but hes a medium grader. Youre gonna have to read the book. Hes funny and he likes to hear what you have to say. Take this guy!
Really nice professor, will do his best to help you. You have to read or you wont get better than a B/C because he quizzes frequently after chapters and does group discussions. Hes funny and tries to get to know his students. The papers you write are easy and fun, all around great class. Theres no extra credit so do your best on quizzes.
I definitely recommend him. He is clear on his grading, fair, very accessible outside of class, and wants the best for his students. He teaches required programming in Word, has pop quizzes over required reading, and the majority of your grade comes from the report. If you follow his instructions, do the reading, and attend class, you'll be fine.
Richard McGuire is the best prof. I have ever had. He is understanding of your schedule, he is genuinely funny, he loves to go on tangents that last entire classes, and he is wildly intelligent. He will make you smarter though it may come at the price of work. Easy A if you show you care, fantastic teacher all around.
Just took his class--pretty solid. I learned a lot! I could tell some people didn't pay atention in class or read his packet, which is vital. Youlose points for not doing certain things in certain documents, and he made that clear. He can be blunt, even sarcastic if you waste his time, but he's pretty funny and wants you to do well
Professor McGuire is by far one of the best professors Ive had so far. His class was super easy, and he was just great! He is very sarcastic, but super funny. Dont be too sensitive around him, hes a big jokester!
Takeing him now, moved online b/c Coronavirus. i miss his classroom self, but hes been super helpful and fastby many email replies. I sent my Formalreport to him a few times so he could help and i heard the same from othres. I could not fix some MSWord problems w/o his help he gave me. His 1st time online I think, but he did good overall
This class was the hardest class I took that semester. I took Engineering Cal 2 and was more worried about my grade in Tech Writing. Professor Mcgruire does not provide enough information on the projects. He does not grade by a ruberic which makes some of his grades seem unfair. But he will work with you if you show you care about the class.
Professor McGuire was a very a great teacher, he makes all the material very easy to understand. He can be laid back at times but don't let that fool you, you still need to try your hardest. He gives good feedback on all writing assignments so you can improve next time. Overall, he's a great professor and I would recommend you take his class.
Professor Mcguire is a caring and funny professor. He would make an amazing friend. But when it comes to his class I felt confused the entire semester. I would double-check the requirements of each assignment before I turned it in and could still never get a 100. The grading system is awful. I usually love English, but I was just so lost.
I took this class online and didn't expect much, but I was wrong. Prof McGuire is a serious dude, but a reasonable one. Grades heavily off of rubrics so make sure to read them VERY carefully. Do NOT be afraid to talk to him. He will work with you and is always available. He will mess with you so don't be too sensitive when talking to him.
If you are reading this go ahead and sign up for the class. I have taken many classes. However, this has by far been one of my favorite. Professor will do everything in his power to help you/make you more comfortable in the course. He is the funniest guy you will ever meet and you can see that he truly cares about your success. TAKE HIM!!!
I would never take him again. He isn't clear on his instruction and isn't there to help you. He will tell you something is OK on email and then deduct point for doing what he told you to do. If I didn't keep with my grades and keep record of what he told me to do via writing (in emails) them I don't think I would've passed. Don't take him seriously
Really great professor. Gives feedback and does his best to help. Grading criteria is clear in e-campus and in the course packet. Very accessible outside of class and cares about his students. Most of the grade comes from the formal report. All assignments are listed in detail in the course packet. (Pay attention to the course packet)
He's a funny teacher who makes class a bit more interesting. I enjoyed his class overall and the subject is not one that I enjoy. I would absolutely take his class again and I wish that his field of teacher was more involved with my major.
Professor Mcguire is great. He's funny and likes to chat in class. He adjusted assignment deadlines according to what we needed. He doesn't address how he wants the assignments done until the last minute, however. (keep up with deadlines and ask about the assignments in advance). His class had a relatively light workload.
Really good professor. Would take again.
Don't be afraid by the 10-page report you see people talking about in other reviews. You work on it throughout the entire semester and it's essentially the entire class. There are other assignments but they aren't too bad and not that many. He is actually really nice and funny and spends a lot of class time just talking to the class.
I very much enjoyed tech writing b/c of this prof! He's so engaging & accommodating, also sarcastic at times (don't be afraid of him, be sarcastic right back). However, he grades pretty stiffly. USE the course packet/grading rubric AS MUCH as possible to ensure your grade, otherwise you could lose 25 points for things like margins/gutters.
Heading into this class, I was very intimidated by everything on the syllabus, especially the ten-page formal report. However, as long as you put in the effort, there is no reason to make anything other than an A in this class. Professor McGuire is very understanding and willing to help. I highly recommend taking his class if you can!
Prof McGuire's class seems intimidating at first but try not to get overwhelmed you have the entire semester to work on the major assignment a 10-page formal report. The formal report is long and sucks to write but just push through you can you use graphs for most of it and he really doesn't grade it that hard.
If you have to take this class over the summer, don't. He grades the work hard and relates everything to his course packet that isn't much help. Quizzes are easy but discussion posts and papers aren't clear
The best English professor I have ever taken. He has a 10 page formal report that is due at the end of the semester for a third of the grade, but do not get freaked out about it, he grades it pretty lightly. As long as you read the Course packet that defines all the criteria to succeed on the papers you have to write, you will pass easily.
Is a good professor which doesn't require a lot of work to pass the class. The most important thing is to attends event though is not mandatory because you can many benefit from it. For example, one day only 5 of us when to class and we did a 5 question quiz that basically the question were about yourself.
Prof McGuire is pretty great as long as you show up to class and turn in everything. He is definitely willing to work with you. Also, your grade will basically rely on a 10 page report that you work on all semester.
Tech writing sucks but ol Rich makes it manageable.
I adore Professor McGuire! He is such a great guy! He can be tough but he is always willing to listen and hear your concerns. He is very strict with the syllabus and follows it unless you are told otherwise. You WILL have quizzes over readings but they are very easy!! If you just read and come to class ON TIME you will be fine.
Professor McGuire turned a class that I was dreading, Technical Writing, into something that I actually enjoyed. His lectures were not always on topic, but during the course of his many anecdotes and stories, the overall knowledge about technical writing was explained fully.
Great Teacher, at first you may think the work is difficult but it truly does help you stay on track with the class. Mr. McGuire is also hilarious and can make lectures entertaining.
Professor McGuire is as helpful as he can be for this class. He responds very fast to email and is super understanding. He grades the assignments based on following instructions. As long as you follow the instructions in the course packet and rubric his class is not hard!
his ecampus set up is a little confusing, but look at the dropbox for due dates and keep track of your quizzes. look at the rubric for your writing assignment before starting!! it will make your life so much easier. the writing portion of the final is very important but the process of writing the report will effect your grade the most
Terribly strict grader, I would try really hard on my assignments paying attention to the instructions, but would receive poor grades and was very condescending when trying to email with him. Should be an easy class, but he makes it harder than it should be. Would recommend finding another prof for this course.
Love love love him!!!! Definitely would have got a better grade if I knew how to write better and he is a tough grader on the essays. Either way, TAKE HIM.
Great professor. He makes it very clear what is expected of you. Your main priority in this class will probably be the 10 page formal report. Sounds like a lot, but there are deadlines for rough drafts that help you stay on track. He will help you with whatever you need and provide you with good feedback. I enjoyed this class.
Truly a teacher who cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. If you have an issue outside of school he will do everything he can to work with you. Contrary to what others have said, he really wasn't a tough grader, just follow the prompt and you'll be just fine. Would recommend him 10/10.
Professor McGuire is the most amazing english professor I've had! You do need to show up perfect attendence in his class is highly beneficial especially helps towards the end of your semester. Pretty easy assignment wise couple of quizzes, chapter reviews from the textbook (easiest 100 ever), and of course essays!
Half of the class time we did nothing, it was just a waste of time. He's a super tough grader and so confusing. He has a smart mouth, if you're shy like me don't take him, he puts everyone out there every single class, WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE.
This class and professor was a waste of my time and money. Dont take it, he makes you dig through a large packet to figure things out for the whole course which obviously wont work for everyone. He's a strict grader as well, offers little to no help, and makes this class seem way harder than it should be.
He is the best prof I have had at Blinn. Although you have a 10-page paper due at the end of the semester, he breaks it down throughout the semester, so it's manageable. There is a course packet(you don't have to purchase it) that gives you everything for every assignment and outlines a formal report.
His lectures were always engaging as well as perfect attendance results in an exemption from the final exam. He is a relatively tough grader so just try and follow the rubrics. The course packet can show you how to do every assignment as well as his lectures being structured to teach the assignments. Would recommend.
Amazing professor but difficult class.
Be prepared to work. He has a very well laid out grading criteria, and walks you through every step of your project. You have one major project, and a few smaller projects. He answers emails in timely manners and I never had an issue scheduling to meet with him for alternative office hours. I would absolutely take another one of his classes.
There's a big project, but it's set up in chunks throughout the course and is graded one piece at a time. This helps a lot with the overall grade of the project which is a good portion of overall grade. Make sure to pay attention to the due dates, and use the rubric, instructional videos, and the course materials on each assignment!!!!!
Do not be blinded by the professor's glowing reviews as they are certainly faked. He is an extremely harsh grader that will happily cut points for every minor mistake without any feedback whatsoever. All of the assignments have hyper specific requirements that are not elaborated on at all. Prepare for a C if you take this guy.
Terribly strict grader. Even if you try really hard on my assignments paying attention to the instructions you will probably receive poor grades. Very condescending. Should be an easy class, but he makes it harder than it should be. Would recommend finding another professor for this course.
Please do not take him for your own sanity. Most assignments are graded on a 1/4 scale with limited nondescript criteria for receiving a 1,2,3 or 4. You get a 2/4 you get a 50% on the assignment. You get a 3/4 you get a 75%. Not much wiggle room to do well. I think he wants to make students struggle and fail.
Do not take him. I've made A's in college eng. courses. He grades based off 2 or 4 point rubric, if you miss ONE little thing it jumps to either 75 or 50. He says he wants you to pass, that is WRONG he will take points of VERY fast. Final is optional if perfect attendance,BARELY lectures and can't take notes on electronics or drink water in class.
I have taken Mr.McGuire for English 1301 and technical writing. To say this man is one of the best professors out there isn't good enough. Some say he's a tough grader but I couldn't disagree more, his rubrics are to the point and if you are confused he will always take the time to meet with you. If you put in the work you will get the grade!
He grades harshly—assignments are out of 4 points, and minor mistakes drop your grade fast. Instructions were often unclear. Feedback was usually given after the next draft was due, so you couldn't fix anything in time. He makes an easy class unnecessarily difficult. Wouldn't recommend.
Absolutely ridiculous grading rubric, most papers are graded on a 4 point scale, the tiniest of mistakes quickly drops your paper down to a 75 or worse. He clearly does not want to see his students pass. Makes no effort to give helpful feedback on assignments. Every bit of information is listed in his course packet, but instructions are vague.
Professor McGuire actually made me want to come to his class. Lectures are mandatory if you don't want to take the final. His classes are enjoyable, and assignments are very doable. He teaches things that are actually helpful in real life. There is no way to fail his class if you do the work. Please take his class! You won't regret it!
He is a tough grader with all assignments being out of 4 points and each point is all or nothing so grade does drop quick. However, Professor McGuire is an amazing professor and you can tell that he loves his job. He's great with students and will answer every question you have. If you put some effort into this class you will be perfectly fine.
