I think he means well, but he doesn't teach you how to do the math
The correlation between his classes and what is on the final is minimal at best.
He's the worst math teacher I've ever had!!!!
over complicates things
Overcomplicates things. Talks at the students rather than teaching
Fun class. Good prof. Explains materials clearly.
Please come to class on time and prepare your notes ahead of time
Best teacher ever! Very easy to understand :)
3 students screwed up a midterm question the same way, one got 20/25, 5/25, 0/25
Brutal! He knows the stuff I guess, but just can't teach!
Not an exciting prof, but this is calculus. Would take a class from him again.
Easy prof (only during summer semester), give you all the question before exams.
when u ask him a question, he goes on and on about something else

definitely not the prof to take this class from!
This was by far the worst professor I have ever had in university. Stay away!
He seems a little out of it when you ask him a question.
Don't take classes from him unless you want to self-learn the material
Very helpful, one of the better math profs I have ever had.
Brutal!
overall bad experience, hard exams
I love the comb over, horrible prof
Vioce screeches like he has not gone through puberty, easy tests if u self-study
the guy's a nut job, he talks to himself in the halls
If you already took highschool Calc. its all good, if not, get another prof.
He helps you when you come for it. Voice makes it hard to concentrate though...
Very odd, rambles on, and his tests are tricky for those new to calculus. Brutal

ok prof, goes off on tangents that are totally unrelated to the topics, tests are pretty easy, final is hard
He is too hard to understand because he rambles on from one thing to the next without stopping to explain it so it makes it extremely hard to understand.
enough with the proofs, do some frikin examples with actual numbers
Good professor, explains things well, and also does examples
He is so freaking confusing. He rambles inanely and without reason. He writes and draws on top of whatever he wrote before.
Babbles nonsense some days and is really helpful other days. Can be difficult to understand BUT before any test/quiz he tells you almost exactly what questions will be on it and how to do em making the class very easy.
Worst ever math Prof I have ever had... doesn't show how to apply things only shows proof that it "should" work... very frusterating!
Hard to understand. And you will laugh at his voice. Bad teaching style. No good if this is your 1st calculus class.
Assignments are reasonably challenging, tests and midterms are simple if you pay attention to what he tells one class beforehand. He does choose the ABSOLUTE MOST EXPENSIVE TEXTBOOKS AVAILABLE, and you will require them for assignments. Ugh.
Hes reasonably good. Gives quizes and homework on alternating weeks that are easy. look at his previous midterms to do well on midterms (they are all the same format) Before any test he tells you almost exactly what questions. does lots of proofs tho, and is forgetful which sometimes is good for you
sounds like grover when he talks. Confuses the heck out of you. doesn't explain things from the beginning, expects that you all took calculus in highschool. RUN! Run as fast as you can out of this class!
I cannot warn you enough...I am good at math, I can get it, if someone EXPLAINS it! For the sake of your GPA, don't go here! He is SO unclear, and no one knows what the heck is going on...it's bad...I learn more from the text, and the text sucks too. He seems like a nice guy, but that isn't enough to risk your GPA. Stay away!!!
Worst teacher ever. Actually repeats himself and even then you cant understand. He will actually advise you to drop the class if you fail one of his midterms. Not encouraging at all. Makes you feel like a dumbass. Sounds like a kid that just hit puberty. I strongly suggest to not take his class.
Easiest class I ever took in my life (then again, I aced Calculus in high school). Kinda funny voice. Try getting him to say "population".
Overall a good teacher. Had fair assignments and quizzes on alternating weeks, also gave good help for assignments before you hand them in. Spends lots of time explaining useless things but knows how to teach important concepts well! I'd recommend him!
he got way off topic and was horrible at helping youunderstand concepts.
Most fun in class is quoting his stupid comments, commenting on his hair, also his sweet outfits. Other than that class is pretty dry. You've got to love keeping track of how many times his voice cracks and he almost falls over chairs.
Knows his stuff, but gets way off topic. Not clear at all. Text book saved me! Willing to help out but you'll be there for hours listening to him go on- off topic.
seemed like he was trying to prove to himself that things worked...didnt really give good examples. hard to learn from his teaching ways.
Makes an otherwise difficult class interesting if you pay close attention. His quizzes and assignments are very easy, and his examples are done well, albiet he tends to use a lot of geometry. The second midterm is TOUGH, but the final is much much easier. I'd recommend this prof to anyone interested in calculus.
Funny to listen to but that's it. He shows theory behind formulas and ideas instead of the operation of them. Extremely difficult to keep up with and frustrating even to someone who's good at math. However he was good about extending assignments for the entire class for random reasons, but still not worth it.
His interest is only trying to prove everything. This is a class of proving. Prove, prove, prove.
All about PROOFS. Spends the entire class proving a formula.Class doesn't have an idea what he is doing. If you have not taken calculus 30 and math 30 do not take this class from him. His examples are bad as he does not use actual numbers. Quizzes and Homeowork is easy.Midterm was fair. Tends to talk to him self not class.Gets off topic easy.BEWARE
Well I must say this class was interesting. I wouldn't recomend this teacher for anyone who does not have Calc 30 or Math C30 just because he doews alot of proofs. They are very hard to understnad. Seems to try to convince himself of the proofs as he rambels on at the front, i'm sure it can't be heard. However Easy Marker.
I did not take calcus in high school and because of Richard I got over a 90 in this class. Easiest prof at the u of r. He literally spoon feeds you the material. If I didn't have him I probably would have failed. And to top it all off he's not too bad on the eyes either. If you have to take math, take it from Richard! Best Prof EVER!!
This Prof is a joke. He stands at the front of the room and writes down examples that are irrelevent to the textbook and what we are actually doing in class. He also mumbles to himself as he write. He rairly ever addresses the class to help them learn. He doesnt explain things either. He is the WORST math prof and I suggest not taking his class.
He was one of the worst profs that I've ever had. He often wouldn't even prepare for class, he'd just go through the text book.
I had him for 110, and had i known he would be the prof for 111 i would never have taken it, he doesn't give any examples and doesn't explain things well at all. You won't have any idea whats going on at all. Take math from labropulu if you can.
He doesn't do any examples in class, just proves theories. The HW is a very easy mark and so are the quizes, however, they don't prepare the students for the midterms and final which are a lot harder.
He was awesome, spoon feeds material. Don't be intimdated by him -- he explains the most complicated way to approach a problem and then the easy way which makes the easy way seems even easier. Tells you exactly what to expect for exams. Awesome Prof.
Terrible. I understood high school class and he just confused me. He teaches pure theory and pulls numbers out of nowhere without explanation. Whoever said he's easy on the eyes is confused, McIntosh is a balding old guy. He's clearly intelligent but an awful teacher. Avoid him if you can.
Cant understand the guy, talks to the board. Comes into class and just starts writing stuff on the board, no links between theories.
This prof is terrible. There are some people that know exacly what he is talking about but not many. Talks to himself, faces the board and just looks in textbook and gives you notes that way. If you go to him for a simple question you won't leave for half an hour. He doesn't let you know if there is labs until last second. Terrible terrible!!!
he wasn't the best teacher but there are worse ones than him
I dont know why people hate him that much!! He is a very nice guy! He tells you what to expect in the quiz and exams. I went to his office many times and he was helpful...he even told me the answers to questions from the assignments... Plus he is very smart! He masters the subject! I definitely recommend him for those who like math!!! He ROCKS!!
Decent professor, you will actually need to read the text book and learn from it and he goes over numerous examples in class but he does alot of proofs, which is necessary to understand where the formulas come from but not necessary for the exams. You have at least a week to do assignments. Tests arnt bad if you studied. Decent prof.
how could you say this prof was good in any way? HE ISN'T.
He is a great prof. Any of those previous comments are from people who do not pay attention in class, they look at the board and say i don't understand it and give up. It is helpful to read ahead in the text book if you have a hard time in math, otherwise you dont need to. He teaches the theory and does a ton of examples. Easy to get a high mark.
McIntosh is an incredible prof. He knows calculus inside out and explains things slowly and clearly. He tells you exactly what will be on the test and provides lots of examples. The people who said he's difficult are probably nubile 18-year-olds who can't understand people who speak in mathematical terms.
Great Prof! Is always willing to help, and is super smart.. he is difficult to understand sometimes and you need to ask questions when you dont understand! but overall very good
Haven`t even started the class yet but he has only replied to one of six or seven e-mails over the summer! Everyone I talked to about him last term hates him and I guess this is why. Hopefully his teaching is a lot better than his communication but it isn`t from what I`ve heard. Wish I could take `nother prof. but can`t TAKE ANYONE ELSE if possible
Very unclear with his examples, boring to listen to, has weekly assignments which help, final is standardized, textbook is needed for assignments
He seems like a nice guy and someone who really knows his subject but he is boring to listen to and doesn't really "teach" all that well. The textbook and Internet saved me in this course. His assignments and midterms are easy and he is a fair marker. The final was more difficult than the midterm but still fair.
I guess Dr McIntosh is a typical example of that "a good scholar is not always a good teacher". No doubt he knew very well about the subject. However, sometimes he got out of the track. Jumping around here and there. When I asked a question, unnecessary explanation just kept going on and on for 20~30 minutes even after the answer was given.
Avoid him at all costs. We didn't even finish what was set out for the class in the syllabus. There is no excuse for that.
He is the worst professor that I have ever come across in my life. He is about to retire but he doesn't even know why people hate him or even why there are so many people that are not able to do well in his courses. Our class average at the end of the term was 51 % !!! every second person in the class failed. enough said. make ur decision now.
Great prof. He knows calculus inside out! One of the best profs I ever had. Very helpful indeed. Highly recommend!
Knows a lot about calculus but a horrible instructor. Goes off topic very often, rambles on about stuff irrelevant to the course and makes his lectures overly complex. Avoid him at any cost.
Really knows his stuff but lives in his own little bubble of numbers. Socially awkward. His lectures make no sense. I had to teach myself this course using internet and YouTube. If you can make a friend in the class to study with, do so. He posts previous exams online, so study those and you're good to go. Does not throw curveballs.
Best calculus prof! McIntosh would always update U of R courses with sample quizes that are similar to the ones you are going to take. Posted several different midterms and finals WITH solutions, making the studying super easy Lectures can be long and a bit dry
He is the worst professor I have ever had. Lectures were unclear and not helpful whatsoever. Quiz/test questions were nothing like the assignments. Most of the time more of class failed the quizzes than not. Marks really tough and gives no grace. Gave no indication of what was on the final. Do not take this prof.
Not very clear when explaining, gets on lots of off topic tangents and doesnt explain the material/methods well at all. Tests are easy if time is taken to read book
He's tough at first, but as soon as you figure out what he expects then it's easy to do well. If you have trouble with the assignments just go to his office and talk to him. He loves talking about math and will pretty much give you the answers. It's actually hard to leave his office because he doesn't want to stop helping you!
AWESOME
This professor narrates problems on the board like a "beautiful mind" and doesn't engage with the class or explain what he expects the class to know and understand, making it difficult to do well on quizzes. He seems nice, however, he confuses simple concepts that I taught myself later, easily.
Which should be simple concepts are made confusing because he does not explain concepts rather just gives theory and proves the theorys.
Sits at the front of the class and talks to the board. That in theory would be great if anything from the lecture would be of use but it's all theory and no examples to help prepare for quizzes/midterms. Very intelligent person but be warned if you go to his office hours he will go on a tangent for half an hour just like he does in class.
Talks to himself asking all these questions like hes Dora the Explorer, faces the board all class, stops every ten seconds to look at his work and see what he missed. He will tend to write down formulas and let you know what he did after he's already finished and your already asleep. Smart guy, doesn't know the concept of "teach"
He talks to the board more than the class. However, we learnt how to do the Pythagorean theorem in ancient china (not too sure why). no practical examples done in class, everything he teaches is a theory he is proving. spent the whole class once telling us how the power rule was made. cool stuff.
The instructor knows the subject very well. However, he seems to ramble on many times about random things that are not relevant to the class. Most lectures he goes over the time allowed. He goes over the same theory examples, sometimes with different variables. No examples done using values or trig functions. Does post great practice quizzes.
What kind of professor will "teach" (in quotations b/c he is poor at teaching to begin with) the class 2 new concepts (constraints and anti derivatives) on the last 2 days of classes and put them on the final? this guy!
Overall he is a decent prof. However, if you have never taken a Calculus class before I might stay away from him. He doesn't give many examples using numbers. Instead he proves and explains the rules and formulas of Calculus. He gives practice quizzes and midterms that are almost identical to the actual ones so if you know calculus, you'll do well!
Terrible professor. Would only ever teach theory and gave no examples. Would post practice quizzes but never went over how to actually do the problems. Would go off on tangents constantly. Final was nothing like posted previous examples. This prof almost cost me graduating. Avoid at all costs!
His final was awful, and much more different and tougher than his old finals. The first midterm average was in the low 50s and the second midterm average was at a 47%. He teaches only theory in class and no examples were given in class! The final average of the class was in the 50s. Toughest class in my entire semester. If you can avoid him!
His lecture is hard to understand and his midterms are difficult and you will not have enough time to finish it and final ughh dont even wanna say anything about that just take this class with someone else dont take it with him u might fail and drop ur GPA just ignore him and his class..
Windows has always had an upper hand over Apple. There has been a rivalry ever since 2000's. But, as we all know Windows is far superior than Apple Inc., Richard McIntosh is as bad as the Macintosh operating system. Richard McIntosh doesn't startup the class well, He has storage problems which he dumps in the exam paper and lastly run, run, run.
Terrible class. Awfully boring and extremely difficult. Everything about the course is difficult; the homework, the midterms, the final. Avoid professor. The averages for the exams were so low, you were happy just passing. He teaches as if he thinks everyone is a mathematician.
This class was absolutely terrible. If you are a prepared to teach yourself the entire course by textbook and YouTube, sign up with him. If not, avoid him! He does no practical examples and never truly shows you how to fix assignment questions or exams. Class average was failing for first midterm and overall after final was 54. Stay Away!
Richard is great as a professor. His class helps a lot.
I agree with the fact that you will be learning this course from YouTube all by yourself, as he only does a couple examples, and 90% of his notes are theory. There are a couple good professors on YouTube that teach Calc 3 and you can totally get a decent mark if you put in the extra (a, lot actually) work. This prof might not be for everyone though
Awful at staying on subject, teaches all over the place and doesn't explain what he is talking about. Hard to pay attention to, doesn't explain what ANY words mean so you have to do it yourself. He seems like a nice person but is not meant to be a teacher!
Worst prof I have ever had. Always goes off on tangents and can't explain anything. You teach yourself the entire course. Avoid
Hard to understand what he was teaching in class. Posts old tests online learnt more from them then I did him but they helped with the quizzes we took.
He is the worst university prof I ever had. He basically just talks to himself for an hour and doesn't answer questions. This is such an easy class, and it shouldn't be hard to explain it.
This guy is a genius, he loves math. BUT HE CANNOT teach. The material in the class is not that bad, he just makes it seem way more complicated than it is. As well he left out some other key concepts that the other class was taught that would have been helpful on the final. Avoid taking this class with him if you can.
I finished the class with a very high mark but the grade was not worth it at all with this prof. He is unorganized, unable to communicate the info and does not teach. His quizzes and midterm are not difficult though. Prepare to teach yourself all of the material. He also taught us half of the whole content in 2 weeks. Never take this professor.
to be honest, i was scared to take his class at first but now i dont regret it. He literally posts every thing on UR courses and is approachable outside class. You WILL be lost in his class but you can easily catch up because everything he gives you to work on is posted. take his class. dont buy the textbook borrow from the library for 2 hours
Unless you're prepared to put in an insane amount of work, do NOT take his class! Richard is clearly very knowledgeable and excited about teaching his subject; however, he is very unclear and focuses on the theoretical, which is honestly very confusing, as he does not test on them. He tries to answer questions but gets carried away
HE IS A TERRIBLE PROF!!! Had him for my Differential equations class and currently have him for my Stats for Engineers class, his lectures consist of incoherent rumbling about math that may or may not be related to what we are supposed to be learning, and the phrase "oh well, we can just guess the answer". Avoid him if you can.
Richard seems like a smart guy, but his lectures are quite useless. You are better off learning everything by yourself and during the lab. He is all over the place, often just doing whatever is on the top of his head. Quizzes / midterms are not too hard if you practice the questions. Dont take this prof if you can
Richard seems like a smart prof, but I did not learn anything from him. I need practice questions to learn, not just someone who talks and gets off track. No mark free questions were given to practice. I am learning online through zoom and he does not answer the chat questions. If you like learning by yourself and on your own terms, he is for you.
TERRIBLE PROF! He is great for posting formulas and resources from previous exams. however that is the only thing he is good at, he mutters his lectures and has a voice crack every second sentence. I could look past this if he actually broke down what he was doing but he never does, & He doesn't respond to the chat on zoom. AVOID HIM IF POSSIBLE.
This class is easy but Richard is not good at teaching it. The formula sheets and past assignments he posts literally tells you how to do everything so its not hard. If you email him and ask for help he will usually give you super good explanations and show you how to answer.
He makes math so incredibly difficult. He does not teach anything at all. He "explains" math by talking you through steps, does not write anything down. His notes are full of theory and his assignments are math based- no theory involved. He is the worst. If you can avoid taking any math with him, you should. He refuses to use his camera to teach.
Good luck. Hes dog
His lectures can be quite boring; however, he gives very specific hints about how to do the assignments during them so I would suggest paying attention when he talks about them. The assignments and midterms are short. His midterms are also extremely fair and were very similar to the assignments. The lowest assignment and exam grades get dropped.
He only reads the textbook and notes. Does not do examples in class. Do not recommend.
If you wanna pass easy and get a good grade, I suggest you take it. BUT, you will have to teach yourself, the tests, assignments are very well structured and easiest to understand. He will also give you hints on how you can complete the assignments, give you lecture vid and relevant prev sem questions & answers. So its easy to get a good grade.
I really appreciated his lectures! I loved his enthusiasm for math and found him very amusing and enlightening. He was also pretty understanding when it came to assignments, as I needed another crack at a couple questions and was given that. Judging by these reviews he is not for everyone, but I consider him a cult classic.
Can be Annoying sometimes. Does not stick to the topic he is teaching. Blabbers a lot about unrelated stuff. Makes easily understandable stuff more complicated and confusing. He posts his handwritten notes which makes no sense. Be ready to teach yourself. He is a fair grader.
Dr. McIntosh is one of the worst professors I've ever had. He didn't give partial marks on assignments, went on many tangents, never let students ask questions, was rude to students who tried to suggest better teaching methods as he just read through his notes (no live examples) and gave us YouTube videos to watch instead of actually teaching us.
Be prepared for lots of YouTube & teaching yourself the material. Worst professor I ever had most ppl didn't bother atte. Online class he sits back and talks at you, reads his handwritten notes. Does not do live examples. Rambles a lot. Doesn't ask questions. Is always drinking from a paper cup, is red faced I really suspect t he might be drinking.
My disappointment is immeasurable and my semester is ruined.
Honestly he is a horrible professor, doesn't know how to teach. The most he does is somewhat explain a question, other than that he just reads from a textbook. Actually rather than read, he just paraphrases it horribly.
Overall this semester with Richard McIntosh was my worst experience with a prof. First time teaching this class online and it was a dud. The guy had very poor time management issues and didn't know how to teach the class online. No examples, Poor notes, and hard to communicate with. Do not take this class or any other class with him.
Honestly one of the worst profs I have ever encountered. His tests are fairly simple as he does upload older exams to study on. But the only way I passed his class is because I took calc in highschool. Will tell which methods to use after the exams so if you use a different method he deducts marks. AVOID AT ALL COSTs
This professor is the worst professor at the University of Regina, actually probably the worst professor in Canada - he is a textbook example of what not to be.
Would not recommend. Incredibly boring, never clearly explained anything, had to look everything up online to complete the homework. If you attend most classes and do the homework, 70% is achievable but not easy. However if you score better on the final he'll drop one of your midterm marks, which is nice. But I will never take his class again.
Richard is unbelievably boring to listen to. He will teach a class (1h15m) where he doesn't turn away form the board once, and he rambles about completely random things. By the third week he was getting about 5/80 students attending class, and although I tried to go to most classes, I still had to learn the entire course online.
He lectures nothing except proof of theories and the same couple examples for every section. It gets very difficult when studying for quizzes and exams as you WILL need the textbook for further explanations and more difficult questions. Overall easier quizzes but difficult exams. If you can avoid do it, but read the textbook if you have him.
He's a decent professor who doesn't deserve all the hate he gets. Don't get me wrong, his lectures are so boring and dry but his tests are very fair. Hate the logic in the lectures, wish he'd do more examples. Love the quizzes instead of assignments. You can get a good mark with minimal effort.
He will spend half the lecture teaching theory straight from the textbook and then say “you don't really need to know this because you wouldn't have time to actually derive this formula in a quiz or exam”. Start watching Organic Chemistry Tutor on YouTube. Marry your caucus textbook as well. My other friend with a 95 average got a 60 in this class
Lectures can be dry, but exams are fair. Take advantage of hints during lectures and use resources like ChatGPT and unstuck study to supplement study prep. Overall, a doable class with minimal effort.
