awesome professor who really knows his history
have to go to discussions, don't need to read the book all you need is lectures
Not the greatest class but he knows his stuff and tests are not bad
Boring class, tests werent too bad, choice between multiple choice and essay
This guy SUCKS. He is BORING, ****, and relatively rude. Knows his history though. Tests suck if you don't read and take really good notes. You can choose btw essay and multiple choice tests. There are better profs.
SUCKS SUCKS and uh yeah.... SUCKS!! Horrible professor, grades terribly, asks opinionated questions and then when you answer it in an essay and validly support it, gives you half the points and tells you that you are wrong..... dont ever take this class
tests are reaaaallly difficult if you don't read and don't memorize your notes...class is boooring...he knows his history though..class is not too difficult
Blaahhhhhh! Worst class ever. hard tests, lectures so fast i felt like i was doing crack.
3 exams and 3 essays. Exams are either multiple choice or essay - your choice. But do essay b/c you have a better chance defending an answer than guessing mulitple choice. Read books for discussion only.
if your idea of fun is dying a slow, painful death, then this is the place for you. if you enjoy a man who will mock you for taking time out of your day to go and ask for help, then this is definitely the place for you. tedious, boring, arrogant, JERK!
Relatively simple, study notes for tests and don't wait around to start your term paper. Lots of reading!!
Boring cannot begin to explain this class. I wanted to die while sitting through his lectures. Tests are harder than imaginable and they are impossible to study for. Thousands of pgs of reading. STAY AWAY!!!
He's not that bad. The class is short, simple, and easy to follow. His lectures are clear, and there's really not that much work at all, other than taking notes. You don't need to read the main text book at all. Tests are all essays and not too hard.
First off, history is boring. For some reason, the way he taught it, I payed attention. Just study your notes & you'll do well. Tests are essays & exactly from lectures. Lots of reading but it's survivable.
It is history, so it's not the most interesting class. But it is relatively easy if you go to class and get the notes. Test are straight from lectures, so you know exactly what to study. His lectures are very clear and easy to follow.
what can I say? huge lecture hall with boring professor. Tests are mainly from notes in class. not book.
This was a great history class. He really knows what he is talking about! Three tests and they are all essays. He maps out the topics of the exams for you. I loved this class!
not a bad course. dont read. easy to get a B witout studying. read for discussion sessions only.
a mix between a computer geek and a failing stand up comedian. boring but informative lectures. only read for discussions. tests are essays and he prepares you well. to the point...funny and helpful but boring
Is very cocky, and when writing a paper you must agree with his perspective on the event in order to get a good grade. Also, he is very boring, I learned how to fall asleep sitting up in his class.
he is the most boring man on the face of this earth. he talks funny...like opening half of his mouth and his voice is so monotone. he can put you to sleep in 5 mins. dont take him in the morning. essay tests and 2 not so hard papers for the semester
He is such a nice man, the class is pretty boring, but not that bad. Class is so easy if you go to class and get the notes, tests are based directly from class and notes. I havent read more than 20 pages in the book and i still have a B+!
you can fall asleep easily in this class.can't remember the last time there was actual interacting between him and a student during the lecture.approachable, fair, shows interesting documentaries, tough tests-but go to class. he takes attendance.
most boring class on the planet....no one in the class ever participates or reads the books....2 tests and a 12-15 pg. book review...yuck...if you don't need this class...don't take it!
Good guy, kinda boring, but I like the subject so I never got bored. Lotsa books to read, but I enjoyed them, 2 tests and 12-15 pg book review. Hes a fairly good guy overall.
I hate this class so much. I fall asleep EVERY DAY. I always look forward to going class so I can take a nap.
Most boring class ever. He's very hard to hear and understand, if it weren't for the TA I would be so lost! Tremendous amounts of reading and studying. He always assigns papers right before midterms. He is not willing to work with you or help you out when you are having trouble.
i hate this class so much. not because its boring (even though it is) but because he is so unclear and unwilling to help you. very cocky. tests on stuff that he either doesn't say in class or that he briefly mentions. memorize your notes for the exam, but you will still probably get a b or c!!!!
The hardest class I have taken at JMU, soooo boring and the TA is a b----, don't take her for the discussion, she is a harder grader than the prof. I thought this class would be easy bc I've taken AP US history, but nooo, im getting a D. Avioid at all costs..
Really hard class especially for a GenEd. Tests are either multiple choice or essay...take the essay. Guy is really boring so you'll either sleep or end up skipping a lot.
prof meixsel is a nice man, but his class is ridiculously boring! he lectures the entire time-talks monotone and so fast- & tests come straight from those notes, but are incredibly detailed...if you can avoid him then i definartely would reccommend it
India History, well knowledgable, we dont really talk about stuff that far back though. One book was kinda boring, but the rest were alright. Farily entertaining in class as well. I would recommend for any higher level history, had him for 301 also.
one of the worst prof i have had so far. his lectures are soo boring! the discussions are okay but you have to read the material. the tests are ridiculously detailed. they are nearly impossible to study for. study groups are a must. i wouldnt recommend him..
Very hard tests. I took both essay and mutiple choice and they were both very detailed and HARD. for discussion you have to know every little detail of the material he assigns. lecture is very boring and he expects you to remember everything....like overheads he puts up are even on the test
No Comments
Simply put, this is the WORST class I have ever taken in college (and I'm a 5th year senior). Boring as hell, way too long, ungodly amounts of reading, and the tests are graded extremely hard. This guy is nice as a person, but dreadful as a teacher.
worst class by FAR that i've had at jmu..acts like you have no work for other classes besides his..boring is an understatement, assigns a rediculous amount of reading for a gened..tests suck and are hard..in discussions he makes you feels stupid if you don't know all the material..DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!
I hate everything about this stupid class, material is interesting but he is a terrible teacher...and a boring one for that matter...he is way too hard for a freshman class and acts so pompous towards the students...i can't comprehend how terrible this class or this professor is, worst class by far!
Great teacher! He knows his history well and makes class interesting! Especially if you are military oriented
He's a very knowledgeable professor..and has really limited tolerance for kids who aren't doing their work. If you're a hard worker and take good notes, you should do fine.
he is generally cool, lectures dont suck as long as you know who the people are he throws up on the overhead and can answer his random questions. He knows the material and makes it interesting. Tests are really hard, unless of course you know that Lawrence Washington led the dragoons NOT the calvary! and that hes Georges first cousin.
This guy is the worst professor i have ever had! He makes you feel stupid for asking questions and his tests are ridiculously difficult. You have to know all the tiny details for his test, i don't think you need to have any kind of grasp on the big picture, just the idiotic details.
no good very broing and makes you feel dumb...dont do it
Knows more about military history then any professor I have ever met. Likes to test on random smaller battles and lesser known leaders. Essays are not the easiest. Lectures are somewhat interesting. Not a bad class to take if you are a history major. one paper and 3 exams. No attendance policy, but he knows if you aren't there
Get out while you can! You are lucky to come out of the class with a C. Tests are extremely difficult, essays are boring, and lectures put most people to sleep. He's not very helpful and doesn't answer questions. My suggestion...take U.S. Gov. instead!
Meixsel was pretty cool! Class wasn't difficult if you understand basic tactics. I found the material fascinating. He makes random jokes only funny to history nerds. Would recommend.
Do not take this class unless you have a background and/or a STRONG interest in military history. He is a decent professor, but this class is difficult if you're not interested in the topic. Readings can be excruciating (ex: 35 pages on the design of a type of cannon used in one battle). Requires careful attention to details on exams.
I didnt really read the textbook at all, and ended up with a B+ in the class as a history minor. he grades tough on the tests, and the ids are mostly obscure things he mentions in class and not the well known or broad topics he covers. not a bad class though, def interesting.
Get out! Get out! Get out! There are only 3 tests, but that are all horrible. I would not recommend this class to anyone!
I had this guy last year through some difficult times in my college career. I remember a lot of sleep. I showed up every class, mix of wonderful and boring discussions. Somehow passed all my tests, and handed in my papers (very late) in the last week of class. Guess what, I passed the class! It wasn't bad, but it could get better.
unlike most history classes he actually covers every topic in the syllabus up to the 1960s. Classes are really big but he does his best to give individual help with assignments. The tests are really hard but he does curve the grades and gives you a choice if you want multiple choice or essay, so that helps students draw on their strengths.
Gives you a really good overview of American History. Hard test, but manageable. Have to go to small lecture groups and talk, to get participation points. Recommand taking in the afternoon, beacuse his lectures can seem to drag on sometimes.
Three tests, three papers, and a final. Meixsel is a nice guy and although he can be monotone sometimes, makes little jokes and tries to help you. Tests are hard, but there's a big curve and you can choice multiple choice or essay. Nice guy and a great class that covers a lot of material, interesting movie clips every class! I'd recommend him!
i wanted to be a history major..until i took this class. the lectures are really clear and intersting if you like history, but the mc tests are impossible. my best grade was a 76 and that was after 6 hours of studying. 2 5 pg papers as well which arent bad. overall i thought he was really arrogant & purposefully tried to fail everyone for fun.
I'm not going to lie, his tests are really hard, but overall he's a really nice guy if you get to know him. He's willing to help you out if you take the time to go in and see him or talk to him after class. Ask him to look at your papers before you turn them in (trust me this helped me out so much; i got an A on both papers!).
The lectures are fascinating and the tests come straight from them. I havn't even opened my textbook and have a solid B in the class. The are pretty hard though and need to know the minute details. He is extremely helpful, just make sure you go to his office for extra help. The amount of work you put into this class clearly effects your grade.
Tests are hard but 3 papers help boost grade. If you go to discussion and talk about readings its worth nearly 20%. You need to study really hard but right now I'm getting a B without reading the Nations text. Hard but learned a lot.
Tests are impossible! Choice between essay or multiple choice - but both are way too detailed for a gened history class. I used to get A's in history, I barely pulled a D on his tests. 3 short papers are easy though, participation boosts your grade. If you go to class and pay attention, you can pass, but take someone else if you can.
this class was almost the death of me! the first test i got a D on...and it barely went up from there. he doesn't post lecture notes online, so write down EVERYTHING he says. the only good grades i got in that class were the 3 papers--i got A's...that basically saved me from not failing the class. AVOID TAKING HIM, the stress is not worth it!
This class was challenging but I learned a ton. The final isn't cumulative, and he assigns three papers which really will boost your grade. I'm not very good at history but I got a B+ in the class. His lectures are very clear. Just manage your time and study the lecture notes and you will do fine!
Take another professor if you can! You can pass, but the stress is not worth it...Choice between multiple choice and essay tests; both are not passable. 3 papers are easy and that's about it. Go to class and pay attention, and you might be able to get a D or C on his tests, but you could do much better with another professor.
Meixsel thinks that everyone of his students are history majors. History has always been my passion, but his tests are simply impossible! 3 tests (1's the midterm, 1 is the final), and 3 papers. If it wasn't for his TA, I certainly would have failed...
The class sounds cool, but this guy squashes all that is fun with learning of wars in Europe. This guy's voice and ability to teach are heinous. He doesnt really use powerpoint for notes but you have to just listen to him and figure out what is important that comes out of his mouth. DO NOTTAKEHIM. Take him if you like reading large books every week
One midterm, one test, one final. Three papers. Tests are multiple choice but very, very difficult. Going to class helps but not that much. Papers are graded by TA and are fairly easy and short (3-4 pages each) Not an exciting class and much harder than other american history classes. Take someone else if you want to avoid very hard tests.
While Dr. Meixsel has a monotone voice, he's a great teacher. He loves teaching history and is always willing to clarify a point if you ask. He'll give you a bunch of great facts as well! The tests are challenging, BUT its more than possible to get an A or B in the class. Go to class, discussion section and do the reading. The papers are not hard.
Prof. Meixsel is a terrible teacher. His goal is to prove you know nothing about history rather than actually make an effort to teach you. The textbook is useless for this course-no point in even purchasing it. His lectures are dreadful-his monotone voice and sense of humor are terrible. This course is a waste of your time!!
boring prof but really nice...has 3 papers & 2 exams - u dont need the book (i nvr even looked at it)...GO TO EVERY LECTURE & almost all his discussions b/c it DOES help ur grade...study by takin good notes & then typin it all up via outlining n just memorize...gettin an A or B IS VERY possible in his class
make sure you attend all lectures even though it can be a bore because THAT IS the test. the writing option is better, in my opinion, because you just have to memorize the notes. his tests are not the easiest, but possible if you try. and definately participate here and there during discussion and read.
not gonna lie it is A LOT of reading. he definitely knows his stuff when it comes to military during WWII and i learned so much. he may come off a little cold but he's actually really helpful. has an interesting sense of humor. lets you write your paper on any topic. take it, it's not that painful
Grades very hard and essay questions on tests are impossible. He honestly does not care if his student do well. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN AVOID IT
awful class. It was so boring and his voice is so monotonous. Any teacher that starts the year by saying the class isn't going to be fun is not a teacher you want to take. Stay away at all costs!!
He is very narcissistic. Also LOVES to make fun of your answers and shoot them down at the discussion. Grades papers extremely harsh. On our two midterms the class average was a "D" and he refused to curve. Issues between 4-10 hours worth of reading a week (3-5 main chapters plus 5-8 discussion stories). The hate for him was tangible in the room.
If you don't have a friend in an earlier discussion class, be prepared to fail the quizzes. Tests are based off his slides though, so if you wrote all that down, you'll be okay. Pretty monotone guy but as the semester progressed he grew on me and if you speak up in class he's not too bad.
So I'm taking this class and after 2 (yes, 2) essay-format midterms, my confidence is gone. I studied my butt off and really knew the material. This guy, however, likes to grade the essays as if you should know as much about history as him. Instead of teaching, I think this guy gets a kick out of tearing apart essay answers and destroying GPAs.
Lectures are boring, but overall this wasn't a bad class. Although lectures aren't mandatory, I recommend going because if the essays on your tests aren't detailed you won't get a good grade. 3 essay tests, 2 3 page essays and discussion participation make up your grade, so if you do poorly on one test, you have the opportunity to make up for it.
This class took up all of my time studying. All of the tests are essays, even final and midterm. There is no discussion during lecture. You just sit there and take A LOT of notes! He does know a lot about history though. However,I do not recommend taking this class if you want an A. You wont get it, and i studied HARD.
This class was one of the most boring things I have ever experienced. Sitting through it was literally hell. He is not the least bit helpful in any sense. I went to office hours and all he ever told me to do was study more. Extremely hard grader. Requires a "master level" of knowledge to get an A in a GEN ED! Absolutely ridiculous avoid at all cost
You need to know details for the test. They are al essays. The final is 4 essays. It's not easy. I would recommend going to class and discussion. If you are confused go to office hours. His review sessions before exams are great. He would sometimes give one or two of the questions or questions that would be similar on the exam.
There is a lot of reading and if you miss class at all, you are significantly behind and it becomes impossible to catch up. He is very understanding and willing to work with students if they come to him with a problem, but he is very dry and bland in his lectures.
Most boring class. He talks down to students who don't know the correct answers and acts as though he is extremely superior. I, personally, was not comfortable with attending his class. Course requires a high level of knowledge. All of his exams are essays. I probably won't do too well in this course.
Try to find another professor. He expects you to know as much as he does about history and makes you feel dumb when you don't. There is a ton of reading and if you don't read and get asked a question in discussion he'll take points off. He is arrogant and unreasonable for a GenEd.
Professor Meixsel is a great professor, his lectures are very interesting and he gives a good overview of U.S. History. The course it not too hard, there are 3 test all essay based which is a lot of writing, but you can easily get an A if you listen during lectures. Meixsel is also very helpful and friendly if you get to know him. Would Recommend.
Not the most pleasant guy, but he will give you some help if you go to his office hours. Make sure you read the primary documents for the discussion sessions, because they are based on participation. Two all-essay exams; you choose 3 of 6 prompts. Two 3-page essay assignments.
He gives a mid-term and a final and theyre both all essay and you just have to show your knowledge on the topic in the essay. His lectures are interesting and he really enjoys the subject. Definitely doable if you set up a good amount of time to read for the discussion sessions and a good amount of time for the tests. Also has 2 easy papers.
I absolutely hate history and was dreading this class. However, I got an A- by going to office hours and taking good notes in class. Although Meixsel is a boring lecturer, he is a great professor. He answered all my questions and helped me out tremendously. Before the midterm and final he has review sessions where he gives away questions. Take him!
absoutely horrible. any professor that starts the first day of class with "after today you should decide if you want to listen to me lecture for the rest of the year" is a professor you shouldn't take. He gets mad when no one participates but then you try and he makes fun of your answer. Ridiculous expectations for a gen ed DO NOT TAKE
Meixsel is a pretty chill dude. The lecture is big so you don't have to participate. Skim the chapters and take good notes and the tests, which are all essays, won't be that hard. Discussion was pretty boring. You go over primary documents that you're supposed to read and he calls on people but they usually don't know the answers lol.
The lectures are so boring but you need to go because attendance is mandatory and all the notes help you on the midterm and final AKA the only two tests all year. There is one paper, but it's pretty easy; however, the main thing about this class is GO TO EVERY DISCUSSION CLASS. He adds 8 points to your final grade, yes 8 points on you FINAL GRADE!!
His class is a bit bland, but if you're interested in the topic it's pretty good. A lot of reading, two exams and one paper. Not too terribleness (as a history minor), and the man definitely knows his stuff. Will take again for HIST 301
im not a history major. this class sucks. I'm falling asleep just thinking about sitting through a lecture. zzzzzzz
Not a professor I'd recommend. I'm not a history major, but have always enjoyed history classes and this one was a snooze to sit through. His lectures are bland. The discussion sessions are alright, but he'll call on people randomly to answer & if you don't know he'll often smirk and judge you. Few tests, papers, etc. A lot of reading required.
Prepare yourselves with lots of lube because you'll need it for when he destroys you. Most boring lecturer I've ever had. Also likes to ask irrelevant questions. Sorry I don't know the musket model Monsiuer Jacques Rochelle used in Napoleon's 79254825th army of Toulouse... Wants to see every possible detail in essays- caution his chicken scratch!
Boring but lecture is long but the information is easy, discussion is just extra points so show up and you get credit. 2 tests plus a final and 2 essay assignments which arent hard at all. Test are either essay or multiple choice. Doesnt but grades in canvas which is annoying.
He is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. The exams are all written essay, which he doesn't give the prompts for ahead of time so it is all from memory. Expects us to know the subject like the back of our hand. DO NOT TAKE!
just don't, that is all I have to say save yourself
Professor Meixsel for starters is a very harsh grader. He is very lecture heavy and his classes takes attendance. Professor Meixsel is very inconsiderate to any kind of problem you may have dealing with his class or not. He does not care if you fail, does not offer any help. Overall, just a really bad professor.
Professor Meixsel doesn't have many positives to mention. Lectures are extremely boring and he doesn't post the slides, so if you miss you'll have no idea what the lecture was. Lots of reading, but I almost never read the textbook and I was fine. He's a super tough grader, I studied TONS and only managed B's on most things. Very arrogant, just dont
He is the worst professor i have ever had. His grading is ridiculous because of his unrealistic expectations. Does not care for his students and couldn't care less what grade you got.
I would really try to avoid taking him. His grading criteria is very unclear, and he is very condescending towards students during lectures/ discussions. His tests are all essay, and he expects you to know everything about the subject. If you try to go to office hours his advice is very unhelpful. This is the worst class I've ever taken at JMU.
Professor Meixsel had ridiculous expectations for grading! Even when I read the whole textbook front to back he critically graded all of my papers. I took two history classes last semester and my other history professor was no where near as picky as Meixsel is. Along with that his lectures are the most boring things ever!
This guy is so old school. The only two exams we had were essays in class and we had to write them in BlueBooks or else he would fail us. We also were not able to receive a passing grade if we did not do all of the assignments. Not only did the students never know what was happening, the TA's didn't either. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Does not care if you fail or pass. Will fail you if you don't do every single assignment. Never communicated what was expected and how things were graded. The TA's also never knew what he wanted. If you didn't get everything on the slide in class, you wouldn't get it later, never uploaded things to canvas. Old school, in the worst ways possible.
