good teaching methods, easy to understand, easy tests
Usually gives essay tests or one 15-page perm paper. Funny guy.
really enjoyed this guy. very helpful.
This class is a little boring, but he does a very very good job of teaching the information. He doesn't go straight by the book, he does it his own way, which is the easiest way to understand it. He also tells you what is going to be on the tests!
This class was not what I expected. He is very confusing in his teaching methods. The book that is required for the course isn't much help. It's a bunch of opinions, so how could any one answer be right...Don't take the course!
This class wasn't what I expected it to be. But over all it was interesting. He is hillarious. He doesn't take attendence. Make sure that you go to class though because the book makes no sence. Study off his notes.
Very easy going and laid back. If you're good at problem solving or math, I would recommend him for this class. Homework is extra credit on test.
Class not as easy as u mite think. His lectures r very boring- u can easily get a good nap, but u need 2 take notes from them. Tests are short ans. & essay. Doesn't take attendance.
class is a little bit boring and prone to napping but it can be very interesting some days. tests are essay format. must read book if u plan to pass.
He is an extremely intelligent man...definitely knows what he is talking about. For every homework you do, he will add one point to your test and lets you retake one of your tests at the end of the semester. He really does appreciate philosophy and I would reccommend him to anyone interested.
I was disappointed that this class was not more interesting. i was hoping that this professor would focus on the historical political philosophy of western societies as they relate to actual existing societies. we never talked about karl marx or the important...blah blah...Miller = bad! ahhhh grrrr!
He's soooo boring.....and all his lectures are opinionated. Don't take this class. His thoughts are socialistic, and it's too easy to fall asleep and then fail.
Political Philosophy is an interesting class for me but I don't know if I can speak for everyone else. He has good, dry humor and gives great stories sometimes. The Parable of The Mule was awesome.
Dr.Miller is a very helpful teacher. You must go to class in order to do good though. Tests are not that hard but if you do not go to class they would be extremly difficult.
The book doesn't help you at all it is very unclear and confusing. You haev to go to class and take notes everyday to understand. Im pretty sure he just makes up grades at the end of the semester. He is really boring and i wouldn't recommend him for a early class. The class was not fun at all.
Great teacher. Really understanding. Gives points for raising objections and good arguments. If you are not good at philosophy I suggest you stay away, but then again if you can't do philosophy then you shouldn't try.
Boring, bad humor. Just not a fun class. He gets old very quick
a great professor! we had interesting topics and discussed issues I had never thought of before. he makes you think. very cool.
You don't need the book. Will make the test open notes if you push for it. No attendance policy. Take notes and you should be fine. You only get three grades total, 3 tests. An easy B if you go to class, but most likely you'll have a hard time getting an A the way he grades.
Smart man. Boring Class. Bad Combination. Tests are essay, he gives a study guide but it still doesn't help that much. If you have to take this class take it later on in the day, you MIGHT actually stay awake then. Never ever again...
Smart professor. No attendence policy. Homework is extra credit! Do it! Study your notes and you'll do fine! Recommend!
Really clear teacher...makes things a lot easier than the book does..very fair teacher...no attendence policy but it helps 100% in this class to actually go. Homework about every night but very simple, next day in class he checks it off and you get an extra credit point for each assignment on every test, most are from 4-8 points which helps a lot.
Difficult class. Tells good jokes in a corny way, but not the best teacher, too smart to put things in layman's terms. ask him for help and he will give it to you though.
Easiest class I have EVER taken, including elementary school!
The guy is a great teacher. He will seriously wait until you fully understand something before he moves on. He won't let the constraints of how much he has to get done hold him back from slowing down. Just go to class and do the homework...medium A, easy B.
He is super easy he will give you all the answers if you ask
Very good teach. Can be boring but will go over everything until you understand it. Just got to class, pay attention, take good notes and study for the test and its EASY!
Very interesting. You must be a thinker to pass this class, and good notetaking is essential. Listen and write down everything he says.
Class is very very very boring. No worries he doesnt take attendance and he goes over the study guide so you know everything for the test. He curves final grade. Don't buy the books, u dont need them. Very boring, easy B study easy A. Oh, and he clears his throat constantly, like over 100 times a class.
I was totally not looking forwarad to this class, but it turned out to not be so bad. He speaks in monotone, which can be pretty boring, but he does make some interesitng points. Don't worry if you don't understand the book he explains it all. He clears his throat constantly, which is really annoying. It's freezing in Brewster so bring a sweatshirt
This class was incredibly boring. I fell asleep at least once a week and I'm not that kind of a student. However, he doesn't take attendance and will go over things to clarify. His exams come from his study guides too, so always attend the exam review day. Not too hard but if you have him, get some coffee beforehand.
BORING! I was so looking forward to this class, but he changed that. 9:30am so grab lots of coffee. Not what I expected and I am really into critical thinking. Attendance not mandatory and he tells you when quizzes are. homework not mandatory but very helpful. You have to be really into this class to go.

Ok so philosphy may not be the most interesting subject but my overall experience was good. I would suggest taking Dr. Miller if you want to pass philosophy. I studied the night before the test and received an B.
very enjoyable if you are into philosophy or a philosophy major which I am both. I can see how he can come off as dry and boring if you don't like the subject matter but he does an excellent job of explaining things in very basic terms for introductory students.
Boring class but you have to think. He gives homework just about every night but it is extra credit toward your final exam grade. You get to retake your quiz up to three times. He is very willing to help you during office hours. I have had Dr. Miller twice and would recommend anyone taking any philosophy class to take him.
He looks like Hillary Clinton's twin brother (seriously). He knows his stuff of course but doesn't seem excited to teach like he's forced to. Will help but sometimes he goes too fast before you can absorb the information.
He makes the material as easy as he can. I love to argue, which made the class fun for me. Class can get boring, especially if you take it early, but overall I had a good experience.
RUUUUUNNNNNN!!!! Do not take philosophy 1500 under this man. He is book sense with no common sense! He assigns homework every night, but does not give credit for problems correct on the exams. He takes points off the entire exam for everyone that you get incorrect. You will receive no credit for problems attempted or correct.
Miller Rules!!!
Easy course (for some people), plus Dr. Miller's a pretty good teacher. All-in-all, a great course to take over the summer!
Horrible teacher! Does not make any sense, does not explain any meanings. Very boring also. He allows quiz retakes, but if you get a lower score on that one, he takes that one. So youre screwed. Do not take!!
There are only 2 good things about him and this class: he does not take attendance, and you are able to retake the quizzes online as many times as you want until you get the grade you want. Other than that, he is unhelpful and unclear. The only way you learn is by teaching yourself, and most people can't. DONT TAKE HIM!
There are a few pluses to the class, you can take the quizzes online as many times as you need, he puts reading materials on blackboard so if you don't go to class, which is not mandatory, you aren't completely lost and he uses terms and mnemonics in class that make the material easier to understand and remember.
This guy is awful! class average for tests were 50 on 2 out of the 4 exams given. DONT TAKE HIM, YOU'LL FAIL. i did.
It was rough semester to begin with but I still, miraculously, finished this class with an A-. I worked very hard and only missed one class. He was very helpful, especially once we started talking during class. Talk to him if you have questions in his office. Please read the book and maybe take a different professor unless you are a science major.
WORST TEACHER OF ECU. NOT HELPFUL, TERRIBLE AT EXPLAINING THE MATERIAL, SEEMS TO NOT CARE AT ALL ABOUT HIS STUDENTS. HIS MIDTERM IS WORTH 35% OF UR OVERALL GRADE AND ITS 100 QUESTIONS AND THE HARDEST TEST IVE EVER TAKEN. ..there are senior philo majors who say they may have to retake this course because its so hard. DONT TAKE MILLER
I had this beautiful man for into to Oceanography, and let me tell you, he is one in a million. He's really strange, but he describes things in a way that makes them easy to grasp, if you pay attention. He'll occasionally bring in demonstrations and things he makes at home to help. Super interesting guy, too. He worked for NASA!
An awful teacher, was unhelpful, and a total pain. Didn't teach along with lecture slides, and is way too picky with exam layout. Totally regret taking his class.
Great Professor he knows what he is talking about and loves what he does. He tries to make it as exciting as possible. I went in nervous as I am not a science person but he is helpful and will give you the grade you deserve. Go to class an do the extra credit quizzes he gives and you will do just fine! He will make you think and apply yourself.
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken. I did not understand the material whatsoever and the tests are pick 10/12 short answer questions. Basically I memorized 14 pages of notes word by word at the end. Terrible class! Tests are the only grade, I hardly made a C.
By far the most influential person I meet at ECU. This man will bring out the best in you. A real joy to get to know outside of class. He will bend over backwards to help you understand. This class is a level 1000, but is really hard. I took orgo at the same time and found orgo easier. Great teacher, even better person...
This class was a bit of a struggle. The extra credit on the tests are hidden in his lecture slide BUT sometimes he will repeat them on other tests. I made D's on every test and then pulled my grade up to a B- because his final consisted of all 3 test questions combined. STUDY THE SLIDES, knowing the vocab helps. And you will survive!!
easy class if you like philosophy.
This guy is pretty decent. The class itself is actually reallllly boring and he clears his throat every 5 seconds but he is really nice and if you study the notes tests aren't too hard. Overall ok class. Would prefer him over other teachers I've heard about.
Very difficult course; I ended up spending a lot more time on this course and still not acing it. The professor is boring and there is a lot of material covered. Went to office hours, which helped a bit but not much. The only grades are exams, which are extremely difficult. Overall, I wish I had taken a different science course.
To me, this class was easy. Your grade is based on your test scores so you have to well on the tests to get a good grade. All the stuff you need to know for the test is said in class so go. Just because he puts the notes on the BB doesn't mean you should not go to class. You should because it will help your grade.
run run rurn this is a terrible class it is soooo hard. This class might as well be in chinese! the final is worth 50% of your grade yes thats right 50%!!! yeah pick something else to take
If you take this class you actually need to class everyday & do the reading to understand the material, he post notes online but you will not understand them if you missed the lecture. He puts his own spin on the material so looking up information online is hard. He is very helpful and will met you to answer and of your questions.
Extremely difficult class.
Miller is awesome! You reall don't even have to read the material as long as you go to every lecture. No assignments. Only 3 tests which sounds scary but if you review your lecture slides and notes you're solid.
Tests come mostly from the lecture. Doesn't hurt to do a little back ground reading on Sparknotes. Reading assignments are easy, just tedious and if you do discussion boards, you may be exempt from final.
There are 14 quizzes and 1 cumulative final. You have to get a 90 on each quiz to progress to the next. Yes, they got harder, but if you pass all the quizzes and get a 40 on the exam, you still get an A basically. Very straightforward course! No textbook, only powerpoints he posts.
GO TO CLASS
I don't know how the average up here says A- I barely made it in the class I got a C. You MUST go to class and study very hard in order to succeed. Miller is good at explaining stuff but lectures are super long which it isn't his fault that Philosophy is one of those kinds of subjects. I'm just glad I passed tbh.
This class was extremely hard, only class I didn't recieve an A or B in. All based off exams and you have to read the book to pass, which isn't too bad but he is very sarcastic and sometimes seemingly rude
I took Intro to Philosophy and the class was extremely boring. Everyday there was another lecture that consisted of a long powerpoint. He doesn't give much effort towards class discussion to discuss the topics and if you have issues with the material you have to email him or speak to him after class. The subject matter is good and interesting.
Loved this class! Homework is optional. Mostly reading. Super interesting lectures that make you think! Looked forward to each lecture. He's very passionate about philosophy and knows it well.
Class isn't mandatory but you need to go. His lectures are long and you will never get out early. Most of the texts are kinda cumulative so if you study the previous tests you are guaranteed to get those questions correct. A good half of his tests and matching and another good part is fill in the blank.
Online course seems simple: Get a 90 on a quiz to get access to the next. Do 14 quizzes you get a B. Take the quizzes whenever and however many times you want. All seems fine and dandy but the quizzes have faulty questions. The same question might be True on one quiz then False on the next. I recommend taking it on campus.
Amazing course and professor. Lectures are long and you will rarely leave early, but they have important information for exams. Classes are not mandatory and the only homework you will have is reading, which is optional. If you have questions he is very helpful in answering any doubts. BE INVOLVED in discussion board!!!
I took his class in Summer 2016. It was very interesting. He starts class on time, gives good feedback and is very helpful when it comes to assignments. Be sure to PARTICIPATE it's a BIG part of your grade. Also, if you don't understand something GO TO HIM. He likes to see that you're serious about his course. Be sure to take it seriously!
Took him over the summer for a needed Phil class (clearly I don't know much about Philosophy) asked for help, and he was rude and directed me to the useless powerpoints. Would not recommend taking over the summer.
Lecture heavy class, confusing at times, but interesting. Participation matters! Especially on the discussion boards (sometimes extra credit). I have some friends who are also taking philosophy, but with different professors. I definitely think Miller was the best pick.
Took this as a humanities or social science credit and thought it would be easy. It's 14 quizzes that are pace yourself, however these quizzes are the hardest things I've ever taken and it took me the allotted 10 times on almost every quiz to get a 90 or better. Would not recommend if you are looking for an easy online class.
Professor Miller is very qualified to teach this course on paper, he has a lot of real life experience in the field but his teaching is absolutely horrible. The exams are impossible, class average is never above a 65%. If you're going to take this course at ECU I recommend taking it with the other professor.
The most boring professor I've ever encountered. His lectures are ridiculously boring and his exams are made up of irrelevant material. He doesn't give study guides and his lectures are long and pointless. I would not take his course ever again.
OH DEAR LORD WHERE DO I START WITH THIS DUDE. Him preparing you for an exam is like giving a person a spoon to fight off a room full of cougars. I copied his PowerPoints WORD FOR WORD (he doesn't use a textbook) and studied for days only to get a 70 on my first exam. I made my own study guide and the questions were still impossible. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
If you go to class and look over the powerpoints, you can do okay on the tests. It helps to read the assigned books to do even better. Discussion boards offer some extra credit, but they're hard to get the credit for. Lectures the entire class period
Worst professor I have ever had. Studied the power points for hours and even made my own study guides and I would still do bad on the tests. I never missed a day of class and when I asked for extra credit he turned me down. Lectures are very boring and make no sense. Do not take this class.
Exams were too long not enough time to finish. I would not recommend taking this teacher for any class.
This easily is the most likeable class i've taken at ECU! 14 quizzes, you have to score a 90 or better to move on to the next quiz. U do the work on your own time. His tutorials and powerpoints help a ton with understanding, so look to those if ur confused. Complete all 14 & you receive a B. Optional final exam.
The tests were really easy if you pay attention to lectures and powerpoints. Attendance isnt mandatory, he puts powerpoints online but it helps to listen to his explanations. DO THE DISCUSSION BOARDS!!!!
I took the online version. 14 quizzes and you have to score a 90 or better to move on to the next quiz. Final exam is only mandatory if you want to receive a grade better than a B. Look over the PowerPoints a few times and you should be fine for the quizzes. For the final it's a bunch of questions from the previous exams so just look over those.
On paper, this course sounds fairly easy. You have 14 quizzes and a final exam. The catch is that you can't move on to the next quiz until you get a 90 on the one you are on. THIS IS MUCH HARDER THAN YOU THINK. It was nothing for me to spend 3 or more hours retaking the same quiz and his final is very difficult. 10/10 would not recommend.
Miller is very passionate about philosophy! Class is very interesting! He lets the class discuss with him and each other. DO THE DISCUSSION BOARDS! You will have a chance of given an AUTOMATIC A without taking the final. His tests are okay not the easiest but weren't impossible to pass. Again, DO THE DISCUSSION BOARD and RESPOND to people also!
I absolutely LOVED this class! I have never taken any previous philosophy classes, so as an introduction, this was fantastic! Literally, just show up to class and take notes on his powerpoints. You can probably get away without doing the readings (I did lol) His tests are multiple choice and exactly what he taught in class! Such a sweet guy!!!
This class is self paced online course. There are 14 modules (about 10 slides each). You look at the PP and take a quiz. You get as many chances as you need to score a 90 and then you move on. Very easy. I completed the class with an A in less than 3 weeks. I never even spoke to the professor and I actually learned the material.
The class was easy! Pay attention to the slides and you will pass each quiz given and the practice exam is the same as the final exam so make sure you do that and take notes!
Only grades in the class were quizzes and tests for each chapter. Read your powerpoints and you will pass. Took it online... would be a lot harder in person in my opinion.
An online course, super easy and many people finished in a month. Go through the power points, take the quiz and move on. Kinda fool proof and he expects everyone to pass with an A. Would def take this course again and the work is very easy. Never heard much from him but a good class.
I literally have a 100 in the class at the moment. 1-3 quizzes each week, sometimes a DB, no exams except final. If you read the ppts you can get 100s on the quizzes that you have 3 attempts on and are timed 10 mins each. Very sweet man but he talked too slow so I switched to the online course.
This was an all online class, 14 quizzes and you have to score a 90 in order to move on. I had been struggling on one topic for a week so I decided to reach out to Dr. Miller, he was flat out rude in his response. I was sort of taken back by this, I have never had a professor respond to me in this manner. I would never take another class w him.
He was about 1000 years old and bored me to tears every class. Exams were entirely free response (handwritten) and VERY difficult. He also waited until the last day of the semester to put in any grades so I had no idea how I was going to fair until grades came out. Horrible professor.
Only grades are 14 quizzes and all have quizlets on them. You do have to pass them with 90% though, but you have 10 attempts to each quiz and each one is 20 q's and online lecture slides to learn the material. Professor is very responsive and will give more attempts if struggling with quizzes. Class goes at own pace, nothing is graded less for late
This was a self paced online class. Exam is only mandatory if you want to have a B or higher in class. The homework quizzes are extremely difficult but if you are savvy you will find ways to pass. The presentations on homework critiera are unhelpful. You get 10 trys for each quiz, you must make a 90+ to move to next section. Dont take for just elec
He's so sweet and easy curriculum. Bit of a slow talker due to age, but his class is so easy. Would 100% take his class again. He can also be lenient if you're nice! 1 quiz a week graded pass/fail but you can retake it till you pass, as many times as u need.
Requires you to get a 90% on each quiz to move forward to the next module. Will give you unlimited attempts but requires you to get that 90. Literally failed the course because he refuses to give me the 80/85 I kept getting. Be prepared to spend way too long on an easy quiz.
Whatever you do, DO NOT take this class. I know multiple people, including myself who are forced to withdrawal and lose credit hours due to the fact that this class is extremely difficult. You cannot move on to the next quiz until you get a 90 on the previous quiz. This is extremely frustrating when you have already taken it multiple times.
This self-paced online class requires a lot of effort. The quizzes are challenging, with a 90% pass rate needed to progress. But the material is manageable, and Unstuck ai proved helpful for study prep. Overall, a decent course if you're willing to put in the work.
