He is experienced in teaching. He's really passionate&patient. His blocking plan&P.I.E. format are really useful for writing essays. He chooses interesting topics n provokes inspiring class discussion;I'm sure everyone will get a new concept of conformity, modern marriage, advertisements and poverty.Work hard&hand in work on time.i got an A,it pays off.
I reli like him. He's passionate&patient. His blocking plan&PIE format provide an easier way to write an essay.his class includes topics like peer pressure, marriage, advertising&poverty.Class discussion is inspiring.if you take his class, you will really learn how to think.taking his class is quite comfortable.hand in hw on time&you'll get full mark.
attendance is not mandatory just hand in the essays reading questions will be fine.....he focuses on essays but you got chances to rewrite and your grade is the rewrite one..though the word limit is1500, but i just wrote around a thousand and i got A- for my essays.
fair grader!! but he wants perfect essays from studs
nice guy...class's like book sharing section...hes like a friend....
not that hard to get an A..but not very easy
harder..but fair
a good class
probably the most hardest class i have ever take. very strict to your attendence. heavy workload. hard grader. if you want to get an "A", he is not your choice.do not recommended!
I had such a great experience with him as my professor! His class is definitely not a walk in the park & he takes punctuality + attendance very seriously. He loves students that participate & is fair when it comes to grading. Getting a B wasn't that difficult but getting an A takes some serious work!
I genuinely learned a lot from this instructor. He is friendly, humorous and organized. Clear handouts and instructions. Ensure that everything is keeping up with the schedule. His assignments and in-class activities really train students to think critically, and helped me so much to succeed in college writing! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Drops your grade a little bit if you're late to class/absent.. accuses you of cheating.. I think I'm pretty smart but this guy's class is pretty damn difficult. I got the first C in my college career from his English 1B class...
Professor Mills is probably the best teacher for English. He is really encouraging and gives wonderful insight to the material. He really likes students that participate and make an effort in the class. If you try, you should do fine. An A is a little tough to get but not impossible. He is definitely worth having as a teacher.
amazing teacher!! went into this class hating english and within the first few weeks looked forward to this class even at 730am! super passionate about english and has amazingly good ideas to help you write essays! work load is not bad. great class! def take eng with him if you can! really good looking to!
The subjects of the essays other than the obedience essay were uninspiring to me. Often times, class discussion is mind numbing, and everyone tries too hard to sound like an intellectual. I wish he was more into using the internet instead of giving us handouts. To conclude, I like the guy, but dread his class
He will help you if you take the time to think of something to ask. In other words, if you try, he will be incredibly helpful. Very nice guy, sounds hella smart, and makes his points clear. Take him!
actually learned a lot about writing college essays& if you show up and do the work you'll do well.
At first i was not too happy to have an English class at 7:30am but class was really interesting. He is very helpful. Class is mostly group/class discussion, but they greatly help develop ideas for the upcoming essay. Follow directions, pay attention, do homework and you'll do fine. Great teacher, really enjoyed taking his class!
He was really clear, well-articulate and good-looking. He's really nice and will help you out in office hours if needed. The class was tougher than I'd expected though!
Great class...
I enjoyed his class, & he's very involved in helping students succeed in the class. He is patient and gives pretty good feedback. It is also very easy to ask questions and for help. As long as you attend class & participate, you'll do fine!
Very thurough and helpful. A little repetitive during lectures but it only makes you understand/learn more. Excellent teacher for people who really want to learn
He really made me excited to learn and improve. I wanted him to be impressed because I knew he knew what he was talking about. He explains things in great details and now I finally know how to write a strong thesis.
He's a really good teacher. I really enjoyed his class and learned a lot. He encourages group discussion and you will get more out of it if you speak up. He is mostly lecture based, so make sure that's how you learn. He's pretty to look at but he also has a very soothing voice. Sometimes, it made me want to sleep. Not in a bad way, just calming.
Richard Mills is a great teacher. Strongly recommend him! He is everything a good teacher needs to be - encouraging, focused and the way that he structures his classes are really good. You are always prepared for midterms and finals with his help. One of the best teachers I have had - and then I have had many.
Nice man. Tougher grader than I thought he would be. Might be tough to get an A in his class. Makes a lot of hand gestures and tends to explain things like students are fifth graders. Gives helpful lessons on writing essays. Overall one of my better teachers.
Such a nice teacher. Loves teaching. Very clear, understanding, encouraging and motivating teacher. Very supportive. Be sure though that you attend class. One of the best teachers that I have ever had. I was so surprised of his teaching skills and his passion for English! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! :)
EXTREMELY GOOD! I WILL NOT HAVE HIS CLASS ANYMORE AND I AM SAD ABOUT IT! take his class while you have the chance to. he is definitely one of the best teachers ever! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ! Your grades are solely from the essays, always give full marks for homework and other stuffs as long as you do it.
Foothill is lucky to have such a great professor. I felt that I really found a diamond in the rough when in this classroom. Great guy, smart, friendly, great looking and sets you up for success if you are willing to do your part. Whatever grade you receive is earned whether it is a C or an A. consider yourself lucky to get into this class!
By FAR the best English teacher I have ever had and easily the best at Foothill. IF you enjoy success in your courses, take this course with Mills. If you are afraid to work for it, your loss, dude. Fantastic class, brilliant instructor.
He is an amazing teacher! He is super understanding, and always wants to help with any issue (both personal, and in class). He has a sweet voice and very calming but incredibly interesting. One of my favorite teachers i'v ever had.
My first impression of Mr. Mills was that he looked like Ben Affleck. I honestly thought this was going to be a "let's just get this over with" class, but I ended up really enjoying it! Mr. Mills is one THE MOST understanding, personable teacher I have ever had. He's always willing to help and honestly changed my outlook in life.. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
He's cool. Friendly and helpful. Most of his classes are discussion, which I find really boring. Easy grader, so if you can endure the class discussion, go for it.
Impossible to fail his class. He is so kind, genuine, and you feel safe in his class environment. Works with every student, and answers all questions, he reaches out to everyone one on one. He is clear in everything he wants, and helps you through every step. Obliges to help outside of class and work with your schedule. You truly learn so much
He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is super friendly and nice. His class is also well organized. highly recommended!
Mills is a great professor! Very amiable and encouraging person. Loves to answer questions and help students with their struggles. Also explains instructions and requirements very clearly and thoroughly. Most importantly, he really sets a strong foundation for the next English course. Definitely not easy, but the work is very worthwhile.
His instruction is very clear and detailed and the materials are very helpful and interesting. In addition, he also provides sample essays to clarify what he expects and he also allows revision for first two essays. It's also easy to get full participate points and home work points. I enjoyed his class.
Mills is one of the best professors I had. He is very organized. At the beginning you get his course policy, very accurate semester calendar, and most of the materials you will need. He is also very supportive as he is always willing to help during class or in office hours. His classes are engaging and you truly learn a lot. Definitely take him!
Mills is a great professor! He is very kind and friendly, and is super understanding towards student athletes. Very clear throughout all of his lectures and makes sure you are on the same page before moving on. Knows how to take and dish out jokes during class, which makes lectures a little more bearable. TAKE HIS CLASS!! Definitely won't regret it
Mr. Mills is a fantastic teacher, I would highly recommend taking English with him. Everything we did in his class was very interesting.
If you ever get a chance to be in his class, you are so luck!He is the best instructor ever. He is very organize and willing to help his students. He gives a lot of good feedbacks, helps you to have a good essay! One of my weakness was writing but Mrs. Mills prove to me that its never late to be a good writer!if English is ur second language, take him
To be honest, I'm a lazy person. However, Richard is so amazing that I have to rate him here. He is the best. He is kind, smart and gives good feedback. He is nice, but it never means you can do nothing and get an A. It takes work to earn a good grade, and it definitely worth it. In a word, he is the best teacher ever.
One of the best english teachers I have ever had! He is extremely helpful and will help you with anything if you ask. His topics are interesting an he help you develop a lot of thought in class discussions. Make sure you participate!!
There are a lot of assignments including 6 essays! Not exactly easy grader, but if you follow his teachings closely, you should be able to get good grades. There are participation points that can be earned from participating and arrive to class punctually. He is very helpful and is willing to help you! His lectures are quite funny. Not bad overall.
Class is pretty easy. A LOT OF HOMEWORK AND ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. Everything is clearly explained, homework pretty much everyday, a few formal papers and two inclass exams. Mills is great in that he prepares you for everything, there's not jump out grading. He is really passionate about his students. I think there's too much HW but hes awesome.
By far the best experience I have had with a professor at Foothill. You can tell that he is passionate about everything he teaches, and he truly cares about his students. In class discussions are the best. He is a tough grader but he is always happy to help. He gives great feedback. I would take him a third time if I could.
Mills is by far one of the best english teachers I have had my whole education years. I had him for english 110 as well and moved along with him to 1A. He is very detailed with everything such as essay format, reading comprehension etc. He can be at times VERY talkative and boring at times. But nevertheless, a great teacher! he has truly helped me!
By far one of the best english teachers Ive ever had. Very fun class and is a very understanding person. Definitely suggest taking his class!
Mr. Mills is a great teacher, you can tell he loves his job and cares about his students. He creates a clear guideline of what is expected for each assignment. The only thing I would change is that there is a medium amount of homework every day. But other than that I strongly recommend taking a class with him.
He is really loves and cares about his students. It was my first english course in Foothill and I loved going to class! However, this does not mean that he is easy grader, he gives challengeable amount of homework and in terms of essay grading.
Richard is amazing! He expects a lot but it is all worth it because if you apply yourself you'll get a lot out of the class. He also explains very specifically and thoroughly what it is he needs from you.
He's a great professor! He prepares you in advanced on his essays and is really clear on what he expects on the essays. He also teaches you how to organize your essays properly, which was really helpful. He takes a great amount of time to prepare a wonderful feedback on your essay, which was really helpful.
He is a really good teacher and really tries to help you be a great writer. He is very organized and his work is not that bad if you put in effort. If you attend the class regularly and do all the work, you'll get a good grade!
Mr. Mills was an awesome teacher, and he's really nice. He's very clear about what to do to pass. If you go to class and ask him questions, it's an easy A.
He gives a lot of homework, but it will help you in your essay. Mainly focus on the essay structure rather than the content. As long as you follow the guidelines and put a decent amount of work, you are guaranteed to get an A.
Prof. Mills could be one of the best professor I have ever had. He makes sure all his students learn and improve. He has clear expectations and rules that are always enforced throughout the quarter. The discussions and lectures are very interesting. If you come to class with interest I guarantee you will have a good grade and become a better writer
If you choose to take his class, you have made a good decision. Personally I improved a lot. You have to work really hard if you are an ESL student in order to get an A (but it's worth it cause you do learn). He's very generous and helpful. Whenever you need help, he will always be there. Like seriously. He replies my email within 30s, no joke.
Richard is very charismatic, knowledgeable and eloquent. You will enjoy his lecture and learn a good amount as a writer. Super helpful and gives timely feedback. Made me a better writer. FYI he is also the prettiest English teacher at Foothill, and his voice is the killer.
Workload are too much. If you not planning on reading and writing journal, don't take him. He is definitely a tough grader and his office hours is always full of people cuz he graded low on those papers and students are all trying to figure out what to do to get better grade. You get to revise the essay and earn maxi 1 letter grade higher
Mr. Mills was the best English professor I have ever had in my whole life. He is very helpful and very clear with his expectations. Group discussions are also very helpful. He does give quite a bit of homework, but the homework he assigns can be helpful in writing your essay. As long as you follow the instructions on what he wants on the essay, you will get a good grade.
Amazing teacher. He's really nice and always gives you a chance to submit revisions.
There aren't enough good words to say about Professor Mills. His teaching method incorporates a heavy dose of class discussion with minimal lecture. He is, without a doubt, one of the best English professors at Foothill and I implore you to take a class with him. A lot of reading, but it was all interesting. Overall, amazing teacher.
Amazing personality! He is very polite and respects every student. I will definitely take his class again.
Richard mills is a good teacher, has clear grading criteria, and spoonfeeds you with step-by-step instruction for the essays. however, he is a tough grader, he gives daily work which is usually reading responses from lengthy (15+) page texts, and if you dislike reading (like me) this is the class you should stay away
This was a really good class! I learned a lot and really liked just being in class and the discussion.
He really respects students and passionates on his stuff. He is very clear on what he wants. Go to office hours twice before submitting a essay and then u will get the grade above B at least. He cares about students. His criteria is very clear so follow that. He never gives too much limitations on what you should write so it will be easier for us.
I definitely feel like I've grown as a critical thinker by taking his class. I don't always understand the way he grades. I turned in one paper I thought was great and got a B and then another I thought was terrible and got an A. He encourages class discussion and group interaction, and he assigns a lot of readings.
He gives out lots of readings and writings, however, he is caring, charismatic, well-organized. Amazing Lectures, His topics surround on poverty & homelessness. He puts his heart in teaching and treated every student well. I love him, and TARDINESS COUNTS INTO GRADES :) Never be Late!
A fine choice. There is a lot of reading and 2-3 major essays, but if you put in at least a little bit of effort you should be okay. You have to show up to class to get participation credit and there is a lot of group work, so make sure you sit by people you don't mind talking to. His class gets a little boring, but it's manageable.
Best teacher I have every take for English. I highly recommended taking his class. Super helpful and nice teacher. Only two major essays and two in class. You just need to be active and nice. Do your homework and you will be ok. Just take him if you can.
Mr Mills is the best. His class is more of a workshops with many group works and brainstorming ideas. He offers amazing insights on literature and he seems to be very passionate about English. He never judges people's answers and welcomes everyone to participate in class. He grades generously as long as you follow his grading criteria.
Make sure you do not be late for class or he will take off your participate points. His office hours are useless. I went to his office hours for every essay and he told me everything looked great but ended up giving me a C.
He's the best teacher I have had.
He's very passionate about the subject. All of his assignments have meaning, he doesn't give out busy work. He's available for help when you ask, and he sets up very clear and easy to understand ways to write your essays. He breaks things down that make it easier to tackle. Favorite college english teacher.
Nice and cool teacher! He goes through everything thoroughly and makes sure everyone knows how to do the assignments. His everyday assignments and class work help you with the essays you will be writing so coming to class matters A L O T.
Best English professor I have ever had. By far.
Professor Mills is a fantastic lecturer! It was a pleasure to be a part of his class. I am looking forward to taking English 1B with him in spring quarter! However, don't expect that the course is eas going. There are a lot of homework and four home essays. Be ready to work hard in order to get A. Good luck!
Great Professor. Gives good feedback, is fair, willing to help and is great at lectures.
I highly recommend Mr. Mills he is a great teacher, one of the best that teaches English.
His class was challenging but the workload is doable. He's a good lecturer and actually works with you when it comes to discussions and essays. Participation matters a lot but it's mostly group discussions, he's very open when it comes to hearing different opinions, so don't be scared to speak up.
He is so caring and has only almost no homework. He is also an easy grader. His class is the best choice for STEM and high unit majors.
Prof. Mills is a gem. He is so understanding, sweet, and gentle with his students. He fosters a safe & engaging learning environment and the discussions are centered around important & valuable topics. He really wants everyone to succeed and is so kind to every single person. Prof. Mills has been the best teacher I have had at Foothill so far.
Mills is definitely one of the better professors at Foothill. His lectures are very engaging and he seems to care about the subject a lot. My only problem is that he helps you too much. He will give away the meaning of the stories that you will read, spoiling the fun of analyzing them yourself. However, easy A for those who do not care.
Highly recommended. Really good class. Workload can be a lot but it's manageable.
Workload is kind of heavy, but hes a very nice prof. Willing to listen to the students, and always be there to help. Easy A if you work hard and get everything done. Unfortunately, this is his last quarter at fh.
Class consists mainly of reading articles, writing one-page journals, a couple reading from a book, and 3 big essays. Journals are graded more on completion but make sure to put some effort into the essays if you want a good grade in the class.
He is open minded and would like to listen to his students' opinions. He never judges. I would say he is a fair grader. It's not extremely easy to get an A, but it is easier than you would think to get an A if you put some effort on your work. You can learn a lot and get a good grade simultaneously in his class.
A+. Easy class.
Professor MILLS is a very conscientious professor and the atmosphere in his classroom is great. Students enjoy the process of thinking and expressing in class. I have to say that his grading standard is very strict. Secondly, he attaches great importance to the student attendance, late and truancy will seriously affect your grades!!
It was Prof. Mills' first online class due to COVID and I really enjoyed his efforts and help during the whole time. He is willing to help you out, just ask for help with an E-mail or even schedule a Zoom. He created some videos explaining what's coming up the following week, which I thought was very helpful and nice since there were no class zooms
Though most of the homework and assignments are not very heavily graded and merely on participation I believe he grades essays pretty hard. He gives good feedback but it is super hard to know what is expected for his essays. Peer reviews don't even help because they don't even help the essay.
cool guy rates super harsh though.
Prof Mills is a very good teacher who gave us great materials and strategies for essay writing. I enjoyed the topics and discussions and felt every assignment was relevant. If I could critique something it would be more detailed feedback besides the rubrick. Otherwise great class, great teacher!
He's the best professor I have ever taken for Eng. 1A! He provides so much information on what he's looking for in essays and is also super approachable if you need help on anything! Honestly, he is a bit of a tough grader but if you follow his criteria on essays, then you'll be fine! Also, get ready to read! A lot of assignments on reading!
Professor Mills is a great teacher. His class taught me to write an essay and research paper. Lots of homework but manageable to be honest. It was an online class due to Covid-19 but he gave us videos every week explaining the modules for the week and it was very helpful and detailed enough to understand what he was looking for in the assignments.
The homework is a little heavy, but its very easy to complete and you can get full credit by just filling the criteria. The class has three essays that are each 20% of your grade and the exams are both 5%. Very communicative and gives you lots of opportunities to succeed. Its an easy A if youre willing to put in the work.
Mr. Mills is a really good teacher and is very kind. Even though I haven't met him in person and I take an online class he gives really good feedback for my assignments. I also love he makes sure I get 100 percent in all assignments. If you are planning on taking an English course I suggest you take from Mr. Mills.
Prof. Mills is a fantastic teacher. I am taking him through an asynchronous online English class. He is highly accomodating and was able to work with me when I was struggling. There are a lot of weekly assignments, but they are beneficial for essays. The layout of the class is clear and easy to follow. I wish I could take him for English 1B!!
Great professor! I was lucky to learn from him! Lots of homework and discussions, he keeps you busy, but you learn a lot! He chooses very interesting topics, so readings are all captivating. Easy grader.
His class was a waste of my time, among other things.
Professor Mills is a very fair grader and provides you with exactly what he expects. Writing has never been my strength and I feel like he helped me improve my skills. Although at times it felt like a little too much if you put the effort in you should get a good grade
English was my least favorite subject, but after taking his class, I enjoyed reading and writing essays. He's an excellent teacher and will try to help you improve your reading and writing skills. Be prepared to read and write.
The worst prof I have ever taken in Foothill, VERY VERY VERY harsh grader. Wasn't respectful in office hours meeting and is not willing to help students instead of giving few advices.
Love this guy, amazing English professor to take if you're not shy.
Ok. The lectures get very boring. Be ready to talk to people around you EVERY class, so pick where you sit wisely on your first day! It felt very intense; deadlines are strict. Some say he's a tough grader, I'd say he's very far from that (if you follow the instructions). If you connect with him (share your ideas/thoughts), he'll be more lenient :)
Professor Mills is one of my favorite teachers at Foothill! He answers quickly and gives helpful feedback during office hours. I would always ask him to meet whenever I want to go over my drafts. Expect lots of reading and writing, but it's worth it for the skills you'll learn. I recommend his class to students who want to learn a lot :)
Learned a lot from him, he is clear and friendly. Always ready to help students.
I do not enjoy English classes, but Richard is incredible! The homework load is super reasonable and he's an easy grader! He's always willing to help and overall I loved his class 10/10 would recommend!!!
Good reading set, great lectures and wholesome reviews. I would definitely recommend this class
5 essays are a lot, but all the work you do relates to the essays needed for the class. Everything you do is actually needed and overall makes it really easy and clear what he expects. He cares a lot about the students. I once last minute changed my entire essay and he was completely fine and even encouraged me to go outside my comfort zone.
I basically didn't do anything for the first 6 weeks of class and he still accepted every assignment for full credit and his grading on essays is very fair and he makes multiple comments to help you understand where you could improve and where you did good. I really enjoyed getting praised for my writing, which I am not used to.
Grades easy as long as you try. Good feedback. Creative freedom. Class filled with insightful class discussions and lectures. Most essays completed outside class. 5 essays in all including midterm and final. Great teacher who encourages the sharing of ideas and opinions. Very comfortable class atmosphere. Participation points depend on attendance.
Reading and discussions every week. Assignments have due dates but if turned 1-2 days after, it's okay. Teaches us instead of just giving you a prompt and telling you to write. Gives a clear layout and examples for the essays. 3 essays, 1 essay for midterm, and essay for final "exam" can be the score of your midterm. Can revise essay 1 or 2.
The type of English teachers that gives out 100% on essays, just based on his rubrics. The topics are interesting, and he actually teaches you how to write. His class was hard to get for some reason, didn't even get waitlist for his two online1b classes on the first day to register.
I felt like I still learned something but the class was graded pretty easily. When discussing things in class Professor Mills was always caring and took notes on what you'd say and always have something positive to say and add to the conversation.
Professor Mills runs a tough but rewarding class. The workload is heavy, with 5 essays, but everything is relevant and helps you improve your writing skills. He's super helpful in office hours and always gives great feedback. I found Unstuck ai really useful for essay prep.
Mills is by far my favorite professor here at Foothill. He is so nice and easy to talk to if you have any questions. Be prepared to talk because there are group discussions every class. I didn't have a hard time completing assignments or essays as his directions were very clear.
Professor Mills is one of the most well-spoken, caring professors I have ever taken from. He is not passive aggressive like other English teachers I have and does not make you feel bad for participation. If you want not only an easy A, but also a class where you feel seen and heard, just take the class.
Took 1B Async. Super straight forward and easy class. 1-2 discussion posts a week, 1 journal every 2-3ish weeks, and 3 essays total. You do peer reviews on essays which was super helpful. Super forgiving and easy grader. I got A's on all my essays and I don't consider myself a good writer. I would definitely take him again!
Prof. Mills is kind and cares about his students—just go to class, participate, and communicate if you are behind or life is getting in the way and he gets it. Very good feedback on essays, easy homework, you get outlines for midterm and final—I actually read the book because it was interesting for once and not boring like my other english classes.
He seems too chill and I wasn't prepared for ENGL 1A from his ENGL 110 class!
