v. interesting lectures. Exams extremely difficult, even if you know your stuff-- "multiple multiple" choice questions.
HOLY CRAP! NEVER walked out of a test and didn't know if i got ANY Of the questions right.. I think the math question was the only one i was confident about (which doesn't happen too often) but loves what he does and come to class full of energy
Amazing prof! Posts his notes online after lectures, but these notes consist of the bare minimum and don't make that much sense on their own, so going to class is a good idea. Lectures themselves were quite entertaining at times.. he uses relevant, interesting examples and is hilarious in general! Tests are hard, but not as bad as everybody says.
Moses comes to class every day and gives you everything he has, he is excited about what he is teaching and does everything he can to get you excited and interested in it. I did't find that there was a dull moment in any of his classes. Go to class, take good notes, review the readings and you will do fine. His exams are not too bad either.(rumors)
Definitely the best prof I've had. He's so enthusiastic about everything and makes the information interesting; plus, he shows funny videos and gives word puzzles at the beginnning of class :) If you work hard and go to class, his tests really aren't that difficult.
Great prof. He is so enthusiatic....and funny. He has great notes and explains the concepts clearly.
Terrible
awsome
Wow, abolutely FANTASTIC professor! He's tough, but he makes you want to do well in his class. Write down what he says as well as his notes.
Best prof ever!!!!!!!
His tests are rediculously hard! Pay attention to when he talks really fast about things not in the notes because he tests that stuff! He tests more on knowledge of the concepts than definitions of the material. You really need a total understanding of the concepts he teaches to do well in his class.
So awesome. Exams aren't as hard as rumoured, though he does expect you to know your stuff. I liked this prof. The course was better than I'd expected :)
Very enthusiastic, interesting examples and videos, tests are difficult but if you work hard they're more than doable
A really good prof, had him on my first semester in university. He had difficult exams, but if you studied then you'll do well (I got an A-) He was very excited in his lectures, and class was never boring. Definetly recommended class.
his class is the BEST class out of all. Highly recommended although his questions are challenging but his lectures is pretty much amazing. Very passionate- just its a lil intimidating to ask for help .
extremely passionate about his material so pay attention in class cause that's where most questions come from. read text only as a side and not even that necessary. nice guy in person so don't be scared to approach and ask questions because he really likes that.
Very interesting. Tests really depend on how well you do with riddles and word puzzles. I studied quite hard and understood the material, but I got really confused on the test because of the way he worded his questions. They made me second guess myself. The written part was pretty easy though!
I kind of revised my opinion of this prof when I finally received my grade. I think I figured him out after a rather horrible midterm (don't be discouraged though, it is easy to bounce back). He was very obsessed with the text book, he got a lot of diagrams in his tests directly from it. Just memorize stuff, you'll be fine!
He is a really good prof. His class is the only one that I dont mind going to. Just study the material, and listen in class. DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS!!!!!!!! he loves it when ppl ask him questions
funny!!!!!!
Class is interesting
Pretty funny guy. You have the option of writing out the notes in this one, he doesn't go too fast. Sometimes gets a bit sidetracked(guiness?)
Very funny guy and will always try to help you understand. He has good notes but you will need to use the textbook for his figures and tables. His tests are HARD, you gotta be studying until you understand or else your gonna just not do well at all.
Dr. Moses is a good lecturer, and tries to make the course fun. Unfortunately it was his first time teaching this class, and as such the timing of the lectures over the term was terrible, and didn't have all his facts straight. Also, his tests were more specific than most of my fourth year courses!
Great prof with lots of energy. Never use a mic but i m pretty sure you can still hear him anywhere in a 300 people lecture room... Midterm was fairly easy if you've memorized everything. Final was insanely difficult... I ran out of time.
fun fun fun
amazing!!!!!!!! moses makes the material INTERESTING when i had no interest at all prior. He makes me want to switch my major to ecology/zoology!!
he was one of the best profs i have ever had.. funny, and always tried to keep the lecture interesting, even when going through boring material.
BLARG!!!
Makes the lectures fun and light, but doesn't match up with labs, which wouldn't matter except that lab TAs assume you know it already, so you're behind in that aspect. His tests are doable if you read the textbook alongside his notes, otherwise you're missing out.
Awsome lecture! He was funny and interesting and really loves what he teaches! Really makes you want to show up for class!
Moses is an amazing prof. YES his tests are very difficult, but even if the average is low and you get average, you still get around a B. He makes them hard to PREPARE you! Go to class, take notes, write down what are on his slides as well as what he says. I am above class av. and I read the text for clarification and figures only.
Wow, even if you absolutely HATED biology, you can't help but have some interest after you take a class wit this guy. Funny, enthusiastic.. this guy has it all. The only drawback would be the exams=tough. BUT still a very enjoyable class.
EXCELLENT:)
even if attendence is not necessary, his lectures are amazing. This course, by far, is the only one where I have not missed a single lecture. His exams are tough though.
An amazing prof who has memorable teaching stories! One of the greatest profs ever.
Great Professor. Makes class interesting. Very enthusiastic. Study hard tho.
Great prof :) He loves what he does which makes it better for students. Super friendly and enthusiastic. Exams are hard but if you study enough you should do pretty well.
I like his class very much!!! His classes are interesting and he is very helpful too. Although his exams are hard, the average was around 50% so don't be afraid to take his class. Also, remember to study the text as he follows text closely.
His enthusiasm is impossible to ignore, so its hard to drift away in class... this is a good thing! Exams were more challenging than they appear but still fair. His pre-organised lecture outlines were great, added to them in class and they were all I needed to study for the final. Genuine interest in helping students understand concepts.
AMAZING prof!! Has a genuine interest in what he teaches and loves to share it with his students!! Moses made me realize i want to focus on zoology and not genetics. Tests are hard and the average is low but its impossible to not learn in his class! DO THE ASSIGNED READINGS, there arent many so just DO THEMM DO THEM DO THEM!!
very Hard Tests
I only took this class because it's a prerequisite but Dr. Moses made it really interesting. He has a genuine enthusiasm that's very infectious and makes his classes fun. It's rare to get a professor that teaches with such passion! His exams are challenging but if you work hard and pay attention in classes, you will do well.
Awesome Prof, but his tests are unnecessarily hard, his lectures are REALLY good he makes a boring subject interesting and makes you want to attend lectures
Nice guy, very enthusiastic makes biology a lot more interesting and gives great examples. Loved the class but his tests were really hard.
I had him for the "Overview of Vert Diversity". Along with the lab, the absolute worst class i have taken at this Uni. He was a good lecturer but he mixed up the topics every day and gave notes afterwards so there was a lot of confusion when trying to re-write notes, even only a couple days after Outside of cl
Moses is one of the best teachers you can get at the UofA. He is entertaining, enthusiastic, and makes class actually enjoyable, even when your talking about the evolution of mammilian hearing! Be warned he has amazingly hard tests, average was usually around 50%!completely worth it to struggle through the test, becuase you actually learn something
Very interesting guy, notes and lectures are clear. Has lots of interesting little stories. Tests aren't really hard but the questions are worded in a very confusing manner. I thought I would hate this side of bio but he made it my favorite class by far. Outside of class he's pretty cold. Recommend overall.
Awesome prof but exams will crush you!! Multiple choice is insane but his long answers arent too bad. Do not buy the text book
Awesome professor! He has pretty hard tests, but they are very fair. He clearly loves his subject and is actually quite humorous while he lectures. One of my favorite profs in university, if not through all my schooling.
Moses is a great guy... He keeps the dry info interesting. The exams are multiple-multiple choice, which he makes extremely difficult. The examination is more based on your test-taking skills than your knowledge of the material. Would recommend, but only because Moses is extremely engaging and entertaining.
Best professor I have ever had. He teaches in a manner that keeps you interested, even the boring material. He is incredibly funny. I would recommend attending class because he explains a lot of terms in class but not in lecture notes. Set up so if you stufy hard, you WILL get a good mark.
Excellent prof! Great at keeping students' attention. Tests are difficult, but looking over the notes a few times will help a lot. Textbook not used at all, except for a few assigned readings. I enjoyed going to this class because of the prof.
Moses is an amazing prof. I don't know many people who didn't love him. He is so enthusiastic and really makes anything interesting. The tests can be difficult but if you study hard enough you will be fine. Awesome awesome prof. Hope I have him again!!!
Worst teacher ever. His tests were the equivalent of a prostate exam. Also i found his sense of humor repulsive. His jokes were about as funny as dressing up as hitler to a halloween party.
The comment before this describes him perfectly. Awful prof. He also has a lispse but it is not that bad. Only take his class if you want ur GPA to crash.
He has a great sense of humor and his classes are always fun but his tests are extremely hard. If you have him make sure to come to every class and pay attention to small details (like the articles he brings in) because material from in-class discussions will appear on exams.
he is bad...
Great teacher. Good sense of humour. Exams weren't bad, as long as you know your stuff. Used the textbook lots, so I actually got my money's worth, unlike other courses. I love how he handled students who were spiteful because he doesn't post practice exams. They're horrible ways to study.
Funny guy, he tells you on the first day what his exams are like. He has mandatory readings from the book. It's a lot of memorization, and you get out of it what you put in.
Sense of humor. Tons of examples of the concepts. Some of the material is boring and theres lots to memorize but he does his best to make it interesting and applicable. labs were complete bull for this course but you have to suffer through. Exams were very hard, lots of small details. if i had the choice i would not have taken this course.
moses is an awesome prof! great sense of humour & i never fall asleep in his class. he only provides a practice quiz throughout the term, but it's really similar to the actual quiz & the midterm; should do okay if you understand his style.
Spare yourself the added stress... The class itself has enough information to learn, his notes are extremely diffecult to use, I didn't think he was funny at all, his lectures are poorly structured... his exams are unnecessarily hard!! All in all terrible and frustrating experience... very disappointed all-in-all!!
Really enthusiastic. The class is definitely worth going to, he has so much energy it makes it interesting - well as interesting as plant life cycles can be. The subject itself is hard, you really have to understand things and work hard, but that's the subject not the Prof. Moses is fantastic!
He's a really great prof..very funny. Did amazing on labs, avg on seminar (both together half your mark), avg on quiz, then horrible on midterm and final. You really need to know your stuff and studying last minute even with going to every class is not gonna work. The material is hard. From what I've heard he's better than the alternative though.
He is hilarious. He always has this walrus when he is teaching. Never got a chance to ask him why. His exams are not that hard you just have to really understand what you are doing and not just memorize.
He's very enthusiastic, so it's easy to pay attention in lectures. He shows cool pictures and videos that can make even the boring units seem interesting. His exams are hard, but since the class is curved, it's still possible to get a good mark as long as you do well relative to other people.
Interesting lectures and examples, but the actual theory of the class was boring and his "funniness" actually made it less clear to understand as the focus shifted from the theory (testable) to examples (almost untestable). Extremely unhelpful outside of class or when discussing marks. I got an A+ but was very disappointed with the prof
Very very enthusiastic about the subject but too much time spent on examples and less on the actual curriculum. Does not at all match up with the lab. Horrible to write your lab exam and then learn everything that was on it the next day. I wouldn't reccommend this class or this professor.
Amazingly smart prof! Knows so much information and gets so excited about some topics that he talks a mile a minute! You have to write his notes out because there are so many diagrams to draw but he posts them afterwards to! Which is nice! Textbook is not really useful, exams are tricky! But fair! Take his class if you can but make sure you study!
Really enjoyed his lectures, but make sure you write fast! He really knows the material and gives interesting examples, but talks a mile a minute. Also, lecture and lab material generally don't coincide, make sure you read up on lab material before the test.
GREAT prof! I really liked going to class and he made it interesting with video clips and stories. I got an A- but I had to work extremely hard for it. The lab will make your life hell, but the class is phenomenal. Pay attention to to the big picture, how first day of lecture material relates to the last.
Very detailed class, don't even think of not knowing everything, exams are 100% written, specific questions. Term paper was tricky because I had never done a paper like this before, asked you to challenge conventional evidence on a topic like it was an everyday thing. Lab is like a second class on its own, all I can say is know the skulls by heart.
very good prof take his class
Excellent prof, but the test questions are unlike any you will ever do. Yes it challenges the traditional idea on some things but in some cases it becomes a case of how closly you can read over each question to catch the right answer, rather than actually proving you know the stuff.
Pretty good prof. Alot funnier than most, but has a difficult class. Make sure you keep up with the readings, and his MC tests are very difficult
very hard class and he didnt make it any easier.... his notes make no sense. even when you attend EVERY class things just dont make sense!! his MC basically tests your ability to detect misuse of a word...not your knowledge!! he goes his own way not at all with the labs or seminars!! make it very difficult when you find out info after your lab or a
Made boring material very interesting. Uses straight forward notes and is willing to help if you have intelligent questions.
Generally a good prof but HARD tests !! Notes are interesting but not organized.
The course in general is quite difficult for a first year course and he gives you tough tests, but he's a very good proff, knows his stuff and is hilarious. Really interesting and if you pay attention you really understand the material enough to do fine on the tests.
wow so hard
Loves to teach and is funny in class, however his tests are hard!!!! Not because he tests on whay you learned in class but because he brings in useless side details to trick you.....
Great prof, would recommend to anyone
Funny prof and obviously loves what he does. His mc questions are difficult and the class midterm average was low. Fun lecture though.
Not a bad prof. Really knows his stuff. Interested in bio, which helps you be interested. Funny person. Interesting course. However, refuses to give out practice problems or exams, and the tests are therefore very hard. But the average is low and its graded on the curve so its fine.
Funny, interesting, enthusiastic and very helpful. EXAMS ARE HORRIBLE! Famous for his "multiple multiple choice".. meaning answers from A to G but all very similar. Tries to trick you on exams but average is extremely low so the curve will hopefully save you! Attend class as completed notes are missing tons of info!
It was apparent that Dr. Moses truly has a passion for Biology. Fun lectures, kind of impersonal during office hours. Tests were awful. Study the material and ride the curve!
Hes got the right idea and would rather you not memorize and learn the big picture and the why's to things, however we are all not botanists and to get the full understanding he wants with somethings takes alot of reading from the textbook, which you must do, go over the simple facts in class but to do well do all of the textbook readings
Awesome prof, but very hard tests! Mandatory lectures, if you miss one you are screwed, and have to get the notes from a neighbour.
Very funny, good prof!! Yeah his tests are hard, but stop complaining you whiners thats what the curve is for! Study your notes obsessively, they are suuuuuper important and print them off the class site, don't copy them down in class because the online version are more complete! Use your textbook too, skim over the pages marked in the syllabus
Lamest prof ever, hard to sit in those lectures. Mandatory attendance. His notes don't make sense, but that's all he tests from. The exams are INCOMPREHENSIBLE. There is more or less no right MC answer so it's complete chance. Take comfort that everyone feels the same and will bomb at least as hard as you. Ride the curve on this one!
Great lecturer... hard quiz and midterm. Easy final. Take him over the other 108 profs!
Fantastic lectures! He really keeps things interesting. You have to go to class and take down notes, thats where all his exam questions come from, but it's worth it, you'll remember the lectues even when you're studying 3 months later. You rarely need the text aside form diagrams (except for a few assigned readings- do those) Exams are hard though!
If there is another prof available, I would recommend not taking his class. Although he does make lectures very interesting, his test are ridiculous. His tests are about finding the hidden trick in his question, not about how well you know the material. He is very specific and you basically have to be inside his head to do well.
He's a great prof- made a really boring course interesting and bearable. However, his exams were a bugger- I wanted to cry halfway through the final. He doesn't test for obscure, difficult material, but his questions were really tricky.
Bio108 is a boring course in general (botany), but moses is a comedian so that helps. For some reason, the class averages are always in the 50s so 80+ is roughly an A, which isn't too hard. He is very clear in his lectures. But make sure you know the examples that he gives in class, because they're not in his notes nor in the textbook!
He really loves what hes doing and its very obvious, which makes the boring material more enjoyable. Hes very knowledgable and helpful but his tests are really hard so dont expect an easy mark. He really makes you work for it. Funny, good examples, and extremely friendly, but no practice material. Offers Pre-notes but I found handwriting better
Excellent prof, funny, made the material interesting and easy to understand. Exams were tricky but whatever youre on a curve anyways. Also they actually rewarded you for understanding the material, rather than merely memorizing a bunch of flashcards.
the best professor i think i've ever had. i went into the class dreading ecology, but it became one of my favourite classes, and i started to talk incessantly about plants, and fungi, and stuff. you have to study a lot though, and you can't just memorize. moses stresses that you have to THINK , so he writes his exams such that you have to use logic
Moses is one of my favourite profs. He tries to make everything really interesting and has so many clever quips ready for his lectures! There is a lot of information in this class, and he does expect a lot from his students. However, I didn't find his exams that unfair or difficult.
Excellent and entertaining prof! One quiz, a midterm, and a final. Quiz and midterm are both MC and are fairly easy as long as you study off his lecture notes. Final is a bit harder with short answers but it's not too hard as long as you've read his lecture notes a couple of times and thoroughly absorbed the information.
WORST PROF AT THE UNIVERSITY STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!
Terrible prof!! Test are very tricky and are set up for failure. Lectures drag on he gives too many examples.
Wicked Prof. You can tell the first years (See comments below) have a hard time with him. That's because you actually have to work to get a good grade. Otherwise, you couldn't hope for a more enthusiastic, helpful prof. I highly recommend him even if you don't have a future in biol/zool.
He's extremely enthusiastic about what he teaches. Explains concepts well and he's even better during office hours. His exams are pretty rough though. Mostly application questions. He's definitely one of the best/hardest profs for first years.
I used to love biology before i started to attend his class, I have 5 other courses and Bio is the only course which is making me cruse my existence... His exams will make you so frustrated thats not even funny. STay away from him if you love Biology.
You can tell he LOVES teaching the course, he shows great videos and adds interesting content. HOWEVER, his exam averages are usually below 50%, thankfully, the class is curved. You have to memorize EVERYTHING he says in class and make sure you UNDERSTAND it. This course took as much effort as the rest of my courses combined.
Really great prof. The exams are pretty hard if you haven't memorized all the words. Richard is really funny and classes are enjoyable.
Words cannot describe. He's an amazing prof who really loves Bio and is just a good all round person, he's a prof who is still a human being, who actually understands people. Definitly recommend him to anybody. He's also hilarious and keeps class interesting by breaking class time up with some videos. If you work hard enough his difficulty is fair.
Incredibly nice guy, clearly adores both biology and teaching it. His tests are killer, you must know absolutely everything - memorize his notes and the textbook. Knows the material and seems willing to help students outside of class, approachable. His notes are good but they're very easy compared to the difficulty of his exams. A+ explainer, fun.
He is an excellent lecturer, and knows how to make class interesting and relatively fun. His tests are very difficult, and the questions are very specific and tricky. My conclusion is that BIO 108 is a weed-out class for first year students. If you work hard and learn the stuff, you'll do well. It is on a curve after all.
Moses is a great prof. He really loves what he teaches. while his tests are really tough they are fair if you know the material. Overall he is a great prof, but if you can try to avoid taking ZOOL 224.
His tests are super hard, but he is an amazing prof. He knows his material very well, and can clarify anything if need be. Attendance is a must to do well, but it's not hard to show up since he makes class fun, almost always cracking some sort of joke. I highly recommend him.
He missed about 3 lectures this term by coming late to class everyday and wasted time babbling on about something not important. Although he was quite funny, you gotta seriously hit the books everyday in his class. The tests were awful and were clearly made for tricksters.
Really funny proff but his exams are really hard!!
He has the hardest exams on earth. His teaching notes are quite useless and hard to understand and hard to follow too. The text book helps a lot, so try making notes from the textbook instead.
Dr. Moses knows his stuff. I thought evolution would be the worst, but he actually made the material interesting and engaging. Midterm was alright, and final is fine as long as you follow his notes. However, if you are a slacker though I do not recommend taking Bio 108 with him because you will get destroyed.
His notes are not enough to go by. On my final written section he asked what was one interesting thing we learned in class... i know right. Allother questions are a) blah b)blahh c)a but only b sometimes d) all of the above e)none of the above. SO CONFUSING. Lifecycles are crucial to understand because of the large emphasis on the last few chapters
AVOID!One of the WORST profs I have ever had! Not only are his exams hard but you can put down answers that are DIRECTLY from his notes and he will proceed to mark it wrong and tell you that "you can't take his notes seriously" and "he might not always give you the correct information". If you value your sanity DO NOT take a course with this prof!
never taking his class again. his lectures are interesting and he's fun, but his tests are hard and unfair. lecture notes are useless as is the textbook. he tests on specific examples from his lectures but leaves most of it out of the notes he puts online. if you're taking his class you must attend lectures and take very detailed notes.
Study VERY hard for his class!!! He makes the hardest exams ever!! His multiple choice are SOOO trickyy!! He really knows his stuff tho and he makes the class interesting cuz of his cool personality and humor. But there's also a lot of content in this course so study everyday and dont fall behind! Read ur textbook and his notes and STUDY STUDY!!!!
Very nice guy, always willing to chat but he has tricky multiple choice questions. He explains concepts clearly if you go to class.
An absolutely gifted lecturer.....probably more useful for seminars. Bio 108 is not rocket science. If the class average is in the 50s...he should probably look at that in himself instead of assuming that he had a stupid class.
He is the only one who regularly teaches this course so very hard to avoid. I needed to take zool 224 but will take it elsewhere. This guy is beyond rude. Good lecturer but his personality is at the very margins of abysmal.
Great prof. Tests can be difficult, just read and actually think about the questions and you'll do fine. Dr. Moses is energetic and passionate about biology. I guarantee you'll receive a second-to-none education with him.
Dr. Moses is a very talented lecturer. Biol 108 is SUCH dry material, phylogenies, plant life cycles, etc. but somehow Dr. Moses made it bearable, and even at times interesting! He has great notes, and when supplemented with the text are very comprehensive. BUT DON'T BE FOOLED, YOU MUST STUDYSTUDY! Paid off on the final for me. Ended with an A!:)
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. EXAMS RIDICULOUSLY HARD! YOU WILL REGRET TAKING IT!
Awsome lectures. He makes it all really interesting. He tests are ful of trick questions though. They're more like reading comprehension. It's a great lecture to have but the tests suck. I'm glad I was in this class despite the hard tests though.
He's an awful prof. His tests are reading comprehension. His lectures are pointless, he wastes at least 20 minutes each class on old material, rambles constantly, and tries to be funny to win over students without teaching. His idea of help isn't helpful. Assigned half the class as a reading assignment. Just bad.
Only good thing about his lectures are the songs he plays before starting. Otherwise teach yourself with the textbook.
You can tell he's very passionate about Biology but his tests are extremely hard. It was the first time I failed an exam and I'm an honors student and Valedictorian candidate. Actually read his questions on his exams and think. STUDY LIKE CRAZY. Sometimes his notes lack structure and I'm often confused about the meaning when rereading at home.
Awesome Prof ! ! ! The best prof one could ever have . . His lectures are interesting and Notes are crystal clear. Just make sure you attend every lecture & pay attention. Multiple choice exams are a bit tough because it makes you think a lot. He maintains and awesome atmosphere within the class through out the semester.
I'd avoid this class generally, hated it with a passion. But you can tell Mosses is really passionate about it. I did not like his notes at all. They were too summarized. I ended up making my own notes in the end but was not worth it cuz his exams are SOOOO HARD!..I am never gonna take a class with him..the tests are ridiculous
Awesome lecturer, by far the best i've ever had. Makes going to class very enjoyable. Really tough tests, but definitely manageable with a little textbook reading and class attendance. I would definitely recommend Moses. Great notes.
Super passionate about his class which makes him super interesting. My favorite prof so far. His notes make perfect sense if you go to class, but are gibberish if you don't. His tests are a little on the harder side, but if you paid attention in class then they should be no problem because his explanations of concepts are perfect. Outstanding prof!
Great teacher. One of the best I've had. His lectures keep you interested in the class. He posts post-lecture notes online, which do not cover everything he went over, so attendance and note taking is necessary. You don't need the textbook much except for the diagrams he uses. His exams are fair- be sure to review life cycle diagrams for the final.
Fair. But completely useless and arrogant - don't go to him with questions, he'll brush them aside and can't admit it if he doesn't know an answer. It is one thing when student who did poorly doesn't like a prof. I got an A+ and I wouldn't recommend him to ANYONE. Memorize the notes, read the questions (tricky wording!), written is easy.
It's obvious that Dr. Moses is passionate about what he teaches and he definitely keeps the classes interesting. However, his exams are some of the hardest and he would tell you the same. His exams and midterms have incredibly low averages. His classes are curved though and the seminars and labs can save your grade.
Outstanding professor. Very knowledgeable, very enthusiastic. Exams are very hard, which sorts the wheat from the chaff. Study your butt off.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! He's a tricky prof although he is passionate about what he's teaching, the notes are all over the place, and his exams are EXTREMELY difficult.
Great prof when it comes to being interesting. He's a blast to listen to in the lectures and is very passionate about what he does. His exams are EXTREMELY difficult, however and i didn't find that his lectures quite prepared me for them. If you happen to be in his class, STUDY YOUR ASS OFF
tests suck, funny guy but notes and exams are brutal
Very passionate about biology. His exams are super hard and he has very confusing material on them. He aims for a low class average which isnt a bad thing if you get a decent mark. His notes are very sporatic and useless camparing them w other profs. Stay away unless hes your last resort. Or make sure you get notes from other students
Tries to be humous in class, calls on students for answers lots. His lectures contain a lot of fluff though. His lecture notes aren't very clear either. Very passionate about what he teaches, even if he doesn't teach it as well.
AVOID THIS PROF. Rambles on about meaningless examples. Did not finish all the material on time and made students responsible for the material not covered in lecture. Exams are unnecessarily difficult basically testing reading comprehension. Notes are unorganized and confusing
One of the best profs I've had! He's very funny, interesting, and enthusiastic. His exams aren't overly difficult if you commit enough time to going over the notes he goes over in class; the online lecture notes might not make as much sense without strong attendance. Definitely recommend. =]
Sweet guy, but study your ass off if you want marks Anywhere similar to high school! Much harder than most other uni courses. However, not too much different than highschool bio, you just need to memorize another half a textbook. Come to labs prepared though, you have to work your ass off in them to get much out of it. No joke 96% on diploma= B-/B
He was my favorite prof during the 1st year especially with BIO 108.. but the same cannot be said with Zoology 224.. He was too slow from the beginning, and spent time watching videos about fish and amphibians for months, and rushed the entire class of mammals in 2 days.. Super passionate about the subject, but not good enough. hard final exam :(
Moses was thoroughly entertaining in class and tried to make the subject matter interesting. He's very passionate about what he teaches. Tests are difficult but if you read carefully, attend class and supplement his online notes you should be fine.
I ALWAYS LOOKED FORWARD TO THIS CLASS. MOSES WAS VERY ENTERTAINING AND MANAGED TO MAKE THE MOST BORING CONTENT INTERESTING. HIS TESTS ARE DIFFICULT AND ARE NOT JUST SIMPLY MEMORIZING INFORMATION BUT APPLYING YOUR KNOWLEDGE. UNFORTUNATELY HE DIDNT FINISH THE CURRICULUM SO WE HAD LIKE 3 CLASSES ON ANIMALS :s
Moses was one of the most interesting people i have ever met. His class however was not the same. His notes are extremely simplified, the class was always behind the other classes.READ THE TEXTBOOK IT IS BETTER THAN ATTENDING CLASS. HIS EXAMS ARE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, HE DOESNT TEST BIOLOGY HE TESTS U PSYCHOLOGICALLY
Great professor. Very entertaining and makes the course interesting. Material is difficult, but with some some effort it is not hard to get an A. One of the best courses I have ever taken.
Moses is an awesome prof. however his tests are extremely difficult. He narrows multiple choice down to two very close answers where it comes down to how precise you know the material.
I'm transferring to arts but I absolutely loved his class! It gave me a whole new perspective on biology. Lots of people say that Moses is difficult, but you can definitely manage if you attend lectures and study before exams. His multiple-multiple tests are challenging, but answers are obvious as long as you know your stuff. Had an A+ with him!
I do not understand why Moses doesn't have an overall rating of 5.0. He is an AMAZING prof, utterly hilarious and interesting. Yes, his tests are hard, but its university...just study a lot and read the questions carefully and you will be fine. I always looked forward to his class, and I still find I talk about him probably once or twice a week!
Best prof ever! I had him in biol 108 and hated his exams, but still loved him afterwards that I took zool 224 which was even better. His exams are tricky, but if you study and attend class you'll manage. He is a hilarious man and tries to help his students to understand confusing concepts. I miss having his class already!
An amazing lecturer, but killer exams. If you study hard and understand the big picture you'll be fine, but his MC questions are ridiculous. I got 95% on the written and 52% on the MC on the final, if that gives any perspective. Be ready to work hard and hope you're good with random luck for guessing MC answers.
Zool 224 was a labor from start to finish.. lots of memory work. The exams are fine if you are good at multiple choice (you will find that most people are not). Moses is an interesting lecturer and I was happy with my grade but I will not be going back for more.
Moses is a very entertaining prof and knows his stuff. I absolutely loved this class. However, you need to know EVERYTHING he has ever mentioned in class. His exams are extremely tricky, but if you study hard you'll do well. People complain about his exams because they're lazy, but if you study you'll beat them anyways!
Quizes and exams were alittle tricky. And there is alot of work associated with the course
Moses was entertaining in class, pretty funny, but he is easily distracted and goes off on tangents that waste a lot of class time. We got pretty behind because of his getting distracted and ended up cramming a lot of content into the last few lectures. Exams were pretty fair but not really easy.
Moses is awesome. You'll be a bit behind the other classes in terms of material, but it's worth it. And he doesn't hold you responsible for what he doesn't get to, anyways. Super interesting lecturer, and really passionate about the material. His exams are great because they actually make you think about the material. OVERALL AWESOME PROF.
Biol 108 is a very dry course, Moses makes it worse. Honestly, he's an okay lecturer and most of what he says is on the exam and it helps when you're writing notes. His MC are extremely difficult and confusing, but his written on the final was really easy. If you have another choice for a bio prof, take it.
Not the most interesting class in the world, but Moses makes up for it. The man is entertaining...He is passionate about the subject, but his exams are HARD. Just try to understand rather than memorize the material because honestly.. it's the only way to do well in his course.
Dr Moses made Northern Ecology so much fun & enjoyable. I was surprised at the way he explained concepts so well in Bio 366. His explanations are so good that the lack of a lab components wasn't even felt. Attending class is mandatory. He's a really nice guy too and is very helpful. His exams are fair and straightforward. Moses is one of a kind
Moses is so amazing. His classes are fun and exciting, and he really wants you to learn the stuff. The material was quite dull at times, but he definitely made up for it a lot. I tried really hard to attend every single one of his classes. Great prof.
Terrible prof! His tests are so picky and try and trick your reading skills. He is enthusiastic about biology but is disorganized and sometimes hard to follow
Worst prof ever. AVOID IF POSSIBLE. He's such a terrible lecturer, the textbook teaches you everything without the headaches he gives you due to him screaming. All he does is ramble. His notes are completely useless and it almost ruined Biology for me. His tests don't test knowledge, they test your sanity.
I don't know why he has such horrible reviews but he's hands down one of my fav profs! His lectures are the only ones I look forward to and his passion gets to you so biology actually becomes exciting! I would highly recommend him. He's also hilarious and keeps students laughing. Pay attention during lectures and you won't have to study much either
Avoid if possible! Biology was my favorite subject until this class. He is very interesting in class although all his notes are useless and unless you practically memorize the textbook you are not going to do well at all.
AWFUL PROF extremely difficult exams. You need to practically know the material inside and out. Did not seem as a 100 level course, seriously don't even consider Richard Moses. His exam questions are tricky and you need to use critical analysis to answer his questions. He's not very helpful either. you ask him a question, he tells you to ask a TA
TRY TO AVOID. Moses is kinda all over the place when it comes to his notes, even though they're clear. Like he constantly jumps to examples within a section of notes and it really throws you off. He drags on the plant units for WAY TO LONG like a month or more, and his exams are really confusing and oddly worded just to mess with you.
I personally enjoyed his lectures. He demands constant attention in his class. If you miss one part then the rest becomes confusing. Bio 108 is mainly about concepts which he explained pretty well. His tests are hard, but if you study you should be fine. I recommend you go to the lectures because they're entertaining and informative.
Exams are extremely difficult, but lectures are not that bad. Stay away from him if you in first year as I am.....
Funny guy and does his best to keep you entertained in the class, but lacks clarity in explaining topics and notes are all over the place. Not recommended if you do well in biology because you're good at memorizing.
This was my 4th class with Dr. Moses and he was enthusiastic and super passionate like always. I like how he explains concepts, and his notes are clear and helpful. I just don't like how he's got to say some negative thing about every other persons work. His midterm was super long and no one finished it. but final was fair and square. Great Guy!
Very enthusiastic and loves this material! But also rather rude and unhelpful when you ask questions. Doesn't finish the course, keeps you late every class, and completely uncoordinated with labs. Exams are very hard!! Do not take!!
The exams in his class are extremely difficult. Memorizing the life cycles is a necessity to do well on the exams. He is a pretty decent lecturer, admits that the life cycles are boring and then test them excessively. Sometimes time could be used more effectively in class, and more synchronized with the lab material.
He was my favorite prof this semester. Enthusiastic and hilarious! Loved his jokes. But he needs to learn how to use classtime effectively; he really rushed at the end. Exams are quite hard but if you know your stuff well it won't be impossible. Do the assigned readings and questions, they will help you understand the material well.
Considering how boring phylogenies and life cycles/evolution are, he did a good job making them seem pretty interesting. The final was much harder than the midterm (which was really easy by the way), but only because the course's second half is ALL boring memorization. Still a good prof, just study!
First half of the semester is easy and fun (Moses is hilarious), but in the second half you will have to memorize LOTS of life cycles and dates. There is no easy way around it, just do it. He only tests what he talks about in class but if you read your text it'll help you to better understand the material, and a deeper understanding is expected.
Very enthusiastic prof and makes a dry subject somewhat interesting with his energy. The midterm was fairly straight forward but his final exam was ridiculous. Go to lectures and pay attention and you'll do fine.
i was captivated by his interest and care for his students and the subject matter. great guy! difficult midterm, very difficult final. do all readings and even more combined with attending class. curve was the only thing that protected my grade
Moses made a rather dry course interesting with his sense of humor and enthusiastic, comments (he thinks everything is incredible), but the quiz was very hard, and the midterm was difficult but easier than the quiz, the final was by far the easiest test in the course. If you do well in lab and the seminar it boosts your mark
His class is fun and the concept he taught is quite clear.Office hour is quite helpful although sometimes you may not get the answer you want. The multiple choices are little tricky but you will still do it well if you go over his slides and figures in the textbook.
Fantastic guy just wish his exams were easier. Absolutely vicious midterm and final, if it wasn't for the curve who knows what may have happened.
He's very passionate about the subject, but the class is very boring and he's honestly kind of annoying. He spends too much time on cladograms and plants. At leasts his exams aren't very hard.
Not an easy class, good lecturer but his exams are difficult, they test no knowledge but on sanity
Love this guy! He's so passionate and really makes you want to learn about what he's teaching. His tests are quite hard though, my advice go to class and really absorb his examples and how he words things, it'll help around test time.
GO TO CLASS. Whoever said this man tests you on your sanity, is right! His exams are structured to test you on how well you perform under pressure, I swear! He is a FANTASTIC lecturer, but his exams are a nightmare. Try not to miss any classes because although he posts all his notes, they can be difficult to follow if you haven;t attended.
He is a interesting guy and has fun lectures. However, the content is hard and lots of memorization. His tests are hard! Like really hard. But the good news is everyone does bad on them, so the curve gives you a B if you do okay in lab.
This guy is ridiculous. Biology is my best subject--and somehow, going into his exams knowing everything, I go out with a 59%. I've had him before but apparently he was taking it easy on the first years, because now in zoo224 it's amazingly harder. I'll never have this professor again, my gpa's going to be horrible this year solely because of him.
The material he teaches is interesting and taught well but his marking is very hard. Be careful what you say and what you write. Don't rely on him to be respectful to students.
Moses is a tough prof. The course has a lot of material to memorize, and he asks about the minor details that are easy to overlook. The slides posted online are also super hard to follow and often are just lists of traits that you have to know. As a lecturer, he's awesome though, but I don't think it's worth it. Lab is really interesting and fun.
Rich is a fantastic prof! The material is interesting by itself but he makes class even more entertaining. Really funny guy. His notes are great if you miss class and he's willing to help you understand missed concepts. Tests are fair if you study hard, but they're long so beware of time. Lab marks consist of 3 lab reports which is lots of work!
Go to class for sure. He's rather arrogant and his tests are manageable but you really need to know your stuff. His wording is poor, often asking things in a roundabout way. Not very approachable, yet he seems passionate about the subject. I'm sure that there are better professors for this class than Moses. So much memorization!!
Had him for 108 (which I thought went alright) and took him for 224. do not recommend for ZOOL224, tests are ridiculously hard and detailed.
He is obsessed about this course to a point where he doesn't give you any practice questions for the midterm nor the final. He believes understanding biology is way more important than practice questions regarding the biology curriculum. Overall I would never take any biology course at any point of my life with him.
Great prof/person and explains concepts very well. Only bad thing were his brutal tests and the way he rushed the last 2 topics to finish the course. The final was absolutely vicious. Probably the most awful exam I've ever wrote in my life and I studied very hard for it.
His exams are absolutely brutal. You need to know your stuff inside out and be able to work quickly. The course requires a lot of memorization, so be ready to study hard throughout the term if you want a good grade. He's really passionate about the subject and makes the material a lot more interesting than it should be.
Richard Moses did a much better job than my Bio107 prof. Need to attend for iclicker 5% marks but he does a great job. Course is relatively straight forward but the lab work is worth 40%--too much IMHO. To get an A or A+- read the text and prof notes
Moses was a great prof. I enjoyed the lectures and his quiz, midterm and final were challenging but fair. Would recommend, but put your phone away during class or he'll get you!
Make's something that should be extremely boring somewhat interesting. Overall enjoyed having this prof and would fix my schedule to have him again.
Study for his tests! I cannot stress this enough. His exams are absolutely brutal, but despite this, he is a very passionate professor and makes a lot of the material fascinating. His ability to project this interest is something that made him a very good professor. Definitely a funny guy that made lectures entertaining.
His lectures were interesting and he got so excited about the topics it was easy to pay attention to. Study for his tests though they can be hard!
great prof, love him, only class i manage to not skip any and the lecture stuck to your head hard
Has tough tests and expects students to know a lot. however he is a great lecturer and always there when you have questions. kept class fun and entertaining
Dr. Moses is an amazing lecturer but his tests are absolutely ridiculous. Honestly don't put too much time into studying because you're gonna do poorly regardless. He marks super hard & doesn't give much feedback at all. He's also kind of rude and often says that if you're not doing well in his class you should reevaluate your career choice.
Moses is a good lecturer, and tried to keep it interesting. However, his exams are killer, and tests you on one word that is found in his slides he posts. The slides are fairly detailed, but be prepared to apply your knowledge of everything inside and out.
Moses has been one of my favourite professors at the U of A so far, I love his classes. However, this was the first class of his I've taken with tests that were not multiple choice, hardest marker ever. But he took an interest in coming to our labs, and even brought our midterms after lab and sat down and went through them with each student.
Dr. Moses was such an interesting professor. He was obviously very enthusiastic about his subject. His exams were tough, mainly because they were very detailed.
I've had Moses for Biol 108, Zool 224 and Zool 371. He's a great prof and his lectures are awesome. Really the only lectures I could sit for 80 minutes and not get distracted. He is passionate about what he teaches and makes it very interesting. His tests are tough but if you study and go to lecture you'll pass.
Moses is the worst professor i've ever had. And it's not even close. You could know all the concepts at an A+ level, but on the exam he'll bring out an example he spoke of once, wasn't in the notes, is completely random, and then ask you if this is an example of the concept. Unless you want to contemplate working on the rigs, drop his class ASAP.
He's enthusiastic and entertaining. However, his slides aren't sufficient to study and you need to memorize a lot. His tests are difficult and you have a short time to answer them.
He is a great lecturer! He makes dry material interesting and entertaining. He posts notes on eclass that follow his powerpoints, which are super helpful when studying. His tests are pretty tricky, sorta wordy that try and confuse you.
Worst prof i've ever had. Midterm was vicious, and we have three lectures left before the final with a month and half of material to cover. We seriously are currently doing what the other lecture was doing just after reading week. All we can hope for at this point is that we are writing a different final from the other lectures.
Loves Biology 108 so much that he assumes the students know as much as he does. Don't study for his tests, because the probability of you getting 25% is the same whether you study or blindly guess the entire exam. If you get 100% on everything in the lab you should get a B. Always says the textbook is wrong, but then tests on it, which is confusing
With Moses, the class might as well be called Plant Life Cycles 108. He is so weirdly infatuated with this, that he ignored all other parts of the course material, and we ended up cramming in just 2 lectures on animals the last week. Be ready to memorize fantastic amounts of irrelevant material to the course because he personally likes it.
Man, this guy is twisted. Made an easy course incredibly infuriating with his disorganization and emphasis on the absolute worst topics. If you are reading this in effort to see if he's good for your schedule next year I have some advice for you: Stop reading this. Drop the class. Be thankful that you were warned.
The tests were very difficult. A lot of memorization; the slides are too general and the textbook offers a lot he supposedly doesn't test. He made a few errors on the exams which was annoying, and you get a very short time to write the very tough exams. He is also intimidating to approach and not very open to opinions in classroom involvement.
Honestly, Moses is clearly passionate about what he teachers but the way he expects students to be on his level of knowledge is ridiculous. He tests on extremely specific details and crammed about 78 lectures into 2 lectures. Seriously, this class is hard so be ready for a lot of memorizing.
Dr. Moses is an amazing professor. He is hilarious and gives engaging and interesting lectures. The quiz and midterm were okay, but the final was brutal. Work hard in lab to cushion your mark, and do the assigned readings and questions.
Dr. Moses is an incredible, funny lecturer, but the tests were extremely difficult. I wouldn't take another class from him for that reason - VERY difficult exams. Very little human biology, mostly plant related, which I found boring as well. To get an A would probably require an extreme amount of studying and memorization.
Really enjoyed him as a professor. Tests were hard, but if you knew your stuff you could do well. The labs were straight memorization.
Attendance is mandatory as he didn't use a text, midterms ask very specific detail for MC portion and written response. Also he marked the assigned essay very hard. Not an easy A. That being said Moses was a very good prof, lectures are easy to follow, he tries to chat and joke with his students. Very helpful and approachable.
Do not take Zool 371. Here's why. Tests are marked ridiculously. If you get the majority of the question right but miss a minor word or something, you'll get 0.5/3 when the larger portion of your response was correct. All long answer. Lab is a waste of time - doing experiments that are so inconsistent - papers are a total pain and a waste of time.
Moses is an incredibly inspiring prof. His tests are hard, but because the average is low it's not hard to do well as long as you put effort in. Easily the best lecturer at U of A. Great guy.
Avoid at all costs. He is passionate and a good lecturer but his tests are horrible and its obvious he doesn't care about your success or stress levels. Labs are atrocious and the sheer amount of expectations for assignments and studying is ridiculous. Keep your sanity and choose a different prof and, if you can, a different course.
Hardest class ever, but very interesting. Must put in the work to succeed. Moses was a phenomenal lecturer and is so passionate about this field. However, his exams are ridiculously hard. You have to memorize every little detail from the course in order to answer the tricky questions. But if you have an easy course load, would recommend!
He was passionate about teaching however the class was ridiculous. Way way too much to memorize and the information was very difficult and not interesting. Labs were 100% memorization. Definitely the worst course i have ever taken at the UofA. The lab prof was super good though and the labs were pretty cool, just hated the memorization and tests.
Pretty easy class and super interesting! You get to watch cool videos of animals so that's always fun. Rich was gone most of the semester but the course was really high quality. Go to class, take notes, listen, and look stuff up in the textbook if you need to. Labs were also fun and had a lot of room for freedom in designing experiments.
very good speaker, yet EXTREMELY tough questions. For example: Is it possible that maybe of the allopatric species are ALWAYS able to to or geographic speciation since speciation that occurs when biological populations of the same species become vicariant, or isolated from each other to an extent that prevents or interference? lol wouldnt tske
Really loves the stuff he's talking about, and gets super excited teaching it in his lectures. Definitely one of the best profs I've had so far, if you have an interest in biology, you'll love him, he uses a lot of really cool real life examples to solidify what he's saying. His tests are pretty hard but not impossible if you study hard.
He's actually pretty funny and makes the class enjoyable. His tests are difficult though, even though the first quiz was easy.
By far my favourite prof so far. Very passionate and funny, makes lectures enjoyable and go by quickly. Great notes. Quiz and midterm are multiple choice/true false, final has some short answer. Only thing you have to look for on tests is trick questions, read over answers carefully for wording.
Dr. Moses is like a kid in a candy store when teaching bio. His passion for science is infectious and inspiring. He strives to help students think critically and logically about life, but this leads him to give out lots of trick questions that confuse more than anything. His tests weren't easy but it's so enjoyable to listen to him teach.
Hard exams!!!!
He's arguably the best prof I've ever had but his final exam was horrific! The quiz and midterm were definitely doable if you studied a decent amount but the final was surprisingly specific and tricky. Still, can't be mad at Moses; his passion for Biology is prevalent during lecture and he is incredibly helpful outside of class. Try your best!
Although I didn't really have any interest in the material, I found the lectures really engaging. However, his tests are pretty tough since the wording of his multiple choice and true or false are very specific. Definitely requires a fair bit of studying to get a good mark.
great lecturer, keeps you engaged in the material. very passionate about latest findings. explains material well, helpful after class with questions. class is very detail oriented, need to know classes and derived characteristics very well. lab exams difficult
Amazing lecturer, really a fun guy and makes the material interesting. I honestly was only mildly interested in Behavioral Ecology before, and even though the class was a lot of theory he made it so interesting! Don't passively listen in lecture, take active notes and you'll do well. Exams were not as bad as everyone says, some of my highest marks
Pretty brutal prof. Absolutely awful exams. Studied my life away and barely got an B. I'm a 4.0 student usually but this guys exams are something else. And honestly he's annoying in lecture. Would definitely avoid if you're just looking to take the class for a lab credit.
I was initially intimidated to take Moses class after hearing how hard his classes were supposed to be. If you go to class and take notes of everything he says (not just copy what he puts up on the slides) + give yourself enough time to memorize the material before the test you will be fine.
Probably my favourite prof of all time. He is so enthusiastic in lecture you can't help but be interested. You really need to know details for exams as they are pretty tough, but if you study everything he said in class you're good (don't need textbook). The lab on the other hand was VERY hard, it was ridiculous.
The lectures were very interesting and used humour and interesting side notes to keep the lecture engaging. The tests were hard, but not too bad if you studied well. Questions were encouraged and the professor was available outside class. Great professor. I would change my schedule around just to get him as a professor again.
So far, Moses is a great Biol 108 prof. He keeps class interesting and never boring since he is a great lecturer and keeps everyone engaged. You have to take active notes as well as what's on the slides as he says lots of info that isn't on them but is still important. iClicker questions are a bit hard, but I guess this might help for his tests.
Moses is a great lecturer and keeps class interesting, good notes and examples. That being said, you need to go to class and take active notes in order to do well. Lots of stuff he says that is not on the slides is tested, but he usually adds onto what is there. Quiz was easy, and the labs easy so far. Would definitely recommend for Bio 108!
Bring a voice recorder since the exams are based on "active notes" if you are not an auditory learner, then look elsewhere.
Great professor and lecturer. Yes, his exams are hard. Yes, you have to take active notes. But if you don't want to do this, why are you taking a class with a prof with 3.9 difficulty? Explains concepts very well and has good notes to study from (provided you go to class and take notes). Helpful in office hours and has good knowledge of material.
Dr. Moses was very high spirited and engaging! The exams were difficult questions and based on applying your knowledge, but they were overall fair. His slides covered all the basic info and he explained topics clearly. However, definitely take notes! He goes into more detail than is on the slides. He also provides fill in the blank notes.
DrMoses is really passionate about biology but can get disorganized because of that. Especially towards the end when complicated topics come up, he has to zoom through them as there isn't enough time left to complete the content, and you will be left utterly confused. Exams are challenging, but not impossible. Must write down every detail mentioned
Moses is a great Biology 108 prof and is really passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. Honestly, there hasn't been any boring lectures, since he keeps them interesting with humour. This class requires a fair bit of studying and if you take active notes, you will do well. Don't take this class if you're not willing to put in some work.
He is enthusiastic about biology, I'll give him that. But he rushed through the hardest topics and basically took off a bunch of things last minute. Bad time management skills. He encourages people to participate but is rude when they do. His wording on tests is so specific! Don't recommend at all!
Moses was a passionate and good prof. The wording in his tests are specific, but if you have studied you can reason out wrong answers and figure out the right ones. Quiz was easy, midterm was a bit on the hard side, and final was hard but manageable. You need to put in work to do well in this class. Lab is a grade booster though.
This class got really fast-paced in the last few weeks. Richard is a good prof but I wish he spent more time on the tougher material that was towards the end of the course instead of the easier stuff at the beginning. You definitely have to study hard to get a decent grade. The labs are a god-send, they will salvage your grade. Tricky MCQs.
Richard was a pretty good prof, as others have said, I wish he spent more time on post-midterm material as this was largely tested on the final and had many specific questions. He went through it very fast at the end, but lots of the final tested on this. Quiz, midterm and lab were all easy, but the final was definitely a bit harder.
Dr. Moses is incredibly passionate about what he teaches. His lectures are interesting and makes jokes often. Quiz, and midterm are all MC, but final has MC and short answer. His exams are HARD, you can get fooled even if you know material well because of his wording. Beware of "multiple multiple choice". Do well in lab, its a big help in the end!
If you love biology, I do not suggest him AT ALL. I was a biology major, now im majoring in chemistry because of THIS specific class. He doesn't test concepts, he tests your ability to to psychologically analyze material. Hands down the WORST prof I've had in all my learning years.
Dr. Moses was an amazing lecturer, I found him to be extremely entertaining (this is coming from someone who is not an auditory learner at all!). I felt like I learned a lot in his class. That being said, he tends to word things in a very confusing way, but since most of the marks come from the lab I didn't have a problem with his difficult tests.
Yo, take this class. I loved it. Honestly, it was my favourite first year class. Yeah, you have to give your full attention during the lectures cause he says a lot of testable material that may not be in the notes. A lot of it is big picture based and you have to think hard on the exams. Dude, I hated 107 but 108 was the bomb!
Awesome professor, I am so glad I choose his class for this course!
Richard was a fine prof for this course bet there are definitely better ones you can take the course with when looking a difficulty. His lectures are intriguing most of the time but i still fell asleep in some. His tests are really tough, but the lab portion of the course really helps boost your mark in the end. Definitely a challenging course.
Dr. Moses catches a bad rap from most people. He was a funny and passionate professor who seems to love what he does. He is a quite straightforward with you during office hours, but does help. His tests are not easy, he tests on little details and examples he brings up in class but if you study, they're very doable.
Very hard grader. The volume of material and difficulty of the assignment were overwhelming and really took away from my enjoyment of the course. The scientific essay is pretty challenging and time consuming, then simultaneously having to memorize all that information in just 6 weeks was exhausting. I would NOT suggest taking this in the spring.
You have to be a mind reader to do well on his exams. Thank goodness he scales the letter grades at the end of the course other wise the class average would easily had been a C or C-! Don't get too discouraged if you don't like your %, the grading system in the syllabus is not necessary set in stone. You just need to do better than the average.
Enthusiastic, respectful and approachable. Term Essay is overwhelmingy time consuming and confusing. Exams are 'easy' BUT your grade will be burchered! You need to literally get "into his head" for written response questions. If you are a mind reader then congratulations, this is the class for you! He's also very antagonistic towards technology.
He is a good prof, but be ready to study since majority of his exams are written.
Is highly engaging in lecture. puts a lot of effort into making the material enjoyable and relatable in lecture. His passion for the subject (zoology) shines through his talks and notes. Class is made enjoyable by him.
Honestly one of my favorite profs! He is clearly so passionate about what he teaches and makes the course material interesting. I actually looked forward to going to class because of him. His exams are pretty difficult and you definitely need to study hard and pay attention in class, but his enjoyable lectures make it worth it!
final average was 52% lol... Richard is very passionate and all, a good guy. But the exam was worded confusingly and some diagrams/questions were all weird. I got 90% on quize and 80% on midterm but 55% on final. He rushed the last 2 weeks of class so it wasnt very fun, had to self-teach and it didnt even work out, B- rip
Passionate, however this class is terrible. One of my biggest mistakes was taking this class as a lab credit. Save yourself the time and DO NOT TAKE ZOOL 224. The lectures consist of slides full of lists of traits and diagrams. The lab is trash, there are hundreds of jars of fish that you need memorize by looking at, and frog calls you need to know.
Tests questions are very difficult, require lots of thinking. As well, attending class in mandatory to do well, the examples of certain organisms he uses to explain topics in class show up on the tests, so if you don't go to class you're scrwewed
Going into his class, I thought it was my fault that my grades were not good. But, after looking at others I see that it wasn't just me. His lectures are really boring, and his exam questions are worded weirdly, it almost seems like its testing your reading comprehension and psychological capacity.
This prof has extremely hard tests. You could study so much but still get a really bad mark because of his wording of questions. The only reason I will pass this course is because of the Labs being worth 40%. There was a questions about this video he assigned way back for hw that was on the midterm and final! Of course I didnt study the videos..
Entertaining teacher, who packs tons of stuff into each lecture. Examples in lecture are used in tests, and you get participation grades for iclickers. As much as I loved his lectures, his exams are excruciatingly difficult. Part of me wonders if I would have gotten a better grade from another prof even if their lectures were worse?
Richard has a really engaging/example heavy lecture style that makes attending class fun, and mandatory. His examples are tested, but if you listen to them they will be easy questions for exams. His exams are tricky, due to the way he formats multiple choice questions, but it is not that hard to get used to. I did not find textbook helpful.
His exams are unbelievably difficult. Super tough marker. Super bad at time management as I had to teach myself some of the course material as he didn't get to it in class. There's 1 midterm all MC, and a final with MC, short answers, and true and false. I would never in a million years take his class again.
Great prof! Interesting lectures, and hilarious even with dry learning materials
His lectures are very interesting but jumbled as his slides have a picture with like 2 words on it. So, his lecture notes are really bad so you should go to class and know what the hell he's is talking about. The lab requires memorization of alot of Orders and a few species names so it can be quite tough and feels like another class. Good luck
Dr. Moses is a super engaging lecturer. I rarely zoned out and the 80 min class seemed to go by really fast, since he presented the material in an interesting way. Past reviews don't kid though; tests are brutal. Average for my class on the final was something like 53%. PAY ATTENTION IN LAB!! It will help you on his exams. Overall he's decent!
His exams are REALLY REALLY DIFFICULT. He's passionate and he really knows the material, and he's hilarious, but this course is extremely information dense and he tests on very minute details. Take good notes, study hard and you'll pass.
Richard made bio 108 a nightmare. His tests and quizzes are way to hard to understand. The mc questions are ridiculous, a) an answer, b) a different answer, c) different answer, d) a and b, e) a, b, and c. His class averages are in the low 50s because of how hard his tests are. I wish I never stayed in that class.
A man of many memes. Bio 108 wasn't the most exciting class, but Dr. Moses still made the lectures as enjoyable as possible! His Midterm and final were another story though. The majority of questions were so specific they were easy to trick you if you didn't 110% know the material.
There's hardly anything in his notes so going to class is kinda mandatory and unless you can remember the 2 billion things he says in class, you probably have to audio/video record. His tests are brutal
Every quiz is a trick question. We come to class to lean knowledge, not literature devices. Quizzes are useless. Only one question per quiz, and it always be a tricky question. Ready to 0?
How do I study from this guys notes
His lectures are great, very engaging and interesting. However, if you need a good gpa I dont suggest taking his class. Tests the very tricky. The content itself isnt bad but the way he words answers are very deceiving.
He is a very entertaining prof, and is obviously passionate about the material. However his tests are very difficult, and I would consider the tests way out of the difficulty range for a first-year level course. This class would be great if it wasn't for his tests as they truly try to deceive you which I find immoral.
Very clear tests, without tricky questions. Most of his MC have 1 decent answer, which you'll know if you read the notes. Lectures are fun. If you miss class, the notes are self explanatory. The course is slightly time consuming, but fair. Lab component is harder than lecture. His rating should be much much higher, and he's great in office hours.
He is a good lecturer, and tries to make it fun and interesting for us. As everyone else has said, the quizzes and tests were very difficult (especially the final), and I relied heavily on my lab mark to get me through this course.
Amazing lectures! He is really passionate about what he does and it shows. However, his exams are horrible! They are badly worded and confusing. This is a first year course, however the exams are not first year level by any means.
He's clearly very passionate about what he teaches which is great. Tests are only passable if you read the textbook material and do the assignments. His quiz at the beginning of the year is very easy and not at all a representation of the midterm or final, even though he says it is. Notes are posted online but if you don't go they wont make sense
Professor Moses was very passionate about what he taught. His tests and quizzes were difficult, so make sure you review your lecture notes intensely before doing tests.
So he's pretty dry in class, but for some reason picks the exam room as a place to bring out his sense of humour. This dude straight up looks at me during the exam, says "Wow, looks like you're struggling" then walks away. WHAT A SAVAGE
Dr. Moses clearly loves what he is teaching and is very enthusiastic. Tests and quizzes are hard, make sure you are doing the readings and practice assignments! Overall, Dr. Moses gave good lectures but the tests are challenging.
Dr. Moses is an amazing lecturer that is so, so passionate about biology. You must attend his lectures, however, because his posted notes dont make sense on their own. His tests are difficult, but fair if you attend class, do the assigned homework, and ask for help when needed. The tests ARE DOABLE if you read his questions extremely carefully!
His tests are hard, but if you study hard you'll do well. He's a great teacher and I didn't even read much of the textbook, I still got an A. He's very passionate about teaching. He's accessible outside class and is patient when you have a lot of questions. His notes are good, but I'd advise you attend classes
Very funny and a prof that knows what he's talking about. His exams can be challenging, but the style of questions are thought-provoking and require you to deeply understand the material.
AVOID at all costs / Midterm was manageable but the final was insane. It's basically reading comprehension where one word throws off your entire answer. / Rushed material after midterm so half the final wasn't actually taught to us. / Worst professor I've had for my entire degree.
Really enthusiastic and passionate guy, the exams are worded super tricky and if you don't have as super well rounded understanding of the topics you might get confused. Great sense of humour and definitely would take again.
