Awesome teacher. Extremly smart. Knows what he is talking about. He is very clear on his expectations. I hated history until I took his class.
He tells you everything to be expected on tests/quizes- just read the book and keep up with his lectures. Easy class, and I would take another from him if I could. Hes raaddddddd.
Very knowledgeable and makes class a relaxed, fun atmosphere. Make sure to attend class to take notes and you can't do bad. Tests weigh most of grade, homework is only reading. Highly recommend! I think he's related to Seinfeld!
Good job at making class entertaining. Reading from text is minimum, easy quizzes. Reads notes aloud and students copy it down. Vocab, essay, short response are for all midterms and final has 2 essays inclass. Not super hard if you know how to memorize/write history essays. Gives possible prompts beforehand so know what to expect. Happy with class!
this guy is awesome, one of the best teachers i have ever had. You will love his class.
THE BEST teacher!!!!!!!! You will love his class. HE ROCKS!!!!
He is great teacher. Always on time for lectures. Explains everything clear. You need to learn what is in the lectures to receive good grade. Homeworks were only reading the chapter from the text book and short reading quiz in the begining of each class. THe only negative thing is he doesnt have his lectures on power point so you have to write them
finally a history teacher that makes history interesting! i love history but have always hated taking it as a class until Mr. Mowrer. dont waste your time taking this class with any other teacher, cause he is the best! he made me want to succeed
Richard Mowrer is a fantastic history teacher! He is extremely smart yet does not make you feel inferior by possessing that all-too-common arrogant demeanor. He has a hilarious personality and will have you laughing during lectures. He makes ancient history interesting. I highly recommend this class! Homework is moderate.
A very good instructor. Lots to remember but he makes it interesting. I would love to take another class from him.
mowrer is great! he's down-to-earth and friendly. willing to help and work with you. make sure you read for the quizes each week because the points add up. just wish he would talk a little slower..but awesome teacher otherwise! highly recommended
I love Mowrer! He's hilarious and extremely spazzy but it made my night class with him come and go. His lectures are crystal clear, very formatted, the tests are a breeze. I wish I could take all my history classes with him! Just do the reading/skim the chapters and study for the tests and you'll love it.
He's hilarious, and makes everthing extremely clear. I've always found it hard to focus in history because it's boring, but he makes i so fun that I'm focused the whole time. Amazing teacher.
He is hilarious, helpful and friendly, and very interesting! It's an easy class, with short quizzes on each chapter from the book and simple tests including an easy and short Essay. His classes are great, even if you do not love history. I have taken two different histories from him, and I wish I could take more!
Mowrer is great. He does expect a lot from his students as far as the exams, but overall was an easy class. He also assigns weekly reading quizzes and a couple essays. Funny guy, definitely keeps the subject interesting!
Super great teacher, super easy class. If you you read the material and take notes you'll do fine. WARNING: the note taking is quite heavy in this class. He'll have you scribbling nonstop for an hour straight in an hour and 20 minute class because his lectures are dictation from an outline. But besides that it was like being in high school again.
Awesom teacher! Loved every class, even the boring subject ones. Lots of note taking, but that makes it so easy for the three exams you take during the course. Read the assigned chapter, keep your notes in order, and pre-write the exam essays and you'll get an easy A.
Awesome teacher! he makes history fun! I would highly recommend him! His exams are pretty much given to you. The biggest factor isn't even his exams! it's his weekly quizzes. He just says match two of the given statements with a person or thing. They are easy and, once you get the idea, you can easily predict what's coming!
Awesome teacher. As a history buff I learned A LOT in this class. He has a great personality and wish I could take more of his classes.
You have to read the chapters for the beginning of class quiz but he walks you through notes telling you specifically what to write. 3 Tests getting progressively harder. You choose the prompts for the essay question on the tests. Easy studying. Mandatory attendance in order to take the notes.
Great teacher, loved his teaching style. If you have to take a History class, take Prof Mowrer. Strict on attendance--every teacher always preaches they will drop you if you miss 2-3 sessions, but never does. Mowrer doesn't mess around, he will and did drop students after their 3rd absence
Professor M. makes History fun to learn about. He's hilarious and although the amount of note taking is very high, he makes it bearable with his awesome personality. You will learn a lot in this class, not just in history, but writing and reading skills that will help you in English and other classes. Once you know what he expects, class is easy.
Professor Mowrer is one of the best teachers at Folsom Lake College. He is passionate about History and about his students. His quizzes are fairly difficult if you do not read! I highly recommend to READ! Also it is very helpful for the final. His style of teaching is helpful and keeps class entertaining. Highly recommend to take a class with him!
He is an amazing professor. Hands down my favorite one. He is passionate and very entertaining. He is a tough grader and expects you to know the information for the mid term and final. Expect to read almost every night.
Mowrer was incredible. I don't have anything negative to say about him. His personality and love for the subject make the class amazing and his humor is hilarious. I wish he had knowledge of everything so he could teach every subject. The essays were difficult at times bit he pretty much says how to write it during class. So glad I took him.
Here's some tips to save yo' life: When reading, write down name's, cool stuff, and interesting places. He's a funny guy, so expect the naked Irish dudes to be on the quiz, but don't expect the obvious, like Columbus. Keep the essays simple, he don't need no fluff. If I could do it over, I would have taken the primary sources more seriously.
Amazing teacher! He's hilarious and so passionate about history. He also takes the time to get to know his students. He's very on top of assignments and so helpful! If you ever need help, he's there.
Mowrer is one of my favorite professors. His lectures are extremely clear and for once I feel like I'm finally LEARNING history. He is passionate about what he does and cares about your success. I would HIGHLY recommend Mowrer for some if not all of your history classes in Los Rios district. Reading is lengthy but relevant and helpful!
Richard Mowrer is the best History Professor I have ever had. He's energetic, quick to the point, and makes lectures way more fun than robotic. The class was easy as long as you did the reading and give him what he asks for. If you have to take a history class, take his.
Who would have thought history could be fun and exciting? Mowrer cares so much about his students and plans his lectures so that you stay interested. He tells you what to write in your notes so you don't get behind and test prompts are given ahead of time. He is hilarious and even though I'm not a history major I would take his class again.
Mowrer is definitely a passionate/fun teacher who loves history. He has great slides on the overhead. His grading rubric is a bit hard to understand. Samples of good writing would help. Sharing what he expects an excellently written paper to look like. IE: What does a good argument look like specifically (former A student papers).
Mowrer is such an incredible professor, I enjoyed his class immensely and appreciated the time he took to get to know his students. However this is not an easy class by any stretch, if you have difficulties writing it would be even harder. Study for those quizzes and enjoy his lectures! (even with your hand cramping from note taking)
Best professor ever! His lectures are fabulous and are informative yet fun. Class goes by so quickly because he makes note taking enjoyable. Do the reading and you'll pass the quizzes. Writing assignments are simple and totally doable. The midterm and final are not hard but they're not easy. He challenges you but supports you the whole way.
Mowrer is a great History professor with an excellent sense of humor. His lectures are good. He divides them into social, economic and political factors for the lecture. This makes it so that you that you get more info from his lectures than some professors who focus on just one of the topic. Also his finals require essays but they are easy.
Mowrer is by far the BEST history prof. i have ever had at FLC. Reading is definitely mandatory, but its not difficult. Points are very easy to collect and hes extremely clear with his expectations. Do the reading and study the notes and you are guaranteed to pass.
I found that his teaching methods were not useful and made the class slow. I also found that he has large amount of disorganization. The lectures are supported by very few pictures. Then his unclear instructions on what he wants for our writing assignments, because if you don't give him exactly what he wants you will receive a poor grade.
Disappointed came in loving history, but he found a way to tear that out of me and make it a hated subject to study. his grading is very broad.c
Took him for a history class in summer 2015. Lectures were long and quick but was able to catch up. He is a nice guy and funny at times. He was also willing to help with tests and assignments after class. I would recommend taking him for a history class.
Professor Mower has an intellectual nerdiness that actually makes his lectures pretty interesting. he only needs a bowtie. he probably has one but only wears it on his Tours de France. Hahah too bad Im not a history major, I would definitely take more of his classes
He is an amazing teacher! The lectures are always very interesting, and lively. Weekly quiz which is easy as long as you do the reading. A midterm and a final, in-class essays, but you have time to study for them. One research paper which is very easy, will probably only take a few hours to write. Definitely take his classes.
great teacher hard to find time to read the required amount 1 CH in the one day between classes.
Aweful teacher like others have said I came in loving history and came out of that class hating it, literally had to force myself to go to class to not get dropped... not worth it!
Professor Mowrer was amazing. In high school I hated history and never felt like it made any sense. After taking his class I fell in love with history. I changed my major to history and plan to teach high school history upon graduation. I would recommend him to anyone!!
Professor Mowrer is my favorite professor I've ever had, hands down. I've never really liked history but I can genuinely say that I looked forward to this class everyday. He's awesome at lecturing, and structures the notes as he lectures. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students and what he teaches! You will NOT regret taking his class!
Mowrer does require you to read the textbook, there are quiz's on the chapter, which are totally easy IF YOU READ. His tests require studying but if you've done the reading and do a little prepping for the Midterm and final, you'll do fine.
Richard Mowrer has made history so enjoyable for me, he's a great professor. He very clearly explains what he expects of you and is glad to give feedback on your work before you turn it in. His lectures are really engaging. I highly recommend him!
The class is lecture heavy but they're super interesting. Mowrer is really one of the good ones, he is super caring about his students and really wants you to succeed. He will review your assignments and will tell you exactly what to change in order to get an A. I would highly recommend, just get ready to study. He also has a strict drop policy
I'm honestly sad that I'm not a history major I loved his class so much. Every day is relatively similar in format, but the lectures are really interesting! There was only two assignments outside of class and he was super helpful with them if you went to his office hours.
He grades very tough and on very few assignments, that being said, definitely go to his office hours.
very good
had him for HIST308, just didn't let me choose it. Just be ready to read whatever is assigned. Teacher does a great job covering what he wants, and is pretty clear on how to get a grade in his class. Lectures are a majority of the class, but he does a great job at teaching history in an entertaining way... definitely one of the funniest teachers
I thought this class was super interesting!! Even if youre not into history, hes very ineractive with his lectures and hes super funny. You have to read a chapter before class and quiz on it. Quizes are super easy. PREPARE FOR MIDTERM AND FINAL! Finalfinal grade. If you need help go to his office hours hes always there to help & hes cool
LOVED MOWRER! His lectures were interesting, and he is extremely funny. He was always available outside of class and tells you what you need to fix (e.g. essay) in order to get an A & how to study for the midterm & final. Graded by a few assignments and the final is a big portion of your grade. Midterm & final are both formatted the same.
Professor Mowrer is one of the best professors Ive ever had at FLC. His lectures are full of entertainment and you can tell that he wants everyone to succeed. Make sure to read the chapters and show up to class.
I absolutely love Mowrer. His lectures are so entertaining and he makes sure to learn everyone's names in the beginning of the semester. He is so passionate about history and it makes it so much fun. You do have to read if you want to pass the class and make sure to study a lot for the final and midterm! It's worth it though, he's awesome.
I studied abroad in Paris with him and it was 20/10 experience. He knows his stuff and genuinely cares about his students. The class is exactly the same as the one he does in FLC, just in Paris! Homework, but still had plenty of time to explore. He doesnt hand out grades, so STUDY for the essay midterm and final. Would take it again & again!
I took Mowrers French history class studying abroad with FLC this past summer and all I can say is do it. This is class that has lots of reading but you are able to visit the places that you read/learned about in class. Taking this course was life changing and Im forever grateful to have the chance to live like a local in Paris. Best class yet!
BEST HISTORY PROFESSOR EVER! He is so inspiring about history! Even made me think about my major for a second. Lectures are very interesting and hilarious. Get ready to read a lot but its definitely worth it!
I really liked this class, but the exams can be a bit hard. You have to make sure you write down every single thing that Professor Mowrer says in his lectures. Also, you gotta be good at writing essays. Definitely come to his office hours before the exams if you want to pass, and memorize those "id's".
Favorite history prof at FLC! If you do what you're told and show up to class, you'll do just fine. Always do the readings - there's usually a quiz on it every week - and STUDY for the exams. He's accessible outside of class and truly wants everyone to do their best.
10/10 Would take again.
make sure to read, there are quizzes every week office hours are important for writing your paper, he will tell you the grade you will get if you do not change anything my favorite professor where though! he's so funny and is literally just like Ed Helms from the Office lol take his class!!
Professor Mowrer was one of the best history teachers I've ever had. I absolutely hate history, but because of his enthusiasm and care for his students, I have started to fall in love with history.
What a great prof. Expect a tougher class but very entertaining. No date memorization. The worst thing is the reading. Be very ready for tests and write down notes the way he tells you to. Be prepared to hear about his hot wife.
Pretty awesome man. As someone who does not enjoy history, Mowrer made the lectures pretty enjoyable and his style makes note taking very easy and efficient. All points come from the midterm, final, book report( 1000 page essay), and reading quizzes. As long as you keep up on reading and study the test material, you will be fine.
Prof Mowrer is a fantastic teacher. Be prepared to watch the weekly lectures; theres no avoiding them. Will take about 2 hours a week. Hes a tough grader on the writing assignments but hes also clear on expectations. Accessible in office hours and will look over your work and tell you what to fix. He definitely really cares about his students.
Hes a really nice and understanding guy! The only thing is there is a lot of homework! You have to watch a lot of lecture videos and then answer prompts. He also has an essay on a book you must read, midterm and final. Overall the class wasnt too hard if you just turn everything in.
We stan prof mowrer!! He has amazing lectures and gives lots of helpful feedback. Since I took his class remotely the class consisted of Discussion Boards, Hidden gems (for participation), Reading Quizzes, Midterm, Essay, Final Exam. All were pretty straight forward and he is always there during his office hours to help you out.
Became one of my favorite teachers. Funny & caring, he really does just want to see people put in the time and effort so he can give you that A. It's a bit of a time-consuming class, but you'll be extremely accomplished if you manage it well. Not hard at all tbh. The best online system I've ever seen. Makes history relatable and tells it like a dad
This dude sucks. Hes funny in his lectures, but he gives out too much work and then complains about all of the things he has to grade as if he cant control the assignments he gives. Horrible at constructive criticism and unclear with what he required for the midterm and final. Has grades in last minute. (10 days after the semesters end at night)
I'm a history geek but was really disappointed with this class. If you hate history, he's good because he's entertaining. Barely scratched the surface of each historical period. His mid-term & essay rubric was completely confusing. He'd have a huge line in office hours just to clarify. His advice was "don't worry, you can do better on the final."
Professor Mower is the best, he gives really good feedback and really cares about his students! He is very understanding and helped me so much with every assignment I struggled with.
Professor Mowrer makes his lectures interesting and engaging! The workload can be a bit much, but it's manageable if you plan it out. Otherwise, I think all the work we do is necessary for learning and in preparation for writing exams. I mostly watched the lecture videos, but reading the textbook fills in the gaps that helps me pass the quizzes.
This Professor was so tech savvy and his assignments were easy to follow. There is a lot of note taking, but its to be expected in a history class. I felt like I learned so much, and really enjoyed his online class structure. 100% recommend him!
Professor Mowrer has the clearest, most organized online course I've seen. Each week is the same assignments with no deviation at all with the only exception of the paper (which is a fun paper) at the end of the year. For online course, he's probably the best out there.
I took Mowrer's HIST 308 back in 2019. As someone who now holds a B.A. in History, Mowrer's class still stands out in my mind one of my favorites. He prepares you well for higher-level historical analysis, all while delivering laugh-out-loud hilarious, yet incredibly informative lectures. If you have the opportunity, take his class!
I do not have enough room to write, but he's amazing! Very nice, friendly, funny, great lectures, and interesting topics and information covered in classes. He cares about his students and about the course. He is clear, thorough, and organized; no unclear expectations. I am taking him for a third History class next semester because he is so great!
Although this wasn't an easy A, I really felt like I was learning. We were half online/half in person so all of the lectures were pre-recorded which was nice. Weekly assignments are hidden gems, 3 discussion board posts, and a quiz. midterm and final were short essay and actual essay, but he gives you what you need to study.
A great choice for history! If you're taking an online class, there's recorded lectures with hidden gems you write down as he tells you them. Weekly discussion board posts and short quizzes based on the textbook. Midterm and final are easy if you study! One essay that is pretty straight forward. Absolutely take his in person class.
Great professor minus the testing requirements. Studying several prompts to then simply regurgitate it all back up on a paper that's 30% of your grade is insane. Very tough grader as well. An amazing person does a good job with lectures and offers a lot of help. A test at LEAST once a week and 3+ hours of reading every week.
If you are a history major I really recommend taking him for at least one of your core major classes. His class and exam structure will help you know what to expect in upper division history courses. His exams are challenging but he's pretty lenient on them. There's one paper but he tells you exactly what to do so it's pretty easy.
Great teacher in pretty much all ways. History can be a very boring subject, but luckily he is funny and passionate and therefore the class is enjoyable. I took him for HIST 307 and HIST 308, both were equally as good. They aren't "easy" classes, but if you read what you are assigned and pay attention you'll be fine. Midterms/Finals are well done.
Amazing professor. Prof. Mowrer provides clear instructions and expectations for the course. The course requires actual work, so if you cannot put in the effort, you should not take this class. He structures note-taking and lectures amazingly and clearly. He also has beneficial office hours and encourages his students to talk to him.
love love love
I loved having Professor Mowrer. I took a hybrid class (lecture and online) in the fall of 2022. His online lecture videos were very clear and easy to follow. Weekly assignments do take a lot of time but if you do the work you will do well in this class! He is a really great teacher and wants his students to succeed. 10/10 would take him again!
I am about to take my third class from him. He genuinely cares for students and it shows. Great prof.
Honestly I dislike learning history with a passion, but I took this class as apart of my GE requirements and I almost took another history class from him just because of how great of a profesor he is. The class is fairly tough, he is slightly tough on exam grading but not over petty little things. I 100% recomend him to anyone!
He cares about his students ability to make arguments about history and devises clever ways to get people to do the work. Rather than memorizing dates and names, we focused on collecting evidence for arguments. The amount and type of work seemed strange initially, but it makes sense by the midterm if you stick it out. Come to office hours it helps!
I'll start off by saying he isn't a bad teacher however other reviews do not inform students what his class is like. If you want to be a History major take this guy class and you will thank me. For the other 98% of the people who need this just as a prereq do not take this class. I am in microbiology and A&P 1 and I have less hw in those classes.
AMAZING highly structured lecture formats great for taking notes. Always do your textbook reading, he's not kidding when he says it's important. Big assignments broken down into smaller pieces so they're not overwhelming and he does so much to help people succeed.
Greatest professor I've had by a long shot. His lectures are very informative but also entertaining. He is also a very friendly and approachable professor that treats you like a friend more than just a student. That being said, there can be some heavy reading assignments, especially in short length classes, so don't fall behind and you will be fine
Approachable and great communication, treats you respectfully and friendly. Took the hybrid class and was honestly pretty bored by the lecture, but his assignments were easy. Weekly video lectures and discussion posts. Very strict with what he wants but as long as you do it exactly his way you're good. Helpful with studying for midterm + final
Professor Mowrer was an excellent teacher and person. In person meetings were simple and fun, the online lectures were easy enough, and the work load isn't extremely heavy. I would take him for any history class.
He provided enough context to make the content easier to understand from economic, social and political perspectives, showed a passion for his field, and was understanding and helpful on the occasions I was confused. Homework is not hard, but does require taking plenty of notes from his video lectures. I can't recommend him enough.
Made history interesting, funny, and easier to follow. Also inspiration for my career choice.
Economic, Social and Political. Very personal in all his lectures and breakdown of historical events. Majority of the course is online with weekly check in during class. He only wants to know if you understood the material. So don't sweat the mid term/final. You need to do the work and practice the prompts for the exams to pass the class.
His lectures/videos were slightly long, though fun, informative, and could easily be done with time. Probably don't take him if you are a technical history nerd. However, if you are on that border but still want a fun class then I would definitely recommend him. He's extremely lenient and genuinely wants you to succeed. Easy criteria to follow.
Professor Mowrer is a reliable teacher. I took the hybrid HIST 310 class; it was nice lecture online and in-person for talking about what we learned :) Nice man, funny conversations, clear standards! Gratefule I chose him for this class :) 👍
I took a hybrid class. Super fun professor, he absolutely loves what he's teaching and wants his students to do well. It was a bit hard to keep up with at times as it's super fast-paced with LOTS of info packed into each lecture. But homework is consistent and he's a great teacher. The midterm and final were really tough for me but I survived.
Awesome teacher. He knows his stuff better than any teacher I've had. I took the partial asynchronous class, and he had amazing online lectures and clear instructions on how to take notes and succeed. I had no issues, and I really recommend trying to get into one of his classes if you need to fulfill a history credit.
This was a hybrid class and so there was lots of homework outside of class, in class was just discussions. But if you stay on top of it you'll be fine. He makes dad jokes a lot and they're kinda funny sometimes. He really tries to get you to engage and I really liked that. If you don't take the notes before class you're kinda screwed so do them.
Such a wonderful professor, I am ecstatic to take another one of his classes next semester. This is the class that made me want to raise my hand and participate. It's been a long while since I have been immersed in history and found it an enjoyable class. Give the class your best effort, and you will be rewarded.
He had a temper tantrum in front of the whole class which included cursing at all of us because he thinks us going to the bathroom is disrespect to him personally... Anyways if you miss more than 2 classes or "Hidden Gems" he will drop you from the class and then brag about it to his other students lol. The class is actually fairly easy though!
I really enjoyed this class and the way discussions were set up. Professor Mowrer was great and class was engaging. There were a lot of lectures/note taking and readings, but that is pretty much expected for a college level history course.
Big fan of Mowrer. Took a hybrid class, so video lectures at home and weekly discussions in class. Lectures were easily comprehensible, homework was manageable, classroom was interactive and low-key. Weekly meetings helped prepare for midterms/finals by writing theses for each lecture. Professor himself is a fun and optimistic guy. Would take again
His class was a really fantastic experience all around. Clearly has passion for the subject, and sparks that same passion within students. I would say the amount of homework is average, and has a focus on teaching you, and none of it feels like busy work. I highly recommend every student at FLC to experience one of his classes.
