A funny guy who is just so passionate about teaching science. The title of the course is now officially "Physics for Future Presidents". Highly recommended course!
an awesome professor
Very entertaining, very passionate. Just take his politics with a pinch of salt.
Great and interesting teacher, and the class's suppose to be easier than regular 7 and 8 series. but i still had to study right before the final.
Best class I've taken at Cal...Demonstrations and immenslely interesting readings made this class a joy to attend. Weapons technology, gps devices, avalanches, and black holes...this is intersting physics 'for presidents'
A bit arrogant, but a fantastic professor. You will understand the world around you in a profound way after taking Phys10. He wrote the textbook. Most knowledgeable man I've met. He answers questions about anything before lecture. Prepare to learn a lot.
physics for future presidents, took it during fall of 2001 even though i'm not there at berkeley he still answers questions i have through e-mail; very friendly / the class will make u look at the world differently must take
Great professor! Great class! Great lectures! Very interesting material... explains how things work... applicable to real world. class is called Physics for Future Presidents
Great teacher, very helpful and friendly. He still let me into the class even tho it was already the 8th week and the students already had a midterm. What he teaches is very fun and easy to understand, but that doesn't mean u don't have to work at all.
I wasn't even in the class...but i had an hour break with my next class in the same room....extremely interesting and brilliant professor. Easy class though...physics for future presidents.
one of the best professor i have ever had. i like the demos, the blue shirt, the explaining of how stuff works, the great gsis (im not sure if he chose then tho). he has distinguish teaching award and he totally deserves it. i highly recommend physics10
Muller is everything you could expect or want in a cal professor. He's passionate, brilliant, and makes the subject interesting. I really reccomend this course
Awesome class! I took this as a polisci major with absolutely NO interest in physics, but he really changed that. You get to really REALLY understand what makes stuff work. He calls it "physics for future presidents," and it's totally accurate!
awesome class. awesome teacher.
The best class I've ever taken! Easy but fun, interesting, important stuff that everyone should know! Muller is excellent and so engaging!
Muller is the Grandpa i always wanted...:) The class is so informative and interesting, i promise you wont fall asleep. His demo's are cool, and lectures inspiring. Tests are multiple choice + essay. Weekly article summary due. A decent amount of reading, but so interesting u won't mind!
best class/teacher ever!
A great professor. His lectures are very interesting and you will never have a chance of falling asleep.
The class is awesome, you cannot get lower than a C-. The final is cumulative so be sure not to just blow off studying for the final if you want an A.

awesome class! hurray for muller!
I'm a history major, and this is still the best class, with the best professor, that I have had at Cal. I learned so much useful information about the world. The demos were awesome, he is passionate and extremeley knowledgeable. Every lecture was the kind where, if I was still at home, I'd go home and tell my mom all of the cool stuff that I learned that day. Oh, and it's also super easy. Take Physics 10, it will make you want to change your major.
One of the koolest classes at Cal and attempts to keep the class entertain with interesting experiments.
Nice guy, funny and willing to answer random questions at the beginning of class. Genuinely cares for students and potential knowledge gain. The lectures are interesting, as are the experiments. The reading is engaging once you get into it. For optimal success, read the chapters before you get to class.
One of the better professors on campus. His lectures are interesting, engaging, and (suprisingly) fun! Awesome demos (like the one with the table cloth pulled from underneath the dishes). Very interesting material...take one of his courses; you won't regret it!
Good teacher.
Second best professor I have ever had. He is enthusiastic about teaching. He uses great demos. The lecture is interesting and is hardly boring. He cracks jokes here and there. He is willing to answer questions. Go over the reading!
A very well-designed course. Do the reading in the book (which is online, and thus free!) before the lecture and you'll sail through. You do have to show up to lecture and do the reading, but other than that I don't see how much easier it could get.

This is the best class I have had at Cal.
Lectures sucked (made otherwise interesting material tedious and confusing), tests were tricky. Take it P/NP, unless you really want to make the effort.
Great physics prof. - no mathematics, all interesting ideas and theories. To get the most of it, need to read textbook carefully and listen to lectures carefully too. But, tests reasonably straightforward and simple. Easy A if willing to spend in detail reading book. Dont really need to go to lectures except for quizzes (worth 10%).
this class is a piece of cake - if you go to lecture, skim the text, and turn in the hw on time you are pretty much guaranteed an A - prof gets a bit boring after a while but overall interesting class
Awesome class! Lecture is interesting and presents most of the material. Reading is easy and provides the rest of the information. Best class I've taken at CAL!
excellent professor... he made the class interesting with his lectures... all you really have to do is keep up with the reading and you'll do fine... highly recommended
boring. always fell asleep in lecture. couldn't keep the class engaged.
i seriously dont know what everyone is talking about. This is the worst class ever. It's so boring & would have been better if it was just all math. Take it p/np & dont go ever b/c its frustrating when athletes get better grades for worse work.
Don't think because you're in a class of atheletes that you'll get preference. If anything it makes the class that much more competitive because people feel because it's an easy class they should get an A. It's a good class if your interested in the concepts of physics but unless you really need the hard A, easy B I would take it pass not pass.
muller's lectures are very entertaining, and you only need to attend on quiz days b/c the lectures are webcast. i recommend this class for fulfilling the L&S physical science requirement...relatively easy to get a B or better, no real need to read the chapters.
Great professor and person. Recommend it!
Muller is AMAZING!! I was really sick the day before the final and he was so compassionate and understanding--I didn't have to take the exam, and my grade didn't suffer as a consequence (he just used my grade going in.) The class is unbelievably interesting, and so much fun. You learn really important stuff and Muller is so entertaining!! Take thi
Easy A as long as you don't blow it off. Class is webcasted but there are unnanounced quizes in class that you can't miss. No need to go to section except to get your test back. The tests are all on the book so studying lecture notes won't help you that much. Muller's advice for studying for the final was "re read the text book." I wrote short notes based on what was important in the book to study for the midterms and that made studying for the final easier and I never had to re read all 12 chapters. That's what I recommend to guarantee an A.
Physics for Future Presidents! I definitely recommend this class for ALL students regardless of major. Grade based on a curve, material practical. I thoroughly enjoyed it!!
muller is awesome, i avoided physics intently until i took his class and now i love it, quantum rocks
Muller is an amazing professor. He really loves what he does and it shows in his lectures. He's entertaining and clear. His book is online and is easy to understand. This was my favorite class this semester.
Muller is the best prof I've ever had. I changed my major from polisci to engineering after taking Physics 10. Very passionate and CARES about his students (not just in an academic sense, but also a personal sense). Talk to him, he is one of the most interesting and friendly folks you ever meet. Not to mention that he is extremely knowledgable!
Muller definitely knows what he is talking about, and is very passionate about his field of study, however he tends to be a bit of a blowhard and drops names likes its his job. The class was easy as long as you actually attend the lectures and pay attention and not just say you'll watch the podcast later.
Muller is very passionate about physics and really wants his students to be as well. The material is very interesting, but sometimes it seems as if he randomly picks the topics. My main problem with him is that he's arrogant...makes is sound as if he's going to revolutionize physics....that all your previous physics profs were wrong.
He definitely knows his stuff and is enthusiastic that his students are learning the essentials of physics.
Muller is an AMAZING professor! His lectures are extremely entertaining (especially for the first half of the semester, when he performs experiments in which he shoots bullets through walls and metal rings through the ceiling) and his class discusses numerous relevant and seemingly abstruse topics in a way that makes them understandable.
Really passionate about everything he teaches--great lecturer. All you really need to do is read the book to do good on the tests (2 midterms and final). Pop quizzes in lecture, even though its webcasted when you wanna sleep in.
I learned more in this class than any other class I've taken at Berkeley. A good class for people who hate math and science. His lectures are fun for the first 2/3's of the semester. Easy class if you keep up on the book (about 25-30 pages each week). He is smart as ****.
Took the class pass/fail, but I could easily have gotten an A had I actually put in effort. Professor Muller himself was very interesting and humorous, and was able to connect well with us social science and humanities students. Definitely one of the best professors I've had at Cal.
Overall, Muller's entertaining and enthusiastic about what he's teaching. He occasionally goes off on tangents, but pay attention, as he writes questions based off of lecture.

makes physics understandable = great
Fantastic teacher, entertaining
Awesome professor, best I've had at Cal yet. He makes every topic in class relate to real life, so that your knowledge can be applied in more places than the exams. There are easy pop quizzes in class. The textbook is very helpful - it describes everything that he goes over in class perfectly.
muller is pretty interesting. smart. but this class is concieved as easy though it is. it is curved so a high grade looks better than it is because everyone gets an A. muller is cocky. lol. peaceeee.
Great Professor Watch Him on Real Player
Muller is a demigod. Is more knowledgeable than an expert in almost every subject, from music to poetry to cosmology to of course physics. Anyone who says he is pompous is just jealous. Only weakness is that he cannot fly.
interesting lecturer, but his textbook is written as he speaks. learned a lot of useful information in his class. a bit cocky, but in a funny, not annoying, way.
Muller makes science interesting by focusing on relevant topics such as nuclear weapons, digital cameras, and computers.
Muller is very smart and has a clear devotion to teaching--I'll give him that. His textbook is not good, it's full of spelling and formatting errors and is repetitive. His ego is as big as his classes, he said this: "It's possible that I've analyzed more climate data than anybody else in the world!" He brings up how wealthy he is. ITS MULLER TIME!
Muller is awesome. Physics for future presidents is one of the greatest classes offered here, and Muller is the reason why. His lectures are wonderful, his demos are awesome, and he makes abstract concepts understandable and relevant.
You will learn stuff that you find useful and interesting. However his lectures are a boring rehash of the book. Also getting a straight A is more difficult in this class and requires more work than in most breadth courses. For the book, skim through the boring science and focus on the applications cause that's what he tests you on.
l33t muuuller muller? anyone? muller? muller? boom! higgs boson! percolate your electron through this magnetic field cuz when you take this you got another thing coming
I have two words: he's a narcissist.
Very passionate about his subject. Also very knowledgeable; he always has answers to every student's questions. He did write some anti-religious stuff, but he never brings that sort of attitude into the classroom. One of the most fun professors I had, although he does talk about himself a lot.
Muller is absolutely wonderful. He really knows his stuff, and even if he can't make it to class, he still finds us a very valuable substitute. ;D The tests are multiple choice + one essay question. You should attend class not only because he gives easy pop quizzes [to see who's there and listening] and his lectures are very enjoyable!
fun, interesting class. you actually want to wake up to go to class at 9:30.
Muller's a nice guy & the class is pretty interesting. The lectures are good summaries of the text, but you don't really need to pay attention as long as you read the text closely. The review sessions are helpful. The weekly news article assignments were pains in the butt.
read the book. that's all that matters. Discussions were useless.
This guy is so full of himself it gets in the way of learning the material. He name-drops, he pontificates, and he always mentions how HE knew everything before so-and-so, blah blah. Assumes his students are all freshman, so he has mandatory attendance and "surprise" pop quizzes - that kind of stuff should stay in high school. Ugh.
Richard Muller loves himself. Quote: "I'm going to be on KGO 810 AM radio tonight. Bill Wattenburg and I will be discussing global warming, and then we'll be taking phone calls. No need for you to listen, or to call -- this is broadcast all over the West Coast, and he has over two million listeners. But I thought you might like to know."
He's very arrogant and since he wrote the book, he tests you on minor details to make sure you engulf yourself in his work. The class is easy but a lot is common knowledge. Just read the textbook and you'll get an A.
Like others have said, he's arrogant. But he does seem to care about his students and the lectures and demos can be pretty interesting/amusing. Subject can also be fun to learn about. GSI's are good. Have to have a good memory for details for tests
Muller was super arrogant. Lectures were absolutely pointless because everything is straight from the book, but he still "requires" you to go by having pop quizzes. I don't know who votes for this class as "Best of Berkeley," because most people I talk to do not enjoy it whatsoever.
He is one of the worst professors I have had yet. The only reading is a book that he wrote and he tests you on how well you know the book, not the concepts. Muller thinks his opinion is always the correct one so be sure to write what he wants to hear. Too self- righteous! Don't take the class!
Okay so he?s sort of arrogant and his information isnt always 100% accurate- but he simplifies things for the benefit of the students. Easy class to pass with an A. Get a GSI who isnt a hard grader. Class was entertaining?it woulda been more entertaining if it wasnt so early tho. Quizzes randomly, which makes going to class a necessity. Easy Easy.
Sure, he's got an ego, but he can actually back it up - he's super intelligent and passionate about the class. Plus it made things interesting, so it's too bad this is his last semester teaching. I took the class because I heard the demos were fun, but the material is actually way more fascinating. Read the textbook to do well on the tests.
Kind of thinks he knows everything (although he does know quite a lot). He really enjoys teaching and it makes the lectures more enjoyable. If you read the textbook, you'll probably get an A or A-.
his quizzes were hard
I absolutely loved Muller's class, he is very knowledgeable about everything even remotely related to his class. This class was easy because you genuinely want to study the material, and its all pretty straightforward. No more than an hour or two a week studying. Its a shame he's retiring but Jacobsen's pretty good too!
awesome prof
Arrogant, disorganized, and confusing. His lectures turned into tangents, tests were based on rote memorization (and not actual concepts), and grading was unfair (if you got the entire answer right it's not full credit). Although the demos were somewhat helpful, concepts were still unclear. Not a fan!
The only professor with the same ego level was Mike Meighan. But unlike Meighan, this guy actually knows what's he's doing. It's rare you find a man with this type of arrogance actually be the excellent professor he is.
