He is really entertaining, and really helps you understand the material
Hes AWESOME!
His class was pretty easy for an honors class. He makes chemistry really entertaining (my favorite lecture), but I learned most of the material from the book. He is very helpful in office hours, so take advantage of those. Overall a really entertaining and fun professor... not sure how well he prepared for upper-division chemistry courses though.
Nafshun is awesome!
He's the best professor I've ever had so far in college
he is a good guy if you can take the class do, you will like him alot.
AWESOME!!!
He was so excited about chemistry it made me excited about it!
Nafshun is the best of the best! He has a true interest in his students' learning, and his lectures are awesome! He's always more than happy to answer questions, even if they're irrelevant to the subject at hand, or go beyond what you need to know. If you can, take the chem series from him, you wont regret it!
Nafshun is an enthusiastic teacher, but I didn't learn much from him. His lectures are rather disorganized and you're never really sure what to take notes on. I ended up learning everything from the book. Tests and homework are easy; it's the labs and write-ups that kill. 226H was too easy compared to 225H.
Excellent teacher--actually, the best I have ever had. He is so helpful and makes learning chemistry fun. I wish he wouls teach my other instructors how to teach.
I really enjoyed his class. I was able to understand everything that he covered. He is very organized and the notes were very helpful to me. His excitement for Chemistry made me excited too. Keep up the good work!
AWESOME! He was very interested in our learning and making sure we understood everything he was saying. Lots of review before tests. Tests were very similar to practice tests. He was very willing to help if you didnt understand something. Very nice person!
Nafshun is the best professor by far. He has great jokes and is always excited to teach everyday.
Very clear, makes chemistry easy to learn and more interesting. However, I felt like I understood everything in class, but little details on the tests can be a little tricky, so my test scores weren't what I expected. I still recommend him though, way better than Travers.
Awesome teacher. Makes a difficult subject interesting and relevant. Fosters a general appreciation of chemistry in his students, and has a warm personality.
D in chem in highschool, B in nafshuns class woohoo =]
Awesome teacher! best ever!
He was a great teacher, always very excited to be there and able to explain everything clearly.
I have had many good professor but as good as this guy. This is the most funny class you ever think you will take at OSU. I had him in chem 121 and 122, and he was amazing. Just read the notes and do the practice tests and an A grade is guaranteed. When I took 121 I used to attend the lectures. But, in 122 I have been class 2 times and still got an
Had Nafshun for CH 121-123. He's funny, excited to be there even at 8am, and will do experiments that students request via email. Tests are easy, just make sure you read carefully because it's easy to make stupid mistakes since they're all multiple choice.
Amazing teacher ! I never liked chem until taking his classes. He is extremely enthusiastic and doesn't make you feel bad at all for asking questions if you get confused. He tells funny stories but makes understanding chem so easy. I HIGHLY recommend him!
I thought he was a great teacher, was helpful during office hours and was very clear during lecture. Bottom line: a very good teacher.
Sooo amazing! Very enthusiastic and helpful and will definitely keep you awake in class. GREAT teacher!
Going to class is actually enjoyable when he's teaching.
Great demos, relates to students, and really fun class
Prime example of a professor
Awesome. Never took chemistry, never opened the book, hardly ever studied, got an easy A. He explains everything in class, awesome demos, and enthusiasm.
Oh lord, where do I begin? He teaches and tests on only the basics so it is extremely easy to do well. But if you want to really learn chemistry, dont take him. I think he assumes that because it's a nonmajors course that we don't need to know how to solve problems at a high level. I asked him a couple "hard" questions and he couldn't answer them.
I love this guy! I hated Chemistry before his 3-part basic course, but I actually ended up looking forward to attending his lectures. The material was very basic but straight-forward and he makes the lectures so much fun it's not funny. By far the funnest professor and most enjoyable science class I've taken at OSU.
awesome and fun
I love this guy. Funny, smart, easy going. Everything a prof should be. You are guaranteed to laugh at least once. If you've taken high school chem, this class will be a breeze, but Nafshun makes it worth coming to. Midterms and finals are pretty close to the practice tests and he'll flat out tell you that. Great teacher overall, highly recommend.
He's a good teacher.
He is a pyro and makes things go boom in class. FUN!
by far my favorite class taken at OSU!
very funny!
Definitely teaches the material well. Makes class fun and interesting by always blowing something up at the end. I would say if you had to take a chemistry class, take it from this guy.
fun teacher to have.
I was so scared coming to college last year, but this was my first class and it was awesome! He made it a fun class and always had funny stories or awkward moments that would always make you laugh...good times :) I learned some chemistry too!
amazing!
Nafshun is mellow and easy going. He will tell you exactly what you need to know for the tests, but I didn't feel like I really learned anything. Blowing stuff up on Fridays is cool, but it's hard to stay awake in an early class. Not a great class, but very easy.
He's really funny in an awkward way, he does an experiment/example every day. Really good teacher.
Nafshun is awesome! He makes what should be an boring class pretty interesting. As long as you go to lecture and recitation you should have no problem passing this class. He cuts out all the crap from high school chemsitry as well.
Dr Nafshun was a great teacher. This was my second time through this class and passed with flying colors because he made it so easy to understand. I really enjoyed him as a proff, great demonstrations at the end of classes and he is always perky even at 8 am ;) if you need to take chem take it from Nafshun.
BEST prof I EVER had. Amazing teacher and person. Looked forward to his class every day. Very funny, entertaining, and still got the job done. See him now and then at Knights games. If you take Chemistry, take it from NAFSHUN!
Great teacher
One of my favorite profs, he's hilarious everyday and dorky. I loved that class, despite hating the material. He is understanding and truly cares about his students and you can tell that he has a passion for his job.
He is overrated.
Excellent. Makes the 8:00 a.m. lectures worth going to with his great stories and sense of humor.
I took his online classes (CH121, 122 - starting 123 this coming quarter). Use the resources he makes available (past tests, videos, practice sheets, etc), study, practice and you'll do well. He wants his students to do well. Answers email quickly. Good professor.
Love the lectures. The professor is very helpful in and outside of class. The OWLS program is annoying and tends to glitch a lot, so make sure you don't this homework at the last minute.
Awesome teacher, advise that if you consider taking 100 level chemistry don't take it from any other professor, (also I'm a guy and still gave him a flaming pepper rating) sizzzle
Nafshun is a wonderful teacher! He is always upbeat and just a joy to be around. I wish he could teach every single class I am in; there isn't a better teacher than him.
Awesome professor. Keeps me interested in the course material somehow, even if it's boring stuff.
Nafshun is hands down the best Prof at O State. He keeps his lectures funny and makes me interested in the stuff. Ive have had him all year and will miss not going to his classes anymore.
It's been 10 years since I took Nafshun and I can honestly say, he still is one of the BEST professors I have ever had! I majored in the sciences but then switched to visual arts and since then, I remember taking his classes with very fond memories! Highly recommend him!! Good to know he is still teaching!
BEST professor I have ever had!!! I actually understand chemistry now and love his class. He makes the material easy to understand and the tests are easy to study for with past exams on the internet.
He really takes the time to explain the material, but if you don't understand it he is more than willing to go over it again. He also offers a lot of availability either during his office hours, by appt, or directly after lecture to talk to you about Chemistry. In his lectures he keeps them extremely lively by cracking jokes or showing demos.
This dude is one of my favorite professors at OSU. Chemistry has never been easier to understand after taking his classes.
This guy is so fun to watch teach! He's got good demos and he's always telling random funny stories (mostly about his kids/family) but he stays on track really well. I never read the book and I've gotten As in the whole series. CH123 way easier than CH122... a good term. :D
Best teacher ever! Very fun to listen to and makes learning very easy! Highly recommend him for 121.
Chemistry has never been more of a clear subject to me after taking Mr. Nafshun's 121-122-123 series!
Awesome lecturer, fun class. I even had it at 8am and he always had demos to keep us awake like blowing things up. Great prof to have as a freshman.
He is amazing! He has an explosion after EVERY lecture, is super animated to keep the material interesting, and writes great tests!
He is a grate teacher. I will take all chemistry class with this teacher. The test is easy though need to read text to get concept. His talking is fun to listen. Again,He is a wonderful teacher.
Nafshun made waking up for a nine o'clock class worthwhile! He explains things well, prepares students for the exams, and grades fairly. Can't wait to continue with chem 222 next term.
Great professor! I had him for 10 oclock lecture (after he had already done the 8 and 9 ones) and he was STILL so dang perky! He's very enthusiastic about teaching and although it's a huge lecture and he has an automatic schpiel, he stops and asks for questions frequently. He also prepares you really well for the tests, you don't even need the book
He is very energetic and teaches things well. He does fun demos as well. Stuff on test is what was taught in class. Only complaint was that the labs in addition to the class were not too helpful.
He is easy to listen to and very passionate about teaching.
Nafshun has got to be the best prof I've ever had. His teaching is clear, he answers every question as well as he can, has awesome office hours, and makes a point of doing at least one explosive demo every week! He's awesome, and that's all there is to it!
He is a wonderful Professor. I had him for the 8am class and he was always on his A game. He taught concepts instead of reading off slides which I really appreciated. He is a great professor to have.
Pleasantly surprised by this course. Tests are straight-forward with ample study resources. Lectures are captivating, clear, and entertaining. It is obvious that he enjoys the teaching aspect of his job and wants to encourage students' interest and success in chemistry.
Absolutely the best professor I have had at Oregon State. Even though his 8 and 9am lectures are pretty early he keeps you wide awake with his enthusiasm and demos. If this class was an elective I could take multiple times for credit, I would take it, just for the lectures he teaches. Not a boring professor at all and really knows what he's doing.
I don't get the hype about this guy. He's alright, I guess. From what I've gathered of my classmates, he's teaching to a low common denominator, but his avoidance of/disdain for Physics seems to indicate an underlying lack of knowledge or an unwillingness to think a lot. He's energetic and easy to stay awake for, though. Watson's smarter.
He is horrible professor! Just kidding, he's a nice guy teaching easy classes. So easy that merchanising management & apparrel design students can get A's on his test by studying / familiarizing themseles with / memorizing the questions of the past exams (which he provides). His tests don't change & always includes questions about his experiments.
If I didn't know about the horrors of the Chemistry Department after Richard already... I probably would've switched to this major because of him. The man is awesome and has a great sense of humor and can make his students laugh at will. I'm a firm believer the man could do stand up comedy but chose stand up chemistry instead.
Great teacher who made going to class enjoyable!
He knows how to phrase things so they become common sense. All of his midterms and finals are a cake walk. He makes chemistry a delight with his passion.
BEST TEACHER AT OSU, HANDS DOWN. If only everyone could be so wonderful. An amazing person.
Best chem teacher in the department. Amazing class, amazing lecture style, amazing person. I am sad to leave his class.
I took Nafshun for CH 222 and 223; his class is super fun for a chemistry class bright and early in the morning, but I felt like he didn't go in depth enough with the material for what you were expected to know for the tests. If you want a good grade, you need to read all the textbook chapters and go to lecture simply to solidify the concepts.
Best inorganic chemistry experience - if you do all the assigned problems, complete his worksheets which are awesome and do the posted previous mid terms and finals - it is quite possible to get 5 units of A
Definitely keeps your attention, but i agree that he keeps things simple, and almost too basic at times. He makes sure to get through all the main concepts though, and once you do the online hw and worksheets/practice exams, the course is a breeze
This is the worst online class I have ever taken. He is ZERO HELP and his assignments online do not guide you or help you at all. If you are already good at chem, maybe it will suit you. Don't take him if you need extra help. The tutors online just spit back what is in the text, so you can't even rely on that. Don't take this online course.
Definitely the best chemistry professor I've ever had. I had taken chemistry in high school and hardly understood it, but CH221 was so different. His lectures are sometimes not that helpful, but he does cover the basics and tells you exactly what you need to know for tests. I mean I registered for his only open lecture this term and it's at 8am...
Funny, helpful, and concise in lecture. Very helpful and supportive during office hours, and he's just a pretty cool dude.
Best proffesor I have ever had, interesting! And always kept me awake!
HANDS DOWN BEST PROF AT OSU! Def take him if you can. His lectures are the best, and he is just such a nice person!
Great, guy, really funny and interesting lectures!
My favorite professor, really helpful and available for help. Interactive lecture, interesting guy
Dr. Nafshun is an incredible professor - I don't use the word lightly. His lectures are extremely clear.
Helpful, energetic, and you can tell he actually really enjoys teaching.
Amazing professor that really brought chemistry to life. I can't recommend him highly enough. Great sense of humor - kept the class awake and involved.
I will never understand how he got to such a level of excitement at every single lecture. Great professor nonetheless.
BEST CHEM PROF EVER! At first I hated chemistry but this guy is AWESOME! He is so hilarious and engaging with the students and will honestly answer questions clearly without too much extra fluff. Quizzes are on exactly what you learned in class. Hands down my favorite class of the term, and I always looked forward to going to his lectures!
Best professor! Enthusiastic, clear, knowledgeable, confident. Makes an honest effort to teach a concept in ways students will understand. Writes large for people in the back. Very patient and helpful. Full of lame chemistry jokes!
Dr. Nafshun is a great professor that is very helpful, and keeps you entertained and focused on the material. A++ recommendation.
Nafshun is by far one of the best professors I have ever had. He keeps you really interested and does awesome demonstrations. He makes all the information really easy to understand. I wish I could have him for every Chem class I took.
If you have a choice, ONLY take this professor for chemistry. i have had all the others and the rest don't compare! extremely entertaining. I don't zone out in his class at all. i'm excited to get up in the morning and go. he is always used his blow torch for demonstrations in class its so interesting! all concepts very clear. easy tests. take him!
Nafshun is a very good teacher. He was gone for two weeks so I had every other chemistry teacher teach at least one class, and I can safely say Nafshun is the best. Very nice guy, very knowledgeable. Highly recommend.
I took CH 231 with another teacher and thought the class was fairly easy. I got like B+s on the test but after having Nafshun I have gotten 100% on both midterms so far. He is the head of the classes so he knows exactly what to teach for the tests.
He is such a great teacher!! I really enjoyed him and his goofy humor. He really knows his stuff with Chem. I would recommend him to anyone. Great help!
THE BEST CHEMISTRY INSTRUCTOR EVER! He makes everything so easy to understand, and goes above and beyond to make sure everyone has the help they need.
please do not take this class online if you have not taken Chemistry before because it will be hard to pass.
Please do not take this class online if you have not had intro to Chemistry. Instructor seemed pretty cool but course material got harder as the weeks went by. This online course was just a two month course. It hard to work fulltime and then to come home and try to study for this. You will need at least 5-6 hours to study. Fast Paced Course.
BEST GENERAL CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR EVER!!! Don't have anybody else. He is a great professor and is really clear about what he is teaching. And he has a cheesy sense of humor that keeps the class awake. I really enjoyed him a lot and learned a lot as well.
Good teacher in General, for me I don't like his jokes in class lol. He is just like a high school teacher, his test is easy if you go to lecture and do the past exams.
While chemistry is more difficult than most courses, Nafshun really does make this a fun class. He is very articulate, and passionate about what he does. Go to class and do the homework, and you'll make an A. He really does want you to succeed.
He was great, very enthusiastic for 8 in the morning, maybe a little too much:) I loved the class and his experiments, almost every class he had some demonstration, majority of which involved fire
Hilarious. Great teacher!
Best teacher so far. Can't wait to have him throughout the Chem series.
I don't understand the rave about Nafshun. Yes he may be an enthusiastic teacher, but he assumes that everyone is always on the same page. He talks too much about his personal life and doesn't take enough time explaining material. He is all over the map with his notes as well. Don't take him unless you want to learn everything from your textbook.
Nafshun ran a very organized course. I had fun, it was easy to get up early in the mornings to attend, and I really understand the concepts--unlike last year in high school. Thank you
Dr. Nafshun makes Chemistry so much fun. I have learned so much in 17 weeks. I'm serious, I love chemistry. He makes connections that I need. I have never felt so successful in a class before. Don't skip class.
Professor Nafshun is a wonderful teacher. He is a teacher that makes learning fun. I took another Professor for CH 231 and she was good but Professor Nafshun is way better. I really enjoy chemistry. He is worth getting up early in the morning for.
I should have done this a long time ago. Nafshun is a teaching god. I learned so much in his classes I found that organic chem was easy. I have never had so much fun in a class. He sets u class so you work problems and really learn the chemistry. I took general chem three years ago. I miss him.
YES! Prof. Nafshun is the greatest Prof. I have had at OSU in over two years. I loved going to class. I knew I would learn something every time. Organic chemistry was easy after taking CH 231-2-3. He makes chemistry fun and exciting. He is very nice and helpful.
Awesome Prof! Prof. Nafshun is a great teacher and so much fun in the classroom. Attend office hours for extra help solving problems and looking at chemistry. He is so helpful and great at explaining chemistry. Greatest teacher ever.
Prof. Nafshun is the best teacher I have ever had. He uses the white board so you can keep up with notes and asks questions so you have a chance to learn. He makes chemistry fun. I wish he would teach all my classes.
Dr. Nafshun is the best teacher I have EVER had--even in high school and before. His class is full of fun (blowing stuff up and working on chemistry problems. I didn't have him for 231 and my grade went from a B to an A with him. I have learned so much. Thanx
His classes fill up fast for a reason. He is a great teacher. He makes chemistry fun and motivates me. My sister took him two years ago and said I need to take him if I am going to take o-chem. She got an A in o-chem 'cause she was prepared.
The Best! I understand him better than any of my other Professors.
Best Prof I have ever had. We work through problems in class. Very clear.
Greatest Prof ever! I have had so much fun in this class learning chemistry. I hated chemistry in high school and now love it. And understand it. Highly recommended.
Yes, he is the greatest prof ever! I loved his classes.
Day 1 and Nafshun is awesome! He has us working on problems so the hour went by very fast. He is so lively and makes class fun.
I had Professor Nafshun for 231 and 232. It was a wonderful run. I am kinda sad I do not have to take 233. okay, not really sad. I am going to miss the explosions and fun.
I should have taken him for CH 231 and 2. I now have an appreciation for chem and am understanding acids and bases and titrations. The homework is easy if you go to his class. He is full of energy and gets you to interact at eight in the morning. Don't know how he does it.
I agree with all the positive comments about Dr. Nafshun. He is a GREAT teacher. The best. I enjoyed leaning chemistry and he made certain I learned the material. I wanted to say he is a really nice man. He really cares about students. My advice is to go to class and work on his problems. Go to his office hours.
Dr. Nafshun is a pragmatic professional educator. He is very involved in educating students and utilizing function methods to support the learning process. He is not just a professor that lectures on his topic of interest. I would take any class from him without hesitation. 10/10
Excellent teacher-go to class and the teacher meetings and you'll be set. Labs are tough, but if you pay attention you'll be set:)
Dr. Nafshun's lectures were wonderful. He was really funny, covered the material well, and gave lots of examples of how concepts were actually used in the real world.
Really good professor who is excited about what he's teaching
Excited about what he's teaching
He is a wonderful teacher and is clearly passionate about what he teaches. Also, he does lots of cool demos.
Mr. Nafshun is the best -- although I've taken higher level chemistry before and understand what we're working on already, he still manages to keep me interested. Tells lots of funny jokes and does interesting experiments, but can also teach the subject very well! Highly suggest, no downsides to this prof!
Such an easy course. Get your mastering chem done every week on time and it explains just about everything you need to know. I also loved how there were a few little things that he would subtly say were on the test.
Excellent lecturer, especially good at teaching us what's on the tests. I rarely saw material on the midterms or final that we hadn't gone over at least once in class. He teaches us what we need to know to succeed in the course, rather than just what he likes to teach. His lectures make early alarms so worth it.
He is really engaging and explains the material well. Does great reviews before each test, which is super helpful.
His lectures are really interesting and keep you engaged, unlike a lot of teachers that drag on and on in monotonous voices. He also makes a lot of jokes and gives good analogies to help you understand the material better. Going to class really isn't such a burden because he's fun to listen to! Highly recommend!
Nafshun is a great teacher! One of the best lecturers I've had so far in college. He makes things interesting and keeps you engaged. (Lots of cool chemistry demos during lectures also doesn't hurt!) He is also insistent about approaching him for help if you need it. I would definitely recommend him; I plan on taking the whole chem series with him.
This guy is so full of energy, it'll blow your mind. Lectures are always interesting, and he will have some kind of in class example most days. He is always available during office hours, and makes sure people know times when they can get help if they are stuck. Best chemistry teacher/professor I've every had.
His ST/U Engage course on STEM Outreach is probably one of the best classes you can take during your first year. Provided a budget for each student to create their own outreach event and personally helped everybody. Guarantees an A for anyone who shows that they care about the Outreach event that OSU runs. I've also heard that he's a great 231 prof
Nafshun is so engaging as a teacher. Every class there is chemical demonstrations that are really cool.
I didn't get the impression that he knew chemistry all that well. He was good at the demos and such but as far as high level teaching of the subject, no. Tests were easy. I think he just wants everyone to pass, but doesn't really care if anyone learns anything. There are hundreds of students in each section so no one-on-one time with instructor.
He's a great professor for a subject both he and the students know is tough. If you show interest and go in for help, he wants nothing but for you to succeed and will help you until you get there, but if you do not go to class, do homework, or show any interest, be prepared to suffer through this class.
Believe the hype. He really is that good. The only thing I didn't like about this class was how large it was, but Dr. Nafshun still made time to answer questions. The tests are shared by all sections, so sometimes it seemed like there were questions we didn't address specifically in class but this is college- you're supposed to do the reading.
Nafshun is very energetic in lecture. It would take some effort to doze off in his class. He knows his material well and is more than willing to help you understand it. He is a great option if you are taking Chem 231-233.
In a word, no. Drapela was way better. I felt like Nafshun's class was a repeat of my high school chemistry course. He watered it way, way down. Yeah it's a 100 level course but we're at OSU, a university, not LBCC. He's very enthusiastic and loves teaching, I get it. But it wasn't in depth enough and we didn't learn all we needed to.
The only good thing he does is give you shortcuts that make memorization of difficult concepts easier. He makes it "fun for all", but as far as learning, what you will learn in his courses is at a very basic level. I don't think he knows how to teach chemistry any other way. Easy A, but not a great educational experience.
Takes difficult concepts and makes them simple to understand. Everything on the exams is stuff that he's gone over in lecture--I never even bought the book and have been getting all A's. Lecture is engaging. For those saying he's making it too basic: you do realize it's a gen chem class, right? It's supposed to be more basic than advanced classes.
Professor Nafshun is an amazing professor. The tests and work is the same for all of the professors in the 23X series, but Nafshun prepares you best for them.
Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to have him as my instructor, but I had his videos as aid together with worksheets made in conjunction with Dr. Barth His enthusiasm is contagious & as a visual person I couldn't have asked for anyone better. Engaging lab experiments, seems to be a great lecturer, explains everything in detail Thank you
Dr. Nafshun is one of the best professors I've had at OSU. He cares about his students and wants them to do well. If you don't understand something, you can visit his office hours and he is more than happy to explain things. He is very approachable and doesn't create tests that are impossible. Also, his lectures are interesting and engaging.
Nafshun is a really good choich for any of the 230 general chemistry classes. He is funny, animated, and very lively. He usually teaches in the morning and he always comes into lecture energized and happy. His lectures are informative but on point. He is always available for outside the classroom help.
Cool guy
Rare breed of STEM prof who can deliver a clear presentation and answers questions without getting too off-topic. However, gets off-topic enough to keep you awake. Like I said, rare breed.
Dr. Nafshun is everything you want in a professor. He is passionate about what he does and he shows it in lecture. He cares about all his students and really knows his stuff. I feel bad for anyone who has to take a different professor.
Dr. Nafshun is an excellent instructor. Very passionate about chemistry and teaching it to us. His excitability is really infectious.
Super fun and funny. Very excited to teach chemistry and actually TEACHES rather than just gives you information. All about your success.
Best professor you will ever have!
One of the worst I've ever had! Not much you can learn from him, except why pH paper turns red if you stick it in a glass of lemonade haha. Not a nice person, either. Wayyyyy not nice. AVOID!
No thanks
Easily one of my favorite professors. Makes lecture fun and entertaining, and really seems to care about student success. Extremely entertaining and energetic too, he has funny side stories in every lecture and hes really just a cool dude. Lot's of online homework but its manageable.
NafSHUN? NafSH*T!! He is crazy. Wanna sit thru 3 quarters of freshman chem and not learn anything? Take his class.
Nafshun is honestly my favorite teacher and he really know what he is talking about. He also makes sure that everyone knows the concept by asking if people have questions in each lesson.
Super great professor. Made Chemistry actually fun and interesting. If attend class every time and do the homework, you'll be able to pass easily with at least a B in the class.
super cool dude, makes sure you learn, and is super easy to talk to
Very energetic and engaging, and seems to care a lot about how well you do.
Dr. Nafshun is incredibly passionate about chemistry which intrigues me and wants to make me learn more. The class is very easy and the tests are extremely fair.
I took his U engage and it was a ton of fun! He checked in with students and made sure they were doing ok with their other classes and understood his class was a low priority. Was always positive and cared about his students, he frequently placed input on how to better an experiment and how to make it work in a certain setting. Great guy!
Very good professor, failed the first time I took this class and the 2nd time I took it I was lucky enough to be with him and he explained what I thought I'd never understand very very easily.
Nafashun was my first professor that I have really liked at campus! He's funny and makes chemistry fun! I highly recommend him for a teacher!
Nafshun has a very energetic personality and brings lectures to life. Very accessible, qualified and simplifies complex concepts. Tests follow lectures and very similar to practice exams. Textbooks optional, however I found it to be very useful when preparing for the exams.
Do not take anyone other than Nafshun for Chemistry!! Students know he's the best, and often the kids who have different teachers still go to his class for lecture. He's THAT good. He's also super funny and energetic, the only teacher who's lectures I look forward to. Sign up for Richard if you can!!
Best teacher I've ever had at OSU. Very clear, respectful and understanding.
This guy is the best! I was a decent chem student in high school but was worried about how I would do at a collegiate level. He is is amazing! you get notecards and a ton of info on the tests and the tests are MC. Lectures were great to go to and he is very funny. Cares about his students and understands many people struggle with the subject
Clearly the best. He made chemistry fun. The only things you think about when you take his class are: let me be done with the easy homework, and I want to see his reaction after the Beavs win/loss. If you have a chance to take this class with him, don't hesitate.
I wish he taught every chemistry class at this school.
Honestly, I wish he could teach every class I have for the rest of college, chemistry or not. Great guy, great teacher, super encouraging. Wouldnt take gen chem from anybody else
amazing teacher, hilarious anecdotes, going to office hours is the best thing you can do with him. Wish he taught more chem classes bc I would 100% sign up for them regardless of whether or not I needed to take it. Best teacher for chem, so much so too many kids showed up and they needed a bouncer.
Hands down the best professor I have ever had the pleasure to have. He's incredibly enthusiastic about what he teaches, and I found it very easy to learn the concepts in the CH 23X series from his style of instruction. If you are a committed student, you will have no issues doing well in his class.
Hes really funny and cares about his students
Nafshun is the best chemistry 23X teacher, he's funny and makes the material easy to understand, but the CH 23X series itself is tolerable (at best). There are weeks with a bit too much homework, but it's easy if you attend class and read the textbook (not always needed). Also, the final grade is curved a decent amount. Good luck!
This guy was born to teach chemistry. He has a gift in explaining difficult concepts in really clear and straightforward ways. I also thought he was hilarious, but I noticed some of the class didn't really get his humor (maybe it was too early in the morning for them.) Most of the chem department teachers seem to be great, but he is the best!
Great teacher I failed the class with the only other professors I took it with
Best professor I have had. Made learning chemistry very easy. When I couldn't get his lecture section, I signed up for the 8AM but went to Nafshun's lecture instead since it was much better.
Entertaining lecture style that also encourages the student to engage. You can tell he is very intelligent. A great teaching style that also helps students learn. Always understanding and supportive outside of class as well.
Very solid professor. Explains stuff clearly and answers all questions. Treats students with respect and was probably one of the best professors I've had in college.
This class was pretty useless. It was on the complete other side of campus, and usually we were dismissed early; which was frustrating walking that far for nothing. He always just seemed really unusually happy. He would say like one more answer but then wouldn't stop saying that until he got 4 more answers. I didn't enjoy him very much at all.
Professor Nafshun is absolutely amazing. I actually looked forward to going to his lectures; his lectures are informative and engaging, and he makes them entertaining as well. He's a very funny guy with a passion for chemistry. His tests are very fair, and he always curved the class at the end. Definitely the best professor for gen chem.
Dr. Nafshun is a great professor that makes lectures super fun! I found that he didn't always cover the concepts in lecture that were on the homework assignments, but overall the tests were representative of the material. He's also very good at making study guides for the test and is a genuinely nice dude.
This teacher understands his topic thoroughly. He does cool experiments in class and is very funny. He will answer any questions you have. We tried tripping him up with space travel, plasma, and ice tsunamis and he either answered or googled. Get to know him as a person, he's very nice.
He respectfully answers any and all questions. The tests are a reflection of the practice problems he gives in class. His lectures are engaging. If you show up for lectures and do the practice problems, you should have no issue with his exams.
One of the only chemistry professors that seemed to care about their students.
Nafshun's enthusiasm makes class fun, and I like his teaching style that we work on example problems and he goes over them. I don't know how he has so much energy, but his passion and jokes keep me captivated during lecture. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students. Study well, and it'll pay off.
I never took chemistry before college and I ended up with an A in this class. Nafshun's lectures have a lot of information on only a few topics. I felt as though I had a great understanding of some chapters, and had to learn some of them almost completely on my own. If you put in the work, an A is possible in this class. Must like math!
Nafshun is the best professor at OSU. He's also the first chemistry teacher I've had that can teach the material in a way people can understand, be engaging, and helpful/down-to-earth. If you need help he is happy to explain, but I rarely needed help because his lectures were so good. 11/10.
You know one of those people you only meet once in a life time? This IS that professor. He is an AMAZINGLY caring and heart full of gold. I am applying to medical school so I haven taken many science courses and I would have to say Dr. Nafshun is truly one of THE best professors I have encountered. I would 100% recommend him, take his class!!!
An amazing professor who really cares about his students. Take Nafshun and you will be well prepared for the exams!
He genuinely and deeply cares about his students. Makes the class fun and tries to wake everyone up with his energy (since the class is early in the morning at 8am). Exams are exactly like the past exams provided. He makes topics easy to follow and works through a lot of practice problems with the class in order to ensure that students understand.
The teacher that made me switch my major from MechE to BioE in order to take more chemistry classes. Having never taken much Chem before coming to OSU, Dr. Nafshun made it incredibly easy to understand.
The best chem teacher I have had, period. Really focuses on how chem applies to engineering. Very flexible, and always willing to answer questions. No midterm or final for the class (at least when I took it). Weekly graded assignments, but with unlimited attempts. Easy A, but you would be missing out if you skipped. His lectures are awesome!!
I hated chem before this, always interesting lectures and is a great professor
Love his class. He's a very engaging speaker, reminds me of a very nice Dr. Cox in the way he talks. He does demonstrations and the homework is really really easy. I was in an easy class but all we had to do was a little quiz (unlimited attempts) and the online hw system every week. I'm going to be taking his 202 class
Oh hi.
An amazing and hilarious professor. You only have 1 assignment and 1 quiz due each week for this class, and the grading is flexible. Quizzes have unlimited retakes, and the learning module he uses for the assignments can help you make sure you don't fail the assignment (unless you don't turn it in on time). Dr. Nafshun is super accessible, too.
It's simple: attend classes (or not it's up to how confident you are on the subject), do homework (quizzes with infinite retakes and a learning module that TEACHES you and gives a perfect score just for completing), no exams, put them together and you have a free 100%.
Super passionate, very entertaining. This guy has been at OSU forever and knows his stuff. For a lower level class, he definitely can "dumb it down" for us but will give little nuggets for those asking more advanced questions. 201/202 structure was changed recently and makes it much easier. Put in effort and you'll get a good grade.
Great guy. Great professor. Take him, you won't be disappointed.
My favorite teacher when it comes to engaging lectures, and strait forward grading criteria. He is an OSU vet and truly cares about his students.
Really fun teacher. you can tell hes super excited about what he teacher
I LOVED this class! I actually don't really like chemistry but he was always so energetic and excited to teach. He was always very helpful and determined to help us understand. He did a demo in class EVERY DAY which was really interesting and entertaining. Course work was VERY LIGHT! Very satisfied with this class.
Dr. Nafshun is an amazing human. He puts his students first before the class. He puts a lot of time into helping the students understand the lectures and material. He responds to emails fast and is very flexible. He creates a very structured class and is extremely organized. I recommend taking this professor.
I would recommend taking him. Chemistry is my least favorite subject I normally fall asleep during chem class but he made it really fun. He shows you lots of cool chemistry experiments and projects. He is pretty funny too I wouldn't have done as well with a different professor he makes chem accessible.
Super easy, don't need to go to class. There's only ALEKS and Canvas Quizzes. unlimited tries on quizzes until it's due. for the aleks, just click explain and it'll tell you how to do it. he often does cool experiments in class if you want to go. helpful if you need help on quizzes or homework
Awesome guy, funny and caring, easy to talk to and ask questions. Great at explaining things. Theres 2 assignments each week, one is a quiz with unlimited attempts and the other is a little harder but going to the lectures will make sure you can do it easily. He does experiments in class and really knows how to get students involved.
Very easy course. Lectures are not mandatory. Easy A if just do the homework (I didn't do all the homework).
Dr. Nafshun was a solid choice for CH 202. The structure of the class made it very low stress. I didn't have to sweat to get an A. Lectures were not mandatory by any stretch of the imagination, but he always performed cool chemistry experiments during every class. He was more than happy to help students with homework and quiz questions.
Richard's class was very easy. It was 2 assignments per week with no midterm or final. The canvas assignments were simple, however the ALEKS could get difficult at times. The lowest canvas quiz and ALEKS assignment get dropped. Richard is very funny and knowledgeable with fun demonstrations in lecture.
This class was easy and I really enjoyed it. There is only two things to do every week, a canvas quiz and a ALEKS (homework /assignment). Lectures were also very enjoyable due to the experiments he does and they also help explain the assignment. Just do the two things and you will get an A. Also, a fantastic teacher; Easy to talk to and he cares.
Awesome Chem Proff! While I didn't get a great grade, that was not his fault in the slightest. If anything, the reason I got the high-ish grade I got was because of his great teaching.
Obviously very passionate about his subject. Clearly cares about his students success, and gives extremely entertaining and informative lexctures
Great Class!
Although lectures are long, Prof Nafshun keeps them interesting with funny stories and jokes. Usually performed 1-2 experiments during lectures. The workload was easy. 1 weekly quiz(unlimited attempts) and Aleks which can be time-consuming. Loved this guy!
Great teacher overall with a very forgiving homework model with one weekly online assignment and a quiz, both with unlimited retries. He makes every lecture enjoyable either with humor or live demonstrations. Very accessible inside and outside of class.
Nafshun is nice guy and is passionate about not only chemistry but teaching chemistry. I won't lie, I focused the first two weeks of this class then after that I just did the online homework in class. I passed with 100%, there's no final. Quizes and HW for this class you can take as many times as you want. Good grading and good professor.
Nafshun is extremely clear about the grading criteria. All you need to do is the weekly multiple choice canvas quizzes (unlimited attempts before the deadline) and the weekly ALEKS (which can be harder, but the platform teaches how to do it). Attendance is optional, but his lectures are fun and he does cool demonstrations.
Amazing guy, always had fun lectures and the work in the class was extremely easy to do, you had to try to even get a B or lower because the quizzes and ALEKS homework were so forgiving.
Amazing teacher. Very interesting, easy, simple to learn class. I would recommend to anyone. I was highly stressed about chemistry before this course and he made learning it very easy.
He's pretty alright. There were only 2 assignments per week with no midterm or final, and the homework was completely online with unlimited attempts. His lectures were kind of boring, but not that bad to sit through. He does hand out a lot of papers tho, that are just like notes and ungraded worksheets
2 Assignments due every Thursday and lectures were optional, just working on the problems you would see on the two assignments and some demos.
Super easy class, two assignments a week with unlimited attempts. Just do the work and you'll get an A. The lectures are not mandatory, but you can tell he really cares about you and your learning.
Professor Nafshun is a great professor. His classes consist of two assignments per week, but you get unlimited attempts. It takes a decent amount of time so just start earlier than the due date. He is very interested in Chemistry, and you can see how excited he gets when teaching. I really enjoyed his class and the energy he has during class.
This is a great professor. He cares about his students and is really interesting to learn from. The class is super easy to pass as long as you do the work. Overall I really suggest this class and this professor.
Nafshun is a great teacher and I would love to take another one of his classes.
He's awesome
He was super nice and understanding. We only had two things to do each week and one of the "quizzes" was unlimited attempts. This was definitely one of the easiest classes I've taken so far. 10/10 would recommend him.
Nafshun is definitely one of the best professors at OSU. He is the GOAT
Awesome teacher. He always brings 110% energy to his lectures and has a passion to teach his subject. For CH 201 there are no finals, no midterms, only multiple choice quizzes on Canvas and a weekly ALEKS assignment.
Very engaging and fun lectures, you can tell he's passionate about chemistry and likes to teach. Grading is also very easy, you can pass with a B or higher if you just do all the assignments and try your best. Great guy, 10/10 would recommend.
Amazing guy. Lectures are not required, but you will regret not going! Every lecture is fun and full of chemistry demonstrations. I would highly recommend taking his engineering Chem class.
He is a nice guy, but he doesnt really teach, most classes he is yapping the whole class, the whole class is dependent on aleks which is the worse website to ever exist. His office hourse dont really help tbh and yeah thats it, but hes nice tho
He is an incredibly entertaining teacher and loves to have fun in the lectures. The high difficulty rating is simply because the material is hard, has nothing to do with him.
Very recently, the CH201 curriculum was changed to include exams, making this class a little harder than before they were required. However, these exams are quite lenient, and you'll be alright if you study a bit. Nafshun himself is a wonderful lecturer and he even makes his 8:30AM lectures extremely entertaining.
This class is literally one of the easiest classes you'll take at OSU. Recently it's gotten a bit more difficult but it's still way easier than the CH 23x series so I really do not understand the complaints since they haven't taken the real Gen Chem series here. Then they'll know what "difficult" really is. Nafshun is really fun and energetic!
The lecturers are always engaging, and as of fall term 2023 the class uses ALEKS for the homework which is much much much much much friendlier than any other "education" tool I have ever seen. The instructor is available by email and loves to help students with any problems. And they are just nice too.
Super fun guy, easy class, might be literally the ideal teacher.
Dr. Nafshun's lectures are always engaging and he explains course material through multiple perspectives to ensure that students can find a way to understand. Answers every question in depth and creates a fun learning environment.
Class has a lot of content and it can be difficult but Nafshun makes the class so easy. Literally show up to class and you'll not only have a blast, but ace the class. Don't be lazy and skip lecture.
Great professor! He explains topics really clearly and the demonstrations always make class interesting. Is a really funny professor and knows how to keep even mundane topics interesting. Would 100% recommend!
Much of the course could be completed online, with the tests being structured exactly like the online homework. Attendance is mandatory with two absences allowed per term (before 10 pt grade deductions), but the lectures are worth it with how involved Nafshun is in his teaching and demonstrations. Easy to get an A if you put in the effort
He is an amazing professor. Very entertaining teaching style that makes you feel time fly during the class. He also provides positive feedback when you ask him questions during the class or after the class. The only homework that we have to do is Alerk and weekly quiz which only takes one to two hours to do, ezpz.
I appreciated his energy as a lecturer, but I never felt like he taught the course material all that well. If he spent more time on topics and slowed down his pace a bit, I think it would've been a bit easier to understand, especially with the difficulty of the concepts in 202. Otherwise, he was alright and usually well-liked by students.
As long as you are not horribly lazy and actually attend class, it's super easy. Way, way, way easier than the other Chemistry classes at the university. Nafshun's lectures are amazing and you'll do great if you show up. Midterm and final are not difficult at all if you do your work and pay attention but since people don't show up, they do awful.
I personally really enjoyed his lectures, he is very high energy and clearly excited about the topic. my only issue is that sometimes he gets a bit ahead of himself and moves on a bit too quickly without time for questions but there's plenty of resources online to more deeply understand the topics.
This class is actually super easy. If you don't show up to class and make excuses, you'll do poorly. Nafshun's lectures are informative, engaging, energetic, and content-dense. If you are lazy and don't show up, don't complain about the difficulty of class. I switched my major to Chem because of him and saw what hard Chem classes are actually like.
Honestly a great guy and really knows his chemistry. His course is set up so you can pass, the last exam is on canvas and not proctored. I didn't like using ALEKS, but after taking CH231 i'd much rather use ALEKS than MyLab&mastering. Overall Great guy and really wants his students to learn.
I took CH 201, in Fall 2023, my first term at OSU. I originally thought it would be one of my most challenging classes because I found chemistry difficult in high school. I was pleasantly surprised when this wasn't the case. The class material is very straight forward, and the lectures are made even better by Dr. Nafshun's sense of humor.
Nafshun makes this intro chem course super engaging. The lectures are fun and he explains concepts clearly. Attendance is a must, but with some effort, you'll ace this class. unstuckstudy ai also helped with study prep.
This guy's class requires you to basically just do the problems with him but he is very engaging to listen to and the tests are light. He covers the exact content that the tests cover and he is very entertaining to listen to.
So awesome so funny makes everything interesting and relevant
Choose him! Great lectures... sometimes he's so enthusiastic that it's hard to differentiate between what stuff he wants you to retain and what is just fun side info. You will spend a solid amount of time self-learning the niche rules and outliers of each chapter on ALEKS, but that's because of the very limited 2 lectures a week that the course.
Nafshun is a great professor that will explain any questions you may have both in person and via email. His lectures are engaging and the passion really shines through when he does his demonstrations. He prepares you well for the exams through lectures alone.
Great guy and he was the only reason I showed up for class. The tests are relatively light even if you know nothing about Chem like me. If you study the material a bit and get generally what happens in class you will probably be fine. You get one notecard per test and if you put the equations you want, you will pass.
You will not get any grade less than an A- if you attend the lectures, pay attention, and do your homework. Homework is try until you get it right, so you are always able to get 100% on homework. Richard is a fun, caring guy who very obviously cares about the material he teaches and his students. 10/10 would recommend taking this class.
Super funny guy, loves to do demos and blows something up almost every class. Class is super easy, even for someone like me who is bad at chem! Just attend lectures and do the homework and you'll be set!
Nafshun is the superior chem-gineers professor. His lectures are clear and entertaining. He makes a lot of jokes that can be distracting, but does his best to answer questions clearly and quickly. Overall supportive of people learning at different levels.
NGL lectures can be boring but hes always blowing stuff up so its not too bad. Goated teacher, always cracking jokes. BUT BEWARE he makes things look a lot harder than they really are, so dont get to stressed during lectures.
I'm using my current grade in place of my final grade because I'm only halfway through the course, but if I don't write this now, I'm gonna forget. Not only is his class enjoyable, entertaining, and engaging, but it's actually effective at getting the points across. You can tell he's passionate about what he does, and I appreciate it.
This guy is a very good professor, and the class is structured very well however I found his lectures very boring and confusing. As long as you show up to all the lectures and do all the homework it should be an easy A but the homework can sometimes take a while.
Hilarious guy. He's very passionate about what he teaches and will blow something up every class. Some of the stuff can be confusing and boring but if you show up to every class and do the homework you can get an A pretty easy.
The class is designed to be easy and Nafshun is entertaining and enthusiastic. He's a little disorganized in lecture, but it's not too big of a deal. Most of your grade is homework, which you can easily score full points on, it just takes a while. There are 3 tests (15q multiple choice), the last one is online, and the lowest score is dropped.
Very funny and goofy guy. Explains topics very well and in an engaging manner. Easy grader too.
The class is a pretty rough and lots of homework due to the ALEKS but that's not within his control. He makes the best out of a decently hard class and overall makes it easier. While its not stated that attendance is mandatory, there's daily in class assignments acting as attendance.
Lots of ALEKS homework, stay on top of it and go to class to secure an easy A. Quizzes and tests are easy. Nafshun is awesome. He's so good, he'll make you briefly consider switching to a Chemistry major. Take him, you won't regret it.
Every lecture is engaging and explained very well. In class activities and lots of practical examples/experiments happen nearly every class and make every lecture well worth going to. Always willing to help students and answer any questions. Simply put, one of OSU's best professors.
Made me feel like I was in the correct major.
Had a lot of difficulty in this class because I suck at chemistry and lectures are hard to follow but if you are more interested in chemistry this professor is the guy for you. very caring, extremely energetic, and just an all around pleasant dude.
Amazing and energetic person. Great teacher.
Took this class online and didn't learn anything. The professor was largely absent—no discussion board, no lectures, and no regular deadlines. You had to email with any questions. The entire grade was based on textbook readings, homework, a few labs, and tests. Everything came due at the end of the term. Disappointing.
Pretty much coasted by through just attending class.
Best professor iv ever had at OSU. The class is designed for you to get lots of practice for the tests but isn't too overwhelming. He genuinely wants to help you succeed, is easy to reach outside of class and is always ready to answer questions.
Nafshun's lectures are a treat to anyone lucky enough to attend them, as concepts are explained very clearly, and he goes through a lot of examples, leaving you with a bunch more optional practice every class if you need it. There was a take-home exam, and no final during finals week. Even for an early class, his energy is unmatched!
He's hilarious and will do cool experiments on a semi-regular basis. This class could be an easy A. It's not really that hard, but it's time consuming. Uses ALEKS. Wouldn't recommend pairing with a bunch of hard courses, only easy ones.
I fw the guy heavy, but the lectures really aren't that necessary and the content can easily be learned outside of class.
Best chemistry teacher out there, rivals Bill Nye, and very passionate about this subject. This vastly improves the class as well as what you take away. Get used to an online term, ALEKS as that is where all of the time consuming content comes from. But that has nothing to do with him. The lectures themselves are worth the hefty tuition price lol.
Easily my favorite professor at OSU so far. His lectures are highly informative and always entertaining as he does little demonstrations in class. He's obviously very interested in what he teaches and will always help you when needed.
Richard is a dawg, best professor I have had so far, really fun person and gives entertaining lectures. I loved his class, recommend taking chemistry with him, he's also super helpful during office hours.
I really want to give this professor a better rating. He's a fun guy and I really enjoyed his lectures, but based on our conversation, he seems to have little understanding of how his own class functions, both through grading scale and testing requirements. Even other staff from his department I've spoken to find his class structure confusing.
Amazing professor, take 201 & 202 with him- you wont regret it.
Extremely funny professor that knows a lot about what he is teaching. I would say the only bad part about his teaching style is accidently skipping ahead every once in a while during lecture because he knows so much. I personally have never been good at chemistry and was able to keep up with the class and felt very prepared with his study guides.
Nafshun would be an excellent teacher in High School. His lectures are engaging but all over the place and hard to follow. You're better off learning from the online textbook or getting a vague understanding of the subjects for the test. The tests are easy. ALEKS is the worst part of this entire course. You can skip lecture and be fine.
Nice and passionate about what he does, and you will get to experience him happily blowing stuff up, so that's fun. Took 201+202 in person. Attendance was req but class content was on homework due that Fri (@5pm btw), so unless you already knew it or worked ahead, they weren't useful. Mostly learned the content w/ ALEKS, so req class was annoying.
He is a charismatic professor who manages to get through a lot of content in each lecture, while not overwhelming you with information. He has an eccentric rhythm of personal unrelated stories and necessary and helpful content. He also had online videos explaining and demonstrating all the homework. When a sub was there, it was a sad difficult day.
Attendance isn't required, but Poll Everywhere gives easy points that add up fast. Prof has nonstop energy, lectures are fun but quick; you end up teaching yourself lotta material. ALEKS homework is annoying but manageable, usually 3 hours a week outside class. Overall lively, engaging, and not overwhelming, with clear grading and a fair workload.
Dr. Nafshun is a character. His lectures, although often long and tedious in the course I took, he made entertaining. I'm sure everyone else agrees, he's just super funny. However, this comes from him being a little scatter-brained, which made it a bit difficult for me to learn the material.
This class is easy but you'll barely anything learn anything from him. Instead, it'll be from the ALEKS homework since Nafshun doesn't explain things well. The tests are very easy, though, because the review in Canvas is literally the test with different numbers. However, his lectures are super fun, interesting, and he has nonstop positive energy.
