He isn't just the best prof at TSU -- he's the best prof that ever lived! We worship Prof. Nokes as unto a god! Legend has it that touching a paper he has graded instantly raises your IQ 10 points! If you touch his bald head, you'll make the Dean's List!

Great teacher!
Very helpful. Knows his stuff. Good teacher
Papers were hard to write, he was rude and very unhelpful. plus, he was a yankee!!!
BAD TEACHER!!! DON'T TAKE!!!
I had Dr. Nokes for his first class here at TSU -- I swear, the average IQ of the professors at TSU must've went up about 50 pts the day he stepped on campus. Very intelligent, and his interactive teaching method helped me get over my stage fright! Plus, he's from Detroit! Woot woot!!
Smart men, easy in Composition classes; however, in Literature I needed a little bit more time for better understanding of the material and writing good protocols for it. He is looking for a strong arguement in the thesis of the protocols. I end up with B.
The best english prof at Troy!!!! I learned nore from him than I had ever before!!!
really helpful guy, my computer crashed and i turned in 2 assignments late b/c of it and he understood and i still got an A
He was awesome for comp. in the fall, so I'm taking World Lit. I with Dr. Nokes now. It's okay if you don't understand: He explains everything! Great classes, great teacher! I hope to take him for Lit. II in the fall...
Very clear, very funny, kinda bizarre: overall a very cool professor.
Outstanding!
Really great professor, not boring like ALL the rest. Teaches a very intersting class and makes you want to listen even if you're sleepy.

Love ya Doc!!!
I used to think he was a bowtie-wearing superweenie, then I enrolled in his class. It's too bad RMP doesn't have a choice labeled "Wicked Effing Hot," because that's what Nokes deserves. Verily, he is the pinnacle, and what every university faculty member should strive to be.

He's real smart, but grades kinda hard. His theories about electricity, though, are kinda hard to understand in today's modern american society. He talks about Druids alot. Overall a real good professor.
I liked his English ackcent.
I was nervous about taking his class, you know, with the bowtie and all. But once I was in it, I really enjoyed it. He has that Samwise Gamgee/hobbit look about him that I find so appealling! I can't wait to take his class next semester.
Taking his class is kind of like the movie "A Beautiful Mind", without either.
He is a total ****bag. I don't like the way he talks. I LOVE THE GUY! He's SO CHILIPEPPER! WTF. I think I turned gay in the class. Maybe that's cause I didn't take it! He's cool for writing a blog about himself! You're ROCK DUDE!
most interesting person to listen to EVER
He once slapped a turkey during class, just to show that he could. Gives great lectures and is down to earth.
I love Dr.Nokes!!! He is awesome, the best professor in Troy!!!
loved his class &his way of teaching. he's an amazing teacher &i look forward to having him in years to come.
This guy is great! It's amazing that the rest of the world can come up with this stuff. Plus, it doesn't hurt that he looks like a vaudevillian puppetmaster.
TAKE NOKES! THIS MAN IS SO FUNNY AND GREAT, I'M TAKING HIM AGAIN FOR WORLD LIT. AND I WISH I HAD HIM FOR COMP I.
Dr. Nokes is the greatest comp 2 teacher on the planet. don't take him if you can't handle getting picked on.
Awesome class....he was a little intimidating at first but eventually wore off and loved the class!! would recommend Dr. Nokes to anyone...he is by far one of the smartest teachers in Troy...
Unlike everyone else, I dont like him. I didn't see eye to eye with his views. He would give history "lessons"...aka...ask us the questions and get mad when we didn't know what happened in the 1300s! His class was a waste of time to me and I dreaded going.
Loved Dr. Nokes! If you are way too serious or think everyone must be politically correct he is not the prof for you. He doesn't expect you to know everything but he also doesn't expect you to think this is still middle school where he has to spoon feed you either.
Dr. Nokes was a great teacher! He is a smart man. The course however, is boring to me. He knows the material, but sometimes went a bit off course and asked us about history more than literature. At first, I was uneasy about this class but after a while, I started to understand what he was saying.
Although strict at times, Dr. Nokes is a very good professor for those who really want to learn. Anyone trying to coast through any of his classes are sure to fail.
Dr. Nokes can make anyone at least a little bit more interested in medievalism. The man knows his field as well as about a billion other things that are useful to students. He's strict on attendance but that ends up helping students excel.
Dr.Nokes it a pretty cool Teacher. He come strong at first but that's just his way to keep you on track. It's no way you can fail his class, unless you just don't come. They key to pass is to ask question & come to class. Btw he's a funny guy! He kept me laughing the whole time. Trust me! lol
He is hilarious and a great teacher!
Took his World Lit class through Ecampus. Would not take him again. His grading system makes no sense and the goal of the midterm and the final is to "impress" him. This class was a waste of time.
May seem strict and mean at first, but that's just his sarcasm. (:
I took his class online. He puts to much weight in discussion board posts. He expects you to post by the second day of the week and reply EVERYDAY to someone else's. If you don't have time to attend his class everyday this is not the class for you.
He offers a great class, I took the Eng-2205 through an online course. He is one of very few professors I have seen actually get involved and take the time to do mini-lectures for online students, its usually just read this and test, but not him. You will have to learn his nickname "Dr. Awesome", and just participate in the class.
He is scary at first, but an awesome teacher! You can revise your Comp 2 papers over and over until you get an A!
He is easily the best professor at Troy!
Comes on strong at first. A likable guy though. Only allowed to miss 3 days. Write 4 papers all semester and you can revise 3 of them as many times as you want. (The 4th is your final paper) If you're really sensitive, he may not be the professor for you.
I had Nokes for Brit Lit 1. It was miserable. His "tests" are papers that cover EVERYTHING you've read. Tying 8+ things together that don't really relate at all=Difficult. I was SO excited for the semester to end. DO NO TAKE HIS CLASS!!
I had him for comp 2 and liked him so much I took him for world lit. I made a's in both. If you need help, go to his office. You have to read but the only way to fail is to not try. He comes off strong at first but don't drop...or text in class! Definitely recommend.
Discussion Boards. DO THEM. Check it every day. It's obnoxious and it isn't fair, but that's how he plays. He failed 27 of 33 students in my class because of this. He isn't messing around with it, it's not even in the syllabus. MAKE SURE you do the discussion boards. Otherwise, he's hilarious, and fun to listen to. Just not a fan of how he grades.
He is kinda strict at first but he's really funny. Whatever grade you want in the class, you are perfectly capable of getting. You get to revise all of your papers as many times as you want besides the final paper. Make sure you don't skip class or come late.
I think he is strict, and he is very helpful and smart. I like to attend his class and I think I can learn a lot.
He comes off as strict at first, but his class in general is very easy. You get to re-write three out of your five essays as many times in a general time frame. If you want an A, you can make an A. If you do not care, neither does he, and he will fail you. His papers take intellectual thinking and a lot of research, but it is very easy class!
Dr. Nokes is really knowledgeable and professional. If you want to learn something for real, choose him
He basically just lectures, but it doesn't help at all. If you use what you learn in class, you are accused of "regurgitating" his words. Avoid at all cost. He is not very friendly and does not mind marking you absent for being a few minutes late for a legitimate reason then doesn't credit you when he is late.
You will learn in this class.
Look up "Professor Awesome" on youtube or Twitter. He is very funny. I loved his youtube lectures. You will have to read the book, but the weekly quizzes were easy if you did. Rule of thumb with the discussion board is do the topic and reply to a few others discussions and it will be an easy 100 points every week.
You only get 3 absences excused or not, so try not to miss class! He is professor with a real personality that I really appreciated, but when it comes to grading, he is pretty strict! Make sure to pay attention in class cause he'll be sure to explain exactly what needs to be done.
Only four tests at 25% each, but the study guides tell you EXACTLY what to expect on the tests. I made As on all of them. As long as you do the workbook assignments and understand what you are doing, you will do fine. He seems nice and personable and willing to help. I would definitely take him again.
I love this professor. He is very wonderful and clear. He tells you how it is and is very blunt. He is funny and there if you need him. Make sure you do the discussion board EVERY week!! They count toward your grade!
This class was definitely one of my hardest this semester. You have to get on discussion boards at least once a day. The texts are long and hard to understand but he goes over them in class thoroughly. If this is a subject you are interested in, I would definitely suggest taking him. He cares about his students and recognizes hard work.
Absolutely adored him. Definitely expects you to put his class as a priority. If I'm being honest I barely read any of the stories and only did minimum when it came to the discussion board. If I would have been just a little more proactive, I would have had an A. He is very personal with his students and cares that they do well. 10/10 would rec.
If you enjoy reading, this class is for you. The only negative thing I have to say is that he doesn't answer or grade your discussion posts in a timely manner so you don't know how you're doing until it's essentially too late. He made me even more interested in the material than I was to begin with.
By far my favorite teacher in Troy. In fact, Nokes might be partially responsible (along with the rest of our quaint English faculty) for my choice of English as major. I took both Brit Lit and HEL with him. Knows what he teaches, relates to students and makes you learn. Also, has great stories about his past epic pranks.
Nokes is hilarious but he really keeps his students on their toes. He's pushed me to become a better writer this semester.
Dr. Nokes is a great professor! He is very experienced in his field of expertise and his lectures are really interesting. However, he really presses participation from the student, so if you're too lazy to partake in weekly discussion boards or you're looking for an easy A, don't take him. I left the class with a deeper appreciation for literature.
Dr. Nokes is quirky and passionate professor who keps his classes straightforward and fairly simple. If you do the reading, respond to the discussion boards, and take the quizzes on tie, it's an easy course. Unless you really struggle with more difficult texts (Canterbury Tales, King Lear), it's a piece of cake.
Dr. Nokes has been my favorite professor at Troy. Yes, you have to read. Yes, you have discussion boards. Yes, you must participate in class! However, if you pay attention in class and read the assignments, YOU WILL DO FINE! I absolutely loved the spring semester because of him. Take him. It will be worth it.
You step into his class and, if you've read the material (RECOMMENDED), you enjoy every second of his lecture. He goes over all the history of the text in a really interesting way, and he has very good office hours if you get lost in the text. Nice guy, sarcastically funny, but do your reading. Only 2 papers, be prepared to read!!
Constantly has you write on a discussion board. You have to write at least a paragraph on the discussion board every night. Does not give feed back so you do not know how you are doing. Most of the kids in my class dropped the class the first day. I wish I had dropped earlier than what I did. He is a jerk and is not willing to work with anyone.
Nokes is easily my favorite professor here at Troy. He is going to make you work for you grade - Discussion Boards, midterm, and final are definitely intense. However, his lectures are consistently interesting and he is absolutely hilarious. If you're not passionate about English, don't take him. I really loved his course; you should take it!
You work for your grade in this class. Do the discussion boards and the readings, and go see him in his office. If he knows you are putting effort into the class, you will pass it.
Awesome teacher. Taught me how to right a dang good paper.
He's a very great teacher and he will be tough on you only to make you a better writer.
"Professor Awesome" was a great teacher! His lectures are interesting and not boring. The readings were many & fun. You don't need the book, you can get the info online. Nice guy, great teacher, fun class, typically good discussion questions. Watch the videos, take the quizzes, participate in the discussion boards! And you'll do just fine.
His lectures are interesting, but he requires daily discussion board participation. He is sarcastic and a bit condescending. He doesn't give exams or quizzes throughout the semester, so you have to do well on the midterm essay and discussion boards.
Great class. He made even the most boring literary works interesting.
Dr. Nokes is a wonderful professor with a passion for his subject. He makes lectures interesting and pushes you to respond and discuss the topics. He will personally respond to your assignments and help you where you need improvement. Thoroughly enjoyed his classes. Will take again.
Professor Nokes was HILARIOUS. Very fun and very knowledgeable about the content. He made videos that made you think, and it was clear that he not only enjoyed the material, he took the time to write his own assignments and tests. We need more teachers like this!
Funny, informative, and challenges your world view.
There is a large amount of reading, and DAILY discussion boards. Class attendance counts and there are only a midterm and final for test grades. His lectures are interesting, but you must be prepared to work for this class.
Professor Nokes is a great professor. He knows the material he teaches really well. You will have to be ready to work or you will not pass. There are daily discussions every week and two papers that count as your midterm and final. He is a hilarious professor and makes the class worth going to.
Amazing professor. He's compassionate, he makes the class interesting, and he doesn't want to see you fail. He has empathy as well so if something happens in your personal life making you behind, he's willing to let you make it up.
Professor Nokes is by far one of the best, if not THE BEST, English professors at Troy. He goes outside the box in teaching the material, and though the DAILY PARTICIPATION on discussion boards can feel overwhelming at times, as long as you complete all the requirements, you will do well! He truly cares for students and desires their success!
Visit Professor Nokes in his office! He is willing to sit down and discuss any concerns you may have, and if he sees you are truly putting forth your best effort, he will meet you half way and do his absolute best to help you and give you any recommendations to better your performance in the class. Office meetings will be worth your while!
You MUST attend class!!! You MUST participate DAILY on discussion boards!!! Participation is weighed heavily in ALL AREAS, and if you are not as comfortable speaking in front of people in class during discussions, he expects for you to make up for it in posting to the discussion boards on Canvas. Put forth your best effort and you will do well!
Highly recommended. Have weekly reading that corresponds with the discussion board on canvas. Be active on canvas daily and you will pass. Only two essays, the midterm and the final. He takes attendance every day but gives you a number of days you can miss that are excused.
Dr. Nokes really cares about his class. READING AND DISCUSSION BOARDS ARE A MUST!!!! You have to participate DAILY in the posts. It can get to be a lot of homework but Dr. Nokes does recognized effort. This was one of the hardest classes I have taken. If you are not a homework type of person, do not take Nokes. He does try to help you along.
Dr. Nokes class is very work based. He makes you earn your grade rather than showing up to class and taking exams. You have readings and two discussion boards due every week. They are not that hard but very time consuming. Dr. Nokes does not expect you to be perfect, so he grades a lot of things based on effort. Show effort and you will do good.
I was in Dr. Nokes Bristish Lit After 1785 course. You do have to participate in the weekly discussions. Be sure to respond to someone else and others who respond to your post. I did, and I made a 100 on the discussion boards. His youtube videos are insightful, and his quizzes are easy if you know the plot of each story. Good luck!
Dr. Nokes is an amazing professor. Do not confuse this trait as an easy class because none of his classes are easy. In this class he has unlimited revisions and will tell you exactly what you need to fix to get a better grade. I love the structure of his class and he explains everything thoroughly and makes it fun. He is there to help. 10/10.
Not my fav professor, but not the worst. Attendance is mandatory & graded. Have homework every day of the week. He made most of the class uncomfortable in almost all his lectures because every single thing we read pointed back to sex, and we had to discuss that. He said "we're all adults" which is true, but was weird to talk about every day
Yes, you must read in an English Class, weird I know. However, his is a great prof. Yes, his methods are a little different, but you do learn and have the freedom of an online class. Bad thing is assignments are due throughout the week, and when you have papers due, you only get a few days. DO NOT THIS SCARE YOU! Still got a A!
Nokes is an awesome professor. You write 4 essays in his class, and it is clear what is expected of you. He gives you unlimited revisions so it's pretty easy to make a good grade, you just have to care. Class is incredibly helpful on learning how to write good essays.
Nokes was one of the better professors I've had. He genuinely wants you to learn, but if you're not going to put the effort in don't bother wasting time taking him. Only 4 grades, all are 4-5 page essays based off assigned readings, I made a zero on the first one but he allows you to rewrite them. He will be there for you if you try.
Dr. Nokes was a solid teacher who provided tons of useful information about AI and how to use it effectively. He expects a lot from your essays, but his feedback is detailed and genuinely helpful. My only issue was that he often talked about his accomplishments, which sometimes came across as a bit ego-driven.
This Professor is a very tough grader and has no sympathy towards students. He feels like he is the only person educated enough to teach an English class. If you show up 1 minute late or a couple of seconds late, you are considered absent. The rules of the English department don't matter because he creates his own rules, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!
I did poorly in his class because I severely underestimated its difficulty. Nokes is an amazing professor, though. He truly cared and put a lot of effort into helping me. Your work doesn't have to be perfect as long as its clear you tried.
